Competition Preview
Yes folks, it’s that time of the year again. Armagh and Tyrone have set off on their annual pilgrimage to Croke Park, Donegal have started the barbeque season and Kerry are preserving Colm Cooper in tubs of Oil of Ulay in readiness for the start of their Championship in September.

Closer to home, tensions are rising on the Ormeau Road.

Bredagh men and women can be seen in quiet huddles in the local hostelries planning their assault on this years Bredagh Mencap Charity Sevens. Already the road is rife with rumours of early morning training sessions hosted by Marty Hannity for the coaches (turnouts have been poor), Bredagh’s Australian division are planning a comeback – Mark Robinson has this year requested to be on the same side as Ciaran Kelly. Kevin Muldoon, weighing in at a respectable 14 st 6 lbs will be togging out for the ex players. John Gilmore will make his long awaited return to competitive action following a full pre-season with the senior squad.

This year’s event takes place at Gibson Park, the home of Malone Rugby Club Saturday 24th June. A wonderful facility with 3 pitches and club house (yes the bar will be open all day), it will also host the club’s summer social on the same evening.

The competition will be played in 3 stages.
Stage 1Qualifier stage with 3 groups, 3 teams each.
Stage 2Top 2 teams from each group qualify for the cup play offs (also played on league basis – 2 groups) with the 3rd placed team from each group placed in a 3 team group to playoff for the plate / wooden spoon.
Final1st placed team in each cup play off group will meet in the final at 6.30 on Malone’s main pitch beside the club house. The Plate will be decided based on table placing with score difference and yellow cards to determine finishing positions in the event of a tie. See full summary of rules in advance.

TEAM PREVIEW

The Coaches
Winners of the competition 2 years ago, they will be keen to maintain their strong presence in the competition. The coaches are expected to be strong at the back with Kelly and Doyle both to star. Much will be expected from the legs of McKenna (fitter than most of his players) and ladies coaches O’Connell and Short. Up front they depend heavily on the ever green Donal Durkan who should again rattle the net on a regular basis. Eugene Irwin will also be sporting a new improved tan.

The Minors

Going well in the league, the minors will present a serious challenge with second place in the group qualifiers expected. Calling on a pool of quality players including Arthurs, Costello, Briggs and Holywood, they also have players with senior and reserve experience in Devlin, Boyle and Smart.

The Ex Players

Somewhat of an unknown quantity…. to everyone including themselves. In the past, Cafferty, Gilmore, White and Smiley have starred. They can also call upon Pete Carr, Daragh Mallon, Brian Hegarty, Eamon Tunney, Shane Donnelly, Frankie Devlin and Dublin based Bryan Rice. CJ Carson may be tempted top make his annual appearance. Potential competition winners who are equally as likely to take the wooden spoon. Shorts sizes start at 38.

The Committee

Following some strategic voting at this years AGM, the committee managed to include senior players Paul Bradley, Paddy Finnegan and Conall Donnelly in their ranks. Joined by Jerome Quinn, Paul Blaney and Gerry Conlon, this team may struggle to field – the judges will be watching very closely for ringers. Who does Paul Doran play for?

Malone RFC

A completely unknown quantity. The Cregagh Road boys have been secretly coached on the basics of the game and are in great shape after a successful season, maintaining their All-Ireland Division 2 status and reaching the Ravenhill Ulster decider. Expected to field 4-5 GAA players, Malone will push the Committee hard for second place in the qualifiers.

Hurlers

The Hurlers have the potential to cause an upset along the way in this competition. With Ian Galway and Cork native Mick Burke included in their ranks along with Peadar Heffron and Doolers, they should be able to handle the ball without the help of a stick (for the purposes of ball control or leg support). Danny Hughes will be excepted to dominate in and around the middle of the park with Lorenzo McMullan, winner with the Coaches in 2004 to chip in a number of scores again this year. Referee Eamon Mulvenna will of course give them all the frees.

Senior I, II and III

A slight revision on last year, rather than fielding a senior and reserve team, the senior squad has been split into 3 groups for the competition. This is purely to ensure that Heaney and co don’t attempt to field an all Derry side – unfortunately none of our referees are fluent in Derry (mix of cursing and Ulster Scots) and given the Derry “wans” have a tendency to provide regular feedback to referees, this was considered the best line of action. As always the senior squads are installed as favourites for the competition but due mainly to their inability to play 7s they usually get stuffed along the way. Will this year be any different?

Coaches / selectors will be in touch with everyone over the next 4 weeks.
