Bredagh v St Brigids Sunday 25th October 2009
Bredagh U10 Footballers Entertain St Brigids
Bredagh U10 footballers rounded off their weekly outdoor sessions for 2009, entertaining their local city rivals, St Brigids, in 3 challenge games on a very blustery and at times wet Sunday morning at Cherryvale. Despite the conditions the children produced three very exciting games that entertained the large crowd that had gathered to watch.
On pitch one the Bredagh lads were met by a very determined and competitive St Brigids team. Shaun Lyttle started the game in nets for the home side and was quickly called into action to thwart early St Brigids pressure. Gradually the midfield trio of Cormac O’Rawe, Liam Francis and Michael Napier started to dominate and provide chances for the forward line led by the very impressive Dara Curran. The Bredagh forwards were finding the going very tough against the well drilled St Brigids backline but eventually managed to get some scores on the board through the accurate feet of Ronan Costello and Matthew McKeogh. In defence Jake Carlin, a real star for the team all year, was starting to dominate assisted by the impressive Daniel Leggett and Liam O’Keefe. The two sides were very evenly matched throughout, with St Brigids taking some great scores from distance. Bredagh eventually pulled away through scores from Niall Shannon, a great effort that split the posts, Shaun Lyttle and Matthew Hamilton. The final act of the match was a magnificent block from Niall Boyle in the Bredagh defence to round off a really good game between the two sides.
On pitch two the Bredagh team struggled to match their St Brigids opponents in the first part of the game and only through the valiant efforts of Joseph Blaney and Cillian Durkan at midfield were the boys able to maintain some parity with their strong opponents. During the second phase of the game the Bredagh boys came more into the match, the highlights being some wonderful scores from the left foot of Connor O’Keefe and a magnificent high catch from the ever industrious Conor Nolan. Aodhan O’Keefe was starting to mop up many of the St Brigids attacks assisted by the very reliable Niall McFarland. The game was very evenly matched and there were many comments from the sidelines about the high standard of skills being shown. The introduction of Ryan Holland into the Bredagh side brought immediate success as his excellent passing gave a couple of opportunities to Lorcan Fahy to add to the Bredagh scoreline. Aaron Rooney was excellent throughout with his distribution and the accuracy of two cousins, PJ Lavery and Jude McStay, enabled Bredagh to finish strongly with some finely taken scores.
The teams on pitch three proved just as evenly matched as in the other games. The young St Brigids team played some very attractive football throughout. The Bredagh team led very prominently by Henry McGuigan, Sean Conaghan and Liam McFaul matched them score for score. The football was flowing throughout and enjoyed by all the players. Matthew O’Hara produced a couple of great blocks while Patrick Blaney was all over the pitch with his non stop action. Scores from the accurate boot of Lucas Mallon, assisted by Dara Magee, kept the Bredagh scoreboard ticking over. Luke McParland, Joseph McKee and Sean McFarland all contributed to a great Bredagh performance that rounded off a great year for the boys at this level.
Many thanks to the all players for putting on such great games and to the supporters for coming out on such a blustery Sunday morning.
Bredagh v St Pauls Sunday 18th October 2009
U-10 St Brigids Tournament Sunday 11th October 2009
Bredagh U10 boys footballers travelled with two strong teams to the St Brigids tournament at Harlequins last Sunday morning. They joined fourteen other teams, mostly from Co. Antrim, in what turned out to be a great tournament. There was plenty of fantastic football on display by the young competitors, and the event was well organised and well managed on the day, with the weather holding up, everyone had an enjoyable experience.
Team 2 were drawn in Group D with Creggan Kickhams, St James Aldergrove and St Pauls Belfast. Bredagh were slow to start against a very strong Creggan Kickhams team but settled eventually with Lorcan Fahy kicking over three great points from frees and Conor O’Keefe scoring two from play. The two other group games were much closer contests, with Lorcan Fahy dropping back as goalkeeper, settling the defence, Bredagh got into their stride and started to play good football. Eamon Carville hit a fabulous goal against Aldergrove and the tenacious Niall Boyle slotted over a fine point in the same game. In defence, Niall McFarland and Cillian O’Hare showed great resilience and excellent tackling, breaking down many attacks. In all three group games Matthew McKeogh showed great versatility playing in defence, midfield and attack, adapting to each sector with ease and displaying plenty of quality footballing ability.
Team 2 earned a shield quarter final place against Sarsfields, which they won comfortably, following some great scores by Dara Curran, Conor O’Keefe and Jude McStay. Next up in the semi-final were hosts, St Brigids, but once again the young Bredagh charges were not to be intimidated by the large crowd, playing great football to win comfortably in the end. Joseph Blaney and Niall Boyle were both classy in midfield, with some great fielding and passing, setting up plenty of scoring chances for the busy Conor Nolan and Dara Curran in attack. Niall Boyle himself contributed 1-01 to the Bredagh tally, with two well taken scores. Tim Cunningham was strong, fearless and skilful in defence, impressing the large crowd of spectators. Team 2 deservedly earned a place in the final against a very strong St Galls team. It was always going to be a difficult game for the young Bredagh lads, however they dug deep and despite a man of match performance in defence by Michael Napier, Bredagh just couldn’t match St Galls in size and strength and were unlucky to get defeated after a great performance.
Team 2: Lorcan Fahy, Matthew McKeogh, Conor Nolan, Niall McFarland, Michael Napier, Conor O’Keefe, Eamon Carville, Jude McStay, Joseph Blaney, Niall Boyle, Dara Curran, Cillian O’Hare, Tim Cunningham
Team 1 were drawn in Group A along with All Saints, Ballymena, Glenavy and St Galls. The team progressed through the group meeting Glenavy in the first game. After a slow start the boys managed to get their noses in front through some fine scores from Aodhan O’Keefe and Daniel Leggett and held on to win a tough encounter. The second game brought the boys into opposition to their Belfast neighbours St Galls. The first half was an evenly matched encounter with both teams matching each other score for score. In defence for Bredagh both Cillian Durkan and Niall Shannon worked hard to deny the lively St Galls forwards. In the second half the Bredagh lads managed to push on and great efforts by Liam O’Keefe and Brendan Gallen ensured that the team ran out winners by a few points. In the last group game the Bredagh team played with great gusto and led from the start through scores from Cormac O’Rawe and Aaron Rooney. In the second half the boys pushed further ahead with fine play from Ronan Costello who was popping up all over the field ably assisted by the strong running of Shaun Lyttle at midfield.
