U12 Away Day
Sunday 18th October 2009

It was an early start for the squad of nearly forty U12 players who headed off into the Glens of Antrim for their annual team-building away day. First stop was Glenravel where both Bredagh U12 ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams played challenge matches against two sides from Con Magee’s GAC. Despite the drizzle, the U12 management team was pleased with their teams’ performances: the ‘B’ squad produced an impressive win against physical and skilful opponents, the ‘A’ squad lost but played well in the second period and as conditions worsened were unlucky not to put more scores on the board. The hospitality of the Glenravel club was much appreciated and everyone agreed that their new clubhouse and leisure facilities are second to none. Next stop was Eurospar in Ballycastle where the players were given an opportunity to engage in some ‘retail therapy’ before boarding the coach and heading up the road to Watertop Farm where instructors from Ardclinis Outdoor Adventure put the visitors through their paces; the team-building activities included rock climbing and abseiling, low ropes challenge, and archery. After a couple of hours climbing, gripping, slipping, and spilling buckets of water it was time to hit the road again and get some well-deserved food and refreshments at The Glens Hotel in Cushendall. The food was polished off in record time and with time pressing everyone hurriedly got back on to the coach and headed for home. The trip back was a very subdued affair with the coaches and parents able to read their Sunday papers in peace while the exhausted footballers chatted quietly and relaxed after their busy day in the Glens.

St Josephs 2-08 Bredagh 1-08
Sunday 13th September 2009

With the season coming to a close, the sun finally decided to take its hat off as Bredagh went to do battle against a feisty St. Joseph’s team at Ballykinlar. Although the home side emerged victorious, it was the Belfast team who produced the better football on the day and who will feel disappointed not have taken something from the game.
St. Joseph’s got off to a storming start with a goal and two points. It was well into the half before Bredagh’s mid-field finally closed down their opponents and began winning the ball. Emmet Curran, Séan Blaney, Pauric Woods, Declan McCartney and on-form Conall Doyle played some outstanding football during the latter stages of the half and were unlucky not to get more for their efforts. A stunning, long-range point from Cillian McMinn then settled the nerves, followed by a deftly taken score from Conall O’Rawe. Ronan Quinn became a constant threat as Bredagh now overwhelmed the St. Joseph’s back lines. Against the run of play, the home side were then awarded two consecutive close-range frees which they converted easily. To make things worse for the resurgent visitors, Darragh King, who was making a real impact up front, had to come off through injury.
The second half began with some more attacking play from St. Joseph’s but now Bredagh’s defence was rock solid; the blocking and tackling of Fintan Quinn was outstanding and Michael Brown was at his formidable best; both players provided a solid bedrock for the midfield and set up scores for Blaney, O’Rawe, and Ronan Quinn who found the net and put his team within touching distance of a great victory. Good, confident football from Darie Comisky and Brendan Stewart gave further cause for hope, as did the coverage of John McNamee, and the pace of Chris Carson. It was not to be: St. Joseph’s fired in a goal in the dying minutes and that was the end of that.
Bredagh scorers: R. Quinn (1-3); S. Blaney (0-2); C. O’Rawe (0-2); C. McMinn (0-1)

U-12 Glenavy Tournament
Saturday 20th June 2009

U12 Blitz: St Joseph’s GAC, Glenavy, Co. Antrim

Winners: Plate Competition

Travelling from South Belfast to Glenavy (the town in Antrim that is, not the one in New Zealand) can be easier said than done. By the end of the day, however, any worries about geography, wet weather, and the disappointment of a well below average performance in the group stage were forgotten as Michael Brown lifted the plate winners’ trophy.

Ballinderry 0-05 – Bredagh 0-03
Although the boys started strongly with plenty of good, attacking football, their scores didn’t come until the second period, by which time Ballinderry had already built up a healthy three point lead (by doing all the basic things very well, it has to be said). Bredagh fought back and Conor Doran soon opened the scoring with a terrific point. Ballinderry held their ground, scoring from two frees. Despite scores from Ronan Quinn, and Conor Kelly, and a solid, competitive performance from Emmet Curran throughout, Bredagh just couldn’t match the Shamrocks on this occasion.

Glenravel 0-06 – Bredagh 0-03
This match was also a closely fought contest, with some good scores coming from Ronan Quinn and Conall Doyle, and Ryan Goldsmith who in the second period scored a point, and then moments later put away a fantastic free. However, the Glens team was much more disciplined in the first period, and with Bredagh four points behind at the break (and given that each match comprised two 7 min. periods of play) – this one was never going to be easy. That said, Glenravel scored only one point in the entire second period.

Wolf Tones (Armagh) 0-04 – Bredagh 0-02
Again, Bredagh paid heavily for a sluggish start to the match which saw them three points down at the break. That said, their opponents were in confident mood, passing and challenging for the ball more effectively than their Belfast opponents throughout the match. Bredagh’s scores came from Niall Smyth (who played well throughout the group stage, but wasn’t always supported), and Doran.

After three defeats in the group stage a somewhat dejected Bredagh squad headed to St. Clair’s Hall for some refreshments. The hospitality of the tournament hosts was second to none, and after devouring their share of sandwiches, burgers, crisps, and biscuits the boys returned to the fray, rejuvenated.

Bredagh 0-9 – Glenavy 0-0
This was a lethal display from the Bredagh team, and the home side seemed to just collapse in face of some awesome football. Conall Doyle and Killian McMinn didn’t put a foot wrong for the entire match, setting up numerous opportunities for the forward line – with McMinn also putting himself on the score-sheet. Doran was again outstanding at the front, scoring two brilliant points early in the first period. Ronan Quinn scored two, and Goldsmith secured the largest individual tally of the day with four points – all from play. There were key contributions again from Peter McManus, Darragh Comiskey, and Christy Carlin, and as the whistle blew on this one, the Glenavy players looked like they had been hit by a runaway train.

Bredagh 0-07 – Aldergrove 0-03
In the final, Bredagh found themselves up against determined opposition in the form of this Aldergrove side, who were expected to do well in the tournament, and who duly took the lead early in the match. Undeterred, the Bredagh stuck to the job in hand, and thanks to some exemplary man-marking from Pauric Woods, and Michael Brown who put together a string a excellent blocks and clearances at the back, the pendulum of success began to swing towards the Belfast team. Matthew Leggett added presence to the midfield, and Curran and Lally made some crucial interceptions. Conall O’Rawe came on in the second period and created problems for the Aldergrove back line, while Conor Kelly destroyed their midfield throughout this period of play.

Carryduff 1-10 Bredagh'A' 2-03
Sunday 7th June 2009

Earlier in the season this well-drilled Carryduff outfit had made short work of Bredagh. Indeed, as they swaggered to their positions it was obvious that the memory of that easy victory at Cherryvale was still fresh in their minds. It certainly seemed like ‘backs-against-the-wall’ time for the Belfast team, and when Carryduff opened the scoring with a point, and a fortunate goal, the scene looked set for another debacle.
Not a bit of it: despite the early score-line, Bredagh were playing well with midfield stalwarts Padraic Woods and Sean Blaney competing for (and at one stage, winning) every ball. Conall Doyle, Conor Kelly, and Brendan Stewart weren’t in the mood for squandering opportunities either and although up against a formidably physical half-back line, they found gaps, setting up goals for Conor Doran and Emmet Curran, respectively. Clearly unsettled by the speed and determination of their opponents, the home side responded with some outstanding football which resulted in a further three points (frustratingly for Bredagh – two of these came from very avoidable frees). However, the visitors soon recovered, and Niall Smyth, Michael Brown, and particularly, Ella Durkan, consistently closed down the advancing midfield. Brendan Stewart took a good score to relieve the pressure, and at the whistle there was only one point between the teams.
The second half began well for Bredagh with Smyth, Kelly, Doyle, and Woods in excellent form, while goalkeeper Conor Lally anticipated and intercepted very effectively, coming off with an ankle injury sustained during a difficult scramble –
although substitute keeper, Ryan Goldsmith, confidently held the fort for a substantial part of the half. At this point, however, Bredagh did miss some chances: a carelessly taken free, two attempts at goal when going for the point always looked the better option, gave Carryduff some breathing space and allowed them to make the most of their substitutions.
Despite some resolute defending from Conall O’Rawe, at left corner-back, and Mark McLaughlin showing good skill and presence of mind on a number of occasions, Carryduff took their scores very well. Points from Kelly and Smith ensured that Bredagh remained in contention but their opponents did look fitter and faster in those crucial closing minutes.
Overall, this was an exciting and competitive game of football, and while the better side won in the end, it was not by very much and this Bredagh team gave an indication – arguably, for the first time this season - of what they can achieve when they put their mind to it. Certainly, there’ll be no swaggering the next time these sides meet.

