South Belfast Princessess on Tour 2007 Bredagh girls win shield competition at Newtownshandrum tournament.
Bredagh girls won the Shield final of the Newtownshandrum tournament hosted by the county Cork club on Saturday 15th September in a nail-biting match against Bruree, Co Limerick. Level after normal time and extra time, the match was decided in a '45' shoot-out. Each team had to take three 45s using three different players. Niamh O'Connor, Rachel Graham and Emer Murtagh were the bravehearts who carried Bredagh hopes and they did not disappoint. Niamh pointed her 45, Rachel was unlucky that hers dropped short (but she had scored during the match) and then Emer effortlessly pucked the ball over the bar to great scenes of jubilation with all her team mates racing on to the pitch in celebration.
Earlier in the day, the team recorded a very impressive victory over a weakened Blackrock side from Cork city, and over Passage West, another Cork team. Bredagh were, however, taught a lesson in hurling by the Newtown girls who went on to win the Cup final (against Millstreet), but learned a lot from the graceful and stylish camógs of Newtown. The scores of the day were widely spread throughout the team with Rebecca Holywood getting a hat-trick against Blackrock and Shannon Murray getting 2 goals. Rachel Graham got 1 -01, while Niamh O'Connor got two very fine points, one off her left on the run. Anna Lyttle completed the scoring in that game. The scores in the Passage game came from Katie Campbell (with a great long range point), Caitríona McDonnell, Shannon Murray and Rachel Graham (each of whom got a goal). Both points from play in the shield final came from Rachel Graham as well.
Apart from the activities on the pitch, the Bredagh girls made friends with the Newtown girls (and indeed some boys) and look forward to hosting the Newtown girls in Belfast next year. Sarah Maloney was presented with a special commemerative shirt as player of the tournament and the Newtown club was also presented with a number of Bredagh jerseys for their mentors and players. So don't be surprised in future if when travelling through North Cork you see plenty of Bredagh jerseys!
Thanks to Newtown
Bredagh GAC is very grateful to John Maloney, Angie Doyle, Noreen Herlihy, Susan Clifford, the Copse family, Joan Tohill, Maura Twomey, the Noonans, and all the other families of Newtown who hosted us, not forgetting the boys of Newtown who played their part in making it a memorable weekend!

U14 League: Bredagh v Castlewellan Bredagh 16 06 Castewellan 0 0
19th June 2007, Cherryvale
Castlewellan, the newest camógie team in Down, came to Cherryvale to complete this league fixture knowing that they had an uphill struggle, given the age profile of their squad. Nevertheless, they acquitted themselves quite well and we wish them every encouragement in establishing camógie in the town. The Bredagh girls in the meantime used the game to develop their skills. Paula McKay made her debut amongst the forwards and notched up a number of scores. Sarah Quinn also scored her first hurling goal with a looped shot that dropped over the keeper. It was a night for the forwards and they did not disappoint with Catríona McDonnell scoring a hat-trick and others like Anna Lyttle and Rebecca Holywood showing plenty of skill. Catherine Rocks got one of the rare opportunities to play outfield late in the second half when Paula replaced her in goal. All the players got to play, in what was our second last league game. Only Portaferry are left and the girls now have two victories and 2 defeats in their league campaign.
U14 County Championship
Bredagh 0 0 Ballycran 4 04
The final score failed to tell the full tale of this tensely fought first round championship match (but what in effect was the final) played at Cherryvale on 5th June. Bredagh held Ballycran to 1-01 in the first half and Rebecca Hollywood and Emer Murtagh for Bredagh were unlucky not to score.
In the second half the effort to contain one of the best sides in the country began to tell on the Bredagh girls but they can be proud of the fact that in each of the three games they have played against Ballycran this season they have narrowed the gap between the City girls and the Ards girls. Of the Bredagh girls Gemma Mullan (who had a 'stormer' on Laura Hughes), Rachel Graham, Emma Holland and Orlaith Downey were the most prominent. Catherine Rocks had a good game in goal making some significant saves.
Ballycran are now raging hot favourites for the county title and proceed to Kilkenny in a fortnight to defend their All Ireland crown. All of Bredagh wish them well as their success is important for Down camógie.'

