U14 Invitational 7’s Blitz Saturday 17th October 2009
Bredagh under 14’s brought their season to a close competing in the Ulster Council organised under 14 sevens blitz held in Cherryvale on Saturday.
Bredagh opened proceedings with a hard fought victory over Ballymena side All Saints. During a rather tempestuous game the lads stuck to the task and ended up winning by 9 points. The lads quickly got into their stride maximising the concept of the “Fly Goalkeeper” and this brought them early success with goals from Conor Francis and Sean McGourty which laid the foundation for a good victory.
However the next game was to be somewhat different against the Giants of Glenavy. Sporting two midfielders in excess of 6ft the Bredagh boys gave it a real go and made Glenavy fight all the way; literally. However even the tenacity showen by Ruairi Doyle and Odhran Devlin couldn’t save the day and Bredagh lost out by 7 points.
The next game was against Saval, but not before a welcome break of tea and sandwiches served up by the delightful mum’s on the line Eileen McConville and Deirdre Francis.
Suitably refreshed the blitz resumed with Bredagh’s last game against the highly fancied Saval team from South Down. However the lads kept their best display for the end. With Seamus McCloskey marauding up and down the field supported by the gutsy Niall Kelly, Bredagh established an earlier lead which they weren’t to give up. Whilst our nippy forwards accurate finishing contributed to many fine scores the assertive, sharp defending of veteran full backs Ruairi Comiskey(Capt) and Caolan Schablie ensured no way through for the south Down men with Bredagh running out emphatic winners.
A very enjoyable day all round, thanks in no short measure to the organisation of the industrious football secretary Simon Francis, supporting the Ulster Council Officials. Thanks must also go to the Fitzpatrick, Francis, Kelly and McCafferty households for providing all the refreshments on the day. Well done Bredagh.
Bredagh Squad; Ruairi Comiskey, Caolan Schablie, Odhran Devlin, Ruairi Doyle Niall Kelly, Seamus McCloskey, Conor Francis & Sean McGourty.
Saul 3-04 Bredagh 1-12 Championship Quarter-final
Thursday 13th August 2009
Based on previous games this season, Bredagh went into this game 2-1 down against Saul and knew that they needed to perform well to come away with a result. As it turned out, the Bredagh lads put in a performance mixed with classiness, determination and spirit, to come away with the spoils.
The first ten minutes were all about Bredagh as Saul struggled to get the ball out of their own half. Bredagh piled on the pressure and a good point from Dominic McConville opened the scoring for the visitors. Full-forward Daniel McGrenaghan hit the back of the net with a superb goal, followed by Conor Francis and Seamus McCloskey both splitting the posts during this period of sustained pressure. All twenty eight outfield players were in the Saul half at a stage before their break finally came. A great running move left Bredagh caught cold as the ball hit the back of the net for a well taken goal. This steadied the ship for Saul and provided a welcome break for their back line as they followed up with a point to keep in contention. Bredagh were the better team for the remainder of the half, as both teams played some good football making entertaining viewing for the gathered spectators. Points from Seamus McCloskey, Niall Kelly and two more for Dominic McConville left the half-time score at Bredagh 1-07 Saul 1-02.
The early first half onslaught by Bredagh seemed a long time ago now as the referee threw in the ball for the commencement of the second half. Saul had now got themselves into gear and were playing good football. The home side opened the second half scoring with a goal to leave 2 points between the teams….game on. The Bredagh defence were very strong and proved to be very effective as Saul tried to attack on a number of occasions. Paddy McLaughlin was back to his confident and stylish ways after an injury that had him out for a good part of the season. Oisin Smylie was inspirational with his tackling, speed and tenacity, while Mark Patterson, Caolan Schablie, Ruairi Cumiskey and Ronan Smyth were all as reliable as ever showing great commitment and strength. U12 player Conor Dornan was excellent in nets standing in for the absent regular keeper.
Conor Francis and Dominic McConville scored a point each to keep daylight between the teams before a high looping shot from Saul went over the keepers outstretched hands and into the back of the net to leave one point between the teams. Points from Ronan Smyth and Conor Francis gave Bredagh some comfort as the game moved into a critical phase. Saul pulled one back as the tension mounted for the Bredagh supporters, who were anxiously awaiting the final whistle. The Bredagh lads held their nerve, and Oisin Smylie, who gave a man of the match performance, kicked over a lovely point to leave 3 points in it. Saul scored one more point before the referee blew the final whistle, making the final score at Bredagh 1-12 Saul 3-04.
Bredagh 3-17 Drumaness 2-08 Monday 22nd June 2009
Bredagh U14 footballers had a good win away to Drumaness in the opening round of the East Down championship last Monday evening. Bredagh put in a solid performance and the game never really looked in doubt for the Belfast lads. At half time Bredagh led by only two points but the scoreline was flattering for Drumaness as Bredagh dominated the play. Seamus McCloskey and Niall Fitzpatrick were dominant in midfield on the small pitch, while Conor Costello, Oisin Smylie and Declan Stewart were running at the Drumaness defence and creating plenty of chances.
Bredagh scored 1-05 in the first half, a point each from Sean McGourty, Seamus McCloskey, Declan Stewart and Oisin Smylie and, a great goal and a point from the impressive Conor Costello. It could have been more only for a number of poorly hit frees and wayward shooting at times.
Bredagh pulled away at the start of the second half hitting 2-04 before Drumaness registered a score. Bredagh scorers were Conor Costello 1-01, Oisin Smylie 1-01, Daniel McGrenaghan 0-01 and Seamus McCloskey 0-01. Drumaness hit a purple patch for a ten minute period scoring 1-04 on the trot giving them a glimmer of hope. However, good defending by Dominic McConville, Ruairi Cumiskey, Paddy McLaughlin and Mark Patterson soon stifled the Drumaness forward line and Bredagh steadied to get back on top.
Bredagh went on to add nine points to their tally, Niall Fitzpatrick 0-02, Sean McGourty 0-01, Declan Stewart 0-3, Oisin Smylie 0-01 and Seamus McCloskey 0-02. Drumaness only managed one more point before the final whistle to give Bredagh a well earned victory of 3-17 to 2-08.
This was a much better performance by this talented U14 team compared to their league defeat to Castlewellan the previous week. A lot of players are now beginning to show good form as a result of hard work in training and it’s now got to a stage where there is stiff competition for places on the team, with all players performing well and others returning from injury.
Castlewellan 1-08 Bredagh 0-06 Thursday 18th June 2009
Bredagh U-14 footballers travelled to Castlewellan on Thursday evening with an air of confidence after their great performance in last week’s league game against Carryduff. Disappointingly the game didn’t go as expected for the Bredagh lads, as they failed to capitalise on a strong breeze advantage in the first half and were left to rue a series of missed chances as the game drew to a close.
Conor Francis opened the scoring for Bredagh with a point only two minutes into the game. This was followed by a goal scoring opportunity for Francis who had to watch his blistering low shot rebound off the post and back out of the danger zone. Declan Stewart knocked over a close range free to give the visitors a two point lead before the home side got their first point of the game. It soon became clear that the strong breeze behind Bredagh was a significant advantage, as the Castlewellan lads struggled to get the ball out of their half. However, despite this advantage, Bredagh began to show an element of complacency as they took too much out of the ball and allowed the Castlewellan defenders time to close up the space. This, coupled with the fact that Bredagh kicked twelve wides from scorable positions in the first half, gave the travelling supporters a feeling that it wasn’t going to be Bredagh’s night. Bredagh hit four points in between the series of misses, three from Niall Fitzpatrick and one from Conor Francis, to give them an unflattering tally of six points in the first half. The Castlewellan lads kept their composure throughout Bredagh’s period of dominance and their limited ventures into the Bredagh half were rewarded with good scores. They kept in contention with three points from play but the knockout punch for Bredagh was a well taken goal on the stroke of half-time to leave the scoreline at Bredagh 0-06 Castlewellan 1-03.
It was never going to be easy for Bredagh in the second half, faced with a strong breeze now blowing against them and with the home side now in the driving seat. Patrick McLaughlin, Ruairi Cumiskey and Caolan Schablie did a great job in defence but Castlewellan went on to score five points without reply to leave the final score Castlewellan 1-08 Bredagh 0-06
Bredagh 4-10 Carryduff 4-10 Thursday 11th June 2009
As expected, this local derby promised to be a competitive encounter, and it surely lived up to expectations despite having to watch the full sixty minutes before the assembled spectators could make that judgement. With fifteen minutes to go it looked very much that it was going to be honours to Carryduff for the second time this season. However, the tenacious Bredagh team dug deep in the last quarter and took some magnificent scores to recover a ten point deficit and take a share of the spoils.
The first half was evenly contested, Carryduff opened the scoring with a good goal and a point before the Bredagh lads settled into the affair and replied with a goal from Sean McGourty and a point from a Niall Fitzpatrick free to level the scores. Carryduff looked very sharp up front despite the watchful eye of the Bredagh full-back trio of Ruairi Cumiskey, Ronan Smyth and Mark Patterson who had their work cut out. Carryduff hit another well taken goal and a point and Bredagh kept in contention with a pointed free from Sean McGourty and a brilliant long range point from Seamus McCloskey, which bounced in the penalty area and over the bar. Not long before the half-time interval, Dominic McConville and Mark Patterson clashed heads during a tackle, leaving both players in doubt for the second half.
Half-time score Bredagh 1-03 Carryduff 2-02
As expected, Mark Patterson didn’t appear for the restart and was replaced by Paddy McLaughlin, who is returning to normal service after injury. McConville started but was replaced by Alex McConaghy within a short period of time. Carryduff hit the first score of the half with a well taken point and Sean McGourty kept Bredagh in contention with a point from a free. Carryduff began to play the better football and pulled away with a goal and two points before Conor Francis kept Bredagh hopes alive hitting the back of the net with a blistering shot from distance. Aidan Donaghy and Caolan Schablie were superb in the Bredagh half-back line and both worked tirelessly in an effort to contain the Carryduff threat. The visitors hit two more points to move six points clear but great points from Seamus McCloskey and Declan Stewart didn’t let Carryduff pull too far ahead. However, Carryduff hit a purple patch shortly after and were very menacing for what seemed like eternity for the Bredagh supporters as they scored a goal and three points to move ten points ahead. Indeed, it could have been more only for a great save by Stephen Young who managed to parry a shot that seemed destined for the back of the net. The introduction of Conor Costello, Ruairi Doyle and Daire McPeake up front brought fresh legs to the forward line as Niall Kelly, Daniel McGrenaghan and Declan Stewart all had made a significant contribution to Bredaghs performance up to that point. Even the most ardent Bredagh supporter at this point was resigned to defeat, but what happened in the final ten to fifteen minutes was one of the most admirable performances seen by a Bredagh team in a long time. The Bredagh lads kept their composure and continued with their game, as Niall Fitzpatrick calmly slotted over three points on the trot, one from a free and two smashing points from play. Conor Costello volleyed home a goal from close range after Niall Fitzpatrick fired the ball across the face of the goal from the right hand side. Bredagh raised the tempo for the final minutes in search of what seemed like an impossible comeback. Oisin Smylie was instrumental at half-forward, having played a solid game throughout, as a lot of ball was chanelled through him to the forward line. Niall Fitzpatrick pointed a free from mid distance to leave a goal between the teams. Carryduff were now on the back foot but looked as if they were going to hold on until one of the best moves of the night starting from the Bredagh half-back line, and involving Aidan Donaghy, Oisin Smylie, Conor Francis, Sean McGourty and Daire McPeake, gave Francis a close range opportunity which he duly dispatched to the back of the net to a loud roar around Cherryvale. This turned out to be the last action of the game to leave the final scoreline at Bredagh 4-10 Carryduff 4-10
Well done to all the players involved for such a massive team effort and a well deserved outcome.