Having won their Group, the team was drawn against the O’Donovan Rosa club from Magherafelt. This was going to be a very tough affair for the boys as the Derry club are renowned for their strong underage setup. The game turned out to be very entertaining for the large watching crowd. Bredagh pulled away in the first half and with Jake Carlin dominant at midfield the team put a couple of great scores over the bar. Ronan Costello was again a threat up front assisted by the work of both Aaron Rooney and Daniel Leggett. In the second half the Bredagh lads were put under some pressure by the Rossa team but some fantastic saves from Liam Francis in the Bredagh nets and great blocking from Cormac O’Rawe, Sam O’Farrell and Liam O’Keefe, the lads weathered the storm and added a couple of late scores through the accurate boot of Daniel Leggett to win the game. Up next was a strong Clann na Gael side in the semi finals. Again the Bredagh boys worked tirelessly throughout the match but in this case could not break down the physically strong Clann defence. Against the breeze in the first half the boys fell two scores behind before opening their account through a fine Daniel Leggett point. Strong running in the second half by Brendan Gallen and Jake Carlin really put the Lurgan team under pressure but to no avail and a visibly tiring Bredagh team just came up short.
Once again the coaches would like to thank all the parents who came to watch the games and the St Brigids club for a fantastic day.
Team 1: Liam O’Keefe, Liam Francis, Brendan Gallen, Niall Shannon, Jake Carlin, Cormac O’Rawe, Shaun Lyttle, Cillian Durkan, Daniel Leggett, Aaron Rooney, Aodhan O’Keefe, Sam O’Farrell, Ronan Costello
U-10 Rossa Blitz Sunday 5th October 2009
Bredagh U10 footballers travelled across the city to take part in a football blitz hosted by the O’Donovan Rossa club. Two other teams, Clann na Gael from Armagh and St Brigids of Antrim were also involved in what proved to be an excellent day of football. The sun shone and the previous days gales had died down allowing for a feast of football to entertain the crowds of supporters and parents who had attended.
In game one Bredagh encountered St Brigids and got off to a strong start playing with great gusto and determination. Blocking and tackling were the themes for the day as the boys set about the game. Brendan Gallen and Jake Carlin were towers of strength in the middle of the field, ably assisted by Shaun Lyttle and Aaron Rooney in the forwards. Bredagh took some early scores through the accurate boot of Cormac O’Rawe and pushed on to register an impressive win against a very talented looking St Brigids outfit.
In game two Bredagh played Clann na Gael of Lurgan. Again the team set about their task with great determination. Dara Curran and Matthew McKeogh showed real flair in the forward line again assisted by the strong running midfield pairing of Jake Carlin and Cormac O’Rawe. Bredagh were unable to match their dominance on the scoreboard as they recorded a number of wides in the first half. However the excellent covering by the backs, including the impressive Matthew Hamilton and ever reliable Niall Boyle, ensured that the opposition forwards were held at bay. In the second half the Bredagh boys managed to put some scores on the board through Michael Napier and Conor Nolan and secured a second win of the day.
In the final game the Bredagh boys came up against a talented and well prepared Rossa team. Both sides had met in the Downpatrick tournament two weeks previously and had played out a great game with the Bredagh lads managing to keep their noses just out in front. This game proved to be the equal in terms of the skills and determination shown by both teams. The Bredagh boys, led by the strong running of Liam O’Keefe in the forwards managed to edge ahead; excellent cover by Daniel Leggett and Cillian Durkan snuffed out numerous Rossa attacks and when the defence was breached Liam Francis pulled off two top class stops to thwart the lively Rossa forwards. Eventually the Bredagh boys managed to pull away with scores coming from Niall McFarland, Aaron Rooney, Dara Curran and Shaun Lyttle. The win was secured through fantastic defending and blocking from Brendan Gallen, Niall Shannon and Matthew Hamilton, stopping all that came their way.
Many thanks to the Rossa club for hosting this event, and to the other clubs who participated in a very sporting and even blitz.
Bredagh Squad: Liam Francis, Aaron Rooney, Liam O’Keefe, Niall Shannon, Brendan Gallen, Niall Boyle, Cillian Durkan, Matthew Hamilton, Cormac O’Rawe, Jake Carlin, Matthew McKeogh, Michael Napier, Daniel Leggett, Conor Nolan, Dara Curran, Niall McFarland, Shaun Lyttle
U-10 Downpatrick Go-Games Blitz Saturday 26th September 2009
Bredagh U10 footballers travelled with two teams to the go-games blitz at Downpatrick last Saturday morning. Despite the time of year, the weather was perfect and there was plenty of fine football on display as the teams played games against Kilcoo and Downpatrick.
The opening game for team 2 was against the formidable Kilcoo. However, the young Bredagh lads were not to be intimidated by their opposition’s reputation and went on to win the game comfortably with great play in many areas of the pitch. Finn O’Neill was strong and tenacious in defence, along with P J Lavery and Dan Savage. Up front, Matthew McKeogh was in great form, showing great skill, balance and scoring ability. Luke McParland and Eamon Carville were also very menacing up front, giving their Kilcoo counterparts plenty to be worried about.
In their second game, team 2 were also very impressive, defeating the hosts Downpatrick with some great football. Fionn Kelly provided a very safe pair of hands in nets, while Michael Napier was very resilient in defence. Aodhan O’Keefe, Conor Nolan and Conor O’Keefe showed their usual stylish ability around the attacking zone, all scoring a couple of good points. However, the score of the game came from Finn O’Neill, who was playing his first game of competitive football in a Bredagh shirt. Finn ventured forward from his berth in defence, picked up the ball in the middle of the field, shrugged off two tackles and kicked over a great point from distance.
Team 2: Fionn Kelly, Finn O’Neill, Dan Savage, Matthew McKeogh, Aodhan O’Keefe, Conor Nolan, PJ Lavery, Luke McParland, Michael Napier, Conor O’Keefe, Eamon Carville
Bredagh team 1 opened their day with a very competitive game against a skilful Kilcoo team. Both teams played with great determination and showed plenty enthusiasm with Bredagh edging ahead through an opening point from Joseph Blaney. Additional scores from the accurate boot of Jude McStay enabled the Bredagh lads to move further ahead. Sam O’Farrell was outstanding in midfield alongside the excellent Brendan Gallen. Stout defending from Liam O’Keefe and Cillian Durkan ensure that many of the Kilcoo attacks were broken up and the ball transferred quickly back to the Bredagh forwards.
In their second game, team 1 were also very impressive against a strong and determined Downpatrick side. The Bredagh lads, led from the back by Niall Shannon and Mathew Hamilton, managed to push ahead with scores from Aaron Rooney and Brendan Gallen along with a goal from Michael Napier. Downpatrick pushed very hard towards the end of the game and almost drew level but came up just short due to the heroics of Liam Francis in the Bredagh goals.
Team 1: Liam Francis, Aaron Rooney, Sam O’Farrell, Liam O’Keefe, Jude McStay, Niall Shannon, Brendan Gallen, Joseph Blaney, Niall Boyle, Cillian Durkan, Matthew Hamilton
Many thanks to the host club, RGU Downpatrick, for their organisation and to all the players and coaches for assisting in an enjoyable day out for the boys.