U14's win Ulster Feile
Six months worth of hard work by the Bredagh U14s paid off on Saturday 4th May when the girls won Division 2 of the first ever Ulster Camógie Féile, in a thrilling final - played on Ballycastle's superb new pitches against Glen Maghera, who had earlier beaten them in the round robin competition. These girls began training in the gym at Shaftesbury Leisure Centre on Saturday 4th November last and have trained right through on a non-stop basis since then, notching up over 35 training sessions. Ulster Féile Day is a great Ulster institution but is intense and arduous, beginning in Cherryvale at 8 am and finishing in Ballycastle at 6pm that evening, taking in 3 matches in Swatragh and a parade in Ballycastle along the way. In total the girls played 150 minutes of camogie across the day, and needed every single member of the panel to pull them through.
Mrs McAuley, a Carnlough native now in her 80s, who played camógie in her day, deserves a further and special mention as the grandmother of 3 Bredagh players, Eimear Kane, Anna Lyttle and Eve McPeake. It was reported that she was particularly pleased with Bredagh's victory over Cushendall earlier in the day
No wonder then that by the time the final came round there were tired limbs and weary spirits on the Bredagh side. Peter McKay hastily acquired a supply of 'Lucozade' and this gave the Bredagh girls the boost they needed. The strong breeze blowing down the pitch from the pavilion end played a big factor in the game, with our girls playing with it in the first half. Emer Murtagh scored a fine point from a free and Rebecca Holywood (whose twin is boys u14 goalkeeper, Jack) scored a marvellous goal, displaying the scoring instincts she's been displaying all season, jab lifting and soloing to goal and striking on the run. This left the score at 1 01 to no score at half time.
Subs bench at Swatragh
However, the girls then had to face into the strong breeze and came under sustained pressure from a fine Glen team, very ably led by their midfield partners, who managed to notch up three points. The girls came under intense pressure and only some great goalkeeping by under12 star Catherine Rocks kept the team in it. Catherine had earlier played magnificently in the earlier loss to Glen and must be one of the best shot stoppers in the county at her age level. A last minute '45' gave Glen a chance to equalise and send the match to extra time but was narrowly sent wide. The scenes of jubilation at the final whistle from players and supporters alike continued into the early evening.
For some players, this victory helped erase the disappointment of last year's u12 county final defeat to An Ríocht. Players alternately cried and laughed through the evening, overcome by the emotions of it all. Our thanks to the parents and supporters who helped us out on this arduous but great day: Mark Lennon, Dorothy and Peter McKay and Monica, Rosie Burroughs, Patricia McAuley and Mrs McAuley, Mrs and Mrs Paul McHugh, Una Wilson, and Saorla and Orla.
Earlier in their season, the coaches (foolishly!) accepted that if the girls won the Ulster Féile they would agree to have their nails painted in Bredagh colours, just the way the girls had them painted for the Down Féile. Needles to say, Fintan and the 2 Ciarans are not looking forward to this.
The day began in Swatragh at 10am in Michael Davitt's GAC on surfaces superbly suited to camogie. In their first game this team became the first Bredagh team to beat a Cushendall outfit, in what was a great game of camogie. (Orla O'Hara for Cushendall - a relation of Antrim senior hurlers, the McCambridges - must be an Antrim prospect for the future.) The final score was Bredagh 2 02 Cushendall 1 02, but the Bredagh girls made hard work of getting their scores. Shannon Murray and Eimear Kane scored the goals, with Niamh O'Connor (free) and Katie Campbell (formerly a gaelic footballer with St Brigid's) getting the points. Katie's score was all the more impressive when you consider that she picked up a camán for the first time last November. Bredagh were ecstatic after this victory - especially considering the same opposition beat them comfortably at under 12 level 2 years ago.
The girls came back to earth with a bump in the match against Glen who managed to curtail the Bredagh girls' normal game with some tough ground camogie. A goal in the first half and a point in the second for Glen gave them a 1 01 to nil victory. The manner of the defeat, with Bredagh struggling to get scoring chances, made it even more difficult a result to contemplate.