Bredagh 7-19 Kilcoo 1-02 Thursday 4th June 2009
Bredagh U-14 ‘A’ team notched up an impressive score of 7-19 against Kilcoo on Thursday evening at Cherryvale. The score could have been well in excess of that noted in the referee’s book if a succession of wides had been converted.
Nevertheless, a tally of 7-19 can’t be criticised too much and this young Bredagh team are very deserving of praise for their performance.
Niall Kelly opened the scoring with a goal from a penalty and this was followed by two good points from Seamus McCloskey and Sean McGourty. Kilcoo replied with a goal and a point to keep within range of the home team. However, these two Kilcoo scores proved to be their only scores of the half as the bredagh stalwarts laid siege on the Kilcoo goal. A succession of goals and points, interspersed with near misses, gave the local lads a lead of 5-08 to 1-01 at the interval. The best of the Bredagh first half scores came from defenders Paddy McLaughlin and Caolan Schablie, both scoring superb points from play.
Kilcoo started the second half in a determined mood and got an early point with some good attacking football which led to a close free which was duly converted. Again, as in the first half, this early score by the visitors proved to be their only score of the half. The Bredagh lads found their shooting boots and delivered a succession of scores to close out the game comfortably. Best effort in the second half was a Seamus McCloskey point from play following a great block by Oisin Smylie in the half-back line and a series of short fast moving passes through to McCloskey who accurately fired over between the uprights.
Despite the scoreline, this was a good performance by this talented Bredagh football team. They played some great interchanges in the middle third of the pitch and provided plenty of support play which caused difficulty for the visitor’s backline to defend against.
Team and Scorers: Stephen Young, Paddy McLaughlin (0-01), Ruairi Cumiskey, Caolan Schablie (0-01), Ronan Smyth, Mark Patterson, Oisin Smylie, Dominic McConville (2-01), Niall Fitzpatrick (0-03), Seamus McCloskey (0-03), Conor Francis (1-0), Sean McGourty (0-05), Aidan Donaghy (1-0), Niall Kelly (1-02), Daniel McGrenaghan (2-0), Declan Stewart (0-03),
Saul 3-07 Bredagh 1-12 Thursday 28th May 2009
Bredagh U-14 footballers travelled to Saul for their third meeting this season. Earlier in the year Saul defeated Bredagh in the football feile at this venue. However, Saul travelled to Cherryvale a few weeks ago for their first league encounter and got a demonstration of how capable the Bredagh lads can be when they were out-classed and out-played losing by twelve points.
This was an opportunity for Saul to seek revenge but they struggled at the start as Bredagh took a two point lead through a free from Conor Francis and good point from play from Conor Costello. Sean McGourty was unlucky not to get a goal when his close range effort was saved off the line before the home team registered their first point of the evening. Bredagh were taking advantage of the slight wind assistance in the first half and were rewarded with a Conor Costello goal after Sean McGourty lofted the ball into the penalty area from a free. This advantage was very short lived as Saul returned the compliment with quick goal with a free flowing move from the kick out. Just as Bredagh tried to re-focus Saul struck another good goal putting the away team on the back foot. The remainder of the half flowed from end to end with some good football from both teams and Bredagh hitting five points, two each from corner forwards Declan Stewart and Conor Costello and a well pointed free from Sean McGourty, leaving the half-time score at Bredagh 1-07 Saul 2-03.
The second half continued as the first half finished with both teams playing some good flowing football. Seamus McCloskey was impressive in midfield with some great fielding and the tenacious trio of Ruairi Cumiskey, Caolan Schablie and Aidan Donaghy were superb in the Bredagh defence. Niall Fitzpatrick, Sean McGourty and Seamus McCloskey all pointed from well taken frees against a strong breeze. Despite two further points from play from McGourty and McCloskey Saul edged the contest by the narrowest of margins helped by a goal from a penalty and four points from play. Final score Saul 3-07 Bredagh 1-12.
Team: Stephen Young, Paddy McLaughlin, Ronan Smyth, Caolan Schablie, Ruairi Cumiskey, Dominic McConville, Aidan Donaghy, Niall Fitzpatrick (0-01), Seamus McCloskey (0-02), Conor Francis (0-01), Oisin Smylie, Sean McGourty (0-03), Declan Stewart (0-02), Daniel McGrenaghan, Conor Costello (1-03), Alex McConaghy, Daire McPeake, Donal O’Kane, Mark Patterson
U-14 Away Day 28th March 2009
The day started with a challenge game against Clan na Banna in Banbridge. The Bredagh lads were very impressive as they played great flowing football, knocking in many scores, and winning the game comprehensively. It was on to McDonalds in Newry for a snack before heading to Pairc Esler for the Division 3 league clash between Down and Offaly.

