Bredagh IIIs 3-09 Bryansford IIIs 2-05 Sunday 4th May 2008
The Thirds recorded another excellent win at Cherryvale on Sunday evening against a much fancied Bryansford side.
The boys were well up for it and looked to have the game done and dusted when leading at half-time 1-06 to 0-01. The scores came from Paddy Finnegan (first goal of three from an Oisin Quinn pass) and points from Deccie Noble, Mark Galway, Peadar Doyle and Paul Doole.
Despite a warning at half time a little complacency and a strong Bryansford surge saw them socre 1-02 without reply on the restart.
In fairness to the boys though, they dug deep and Kevin Briggs and Deccie Noble took the game by the scruff of the neck in midfield and constantly got forward to good effect. The run and pass from Kevin Briggs for the second goal typified his display. He picked up the ball on our 20 metre line, soloed 50 metres and hammered a long range pinpoint pass to Paddy Finnegan who dispatched it to the net to the relief of the crowd.
Bredagh had many stars on the night - Keiran Kelly, Stevie Gray and Paddy Byrne at the back, Paul Doole and Paul Boyd up front - and of course Marty Durkan who used his head throughout.
Bredagh III's 3-01 Carryduff III's 1-06 Sunday 20th April 2008
The Third's recorded a win at Carryduff by the narrowest of margins in front of a massive following support on Sunday night.
In a game full of incident, but lacking poise in front of goal, Bredagh had their mentors and supporters on tender hooks for most of the game.
Carryduff fielded a strong team, but Bredagh had the lions share of play. On no fewer that 8-10 occasions the Bredagh forwards hit either the woodwork or the side netting, when scoring looked the easier proposition.
Paddy Finnegan opened the scoring from a free after the impressive Peadar Doyle was fouled. Then a Matthew Quinn shot somehow found the net and Bredagh looked to be coasting - but they weren't to score for another 20 minutes. The forwards rattled the bar, dropped shots into the goalkeeper and shot wide continuously. Carryduff lead by a 2 points at the break.
In the second half Bredagh again dominated play, but Carryduff picked off points. Eventually a Peadar Doyle flick found Finnegan who rattled the net. Bredagh lead by one and when sub Mark Galway brilliantly fielded, turned in put in Finnegan for another goal the result seemed assured. Not so - Carryduff tagged over 3 points without reply, and, but for brilliant defending by Paddy Byrne, Kieran Kelly and Barry Houston the game would have been lost.
A special mention for Neil Poland who deputised in goal for the injured Ciaran O'Keefe, his catching and kicking was excellent.
6 points out of 6 is a good start. The lack of a set of goal posts to shoot into at training remains a problem - but all in all - job done - "win ugly" is ok.
Next week at home to Bright - may be at the Dub @ 3pm - keep an eye on the web for details.
Bredagh 3rds V Darragh Cross Sunday 14th April 2008
Bredagh III's 1-09 Darragh Cross II's 1-07
Bredagh's newly formed 3rd team won it's first ever league game away to Darragh Cross on Sunday 13th April on a scoreline of 1-09 to 1-07, in a scintillating game watched by a good crowd - many of whom had travelled from the Ormaeau Road.
Bredagh started rather shakily and were soon 3-1 down. Darragh Cross looked the younger more mobile team in the early stages, but with Owen Costello's move to midfield, Bredagh soon took control. Two long distance points from Paul McGlade and Costello were the highlights of the first half - and Bredagh led 6-3 at the break.
The second half started with a Darragh Cross onslaught and they took the lead within 3 minutes scoring a goal and a point. The Ormeau boy dug deep though and with 10 to go the had it back to evens 0-08 to 1-05. Then Darragh Cross stuck over two excellent points and things looked omninous. But again Bredagh fought back, and sub Paul Doole netted from close range. Stevie Gray then set up a point for the ever lively Mickey Tunney to seal the hard fought victory.
A great start to the campaign - 25 players travelled and all were to be commended for their attitude and support.
Scorers: M Tunney 0-03, P McGlade 0-02, C Donnelly 0-01, O Costello 0-01, C Rafferty 0-01, P Doyle 0-01, P Doole 1-00
Liatriom 1-8 v Bredagh 5-15 Sunday 9th Sept 2007
Following their Wednesday game when they dispensed with nearest rivals St Pauls in a hard fought match the Reserves faced a major challenge having to win away to Liatriom on Sunday 9 Sept if they were to top the EDRL Table. Until recently Liatriom were major contenders.
The first 10 minutes showed the Bredagh’s appetite was hungry. Showing great experience Conor O’Keefe’s 2nd minute point settled the nerves. It then became clear they were not going to fail at this final hurdle as Leitriom were tortured by excellent Bredagh play all over the field.
Shane Donnelly’s tenacity set the standard that the rest of the defence followed to a man. At full back, Paddy Cassidy delivered a performance similar to his MotM display against St Pauls. In short, the defence didn’t put a foot wrong and Liatriom’s consolation goal in the dying minutes was the only offering conceded.
In the middle Rory McCaughey, Robbo and Charlie-Pat showed great under- standing that ensured Bredagh won loads of possession that created the platform for the forwards to torment the Liatriom defence.
Up front there were many heros. Matthew Hollwood lorded things and Liatriom could not find an answer. John McKenna’s and Niall Devlin’s pace at half forward ensured the attack always had numerous options available. As is normal, full forwards Conor O’Keefe and Paddy Finnigan were always on hand with important touches and many scores.
All in all a thoroughly impressive performance by a team that has worked hard all year. Topping the Table is only just reward for this.
Stop Press: A cameo appearance in the final 8 minutes by veteran John Gilmore
proved very popular with the valued travelling support (great to see Enda G add his support). John duly obliged with a well taken goal plus an assist for a point.