Bredagh: Conor Lally, Ryan Goldsmith (S), Mark McLaughlin, Conall O’Rawe, Ella Durkan, Michael Brown, Niall Smyth (0-1), Sean Blaney (C), Padraic Woods, Conall Doyle, Conor Kelly (0-1), Brendan Stewart (0-1), Conor Doran (1-0), Emmet Curran (1-0)

Bredagh'B' 0-02 Bright 5-07
Sunday 7th June 2009

This game was always going to be a tough challenge for the young U-12’B’ team against very strong and talented footballers from Bright. Nevertheless, Bredagh played with great heart and attitude for the full sixty minutes and showed some good passages play. Fintan Quinn was as tenacious as ever up front and was rewarded with a great point in the second half. There was some good movement and passing in the middle third from Christy Carlin, Darragh King, Patrick Bingham, Chris Carson and Rory McCloskey, who all worked tirelessly throughout the game. Declan McCartney had a great game in the backline as did U-10’s Brendan Gallen and Niall Shannon. A number of other U-10’s also were involved in the game, Liam Francis, Cormac O’Rawe, Darragh Curran and Joseph Blaney, who all performed well at this level. Cormac O’Rawe hit a superb point just after half-time, which was well deserved for all his hard work throughout the game. Well done to all the players for a great effort against this very strong team.

Panel and scorers: Liam Francis, Niall Shannon, Brendan Gallen, Matthew Stewart, Chris Carson, Declan McCartney, Darragh King, Patrick Bingham, Rory McCloskey, Fintan Quinn (0-01), Christy Carlin, John McNamee, Cormac O’Rawe (0-01), Pearse Woods, Daire Cumiskey, Dara Curran, Joseph Blaney

Bredagh'B' 0-03 Teconnaught 0-06
Sunday 31st May 2009

Bredagh U-12’B’ football team were very unlucky to get beaten by a strong Teconnaught team in their league clash at sunny Cherryvale on Sunday afternoon.
The first score of the game took a long time coming but it was worth waiting for as Ella Durkan scored a great point from play following a good combination with Mark McLaughlin who ran 50m from the back line to get a short pass from the 45. The remainder of the half was low scoring but the end to end football made the game great to watch. Brendan Gallen was superb in full-back and Christy Carlin had a solid performance at half-back, with both lads making it difficult for Teconnaught to get easy chances. Half-time score Bredagh 0-01 Teconnaught 0-02.
Teconnaught got the first point of the second half shortly after the restart and looked very strong in a number of areas of field with some quality footballers. However, the young Bredagh team were not to be intimidated and the introduction of substitutes Jake Carlin, Liam Francis and Daniel Leggett, who are all still at U-10 level, made a significant impact on Bredagh looking a lot more dangerous. Darragh King got a great point from play following some superb passing and support play from Conor Leggett, Fintan Quinn, Matthew Leggett, Ella Durkan and Liam Francis. This led to a purple patch for the Bredagh charges and they were very unlucky not to score more than one superb point from Daniel Leggett. Teconnaught went on to score two more points before the end of the game to leave the final score at Bredagh 0-03 Teconnaught 0-06

Team and Scorers: Conor Lally, Brendan Gallen, Mark McLaughlin, Conor Wilson, Chris Carson, Conor Leggett, Christy Carlin, Ella Durkan (0-01), Matthew Leggett, Oran O’Connor, Patrick Bingham, John McNamee, Rory McCluskey, Fintan Quinn, Darragh King (0-01). Subs (all used): Jake Carlin, Daniel Leggett (0-01), Liam Francis, Roy Chestnut

Bredagh'A' 0-8 St Paul’s 3-9
Sunday 31st May 2009
Venue: Cherryvale

This match was more closely contested than the score-line would suggest; a Bredagh side – albeit weakened by the absence of several seasoned players – was ultimately defeated by a superb spell from St Paul’s early in the second half, and brilliant goalkeeping throughout from Curtis Tohill.

The match began well for Bredagh with early scores coming from Conor Kelly, Brendan Stewart, Conall O’Rawe, and Emmet Curran. St Paul’s were never far behind, and two points and a goal at the other end kept things interesting. Bredagh continued to control much of the play, however, particularly in the midfield, and a nicely taken free from Stewart, and another point from the boot of Kelly seemed to bode well for the home side.

However, just before half-time two missed frees, a careless pass (which gifted a point to their opponents), and solid defending from St Paul’s man, Adam Carvill, denied Bredagh an opportunity to capitalise on their hard work and establish a deserved lead at the break.

Buoyed up by the mistakes of their opponents, the Holywood team started the second half with an onslaught on the Bredagh back line. Sean Tucker was particularly dangerous and often seemed unmarked, although Bredagh centre half-back, Michael Brown, did manage to stop him in his tracks on several occasions. Declan McCartney and Darragh Cumisky also worked tirelessly to halt the surge but St Paul’s now sensed victory and soon clocked up three more scores and another goal, while Bredagh’s Conor Dornan had a fine shot stopped by the seemingly unbeatable Tohill.

With the match now slipping away from them, Bredagh managed only two more points, both well-taken by Dornan, and Conall Doyle. Sean Blaney was unlucky not to get a score on more than one occasion, as was Cillian McMinn, and Niall Smyth made his presence felt. This was all too little, too late, however, and Bredagh were now paying for earlier mistakes and as the unusually hot conditions began to take their toll, St Paul’s fired in two more points and another goal.

Bredagh can take comfort from the fact that despite the absence of some key players, and up against a good side playing well, this was not a poor performance and there’s plenty to build on now as the season gets well and truly underway.

Bredagh: Peter McManus (GK), Declan McCartney, Darragh Comiskey, Cillian McMinn, Michael Brown, Niall Smyth, Sean Blaney, Conor Kelly (0-2), Conall Doyle (0-1), Brendan Stewart (0-2), Conall O’Rawe (0-1), Emmet Curran (0-1), Conor Doran (0-1).

U-12 Funday
Sunday 19th October

Thirty five Bredagh U-12 footballers had a fabulous day out last Sunday to mark the end of the season. The lads started the day with two challenge games against South Antrim team, Tir na Nog, at Randalstown. They won both games comfortably despite the South Antrim lads showing great footballing capability. The Bredagh lads played like champions moving the ball around and scoring with ease. A number of players tried out different from usual positions and performed well. Tom Doherty and Conor Francis played goalkeeper for a half each with both performing well....Stephen Young watch out! While at the other end of the field there were great performances from Patrick McCarney, who slotted over two quality points, Stephen Young at corner forward, who scored a great goal, Sean McGourty at half-forward and Ruairi Doyle in midfield.
The Tir na Nog facilities were superb and the hospitality was very welcoming, as all the Bredagh lads enjoyed the drinks and biscuits after the games.

Conor Francis takes the team through a warm up session before the game

After the games it was off to Ardclinis activity centre near Ballycastle for 3 hours of enjoyable activities, where the lads got the opportunity to do wall climbing, archery and an assault course.

