U12 CAMOGIE 5.4.08 Portaferry v Bredagh
Portaferry 0.0 v Bredagh 2.2
The first league match of the season saw the U12’s away to Portaferry, on a sunny, cold and windy day.
It took a while for the girls to settle into their positions, but with lots of encouragement from the mentors on the side lines, they steadily got into the game. There were missed opportunities for scoring in the first half with Portaferry defending well, and the first half ended with no score.
After a half time talk the team pulled together and really got into the game. Bredagh dominated and managed to secure two goals and two points to ensure a win. The coaches were delighted with the team performance and it was great for all the girls to get share of the play.
Well done everyone, what a great start.

U 12 CAMOGIE CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
BREDAGH V BALLYGALGET
Saturday 15 September 2007
Final Score: Bredagh 1-1 Ballygalget 3.0
The long awaited Championship Final between Bredagh and Ballygalget took place last Saturday in Ballycran. The Bredagh girls started the game full of energy, enthusiasm and determination and seven minutes later the Captain Catherine Rocks opened the scoring with a long distance point, quickly followed by a cracking goal also scored by Catherine. Aishlinn McFarland, Ciara O' Gorman and Sarah McElroy took every opportunity to get the sliothar up to the forwards but the Ballygalget team came back immediately with their first goal and kept the pressure on for the rest of the first half, ending up with another goal in the dying minutes of the first half. The second half saw positional changes made on the Ballygalget team which turned the game into a mostly defensive one and our back line of Niamh McKinney, Clare Levelley and Shannon Mulholland were under intense pressure for most of this half. Our brilliant goalie Megan Hughes pulled off at least two great saves and was ably helped out when Ciara O'Gorman also saved a potential goal. With the centre field players, Sarah McElroy, Ciara O'Gorman and Catherine Rocks, supported by Olivia Boyle tied up in defence for most of this half, the forwards Niamh Hazzard, Monica McKay and Emer Kelly had little opportunity of scoring. All the substitutes; Hannah Graham in defence, Bria Kane and Helen Rooney playing forward made valuable contributions to the game, but could do little to stop Ballygalget getting one further goal. All were disappointed but the mentors and parents who travelled were really pleased at the standard of play and all the skills that the girls displayed. It was undoubtedly the best game of the season.
Team: Catherine Rocks (C), Megan Hughes, Shannon Mulholland, Niamh McKinney, Clare Levelley, Olivia Boyle, Sarah McElroy, Ciara O'Gorman, Aishlinn McFarland, Monica McKay, Emer Kelly, Niamh Hazzard, Hannah Graham, Bria Kane, Helen Rooney.

Bredagh U12 Camogs Do It Again!
Bredagh 9-4 Portaferry 0-0
On another wet Saturday afternoon in Cherryvale, Bredagh U-12s hosted Portaferry in the Quarter-final of the county championship. Bredagh were able to field nearly the same side which had come through against Liatroim in the previous round.
The match started with Bredagh applying early pressure on the Portaferry goal but unable to turn that pressure into scores. Once the girls got their usual attacking game going though, there was no stopping them. The first goal arrived after 10 minutes when Niamh Hazard finished of a good build up from the midfield and forward lines. I am afraid this is when the flood gates opened, Portaferry didn't have any answer to the strength of Catherine Rocks, Olivia Boyle, Ciara O'Gormon and Aislin McFarlane in the Bredagh midfield or Claire Levelley, Niamh Hazard, Emer Kelly and Monica McKay in the forward line. Bredagh finished the half strongly 5-0 0-0 up.
The second half started much as the first had ended with the play rarely leaving the Portaferry half and the Bredagh midfield and forwards taking their goals and points with great skill. Our 3 subs of Claire Minne, Bria Kane and Helen Rooney came into the forward line for the second half and all 3 were unlucky not to get onto the score sheet. This was another great team performance, even though Megan Hughes, Hannah Graham, Niamh McKinney and Shannon Mulholland in our back line didn't see much action everyone played really well. Thanks to everyone who came to support us on such a wet day and we look forward to seeing you for the Semis.
U12 Championship Quarter Final Bredagh v Portaferry is on Saturday 23rd June 2007 at 2.30.
All players to meet at Cherryvale at 1.30.
U12 Camogie Match v Ballyholland Sat 16th June cancelled!