Bredagh Reserves exit Championship A depleted Reserve Team took on Castlewellan at Cherryvale on Saturday 1 Sept.
The Manager would like to personally thank the 16 players, several out of retirement and several untried, for ensuring the Club was able to fulfil this important fixture.
Bredagh were never going to win this and Castlewellan eventually ran out winners by 11pts. The lads who did turn out did however give the Club plenty to be proud of and to talk about.
Three men who probably thought their playing days were long past put in tremendous performances. Kieran O'Keefe made 3 point blank saves, Peadar Doyle got a great goal and Gilly bagged two of his own. (Gilly claims he could have had a hat trick but decided to gift one by passing to Paedar).
Young guns Kev McElroy, Dermot Colton, and Mark Galway worked tirelessly. Chris Savage and Corn were very effective in defence. Thanks again to all who made the effort."
Bredagh 2:13 Drumaness 2:5 Bredagh Reserves Win Again
The Reserve’s re-fixed match v Drumaness took place in fine weather at Cherryvale on Sun 12 Aug.
The local lads dominated first half procession but were very wasteful in front of goal. Drumaness defended very well and broke with great purpose but the Bredagh mid-field and half-back lines repelled the majority of these efforts. Despite having 90% procession Bredagh had only carved a 4pt lead at HT (0.6 – 0.2).
Stern words for the extravagant forwards at the break seemed to work as Bredagh got to work early in the 2nd half. Charlie-Pat McCartan provided the example of how Gaelic Football is best played simple and how to conjure simple points. Others followed this and the forward line began to get come on song. Matthew Hollywood and replacement Kieran Rice got busy and both scored fine goals.
A much better 2nd half performance meant that the result was all but decided with 10 minutes to go although two late Drumaness goals did keep it interesting. The first of these and goal of the match was a super solo effort by Bredagh’s own Oisin Quinn (on temporary loan to Drumaness). The manager wants to know who was marking him?
Niall Colton’s intelligent play when switched from LCB to LHF made things happen up front. Niall, with Jonny Kelly, LHB, were strongest contenders for the MotM award, although the telepathic inter-play between the Donnelly brothers, esp. during the 1st half, was also impressive.
The midfield pairing of Brendan and Hugh was very effective winning lots of procession and creating a strong platform for the attack.

Bredagh 6-10 Carryduff 0-5 Bredagh Reserves welcomed their local rivals Carryduff to Cherryvale on Sunday night for an east down reserve league game which was competitive but played in an excellent spirit.
Carryduff started the match on top and but for some wayward shooting would have taken an early lead. Bredagh slowly got into their stride with midfielder Mark Robinosn taking control of the game. Points from Paddy Finnegan (free), Mark Robinson and Stephen Gray put Bredagh into an early lead. Attempts to increase the lead were thwarted by the crossbar and both goalposts before an own goal was finally scored by one of the carryduff defenders. Carryduff responded with a couple of points before a further point by John McKenna and a scrambled goal by Charlie Pat McCartan extended the lead. What happened next will live long in memory of those in attendance and will become part of Bredagh folklore; Conor O’ Keefe who is renowned for his ability to kick wide’s from all angles stepped up to take a free kick from outside the 45. With the backing of a strong wind he unleashed a superb free kick and the ball sailed over the bar to the amazement of the large crowd of supporters. This score was followed up by another goal by Conor McDiad and a couple of further points to leave the half-time score Bredagh 3-6 Carryduff 0-2.
The second half followed a similar pattern with Mark Robinson producing an excellent display in midfield. The pacy Paddy Finnegan who had a very quiet game by his own high standards was replaced by the slightly quicker Chris Gribben who immediately scored two well taken goals. Kieran Rice added a further goal but shortly afterwards had to go off injured. As all the subs had been used, it was decided that Paddy Finnegan would go back on again-this was reminiscent of the All-ireland final in which Paddy’s hero, Peter ‘God’ Canavan came back on after been substituted to have a major influence on the game. Unfortunately, this is where all comparisons must end as Paddy failed to add to his tally of 1-1. Bredagh added a couple of further points with Carryduff replying with several points as the game drifted to it’s inevitable conclusion. Man of the match had to be Mark Robinson with a special mention for Conor O’Keefe who after 25 years of senior football for Bredagh finally figured out how to kick the ball straight.