Bredagh 2-11 Bryansford 2-09
Sunday 5th October 2008
Bredagh U-12 footballers earned an eagerly awaited underage football championship title for the club by defeating Bryansford in the East Down championship final replay at Teconnaught on Sunday afternoon.
A 30+ panel of players gave tremendous commitment throughout the season and this championship title was well deserved and well justified.
The game followed a similar pattern to the drawn game with Bredagh leading at half-time, Bryansford coming back half-way through the second half and Bredagh rallying late on, only this time they scored two goals which gave them the edge over the impressive Bryansford.
Conor Francis opened the scoring for Bredagh with a good point from play. Bryansford quickly cancelled out this score with a pointed free, and this became the scoring pattern throughout the first half. The game flowed from end to end with both teams displaying great footballing talent, and no obvious dominance from either team. Bredagh half-backs, Mark Patterson, Conor Costello and Sean McGourty, were all in their usual outstanding form displaying their great tenacity and ability to read the game, giving the Bredagh fans numerous sighs of relief as they blocked many Bryansford attacks and emerged with the ball out of a crowded defence.
Bredagh full-forwards, Tom Doherty, Daire McPeake and Odhran Devlin worked tirelessly to compete for the ball with the impressive Bryansford full-back line. Indeed, the next two scoring efforts came from the full-forward line, Tom Doherty shooting just wide under pressure and Daire McPeake kicked over a lovely point from play. Bryansford replied with a point to level things up again before Bredagh put a comforting flash of daylight between the teams with two great points in a row from midfielders Dominic McConville and Conor Francis. Bryansford weren't going to let the Bredagh lads get too comfortable and pointed again to leave the smallest margin between the teams. Bryansford came close to taking the lead when they worked the ball well into the Bredagh goal area, firing at close range, only to be denied by a brilliant save by goalkeeper Stephen Young. The first-half scoring was completed by Declan Stewart, who knocked over a close range free, to leave the half-time score at Bredagh 0-05 Bryansford 0-03.
Bredagh looked the sharper of the sides at the start of the second half with half-forwards Ruairi Doyle, Declan Stewart and Damien Hanrahan all getting very involved in the action, picking up breaking balls in the midfield area and running at the defence in menacing fashion. Ruairi Doyle slotted over a great point from play from mid-distance, followed by a super point from Declan Stewart who managed to kick over despite being pressured by three Bryansford defenders. Conor Kelly and Chris Ferry who both came into the full-forward line also created problems for the Bryansford defenders as they battled hard and won the ball creating a bit of panic in the Bryansford defence.
Bryansford, as tenacious as ever, reduced the deficit once again with two well pointed frees before Dominic McConville kicked over a great point with his left foot to increase the lead to three points.
As per the script last week, Bryanford seized an opportunity about ten minutes into the second half and turned the game around in dramatic fashion, rapidly scoring 1-03 in quick succession. However, Bredagh held their nerve, particularly full-backs, Donal McLaughlin, Tiarnan Curran and Alex McConaghy who never gave up despite the opposition's relentless pressure, thwarting the now buzzing full-forwards to minimise their impact during the onslaught.
The storm passed and Bredagh got back into their stride moving the ball nicely up the field to the their battling full-forward line, which won a number of close range frees. Declan Stewart, as calm as ever, made no mistake with the free-taking and tapped over three in a row to level the scores.
It was all very tense for a few minutes until Bredagh rattled in two fabulous goals in a row, first from Daire McPeake who used his stength to shake off a number of tackles and fire low past the advancing goalkeeper and second from the skilful Conor Kelly who, despite being under severe pressure from defenders, picked his spot and fired low into the bottom right hand corner of the net.
A tense period followed where Bryansford threw everything they had at the Bredagh lads scoring 1-01, however, it was too little too late as the final whistle was blown and the Bredagh team and fans cheered with great delight.

Team and scorers: Stephen Young(capt), Alex McConaghy, Tiarnan Curran, Donal McLaughlin, Sean McGourty, Conor Costello, Mark Patterson, Conor Francis (0-2), Dominic McConville(0-2), Ruairi Doyle (0-1), Declan Stewart (0-5, 4f), Damien Hanrahan, Daire McPeake (1-1), Tom Doherty, Odhran Devlin. Bredagh 0-14 Bryansford 2-08
Saturday 27th September 2008
Bredagh U-12's have to do it all again after their East Down Championship final against Bryansford ended in a draw in Ballykinlar last Saturday afternoon.
A large crowd of spectators from both clubs attended this much awaited clash, and they weren't to be disappointed with the excitement and standard of football on display. In fact, you could have been forgiven for thinking you were at an inter-county championship game, as the hour long of football served up by both teams was exceptional to say the least.
Bryansford opened the scoring with a good point after only a minute on the clock. This score was soon cancelled by Bredagh as Declan Stewart effortlessly pointed a free after Dominic McConville was fouled 20m out. Dominic McConville himself slotted over the next point after a surging run from midfield, shaking off a number of tackles en route, and striking the ball accurately over the black spot. This gave Bredagh the advantage which they held onto throughout the half as they began to show a slight dominance in the middle third of the pitch. Conor Costello worked his way up from the half-back line into shooting range only to watch his point effort come off the post and go wide. Dominic McConville got his second point after another great run to within shooting range and he made no mistake kicking the ball over the bar. Bryansford kept in touch with a good point from play, as Bredagh midfielders, Conor Francis and Dominic McConville, both saw point efforts just go wide of the upright. Declan Stewart popped over another close range free to give the Bredagh lads and their followers a two point cushion. Bryansford kept in contention with a well pointed free, as Bredagh stepped up their dominance in the middle of the park. Ruairi Doyle got the measure of his marker as he worked hard in the right half-forward position winning plentiful supply of ball but just too far out on the full size pitch to make any attempt at scoring. The very strong Bryansford full-back line gave no space to full-forwards Sean Blaney, Conor Dornan and Conor Kelly as a number of balls played through to these skilled players were intercepted and cleared back out the field. Conor Costello was full of running and got a second scoring opportunity, this time he made no mistake as he scored a great point from play. Declan Stewart finished out the first half scoring with two successive points, one from play and the other from a free, leaving the half-time score at Bredagh 0-07 Bryansford 0-04. Despite Bredaghs dominance in the first half the score reflected the strength and effectiveness of the Bryansford defence.
The second half commenced as the first half ended with ace forward Declan Stewart scoring two successive points, a great effort from play and the other from a free. The Bredagh lead was stretched to 7 points when half-back Sean McGourty scored a Brian Dooher style point, intercepting the ball in his own half, soloing half the length of the pitch and kicking over the bar with great confidence. A team of Bryansford's quality were sure to hit a purple patch and this they did after about ten minutes into the second half, scoring 2-04 on the trot giving them a 3 point lead. The Bredagh lads showed composure as they rallied again, Conor Francis kicked over a good point from play which was followed by another pointed free from Declan Stewart. A rare missed free by Declan Stewart followed and it began to look as if it was going to be Bryansford's day. Chris Ferry who came in at full-forward at half-time looked menacing for Bryansford's full back, got out in front won the ball and laid it off out wide to Conor Francis who kicked over from a tight angle, to level up the scores. Bryansford came again and worked the ball up front to knock over another point in the dying minutes of the game. However, Bredagh were not to be denied as Damien Hanranhan was brought down for a free 20m out following a great run, the ball was handed to Declan Stewart who, without a flinch, stepped up and kicked over for Bredagh in what turned out to be the last action of the game.
Team and scorers; Stephen Young(capt), Alex McConaghy, Tiarnan Curran, Donal McLaughlin, Sean McGourty (0-1), Conor Costello (0-1), Mark Patterson, Conor Francis (0-2), Dominic McConville(0-2), Ruairi Doyle, Declan Stewart (0-8, 6f), Damien Hanrahan, Sean Blaney, Conor Dornan, Conor Kelly. Bredagh 4-12 Liatroim 0-06
Sunday 14th September 2008

The Victorious U-12 Squad
Things you need to know about this picture........
- Stevie Dougal isn't a ringer, he's part of the U-12 backroom team (kit assistant)
- Sean Blaney did get his breakfast and isn't trying to eat the ball, he just happens to have 300kg on top of him
- The player obliterated by Stephen Young's enthusiastic pose is ace forward Ronan Quinn
- The player between Donal McLaughlin and Sean McGourty who can't get his head up for air is Michael Browne
......and I'm sure there's more!

Bredagh U-12 footballers left no question marks over their potential or capabilities as they put in an outstanding performance to defeat Liatroim in the ED Championship semi-final at Teconnaght on Sunday afternoon.
Following a league defeat to Liatroim earlier in the season, and the prospect of a championship final place, the Bredagh lads were not in the mood to be taken lightly.
Liatroim got the better start and looked slightly sharper in the first five minutes, but didn't manage to score despite a free well within scoring range. Bredagh quickly identified the Liatroim danger men in the midfield area and Conor Francis and Dominic McConville got to grips with their style, stifling their play by not allowing them any space.
The opening score of the game came from Conor Kelly who kicked over a point after about 5 minutes. This was quickly succeeded by two more points from Bredagh, firstly Conor Francis from play and then Declan Stewart from a free. This seemed to settle the Bredagh players as they began to move the ball around as they can do so well. Despite a point from Liatroim, Bredagh now looked more likely to increase their score, showing more imagination as they moved the ball around quickly and fluently using corner forwards Conor Kelly, Patrick McCarney, Sean Blaney and Ruiari Doyle to great effect. The diagonal balls and wide play was giving Liatroim all sorts of problems as Declan Stewart scored a nice point from play and Ruiari Doyle confidently slotted over a free from distance. Liatroim's defence was in disarray for a short time, leaving gaps at the full back position as Conor Costello lofted in a high ball from the right wing which was fisted into the back of the net by Conor Kelly. Declan Stewart added a further point before an almost similar situation to Conor Kelly's goal occurred only this time it was Odhran Devlin who was on the end of it to fist home a well deserved goal. Liatroim tried hard to score at the other end but the tenacious Bredagh full-back line of Donal McLaughlin, Alex McConaghy and Tiarnan Curran did a brilliant job in curtailing the Liatroim forwards, allowing them to score only two more points before half-time.
Bredagh started the second half with a 9 point lead knowing this was far from being insurmountable by a team of Liatroim's calibre. However, the Bredagh lads showed great resilience and maturity, playing every bit as well in the second half as they did in the first half. Although Liatroim opened the second half scoring with a point, Bredagh were soon back in scoring form as Conor Dornan scored a great point from play. This was followed by a great goal from Chris Ferry who came in at full-forward. No matter how much Liatroim tried to get into scoring positions at the other end of the field, the half-backs Mark Patterson, Conor Costello and Sean McGourty were brilliant as each of them took turns in dispossessing so many players trying to attack the Bredagh danger zone. Bredagh now began to dominate the game and grow in confidence as they attacked the Liatroim goal, Conor Kelly, Dominic McConville, Conor Francis and Ronan Quinn all got good points each from play, while Declan Stewart scored a point from a close range free. Ruairi Doyle got goal number 4 for Bredagh with a great shot from distance which lobbed the keeper and ended up in the back of the net. Liatroim managed 2 more points in the second half, leaving the final score at Bredagh 4-12 Liatroim 0-06.
Overall this was a tremendous peformance as every Bredagh player, including substitutes, demonstrated great strength, fearlessness and desire to win. This coupled with great teamwork, support and a range of players showing ability to score made it a great performance to watch by all the coaches and travelling Bredagh fans.