Downpatrick Tournament Saturday 12th September 2009
Bredagh U-10 footballers almost made it two tournament wins in a row, only to be denied by Carryduff in the final of the prestigious Downpatrick tournament last Saturday afternoon.
Despite the disappointment of losing the final the lads played fantastic football throughout the tournament, defeating strongly fancied Rossa and Burren on the way to the final.
In the group stages there were some great performances in the maroon and gold shirts, particularly the win against Rossa in the first game of the morning. Brendan Gallen and Jake Carlin were very strong in the mid-field area and it took a good goal from Jake to settle the Bredagh nerves, setting them up nicely for the rest of the tournament. Ronan Costello, Aodhan O’Keefe and Aaron Rooney showed plenty of skill and footballing ability in attack, and a late goal from Ronan sealed a great win for Bredagh.
The remaining two games of the group stages were all about consolidation for Bredagh as they went on to beat Clonduff B and Teconnaght convincingly. Bredagh forwards, Sean Lyttle, Cormac O’Rawe and Lorcan Fahy were in good form in front of the posts, scoring 4-08 between them in the first three games. Conor O’Keefe also showed his classy style and accuracy scoring two fabulous points against Teconnaght and Clonduff B.
Winning their group, Bredagh went on to play Bryansford in the quarter-final and won quite comfortably to set up a semi-final against Burren, last year’s winners. The semi-final proved to be the best game of the tournament, ending in a draw in normal time. Bredagh went on to lift their game further in extra time, scoring 1-02 in four minutes to seal a great victory.
Whilst the forwards were all showing their ability to score up front, the most notable thing in the first five games was that Bredagh only conceded 1-05. This impressive statistic was as a result of the quality of the Bredagh defence. Liam O’Keefe, Niall Boyle, Michael Napier, Cillian Durkan, Niall Shannon and goalkeeper, Liam Francis, were all outstanding on the day.
In the final, Bredagh struggled to find the great form they had shown in their previous games. A strong start by Carryduff saw them surge three points clear. Bredagh settled for a short period and pulled the score back to 0-2 to 0-3. However, a great goal by Carryduff just before the end of the first half, took the wind out of the young Bredagh lads. Despite plenty of efforts to score in the second half, it wasn’t to be Bredaghs day and Carryduff went on to a deserved victory.
Well done to all the players, coaches and supporters for a great day.

St Michaels Tournament Saturday 29th August 2009
Bredagh boys U-10 football team demonstrated their potential by capturing the main silverware at the St Michaels Tournament in Magheralin last Saturday afternoon. It was a well deserved and timely reward for this group of young talented footballers who came so close on a couple of occasions earlier this season to winning tournaments.
The St Michaels tournament provided a platform for Bredagh U-10’s to show they had learned from previous tournaments and they were not prepared to accept another runners-up tag. Throughout the event the lads worked tirelessly and demonstrated their skill, tenacity and teamwork to win all their games and impress their mentors and followers alike.
In the group stage they were drawn with Tullylish, Dromara and Tir Na nog, winning against all three impressively, particularly Tir Na nog who were a big, strong and physical team. These three wins meant they topped the table and were drawn against St Michaels, the hosts, in the semi-final. This was always going to be a tough game playing against the home team, but Bredagh took it in their stride and won through to the final against Tir Na nog, who after finishing runners-up in group A, had beaten the winners of group B.
The final started as a tense affair, however Bredagh stuck to their game and kept their concentration to hold the Armagh side and win through by three points in the end.
The Bredagh defence was outstanding on the day, with Liam O’Keefe, Michael Napier, Cillian Durkan and Niall Shannon all playing solidly throughout, keeping the pressure off Liam Francis in nets. Indeed, Niall Shannon deservedly won player of the tournament for his hard work rate and defending skills in all five games.
The midfield pairing of Cormac O’Rawe and Brendan Gallen was as impressive as ever, as both gave 100 percent commitment throughout, with good fielding and tackling and providing a plentiful supply of good ball into the forward line.
The forwards were entertaining, Aaron Rooney displayed his skills and eye for the posts, as did Sean Lyttle, Sam O’Farrell and Dan Savage. The U-9 trio of Joseph Blaney, Conor Nolan and Aodhan O’Keefe were all fantastic, showing that they are well capable of playing and competing at U-10 level and providing a glimpse of what Bredagh U10 football will be like next year.
Well done to all the players for this fantastic performance and well deserved victory.

U-10 Carryduff Tournament 2009 Saturday 13th June 2009
A twenty strong panel of Bredagh U-10 boys footballers took part in the annual prestigious tournament at Carryduff on Saturday 13th June. They joined fifteen other clubs from around the province in what has become a highlight event in the U-10 calendar
Bredagh were drawn in Group C along with Watty Grahams (Glen, Co. Derry), St Endas, Co. Antrim and St Malachy’s, Castlewellan. They won this group with confidence, conceding only one point in the three matches.
Match 1
Bredagh 1-03 Watty Grahams 0-00
Bredagh got off to a solid start against the oak leaf county challengers displaying great strength in all areas of the field. Dara Curran opened the scoring with a great point from play in the first half. Bredagh got well into their stride in the second half and a point each from Ronan Costello and Shaun Lyttle, and a fabulous goal from Ronan Costello saw Bredagh take the points. The Bredagh half-back line of Liam O’Keefe, Brendan Gallen and Cillian Durkan were outstanding in this game, breaking down numerous opposition attacks and delivering good ball into the forward line.
Match 2
Bredagh 1-06 St Enda’s 0-01
Despite a low scoring first half, Bredagh went on to win this game comfortably as the forwards found their form in the second half. Bredagh’s only point in the first half came from ace mid-fielder Jake Carlin who, along with fellow mid-fielder Cormac O’Rawe had a great game. Corner-forward Joseph Blaney scored an outstanding point at the start of the second half, confidently striking over the black spot from distance while under pressure from his marker. Blaney followed up with a point from a well taken free and Jake Carlin, Cormac O’Rawe and Shaun Lyttle added their names to the score-sheet with a point each. Aaron Rooney scored the only goal of the game with a great strike from out on the right giving the keeper no chance.
Match 3
Bredagh 1-04 Castlewellan 0-00
Bredagh played Castlewellan in a challenge match a number of weeks ago and they knew now that they were up against a tough team. However, great defensive play by goal-keeper Liam Francis and the full-back line of Daniel Leggett, Niall Shannon and Niall Boyle frustrated Castlewellan as they tackled and won many balls from the Castlewellan forwards and stopped them from getting any easy chances. Up front Bredagh looked sharp and great points by Aodhan O’Keefe and Ronan Costello gave Bredagh a half-time lead. Bredagh pulled clear in the second half with a great goal from Shaun Lyttle, and a point each from Aaron Rooney and Aodhan O’Keefe. Notable good performances in this match from forwards Conor Nolan, Michael Napier, Patrick Blaney and Conor O’Keefe gave the Castlewellan defence plenty to worry about.