Bright 2-7 Bredagh 5-9 Bredagh Reserves travelled to Bright on Monday night. Although the temperature had cooled slightly by throw-in, it was still very warm, and playing on a pitch that contained more stones than grass made conditions difficult. The squad was also missing several regular team members so this meant there was potential for an upset.
The first 15 minutes was a scrappy affair, with neither team getting into any flowing football. The first score came when the ever-aware Matthew Hollywood took full advantage of a mix up between Bright’s keeper and fullback, pouncing to tap the ball into the net. Unfortunately soon after the goal Matthew collided with a Bright man and fell awkwardly on the rock solid pitch. This was the end of the game for Matthew and he had to be substituted.
Bredagh continued to attack and Connor O’Keefe burst threw the Bright defence from half-forward to score a well taken point. Bredagh continued to dominate with Charlie Pat busting the net and the ever reliable Paddy Finnegan stepping up to coolly slot away a penalty. No sooner had Paddy converted Bredagh’s penalty than Bright were awarded a dubious one at the other end. But Bredagh’s luck was in and Bredagh keeper Sean ‘not Shaun!’ Armstrong produced a finger tip save pushing the ball onto the bar which was then well won by Johnny Kelly and taken away from danger.
Bredagh’s mid-field and defence battled hard snubbing out any Bright attack leaving the half-time score: Bright 0-1 Bredagh 3-3.
Bredagh set out in the 2nd half with the intention of concentrating on scoring more points but Charlie Pat just could not stop bursting the net and put another 2 goals past Bright’s keeper. John McKenna, who scored 2 points, and Oisin Quinn had been winning the majority of the breaking ball off the midfield and had run themselves into the ground. They were substituted to be rested for the Minor’s match on Wednesday. Bredagh seemed to take the foot off the pedal a bit towards the end with Bright scoring 2 goals and putting a few points over. However, any chance of a comeback was short-lived as Connor McDaid, set up by Kieran Rice, pointed and then Chris Savage finally scored his 1st point for Bredagh after shaking off a high tackle (that’s my story and I’m sticking to it)! This was nearly followed up with Chris’ 1st ever goal after Stevie Gray stormed forward providing the pass, but the snap shot pinged the bar and went over for a point.
This was a good victory for Bredagh with many great performances in defence, but man of the match must go to Johnny Kelly who was outstanding in right half back. This result keeps Bredagh undefeated and top of the EDRFL.
Team: S. Armstrong, E. Donnelly, N. Colton, J. Kelly, R. O’ Donnell, K. Rice, B. O’ Connell, S. Gray, J. McKenna (0-2), C. P. McCartan (3-1), C. O’Keefe (0-2), O. Quinn, M. Hollywood (1-0), P. Finnegan (1-1).
Subs: Cathair, C. McDaid (0-1), C. Savage (0-2).
Bredagh 4:9 Teconnaght 1:4 Bredagh controlled this game from start to finish at Cherryvale on Sunday night in near perfect weather conditions and never looked in any real danger of getting anything other than 2 league points. Teconnaght travelled with no substitutes whereas Bredagh had a panel of 25 men to choose from, which manager Dermot MacGreevey used to his advantage.
Bredagh started well, with points from Conor O'Keefe, Charlie-Pat McCartan and an excellently taken point from the evergreen Michael Tunney from what looked like an impossible angle. McCartan then added a goal, which although not as spectacular as his goal against Kilcoo last week, settled any nerves that the Bredagh players, managers and supporters may have had. Another Bredagh attack saw O'Keefe through on goal but he fired wide - Kevin Briggs had great delight in reminding O'Keefe of this miss in the changing rooms after the game as it seemed to him like it would have been easier to score.
A few strong hits were put in by both teams in the first half, with Conall Donnelly never far away from any action. An accidental collision with a Teconnaght player resulted in the player eventually being substituted for a manager/mentor from the club.
Bredagh were aware that the seniors had a similar early lead on Friday night against Ardglass but this time the reserves dug deep and added a few more scores from Niall Devlin, McCartan and Tunney. The Bredagh defence didn't allow a single score in the first half. Any Teconnaght chances were smothered out with Paul McEvoy and midfielder Brendan O'Connell both taking high catches in the square and Paddy Cassidy providing a running outlet for them.
The second half saw all 5 substitutions being used and both teams realised there would be only one winner. Some guy with an American accent got 2 early second-half goals, before John McKenna scored a well-taken goal, Oisin Quinn added a point to reward his tireless running and O'Keefe added another good point. Teconnaght finally managed to score in the second half with a few good long range points and a goal that seemed to deceive everyone in the Bredagh defence.
Overall, this was another impressive performance from the Reserve side. Shaun Armstrong had another excellent performance in nets and got great range on his kickouts. The full-back line of McEvoy, Cassidy and Colton dealt with everything the Teconnaght forwards had to offer. Young McEvoy had a good game and is surely one for the future. Halfbacks Conall Donnelly, Eunan Donnelly and Niall Devlin had a strong game and started plenty of attcks. Stephen Gray and Brendan O'Connell won everything that came their way in the first half before Gray was replaced by young Kevin Briggs. The half-forwards caused the Teconnaght defence the most problems with Oisin Quinn using his height to his advantage and beating his man to the ball every time and turning him inside out. John McKenna had another great performance, adding to his tally for the season with a well-taken goal. Centre-half McCartan won anything that the midfield pairing didn't and used his experience to take scores and set up other chances. The full-forward line, with a combined age higher than the other 12 men on the field, won their battles and took some great scores. The substitutes all made their contributions to the game. The team was boosted by the second-half return of injured pair Kevin Briggs and Captain Barry Houston, with both players showing that they seem to have recovered well from their injuries, especially the horrific triple nail-break that ruled Houston out of previous games.
Bredagh Team: Shaun Armstrong; Paul McEvoy, Paddy Cassidy, Niall Colton; Niall Devlin (0-1), Eunan Donnelly, Conall Donnelly; Brendan O'Connell, Stephen Gray; John McKenna (1-1), Charlie-Pat McCartan (1-2), Oisin Quinn (0-1); Paddy Finnegan, Conor O'Keefe (0-2), Michael Tunney (0-2).
Substitutes: Conor McDaid (2-0) for Finnegan, Kevin Briggs for Gray, Barry Houston for C.Donnelly, Kieran Rice for O'Keefe, Chris Savage for Tunney
Bredagh 4-12 - Kilcoo 2-4 The senior reserve team travelled to Kilcoo for a tough assignment on Sunday evening, hoping to continue their unbeaten run. Manager Dermot McGreevey had a large squad to pick from, although inspirational captain Barry Houston was unavailable due to a broken nail.
Bredagh controlled the first half, the Kilcoo defence struggling with the aerial threat of Holywood, blistering pace of Finnegan and non-stop work ethic of Kieran Rice. All three were ably supplied by the half forward line. John McKenna again put in a flawless performance, winning vital ball, setting up scores and taking a few himself.
Charlie Pat McCartan put in a man of the match performance, taking some brilliant points from long range, scoring a great goal, and also solving the teams free-taking problem. Beforehand Paddy Finnegan had reluctantly taken on the role but was struggling, and seemed only too happy to hand over the reins.
Conor O'keefe belied his 43 years to contribute his usual two points.
The midfield duo of Robinson and Gray completely dominated the game in what was a very physical battle. Their high fielding and running at the defence provided the base for most bredagh attacks, and thwarted many Kilcoo counter attacks.
In defence, Brian Rice marshalled his half back line well, winning every ball that came his way, as did the other half backs Eunan Donnelly and Niall Devlin. Both went about their jobs in the usual manner, quietly and efficiently denying their men the space necessary to shoot.
The full back line also performed admirably. Paddy Cassidy stuck well to his man, pushing him out to the corner of the field on the few occasions he managed to win the ball, making it impossible to score. Shane Donnelly was very unlucky not to win man of the match, and may well have done had he not to retire injured just after half time. He didn't give his man an inch, took some heavy hits and even stuck over a point off his left boot. Not bad for a corner back!
Not to be outdone, Paul MacEvoy was all over his man, possibly abit too much as he left the field with what looked strangely like a lovebite on his wrist!Shaun Armstrong showed his class with well placed kickouts, some reaching his own half forward line, and some fine saves.
This was a good win on the road for the team, putting up a good scoreline against what would be one of the toughest sides in the league. It was also a hard hitting game, something the manager briefly alluded to in his teamtalk.
However all the boys stood up well and took their hits without a word of complaint.