Downpatrick 1-06 Bredagh 4-09
Sunday 31st August 2008
East Down Championship Quarter Final

The Bredagh U-12 footballers displayed great character in defeating a tough Downpatrick team on Sunday afternoon. Having been beaten by Bredagh twice in the league earlier this year, Downpatrick were out to avenge these earlier defeats and looked menacing from the start.
Both teams traded scores in the first half, as the game flowed from end to end with entertaining football from both teams. Declan Stewart scored 3 points from frees and Conor Dornan scored a great point from play. However, a well taken goal from tough corner forward, Mark McLaughlin, levelled the scores at 1-04 to 1-04 going into the interval. At this stage, Bredagh knew that their earlier wins over Downpatrick were no measure for what they were facing in the competitive arena of championship football.
The Bredagh lads had to raise their game, which they did to great effect in the second half as experienced campaigners Dominic McConville, Conor Francis, Conor Costello and Damian Hanrahan got more involved to lift the team. Declan Stewart opened the second half scoring with a great point from play. This was followed by two goals in a row from Conor Francis, involving great passing and support play with Conor Costello and Sean Blaney. Declan Stewart added a fourth goal for Bredagh shortly afterwards, which left a margin of 10 points between the teams. Downpatrick got frustrated and a bit ragged as they struggled to score. Sean McGourty, Donal McLaughlin and Tiarnan Curran in the Bredagh defence bravely broke down attack after attack and, Damian Hanrahan played out of his skin as he battled for every ball down the right hand side. Downpatrick only managed to score two points in the second half as a result of the resilient performance by the Bredagh defence. Declan Stewart slotted over two more points and Conor Costello got a point before the final whistle, sealing a great win for the Bredagh lads.
Well done to all the players involved for this fantastic performance

Saul 2-05 Bredagh 3-18
Sunday 24th August 2008
First round U-12 East Down Championship

A strong panel of 23 under 12s travelled to Saul for this first round championship encounter, hoping to put behind a few disappointing defeats in the league campaign.
With a light breeze behind their backs, Bredagh started the sharper of the two sides and within seconds from the start Sean Blaney accurately found the target with a well taken point from play. From the kick out, Bredagh won the ball in the midfield area and nicely worked the ball through a series of quick simple passes to Declan Stewart who effortlessly slotted over the bar. This became a familiar sight in the first 15 minutes of the game as Bredagh dominated, winning the Saul kick outs through great fielding in the midfield and half-forward sectors and quickly moving the ball to the scoring zone. Declan Stewart was in his usual confident scoring form as he added a further 1-07 during this Bredagh period of domination. Also, Dominic McConville scored a nice point and Cillian McMinn, who came in at centre-forward, hit the back of the net with a great goal.
With a lead of 2-09, the Bredagh lads began to relax a bit and were caught with two fast flowing Saul moves which culminated in a goal and a point. There could have been a further goal only for Bredagh to be saved by the post.
The Bredagh coaches were glad to hear the half-time whistle to give them an opportunity to refocus the team as Saul began to build in confidence towards the end of the half.
Saul started the second half with the great fluency with which they ended the first half and scored three successive points. Declan Stewart settled the Bredagh jitters momentarily with a well taken point. However, Saul rallied again scoring 1-01 on the trot, leaving the scoreline at Bredagh 2-10 Saul 2-05, all to play for.
Bredagh awakened again through good determination in the half-back line of Conor Costello, Sean McGourty and Mark Patterson, who all kept cool heads to steady the team. The Bredagh lads got back into the game, with a magnificent performance up front by Conor Dornan, who showed great determination and was rewarded with 1-3, all of which were splendid scores. Conor Kelly also showed his skill and speed by scoring a nice point from play. But the sharp shooter who did the lions share of the damage in the first half, Declan Stewart, scored 4 more points to seal a deserved victory.

Castlewellan Tournament
Saturday 9th August 2008
Bredagh U-12 boys footballers participated, along with fifteen other teams, in a very well organised 9-a-side tournament at St Malachys Park, Castlewellan. Torrential rain in Cherryvale in the morning had everyone thinking the tournament would be cancelled however, when we arrived in Castlewellan the rain had stopped and the weather was perfect for the rest of the day.

Bredagh were drawn in a tough group along with Bryansford, Bright and Loughinisland, finishing in third position with 1 win and 2 defeats.
This position put Bredagh through to the quarter-final of the shield competition against Annaclone. They won this encounter comfortably with a great display of ruthless scoring.
Next up in the semi-final were local rivals Carryduff, who had already beaten them twice this season in the league. The Bredagh lads raised their game in this tense affair and broke Carryduffs resolve with a magnificent performance from all the players to win by 5 points.
The final was against a very strong Laitroim team and the Bredagh lads battled hard and were very unlucky to lose by 2 points in a game they could have won.

Kilcoo 4-11 Bredagh 1-11
Sunday 27th July 2008
Bredagh U-12's faced a tough challenge on Sunday afternoon at Kilcoo in very hot muggy weather. The holiday season took it's toll as the squad of 14 players had to be supplemented with 2 U-10's to make up the numbers. Nevertheless, the Bredagh lads went out and put in a reasonable performance against very strong opposition who were looking to to avenge their defeat at Cherryvale earlier in the season.
The first half was a high scoring affair as both teams traded scores throughout the 30 minutes. Conor Kelly was superb in the full forward line for Bredagh, firstly hitting the back of the net with a superb volley, and then knocking over 5 points, 4 of which were skilfully taken from play. Further points for Bredagh were scored in the first half by Dominic McConville, Conor Francis, Ruairi Doyle(free) and Ronan Quinn(free), leaving the half-time score at Bredagh 1-9 Kilcoo 4-4.
The second half didn't produce as many scores as both teams tired and the game got a bit scrappy in the sweltering conditions. Kilcoo played with a gentle breeze behind them which gave them an advantage, knocking over 7 points as Bredagh only managed 2 points for the entire half. Both Bredagh points came from sharp shooting forwards, Conor Kelly and Ronan Quinn.
Despite the defeat, the Bredagh lads did extremely well in the conditions and the game provided the necessary match practice after the holiday break.
Next up is Castlewellan on Sunday 3rd August at Cherryvale.