Bredagh topped Group C and went through to Group A in the second phase of the tournament. Carryduff ‘A’, Clann Eireann and Downpatrick joined Bredagh having won their respective groups.
Match 4
Bredagh 3-05 Downpatrick 0-00
This turned out to be surprisingly easy match as Bredagh went on to win comfortably with Shaun Lyttle hitting a goal and a point and Jake Carlin pointing a good free all in the first half, setting the lads up nicely for the second half. Aodhan O’Keefe opened the second half scoring with a great goal from a free and Ronan Costello followed up with another good goal from play. Jake Carlin hit two fabulous points from distance and Ronan Costello completed the scoring with a well taken point. Sam O’Farrell played great football in this game making some good tackles to dispossess Castlewellan. Michael Napier was menacing up front and came close to hitting scores on a couple of occasions.
Match 5
Bredagh 1-03 Carryduff 1-03
This turned out to be the toughest game so far for the Bredagh lads. However, they were the better team but failed to convert a number of chances resulting in a drawn game. Shaun Lyttle opened the scoring with a spectacular goal from a 45. The well hit kick sailed past a crowded goal area and into the top right hand corner of the net. Brendan Gallen followed with a good point from play to give Bredagh a four point lead. Carryduff gave it their all and excellent goal-keeping by Liam Francis and great defending by Niall Shannon, Daniel Leggett and Niall Boyle increasingly kept Carryduff from taking numerous scores. Despite this defensive effort by Bredagh, Carryduff hit a goal and two points to take a one point lead at the interval. Ronan Costello hit a nice point at the start of the second half to even things up. Bredagh went on to miss a few opportunities before Carryduff scored a point to take the lead. Time was running out for Bredagh, until Ronan Costello knocked over another great point to clinch a draw
Match 6
Bredagh 0-01 Clann Eireann 0-02
The final game of the group required Bredagh to win to share the championship with Carryduff. It turned out to be a very tense game, with play flowing from end to end and all the Bredagh lads playing their hearts out to win. It was very low scoring due to the great defences of both teams and Clann Eireann led by a point at half-time. Shaun Lyttle hit a point after the interval to even things up, but Bredagh missed a couple of close range frees which were taken too quickly and this turned out to be the difference between the two teams as Clann Eireann went on to score their only chance of the second half and win by a point.
Not winning the event was very disappointing for all the players because they worked so hard and probably knew they were the best team overall. Nevertheless, there were some great positives to come from the performances, particularly the knowledge that Bredagh U-10’s have improved significantly since the start of the year and they are now probably one of the best U-10 teams around; their attitude, discipline, skills and teamwork were first class and the coaches couldn’t have asked for anymore from the players. So, well done to all involved and keep up the good work.
Panel and scorers: Liam Francis, Niall Shannon, Daniel Leggett, Sam O’Farrell, Niall Boyle, Liam O’Keefe, Brendan Gallen (0-01), Cillian Durkan, Jake Carlin (0-05), Cormac O’Rawe (0-01), Ronan Costello (2-05), Shaun Lyttle (3-04), Aaron Rooney (1-01), Dara Curran(0-01), Conor O’Keefe, Joseph Blaney (0-02), Patrick Blaney, Michael Napier, Aodhan O’Keefe (1-02), Conor Nolan
Newry Mitchells Tournament Saturday 6th June 2009
A panel of nineteen young Bredagh lads travelled to the prestigious Newry Mitchells tournament on Saturday morning. After a couple of weeks of glorious sunshine, nobody would have thought that the weather could take such a dramatic turn, as it rained continuously all day making difficult conditions for all the teams. Nevertheless, a good tournament went ahead and the presence of a large marquee provided welcome shelter between the games. This was the first opportunity for the Bredagh U-10’s to take part in such competition this season and they performed remarkably well. Details of all the games are outlined below. Well done to Newry Mitchells for hosting a fabulous tournament in such awful weather conditions
Game 1
Bredagh 0-05 Clonduff 1-03
This was a fairly evenly contested game in the first period with a single point separating the teams at half-time. Cormac O’Rawe scored two fantastic points at the start of the game before Clonduff got their name on the score sheet. The bredagh lads worked very hard, notably Niall Boyle and Niall Shannon in defence who made life very difficult for the Clonduff forwards. Half-time score Bredagh 0-02 Clonduff 0-03.
Bredagh played the better football in the second half and had the Hilltown supremos against the ropes for long periods scoring three points in succession, first from Conor O’Keefe and then two in a row from Lorcan Fahy to take a deserved two point lead. However, close to the end of the second period a great move by Clonduff resulted in a goal just before the full-time whistle to give Clonduff a one point victory.
Game 2
Bredagh 0-02 Armagh Harps 0-0
In this low scoring game Bredagh always looked to be the better team. Some great football was played by Brendan Gallen, now moved out to midfield, who got the first of Bredagh’s points. There was plenty of great interchange play by Dara Curran, Liam O’Keefe and Michael Napier, some of the younger members of the squad, but the Armagh team did well to block a number of scoring opportunities. Despite Bredagh dominating the play in the second half, there was only one score which was a great point from half-forward Shaun Lyttle. Armagh defended well as Bredagh efforts to add to their tally were successively dampened.
Game 3
Bredagh 2-04 Lucan Sarsfields 1-06
This was probably one of the most entertaining games of the day as both the Dublin team, last years winners, and Bredagh played some great quality football. The game flowed from end to end and first to score was Shaun Lyttle with a great goal. Shortly after Lucan replied with a goal themselves before Lorcan Fahy deftly struck a great point over the bar. Lucan followed with a dominant period and hit three points in a row. There could have been a few goals only for great goal-keeping by Liam Francis who cleared the Bredagh line on a number of occasions. Matthew Hamilton was solid in defence and young Aodhan O’Keefe and Michael Napier were looking menacing up front. Bredagh got a chance to catch their breath when Michael Napier hit the back of the net with a well taken goal and he followed up with a superb point to give Bredagh a two point lead. Lucan took another point just before the interval to leave the half-time score at Bredagh 2-02 Lucan 1-04….all to play for.
The second half didn’t produce as many scores but the quality of football remained as good. Bredagh looked the more confident at the restart and hit two superb points on the trot, first from Lorcan Fahy and then young Joseph Blaney, to give the Belfast lads a bit of breathing space. Lucan kept their heads up and continued to play to their game plan and cancelling out the Bredagh points with two great points from play. However, this was to be the last scores of the game as Bredagh held on with some fine defending by Cillain Durkan and Dan Savage to win by a narrow margin of one point.