Bredagh 4-08 St Pauls 3-05 Sunday 14th December 2008
Bredagh U-13’s secured a semi-final league match against Bryansford by defeating St Pauls, Holywood at Cherryvale on a bright but cold Sunday afternoon.
Conor Francis opened the scoring after 3 minutes with a good point from play following some nice interchanges in the middle of the park. Niall Fitzpatrick extended the lead with a well pointed free a minute later. St Paul’s followed up with a goal from a long range free which looped high over Stephen Young’s fully outstretched arms into the back of the net. It wasn’t long before Conor Francis cancelled out this goal, with a goal himself, hitting the back of the net soccer style having had the ball knocked out of his hands on the edge of the large rectangle. Goals were the order of the day in the fifteen minute period which followed as Niall Fitzpatrick, Donal O’Kane and Oisin Smylie all found the net for Bredagh and St Pauls scored a similar goal to their first with another long free. Bredagh fired over four great points from play before the end of the half, two from Niall Fitzpatrick and one each from Oisin Smylie and Conal Gormley. St Pauls hit a point for their third score of the half to leave the interval scoreline at Bredagh 4-06 St Pauls 2-01.
The second half was much less productive than the first half for the Bredagh lads, only registering two points in the thirty minute period, one a piece from Niall Kelly and Niall Fitzpatrick. St Pauls on the other hand looked sharper in the second period with some good fluent football scoring 1-04, to turn an 11 point half-time deficit to just 6 points in the end.
Despite the second half effort by St Pauls, Bredagh didn’t look as if they would be beaten as core players like Paddy McLaughlin, Niall Fitzpatrick, Mark Patterson and Dominic McConville all worked hard right up to the final whistle.
Team and Scorers; Stephen Young, Alex McConaghy, Pat McLaughlin, Mark Patterson, Sean McGourty, Aidan Donaghy, Caolan Schablie, Ruairi Cumiskey, James Durkan, Dominic McConville, Niall Fitzpatrick (1-4), Daniel McGrenaghan, Donal O’Kane (1-0), Oisin Smylie (1-1), Damien Hanrahan, Conor Francis (1-1), Niall Kelly (0-1), Odhran Devlin, Conor Costello, Conal Gormley (0-1), Chris Ferry, Nicky McCafferty, Daire McPeake, Declan Stewart, Seamus McCloskey
Bredagh v Drumaness Sunday 30th November 2008
Breadgh travelled to Drumaness for this away clash on a very cold but bright Sunday morning. Unfortunately for Drumaness they only had 12 players and were unable to field for an official game and Bredagh were awarded the points.
However, it was agreed that a challenge game would be played, with 5 of the Bredagh lads playing for Drumaness to make it 17-a-side.
Bredagh won the challenge game which was a close contest, with Bredagh winning by 4 points in the end, 2-06 - 2-02. The Bredagh scorers were; Conal Gormley (0-2), Niall Fitzpatrick (0-2), Niall Kelly (1-0), Damien O'Kane (0-1) and Nicky McCafferty (1-1).
There were notable performances by Dominic McConville, Ruairi Cumiskey and Caolan Schablie in the Bredagh back line, with all 3 guys doing a fabulous job in curtailing many Drumaness attacks. Also, Paddy McLaughlin had a great game in the half-back line, keeping a tight reign on the best player for Drumaness.
Bredagh 2-03 Carryduff 1-10 Sunday 23rd November 2008
Despite the inclement weather both teams turned out full of enthusiasm to contest this much awaited derby league match which had been postponed two weeks earlier.
Carryduff were favourites based on their performances at U-13 to date, but it was evident shortly after the start that they were up against much stronger opposition in the talented young Bredagh team. The earliest opportunities fell Carryduff’s way but they failed to capitalise, missing a couple of potential scoring chances. Bredagh backs Caolan Schablie, Ruairi Cumiskey and Pat McLaughlin were in great form as they battled hard to contain the Carryduff forwards. Bredagh were the first team to register a score with a well pointed free from Niall Fitzpatrick after 15 minutes of play. The game was very competitive in the middle third as Seamus McCloskey, Niall Kelly, Conor Francis and Niall Fitzpatrick got plenty of action along with their respective counterparts. Carryduff eventually got a breakthrough and scored two good points in a row from play. However, the Bredagh lads continued to work hard and were rewarded with a goal from Seamus McCloskey after his long range effort was fumbled by the Carryduff keeper. Just on the stroke of half-time, a further point was scored by Carryduff to complete a very entertaining half hour of football.
Bredagh started the second half one point ahead but Carryduff got back the advantage as they kicked over four good points on the trot to give themselves a three point lead. Bredagh, as resilient as they were in the first half, dug deep and regained the lead following another well pointed free from Niall Fitzpatrick, and a superbly taken goal by Niall Kelly following a great move that started with Sean McGourty in the Bredagh back line. Both teams followed with a point each, with the Bredagh point coming from a good free by Nicky McCafferty. Carryduff got back on top with two well pointed frees before a disallowed Bredagh goal which could have given the Ormeau lads a famous victory. The referee gave a square ball after consulting with both umpires, in what was a very tight decision. Carryduff extended their narrow lead with a goal late on in the game to clinch a victory which was a great relief to the travelling team.
This game, played in tough weather conditions, demonstrated the ability, strength and talent in the young Bredagh U-13 team as they showed great passion and enthusiasm to compete and win, in what turned out to be one of the great matches seen at Cherryvale this year. Well done to all the players involved.
Bredagh 7-10 Darragh Cross 2-0 Sunday 16th November 2008
A squad of 22 U-13’s set off for Darragh Cross on a bright and mild Sunday morning for their second league game in the series. The weather conditions couldn’t have been better for this time of the year and all the lads looked forward to the game.
Darragh Cross got out of the starting blocks very quickly and moved the ball nicely forward from the throw-in. Within seconds the ball was in the back of the Bredagh net with a superbly taken goal by the Darragh Cross full-forward. Despite this early setback, Bredagh kept their composure and didn’t panic as they settled into their stride. Declan Stewart got onto the end of well worked move from the back and kicked over the bar to register Bredagh’s first score of the game. This point was closely followed by two wides from Bredagh, first from Declan Stewart and then full-forward Conor Francis narrowly fired to the right of the upright. However, it now appeared that the Bredagh lads were getting on top, particularly the full-back line of Pat McLaughlin, Alex McConaghy and Mark Patterson, as they frustrated the Darragh Cross forwards with their strong resilient presence, breaking down a number of threatening attacks with ease.
It wasn’t long before scoring opportunities were presented to the Bredagh forwards, and they duly obliged, scoring five great goals on the trot, two from Conor Francis and one each from Damien Hanrahan, Declan Stewart and Niall Kelly. It could have been seven only for the referee to have adjudged square balls as Donal O’Kane and Conor Francis both fisted to the back of the net from close range.
Midfielders Dominic McConville and Niall Fitzpatrick were beginning to show, playing some lovely one-two’s and finding space to run with the ball. They managed to get their names on the scoresheet with a point each before the half-time whistle.
Full-forward Conor Francis found the back of the net one more time before the interval as the half turned out to be something of a goal fest for Bredagh. The teams went in at half-time with a scoreline of Bredagh 6-03 Darragh Cross 1-0.
Bredagh restarted with confidence and played some nice short passing football to work the ball forward into scoring range. Half-backs Aidan Donaghy and Sean McGourty were as dogged as ever and instigated many forward moves after winning the ball in their own half.
Just as the first half was a goal fest the second half became a point fest for Bredagh as they scored five great points without reply. Conor Francis kicked over two from play and Donal O’Kane and Niall Fitzpatrick both kicked over one a piece also from play. However, the best point came from Nicky McCafferty from a 30m free out on the right. Nicky calmly composed himself and accurately kicked over the black spot with his trusty left foot.
Conor Francis, now moved out to the centre half forward position, scored his fourth goal of the game as he kicked from distance over the outstretched hands of the Darragh Cross Keeper. Conor followed up with two more long range efforts that just went wide of upright. Conor Costello was very menacing up front and was rewarded with a good point, having to kick under pressure from defenders.
A number of replacements for Bredagh gave a good account of themselves. Ruairi Doyle was pacy and skilful up front, Chris Ferry showed good form in midfield, Daire McPeake was tenacious at left half forward and Odhran Devlin adjusted to an unfamiliar left full back position.
Darragh Cross rallied late on in the game and got a good goal, but the final score of the game came from Conal Gormley who scored a great point just before the final whistle.
Team and Scorers; Stephen Young, Alex McConaghy, Pat McLaughlin, Mark Patterson, Sean McGourty, Aidan Donaghy, Caolan Schablie, Dominic McConville (0-1), Niall Fitzpatrick (0-2), Declan Stewart (1-1), Daniel McGrenaghan, Donal O’Kane (0-1), Damien Hanrahan (1-0), Conor Francis (4-2), Niall Kelly (1-0), Ruairi Doyle, Odhran Devlin, Conor Costello (0-1), Conal Gormley (0-1), Chris Ferry, Nicky McCafferty (0-1), Daire McPeake
Bredagh 4-15 St Mary's 2-04 U-13 East Down League 2008
Sunday 2nd November 2008
Bredagh U-13 footballers got their league campaign off to a good start with a comprehensive victory over St. Mary’s at Ballykinlar on Sunday afternoon.
The U-13 team, comprising of a number of the current U-12 East Down Championship winning team and younger members of this year’s U-14 squad, looked good on paper but this was the first opportunity for many of them to play on the same team.
St Mary’s started the sharper of both teams but Bredagh got the first score after four minutes of play with a well taken point from corner forward Niall Kelly. This seemed to settle the Bredagh lads as they fired over two more points in quick succession, first from half-forward Declan Stewart, quickly followed by a great point from imposing full-forward Seamus McCloskey.
St. Mary’s got a point back from a close range free, however, this was to be their only score of the half, as they were unfortunate to put a number of scoring chances wide. Bredagh, on the other hand, were taking their chances at the other end of the field. Niall Kelly got two more great points from play before Declan Stewart got a goal following a superb move which started with goalkeeper Stephen Young. Midfielder Niall Fitzpatrick added his name to the score-sheet with a good point from play and one from a free, as did half-forward Damien Hanrahan, who scored two great points from play just before the interval, leaving the half-time scoreline at Bredagh 1-09 St Mary’s 0-01.
St Mary’s were a lot better than the scoreline suggested at half-time and it was inevitable that scores would eventually come their way. The teams traded two points each shortly after the restart, with the Bredagh points coming from Niall Kelly and Niall Fitzpatrick. St. Mary’s followed up with a good goal to narrow the gap but failed to capitalise on this initiative as Bredagh slotted over two more great points, first from Niall Fitzpatrick and then Seamus McCloskey. Damien Hanrahan was bundled to the ground in the penalty area and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty. Niall Fitzpatrick stepped up to the spot and scored a great goal into the right-hand corner of the net past the out-stretched finger tips of the St Mary’s keeper. A similar incident occurred in the Bredagh penalty area shortly afterwards resulting in a penalty and a goal to St Mary’s. Hard-working half-forward Dominic McConville scored a great point and a goal in succession to reinforce the Bredagh lead. Aidan Donaghy who switched to centre half-back had a fabulous game in this position, leading many Bredagh attacks. Also notable performances came from Daniel McGrenaghan first at half-back and then at half-forward and, as ever, very assured at centre full-back Patrick McLaughlin had a very solid game.
St Mary’s knocked over a point before missing a second penalty, as Bredagh had the final say with a goal from Conor Francis, who swapped with Seamus McCloskey at centre-forward, and the final score of the game came from Niall Fitzpartick with a well pointed free.
This was a good result and there was some good passing and support play in patches from the Bredagh lads, showing great potential. However, a greater effort will be required to beat stronger teams as the league campaign progresses. This game was a good opportunity to allow the team mentors assess player’s attitudes and ability, with all six substitutes being used effectively. There will be tough competition for places on the team as the league progresses, so it’s important for players to demonstrate good attitude and discipline to retain their positions in future games.

Castlewellan 2-11 Bredagh 4-6 Miraculous Ryan denies Castlewellan
Thursday 26th June 2008
The under 14 boys travelled to Castlewellan last Thursday evening with only 18 players and concerns they could be heading for defeat. These concerns were heightened when after only 5 minutes of play, with Castlewellan leading by 3 points, full back Daniel McGrenaghan had to retire injured. From here on in Bredagh showed great resolve and thanks to a Donal O’Kane goal got back on level terms. Bredagh began to get their passing game together and points from Seamus McCloskey, Dermot Kielty and Declan Stewart put Bredagh into the ascendancy. However an injury to Ronan McKegney was a further set back and going into half time Bredagh only lead by 2 points and would be facing a stiff breeze in the second half.
The team showed real grit in the second half with the full back line of Ronan Smith, Ruairi Comiskey and in particular Mick Deery, keeping the pacy Castlewellan forwards at bay. Whenever Castlewellan did get past the defence, they still had difficulty in beating Bredagh keeper Matt Duffy, who had undoubtedly his best game of the season, bringing off a string of outstanding saves. Then came the moment of the match, if not the season to date, from a Bredagh perspective. Ryan McGarry won possession on his own ‘45’ and began what can only describe as a miraculous run toward the Castlewellan goal. Having taken on and beaten six Castlewellan players Ryan lashed an unstoppable shot to the roof of the Castlewellan net, much to the appreciation of all spectators at the game. Nonetheless Castlewellan weren’t finished yet and began to claw back the Bredagh lead and with 2 minutes remaining on the clock were back on level terms and the game looked heading for a draw. However Dermot Kielty initiated one final, free flowing move for Bredagh which resulted in Declan Stewart scoring what was to be the winning point of the game. Final score Castlewellan 2-11, Bredagh 4-6.Congratulations to both teams for delivering a fine game of football.

Bredagh 'B' 3-10 Bright 2-3 Thursday 20th June 2008
The U-14 ‘B’ team played magnificently well to defeat a very big and strong Bright team at Cherryvale on Thursday evening. Lead coach Nicky McCafferty had other commitments on the evening so Aidan Fitzpatrick stepped up to the mark to lead this great team to another well deserved victory.
The game was evenly contested in the early stages, with two good points scored by Declan Stewart to cancel out the two early points scored by Bright. After a series of wides and near misses by both teams, including a shot off the crossbar from Aaron Rooney, Bredagh found their shooting boots again, scoring four points without reply before the interval. The Bredagh points came from Conor Francis, Declan Stewart, Niall Fitzpatrick and Paddy McLaughlin. Half time score Bredagh 0-6 Bright 0-2.
Bredagh opened the scoring in the second half with two goals on the trot, first from Conor Francis and then Dominic McConville fired home from close range. Bright began to use their size advantage hitting the Bredagh lads hard and fairly, but Bredagh weren’t intimidated and got on with playing great free flowing football. Following a goal and a point from Bright, Niall Smyth found the back of the net with a great shot to give Bredagh their third goal of the half. Bright responded with a goal, their last score of the game. The Bredagh lads kept their shape and composure as the Bright lads lost their discipline to some extent. Bredagh slotted over four more great points before the final whistle, Oisin Smylie 0-1, Declan Stewart 0-2 and Niall Fitzpatrick (0-1, free), to clinch another well earned win against tough opposition.
This team continues to impress with every game, the players attitude, determination and great teamwork is good to see for such young players. Well done to all the players and coaches for another great performance.