Team: Odhran Devlin, Patrick McCarney, Alex McConaghy, Michael Browne, Sean McGourty, Conor Costelloe, Stephen Young, Conor Francis, Dominic McConville, Ruairi Doyle, Sean Blaney, Conor Dornan, Conor Kelly, Ronan Quinn, Conal Doyle and Liam Francis

Bredagh 4-4 St. Pauls 5-6
Sunday 6th July
The U-12 footballers had an enjoyable challenge game against St. Pauls, Holywood, on Sunday morning at Cherryvale. Even the rain didn't stop both teams playing some great football as a total of 9 goals were scored by both teams.
The goals for Bredagh were well taken by young Conor Kelly and Liam Francis, and from the more experienced Ruairi Doyle and Tiarnan Curran. Bredagh's tally also included four points, 2 great points from Ronan Quinn and a point each for Sean McGourty and Conor Kelly.
This game provided an opportunity for some of the younger members of the squad, and some U-10's, to demonstrate their capabilities, and they didn't disappoint as they played fabulous football and kept it very tight against a strong St Paul's team. Well done to all the players for a great performance.
Team: Peter McManus, Emmet Curran, Tiarnan Curran, Patrick McCarney, Alex McConaghy, Michael Browne, Donal McLaughlin, Ronan Quinn, Sean McGourty, Conor Kelly, Ruairi Doyle, Cillian McMinn, Conal Doyle, Mathew Leggett, Sean Lyttle, Liam Francis and Conor Lally

Downpatrick 1-7 Bredagh 3-11
Sunday 22nd June 2008
Bredagh U-12 footballers defeated a good Downpatrick team at Downpatrick on Sunday afternoon.
The Bredagh lads played good football from the start with plenty of free flowing moves and support play, working well as a team. A number of players were trialled in different positions from their normal starting positions and they performed well. Alex McConaghy had a great game in the full back line, showing great strength and tackling ability. Tom Doherty started in the half back line and did a great job in this position, displaying passing skills and support play. Chris Ferry played in midfield and took to the task without any problems, while Ryan Goldsmith showed that he is more than a back, performing well in the half forward line.
Overall this was a comfortable win for Bredagh as they looked in control throughout the game. Well done to all the players and keep up the good work.
Panel and Scorers:Stephen Young, Alex McConaghy, Tiarnan Curran, Donal McLaughlin, Damien Hanrahan, Conor Francis (0-2), Tom Doherty (0-1), Chris Ferry (1-0), Dominic McConville, Ruairi Doyle (0-3), Declan Stewart (0-3), Ryan Goldsmith, Sean Blaney (0-1), Daire McPeake (1-1), Conor Kelly (1-0), Ronan Quinn, Owen Acton, Michael Browne, Peter McManus, Conor leggett, Niall Smyth, Cillian McMinn, Patrick McCarney, Daire Cumiskey

Bredagh 2-4 Carryduff 2-14
Sunday 15th June 2008
The U-12 footballers came up against an impressive Carryduff team in their East Down league clash on Sunday afternoon in Cherryvale.
Carryduff looked the sharper team right from the off as they got out in front of their markers and moved the ball quickly and accurately to each other. Bredagh struggled to get the ball out of their own half for a long period as Carryduff took score after score. They notched up 1-8 on the trot, despite the best efforts of Bredagh backs Tiarnan Curran, Donal McLaughlin and Thomas Gallen. Stephen Young was as strong in nets as he has been all season and kept the score board reasonably respectable. Bredagh managed to work the ball up to the forwards on two occassions before the end of the half and were rewarded with two good goals, first from Sean Blaney and then from Daire McPeake. Carryduff pointed again before the end of the half making the half time scoreline Bredagh 2-0 Carryduff 1-9.
This was always going to be difficult for Bredagh to come back and was worsened as Carryduff quickly added 2-2 to their tally shortly after the break.
In fairness to the Bredagh lads they didn't give up despite the scoreline and hard work in the middle third from Conor Francis, Dominic McConville and Declan Stewart managed to get things going Bredaghs way for a short period. During this period two good points were converted, first by Tom Doherty and then by Dominic McConville. Ruairi Doyle and Declan Stewart added two further points from well taken frees. However, Carryduff had the last say knocking over three more points before the final whistle.
Well done to Carryduff for this impressive display of football. Regardless of the result, the players and coaches got a wake up call at this game, having won three easy games in a row, Carryduff is the team Bredagh need to be aspiring to win against. Plenty of hard work to be done at training over the next few weeks and it's important that everyone turns up and takes seriously the drills and advice in order to improve. Sean Blaney keeps the pressure on his marker Conor Dornan displaying strength and determination Tom Doherty's brother, Finn, helps line out the pitch or is he just fed up watching Carryduff get all the scores!

Bryansford 0-7 Bredagh 4-4
Sunday 25th May 2008
Bredagh U-12’s continued with their recent good form defeating Bryansford at Newcastle on Sunday afternoon. Bryansford, playing with the strong breeze in the first half, got off to a better start knocking over two good points from play. The Bredagh nerves were settled when Conor Francis pulled one back from a free kick, after Declan Stewart was fouled about 25m out from goal. Bryansford went on the attack again and scored another point, as the Bredagh lads started to adapt to the effects of the breeze. A lovely passing move resulted in Declan Stewart getting the ball in the danger zone and he smashed into the bottom corner of the net to give Bredagh the lead. Bryansford replied with another point but this was followed by another fast passing move that gave Declan Stewart a second goal scoring opportunity which he made no mistake and fired the ball past the Bryansford keeper into the back of the net. After another Bryansford point, star forward Declan Stewart got a third goal scoring opportunity which he rocketed past the keeper only to see it rebound off the crossbar. Full forward Daire mcPeake shook off his marker, who was twice his height, and pounced on the rebounded ball, netting into the top corner with a classy strike. The Bredagh keeper, Stephen Young, and full back line of Michael Browne, Tiarnan Curran and Donal McLaughlin did a superb job in wearing down the Bryansford forwards as they attempted to take advantage of the breeze before the end of the half. Bredagh led at half time by 3-1 to 0-5.
Bryansford opened the scoring in the second half with a point from play. The Bredagh lads struggled with the advantage of the breeze at the start of the second half as they kicked a number of wides from play. However, it was inevitable that the scores would come as forwards Sean Blaney, Conor Dornan, Conor Kelly and Ronan Quinn piled on the pressure with numerous flashes of great attacking play which led to two frees close to the Bryansford goal. Declan Stewart confidently struck the ball over the bar on both occasions to increase the Bredagh lead. The score of the game came from Daire McPeake as he blasted home his second goal in a crowded goal mouth, picking his spot and making no mistake as the Bryansford keeper could only look on. Declan Stewart wrapped up the scoring for Bredagh with a well taken point from play. Final score Bredagh 4-4 Bryansford 0-7.
This was another great performance by the U-12’s giving them their third win in succession. Well done to all the players who participated. There’s now a lot of competition for places as a number of the younger players have proven their capability at this level. Therefore, it’s very important that any player wishing to get their name on the starting line up in future games demonstrates a positive attitude at training over the forthcoming weekends.

Castlewellan 3-2 Bredagh 2-15
Sunday 18th May 2008

U-12 Squad at Cerryvale before leaving for Castlewellan

The Bredagh U-12 squad travelled to Castlewellan on sunny Sunday morning to try and continue their recent good form. This they did with a convincing win and, into the bargain, lead coach Peadar Doyle did a remarkable job managing to play all of the 29 panel within the 2 x 25 minute periods.
Bredagh took command early on in the first half and scored 8 points before Castlewellan got their name on the score sheet. The bredagh points came from Declan Stewart (0-1), Conor Francis (0-1), Dominic McConville (0-2), Conor Costelloe (0-1), Conor Kelly (0-1) and Ruairi Doyle (0-2, 2 frees). Castlewellan scored 1-1 towards the end of the half and Declan Stewart got another point before the half-time whistle leaving the score at 0-9 to 1-1 going into the interval. However, the gap could have been much greater as Bredagh kicked 12 wides from scorable positions.
Bredagh started the second half with 4 points in a row from Chris Ferry (0-1), Dominic McConville (0-2) and Conor Francis (0-1). Castlewellan replied with 1-1 before Chris Ferry, normally a goalkeeper/defender, displayed his skills at the other end of the field by netting a well taken goal. Castlewellan produced another goal, but this was followed by a great goal from Conor Legget, his second in as many games. Bredagh finished out the game with points from Declan Stewart and Chris Ferry for a final scoreline of 2-15 to 3-2.
This was another fine performance by the U-12's as they reach the halfway point in the league. Today demonstrated the strength within the squad as a number of the younger players got an opportunity to show their ability, most notably Padraic Woods, Ronan Quinn and Conor Guerin. Well done to all the players involved for displaying good teamwork and a positive attitude.