U12 Championship Bredagh 2.2 Liatroim 2.0
Sat 9th June 2007
The first round of the Championship was against a very strong Liatroim team on the hottest day of the year. The first half saw Bredagh dominate the game and score two goals by Monica McKay with the help of the strong forwards of Bria Kane, Sarah McElroy and Emer Kelly. These were also only achievable by the great team work and steely determination by the midfield players Sarah Sharkey, Olivia Boyle, Claire Levelly and Catherine Rocks. Liatroim came out determined to even the score in the second half and this brought our defence line of Shannon Mulholland, Niamh McKinney, Hannah Graham and our goalie Megan Hughes into action. They defended with all their might but despite their efforts Liatroim managed to score 2 goals to even the score. This was when the Bredagh U12's came into their own and fought for every ball. Following a wide by the Liatroim goalie a free was awarded and Emer Kelly kept steely cool to score a fabulous point to bring Bredagh into the lead. The match was fraught after this but a further free was awarded to Bredagh and again Emer Kelly took this to score yet another fantastic point to make a clear lead. We saw our subs Helen Rooney, Catherine Jennings and Niamh Hazard play their hearts out to help the team win the match. There was relief all around when the final whistle was blown and a very big thank you to all the supporters on the side line who encouraged the girls throughout.

After their win against Longstone last week the U12 girls were eager to repeat this again at home. Castlewellan tried to come back in the second half but the determination of the Bredagh girls put the game beyond doubt as they managed to score another 4 goals. This was the girls' biggest win so far!

U12 League
Longstone V Bredagh Friday 11 May 2007.
Bredagh travelled away to take on Longstone on the wettest and coldest night in weeks. The girls spirits were not dampened and they started the game strongly and fought for every ball and such was the power of their game and strength of the team that we finished the first half 2 goals to nil. The second half saw Longstone come out with determination as they lifted their game and managed to draw level. However, Catherine Rocks took a point from a free securing victory for Bredagh
Final Score: Longstone 2-0 Bredagh 2-1
Bredagh v An Riocht - Sat 28 April 2007 Our first U12 home game of the season saw us up against An Riocht: last years championship winners and this game proved to be a match worth watching, with both teams equally determined to win. Such was the power of our U12 defence that An Riocht only had one chance of scoring in the first half, but failed to do so. An Riocht came back the stronger in the second half and although Bredagh played brilliantly throughout, the An Riocht girls scored two goals. All the coaches and spectators for Bredagh felt that the team had all played remarkably well and were unfortunate not to score. We will all be looking forward to the return game.
Team: Claire Levelley (C), Megan Hughes, Shannon Mulholland, Aislinn McFarland, Hannah Graham, Ciara O’Gorman, Catherine Rocks, Olivia Boyle, Cliona Leeson, Helen Rooney, Monica McKay, Ellen McVeigh, Niamh Hazard, Niamh McKinney, Francesca, McVey.
An Riocht 2 -0
Bredagh 0 -0
St John's 1-1 Bredagh 1-0 South Antrim U-12 Championship Semi-final, September 19th - St John's 1-1 Bredagh 1-0. Bredagh played very well in this game at Falls Park. Jemma Mullan in centre field had a fantastic match giving support play to both the back line and the forward line. Bredagh were unlucky not to score in the second half but strong defensive play from St Johns kept their team on top.
County Final Sunday, August 27th, Bredagh 0-0 An Riocht 2-1 - it proved to be an historic weekend for Bredagh Camogs with the U-12s competing in the club’s first under-age camogie final. Despite losing to An Riocht on Sunday in Clonduff in the county decider, by 2-1 to 0-0, it was a significant milestone for Bredagh and a tribute to all the hard work by the Camogie committee over several years. Bredagh were the underdogs against a strong An Riocht side and the match was played in front of a large crowd of supporters from both clubs, helped by perfect weather conditions. Bredagh made a slow start and conceded two goals in the first seven minutes.
However, hard work by Lucy Russell, Jemma Mullan and Sara Sharkey got the ball up to the forwards and they were unlucky not to score. Eve McPeake, Eimear Kane, Paula McKay and Aishlinn McFarland were always a threat. Bredagh had a much better second half, holding An Riocht to a single point. Catherine Rocks had an outstanding game in goals and was supported in the back line by Maeve Colton, Julie McElroy, Claire LeVelly and Liadh White.