Bredagh 2-11 Darragh Cross 0-3 Bredagh played Darragh Cross in East Down Reserve League on Saturday and depsite fielding without the injured Sean Armstrong, captain Barry Heuston and Rory O'Donnell they registered an impressive win.
A special mention must go to minor hurler Eoin Donnelly, who ably filled the boots of keeper Armstrong and dealt comfortably with any balls that came his way.
The Bredagh defence were put under immediate pressure in the opening minutes of this game with Darragh Cross starting strongly. Some stout defending and poor Darragh shooting eventually seen Bredagh take control, but this period was to prove costly as the Ormeau men lost centre back Heaney to an chin injury which required stiches.
Old stager Paul McEvoy entered the defensive fray as Bredagh's midfield began to get on top with Mark Robinson and Brendan O'Connell winning plenty of primary possession and the wing backs getting forward to good effect.
Bredagh's first goal came courtesy of good defensive work as Bredagh turned over a Darragh attack. Slick passing from Brendan O'Connell and Matthew Hollywood found Charie Pat McCartan who scored from close range. Bredagh followed up with another goal from Hollywood who beat two men before driving the ball home from 14 yards.
Bredagh led by eight points at the break through points from Finnegan, McKenna and O'Connell, although it could well have been more had they converted all their chances.
Half-time
Bredagh 2-4 Darragh Cross 0-2
In the second half Bredagh started sharply following harsh words from manager Dermot McGreevy. Michael Tunney made an immediate impact with a point from play with further points added by Hollywood and O'Keefe.
Kieran Rice, who was introduced for the injured Niall Devlin, made a good case for a starting place against Kilcoo in the next round with two good points from play which capped off an excellent second-half performance.

Bredagh 2-12 Ardglass 0-5 Bredagh Reserves hadn't beaten Ardglass for a number of years in the EDRFL but the lads turned in a good performance to take the points at a rainswept Cherryvale.
Ardglass started strongly and threatened the Bredagh goal on a number of ocassions only to be thwarted by brave defending from full backs Barry Heuston and Paddy Cassidy.
As the game progressed, Ardglass' scoring opportunities began to dry up with Bredagh getting on top in midfield, with Centre Back Paddy Heaney pushing up to good effect.
Up front Johnny Cleary, Conor O'Keefe and Paddy Finnegan proved a constant threat to the seasiders, winning ball and converting scores. O'Keefe and Cleary both scored cracking second half goals to put the result beyond doubt and the Ormeau Road men ran out 13 point winners.

Bredagh 3-10 St Pauls 2-9 Challenge Match Sunday 13th May 2007
Reserve manager Dermot MacGreevy expressed disappointment with the turnout for this friendly match. He said, “we have had a selection of 24 and 25 players for the last 2 matches but today we suffered the embarrassment of having to borrow 4 St Paul’s player to make up a 15. Some good came out of this however, as 3 untested minors volunteered at short notice to help out and their performances will place pressure on those who consider themselves worthy of a place on the team.
17 year old Dermot Colton, Conor MacGreevy and Mark McElroy had great performances. Dermot Colton at LCB didn’t put a foot wrong all day. Conor, despite not having played since he was 12, worked hard and got himself a fancy goal. Mark manfully accepted the responsibility of full back and showed maturity and control well beyond his years. Three to look out for in the future.
Given that Bredagh had to borrow 4 players the game itself lost any real meaning. Nonetheless, the Bredagh team displayed better understanding of the Gaelic game than their St Paul’s counterparts. Playing against a stiff breeze in the first half they returned a tally of 3:12 to 1:6.
As often happens when playing with a supporting wind, Bredagh found it difficult to convert scores early in the 2nd half but this was remedied later by some good interchange play and good finishing. A sporting and entertaining challenge match ended on a score line of St Paul’s 2:9 (15), Bredagh 3:10 (19).

