Bredagh U10 at Blitz in Kilclief
Bredagh U10 camogs travelled to a County Down Blitz at the Ben Dearg club in Kilclief on Saturday 10 May.
Bredagh played 3 matches against Bryansford, Clonduff and Portaferry. All of the games were very competitive and the Bredagh camogs battled hard against tough opposition. Bredagh beat Bryansford and despite some heroic defending Bredagh were unable to outdo Clonduff and Portaferry.
The scores came from Ciara Blaney, Rebekah McKegney and Andrea McKillop with great support play from Aine Wills, Cliodhna Regan, Medb Wills and Maeve Deery. Bredagh defended well with Lucy Jennings and Rionach Kelly clearing their lines superbly. Meabh Devlin’s puck outs drew applause from the opposition mentors and kept the pressure off the Bredagh goal.
A big thank you to the parents who helped out with lifts and support on the day.

U12 CAMOGIE 5.4.08 Portaferry v Bredagh
Portaferry 0.0 v Bredagh 2.2
The first league match of the season saw the U12’s away to Portaferry, on a sunny, cold and windy day.
It took a while for the girls to settle into their positions, but with lots of encouragement from the mentors on the side lines, they steadily got into the game. There were missed opportunities for scoring in the first half with Portaferry defending well, and the first half ended with no score.
After a half time talk the team pulled together and really got into the game. Bredagh dominated and managed to secure two goals and two points to ensure a win. The coaches were delighted with the team performance and it was great for all the girls to get share of the play.
Well done everyone, what a great start.

This game was played as a friendly with Bredagh taking the points allowing Darragh Cross to play first team players. It was a tough game and required a huge work rate from the mid-fielders Roisin McAlister, Peita McAlister and Rosie Watson who did not disappoint. Although a few scoring opportunities were passed up in the first half Bredagh went into the half-time break ahead with a top class ground strike by Louise Friel who buried the ball in the top corner of the net and 2 points by Rosie Watson to Darragh Cross'3 points from play.
Half time Bredagh 1-02 Darragh Cross 0-03
The back line were solid throughout and fine work from Diane Murphy, Eithne McIlroy,Christina Brennan and Elaine Blaney nipped any goal scoring opportunities for Darragh Cross in the bud. In the second half Bernie Deighan added the second goal from an excellent cross from Kate Diamond and Rosie Watson took another two points from play.
Final score Bredagh 2-04 Darragh Cross 0-05

Bredagh Runners-up in Boston
Bredagh Camogie went 'international' last week with their participation in a competition organised by Éire Óg in Boston to celebrate their 30th anniversary. As Bredagh Senior team are in their first year of existence, they were grouped in the Junior section along with Ardoyne, Kilcoo, Chicago and Milwaukee. Éire Óg competed in the senior section with Castelgar, Mullagh and Davitts from Galway and Ferns and Bunclody from Wexford.
Friday 20th July
Bredagh 8-5 v Ardoyne 0-0
In their first match a focussed Bredagh team fought for every ball from the whistle and continued to close down the opposition throughout the game denying Ardoyne any opportunities to get into the game. Ciarna McGarry battled hard winning possession and helped set up an early goal for Bernie Deighan giving an indication of what was to follow. The back line were solid immediately shutting down any Ardoyne attempts to progress towards goal and outstanding leadership from Rosie Watson at centre half forward inspired the younger players around the middle of the field and ensured a constant supply of ball to an experienced forward line. Rosie got on to the score sheet taking 3 points from play and later rounded several Ardoyne players to hit an unstoppable shot to the back of the net. Bernie Deighan displayed a 'Midas Touch' notching up a total of 6 goals and 1 point. Katherine Devlin took her first score in a Bredagh shirt by adding another goal and then a long-range point from Róisín McAlister was the icing on the cake in this high quality Bredagh display. Deirdre Canavan performed well when she was introduced as a substitute in the second half.
Scorers: B.Deighan(6.1) Rosie Watson (1.3) Katherine Devlin (1.0) Róisín McAlister (0.1)

Bredagh 6-7 v Milwaukee 0-0
In their second game Bredagh played an all-American born Milwaukee team who played with tremendous skill, spirit and sportsmanship. Bredagh were still on a high from the previous day's victory over Ardoyne and were slow to settle. However, after an unsteady first quarter, the team found their rhythm and came out clear winners in a hard fought contest. A highlight of the Bredagh display was a hat trick of goals from Katherine Devlin. Deirdre Canavan, who fielded from the start in this game, and Tara Bergin, who came on as a substitute, played well in the forward line.
Scorers: Katherine Devlin (3-0) Bernie Deighan (2-2) Rosie Watson (1-2) Karen Riordan (0-2) Shauna Shannon (0-1)
Anne Costello attempts a long range point.