Although this result was not what Bredagh was aiming for, the mentors and players can take a lot from the match and can build upon this result in next year’s campaign. As Ben Fox, Chairperson of the Down Camogie Board commented, ‘It bodes well for the Bredagh club that both your U-10s and U-12s were in finals this weekend’
Bredagh 2-0 Liatroim 1-1
Championship Semi-final, Saturday July 1st - Bredagh proved their worth in winning a very exciting game, despite entering the game as underdogs. True to form, this determined and spirited side were up for it and meant business right from the throw-in. The centre field super trio of Lucy Russell, Orlaith Downey and Gemma Mullan took control of play, feeding the ball into the forward line and a great ground strike by Emer Kane gave Bredagh their first goal. Liatroim replied quickly with a goal and Bredagh fought hard up front with forwards Sarah Sharkey and Aishlinn McFarland showing great determination and their efforts were rewarded when Aishlinn scored Bredagh's second goal just before half-time. The second half was tense with excitement as both sides battled for their place in the Final. Liatroim put on the pressure but strong leadership from the centre field players and two great saves from Catherine Rocks in goals held Liatroim to a one point score and saw Bredagh II through to the final.
Next: Bredagh are looking forward to the Championship Final against the winners of Portaferry v Ballycran, date to be confirmed.
Team: Lucy Russell (captain), Paula McKay, Clare LeVelee, Bria Kane, Niamh McKinney, Shannon Mulholland, Catherine Rocks, Orlaith Downy, Gemma Mullan, Aishlinn McFarland, Emer Kelly, Emer Kane, Roisin McCann, Eleanor Lennon and Aoife Wilson.
St Michael's Win

Cumann na mBunscoil Championship Final, Thursday June 23rd - St Michael's won the Primary Schools title at Casement Park with a two-point win over the Bunscoil in a thrilling final which went to extra time. The harsh weather conditions did not deter the girls from the throw-in as they settled down to the business of retaining their title with the will-to-win and the desire to bring back the Cup to their school for the second time. In the first half both sides were contesting every ball and the midfield trio of Sara Sharkey, Julie McElroy and Liath White kept the ball in good supply to the forwards. So tight was the marking and the level of goalkeeping that no score was scored throughout normal time and the action really picked up with five minutes each way of extra time. Sara McElroy, sister to Julie, had a fantastic game in the forwards and has star potential for the club and school in the years ahead. Sara was supported by Emer Kelly who scored St Michael's winning goal with a great shot to the corner of the net. With just minutes remaining the Bunscoil put on the pressure scoring a point and the last few minutes were extremely exciting with every puck of the ball potentially dangerous and almost all of the Bunscoil players driving forward for the final attempt. Team captain Catherine Rocks played superbly throughout the match but particurlarly well in the backline in the last five minutes, breaking up all attempts by the Bunscoil forewards and with the support of Bria Kane, Claire LeVelee, Roisin McCann and Paula McKay in goals. St Michael's were deserving winners of this beautiful cup. A special thank you to the mothers who drove to Newcastle to pick up the girls from camp and drive them back again.
Team: Catherine Rocks (captain), Paula McKay, Bria Kane, Claire LeVelee, Roisin McCann, Sara Sharkey, Julie McElroy, Liath White, Sara McElroy, Emer Kelly, Shannon Mulholland, Helen Rooney, Kate Wilson, Katie McVeigh and Eleanor Lennon.
Bredagh 4-0 Ballygalget 1-0 Championship, Saturday June 24 - the girls played really well to record an excellent victory. The next League game is scheduled for Wednesday June 28 at 7.00pm - Portaferry v Bredagh (players to meet at 5.30pm).
An Riocht Pictures
An Riocht Blitz Saturday, June 10th - Bredagh camogs won five of their six matches at this 7-a-side Blitz to finish as Runners-up.
The conditions were perfect for camogie and the girls were up for it. The first match was against An Riocht, the hosts and eventual winners. It was a tough start and the girls had no time to settle, losing by five goals to nil. The next match was an easy win against Liatroim B with Bredagh's Eve McPeake (2), Jemma Mullan and Emer Kane finding the net in the 4-0 to 0-0 victory. At this point the girls were finding their stride and they beat Ballygalget by just one point, 2-0 to 1-2 with goals from Eve and Anna Holland. Bredagh's fourth game brought more success against Liatroim, winning by 4-1 to 2-0. The goals were from Jemma, Eve and two from the young Anna Holland, while the point was a fabulous effort from Maeve Coulton from centre field. It went over the bar and over the trees, the ball was never seen again! The girls did not want the games to stop as they went into their fifth game with an easy victory over Warrenpoint with goals from Eve, Jemma and a great goal from Niamh McKinney. The sixth and last game saw Bredagh beat An Riocht B by 4-2 to 0-0. Thanks to An Riocht for a very enjoyable tournament and congratulations to our girls for a well-deserved second place.