Panel and Scorers: Stephen Young, Peter McManus, Michael Browne, Ryan Goldsmith, Tiarnan Curran, Donal McLaughlin, Mark Patterson, Conor Costelloe (0-1), Sean McGourty, Conor Francis (0-2), Dominic McConville (0-4), Declan Stewart (0-3), Ruairi Doyle (0-2), Conor Kelly (0-1), Tom Doherty, Cillian McMinn, Ronan Quinn, Conor Legget (1-0) Alex McConaghy, Damian Hanrahan, Chris Ferry (1-2), Patrick McCarney, Niall Smyth, Conor Dornan, Conor Guerin, Padraic Woods, Mark McLaughlin, Sean Blaney, Conor Wilson

Bredagh 3-17 Kilcoo 1-6
Sunday 11th May 2008
A glorious sunny afternoon at Cherryvale provided a fitting atmosphere for an outstanding performance by the U-12’s against the mighty Kilcoo. The 30 strong Bredagh panel provided difficulty for the coaches in selecting a team with so many talented players to choose from.
Conor Francis opened the scoring with a point from play following a Damian Hanrahan effort just going wide of the upright. Kilcoo levelled things with a point 2 minutes later, but this was as close as they got for the remainder of the game as the Bredagh lads turned on the style and displayed their footballing ability and teamwork to the highest standard. The Bredagh full-forward line showed their accuracy in front of goal knocking over four points on the trot, Conor Kelly (0-2), Tom Doherty (0-1) and Conor Dornan (0-1). A further point was added by Dominic McConville before the Kilcoo lads found their shooting boots again getting two points against the run of play. The full-back line of Donal McLaughlin, Michael Browne and Ryan Goldsmith were in no mood to give the Kilcoo forwards any space as they pressured them into making mistakes on the ball and cleared their lines with an air of confidence and control. Bredagh were moving the ball fluently around the field and this was exemplified as Conor Francis netted into the top corner of the Kilcoo goal after a fast flowing move down the left hand side involving Dominic McConville and Ruairi Doyle. Conor followed up with a point a few minutes later leaving the Kilcoo lads 1-4 behind. At the other end of the field a contender for save of the season came from Stephen Young who managed to turn the ball just past the outside of the post following a low drive from point blank range. The umpire was just reaching down to lift the green flag as the ball rolled past his feet leaving a stunned look on his face. Dominic McConville fired over another point before half-time, leaving a scoreline of 1-8 to 0-3 at the interval.
Dominic continued where he left off in the first half, knocking over 2 more points shortly after the restart. At this stage the Bredagh lads were in full flow and looked more like the Kerry team in last years All-Ireland final. Their football was a joy to watch as they scored for fun notching up a further 2-7 before the final whistle, with scores from Sean Blaney (0-1), Damien Hanrahan (0-3), Conor Francis (0-3), Ruairi Doyle (1-0) and Conor Legget (1-0). Kilcoo had a late rally scoring 1-3 but it was too little too late, as the Bredagh lads stormed to a final score of 3-17 to 1-6.
This game demonstrated without doubt the capabilities of this great U-12 team, displaying strength and flair all over the field. The technical ability and experience of Dominic McConville, Conor Francis, Ruairi Doyle and Damien Hanrahan was supplemented by the younger lad’s fearlessness, agility and raw talent. Most notable were half-backs, Ryan Noble-Walker and Sean McGourty who displayed an abundance of footballing talent and determination which provided excellent viewing for all the supporters who keenly watched the game.
Well done to all the players for this great performance and don’t forget training as usual on Friday nights at 6.30pm

Panel and Scorers: Stephen Young, Peter McManus, Ryan Goldsmith, Thomas Gallen, Donal McLaughlin, Michael Browne, Ryan Noble-Walker, Sean McGourty, Tiarnan Curran, Conor Francis (1-5), Dominic McConville (0-4), Sean Blaney (0-1), Ruairi Doyle (1-0), Damian Hanrahan (0-3), Conor Kelly (0-2), Tom Doherty (0-1), Conor Dornan (0-1), Conor Legget (1-0), Alex McConaghy, Mark Patterson, Daire McPeake, Chris Ferry, Eoin Acton, Odhran Devlin, Niall Smyth, Daire Cumiskey, Ronan Quinn, Mark McLaughlin, Conor Wilson, Padraic Woods.

Laitroim 6-11 Bredagh 2-14
Sunday 4th May 2008
Bredagh U-12’s played their 4th league fixture of the season away to Laitroim in what turned out to be a high scoring and highly charged affair.
Laitroim came out of the starting blocks very quickly showing hunger and determination and were rewarded with a goal after 3 minutes of play. Declan Stewart soon settled the Bredagh nerves as he fired over the bar to give the away side their first point. Laitroim replied with 3 points in a row before Declan Stewart got his and Bredaghs second point. This was followed by an unfortunate sending off incident in which Conor Francis was shown the red card following an altercation with his midfield counterpart. This put Bredagh on the back foot for a while as they tried to regroup and Laitroim scored 1-3 on the trot. However, Bredagh got to grips with the situation as the whole team dug deep and began to show great spirit and determination scoring 2-2 before the end of the half with scores from Declan Stewart 0-2, Conor Dornan 1-0 and Sean Blaney 1-0, leaving the half time score at Laitroim 2-6 Bredagh 2-4.
Bredagh commenced the second half as the stronger team as they displayed footballing skills of the highest order particularly forwards Sean Blaney, Ruairi Doyle, Declan Stewart, Ryan Noble-Walker, Daire McPeake and Stephen Young. The sustained period of pressure from Bredagh resulted in 9 points without reply from Laitroim, with scores coming from Stephen Young 0-2, Ruairi Doyle 0-2, Declan Stewart 0-3, Ryan Noble-Walker 0-1 and Conor Costelloe 0-1. This purple patch from Bredagh was amongst the best football seen from a Bredagh team this season, as the lads fearlessly battled for and won the ball against strong opposition players. Particularly notable were the younger U-12’s Sean Blaney, Ryan Noble-Walker, Brendan Stewart, Conor Wilson, Michael Browne, Padraic Woods and Conor Dornan. Unfortunately, 14 man Bredagh were unable to sustain the pressure and eventually Laitroim got back into the game as the Bredagh backs worked hard to minimise the impact with Ryan Goldsmith, Michael Browne, Eoin Acton, Damien Hanrahan, star mid-fielder Conor Costelloe and goalkeeper Odhran Devlin showing great resilience and determination. Bredagh got one final point before the end of the game by sharp-shooter Declan Stewart, bringing his tally for the game to 0-8.
Well done to the entire team for this great performance, regardless of the scoreline. The U-12 squad is 30 players strong this year and today demonstrated the strength within the panel as some regular starters were not available. Competition for starting places is going to be tough for the rest of the season and the players regularly turning up for training and showing good attitude are the players who will win through.

Breagh 5-7 Downpatrick 1-8
Sunday 27th April 2008

Bredagh U-12’s put on a fabulous display of determination, resolve and footballing skills to overcome Downpatrick on Sunday afternoon in sun-drenched Cherryvale Park.
Downpatrick opened the scoring with a point after 5 minutes but this was soon cancelled out as Dominic McConville slotted over bar with a well taken point. Soon after the Downpatrick lads moved into gear and began to dominate play, scoring 1-2 on the trot in a 10 minute period which unsettled Bredagh. The only chance for Bredagh during this period was an effort from Tom Doherty which went just wide of the upright. The Bredagh lads dug deep and began to control the Downpatrick play-makers in the middle of the field, with Dominic McConville, Conor Costelloe and Conor Francis all battling and working hard to take control. Bredagh soon got back in touch scoring 1-2, a goal and a point from Declan Stewart and a point from Conor Kelly. It could have been more as Tom Doherty was unfortunate to fire wide again with a great effort from distance. The game flowed from end to end for the remainder of the first half with good football from both teams and very intriguing to watch. Before the end of the half, Downpatrick scored 2 more points and Bredagh got 1-1. The Bredagh scores came from Declan Stewart 0-1 and Daire McPeake 1-0. Half-time score Bredagh 2-4 Downpatrick 1-5.
Shortly after the restart Eoin Acton collected the ball about 25m out, weaved through the defence and fired narrowly wide. Downpatrick drew first blood of the half with a point after 2 minutes. A 10 minute period followed with no scores as each team worked hard to create openings. The Bredagh defence of Mark Patterson, Ryan Goldsmith, Donal McLaughlin and goalkeeper Chris Ferry remained resolute as Downpatrick struggled to penetrate the line. Whilst half-forwards Ruairi Doyle, Sean McGourty and Declan Stewart were busy running and moving giving their midfield targets for possession. Bredagh began to look as if they were getting on top following a well pointed 45 from Conor Francis. This was closely followed by a point from Damian Hanrahan and a point from Dominic McConville from a 20m free. Downpatrick got a point back but it was all too obvious at this stage that the Bredagh lads were on top. Downpatrick lost their composure as Bredagh piled on the pressure and were rewarded with a fisted goal from Daire McPeake. Downpatrick managed one more point with a close range free, but ace forward Daire McPeake got into goal scoring mood and fisted 2 more goals to the back of the net to take his tally to 4-0. Bredagh should have had more as Dominic McConville, Sean McGourty and Declan Stewart were unlucky to see their point efforts going wide. Final score Bredagh 5-7 Downpatrick 1-8.
This was a superb performance from the Bredagh U-12 team as they turned out in strength with a panel of 30 players. The coaches used as many subs as possible but it was unfortunate that not all got a taste of the action. But well done to all the panel for their behaviour and attitude throughout the game.
Remember, training on Friday night @ 6.30pm. Next match away to Liatroim on Sunday 4th May. Keep an eye on the website for u-12 notices