Castlewellan 1-10 Bredagh 2-07 Bredagh reserves came away from Castlewellan with a hard earned point after an entertaining encounter on Sunday night. But for some questionable refereeing decisions, Bredagh should arguably have come away with the full two points, but at this stage of the season and against such tough opponents, the men in maroon will arguably be satisfied with a share of the spoils.
The game commenced at a fast pace, and early on, it looked like the Town were threatening to race away from the Belfast men, with Castlewellan’s forward line looking very sharp on the way to earning a 4 points to 1 lead. Indeed it could have been worse for Bredagh had Sean Armstrong not pulled off a superb save from point blank range to deny the Town an early goal. Bredagh soon settled to their task however, and a tremendous punched goal from Ciaran Rice brought Bredagh right back into the game. The entry of veteran Paul McEvoy helped steady the defence, as Bredagh began to dominate proceedings. Bredagh hit the front with an excellent goal from Paddy Finnegan, punching a long ball to the net with his back to goal, surely a candidate at the end of the year for goal of the season. The introduction before half time of Jonny Cleary boosted the visitor’s attack, and a well-struck 45 from Cleary helped Bredagh to a 2 point lead at the half time interval.
With the advantage of the infamous Town slope for the second half, Castlewellan started the second half strongly, picking up 2 scores to level the match. Bredagh had to dig in at this stage to prevent the game slipping from their grasp, but the Town’s midfield had taken control, and Bredagh were finding possession hard to come by. Nevertheless, Bredagh looked dangerous on the counter, and scores by the evergreen Conor O’Keefe, and Matthew Hollywood helped maintain Bredagh’s advantage.
Disaster struck however when Castlewellan grabbed a controversial goal, with Brendan O’Connell appearing to be clearly fouled in the build up to the goal, but Ardglass’ Mickey Curran remained unmoved by the mass Bredagh protests. Castlewellan then followed up their goal with a point to move 2 points clear. At this point Bredagh needed inspiration and it came from the unlikely source of Captain Marvel, Barry Houston, striding forward with purpose from centre half back to somehow slice over a score. Inspired by this, Jonny Cleary soon added a point of his own to level matters again. In an exciting finale, both teams had chances to win the game, but the scores remained level at full time, and the teams were forced to share a point apiece.
Bredagh will take a lot of positives out of this encounter. Sean Armstrong continues to impress between the sticks, while Paddy Cassidy, Paul McEvoy and Eunan Donnelly dominated their men after a shaky start. Wing backs John McKenna and Niall Devlin both produced industrious displays, while Mark Robinson and Brendan O’Connell won their fair share of ball at midfield. The half forward line answered manager Dermot MacGreevy’s call and worked their socks off for the 60 mins, while in the full forward line, the terrible twins of Finnegan and O’Keefe again showed that they still have plenty to offer, alongside another encouraging display from minor Matthew Hollywood.

Bredagh 5-10 St Johns 0-6
Sunday 22nd April 2007
Bredagh continued their good start to the EDRL by beating St John’s at Cherryvale last Sunday. Although the final score line indicates an easy win it everything but that up to half time.
Mathew Hollywood was outstanding in full forward as he was able to score and off load the ball many times for others to get scores. In the first half the forwards moved well as unit with some fine play from the half back line through to the forwards resulting in scores. Indeed senior manager Paddy Heaney making is debut for this years campaign play in plenty of good high balls into the forward line as well as some diagonal passes to the young corner forwards of O’Keefe and Finnegan.
Once again Shaun Armstrong’s kick outs were brilliant and with Barry “Hitman” Houston, Paddy Cassidy and Brian McKenna along the full back line nobody was getting through easily. Along the half back line the fore mention Heaney was joined by two flyers and tenacious tacklers Naill Devlin and Eunan Donnelly this line in particular play great ball into the forwards.
The now long established midfield partnership of Stephen Gray and Brendan O’Connell with O’Connell providing the guile and Gray the power fought well at midfield as they were against some fine young senior players from St Johns.
The first goal was a fine individual effort by Mathew Hollywood after a fine pass from Brendan O’Connell at midfield he rounded his marker and fired a looping shot over the keeper from 20 yards. Further scores from Hollywood, Paddy Finnegan and Paul Boyd left the score line at half time Bredagh 1-4 St Johns 0-3 so very little in it at that stage.
Compliments to the defensive unit for keeping that score line down but if St Johns had off taken the 5 frees they missed the score line would have been closer at the break.
In the second half Bredagh came out like a team possessed and after just two minutes Hollywood with a fine solo dummy (Enda Gormley like) against the full back finished with aplong into the back of the net, then scores from Stephen Grey and Hollywood moved Bredagh into a 6 point lead. At this stage are young and fast half forward line kicked into gear and with Jonny Kelly, Paul Boyd and John McKenna the future look bright for a Bredagh win. And that was confirmed 15mins into the half when a fine pass from Connor O’Keefe to his long term forward partner Paddy Finnegan who calmly slide the ball pass the keeper low into the back of the net.
Connor O’Keefe followed that up a minute later with a fine 40 yard score following good work from the midfield. Oisin Quinn who was brought on during the second half also contributed a point and also a fine goal after a great move between three of the eight minors on the squad. The final goal was started by a long diagonal pass from combine codes star Ian Galway to the on running Finnegan who controlled the ball with the left hand and then with a def touch with the right fist placed pass the on rushing keeper into the bottom left with that it was the final nail in the coffin for St Johns.
Kieran Rice coming on for Stephen Gray made a good impact following a year out of the game as he travelled the world. Naill Colton another minor game on for Jonny Kelly at Half back and added a lot more speed to the attack as the St Johns fittest levels were drained. It was also good to see Rowan Smart back as he had an outstanding debut season last year.
Bredagh fitness levels were excellent throughout the game and must be kept to that high standard for the rest of the campaign.
Thanks must be given to our large group of supporters from all codes of the club and good to see some of the senior forwards there to see how it is done.
Dermot MacGreevy team manager was happy with the overall performance and thank all the players including those who did not get on, but we need everyone we have in order to give the EDRFL a go.