Bredagh 1- 0 Ballycran 1-0 League, Saturday June 3rd - this was probably the most exciting and highly competitive match so far this season. The girls came out determined not to let Ballycran overrun them. Most of the play was in our half for the first part of the match and we were so unlucky not to score as Paula McKay sent a few strikes just wide of the net. A few changes to the team in the second half made a difference and Emer Kane opened the scoring with a beautiful strike of the ball from at least 20 yards out. Ballycran really turned the pressure on and kept on the attack for the rest of the match, and when a free was given against us, they took the opportunity to score. We suffered quite a few injuries in the second half and really missed Orlaith Downey when she had to come off with a hand injury. The last five minutes saw the backs have to work extremely hard to keep the score level, and to their credit they never gave up. Catherine Rocks and Lucy Russell both worked in goals and did extremely well to deny Ballycran another win in the League. This time last year we could not score against this very experienced team – what a difference a year makes!! Well done everyone!
Team: Catherine Rocks, Lucy Russell, Julie McElroy, Emer Kane, Gemma Mullan, Ciara O’Gorman, Orlaith Downey, Paula McKay, Eve McPeake, Aislinn McFarland, Emer Murray, Claire LeVelly, Subs: Anna Holland, Bria Kane and Niamh McKinney.
Bredagh II 0-0 Ballygalget 3-0 League, Saturday May 13th - Bredagh 'Chicks with Sticks', also known as Bredagh II, thoroughly enjoyed themselves as they took on Ballygalget in perfect weather conditions in Cherryvale. They contested every ball from the throw-in. In centre field Liath White, Anna Hollywood and Catherine Rocks showed both skill and determination, especially Catherine who on one occasion almost scored a goal from centre field, connecting first time on a ground ball. The Bredagh back line was put under pressure from early on but both Julie McElroy and Claire LeVelee were excellent under pressure, only conceding three goals against a very talented forward line. Bredagh were unlucky not to score in the second half and credit goes to Aishling McFarland and Amaya Moore for their hard work against a strong defence.
Team: Liath White, Catherine Rocks, Paula McKay, Ciara O'Gorman, Emer Kelly, Claire LeVelee, Anna Hollywood, Julie McElroy, Anna Holland, Cliodhna Leeson, Aishlin McFarland, Ellen McGourty, Katie McVeigh, Amaya Moore, Shannon Mulholland and Helen Rooney.
Team Picture
Ballygalget 1-0 Bredagh I 0-0 League, May 6th - Bredagh travelled to Ballygalget for their first away game of the seaon and came up against a young but determined home team. Although the city girls all tried their hardest they were unable to score. They defended well until the second half when Ballygalget scored their one and only goal but remained determined not to let Ballygalget through again.
Team: Eve McPeake (captain), Maeve Colton, Bria Kane, Emer Kane, Gemma Mullen, Niamh McKinney, Lucy Russell, Niamh Wade, Cliodhan Leeson, Aishlin McFarland, Paula McKay, Catherine Rocks, Liadh White, Claire LeVelle and Ciara O'Gorman.
Training
John Mulholland took the U-12s for a warm-up. All of the camogs, aged from U-8 to U-15, are out every Saturday in Cherryvale from 3.15-5.00pm. The training sessions have been very well attended this year with over ninety children turning out. Bredagh camogie is also delighted to welcome on board seven new coaches: Patricia McCauley, Mary Hazard, Bernie Deighan, Lisa McGee, Karen Treanor, Susie Irvine and John Mulholland.

Bredagh 1 7-0 Bredagh 2 0-0 Bredagh U-12 Camogs started the 2006 League with a strange fixture - between Bredagh 1 and Bredagh 2, otherwise known as 'Chicks with Sticks!' For the record, Bredagh 1 won the game on Saturday 22nd April by seven goals to nil, but the scoreline does not reflect the true spirit of the game for the action was non-stop from beginning to end with neither side wanting to give an inch. Bredagh 1 dominated the first half with Orlaith Downey in control in goals and Lucy Russell and Niamh McKinney dominating in defence. Jemma Mullan was outstanding in midfield, playing the ball into the talented Emer Kane. The very accurate Eve McPeake slammed home four goals in the first half followed by another from Emer Kelly. The 'Chicks with Sticks' fought back in the second half and dominated midfield, allowing Bredagh 1 to score only once, a goal by Anna Hollywood. The best players for 'Chicks with Sticks' were Catherine Rocks and Aislinn McFarland who worked tirelessly against a much more experienced side. Notable mentions go to Paula McKay, Ciara O'Gorman, Roisin McCann, Claire LeValee and Emer Murray, who all played their hearts out and can only go from strength to strength as the season progresses.