Game 4
Bredagh 2-07 Kilcoo 1-04
This was to prove a slightly easier contest than the previous game, with the Bredagh lads buoyed by their win over last year’s holders they went out in this game and played fantastic football. There were some great passages of play by Niall Shannon, Cillian Durkan and Matthew McKeogh setting up the forwards to take some nice scores. Shaun Lyttle slotted over three good points and Lorcan Fahy and Cormac O’Rawe each got a good point. Kilcoo hit the back of the net before the half-time interval to leave the score at Bredagh 0-05 Kilcoo 1-00.
Aodhan O’Keefe opened the second half scoring with a superb point and the game was over as a contest as Shaun Lyttle found the back of the net on two occasions with great goals. Kilcoo rallied as best as they could and scored four nice points but Bredagh had the last say as Tim Cunningham pointed a great effort from mid distance.
Quarter-Final
Bredagh 4-05 Glenn 0-01
This game proved how tough the group was that Bredagh had been drawn in as Glenn, runners-up in their group, were nowhere near providing the same sort of challenge that Bredagh encountered with all of their group teams. Bredagh dominated the game and scored 3-01 without reply in the first half. Joseph Blaney, Shaun Lyttle and Matthew McKeogh all scored great goals and Lorcan Fahy scored a fabulous point. The second half continued in similar fashion to the first with the Bredagh lads hitting 1-04 to Glenn’s only point of the game. The Bredagh scores came from Conor O’Keefe (1-0), Shaun Lyttle (0-01), Cormac O’Rawe (0-01), Cillian Durkan (0-01) and Liam O’Keefe (0-01).
Semi-Final
Bredagh 1-03 Kileavy 2-04
Bredagh had to wait up to an hour before this semi-final encounter and started the game sluggishly as Kileavy, who had continued almost successively from their quarter-final game, got off to a quicker start. Kileavy hit 2-03 to no score in the first half leaving the Bredagh lads with a mountain to climb in the 10 minute second half. However, buoyed up by their half-time talk from lead mentor Martin Durkan, the young Bredagh charges came out a different team in the second half and hit the ground running from the off. Shaun Lyttle fired in 1-02 in determined fashion and a good point from Cormac O’Rawe brought the Belfast challengers within striking range. A great effort by forward Jude McStay came off the post which would have brought Bredagh back into contention if it was a few inches to right. Despite a huge effort by all the Bredagh team, Kileay were just too strong in the end and went on to win by four points

St Galls Tournament 2009 Monday 4th May 2009
Bredagh entered two teams in the annual May Day St Galls tournament. The tournament is for players in P5 and under and Bredagh had a good mix of players on both teams.
Team ‘A’ played in the cup competition and won their group. However, they were unlucky to come up against a very strong St Brides team in the quarter final and narrowly lost out by one point.
Team ‘B’ played in the plate competition and won through to the final where they were defeated by Carryduff by two points in a very tense and entertaining affair.
There were some very good footballing skills by all the Bredagh players which was very enjoyable to watch. Well done to all the players.

Bredagh v Teconnaght Saturday 25th April 2009
Bredagh U-10's played two entertaining games against Teconnaght in sunny Cherryvale on Saturday morning. The games were very competitive and there was plenty of fine team football on display. Well done to all the players involved.

Bredagh v Clann Eireann Sunday 5th April 2009
Bredagh U-10 footballers and their supporters enjoyed three entertaining challenge games against Co. Armagh club, Clann Eireann, in sunny Cherryvale Park last Sunday morning.
Game 1, which involved Clann Eireann’s strongest team, was full of talented footballers on both sides and the standard of football didn’t disappoint the coaches and parents who looked on. There were great performances all over the field from Bredagh throughout the three periods of play. Brendan Gallen was as tenacious as ever, making many fine clearances in the Bredagh defence. Sam O’Farrell, Jake Carlin and Liam Francis also did a good job in defence, while at midfield, Shaun Lyttle showed great strength and determination battling for the ball and also got his name on the scoresheet with a couple of fine long range points in the third period. Eamon Carville and Aaron Rooney competed well up front but the strong Clann Eireann defence were difficult to break.
On the second pitch the Bredagh footballers got off to a shaky start only to draw level close to then end of the final quarter. Clann Eireann had a number of classy players on show and Bredagh, through the endeavours of players such as Michael Napier, Ronan Costello, Liam O’Keefe and Conor Nolan managed to claw their way back into the game. Clann Eireann tackled like “mini Francie Bellews” as one observer pointed out and the Bredagh lads initially struggled to make headway. However Conor Nolan’s two opportunistic goals in the final quarter brought some cheer to the home crowd who were enjoying both the fine match and the first signs of Summer (hopefully to last). Some accurate shooting from Connor O’Keefe and the industry of Darra Curran, Ryan Holland and Cillian Durkan ensured that the Belfast lads ended the game on a high note.
On pitch three the final match of the day took place between the development squads of both teams and this proved to be a very evenly fought contest. The Bredagh team had a number of players making their debut in the club colours and they did themselves proud by overcoming a tall and talented Clann Eireann outfit over the course of the match. Lucas Mallon and Mathew Rainbird proved to be real match winners with their accurate scoring while Matthew McKeogh put in a real man of the match performance covering every blade of grass. Seán Conaghan, Fionn Kelly, Patrick Blaney and Michael Hooley all gave their all while one of the highlights was a great block in defence by Matthew O’Hara to stop a goal bound blockbuster.
All in all there was a great days play. Many thanks to all the players and coaches from both Bredagh and Clann Eireann for their efforts on the day.

Downpatrick Tournament Saturday 13th September 2008
A squad of seventeen U-10's travelled to Downpatrick on Saturday morning to take part in this well run annual event.
Bredagh were drawn in a tough group with two strong south Down clubs, Burren and Ballymartin, and the hosts Downpatrick 'B' team.
The first group match against Ballymartin was a very tight affair, ending in a draw 1-1 to 0-4. Conor Lally scored a nice point in the first half and Aaron Rooney scored a great goal in the second half to level the match after Ballymartin took a 3 point lead.
Next up was Downpatrick 'B'. This was a much easier game for the Bredagh team and they won with a scoreline of 4-04 to 0-00. Bredagh led by two goals at half time after Conal Doyle netted a great goal early in the game and Matthew Hamilton found the back of the net with a brilliant strike before the end of the half. Ella Durkan opened the second half scoring with two superb points in succession. Conal O'Rawe and Liam Francis both found the back of the net with great goals before Lorcan Fahy fired a penalty just wide of the post. Liam Francis completed the scoring with a well taken point in the closing stages of the game.