Carryduff 6-6 Bredagh 1-5
Sunday 20th April 2008

Bredagh U-12 footballers travelled to Carryduff on Sunday to play their second league game of the season.
The Bredagh lads got off to a great start with a goal from Declan Stewart after 1 minute, catching Carryduff by surprise. This seemed to push Carryduff into gear as they made sure Bredagh didn’t capitalise on their early score by marking their men very tight and not allowing Bredagh any space. Carryduff soon got off their mark and scored 1-3 without reply from Bredagh. The Bredagh lads worked hard in all areas of the pitch during this purple patch for Carryduff, particulary the back line of Ryan Goldsmith, Tiarnan Curran, Thomas Gallen and Donal McLaughlin who fought hard to contain the Carryduff forwards. Declan Stewart popped up again after 15 minutes to slot over a point after a fast worked ball out of defence by Bredagh. However, it began to look like it wasn’t going to be Bredagh’s day as Carryduff replied with 2-1 in succession, leaving the Bredagh lads slightly dismayed. Before the end of the half Dominic McConville fired over a point after another great fast moving passing game from defence, leaving the half-time score at Bredagh 1-2 Carryduff 3-4.
Bredagh resumed the second half with enthusiasm, looking to make up the defecit in the scoreline, but were caught out early on by 2 easy goals and a further point. The lads didn’t give up at this stage and continued to work hard to stay in the game. They were rewarded with a 10 minute period of sustained pressure against the home side, with Ruairi Doyle, Tom Doherty and Damian Hanrahan all scoring a point each, Declan Stewart and Conor Francis hitting the bar, and shots from Tom Doherty, Dominic McConville and Damian Hanrahan just going wide of the uprights. Carryduff finished off the game with a goal and a point, leaving a final scoreline of 6-6 to 1-5.
This was a tough game against a very good team and it’s important that lessons are learned from this game. There was plenty of inspirational football from the Bredagh lads but it needs to be sustained for longer periods throughout the game. Well done to all the players who took part and don’t forget, training next Friday night at 6.30pm in Cherryvale.

Panel and scorers: Peter McManus, Ryan Goldsmith, Donal McLaughlin, Daire Cumiskey, Thomas Gallen, Ronan Quinn, Pauric Woods, Alex McConaghy, Daire McPeake, Tiarnan Curran, Conor Francis, Rory Hughes, Ruairi Doyle (0-1), Stephen Young, Dominic McConville (0-1), Chris Ferry, Eoin Acton, Christy Carlin, Conor Leggett, Odhran Devlin, Declan Stewart (1-1), Damian Hanrahan (0-1), Tom Doherty (0-1)

U12 Training Sunday 13th April 2008

Bredagh 1-6 Bryansford 1-6
Sunday 6th April 2008
Bredagh played Bryansford at Cherryvale in their first match of
the 2008 East Down U12 league. Under very windy, and cold conditions both
teams played some great football and a score of 1-6 each at the final
whistle was a fair reflection of a competitively contested game by two
evenly matched teams. Bryansford, playing wind assistance, pushed hard in
the first half for scores and gradually built up a lead to finish the half
with a comfortable gap of 1-3 to 0-0. Although behind on the score board, the first half produced some great
defensive work by the Bredagh lads and particularly the full back line and
keeper, and captain for the day, Peter McManus. From the second half throw-in the Bredagh lads played a much more attacking game and were
soon rewarded with points from Tom Doherty, Dominic McConville and Conor Kelly and a
goal from Ruairi Doyle got Bredagh back on level terms. Conor Kelly converted
a great long range free kick to put Bredagh ahead but the Brysonford lads
immediately responded to level things at 1-4 each. The last 10 minutes of the game
produced some great attacking and exciting football with both teams hitting
two more points, the Bredagh points coming from the foot of "man of the
match" Dominic McConville. Although disappointed not to have secured a home
victory the Bredagh lads can be pleased with their performance and are looking forward to the next fixture.

Team: Peter MCManus, Michael Brown, Ryan Goldsmith, Donal McLaughlin, Ronan
Quinn, Conor Francis, Tom Gallen, Dominic McConville, Stephen Young, Sean
Blaney, Ruairi Doyle, Sean McGourty, Connor Doran, Tom Doherty, Conor Kelly

Substitutions used: Odhran Devlin, Damien Hanrahan, Chris Ferry, Connor
Wilson, Connor Leggett

A third period of 10 minutes each way was also played. Again this was a
keenly contested encounter but this time Bredagh ran out comfortable
winners 2-5 to 0-3. Many good performances all over the pitch but
particularly from Daire Comiskey, Patrick McCarney, Odhran Devlin, debutante
Ruairi Hughes, Owen Acton and the Stewart brothers Brendan and Declan who
accounted for both the Bredagh goals.

Bredagh 1-8 St Brigids 2-1
Sunday 30th March 2008
The U-12's travelled to St Brigids for this challenge game in advance of their league campaign which commences next Sunday 6th April 2008.
The Bredagh lads put on an impressive display of football which provided great entertainment for the fans and coaches on what turned out to be a lovely sunny morning.
The first half was a low scoring affair with St Brigids leading 1-1 to 0-3 at half-time. The scores for Bredagh came from Conor Kelly, Tom Doherty and Ruari Doyle, all from play following great flowing football built up from the back line. The team played a short passing game which troubled the opposition, with the Bredagh lads all working hard to support each other as they moved the ball with great fluency from defence into midfield and on to the forward line.
St Brigids could have been further ahead in the first half only for a 'man of the match' display from goalkeeper Peter McManus. Peter provided a very safe pair of hands in nets and on two occasions saved courageously from point blank range.
Bredagh continued in the second half with their simple short passing game and were rewarded with a goal and five more points, Ruari Doyle(1-0), Dominic McConville(0-2), Chris Ferry, Mark McLaughlin and Conor Francis.
St Brigids only managed one score in the second half, as they struggled with Bredaghs style of football, and found it difficult to get the ball past the resilient Peter McManus.
Overall this was a great performance by all the players involved and provides a great confidence boost in advance of the East Down league. Well done to all the players and keep up the good work.
Panel and Scorers: Peter McManus, Stephen Young, Tom Doherty (0-1), Ruairi Doyle (1-1), Mark Patterson, Dominic McConville (0-2), Donal McLaughlin, Conor Francis (0-1), Thomas Gallen, Chris Ferry (0-1), Patrick McCarney, Eoin Acton, Odhran Devlin, Sean McGourty, Tiernan Curran, Conor Dornan, Ryan Goldsmith, Padraic Woods, Conor Kelly (0-1), Ronan Quinn, Michael Browne, Mark McLaughlin (0-1), Ryan Noble-Walker, Sean Blaney, Conor Wilson, Conor Guerin.

Bredagh 0-10 Downpatrick 1-6
Sunday 12th August 2007
This was the most impressive performance by the Bredagh U-12's this season in what was a very exciting match at Downpatrick. The bredagh lads battled hard right from the throw-in and it wasn't long before Niall Fitzpatrick scored a point to put Bredagh in front. This point was closely followed by a second point from a well taken free by Niall Kelly, giving Bredagh the ideal start. It was end to end football for the rest of the first half with further points for Bredagh from Thomas Gallen, Niall Kelly, Niall Fitzpatrick and Declan Stewart. The half time score was Bredagh 0-6 Downpatrick 0-4.
Downpatrick resumed the second half with an early goal which put Bredagh slightly on the back foot but the lads coped very well with the pressure, particularly Seamus McCloskey in goals and Patrick McLaughlin at centre back. Both these lads foiled numerous goal attempts by the Downpatrick team when they were in the ascendancy. Bredagh rallied with inspirational play by the seasoned stalwart, Caolan Schablie, who was rewarded with the winning point close to the finish. Bredagh got three more points in the second half from Niall Fitzpatrick, Odhran Devlin and Declan Stewart.
A great performance all round by the Bredagh team, well done to all who played.