Bredagh 3-12, Dundrum 0-9 Bredagh 3-12, Dundrum 0-9
Bredagh Reserves got their EDRFL 2007 campaign off to a good start with an away victory over Dundrum on Sunday. The team was something of an unknown quantity with several new faces coupled with minors from last/this year in the squad. Disappointing results against Ardoyne and Dromara in pre-season matches had perhaps dented the confidence of some of the players however this result will go some way in restoring belief in the side.
The squad was complemented by a dozen or so supporters who made the journey down and their support was appreciated, especially that of Scrappy – his morale support was welcomed by everyone and he duly carried the water with his good arm, what a clubmate!
Conditions were good and the first half produced some periods of good football from both sides. The Bredagh forward line (Matthew Hollywood, Paul Boyd and the evergreen Paddy Finnegan) had plenty of quality ball delivered from the midfield and half forward lines which led to the scoring of 2-8 between them overall. Conor O’Keefe also chipped in with a score in the 20th minute. Dundrum kept in touch with some good play of their own particularly from the corner forward who scored several points both from free’s and play.
The defence as a unit played well keeping things tight and not giving away too many free’s although Brian McKenna was booked in the first half for a trip on their no. 11 – he felt hard done by in getting a yellow card as he didn’t mean it (dead on Brian). The midfield also played well with Stephen Gray and Brendan O’Connell making notable contributions in both halves. Dundrum were still in the game at the end of the first half with only 3 pts in Bredaghs favour separating the sides.
Half-time: Bredagh 2-3, Dundrum 0-6
In the second half Bredagh got a couple of early scores which seemed to settle the side down and started to get on top in the midfield. Dundrum tried to changes things by introducing a sweeper in front of Matthew Hollywood but this tactic didn’t prevent Bredagh from putting more scores on the board. This can be attributed to the movement of the forwards in creating space not to mention the tackling and harassing of the opposition when not in possession.
The midfield, aided by good kick outs from Shaun Armstrong, were winning all sorts of ball and possession with Rory “dummies” McDonnell, Conall and Eunan Donnelly (no relation) shoring up from half back. Ian Galway, donning the No.8 jersey (warmed by Michael Lee) was introduced, showing well for the ball and involved in several of the scores as well as picking up 2 pts himself. Liam McGarry (numberless), Niall Devlin (1-0) and Rowan Smart (0-1) were also introduced in the second half and all produced good displays.
A late rally from Dundrum saw them put 2 pts on the board but by that stage the damage had been done and Bredagh ran out worthy of their victory.
This victory bodes well for the future however there are plenty more matches to go. A concerted effort by everyone this year will be needed to see us in the shake up at the end of the season.
Well done to everyone involved and the next match is scheduled for Sunday 22nd April, 7pm at Cherryvale.

2006 Season
Bredagh 1-11 Drumaness 1-6 30th July 2006 Bredagh got the show back on the road at Cherryvale with a comphrehensive win over Drumaness. Although the score line suggests a close game Bredagh made hard work of the win.
Bredagh produced glimpses of the football they can play in the first twenty minutes of the game resulting in some fine scores. The opening score came from Conor O’Keefe winning the ball in midfield off-loading to Shane Donnelly and he hand passed to an on running Niall Devlin who coolly slotted over from 25 metres. The second point also game from a quick ball into Paddy Finnegan who turned onto his trusty right from 30metres to put Bredagh ahead by two after only 2minutes. Then the goal fiasco started with Bredagh creating numerous chances but only to see two hit the crossbar, one get stuck in the swimming pool in the goal mouth before Conall Donnelly rounded his man out on the right and ran in from 25 metres to coolly beat the keeper at the near post.
Drumaness then pulled back two scores and a lucky goal coming from a speculative shot with was scrambled past Pup in goals who for his trouble got covered from head to toe in muck. But Bredagh hit back right away with a well worked move started by Brian “ The Wall” McKenna who was superb through out the game at Corner Back. Brain passed off to Rowan Smart, who kicked onto Shane Donnelly and he as usual hit a great kick pass to Paddy Finnegan, who then gave a hand pass to Rowan who never stopped running throughout the game and he after tackling himself, juggle the ball over his head backed to himself slotted over from 20metres a great score.
Again at midfield Paddy Cassidy starred again and with another veteran beside him Conor O’Keefe ran the show. Indeed the halfback, midfield and half forward line played some great football in the first half moving the ball up the field with one great move started by Rory O’Donnell, Conor O’Keefe and then Liam McGarry laying off to an on running Niall Boyle who pointed from 15metres.
Throughout the first half there was a tremendous amount of good movement and passing by Bredagh with Michael Tunny nearly involved in all Bredagh scores. Obviously Michael’s trip to Germany gave him time to put in some extra training.
But at half time Bredagh only lead by two points: Bredagh 1-5 Drumaness 1-3
The second half was a start stop game from a Bredagh perspective as we started well with a great early ball from Conor O’Keefe into Paddy Finnegan and he pointed with the left. Another early ball into Michael Tunny resulted in another score. From that point Bredagh lost their way slightly with Drumaness winning more breaking ball in the midfield area. They ran at the Bredagh defence who tackled well but in areas close to the goals some of the tackling was poor. With the combination of this and some bizarre decisions by the referee favouring the away team Drumaness scored three points without reply. But the last ten belonged to Bredagh who fought hard in all areas and never allowed Drumaness to build up any moves from defence. Liam McGarry again had another good run out and topped it off with a fine point 10 minutes from time. Scores followed from the forward line, which put Bredagh out of sight. The back line for Bredagh again held firm as Drumaness pushed for a second goal to give them some respectability to the score line but a great save from Pup meant they only scored a solitary point. Barry Houston, Tim Shannon and Brain McKenna again held firm in the full back line throughout the game.
Bredagh are up against Liatroim next week must beat them as they are hot favourites to win the league.