Teconnaght 2-3 Bredagh 'B' 3-9 Thursday 12th June 2008
The U-14 'B' team played superb football in their victory over Teconnaght on Thursday evening.
The Teconnaght lads started sharper than their rivals and scored 1-2 within the first 8 minutes. The Bredagh nerves were settled when Niall Fitzpatrick calmly put the ball over the bar from a free on the 21 line. This score gave Bredagh the lift they needed and they began to flow with some great passing and movement of the ball around the big Teconnaght pitch. Midfielder Niall Fitzpatrick popped up again and scored 2 great points in succession from play putting Bredagh back in contention. Half forwards Declan Stewart and Damian Hanrahan were giving their markers a hard time making great runs with the ball and causing all sorts of confusion in the Teconnaght defence. Dominic McConville was a star in the half-back line as he battled for every ball that came his direction, showing great strength and determination. Niall kelly was next to get his name on the score sheet, twice in succession, scoring 2 points, one of which he soloed the ball half the length of the pitch. Bredagh were very menacing up front and it was inevitable more scores would come, as Aaron Rooney blasted against the cross bar from close range. A goal eventually came before half time, with a great strike from Chris Ferry as he blasted the ball into the top corner of the net. Half time score Teconnaght 1-2 Bredagh 1-5.
Bredagh came out as strong in the second half and it wasn't long before Declan Stewart added his name to the score sheet scoring a goal from a free that dropped over the keepers head. Declan followed up his goal with a superb point having carried the ball very skilfully from the half way line, making no mistake as his effort sailed over the middle of the crossbar. Bredagh were now in control as the backline of Daniel McGrenaghan, Michael Deery and Seamus McCloskey continuously thwarted Teconnaght attacks and moved the ball accurately to Bredagh players who were providing support in the midfield and half back line areas. One of these moves culminated in a great goal from Aaron Rooney as Lorcan Smylie picked up the ball in the half back line area running forward and laying off to Declan Stewart who got the ball to Aaron who made no mistake smashing home past the Teconnaght keeper. Stephen Young was as safe and reliable as ever in nets for Bredagh, while Oisin Smylie played a pivotal role at centre half back. Teconnaght eventually registered their first score in 40 minutes scoring a good goal from play. Lorcan Smylie replied with a good point before Teconnaght knocked over a point. However, Bredagh had the last say as Damian Hanrahan slotted the ball over the bar before the final whistle.
This was a great team performance by Bredagh as all the players worked very hard for each other, providing support and encouragement throughout the game and it paid off with a well deserved win. Well done to all the players involved.

Bright 0-0 Bredagh 5-16 Thursday 5th June 2008
The under 14 Boys footballers negotiated their way through the first round of the East Down Championship with a comprehensive victory against Bright on Thursday past. Despite the score line of 5-16 to no score. Bright put it up to the Bredagh lads for the first 20 minutes and made the boys realise that if you’re not on your game you can easily be caught on the hop in championship football. Thankfully the boys rose to the challenge and began to play the football they are capable of playing and went on to record this runaway victory. Bredagh 'A' 9-14 Downpatrick 1-2 Thursday 15th May and Sunday 18th May 2008
BREDAGH A’s BACK TO WINNING WAYS
The under 14 boys footballers got the weekend off to a winning start on Thursday evening with a deserved, if not convincing win over a tenacious Castlewellan team. Having dominated the opening exchanges with points from Ruairi Sheridan, Lorcan McMullan, Stephen Dougal and Ciaran McColgan, Bredagh really put their mark on the first period when Stephen Dougal finished off a 5 man move driving the ball into the roof of the net. Bredagh led 1-6 to 0-2 at half time. Castlewellan opened the second half with two well taken scores and the final result could have been very different if it wasn’t for a fantastic penalty save from Matt Duffy in the Bredagh goals. That save seemed to stir what was becoming a complacent Bredagh performance and thanks to some stout defending from the ever reliable Patrick McLaughlin and a solid full back in John Mongan. The strong defensive performance give midfielders Ryan McGarry and Lorcan McMullan the confidence to run the ball leading to goal scoring performance taken by Lorcan himself and full forward Niall Fitzpatrick.
This victory set the boys up for a trip to Downpatrick on Sunday to fulfil a previously postponed fixture. The lads really opened up and probably gave their most impressive performance of the season running away with victory on a scoreline of 9-14 to 1-2. Central to this performance was the magnificent goalscoring performance from Ronan McKegney. Ronan scored 5 sublime goals and was key in demoralising the Downpatrick defence. Downpatrick played with great heart but it wasn’t to be their day. Other performances of note for Bredagh came from Ruairi Comiskey, making his debut for the ‘A’s and Dermot Kielty and Ronan Smyth in a rearranged defence.
Now at the half way point of the season the coaches wish to compliment all the under 14’s on their commitment. With only one defeat in the league to date the lads can really push current league leaders Carryduff all the way. With some very strong performances from both ‘A’s and ‘B’s, and places up for grabs, the lads can look forward to the remaining games of the season.
Drumaness 5-15 Bredagh 'B' 1-7 Thursday 15th May 2008
The U-14 ‘B’ team were up against a very strong Drumaness squad on Thursday evening in the U-14 C league. The game remained very competitive up until half way through the first half with the scoreline very close at 1-3 to 1-4 in favour of Drumaness. The young Bredagh team were displaying good fluent football and providing good support all over the field as they notched up scores first from Declan Stewart (0-1, free), followed by a great point from Seamus McCloskey from distance. Half-forward Aidan Donaghy made an impression up front kicking a great point, followed by a well taken goal from a slick Bredagh move. The older and stronger Drumaness lads began to take control as the half progressed but the Bredagh full-back line of Daniel McGrenaghan, Michael Deery and Niall Kelly, goalkeeper Donal O’Kane, and half-backs Dominic McConville (replaced the injured Oisin Smylie), James Durkin and Mark Patterson all battled really hard to contain the full force of Drumaness.
Bredagh opened the scoring in the second half with a well taken point by mid-fielder Conor Francis, as the away team continued to show great character, working hard to breakdown the Drumaness attacks and never gave up trying despite the difference in age and strength. Half-forwards Declan Stewart, Ruairi Doyle and Aidan Donaghy ran their hearts out to follow their markers as they moved forward to get involved in Drumaness attacks. Midfielders Ruairi Cumiskey, Conor Francis and Conor Costelloe also kept apace with their counterparts diminishing their impact on the game. Bredagh rallied late on in the game as Declan Stewart knocked over 3 points (1 free) in the last 10 minutes, and futher efforts by full-forwards Aaron Maguire, Conal Gormley and Nicky McCafferty put Drumaness under a bit of pressure.
Whilst this Drumaness team is reputedly very strong for division C, the Bredagh team (mostly first year U-14 and 6 at U-12) showed tremendous spirit and attitude as they played with great heart and discipline and never gave up despite the scoreline. Well done to all the players for putting in such tremendous effort and for working very positively as a team.