The final group game was against Burren. This ended with a win for Burren 3-03 to 1-0, with the Bredagh goal being scored by Liam Francis. Burren displayed great talent as expected but Bredagh played very well allowing them only one goal in the second half.
Bredagh finished third in the group on scores. This put them through to the shield competition were they faced Castlewellan in the quarter-final.
Castlewellan proved just too strong for the young Bredagh team winning the game by a scoreline of 3-04 to 0-01, the only Bredagh point coming from Liam Francis.
The tournament provided great experience for this young Bredagh team, particularly getting to play some of the best teams in South and East Down.
Well done to all the players involved and keep up the good work at training.

U-10 Carryduff Tournament Saturday 14th June 2008
The U-10 footballers put on a fantastic performance at this prestigious tournament to retain the B group cup for the third year in a row. The day started off a bit damp as rain clouds moved in during the parade and for the first game however, it didn't last very long and the sun eventually shone through in more ways than one.
In the qualifying group stages their first match was against Errigal Ciaran from Co. Tyrone. This contest proved too tough for the young Bredagh team as Errigal Ciaran looked stronger, more experienced and better disciplined. Bredagh only managed to get 1 point from a well taken free by Lorcan Fahy.
Next game was against St Theresa's, and Bredagh turned on the style in this game showing their true footballing ability. They won this match with a scoreline of 4-3 to 0-0. Scorers for Bredagh were Lorcan Fahy (2-1), Emmett Curran (0-1), Liam Francis (0-1), Conor Lally (1-0), Matthew Hamilton (1-0).
The qualifying group positions, Errigal Ciaran first, Bredagh second and St Theresa's third put Bredagh in Group B of the main tournament.
First up in group B was Watty Grahams from Co. Derry. Again Bredagh showed their ability to play football, winning comfortably 2-3 to 0-0, with scores from Lorcan Fahy (0-2), Ella Durkan (1-0), Conor Lally (1-0) and Emmett Curran (0-1)
Their second game against Aldergrove was a very tense low scoring affair and Bredagh narrowly won with a scoreline of 1-1 to 0-1, thanks to a great goal from Rory Mc Closkey and a point from Emmett Curran.
Last game of the group was against St. Enda's, which Bredagh had to win to win the Group. The first half saw St. Enda's taking the lead with point. Only for great defending, blocking and goalkeeping from Bredagh it could have been more. Bredagh were now up against it in the second half as St Endas were very strong. However, the Bredagh team came out in the second half, fired up after their half time team talk by Ciaran O'Keefe, Paddy Rooney and Eamon McCloskey and they played with great hunger and desire to win. They threw all they had at St. Endas. Lorcan Fahy casually slotted over a free with great skill and this was followed by a great long range point from Conal O'Rawe, giving Bredagh the narrowest of leads. The last 5 minutes were nail biting for the Bredagh fans as the players never gave up and went on to win deservedly.
This was a great day for the Bredagh U-10's and a great day for the club. Well done to all the players, coaches and parents. And well done to Carryduff GAC for running such a well organised tournament and for all the hospitality provided.
Bredagh Team; Conor Lally, Liam Francis, Niall Shannon, Fintan Quinn, Lorcan Fahy, Emmett Curran, Conal Doyle, Ella Durkan, Oran O'Connor, Sam O'Farrell, Matthew Hamilton, Daire Magee, Aaron Rooney, Rory McCloskey, Matthew Stewart, Andy Harney, Conal O'Rawe
Bryansford Tournament Sunday 1st June 2008
Having split the large panel of players into two teams, Bredagh team “B” played three games in their section of the Bryansford tournament. On a very hot and long afternoon the boys all provided great entertainment and the performances improved as the day went on. First up was a very close encounter with St. Pauls “B”, with Bredagh eventually taking the honours through a great point by Conal O’Rawe. Best for Bredagh in this game were Sam O’Farrell who worked tirelessly in defence ably supported by Tim Cunningham and Cillian O’Hare.
Next up after a long delay was a very tall and strong Clann Eireann “B” team. The Bredagh lads took a while to switch on to the competitive element of the match, failing to mark up in defence and leaving goalkeeper Michael Hooley to make some great saves. In the second half great efforts form Lorcan Short, Michael Napier and Eamon Carville brought he Bredagh team back into contention before the Clann team ran out as worthy winners by a couple of goals with Oisin Hanna almost breaking the crossbar with a rasping drive for Bredagh.
Last up in this action the Bredagh lads faced the home “B” team and played with much more purpose. A couple of points from Oran O’Connor and Andy Harney were followed by a magnificent double penalty save from Sam O’Farrell. Some great play out of defence by Liam O’Keefe and lung bursting runs in midfield by Conal Doyle ensured that Bredagh started to get on top of the opposition. A great goal finish and a follow up point by Aaron Rooney ensured that the Bredagh lads ended the day with a great victory.
Squad: Aaron Rooney, Liam O’Keefe, Andy Harney, Michael Hooley, Lorcan Short, Sam O’Farrell, Tim Cunningham. Conal Doyle, Eamon Carville, Oisin Hanna, Cillian O’Hare, Conal O’Rawe
Teconnaght Go Games Event Saturday 24th May 2008
The U-10 footballers fielded an ‘A’ and ‘B’ team in the Teconnaght Go Games Event on Saturday morning. The event included three other teams, the hosts Teconnaght, Saul and Laitroim.
The ‘A’ team were involved in three very competitive games which produced very entertaining football for all the travelling Bredagh fans. In the first game against Teconnaght, the Bredagh players displayed great skill in all areas of the pitch, with six of the nine outfield players taking scores. Ella Durkan slotted over 4 brilliant points, one of which was from a sideline ball from a very acute angle. Aaron Rooney and Emmet Curran were very impressive up front scoring 2 points each. The other scores came from Brendan Gallen (1-0), Liam Francis (1-0) and Conal Doyle (0-1). Niall Shannon did a fantastic job as goalkeeper and Matthew Hamilton had an eye-catching performance at right back.
Next match was against Laitroim. Laitroim had the advantage of playing with a strong breeze in the first half. Aaron Rooney netted a great goal in the first half, along with a point from Conal Doyle to keep Bredagh in contention. Bredagh had the advantage of the breeze in the second half and scored 1-6 without reply from Laitroim. The scorers for Bredagh were Brendan Gallen (1-2), Emmet Curran (0-2), Oran O’Connor (0-1) and Ella Durkan (0-1).
The final match for the ‘A’s was against a very strong Saul team. The Bredagh players did remarkably well and showed great courage and heart in this game as they competed for every ball, in what turned out to be a very evenly matched game. Emmet Curran fired home two great goals in the first half to give Bredagh the lead. Saul came back in the second half, but points from Sam O’Farrell, Ella Durkan and Emmet Curran kept it all very close in the end.