Saul 2-11 Bredagh 2-8 23rd July 2006
Bredagh fell to their second defeat of the season after a hard fought game away to Saul. Bredagh started well and were 1-2 to no score up by the 15th minute thanks to points from Paddy Finnegan and a long range wonder score from “2 goals Lee” or M Michael Lee for the passer bye. The goal came from a high ball into the square, which was broken down by Stephen Gray to Paddy Cassidy who buried it. Bredagh throughout the first half played some neat and composed football and indeed Paddy Cassidy was exceptional at midfield fighting for every ball alongside Paul McAvoy, and with Shane Donnelly winning a lot of breaking ball was won. From the resulting free Bredagh’s second goal game from a high ball into the square which Stephen Gray caught and shot in one action, the shot game off the post and Niall Devlin pounced to score. However some sloppy played allowed Saul back into the game nearing the end of the half by netting a soft goal, which was not deserved.
Half Time Score Saul 1-2 Bredagh 2-3
The second half didn’t start well for Bredagh as we conceded two quick scores from a Saul team who were fielding a number of seniors, obviously targeting this game to get their season back on track. And 10 minutes into the half Saul got their second goal to go ahead for the first time in the game. Following the opening 15 minutes the remainder of the game was a ding-dong affair with scores being traded up to the very end with only one point between them with 5 to go. Then the referee came into play with some one-sided decisions against Bredagh’s defence who were superb throughout with Rowan Smart the youngest man on the field playing out of his skin. Saul knocked over two easy won frees to win the game by 3 points. Throughout the game the Bredagh heads never went down and fought throughout with some pride. Scores in the second half game from two frees from Paul McAvoy, two frees from Paddy Finnegan and a point from play from Raymond Gormley. Liam McGarry came on the second half for Niall Devlin and tackled like a tiger alongside Conall “Elbows Donnelly” who also was tenacious in tackling and was unlucky on a couple of occasions not to have won a free or get sent off.
This match also saw the introduction more minor players. Stephen Gray, Johne McKenna and Donal Murphy Alongside now regular minors Pup, Niall Boyle, Niall Devlin and Rowan Smart and with these guys we will win the East Down next year.
The management was very pleased with the way the team played and fought throughout the game and on other occasions Bredagh would have won out.
Credit must go to the guys who played earlier and also on Friday night that ran themselves to the ground as other players didn’t even show up or let the management know their availability.
Bredagh – Jonathan Arthurs (Pup), Chris Savage, Brian McKenna, Rowan Smart, Conall Donnelly, Rory O’Donnell, Naill Boyle, Paddy Cassidy (1-1), Paul McAvoy (0-2), Niall Devlin (1-0), Raymond Gormley (0-1),. Bredagh 1-14 Kilcoo 0-7 Bredagh went into this game with home advantage after holding Kilcoo to a draw at their pitch. The locals started strongly with good early scores from Finnegan, O’Keefe and Cleary who came in to replace the gallivanting Michael Tunney. By half time all six forwards had scored and Bredagh were leading 7 points to 2. Kilcoo fought back in the second half and tested the Bredagh defence with a blitz of points. Bredagh regained control however following some shrewd switches from tactical maestros Scullion and O’Reilly.
Kevin Bradley won plenty of ball when moved to the middle with Brendan O’Connell using possession to good effect following his switch to half forward. Substitutes Coyle and Donnelly combined to score a goal which put the city boys 8 points ahead and Cleary closed out the game with a brace of frees.
All in all a good win for the Reserves who are now unbeaten since their Terry Lawlor Cup defeat to Carryduff in February. Those who turned out to watch the home side will be happy with what they saw.

Carryduff 0-2 Bredagh 2-6 Without playing particularly well Bredagh won their fourth consecutive EDRFL match in a keenly contested game against local rivals Carryduff. Played in front of a large crowd, the game started poorly with both teams guilty of a number of handling errors and of giving away possession cheaply. Bredagh had the advantage of a strong breeze in the first half but didn’t take full advantage with the ball being overplayed in the middle of the field and not being released in time to the forwards who were guilty of some poor shooting. After a number of wides by both teams Conal O’Neill slotted over the first point of the game for Bredagh which was equalised by a pointed free for Carryduff. Neither team scored again until 20 minutes into the half when Bredagh hit a 5 minute purple patch with points from play by Conor O’Keefe and Kevin Harte and an excellent long range free from Paddy Finnegan. Bredagh should have further extended their lead but Henry Deazley hit a tame shot straight at the keeper when put through just before half-time. There were no further scores in the first half leaving Bredagh with a slender lead at half-time and the prospect of playing into a strong breeze in the second half.
Manager Paul O’Reilly was not a happy man at half-time and emphasised in no uncertain terms to the team, the importance of both playing better in the second half and of winning against our local rivals. With the aid of the strong wind, Carryduff started the 2nd half more brightly but a serious of attacks were broken up the Bredagh defence which was well marshalled by full-back John O’Connor aided in particular by Niall Boyle who made a couple of vital interceptions. Ten minutes into the second half Carryduff reduced the margin to two points with a pointed free. Bredagh responded quickly and following excellent play by Henry Deazley, Michael Tunney fisted Bredagh’s first point of the second half. This was followed a few minutes later by a goal for Bredagh taken well by Michael Tunney following a defence splitting pass by substitute Raymond Gormley. The Carryduff support was further silenced five minutes later when Henry Deazley made up for his miss in the first half by driving an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net for Bredagh’s 2nd goal. This score effectively ended the game with Bredagh increasing their lead further through a point from play by Michael Tunney. Carryduff failed to score again with Bredagh winning by a comfortable 10 point margin.

Bredagh 6-13 - 1-4 Teconnaught In their 3rd EDRFL game of the season Bredagh reserves had an easy victory over Teconnaught in a one-sided match played at a wet and windy Cherryvale. Having won the toss, captain Conor O’Keefe opted to play with the aid of the strong breeze in the first half and his decision proved a correct one. Powered by veteran midfielder Paul McEvoy who rumour has it is soon eligible to play for the Down or Fermanagh over 40’s and Kevin Harte, Bredagh went to an early lead with points from Conal O Neill, Conor O Keefe and Paddy Finnegan which was followed by a well taken goal by Michael Tunney. Teconnaught replied with a couple of points but failed to score again in the first half. Bredagh added further points from Conall Donnelly, Michael Tunney and full back Barry Houston before they scored a further goal through Conor O’Keefe who fisted bravely to the net despite colliding with the goalkeeper. A further well taken goal by Conall Donnelly and a number of points left Bredagh with a commanding half-time lead of 3-10 to 0-2. The expected fightback from Teconnaught did not materialise in the second half with bredagh scoring for further points and further goals through Kevin Harte and substitutes Raymond Gormey and Conor Rafferty. Bredagh are now joint top of the EDRFL with Leitrim with a crunch local derby with neighbours carryduff their next fixture.

