U14 Camogie League (Tue 18th Aug)

Bredagh 1.2 v Portaferry 0.1

Bredagh U14s found it difficult to recapture last weeks excellent form as they struggled to take control of the game this evening away to Portaferry.
However they grafted hard in the second half and did enough to take a few scores and the all-important points of the game.
Molly McMullan on the run.

Bredagh forwards ready to pounce as Megan Hughes takes a free in.

The girls will now face Ballygalget at Cherryvale next Tuesday evening and a win will secure a joint top place and possible play-off with Ballygalget to top their section of league. All support will be welcome!

Senior Camogie

Training with U16s at Cherryvale Thur 20th - 6.30pm

U8s & U10s Enjoy a great day at Casement

The U10 panel played games against Ballycastle, Gort na Mona, Cushendun and Loughgiel.
The Bredagh girls were slow off the blocks and suffered a defeat against a classy Ballycastle outfit. They conceded 2 early goals. Final Score 2-1 to No Score.

The next game against Gort na Mona was a different matter though with girls competing for every ball right from the off. They won the game 3-0 to 1-0. Eimear Rodgers scored the first goal with an excellent strike after a hardworking Ciara Blaney won possession in midfield and provided a great through pass. Gort na Mona fought back though however the Bredagh back line of Meabh and Etaoin Devlin consistently made great blocks. Bredagh’s second goal was a real beauty. Maeve Deery spotted the Gort na Mona keeper off her line and lashed the sliothar the full length of the pitch and into the corner of the goal directly from a free-out. Gort na Mona then scored a goal leaving the game on a knife edge. Bredagh midfielders, Emma Jennings and Zoe Waterfield were winning the battle though and eventually the sloithar broke to Meabh McElroy who beat her marker and with the keeper approaching played a nice inside pass to Eimear Rodgers to finish a great passage of play with an easy goal.

The next game was against Cushendun who were unbeaten. This was a tough encounter with few scoring opportunities. As it happened Anna Doyle, (playing in midfield), picked up the sloithar, rounded her marker and scored with a beautiful 20 metre strike into the corner of the goal. Cushendun had the Bredagh defence under constant pressure but Annie Hackett, playing out of position in goals saved two great goal bound efforts before finally getting beaten. The Bredagh girls also had their own chances to win the game but a draw was a fair result.

The final game was against Loughgiel and was a game too many for the Bredagh girls who were exhausted after the Cushendun match.
The coaches, (Bernie & John), were delighted with the overall performance as it was the first competitive match after the summer break.

One Bredagh U8 found the effort just tooo much and required a strong motivational talk from her team mate to help get her back on her feet again.

U14s to make history at Feile in Laois

After only 4 years in existence, the growth of Bredagh Camogie has exceeded all expectations, with approximately 150 players competing from U8 to senior level.

The club owes much of it’s success to a dynamic committee who have worked tirelessly to nurture and promote the game in the local schools and community.

All the hard work is beginning to pay off as the U14 camogs will make history by representing Down for the first time at the All Ireland Feile in Laois from Friday 19 – 21 June 2009.

Bredagh qualified for the All Ireland Feile by winning the Co. Down Feile in April where the team progressed to the final without conceding a point and won a fiercely contested final against Ballygalget in front of a large partisan crowd in Portaferry.

Bredagh will compete in Division 2 of the Feile with O’Moore’s (Laois), Camross (Offaly) and Lismore (Waterford) all in the same section.

The team will play host club O’Moore’s on the Friday afternoon and the further two round robin matches on Saturday morning. The semi-finals are held on the Saturday evening with the final at midday on the Sunday.

The host club, O’Moore’s, is based in Ballyfin, Co. Laois and was set up in 2004 as a result of the amalgamation of two existing clubs, Mountmellick and Slieve Bloom. In 2007, O’Moore’s won the U12 County final and the U14 Shield final. Their U14 team went one better in 2008 by winning the County final.

Paul Blaney Chair of Bredagh GAC states that he is delighted with the success of the camogs and on behalf of the whole club wishes the players the very best for the Feile.

Portaferry Win Ita O'Connor Cup

Ronan Costello presents Portaferry's Captain with the Ita O'Connor Cup.
Anne Costello donated the cup for the annual Down U10 tournament in memory of her mother Ita from County Clare.

Bredagh GAC organised this year’s Ita O’Connor U10 Camogie tournament which took place in Cherryvale on Sunday. Eight clubs from all over County Down competed in a very exciting event. Bredagh were placed in a group with Ballygalget, An Riocht and Clonduff. The other group included Attical, Ballycran, Portaferry and Warrenpoint.

Bredagh’s first match was against Ballygalget and despite going a goal down, the Bredagh girls fought back to equalise. Great defensive play by Eimear Rogers, Ciara Blaney and Rebekah McKegney meant that Bredagh held on for a draw (1-0 : 1-0).

The next opponents were Clonduff and Bredagh quickly took control of the game. Meabh Devlin and Maeve Deery ran things in the middle of the pitch while, up front, Andrea McKillop, Ciara Swail and Zoe Waterfield could not be stopped. Bredagh emerged clear winners (3-0 : 0-0).