Rosie Watson goes airborne
The result of the second match left Bredagh joint top of the group with Chicago. However, Chicago got straight through to the final on the number of points scored, leaving Bredagh with the daunting task of playing another 20 minutes each way against Kilcoo in the intense Boston heat a few hours later.
Semi-final: Bredagh 8-8 v Kilcoo 0-0
Bredagh were expecting a close, tight game given their experience of previous encounters with Kilcoo. Kilcoo were very competitive but showed signs of tiredness from their tough game against Chicago earlier in the day. Bredagh reproduced their concentrated display of their first match with very strong teamwork. Peita McAlister. Paula Callaghan (Junior Player of the Tournament) and Róisín McAlister controlled the midfield and provided a good supply to the Bredagh forwards, which kept Kilcoo under constant pressure. Karen Riordan gave an excellent exhibition on how to take scores and young Clora O'Connor found the back of the net with a long-range shot. Shauna Shannon linked up with a speculative cross-field pass from Rosie Watson and buried the sliotar in the back of the Kilcoo net. Again the young Bredagh back line of Diane Murphy, Meabh Hollywood, Raisa Deighan and Bríd Mullan kept tight control, ably dealing with anything that crossed the halfway line and denying Kilcoo any scoring opportunities.
Scorers: Karen Riordan (2-4) Rosie Watson (1-3) Bernie Deighan (2-0) Clora O'Connor (1-0) Katherine Devlin (1-0) Shauna Shannon (1-0) Paula Callaghan(0-1)
Managers Paul McAlister and Anne Costello work out the game plan for the next match - assisted by Michael Hollywood on the left.
Sunday 22nd July
The day started with Ardoyne and Milwaukee playing off for the Junior Shield. Ardoyne had an impressive victory over the American team to ensure that the Junior shield was on its way to Belfast.
Final: Bredagh 2-3 v Chicago 6-7
The final of the Junior Cup was a hard fought contest between Bredagh and Chicago. Bredagh found themselves immediately under pressure very early in the game against a Chicago team of considerable talent and strength, enjoying the assistance of several highly skilled players who had come to America from various parts of Ireland to play for the summer. Rosie Watson again showed tremendous skill and determination, catching high balls with ease. Bredagh fought hard against this very strong team but were under constant pressure. Despite a very creditable performance from Carol McAlister in goals, and great effort in the backs and midfield area, Chicago edged into a comfortable lead, which they maintained right to the end.
Scorers: Rosie Watson (1-2) Bernie Deighan (1-0) Karen Riordan (0-1)
The real winner of the weekend's activities was the game of camogie. All of the games were played in a spirit of sportsmanship and often the final score did not reflect just how competitive each game had been. The quality of organisation was excellent, for example, a referee was flown out from Ireland especially for the competition, and the organisers had ensured that there was chilled water available at the sideline for every game to help the players cope with the intense heat. The venue was the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton, just outside Boston, which is hugely impressive with forty-three acres laid out in pitches, pavilions and stands. At the presentation ceremony, special mention was made by the organisers, of how Bredagh had approached the competition - they had published a special brochure for their Boston visit - and their players and managers were praised highly for their contributions on and off the field. Visiting Camogie officials from Ulster Council and Croke Park made similar comments.
The Bredagh team are very grateful to the following:
Ita Kelly, Niamh Daly, Fiona Gohery and all at Éire Óg for organising this wonderful event.
Anne Costello and Paul McAlister who gave much of their time planning for matches, bringing a sense of cohesion to the team and for motivating the team by creating a great sense of occasion around the games.
Nancy McGarry for her hard work acquiring the kits, production of the booklets, organising meals etc. and endless journeys to ice the water bottles as well as distributing them on the field.
Pat Hollywood and Michael Hollywood for their caring attitude and efforts to ensure the safety and well being of all players and for their help in many different ways.
The musically talented Carol McAlister and Conor Blaney - voices of angels - beautifully supported by the Mullagh girls, for our off-field entertainment.
Frank Costello for the no-fee guided tours of Boston.
Our loyal supporters Barry, Owen, Matthew, Patrick, Pauline, Anna, who carried equipment, distributed water on the sidelines and were always willing to help out when called upon. Also to the Bergin family for their support. And to Seamus and Christina Blaney, and Barbara Young, (Christina's mother) who travelled from Portland, Oregon to cheer us on!
To our Yogic master who taught us the benefits of 'the warrior' before each game.
And finally to our Sponsors Graham and Heslip and The Morning Star for helping to make this truly memorable event happen for us.
