Bredagh 2-4 Portaferry 3-5
Bredagh 14 hurlers were 40 agonising seconds away from completing a remarkable Feile / League / Championship treble.
Going into the last minute of this tight game, Bredagh led by a single point. In a ding dong battle which ebbed and flowed - where each team had purple patches it seemed like Bredagh had done just enough the achieve the remarkable.
However a last minute goal from Portaferry captain, Eoin Magee was enough to push Ards men in front and allowed them to finish out the game with 2 further points from frees.
The game was played in blustery conditions and Bredagh opted to play against the breeze and started well. Following a few early wides, Liam Rogers scored the first from a free. But then Portaferry hit their purple patch, and dominated possession for a period. Stout defending from Peter McAreavey, Peter OHagan and Eoghan Smyth meant though their return was minimised. They did manage a goal to put them ahead after 28 minutes. However 2 goals and a point in the final 2 minutes put Bredagh in a commanding position at half time.
The goals coming from a long range effort from Peter McAreavey and a clinker from Enda Gargan. Gargan grabbing the point from a free also.
HT Score - Bredagh 2-2 Portaferry 1-1
The second half was evenly balanced with both teams trading points - Bredagh's from another Gargan free. However a goal and point from Portaferry had the teams all square going into the final 10 minutes. Valiant work from Bredagh half backs JJ Gracey and Jarlath mcCollum kept Portaferry's dangerous wing forwards at bay and Patrick Donaldson and Mel Lavery were getting through a mountain of work at centre field.
A free from the excellent Gargan then had Bredagh going into the final 5 minutes one ahead. And this seemed to be enough until the 30th minute - with the game on the blow - Magee struck. 2 further frees put some daylight between the teams.
Half forwards Ciaran McMullan , Timmy Cunnane and Liam Rogers were all excellent along with full forwards Finn Hackett, Ultan Curran, Emmet Rogers and Ben Smyth.
However this loss - only the 2nd all season in Down out of 18 games - should not take away from a fantastic season. This squad finished the season as Feile Champions and League winners (all division 1) and championship runners up in what were very competitive competitions with no easy games. The management team are very proud of all of the squad and the players themselves should be proud of this year's achievements.