Glenavy Tournament
Saturday August 11th 2007

Bredagh participated, along with 11 other teams, in a very well organised tournament at Glenavy on Saturday morning. There were a few showers but the weather was generally good and the Glenavy organisers were well prepared no matter what the conditions were like. The Bredagh lads came up against very strong opposition in the group stages. Their first match was against the hosts Glenavy who were just too strong for the Bredagh challenge and Glenavy won easily in the end. Bredagh woke up after their initial defeat and played Derrytresk in their second game, beating them convincingly. This gave them a confidence boost for their third and last group game against a well fancied Aghagallon team. This turned out to be a very close and exciting encounter, with Aghagallon taking the points in the end winning 0-5 to 0-3. Bredagh finished third in their group which put them through to the semi-final of the Sheild competition. They came up against a very good Clann Eireann team and just didn't have enough strength to claw back a significant lead built up by Clann Eireann from the early stages of the match.
An enjoyable day out was had by all and well done to Glenavy for a very well run event.
Team and Scorers
Seamus McCloskey, Patrick McLaughlin, Daniel McGrenaghan, Caolan Schablie(0-3), Niall Fitzpatrick(0-5), Conor Francis(0-1), Ronan Smith, Dominic McConville(0-1), Conal Gormley, Declan Stewart(0-3), Donal McLoughlin, Odhran Devlin(0-2), Niall Kelly(0-5)

Bredagh 2- 2 Saul 2-8
Sunday 29th July 2007
In sunny but blustery conditions Bredagh lost out to Saul in Saul on Sunday
past. Bredagh lead at half time 2-1 to 0-3 thanks to goals from Niall kelly
and Nicky McCafferty. Playing with a strong breeze on their backs Bredagh
should have held a much greater advantage but due to some rather wayward
shooting the boys went into half time with a slender four point lead which
didn't reflect the dominance of the Bredagh lads play.

Bredagh only scored one point from play in the second half from the boot of
Mark Patterson as Saul made much more effective use of the srong crossfield
breeze. Saul went on to record a deserved 2-8 to 2-2 victory. Bredagh put up
a determined effort but greater accuracy from the forwards will be required
for the next encounter with Carryduff on Sunday 5th August. Best for Bredagh
on the day was Ronan Smyth who give a great disciplined defensive display.

Bredagh 1-5 Kilcoo 0-10
Sunday 22nd July
Bredagh U-12's were narrowly defeated by an impressive Kilcoo team on a hot Sunday afternoon at Cherryvale.
Kilcoo dominated play in the first half and led at the interval by 5 points to 2, with the Bredagh points coming from Oisin Smylie and Odhran Devlin. Kilcoo could have had a more substantive lead only for very good defending by the Bredagh lads, most notably James Durkan and Caolan Schablie.
The second half produced a more impressive Bredagh display and the team played with enthusiasm, flair and belief, assumedly following an inspirational team talk by lead coach Nicky McCafferty during the break!
Odhran Devlin gave a man of the match performance up front scoring the only goal of the game after picking up a breaking ball from an Oisin Smylie shot and blasting it to the back of the net. Odhran scored another great point from play later in the game to add to his tally. The best point of the day came from Lorcan Smylie after a surging run from defence, picking up the ball about 30 metres out from goal, broke through the stalwart Kilcoo defence and confidently knocked over an impressive point. Shortly afterwards Lorcan's brother, Oisin, added a further point for Bredagh.
Other great performances for Bredagh were Tiarnan Curran (goalkeeper), Stephen Young, Ruari Doyle and Nicky McCafferty.
Well done to all the players for a great team performance

Bredagh 0-12 Bryansford 0-7
Sunday 24th June 2007
Bredagh U-12 footballers travelled to Bryansford on a damp Sunday morning to play this important league game. However, the weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the Bredagh lads as they fielded a full strength team. Bredagh hit the ground running right from the throw-in with Niall Fitzpatrick and Conor Francis working hard in midfield. Up front, Declan Stewart gave the Bryansford defence all sorts of problems twisting, turning and running with the ball. Declan opened the scoring for Bredagh with a well taken point from play. Bryansford replied with a point shortly after to level the scores but it wasn’t long before Bredagh were in front again with a point from Conal Gormley. Conal’s performance was superb, winning most balls that were played through to the full forward line, despite being marked by the biggest player on the pitch! Conal added another point to his tally, following a point from a free from Niall Fitzpatrick. Bryansford replied with two points, but this is as close as they got as Declan Stewart added two more points for Bredagh before the end of the half.

Bredagh commenced the second half with the same enthusiasm and determination they displayed in the first half and it wasn’t long before they were rewarded with an excellent point from Niall Fitzpatrick. Bryansford found it difficult to penetrate a very strong Bredagh defence, with an inspirational and fearless display of football from Caolan Schablie, emerging with the ball from numerous foiled Bryansford attacks. Also, rock solid in defence were Patrick McLoughlin, Dominic McConville, Oisin Smylie and Ronan Smith. Bredagh added further points to their tally with scores from Ruari Doyle, Conor Francis, Declan Stewart, Nicky McCafferty and Niall Kelly. Bryansford scored intermittently but never looked as if they were going to cause concern for this great Bredagh team.

This was an excellent team performance from the Bredagh lads, and with a similar attitude and commitment in future games they will be very difficult to beat. Well done lads, keep it up.

An Riocht Tournament
Saturday 16th June 2007

Bredagh U-12's travelled to Kilkeel on an overcast Saturday morning to participate in the the An Riocht 1 day tournament along with 23 other teams.

The bredagh lads gave a good account of themselves winning 3 games out of 5 in the group stages and narrowly missed out on a quarter final place following a very competetive encounter with Burren in the play-offs.

There were some great displays from the lads throughout the day and there is the potential for this team to go on and win tournaments like this if they can consistently perform well through all their games.

Bredagh v St. Brigids
Sunday 13th May 2007
Sunday 13th saw a squad of 26 turn out for two practice games against St
Brigids under 12's. Both games unfortunately ended in defeat by margins of 7
and 1 point. The difference in the performance this week as opposed to the
game at Kilcoo last week was a much greater level of determination and
desire to do well. This effort was demonstrated by all the panel and
typified by the efforts of James Durkin and Rory Doyle who both had " man of
the match" performances in their respective roles.

It is particularly important we get a good turn out at training on Fridays
as these sessions will give the squad the opportunity to learn and develop
their fitness and skills. We also play Carryduff on 3rd June and we will
want to deliver an excellent performance in that game!!.

Go Games, Sunday July 30th

Glenavy Tournament
Bredagh enjoyed a great days football on Saturday July 1st at the St Joseph's Glenavy 9-a-side Football Blitz.
The eight invited teams were Bredagh, St Peter's (Armagh), Derrytresk (Tyrone), St Vincent's (Dublin), St Patrick's Lisburn, St James’ Aldergrove, St Mary's Aghagallon (Antrim) and Glenavy.
The competition was run superbly well and the rules were very interesting - there were no goal keepers and only points counted.

Bredagh performed really well and were only knocked out by St Peter's after extra time. Witht the scores level, it went to a 'Golden Point'. We had two good chances to score but were unlucky. The Dubs won the cup with the lads from Armagh Runners-up.

And finally, each club had a Player of the Tournament - Joe Shields took the prize for Bredagh.

Bredagh 4-4 Bryansford 4-3
Sunday, May 28th -Bredagh beat Bryansford in the latest Go Games at Cherryvale by 4-4 to 4-3, a narrow and quite fortunate victory. Diarmaid Kielty was the Player of the Day. Training is on Fridays from 6 O'Clock.

Bredagh 13-14 Kilcoo 1-2
Go Games, Sunday May 21st - this was a real shock result against our old rivals Kilcoo in a one-sided game where Bredagh were stronger and dominated from start to finish. Mathew Duffy was solid in goals but had no chance with an excellent Kilcoo goal taken by the smallest player on the pitch. The defence of Ronan McKegney, Diarmaid Kielty, Michael Robinson and Oisin Smylie gave little away and raided forward when the chance presented itself. The midfield of Joe Shields and Lorcan McMullan controlled their zone, launching attack after attack. Their long range point-taking was a pleasure to watch. The forwards - Declan Magee, Lorcan Smylie, Niall Kelly and Ciaran McColgan - gave an exhibition of scoring. The most pleasing thing for the coaches was to see the team spirit and support play. Things will get much harder as the league progresses but if the team continue to work hard success should follow.

Development Game - with a total of 33 Bredagh players available the second match was a 16-a-side game – to give all the players a run out. The football was hard, fast and direct. Training will continue of Friday evening at 6.30pm and the next match is next Sunday at home to Bryansford.