Bredagh ‘B’ 4-09 Teconnaght 4-09 Thursday 1st May 2008
Bredagh U-14 ‘B’ team participated in a very entertaining league game at Cherryvale on Thursday evening.
The Bredagh lads got off to a flying start with 2 early goals from the tenacious Ruairi Cumiskey, who was giving the Teconnaught backline a nightmare of a time. These goals settled the nerves of the Bredagh spectators who must have been thinking ‘game over’. Not so, the Teconnaught lads stepped up the pace and began playing with purpose, pushing forward pressurising the Bredagh defence. It wasn’t long before they got on the score-sheet with a well worked goal, bringing Bredagh back down to earth. The goal was followed by 5 consecutive points, as the Bredagh lads struggled to get the ball out of their own half. Bredagh eventually regrouped and began to show their capabilities as they moved the ball skilfully up the field to the effervescent Declan Stewart who jinked and swerved setting himself up for an accurately taken point. This was closely followed by a coolly taken point from Dominic McConville from 20m out, keeping Bredagh in contention. The Teconnaght lads came back again and slotted over 2 more points before the half-time whistle, leaving the half-time score at Bredagh 2-02 Teconnaght 1-07.
The half-time team talk from coaches Nicky McCafferty (snr) and John Deery provided inspiration to the Bredagh lads as they came out ‘all guns blazing’ right from the restart. Bredagh took control and mounted serious pressure on the Teconnaght backline as first scoring opportunity fell to Nicky McCafferty who unluckily fired wide of the upright. It wasn’t long before they scored, with Conor Francis driving long from distance over the keepers head and into the back of the net. Conor followed up with a point 2 minutes later. Bredagh were completely on top as they dominated the play. The infrequent Teconnaght attacks during this period were assuredly dealt with by the strong full-back line of Dario Angellone, Daniel McGrenaghan and Michael Deery, and goalkeeper Seamus McCloskey. Whilst half-backs Aidan Donaghy, Oisin Smylie and Dominic McConville provided great support to the midfield and attack. Oisin Smylie was creating havoc for the Teconnaght team as he was winning the ball in the midfield area and surging forward with strong runs providing a plentiful supply of good ball to the full-forward line. Aidan Donaghy was next up to score for Bredagh with a well taken goal from close range into the corner of the net. Niall Fitzpatrick who replaced the injured Niall Kelly, scored a great point from a free from distance and was unlucky to shoot just wide shortly after with another great effort from distance. Oisin Smylie was also having a go from long range and was unfortunate to put the ball just wide of the upright on 2 occasions. Aaron Maguire was next up to get his name on the score-sheet as he casually slotted the ball over the bar following a great catch from a long fielded ball from Damien Hanrahan. Shortly after, Aaron was unlucky to hit the post as he attempted to finish a great move from the Bredagh defence from Aidan Donaghy and Ruairi Cumisky. Teconnaght managed to get relief from the pressure as they caught Bredagh with a number of quick counter attacks and knocked in 3 goals and 1 point in succession putting them ahead by 3 points. Bredagh rallied again as Aaron Maguire and Nicky McCafferty scored fine points from play. Teconnaght ended another fast move from defence with a point as the final whistle drew near. However, Bredagh were not to be denied as Conor Francis pointed in the final minutes, leaving just one point between the sides. The last attack of the game for Bredagh produced a free about 20m out from the goal line. Niall Fitzpatrick stepped up with confidence and put the ball over dead centre of the uprights with the final kick of the game. Final score Bredagh 4-09 Teconnaght 4-09.
Well done to both teams for providing an entertaining game and a great display of football.
Feast of Football for 14’s Bredagh under 14 boys enjoyed a feast of football over the weekend. The action began on Thursday evening with the A squad travelling to Kilcoo and securing a fantastic victory on a score line of Kilcoo 1-6, Bredagh 4-14. It is on very rare occasions that any team will come away from Kilcoo with such a comprehensive victory. Core to this success was the work ethic displayed from everyone on the team from the first minute to the last. This was typified towards the end of the first half with a outstanding example of quick, direct football. Matthew Duffy in goal moved the ball quickly to Stephen Dougal, who dispatched the ball to Lorcan McMullan who in turn hit Ruairi Sheridan who turned and coolly knocked the ball over the bar. An terrific example of gaelic football played at it’s best.
Whilst the A’s were enjoying a fine victory in Kilcoo, the B squad were finding life more difficult back in Cherryvale against a tenacious Dromara team. Despite getting off to a great start thanks to three consecutive points from an on song Nicky McCafferty, Bredagh soon found themselves in trouble as Dromara chipped away at the lead and began to assert their authority on the game. With 15 minutes remaining Dromara had established a commanding 9 point lead and all looked lost for Bredagh. However showing their by now typical trademarks of grit and determination, Bredagh began to chip away at this lead and when Dominic McConville lashed to the net it was game on. Bredagh finally secured a well deserved draw when Aaron “the Bomber” Maguire rose sublimely to pluck the ball from the sky, turned his man, and buried the ball in the back of the net. Outstanding for Bredagh were under 12 recruits Declan Stewart and Damian Hanrahan.
The feast of football continued on Friday evening with training in preparation for the Down Feile qualifiers in Carryduff on Saturday morning.
As anticipated the key game on Saturday morning was the eagerly awaited clash of Bredagh and hosts Carryduff. The outcome saw Carryduff running out deserved winners against a gallant Bredagh team in a very exciting and sporting encounter. All at Bredagh wish the Carryduff under 14’s every success in the finals next week.
The weekend came to a conclusion with the lads having the privilege of a Sunday morning coaching session with well known Monaghan and Ulster coach Michael Henry.
Bryansford 0-12 Bredagh 2-15 Thursday 17th April 2008
The Bredagh U-14 'A' team got off to a great start in the league with a comprehensive win over a strongly fancied Bryansford team in Newcastle on Thursday night. Team Captain Lorcan Mc Mullan won the toss and elected to play against a strong breeze in the first half. Deccie Magee, although lining out at full forward, dropped back into midfield and helped to win a lot of breaking ball. Bryansford put the Bredagh defence under a lot of pressure during the first few minutes, but with the tight marking and strong tackling Paddy Mc Loughlin, John Mongan and Ronan Smith on top of their game Bryansford only managed to register a number of wides. As the first half progressed Bredagh started to get on top and moved the ball through short passing into the Bryansford half. Lorcan Mc Mullan and Ryan Mc Garry took complete control of the midfield, a point noted by one of the East Down U-14 Selectors, who was doing a bit of talent spotting. Bredagh’s dominance started to pay dividends with well taken goals by Deccie Magee (fisted) and Stephen Dougal(low drive to the corner of the net). Bryansford raised their game and took a number of well taken points. Points from Lorcan Mc Mullan (2), Ruairi Sheridan, Joe Shields and Ciaran Mc Colgan gave Bredagh a well deserved 2-5 to 0-8 lead at half time.
In the second half Bredagh, with the help of a strong wind, reverted to a conventional inside forward line. Ronan Mc Keagney, playing in an unfamiliar corner forward position, made some great runs and was rewarded with two excellent points. The half back line of Diarmaid Kielty, Michael Woods and Caolan Schaible broke down a number of Bryansford attacks and provided the half forward line of Joe Shields, Ruairi Sheridan and Stephen Dougal with a plentiful supply of ball, which they used to great effect. During this phase of play Ryan Mc Garry, Michael Woods and Diarmaid Kielty all registered points, while John Mongan, who was having a stormer at full-back, was unlucky to see his attempt from all of 50 metres bounce past the post. With Bredagh taking a 10 point lead into the last quarter the game looked at if it was over as a contest. Byransford however, roared on by a large crowd of supporters, rallied and put the Bredagh defence under a considerable bit of pressure. Matthew Duffy took off a number of point blank saves as the Bredagh boys started to tire. Niall Fitzpatrick replaced the hard working Ronan Smith and helped tighten up the defence while Aidan Donaghy, who replaced Deccie Magee, proved a great outlet for the Bredagh defence. Bredagh held on, as the light started to fade, to record a 2-15 to 0-12 victory.
The Bredagh Team: Matthew Duffy, Paddy Mc Loughlin, John Mongan, Ronan Smith, Caolan Schaible, Diarmaid Kielty, Michael Woods, Ryan Mc Garry, Lorcan Mc Mullan (Capt), Joe Shields, Ruairi Sheridan, Stephen Dougal, Deccie Magee, Ciaran Mc Colgan, Ronan Mc Keagney. Subs (both used) Aidan Donaghy, Niall Fitzpatrick.
Coaches Comments: The coaches were delighted with a league win against a strongly fancied Bryansford team. It was only back in December when Bryansford comprehensively beat this team in the semi-final of the U-13 Cup, and shows the progress the lads have made over the last 3 months. With the Feile and a number of tough league matches in the coming weeks the boys agreed that we need to focus on improving their personal fitness.
Ardglass 3-3 Bredagh 2-9 Thursday 17th April 2008
Bredagh U-14 ‘B’ team took part in their first league game of the season at Ardglass on Thursday evening. Despite head of the convoy (mention no names) missing the turn off for the pitch the team managed to get there just in time for the game.
Conditions at Ardglass were in contrast to those left behind in Cherryvale with a strong breeze coming in from the sea and blowing from one end of the pitch to the other.
Bredagh won the toss and played with the breeze in the first half. The lads took advantage of the conditions and within 2 minutes took the lead from a well taken point by Niall Kelly. This was shortly followed by another point by Conor Francis following some good short passing from midfield into the danger zone. It shortly became apparent that most of the play was going to be in the Ardglass half with the strong breeze providing a huge advantage. Bredagh’s forwards were buzzing with Dario Angellone and Oisin Smylie attempting a couple of long range shots and unlucky to shoot wide. Bredagh kept up the pressure and were rewarded by a third point from Declan Stewart on 7 minutes. Seamus McCluskey provided a tough obstacle for Ardglass to get past in midfield as he foiled a number of attempts for the opposition to get into the Bredagh half. On 11 minutes, following one of many passes to the forwards by McCluskey, Damian Hanrahan managed to catch the ball with confidence and did what he does best in front of goal, fired home to the corner of the net giving the Ardglass keeper no chance. This was followed by two successive points from Bredagh by Lorcan Smylie and Dario Angellone. Bredagh continued to pressure the home side and were unlucky not to score for a period as the Ardglass defence battled hard to thwart the menacing runs of Declan Stewart, Damian Hanrahan and Oisin Smylie. Ardglass managed to get off their mark on 24 minutes with a rare venture into the Bredagh half ending with the ball in the back of the net. However, Bredagh were not to be stopped in their tracks and managed three more points before the end of the half, 2 from the boot of Niall Kelly and 1 from Declan Stewart following a solo run by Oisin Smylie from the half-way line. The half-time score stood at Bredagh 1-8 Ardglass 1-0.
Bredagh came out in the second half with a tough task in hand, to defend the lead they had built up, in the knowledge they were going to be on the back foot with the breeze now in favour of Ardglass. However, the Bredagh coaches identified the need not to try and kick the ball high out of defence but to walk it out and therefore made some tactical changes, moving Declan Stewart and Niall Kelly into defence, to assist natural defenders James Durkan, Donal O’Kane and Daniel McGrenaghan. This paid off as the wind-assisted Ardglass onslaught developed. The Bredagh defence worked hard to break down the Ardglass attack, with Ardglass only scoring 1 point after 10 minutes into the second half. The Bredagh lads kept up their short passing game out of defence and on 11 minutes managed to move the ball into the Ardglass half, with some great skilful passing and soloing between brothers Oisin and Lorcan Smylie, distributing the ball to Niall Kelly who slotted the ball into the back of the net.
The weather worsened half way through the second half with rain now being added to the wind and the light fading. Ardglass managed to score a further 2 goals and 2 points, as the Bredagh lads maintained their battling performance, minimising scoring opportunities for the opposition. The final score came just before the final whistle, a well taken point by Oisin Smylie, leaving Bredagh the well deserved victorious team.
This second half performance by the Bredagh lads was exceptional and they all should be proud of themselves, as they displayed great teamwork, resilience and determination which paid off with a great victory and great start to the league.
Team and Scorers: Chris Ferry, Michael Deery, Daniel McGrenaghan, James Durkan, Donal O’Kane, Dominic McConville, Conor Francis (0-1), Seamus McCluskey, Mark Patterson, Lorcan Smylie (0-1), Oisin Smylie (0-1), Niall Kelly (1-3), Dario Angellone (0-1), Declan Stewart (0-2), Damian Hanrahan (1-0)
The Johnnies tame Bredagh Sunday 6th April 2008
Bredagh under 14’s tasted defeat for the first time this season when St John’s beat the lads at wintry Boucher Road playing fields on Sunday.
Bredagh went into the game knowing they were going to face a stiff challenge from the current Antrim under 14 county champions and for the first twenty minutes they really put it up to the Johnnies. Points from Bredagh’s midfield powerhouse of Lorcan McMullan and Ryan McGarry kept Bredagh very much in touch. St Johns played a very physical game which Bredagh stood up to and when Ciaran McColgan hit the net after 15 minutes St Johns knew it was game on. From this point on St John’s raised the pace of the game, and as much as Bredagh tried, the fitness and physical presence of St John’s began to tell. Michael Woods proved an able deputy in goals for Matthew Duffy pulling off a string of outstanding saves. However, moving into the latter stages of the game, St John’s started to draw away and won the game comprehensively.
Bredagh used a panel of 25 with all competing for places for the first league games in two weeks times. Showing real determination in scoring his first goal of the season, Donal O’Kane was definitely showing the coaches he is one who wants his place.
Overall, despite the result, this game was very useful for coaches and players alike. It was a real wake up call for everyone associated with the under 14 boy’s footballers highlighting what is required to be successful at this level. Following the game the lads were asked to begin a basic individual training programme at home including a short run at least once a week and at least 10 press ups every night. The season continues with training next Sunday morning, meeting at 9.45am for a 10.00am start.
Panel-: Patrick McLaughlin, John Mongan, Michael Woods,
Caolin Schaible, Dermot Kielty; Ruairi Comiskey; Oisin Smylie, Lorcan (Skippy) Smylie, Nicky McCafferty, Mick Deery, James Durkin,Niall Fitzpatrick, Ronan Smyth, Niall Kelly, Aidan Donaghy, Conal Gormley, Lorcan McMullan, Stevie Dougal, Ryan McGarry, Donal O’Kane, Ciaran McColgan, Ronan McKegney, Joe Shields, Ruairi Sheridan, and Declan (Hagendas) Magee.
Bredagh Ambassadors in Cooley Saturday 29th March 2008
A panel of 30 under 14 boys footballers, 3 coaches and technical director Brendan Shields travelled to Cooley Kickhams in County Louth on Saturday 29th March for a challenge game.
Bredagh got off to a terrific start despite the horrendous weather conditions. From the throw in Ryan McGarry won the ball and despatched it to birthday boy Ruairi Sheridan, who after a spectacular solo run, pointed for the first score of the game. This set the tone for the first period of play which Bredagh dominated. Goals from Lorcan McMullan, captain for the day Joe Shields and Ciaran McColgan gave Bredagh a lead they wouldn’t relinquish despite a determined fight back from the Cooley men. Other outstanding performances included three points from overlapping corner back Michael Woods and two points from an equally energetic Michael Robinson. The other birthday boy, Matthew Duffy gave another reliable performance in goals.
Success was not reserved just to the field of play. From the time they left Cherryvale to their return, the lads were true ambassadors for the club. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves with good craic and banter. The representatives from Cooley made a point of highlighting how impressed they were, not only with the standard of the football produced from Bredagh, but also the boys exemplary behaviour.
The hospitality shown to the Bredagh group from the Cooley Club was first class and hopefully this trip to the shores of Carlingford Lough will not be the last.
Unfortunately the final part of the day, the visit to Parc Esler, to watch Down v Limerick was cancelled due to the postponement of the game. A disappointment to all but didn’t spoil what was otherwise a very enjoyable trip for all concerned.