Everything then hinged on the final match against Greenlough and the Bredagh girls' hard work through the winter paid huge dividends. The final score was 7 -05 to no score with Shannon Murray notching up 4 01, Niamh O'Connor, Katie Campbell and Eimear Kane each getting 1-01, while Gemma Mullan and Rebecca Holywood both got a goal each. When word filtered through that Glen had beaten Cushendall 5 01 to no score, it was clear that the Bredagh girls would get another opportunity in the final to show their skills and this time 'round they didn't disappoint.
Squad:
Eleanor Lennon, Niamh O'Connor, Anna Lyttle, Eimear Kane, Rebecca Hollywood, Sarah Quinn, Emer Murtagh, Emma Holland, Claire Browne, Rachel Graham, Orlaith Downey, Shannon Murray, Maeve Colton, Paula McKay, Eve McPeake, Gemma Mullan, Lucy Russell, Liadh White, Caitriona McDonnell, Catherine Rocks, Katie Campbell, Jenny McHugh, Ellen Mahon-O'Neill.
U14's at Down Camógie Féile Bredagh U14s made great progress in this year’s county camógie Féile in Castlewellan on Saturday 21st April. For the first time they progressed through to the Cup competition, having beaten An Ríocht, victors over the U12s in last year’s County Championship Final, in the first round. Caitríona McDonnell got the all important goal. Shannon Murray and Rebecca Holywood were unlucky not to add to that score in a game in which Bredagh were on top despite the fact that only Catríona’s goal separated the sides.
 Rachel/Emma/Catriona and Shannon
In the Semi-Final they came up against All-Ireland champions, Ballycran, who in fact went on to win the Final against Portaferry. Bredagh gave the Ards girls a fright in the first half with the score only 1 01 to 0 – 0 at half time in Ballycran’s favour. Laura Hughes of Ballycran was principally the difference between the teams but she struggled to make an impact against the impressive Rachel Graham. Gemma Mullan in midfield, partnering captain, Niamh O’Connor, had a great game. The final score of 5 -02 didn’t do justice to the Bredagh girls’ efforts with a number of players, like Orlaith Downey and Eleanor Lennon, picking up injuries in their attempt to halt Ballycran, who had earlier beaten Clonduff 4 -02 to 0 -00. This was a very satisfying display by the girls after months of hard work indoors and outdoors, and they can now look forward to a successful league campaign.
Full squad:
Eleanor Lennon, Niamh, O’Connor, Anna, Lyttle, Eimear Kane, Rebecca Hollywood, Sarah Quinn, Emer Murtagh, Emma Holland, Claire Browne, Rachel Graham, Orlaith, Downey, Shannon, Murray, Maeve, Colton, Tiarna, Devlin, Paula McKay, Eve McPeake, Gemma Mullan, Lucy Russell, Liadh White, Caitriona McDonnell, Catherine Rocks, Katie Campbell, Jenny McHugh, Ellen Mahon-O’Neill,
Championship U-14 Championship, Sunday October 8th - Ballycran beat Bredagh. Rossa 3-0 Bredagh 2-1 South Antrim Championship Second Round, Thursday September 28th - Bredagh 2-1 Rossa 3-0.
County Star! Well done to Peita McAlister who was selected to travel to Keady with the Down U-14 squad to play Armagh in the Championship.
Sarsfields 0-0 Bredagh 0-2 South Antrim Championship, Saturday September 9th - Bredagh progressed to the next round after beating Sarsfields away. Nicole O'Connor scored a point from play in the first half to open the scoring. Bredagh defence managed any attempts to break through with ease and Roísin McAlister and Peita McAlister worked hard throughout the game in midfield pushing the ball forward at every opportunity. However Bredagh failed to capitalise on many goal scoring opportunities but did add a point from a well executed free from Nicole O'Connor in the second half. Final score Bredagh 0.2 Sarsfields 0.0.