Squad: Niall Shannon, Matthew Hamilton, Liam Francis, Brendan Gallen, Oran O’Connor, Conal Doyle, Ella Durkan, Emmet Curran, Aaron Rooney, Eamon Carville, Oisin Hannah, Chris Haughey, Cillian O’Hare, Paul Verdon, Daire Magee, Sam O’Farrell, John McNamee
'B' Team Report
Match 1
Bredagh 1-6 v 1-2 Teconnaught
Bredagh got off to a great start in their first match with Sam O’Farrell leading the way with some fantastic points from play. Bredagh led at half time and would have been further ahead only for the heroics of the Teconnaught keeper. The second half followed along the same lines with Bredagh eventually beating the keeper with a fine finish from Daire Magee.
Match 2
Bredagh 0-6 v 6-7 Leitrim
Bredagh lost out to a string Leitrim team. Best for Bredagh were Mathew Hamilton who knocked over 4 points from play, one from a very acute angle, and Eamon Carville. Leitrim pressed on at all stages of the game with one or two of their players displaying fantastic skills of the game. Fair play to the Bredagh lads who tried hard to the final whistle.
Match 3
Bredagh 5–4 v Saul 5-5
In a very tight encounter Bredagh lost very narrowly to a Saul team which had one or two very talented players. Bredagh, who played against a strong breeze in the first half, took sometime to settle losing by 4 goals and 3 points at half time Bredagh, led by Conal Doyle who scored three goals in the second half, came right back to bring just one point between the teams.. Best for Bredagh in a great team effort in the second half were Conal Doyle, Aaron Rooney who tucked away two goals, Paul Verdon and Oisin Hanna. It is worth noting that Bredagh played the entire game with one less player than Saul to ensure that everyone got a game.

P5 St. Galls Tournament 5th May 2008
Bredagh P5’s participated in the annual tournament at St Galls pitches in summer conditions on bank holiday Monday. The seventeen strong Bredagh team were grouped with St Pauls, Davitts and Gort Na Mona for the league phase following a colourful opening parade of some 20 teams.
1st Game
First up were Gort Na Mona as Bredagh fielded a strong contingent of P5’s drawn from the U-10 squad. The Bredagh lads hit the ground running as they notched up a high score in the first half of 3-2. The scores came from Lorcan Fahy 1-1, Brendan Gallen 1-0 and Sean Lyttle 1-1. Considering there was only 10 minutes in each half, this was a remarkable achievement against such a good team.
The second half was a much tighter affair with only one point scored from the boot of a Gort Na Mona forward. However, Bredagh showed great enthusiasm and hunger as they battled to contain attempts by Gort Na Mona to get back into the game. There were fine performances all over the field, particularly from Brendan Gallen, Fintan Quinn, Sean Lyttle and Andy Harney.
Final score; Bredagh 3-2 Gort Na Mona 0-1
2nd Game
Next up was the well fancied St Pauls who traditionally do well in this tournament. This game was much tighter as each team worked hard to create openings. The first half ended with no scores, as Bredagh backs Matthew Hamilton, Liam Francis, Sam O’Farrell and goalkeeper Oran O’Connor did a great job in breaking down many St Pauls attacks.
The second half also was a tight affair with only one point coming from the St Pauls lads. Bredagh were unlucky not to score through some great football from Aaron Rooney, Eamon Carville and Liam O’Keefe.
Final score; Bredagh 0-0 St Pauls 0-1
3rd Game
The final group game was against a strong Davitts team. However, Bredagh continued with their great form, outplaying Davitts in the first half. Oran O’Connor was in scoring mood as he put away 1-1 to give the Bredagh lads a comfortable lead going into the second half. The second half also saw the Bredagh lads taking control as Rian Woods, Pearse Woods, Niall Shannon, Tim Cunningham and Jake Carlin played great football. A bredagh win was never in doubt as Jake Carlin scored a great goal to put the game beyond reach halfway through the second half.
Final Score; Bredagh 2-1 Davitts 0-0
Bredagh finished second in their group behind St Pauls, giving them a quarter-final match against hosts St. Galls.
Quarter-final
The Bredagh lads were not to be intimidated against host club St. Galls, as they started out full of determination and enthusiasm. The lads battled hard for every ball and got themselves in to a commanding position as they took control. First up to score was Brendan Gallen with a superbly taken point from play. Bredagh continued to dominate as they won a free close to the St. Galls goal-line. The free was confidently taken by Lorcan Fahy as he made no mistake knocking it accurately over the bar. St. Galls were glad to hear the half-time whistle to get a break from the relentless pressure and were lucky to be only 2 points behind. St. Galls came out with more hunger in the second half and scored a point quickly from the restart. The Bredagh lads were not about to line down as a well worked ball through to the forward line was knocked over the bar by Lorcan Fahy. The game ebbed and flowed with great competitive football and, following another point from St. Galls, the point of the day was scored by Lorcan Fahy from a sideline ball at a very acute angle. St. Galls threw everything at Bredagh in the last few minutes and managed to knock over 2 more points, leaving the final score at 0-4 each. However, as everyone wondered what was going to happen next, a loud cheer went up from the St. Galls camp as the referee announced they were winners for getting a 45, whilst he claimed Bredagh got none.
This decision was very difficult for all the Bredagh players as they played their hearts out throughout this game and in the earlier group stages. The players were disappointed but they acted with dignity, accepting the referee’s judgement. The overall performance by the Bredagh team was outstanding and they should all be very proud of their performances throughout the tournament. Based on the footballing talent on display today, Bredagh are going to have no problem fielding excellent football teams in the future.
Well done to all the players, coaches and parents who provided support throughout the day

Bredagh v Carryduff Sunday 4th May 2008
Bredagh v St Pauls Sunday 27th April 2008
Bredagh U-10’s played two very enjoyable games on Sunday against our near neighbours St Paul’s of Holywood. Both games were played in a great atmosphere and in wonderfully sunny conditions. In match one Bredagh scored two goals and a fine point in the opening period of the match through Shaun Lyttle, Jake Carlin and Mathew Hamilton while St Pauls scored five points in a very evenly contested game. Only some fine saves by Rory McCluskey kept the St Pauls forwards at bay. The second period was a lower scoring affair with Bredagh scoring two points, one from distance from Liam Francis and the other from Conor Lally, to just one from St Paul’s but again there was great play on both sides with some great fielding and passing. St Pauls did shoot a number of wides from good positions in this period. The last period of play saw St Pauls again fail to convert a number of chances after good passages of play but Bredagh defended very well through Conal Doyle, Emmett Curran and Ella Durkan and came strong towards the end with goals from Shaun Lyttle and Rory McCluskey and a fine point from Conal O’Rawe to complete a very evenly balanced match.