Bredagh 3-5 St Brigids 1-2 Sunday 09 March 2008
The under 14's boys started off their season with victory against St Brigids
(Antrim) at a sunny, though blustery Dub Lane on Sunday. A panel of 28
under 14's turned out to record a 3-5 to 1-2 victory. What started off as a
competitive, fully committed contest, with both teams displaying a very
entertaining brand of football, regretfully deteriorated in the last 15
minutes due to ill discipline from both sides, resulting in the game being
abandoned.
After the first period Bredagh lead 0-3 to 0-2 with a gritty display against
a stiff breeze. However it was in the second period of the game that Bredagh
began to dominate with great passages of quick direct football. The gap
started to open following a superb goal from Lorcan McMullan following an
enterprising passage of play involving Niall Kelly and Niall Fitzpatrick. A
further 2 goals followed, leaving Bredagh in a strong position which St
Brigid's couldn't quite break despite a well worked goal. It was a great
shame that such a splendid game finished in such disaray with both teams
needing to work on their discipline.
The coaches were delighted with the effort and committment shown by everyone
on the panel, all of whom had the opportunity to put their claim forward for
a position on the starting 15 for the league.Training continues at 10
O'Clock sharp on Sunday 16th March in Cherryvale.

Bredagh 0-6 Kilcoo 5-12
The U14’s suffered a heavy defeat against an in-form Kilcoo in the East Down U14 Championship final on Sat Sep 8th. The Kilcoo boys started at an explosive pace as they sought to ‘get even’ for the heavy defeat to Bredagh in the league earlier in the season. This intensity resulted in a barrage of goals during the first half from which the Bredagh boys were always going to find it hard to recover. As the half progressed David Malanaphy at wing halfback suffered a hand injury and although he tried to battle bravely on for some time he eventually had to be substituted. He was later to find out in hospital that he had three broken fingers.
In the second half Kilcoo pulled down the shutters with a blanket defence giving the Bredagh lads little chance of closing the gap. The half was therefore a low scoring affair with good displays of defensive work by both sides. Any final hope of victory was lost with the withdrawal of key midfielder Kevin Dornan through injury.
Kilcoo were deserving winners on the day with some star performances particularly from their captain Darragh O’Hanlon.
The results between the two teams leave it evenly balanced at this stage of the season following a draw in the Feile and one convincing victory for each side.
The Bredagh boys have kept their hopes of a league title alive as they prepare to do battle with Kilcoo again in the final game of the season.

Bredagh 4-9 Carryduff 2-7 The U14’s kept their challenge for the league title alive with a victory over local rivals Carryduff in a closely contested game at Cherryvale on Thursday night 30th August.
The boys got off to a nervous start as the opposition were well fired up for this derby match. Despite two well taken points by Jack Hollywood in the opening minutes the boys found it hard to settle. The Carryduff lads slotted over some fine points and added two goals to their first half tally. Tim Durkan took the frees for the home side scoring three excellent points during the opening half. A well worked move with interchanges of play from midfield through to Kealen Devlin at full forward resulted in a well taken goal by David Malanaphy. This however still left the boys going off at half time 2 points down.
In the second half the boys settled down and show some signs of what they are capable of scoring two excellent goals in a five minute spell . The first came from Kealen Devlin and the second from Kevin Dornan. The defence started to play as a unit confining the visitors to a single point for the half. As the game drew to a close Tim Durkan finished the scoring with a low shot drilled to the corner of the net.

Subs: Niall Irwin, Ronan McKegney, Michael Woods , Ruari Sheridan, Ciaran McColgan, Ciaran McFarland, John Mongan , Michael Doran, Diarmaid Kielty
Coaches Comments:
The management team were delighted that the lads were able to lift their game in the second half after the heavy onslaught from the Carryduff lads in the early part of the match in this typical derby battle. They were particularly pleased at the workrate from the spine of the team from Daniel Robinson at full back through to Kealen Devlin at full forward. However the management team emphasised to the lads that there is room for much improvement before the Championship final on Saturday 8th September.
Full attendance at training on Sunday morning at 10:00am is therefore expected.
Bredagh 6-11 St Johns 2-6
The U14’s booked their place in the East Down championship final after a fine victory over St Johns on Saturday afternoon 4th August at Drumaness.
The boys however got off to a nervous start as the opposition were well fired up for this game scoring an early point followed by a quick goal.
A well taken point by Niall Irwin and a goal by Ben Scullion settled the team after they had missed a number of easy chances. As the half progressed the Bredagh boys found it hard to deal with the surging runs by the St Johns team and were lucky to go off at half time with a four point margin 1-8 to 1-4.
The second half started well for the boys with Kealen Devlin dominating at full forward as he worked tirelessly for every ball notching up a personal tally of 2-2.
Jack Hollywood was introduced early in the half at corner forward and quickly slotted home a goal from a tight angle. As the half progressed the boys started to move the ball well in the forward line with some good interchanges of play. In the backline Ryan McGarry had his best game of the season as he limited the St Johns attack and distributed the ball well with his attacking runs. As the game drew to a close Tim Durkan fired a low shot to the corner of the net to clinch victory.

Subs: Ronan McKegney, Jack Hollywood(1-0), Michael Woods , Ruari Sheridan, Joseph Shields, Ciaran McColgan, Ciaran McFarland, Brian Cunningham
Coaches Comments:
The management team were delighted that the lads have deservedly reached the final. They were particularly pleased at the team work and overall workrate against tough opposition. In addition, the subs who were introduced each contributed to this fine victory. However the management are very aware that the boys will need to perform much better if they are to overcome Kilcoo who defeated Saul in the other semi-final 1-10 to 1-3.
Bredagh 4-14 St Johns 2-2 The U14’s resumed their league campaign after the summer break with a win over St Johns at Cherryvale on Thursday night Jul 26th. The boys started off sluggishly as this was the first match for a number of weeks. Eoghan Curran at corner back and Conor McManus were the key players for the half as both denied the opposition clear goal opportunities. However Stephen Dougal and Kealen Devlin each scored a well taken goal as the boys came off at half time with a four point margin 2-5 to 2-1.
The second half was a different story as the team started to play well together particularly in the midfield and forward positions. Ben Scullion(0-3), Kevin Dornan, Tim Durkan(0-5) and Kealen Devlin(2-2) all caused major problems for the opposition as they increased their workrate significantly. Brian Cunningham came on as a substitute for his first game of the season and scored a fine point.
In summary this was a good display of football after a slow start. The boys were delighted to gain a home victory as they had suffered a disappointing defeat in the away fixture. The management team are well aware that St Johns are a strong team and will prove very difficult stiff opposition when Bredagh meet them in the Championship semi-final on Saturday 4th August.

Bredagh 8-20 Loughinisland 2-6 The U14’s progressed to the semi-finals of the Championship with an excellent victory against Loughinisland on Thursday night. However the boys did get off to a shaky start as the home side opened the scoring with an early goal and a point.
The Bredagh boys gradually settled as Kevin Dornan slotted over a well taken point and both he and Ben Scullion started to dominate at midfield.
They fed the forward line who started to move the ball at speed with some fine scores from Kealen Devlin at full forward who was assisted by Daniel Steele and Daniel Nolan in each corner. Tim Durkan added a well executed goal just before half time.
In the first ten minutes of the second half the boys found it hard to penetrate the Loughinisland backline and the home side put our defence under pressure. As the half progressed Michael Woods, Daniel Robinson and Ronan McKegney started to take control in the full backline and all had an outstanding half as they battled for every ball. Michael Robinson, Michael McGarry and Declan Magee in the half backline picked up all the breaking ball threading some fine passes through to the forward line. In the half forward line Tim Durkan added a further three well taken goals being eventually moved to full forward in a tactical switch. Lorcan McMullan and Joseph Sheilds coolly slotted over two points each and Ruairi Sheridan made an early impact on the game as he scored a point in his first minute on the pitch.
The game ended with Daniel Robinson moving from full-back to full-forward to rifle home a defenders goal.
The semi-final will not be played until early August.

Bredagh 3-12 Carryduff 2-7 The U14’s had a hard fought victory away to Carryduff on Thursday night. The match was played in atrocious conditions with both sides having difficulty playing quality football. The Bredagh boys found it hard to find the target in the first half and were fortunate to go in at the break with a 7 point lead . As the second half progressed the spine of the Bredagh team started to dominate with Danny Robinson at fullback having his best game this season. Ryan McGarry , Ben Scullion, Tim Durkan and Kevin Dornan through the centre of the team put some excellent moves together considering the conditions.
In the final ten minutes Carryduff closed the gap by adding a goal and a late point. However the Bredagh boys held on for a well earned victory 8 point victory.
Bredagh 9-16 Kilcoo 6-8 The U14’s recorded an historic victory against old rivals Kilcoo at Cherryvale on Thursday night with a fantastic 17 point winning margin. The boys got off to an excellent start with early points from Kealen Devlin, Daniel Nolan, Ben Scullion and Stephen Dougal. However the lightning sharp Kilcoo forwards quickly showed how dangerous they are by rattling two goals to the corner of the net to level the scores midway through the half. As the pressure mounted the home side stepped up a gear with Kevin Dornan and Ben Scullion competing fiercely for every kickout to curtail the key aerial threats from Kilcoo. They provided some quality passes to the forward line who were on fire with Tim Durkan, Stephen Dougal both adding fantastic goals. Ben Scullion completed the scoring for the half with a well taken goal. Although the Bredagh boys went off at halftime with a 7 point margin they did not get complacent as they knew that Kilcoo had the potential to wipe out that advantage within minutes of the restart. However on this occasion it was the Bredagh boys who made the explosive start to the second half with three excellent early goals scored by Tim Durkan , Stephen Dougal and Daniel Nolan.
It was at this stage that the Bredagh backline also started to dominate as this Kilcoo side were not going to accept defeat easily. In goals Conor McManus made some fantastic saves. In the fullback line Daniel Steele, Daniel Robinson and Ronan McKegney worked tirelessly for each other competing for every ball. The half backline of Declan Magee, Ryan McGarry and Michael Robinson dug deep to starve the Kilcoo forward line of any real quality ball. In the midfield and half forward positions Ben Scullion , David Malanaphy, Kevin Dornan and Tim Durkan dominated with some fantastic high fielding. Daniel Nolan was moved to corner forward for this game where he proved to be more effective scoring a total of 2-4. At full forward Kealen Devlin had his best game of the season with a personal tally of 2-3 while Stephen Dougal in the other corner added a total of 2-1.