In the final group match, Bredagh and An Riocht could not be separated. Bria O’Gorman, Olivia French, Bria Deighan and Emma Jennings worked very hard but points were hard to come by and the game finished in a draw (0-0 : 0-0).

Bredagh were unbeaten in their group (one win and two draws) and ended the day in joint first place. However, because they had scored more goals in their games, Ballygalget went through to the final against Portaferry.

The final had to go to extra time, and Portaferry eventually emerged winners (2-0 : 0-0). It was a very deserving victory for Portaferry as they had won all 4 of their matches without conceding a single point.

The Ita O’Connor cup was presented to the Portaferry captain by Ronan Costello, son of Anne and Frank and grandson of Ita O’Connor herself who was Anne’s late mother. In a short speech, Anne thanked all the clubs who took part and praised all the players for the fine displays of camogie which were enjoyed by a large and noisy crowd.

Special thanks are due to all the parents who helped make sandwiches for the visiting teams. The coaches brought the leftover food to Stella Maris House and the staff there asked them to pass on their thanks to the Club.

U12 Bredagh V Ballygalget

Score Bredagh 1-0 Ballygalget 4-0

The match was played in heavy conditions after a day of almost non-stop rain which thankfully eased off just before the start of the match. Bredagh were under pressure from a strong Ballygalget team from the start and the defence with Maebh Wills, Ciara McKillop and Meg Kieran defended well before Ballygalget finally breached Nuala McManus the netminder. Two more goals were to follow soon after as Bredagh battled bravely to stem the tide. Centre back and captain Molly McMullan was outstanding in the first half soaking up a lot of pressure and working the ball through to the midfield where Aideen McPeak, Lucy Jennings and Maebh Devlin were starting to get to grips with their counterparts. Ella Durkin was coming more and more into the game with an increasing supply of the ball she started to carry the attack to the heart of the Ballygalget defence and was indeed, unlucky not to score when she was penalised for taking the ball into her hand for a third time. Bredagh conceded another goal just before half time to end the half 4.0- 0.0 in arrears.

The second half was to prove a much more productive affair as Bredagh started to get more possession and take the game to Ballygalget. Again Molly McMullan was playing a heroic part at the heart of the Bredagh defence and helped set up increasingly frequent Bredagh attacks. The midfield were also getting on top with Lucy, Aideen and Maebh battling for every ball. Ella Durkin continued to carry the ball to the heart of the Ballygalget defence and it was Ella who was to get Bredagh’s first goal from a free almost 35 yards from the goal which she sweetly struck to the net. Bredagh continued to press for another score which would have given the score a fairer reflection but it was not to be. Hannah McKegney worked very hard and was unlucky not to score. Aine Wills and Aoife McCanny tried hard to breach the Ballygalget defence with a limited supply of the ball in the first half. They were replaced by Emer McIlroy and Rhionach Kelly who are gaining in confidence and ability from getting more game time. Hananh and Ella played well throughout and are beginning to pose a real threat to opposing defences. The midfield of Aideen, Lucy and Maebh are also improving with every game and forming a very effective partnership. Centre back Molly McMullan was the best player on view and is really benefiting from playing at U14 level. The full back line finishing with Kati Mulholland, Olivia Ray and Ciara McKillop and netminder, Nuala McManus kept a strong Ballygalget team scoreless in the second half which was a real achievement.
Overall it was a good team performance particularly in the second half and the team are showing real signs of progress.

Senior League Division 3

Ballygalget 8.3 v Bredagh 1.0 Mon 19th May 2009
(Denise Stevenson 1.0)
The reality of having moved up a division is becoming clearer to the Bredagh girls as the season progresses and we continue to meet teams that serve as a reminder of the level of commitment and team spirit required if we are to progress any further. Indeed, after the first round matches – 1 draw and four defeats, the thoughts must now shift from challenging for the title to survival in Division 3. It is pointless to hide behind the fact that the side has been hit by a series of injuries, that we struggle to effectively manage fixtures with our dual players who are absent too often, that we lose players at exam times or even that the difficulty with lack of suitable training space holds us back.

We have from our last four matches witnessed the level of speed, skill and physical presence with which the opposing teams go about their business in Division 3 and need now to set our targets firmly on achieving a much higher work rate and commitment from all of our players at training. We have the gift of an experienced and dedicated coach Rory Galway who has spent time on the training ground reinforcing the basic skills and trying to build on the fitness levels and he needs to reap some rewards for his effort.

The skill is there with most players but we now need to establish a level of fluency within our play and develop the ability to pass the ball around the pitch without losing possession as we have seen from our stronger opponents Longstone and Ballygalet. We must capitalise on opportunities to seize points from games, which are within our reach, as was the case in the Darragh Cross and Newry Shamrocks games. We need to develop more mental toughness and tactical awareness as we have seen from Longstone’s pattern of play and ability to feed their key players who put their possession to good use. Additionally we need to show confidence and more self-belief in our own ability. These skills will only materialise on the training ground. With full team attendance at training and a mighty effort by everyone in the squad the desire for a major improvement on the return fixtures should kick in and turn the focus back to where it should be.
