Aquinas in All-Ireland Final

All Ireland semi-final Colleges ‘C’ Division
Aquinas Grammar 1-6
Mercy Mounthawk, Kerry 0-7

Aquinas Grammar are celebrating after reaching the All-Ireland final of Colleges football for the first time in their history against the highly fancied Kerry school (Mercy Mounthawk)by a narrow two point margin.
Aquinas started the match much sharper and playing with a strong breeze ran into an early lead in the first five minutes. Tim Durkan opened the scoring with a clinically taken goal quickly followed by a well worked point by Niall Nolan. It took the Kerry lads some time to settle as the Aquinas defence played with ferocious intensity. Cormac White, Shane Flaherty, Justin Stronge, Emmett Costello and Mark McConville demonstrated excellent tenacious tackling by quickly breaking down the Kerry advances.
As the first half progressed Peter Graham added a further point with his pace in the forward line causing major problems for the Kerry backs. Rory McCormick(Team captain) ran at the Kerry defence and tagged on two points as the Belfast lads tried to build a strong lead using their first half wind advantage. Sean Irwin extended that lead with an excellent point from a tight angle. The Kerry lads did however score three points before the break leaving a five point margin at the restart.
The Aquinas management made a few changes in the second half as Peter Graham moved out to the half forward line and Daniel Nolan was introduced to the game.
The strong wind meant that the Kerry lads were gradually able to narrow the Aquinas lead and with fifteen minutes to go the gap was down to three points. Mark McConville was then unfortunate to be dismissed for a second yellow card but this seemed to lift the other fourteen players as they battled for every ball in a very tense closing period. Rory McCormick got a late point to ease the pressure as the boys finished the game with a narrow two point margin.
The Manager, Aquinas teacher Paul Evans was full of praise for the lads given the nature of the hard fought victory against the boys from the mighty kingdom of Kerry. He also was keen to point out that there is more work to be done as they return to Belfast to prepare for the first All Ireland final for the school.

The strong Bredagh and Carryduff support at the match were delighted to see the evidence on display of the hard work that both clubs have been undertaking in recent years at youth level.

Aquinas Win BT Nolan Cup

BT Nolan Cup Final
Aquinas Grammar 1-10
Loreto, Coleraine 1-8

Aquinas Grammar is celebrating after winning the Nolan Cup for the first time in their history against the highly fancied Loreto College by a narrow two point margin. The school had lost out in three finals in the last seven years but on this occasion the team were much more hungry than their opponents and in the first 20 minutes had scored a total of 1-4 to 0-1. The goal came from Peter Graham who was in sharp form and was one of twelve Bredagh players in the Aquinas squad many of whom had gained invaluable experience in their minor club championship campaign last year as they reached the Down All County semi-final.
Loreto forwards found it very difficult to create many chances due to the tenacious tackling of Bredagh pairing Cormac White (Man of the match) and Emmett Costello. The Carryduff duo of Shane Flaherty and Mark McConville were also very prominent in defence. The three Bredagh players at midfield ( Niall Nolan , Paddy Hannity and Michael McAllister) came out on top against the physically stronger Loreto boys. The half forward line all got on the scoresheet with Carryduff player Rory McCormick (Team captain) in the centre notching up 0-3 flanked by the Bredagh duo of Sean Irwin (0-2) and Jimmy McCaffrey (0-1). In the full forward line Bredagh player, second half substitute Tim Durkan scored a well taken point to seal a memorable victory for the school.
This achievement is clear evidence that the hard work not only in the school itself but also at youth level in both the Bredagh and Carryduff clubs is now starting to bear fruit.

Aquinas team : Bredagh: C White, E Costello, P Hannity, M McAllister, N Nolan, J McCaffrey(0-1), S Irwin(0-2), C Devlin, P Graham (1-1).Carryduff: R McCormick (0-3) , J Stronge (0-1), M McConville(0-1), S Flaherty. Other clubs: D McCrory, S McIlvenny

Haiti Connection 2008

Donal Durkan, Bredagh U-14 football coach, visited Haiti earlier in the summer on a busines trip. Donal gathered up a number of old Bredagh jerseys from club members and brought them over for some Haitian children. A selection of photos of the children wearing the jerseys are shown below. The children were delighted with the jerseys and a big thank you to all who contributed.