Coaches Comments:
The management team were delighted that the lads have bounced back from their disappointing defeat to Castlewellan last week. They were particularly pleased at the team work and overall workrate against very tough opposition. In addition, the subs who were all introduced each contributed to this fine victory. However the management team emphasised to the lads that there will be some very tough away matches ahead as the season progresses.
Bredagh 8-14 Kilclief 0-3 The U14 boys started their Championship campaign with a convincing victory
away to Kilclief on Thursday 16th. The boys played some excellent football
as they notched up a total score of 8-14. The tight defensive unit kept the opposition to a total of 3 points.
The boys are also away next week as they play Castlewellan in the League.
Bredagh 8-14 Bryansford 0-3 The U14’s continued their league campaign with a convincing win over Bryansford on Thursday evening . The visitors had just come off the back of two fine victories to Downpatrick and Carryduff. The Bredagh boys were still smarting after a one point defeat to St John’s last week and came out for this game with a totally different mental attitude. From the start the boys were showing their intentions with well taken early scores from Jack Hollywood , Tim Durkan and Kealen Devlin. As the game progressed, the boys put on an excellent display of team football entertaining a large home crowd. The players worked tirelessly for each other giving a dismayed Bryansford team no time on the ball. This can be attributed to the hard work by the full back line of Daniel Steele, Daniel Robinson and Eoghan Curran and at half back by Kevin Dornan in the centre flanked by Declan Magee and Michael Robinson on the wings. This combined defensive unit confined the opposition to a total of 3 points. Daniel Steele even moved to corner forward and scored a total of 1-1. In midfield, the new kid on the block David Malanaphy and seasoned campaigner Tim Durkan totally outplayed the physically stronger Bryansford pairing. All six forwards added to the scoreboard as they played excellently together as a unit. They scored a total of eight goals with Kealen Devlin notching up a personal tally of 2-3. There were also some well taken points from tight angles the best of which came from Niall Irwin at corner forward.
Team and scorers
Connor McManus, , Daniel Steele(1-1), Daniel Robinson , Eoghan Curran, Declan Magee, Kevin Dornan , Michael Robinson, Tim Durkan(0-2) ,David Malanaphy(1-0) ,Lorcan McMullan (1-0) , Daniel Nolan(1-2), Jack Hollywood (1-2), Niall Irwin(0-2), Kealen Devlin (2-3), Stephen Dougal (1-2)

Coaches Comments:
The management team were delighted that the lads have bounced back from their disappointing defeat to St Johns. They were particularly pleased at the team work and overall workrate as Bryansford had some fine footballers in their team.
Bredagh U-14 B v Carryduff B
Bredagh 5-7 Carryduff 4-8 League, Thursday, September 14th at Boucher - the boys ended their League campaign with a narrow two point victory. The match got off to an ideal start with a goal by Niall Browne. However our close neighbours were up for this derby match and replied with three points in quick succession. Tim Durkan settled the team with a superb point from a free. Further points were added by Ryan Curran, Ben Sullion and Daniel Nolan as the boys went in at half time 1-4 to 0-3 in the lead.
Second-half: Carryduff made an explosive start to the second half with an early goal to bring the margin back to a point. The physically stronger opposition made it very difficult for the Bredagh backs where Kevin Dornan at full back played his usual solid game. James Mulligan, Ben McCaughey and Damhan Farmer battled hard throughout the half as they forced the Carryduff lads to shoot from distance. Emmett Costello and Ben Scullion fielded some excellent high balls but were forced to work hard throughout the half. In the forward line Tim Durkan scored an excellent opportunist goal from a free kick as the ball was moved forward for dissent. Kealan Devlin was then moved to the full forward position where he rifled two goals to the corner of the net. Carryduff replied with a number of points and a further three goals as they continued to make strong runs into the heart of the Bredagh defence. Bredagh dug deep and were rewarded by an excellent goal from Ryan Curran. There was a nervous last ten minutes to the game as victory was eventually sealed by two further superb points from Daniel Nolan and Ben Scullion.
Team & Scorers: Connor McManus, Ben McCaughey, Kevin Dornan, Eoghan Curran, Damhan Farmer, James Mulligan, Ciaran Fitzpatrick, Emmett Costello, Ben Scullion 0-3, Jack Hollywood, Tim Durkan 1-1, Kealan Devlin 2-0, Niall Browne 1-0, Ryan Curran 1-1, Daniel Nolan 0-2. Subs: Ciaran McFarland, Michael Doran, Michael Robinson, Ben Horner.
Coaches Comments: this was a very difficult tough match against local rivals who were physically stronger and were well fired up. In this final League game for the season the management team can take great heart from the fact that at least ten members of the team will be playing at this level again next year. We plan to extend our season with a number of challenge matches over the coming weeks.
Bredagh 6-13 St John's 2-6 League, Thursday September 7th - as the boys settle in to the new school term the squad has settled back to the pre-summer numbers. The rejuvenated squad played got off to a slow start against a physical St John's side and were lucky during the first half to go in with a margin of 3-3 to 2-1. Emmett Costello, Kealan Devlin and Niall Brown scored the goals with two points from Conor McCloskey and one from Daniel Nolan. In the second-half, Bredagh settled down and played much better football. The introduction to the forward line of Jack Hollywood and the movement of Niall Browne to the corner changed the flow of the game with both taking some excellent scores. Niall rifled a shot to the top corner which was his best score of the season. Tim Durkan and Kealan Devlin added two goals which took the game beyond the reach of the visitors. The St John's lads were confined to five points for the half with some excellent work in defence by James Mulligan, Ciaran Fitzpatrick and Kevin Dornan. In the corners Eoghan Curran and Ben McCaughey also played well against two sharp forwards.
Coaches Comments: although the side were starting to show some signs in the second-half that they are starting to play as a unit after the disjointed summer there is still a lot of work to be done. We plan to extend our season with a number of challenge matches after the two League games at Kilcoo on Sunday at 12.00 (meet at 10.30am sharp in Cherryvale, preparation will be important against Kilcoo) and Carrdyduff next Thursday at Boucher Road.
Team & Scorers: Connor McManus, Ben McCaughey, Kevin Dornan, Eoghan Curran, Daniel Robinson, James Mulligan 0-1, Ciaran Fitzpatrick, Emmett Costello 1-1, Ben Scullion 0-1, Niall Browne 2-1, Conor McCloskey 0-3, Tim Durkan 1-1, Daniel Nolan 0-1, Kealan Devlin 2-2, Damhan Farmer. Subs (all used): Jack Hollywood 0-2, Niall Irwin, Ciaran McFarland, Michael Doran, Ryan Curran.
Downpatrick 2-2 Bredagh 5-13 League, Thursday August 31st - for the first time in over two months the U-14s were able to field a full-strength side, marking the end of the summer holidays. The rejuvenated squad played some excellent football to secure a convincing win. In fairness to the opposition, this was a weaker side than the one which defeated Bredagh on their trip to Belfast earlier in the season. The first half saw two well-taken goals by Damhan Farmer and a third by Ben Scullion. Conor McCloskey was in excellent scoring form notching up three points in the first half. Daniel Nolan at corner forward linked well with the half forward line, firing over two points. Downpatrick however replied with two unstoppable goals. Half-time: 2-1 to 3-6 for Bredagh.
In the second half, Bredagh played with wind advantage and confined the home side to a single point. Conor McCloskey added a further five points to his tally as he had some fast interchanges of play with Tim Durkan who was battling hard on the wing. Emmett Costello and Ben Scullion made some fast attacking runs and they each added two goals to their tally. Niall Irwin came on for Michael Doran and worked tirelessly to create chances for other members of the forward line. In defence Ciaran Fitzpatrick played his best game of the season in his new role for the night at half back and also slotted over an excellent point. Kevin Dornan, playing at full back, blocked off any attack by the opposition. In the corners Eoghan Curran and Ben McCaughey played some clever defensive football.
Team & Scorers: Connor McManus, Daniel Robinson, Kevin Dornan,
Eoghan Curran, Ben McCaughey, James Mulligan, Ciaran Fitzpatrick 0-1,
Emmett Costello, Ben Scullion 2-1, Kaelan Devlin, Conor McCloskey 0-8, Tim Durkan, Daniel Nolan 0-2, Damhan Farmer 2-0, Michael Doran. Subs (all used): Niall Browne, Jack Hollywood, Niall Irwin, Ciaran McFarland.
Coaches Comments: it was very encouraging to see the full squad playing well together as a team after the disjointed summer period. As we have a number of tough matches over the next few weeks it is very important that we have a full turn-out at training as we attempt to finish the season on a high note.
McCashin Shield Win Friday, July 21st - Damien McCashin Shield Final at Ballykinlar - Bredagh 3-6 Ardglass 3-4. Bredagh qualified for their 7-a-side Final by beating Bright by 5-3 to 0-4 on the previous Tuesday. The Final proved to be a thrilling encounter and an excellent curtain raiser for the large crowd who were to see same clubs play in the Connolly Cup Senior final. Bredagh got off to an great start when Daniel Nolan opened the scoring with a well taken free, but Ardglass responded with an excellent goal after a surging run by their tall midfielder. Bredagh then started to move the ball sharply from midfield, playing a clever passing game resulting in scores from Kealan Devlin, Daniel Nolan and team captain Ben Scullion. The first half ended with a five point margin for Bredagh. Ardglass started the second half at a blistering pace scoring two excellent goals as their very strong midfield partnership combined to breakdown the Bredagh defence of Michael Robinson and Daniel Steel. Daniel Robinson in goals was also forced to make a number of point blank saves as the opposition sensed a major comeback and even took a one-point lead. At this stage the heat started to take its toll and Bredagh's two substitutes Ciaran McFarland and Niall Brown were used to great effect as the team regained control of the game. Ben Scullion won a 45 which he duly slotted over with ease to bring the sides level. Ardglass however continued to exert pressure adding two well taken points. The Belfast boys were then forced to dig deep and put together a number of fine passes resulting in Declan Magee finding Daniel Nolan who fired a pile driver to the corner of the net. With the game now on a knife edge the Ardglass boys threw everything at the Bredagh defence where Daniel Steel and Michael Robinson had worked tirelessly throughout the game. They were however forced to concede a penalty late in the game which was excellently saved by Daniel Robinson. The game ended with Ben Scullion sealing a fine victory with a point. This was a deserving victory in this very well run and enjoyable tournament.
Squad: Daniel Robinson, Daniel Steele, Michael Robinson, Kealan Devlin 1-1, Ben Scullion (Captain) 0-3, Daniel Nolan 2-2, Declan Magee, Niall Brown, Ciaran McFarland, Joseph Shields.
Bryansford bt Bredagh Championship Quarter-final, Thursday June 29th -report to follow.
Championship Victory Monday June 26th - Drumaness 3-6 Bredagh 4-11
This was a difficult Championship opener, especially as the home side scored an early goal and the Bredagh boys took some time to settle. As the half progressed they started to put some excellent passes together and they opened up the defence to score two goals through Niall Irwin and Ryan Curran. Four points were added by Daniel Nolan, Conor McCloskey, Tim Durkan and Ben Scullion who controlled the centre half back position. The boys went in at the break with a three point lead. The low score from the home side could be attributed to the hard work from the Bredagh backs as they played very well as a unit with Daniel Steele, James Mulligan and Kevin Dornan, Ben McCaughey and Aaron McPeake all dominating their opponents.
Second half: Bredagh added two further goals, the first of which was a piledriver from Ryan Curran and the second a cheeky opportunist chip from substitute Michael Robinson after the keeper went to ground in an attempt to save from Michael Woods. As the half progressed the home side continued to make life very difficult for Bredagh as they tackled tirelessly right to the final whistle. It took some well worked passages of play from the half back line through to the full forwards to break down the defence. In the end the Belfast boys were deserving winners.
Team & Scorers: Connor McManus, Ben McCaughey, Aaron McPeake, Daniel Steele, Daniel Robinson, Ben Scullion 0-2, James Mulligan, Kevin Dornan 0-1, Tim Durkan 0-1, Jack Hollywood, Conor McCloskey 0-3, Niall Browne, Daniel Nolan 0-1, Ryan Curran 2-2, Niall Irwin 1-0. Subs: Michael Doran, Ciaran McFarland, Diarmaid Kielty, Declan Magee, Michael Robinson 1-1, Michael Woods.
Coaches Comments: the management were very pleased with the work rate of the boys as the home side were well prepared for this championship match in front of a large home crowd. The boys now face a difficult challenge away to Bryansford in the next round on Thursday night as they will be without the services of a number of key players .
Castlewellan 5-12 Bredagh 2-16 League, Tuesday June 20th - the boys played with the strong wind in the first half and capitalised by scoring a total of 2-12 with six players getting on the score sheet. The boys played quality football, moving the ball well in the forward line. There were well-taken points, particularly by Conor McCloskey and an excellent long range free from Ben Scullion. The backs also played well as a defensive unit with Daniel Steele, James Mulligan and Kevin Dornan dominating their opponents. This resulted in the boys going in at half time with a 12-point lead. The home side were confined to a total of 1-3.
Second-half: Castlewellan played with the strengthening breeze and took full advantage as they put Bredagh under sustained pressure right from the throw-in. The home side took some excellent scores with a total of 4-9 for the half. Bredagh were unable to get the ball to the forward line and were confined to four points over the thirty minutes. As the game progressed the boys seemed to tire which in fairness to a number of them could be attributed in part to their long journey from Cork after their weekend exploits in the hurling Féile.
Team & Scorers: Connor McManus, Ben McCaughey, Daniel Robinson, Daniel Steele, Kevin Dornan, Emmett Costello, James Mulligan, Ben Scullion 0-3, Damhan Farmer, Kealan Devlin 1-2, Conor McCloskey 0-4, Tim Durkan 0-1, Daniel Nolan 0-3, Ciaran Fitzpatrick 0-1, Niall Browne 1-2. Subs: Jack Hollywood, Ryan Curran, Aaron McPeake, David Malanaphy, Eoghan Curran.
Coaches Comments: this was a highly entertaining encounter and using the old cliché it certainly was a game of two halves with each side playing excellent football, the visitors in the first period and the home side in the second. However, there were a number of elements of the game which the management team weren’t happy about and hope to address on the training ground on Sunday in preparation for the championship on Monday evening.