Final score. Bredagh 4 – 5 v 1 – 7 St Pauls
Bredagh Squad; Rory McCluskey, Michael Hooley, Maedbh Downey, Ella Durkan, Liam Francis, Jake Carlin, Emmett Curran, Conal O’Rawe, Conal Doyle, Mathew Hamilton, Oran O’Connor, Shaun Lyttle, Niall Shannon, Conor Lally

U-10 Carryduff Tournament Saturday 16th June 2007
Bredagh under 10s travelled to the fantastically run Carryduff tournament with 20 players hoping to repeat the success they had in the St Gall’s May Day blitz. This was not to be, they lost the first match of the three team league to, funny enough, St Galls. The coaches put this down to a slow start and a lack of discipline. Our second game was against Clann Eireann who we defeated to progress into the B Cup.
First up were St Pauls, we played some great fast football and won by three points in a keenly fought contest. Next came the Carryduff B team, we scored 3 goals in quick succession and won that one aswell. Last came a strong Teconnaught team who had a very strong a capable player in the middle of the park. Disaster, within 15 seconds we were a goal down, but this was a different team that started the day badly, they never lost heart and showed great heart to fight their way back into it and win a very closely contested match by 2 points.
The celebrations that followed were long and noisy. It is hard to single individuals out for praise, but as we purposely didn’t have a captain the players themselves picked out Ryan Noble-Walker to accept the cup, this speaks volumes of his contribution on the day.
A big thanks to the organisation committee from Carryduff and the parents who supported their kids and assisted with words of encouragement and support from the sidelines.
Bredagh win P5 Tournament
It was a great day out for the Bredagh U-10’s at a windy, sunny, very wet, and then sunny annual P5 tournament at St Gal's.
Bredagh’s group contained Gort na Mona, Eire Og and St Pauls and we won all three games to top their division. This included two clean sheets and some fantastic score taking, with goals from Ryan Noble Walker, Ronan Quinn, Conall Deery, Brendan Stewart, Conor Wilson and Conor Lally, with Lucy Brown unlucky not to score herself. The defence held the key with some fantastic blocking from the tenacious Michael Brown and some fantastic interceptions from Emmet Curran, Conall Doyle and Fionntan Quinn. The midfield was marshalled by the busy Sean Blaney, Conor Leggett and Oisin O’Callaghan. Mark McLaughlin starred in between the sticks and pulled off a string of fine saves, he also played a half up front and scored a great point. One for the high points was a Bredagh defender heading the ball clear.
Next up was the quarter final against the host club St Galls.
This was another fantastic display and we edged a close match by 3-0 to 1-2.
Next was a hard working Lamh Dearg team and this was a thriller, Bredagh were coasting this one and were 6 points up with one minute to go, then disaster, two very quick goals and Bredagh were lucky to hold out for a draw in ordinary time. There was no way to split both teams. A further 3 minutes each way was ordered, and Bredagh made no mistakes this time with the boys winning 2-2 to 0-0.
The Final awaited for the boys and a chance to emulate the victory of two years ago. This was a tense affair which was obvious from the way large crowd of Bredagh supporters were pacing up and down the line. We held a 1-1 to 0-0 lead and with less than a minute to go St Johns scored a goal, and but for some stupendous blocking and last ditch defending we could have thrown this away, then the final whistle blew and the festivities started.
The mentors were delighted for the children who played their hearts for their Club and it was a very proud occasion for managers Boyd Devlin and Peadar Doyle, and for the their supporters who braved on occasions what was horrendous weather conditions. No one player deserved more praise than the other, this was a great team performance.
Well done to our U-10’s.
Dromara Go Games Go Games, Saturday August 5th - the boys played six and won six at Dromara against the host club, Carryduff and Drumaness. Coaches Boyd Devlin and Oliver Dornan took a great total of 26 players and both the management and supporters noted the slick hand-passing, running off the ball and superb blocking, most notably by Sean McGourty, who made three blocks in-a-row against the same player, along with numerous other blocks.
Challenge at St Paul's Sunday, July 23rd
Go Games at Carryduff Blitz, Saturday July 1st - Bredagh had two teams at sunny Carryduff. They played a total of six games against Carryduff, Drumaness and St Johns, winning five of their games. The game with St John's was notable as there were two sets of brothers on the field for Bredagh - Conor and Liam Francis and Declan and Brendan Stewart. Both of the younger brothers scored, with the younger Stewart outscoring his elder brother. A great days football was enjoyed by all. The next Go Games will be on August 5th. The boys are on a break from training until Sunday July 16th.
Bredagh v Aldergrove
Challenge game, Sunday June 18th - the boys played a lively, enjoyable and evenly contested match against Aldergrove in Cherryvale. With 30 players available, there were three 20-minute periods and the entire team was substituted for the start of the second period, and again midway through the final period. Bredagh played some excellent two-touch football and some fast flowing moves ending with great scores. The Final Result - a draw of course!
Carryduff Tournament
Saturday June 10th - the Bredagh boys were absolutely magnificent at this competition. They played superb football all the way through their five games and deservedly won a share of the Group B Shield. With a bit of luck, Bredagh could easily have won Group A but their mentors were delighted with the overall performance, which they rated to be as good as any by a Bredagh U-10 team in recent years (and that's saying something!). In the first game, Bredagh were better than the fancied South Armagh outfit Silverbridge and were very unlucky to lose to a late score, 0-2 to 0-1. Jarlath Burns' boys nearly won Group A later on. Bredagh beat St Teresa's in the second game by 1-7 to 0-1 and went into Group B where they dominated St Patrick's Lisburn. The boys led by 0-3 to 0-1 but were caught by another late and fortunte goal. They couldn't believe their luck but still responded brilliantly to beat St Galls by 2-3 to 1-2 and then Rossa (Magherafelt) by 0-2 to 0-1 in a really tight encounter. It was a must-win game for Bredagh and they just about got there with a deflected point from Tom Doherty. This victory meant that we were joint winners with Rossa.
Star Players - Conor Francis was simply brilliant at midfield alongside the excellent Conor Costello. Thomas Gallen had his best games ever in a Bredagh shirt, while tenacious half-backs Sean Blaney and Conor Kelly were the springboard for numerous attacks. Declan Stewart scored 1-1 but his industry deserved much more. Everyone of the 19 players deserves great credit for representing the club so well.
Cherryvale Challenge - Bredagh had so many players that 13 of them stayed behind to play a friendly against extra players from St Patrick's Lisburn. Bredagh won by four scores to one and the mentors noted how much all of the players have improved since the start of the year. All the hard work from the coaches and players is paying dividends. Keep it up lads!
East Down Blitz
Bredagh played in the first East Down Go Games Tournament on Saturday 3rd June in Teconnaught.
We had two teams who played two games each, beating Teconnaught A and B, and St Paul’s A and B.
The next Go Games Tournament will be on July 1st.