U-13 Bredagh v Bryansford

Sunday 2nd December 2007
Bredagh U-13's championship hopes came to an end today with a defeat by Bryansford in the semi-final of a great competition.
The Bredagh lads had played great football to achieve runners-up status in their group. This put them into a semi-final slot against Bryansford, winners of the other group. The game was played in testing conditions at Newcastle, with frequent showers and a very wet and mucky pitch. The game was evenly contested in the opening 15 minutes of the first half, with the home team's goal, scored within the first 3 minutes, being countered by 2 Bredagh points, first from John Mongan and then Niall Fitzpatrick. Bryansford went on to score 5 points in the first half with no reply from the visitors. The score stood 1-5 to 0-2 in favour of the home side at the half-time whistle.
Hopes were still high of a Bredagh comeback at the beginning of the second half however, this was short lived as Bryansford resumed with the same determination and hunger they showed in the first half. They went on to score 2-4 in the second half with Bredagh unable to convert any of the few chances they got. The closest from Bredagh was a blistering shot from Ruairi Sheridan which rebounded off the crossbar.
The conditions favoured the fitter team in the end with Bryansford coming through deserved winners. They kept their composure and game plan throughout the game which frustrated the Bredagh lads, who appeared to lack the same level of fitness and discipline. Seven of Bryansfords points were scored from frees around 20-30m from goal.
Nevertheless, this U-13 competition provided the Bredagh lads with football through to this late stage in the year and more importantly, it gave the U-12 lads that are moving up to U-14 next season, a taste of serious competitive East Down football.
Well done to all the players, coaches and parents who contributed to this very successful competition. See pics below.

U-20 Semi-Final

Bredagh 0-07 Bryansford 4-10
Bredagh lost out on an U-20 A final appearance despite a gutsy performance against a very useful Byansford outfit. In truth the scoreline doesn't do the boys justice as they should have notched another half dozen points at least.
There was a very encouraging panel of 23 for this match (22 of whom are still u20 next year), proving that the potential is there.
Thanks to all who turned out to support the team.
Best wishes and a speedy recovery to Matthew Quinn who suffered a broken bone in his wrist.

Bredagh 3-12 Drumaness 1-04

Sunday 28th October 2007
Bredagh U-20s achieved their realistic target of two wins from three in the East Down competition, with a well deserved victory over Drumaness by treble scores.
The scoreboard doesn't lie and Bredagh were the far superior team for much of this game. The boys started well and were leading after 20 minutes 0-05 to 0-02, when a good Hollywood/Steele move saw Joe net, to put a fairer gloss on the scoreline. The win was then never in doubt and when Niall Nolan and Matthew Hollywood goaled in the second half the victory was complete.
Owen Costello again put in a five star performance, assisted by Briggs, Gray, Colton and Steele. Paddy Byrne's free taking was excellent and Conal (Poland) O'Neill was a revelation in the right corner.
This section of the competition ended Castlewellan 6pts, Bredagh 4pts, L'island/T'connaght 2pts D'ness 0pts. We await news of play-offs - players should keep an eye on Tuesdays Irish News fixtures and the website for details.

U-20 Bredagh v Castlewellan

Sunday 21st October 2007
The U20s lost to a Castlewellan team made up of the 2005 Down and Ulster Minor Champions, with a few younger County Minors thrown in for good measure.
It was a difficult assignment, but the boys never gave up and plugged away well finishing with a bit of a flourish scoring 3 of the last 4 scores.
Best for Bredagh were Sean Irwin, Matthew Hollywood, Niall Devlin, Niall Boyle and Owen Costello.
Home to Drumaness next Sunday, in a game we must win. Meet 12.45.

East Down U-20 Tournament

Sunday 14th October 2007
Bredagh 4-05 Cnoc ni Drinn (Loughinisland/Teconnaught) 2-10

This Sunday a large crowd witnessed an excellent start to this competition by a young, but totally committed Bredagh team. The opposition came with a squad of 23 - Bredagh had only 17 and when the lively Paul Doole broke a bone in his hand after 10 minutes, things didn't look good.
But the boys stepped up to the mark and lead by 4 points at the break.
The second half saw the boys grind out a result against the odds. Cnoc ni Drinn introduced fresh legs and took the lead with five minutes to go, but again Bredagh fought back with Sean Irwin scoring the winning goal in the dying minutes.
Best for Bredagh were Owen Costello, Paul Boyd, Niall Devlin, Stevie Gray and Matthew Hollywood (2-01). Matthew Quinn scored 1-01 and the tireless Joe Steel had a goal dubiously ruled out for a square ball.

NB: Fixture change - we now do have an away match at Castlewellan next Sunday 21st. Meet 12.00 noon. Any problems call Frank on 07779 038152
PS: Castlewellan beat Drumaness 2-10 to 1-04 today.
PPS: Best wishes to Doolers on a speedy recovery.

Notice for U21 Footballers

18th September 2007
We are entering a team in this year's E Down u-21 Championship/League. It is expected to start after the playoffs in October.
All u17s - u21s are asked to attend Senior training as often as possible as and from now.
Ollie McWilliams and Kevin Muldoon will be at the training sessions and are part of the Management Team.
Training is 6.30 - 7.45 Mon/Wed/Fri. We need a good turnout, and some of the lads not currently training with the Seniors certainly need their fitness levels improved.
We will get a challenge match arranged before the first competitive game.
This competition gives us one more opportunity for silverware - we have potentially a very good squad - so lets all put in the effort.