Bredagh 3-10 - 2-6 Bright In their 2nd EDRFL game of the season Bredagh reserves had a straightforward victory over Bright. Indeed the scoreline should have been more convincing but a number of poor wides and excellent saves by the Bright keeper reduced the margin of victory.
Bredagh started well and took an early lead with points from Paddy Finnegan and Jamie Cleary. They also missed a great chance for a goal when Shane Donnelly missed from about two yards with his favoured left foot! However, at this stage of the game they were guilty of overplaying the ball around the middle of the field and as a result of giving possession way, Bright in a rare break up the field scored a well taken goal. Bright gained in confidence from this score and followed it up with two further points. A point from Michael Tunney and a well taken goal from Jamie Cleary steadied nerves. Further points from Cleary and a well taken long range point from midfielder Conor O’Keefe followed and the lead was further extended with another well taken goal by Cleary. Bright responded with two points from play but a catalogue of missed chances meant that at half time Bredagh did not have the lead that their domination of the first half deserved.
Bredagh started the 2nd half well with points from Paddy Finnegan, Michael Tunney and Jamie Cleary. However, they allowed Bright back into the game and following a couple of points and a goal for Bright the margin was reduced to only two points with 10 minutes to go. Bredagh responded well and following good work by Rowan Smart who had been switched to the forward line in the 2nd half, Paddy Finnegan punched the ball into the empty net from a couple of yards out. A further point by Jamie Cleary made the game safe for Bredagh who remain unbeaten in the EDRFL.

Kilcoo 0-7 0-7 Bredagh In their 2nd outing of the season Bredagh reserves earned a well deserved draw away to Kilcoo in the first round of the reserve championship. This match was typical championship football epitomised by plenty of hard tackling by both sides which resulted in a lack of space and shooting opportunities for the forwards on both teams.
Bredagh started the match quite slowly with Kilcoo taking an early two point lead. However, the Bredagh midfield gradually began to take control and the foraging runs of Henry Deazley were instrumental in driving the team forward. Bredagh drew level following a pointed free by Paddy Finnegan and a point from play by Michael Tunney. Kilcoo regained the lead with another free which was cancelled out by another Paddy Finnegan free.
Half-time Kilcoo 0-3 0-3 Bredagh
Bredagh started the 2nd half slowly and conceded another pointed free. However, the Bredagh midfield then took control and ably assisted by Kevin Bradley who started attacking from his centre back position, they began to outplay Kilcoo. This period of dominance resulted in excellent points from midfielders Henry Deazley and John O’ Connor. Indeed, Bredagh had a chance to further extend their lead when Paddy Finnegan was put through on goal but the keeper pulled off an excellent save. Further points were exchanged between the teams with Kilcoo drawing level with a couple of minutes to go. Bredagh thought they had done enough to win the match when Ian Galwey pointed an excellent 45 and veteran goalkeeper Ciaran O’Keefe rolled back the years and pulled off two excellent point blank saves. However, despite some tenacious defending by the full back line Kilcoo drew level with a point from play with virtually the last kick of the game. A draw was probably a fair result for both teams and Bredagh will hope that home advantage in the replay will ensure that they proceed to the next round of the championship.

Bredagh 3-10 - 1-6 Castlewellan Bredagh reserves had a good win on Sunday in the first round of the 2006 EDRFL against a depleted Castlewellan outfit. Manager Mark Scullion will be particularly happy with the result considering he was without the services of Steven Hand and Brian McKenna, both of whom are injured, and regulars Conall Donnelly and James McKenna who started on the bench due to injury. However, several minors made the step-up and Scullion will certainly have been impressed with the application of Rowan Smart at corner back.
The home team started shakily however and took almost 10 minutes to get off the blocks with Castlewellan scoring two early points. Bredagh then began to win and retain possession in the middle with Shane Donnelly roving out from corner forward to play a third mid-fielder role and John O’Connor and Conor O’Keefe using their strength to good effect.
Bredagh profited immediately from this switch with Paddy Finnegan palming the ball to the net after Conall O’Neill found him in space with a speculative ball. After that Bredagh never looked back. Conor Rafferty worked tirelessly on the wing, winning good possession, and tackling hard and Tunney and Galwey followed up with points before O’Neill scored an excellent goal of his own.
Half-time
Bredagh 2-5 – 0-3 Castlewellan
In the second half Bredagh continued their good work with an assured defence of Rory McDonnell and Rowan Smart snuffing out any Castlewellan attacks. Conor McDaid, playing in goals, was excellent under the high ball and wing men Tim Shannon and Niall Boyle distributed some excellent passes into the on-form forwards.
Shane Donnelly chipped in with a point from play and Ian Galway landed an excellent long range free to stretch Bredagh’s lead. Castlewellan never gave up though and continued to press. They converted two free kicks and a dubious penalty before Bredagh put together the move of the day, starting in the full back line and culminating in a goal from Conall Donnelly which capped off an excellent team performance.

Subs: Micheal Lee for Conall O’Neill, Conall Donnelly (1-0) for Shane Donnelly, James McKenna for Rowan Smart.
Next Sunday the Reserves take on Dundrum in the second round of the league and Paul O’Reilly will be buying ice cream for everyone after the game.