Gort na Mona Blitz 7-a-side Tournament, Saturday September 2nd - the good thing about having camogie sticks on this occasion was that if the rain had got any heavier they could have been used for paddles! Only 5 out of 8 teams turned up and the decision was made to press ahead with each team playing 4 games instead of two separate sections as was planned. Bredagh came up against a young Gort na Móna side in the first game and applied pressure from early in the first half. The midfielders Paula McKay and Meabh Hollywood worked hard at getting the ball forward whilst forwards Emma Holland and Alice Donaldson battled for every ball and found the net 5 times in the first half to no reply. In the second half Bredagh continued to dominate and Alice added to the score with a point. Final score 5.1 - 0.0.
The next game was against a much tougher Aghagallon side and this time it
was the Bredagh defence who felt the pressure. Sian Deighan made a few good
saves and could do little to prevent the 2 goals which went past her. Emer
Murtagh, Aoife Jackson and Rachel Graham never gave up and battled at the
back and a great all-round effort helped to keep the scoreline down in the
second half. Tara Bergin was also part of this effort but had few
opportunities up front to shine and will have to save her skills for another
day. Hopefully a drier one. Final score Aghagallon 2.2 Bredagh 0.0
The rain was relentless so it was decided to call things to a halt after
the second round matches were played. Aghagallon took the trophy as the only
team to take full points.
Bredagh 5-0 Attical 2-0 Championship, Monday June 26th - the girls pulled off the surprise of the season with this First Round victory at Cherryvale. Fielding with a seriously understrength side due to seven players being at the Gaelteacht, alongside a clash with an U-16 Girls Football Championship match in Newcastle, the Bredagh camogs would have been forgiven for having the impression that they were only fulfilling the fixture. Half the team was made up of U-12 players but from the throw-in it was evident that this team was no pushover. The play was fast and furious. A goal from Alice Donaldson early on in the game gave the girls the confidence to move the ball into attack. The ball was moved on with several examples of fine ground striking, as well as impressive solo runs from Anna Lyttle, Niamh O'Connor and Orlaith Downey. Sian Deighan didn't put a foot wrong in defence, while Emer Murtagh kept several goals out in the first half. Rachel Graham and Emma Holland played very well in defence, and there was tremendous commitment shown in the midfield and in the forward lines from Lucy Russell, Gemma Mullan and Eve McPeake. Alice Donaldson, who scored three goals, showed great leadership to the younger girls, and she played hard from the start to the finish. Meadhbh Donaghy worked really hard in the forwards, as did Catriona McDonnell, who scored two lovely goals. Emer Kane came on as a sub, and she worked really hard to make this a memorable win, the first this year for the U-14s.
An Riocht Team
An Riocht Blitz Saturday, June 10th - the girls battled hard in very hot conditions against some tough opposition, winning one game, drawing another and losing twice. There was some good defensive work by Sian Deighan in goal, Rachel Graham, Meabh Hollywood and Emma Holland. Nicole O'Connor and Peita
McAlister worked tirelessly in midfield, taking scores and linking well with
forwards Alice Donaldson, Catherine Murphy and Niamh O'Connor, whose
high work rate was also rewarded with several scores.

Ballycran bt Bredagh League, Tuesday 9th May - Ballycran beat Bredagh in the Féile and they were again too strong on their home ground. However, the girls didn't let their heads go down and they lifted their game in the second half with strong play from Rachel Graham, Róisín McAlister and Meabh Hollywood in the back line. Peita McAlister and Nicole O'Connor did their very best at midfield, and Naoimh O'Connor did what she could in the forward line.

Back row, left to right: Aoife Walsh, Deboragh Cavanagh, Tara Bergin, Roisin McAllister, Nicole O'Connor. Front: Emer Kane, Anna Lyttle, Claire McKenna, Pieta McAllister.

Féile The U-14 Bredagh camogs did the club proud at Castlewellan on Saturday 29th April. They turned out in the first round against a very strong Ballycran team, and held them to a 2-4 to 0-0 win, the lowest score for Ballycran in the competition! Having lost out in the first round to the eventual winners, the girls then went on to beat Attical in the Shield Competition semi-final, only to lose to Longstone in the final by 1-1 to 0-0. They did, however, win - for the second year in a row - the BEST DRESSED AWARD, and they very much deserved this, as they all wore their Bredagh kit with pride. Their grit and determination shone through, and they certainly showed that this team was going to be a force to be reckoned with in the future.