St John’s 0-2 Bredagh 1-12 League, Thursday, June 8th - back to winning ways! The boys returned to form with an excellent victory, their first in four weeks. Although Bredagh had a lot of possession in the first half they found it difficult to find the target on a number of occasions. As the half progressed they settled down with some well taken scores from Conor McCloskey, Daniel Nolan and Ciaran Fitzpatrick. In the second half the Bredagh boys started to play direct fast moving football with some good quality ball going into the full forward line resulting in a number of fine scores, including a well-taken goal by Ciaran Fitzpatrick. The defensive unit played very well with Michael Moynagh demonstrating the art of high fielding. Connor McManus also made a number of excellent saves to keep the home side scoreless for the entire half. In summary, this was a very good team performance as the boys now prepare for the championship, though the First Round Championship match will be rescheduled as a number of the boys will be at the All Ireland hurling Féile in Cork.
Team & Scorers: Connor McManus, Ben McCaughey, Daniel Robinson, Daniel Steele, James Mulligan, Michael Moynagh, Kevin Dornan, Damhan Farmer, Tim Durkan, Niall Browne, Conor McCloskey 0-6, Kealan Devlin 0-1, Daniel Nolan 0-2, Ciaran Fitzpatrick 1-1, Jack Hollywood 0-1. Subs (all used): Michael Robinson, Niall Irwin, Ryan Curran, Declan Magee.
Bredagh 4-10 Downpatrick 4-13 League, Thursday, June 1 - the boys staged a great comeback after trailing by eight points at half-time but were denied right at the end by some superb blocking in front of goal. A disappointing defeat after the crushing defeat at Kilcoo at the weekend, but the team showed tremendous spirit to almost turn it around against a Downpatrick team with a couple of very strong physical players who caused problems for Bredagh throughout the match. In the first half the home side also had a large number of wides. They did however have some well taken scores during the half, the best of which was a goal from Daniel Nolan. The home side were confined to a total of 1-5 for the half with the visitors taking an eight-point lead at the break.
Second-half - Bredagh started to play better football with some good quality ball going into the full forward line where Ciaran Fitzpatrick had a personal tally of 3-3. The Downpatrick side however played some excellent football in defence when the home side finished very strongly with Conor McCloskey, Tim Durkan and Ben Scullion particularly dominating the play. Bredagh were unlucky not to get a draw in the end as a contentious goal was awarded to Downpatrick at a critical stage during the second half.
Team & Scorers: Connor McManus, Ben McCaughey, Daniel Robinson, Daniel Steele, James Mulligan, Kevin Dornan, Michael Moynagh, Ben Scullion, Tim Durkan, Niall Browne 0-1, Conor McCloskey 0-2, Kealan Devlin 0-1, Daniel Nolan 1-3, Ciaran Fitzpatrick 3-3, Ryan Curran. Subs (all used): Aaron McPeake, David Malanaphy, Michael Robinson, Niall Irwin, Ciaran McColgan.
Carryduff 4-10 Bredagh 5-7 League, Thursday May 18th - goalkeeper Conor McManus was the Bredagh hero with a superb save in the last few seconds. Carryduff had come back from nowhere with two goals in the dying minutes and looked certain to claim the points when another piledriver was sent in the direction of the nets. But, Conor showed why he is one of the best goalkeepers in the entire county by somehow diverting the ball away from the goals. Seconds later the final whistle sounded and you could tell from the expressions on the Bredagh faces that they knew they had thrown away both points.
Bredagh 2-15 Bryansford 3-4 League, Thursday May 11th - this was a brilliant game in front of a large crowd in Cherryvale on a perfect evening. The boys bounced back from their Féile disappointment to play some great football and deservedly win in style. In the defence, Ben McCaughey, James Mulligan and Kevin Dornan deserve particular mention as their work rate was fantastic. In midfield, Ben Scullion and Tim Durkan demonstrated the art of high fielding and dominated their area. In the half forwards, Conor McCloskey was in superb form linking well with the other forwards to slot over five points. Ciaran Fitzpatrick on the wing had a personal tally of 1-1. Daniel Nolan at corner-forward added four points while substitute Declan Magee carved out two points for himself.
Team & Scorers: Connor McManus, Ben McCaughey, Daniel Robinson , Daniel Steele, James Mulligan, Kevin Dornan, Emmett Costello, Ben Scullion 1-2, Tim Durkan 1-1, Niall Browne 0-1, Conor McCloskey 0-5, Ciaran Fitzpatrick 1-1, Daniel Nolan 0-4, Damhan Farmer, Jack Hollywood. Subs (all used): Declan Magee 0-2, Eoghan Curran, Niall Irwin, David Malanaphy, Rory O’Connor, Jake Gallagher, Diarmaid Kielty.
Coaches Comments: the management team were delighted that the lads bounced back from their disappointing defeat to Kilcoo in the East Down Féile. They were particularly pleased with the work rate of the defence as Bryansford had some very sharp forwards. But now it’s back to the training ground as there are a number of very tough games over the next two weeks against Carryduff, Clonduff and Kilcoo.
Co Down Féile Saturday May 6th, at Downpatrick - Kilcoo 2-6 Bredagh 1-1 & Bryansford 0-4 Bredagh 0-4. Each team had only two 20-minute games and Bredagh were drawn first against Kilcoo who raced into a seven-point lead, playing with the wind. In the full-back line, Michael Moynagh played very well against an excellent Kilcoo full forward. There were some flashes of fine skill by Conor McCloskey but he was well marshalled by the Kilcoo back line. In the second period Niall Browne played well, scoring 1-1. However the overall performance of the team was not up to the pace, anticipation and fast movement of the Kilcoo side. In Bredagh’s second match they took on Bryansford and unfortunately they were still reeling from the defeat by Kilcoo. In the end the boys were lucky to escape with a draw.
Bredagh 5-10 Castlewellan 2-7 League, Thursday April 20th - this convincing win was a great start to the League campaign. The visitors did however make the task difficult by taking an early five-point lead before the home side settled down with scores from Conor McCloskey, Daniel Nolan and Kealan Devlin. Ben Scullion and Conor McCloskey started to dominate at midfield with the half back line of Kevin Dornan, Michael Moynagh and James Mulligan also picking up a lot of possession. Michael Moynagh in particular has adapted very well to his new role at centre half back. Any balls which made their way through to the full backline were cleared by Ben McCaughey, Daniel Steele and Daniel Robinson. The visitors were confined to a total of 1-4 for the half with the home side taking a three-point lead at the break. In the second-half, Bredagh entertained the large crowd with some excellent passages of play from midfield through all of the forwards including Daniel Nolan, Tim Durkan and Ciaran Fitzpatrick at half forward and Jack Hollywood, Kealan Devlin and Niall Browne at full forward. The hard work resulted in three well-taken goals from Kealan Devlin, Conor McCloskey and Tim Durkan. The Castlewellan boys did have a number of impressive sharp forwards, forcing Connor McManus to make a number of point-blank saves, including a penalty. The home side finished very strongly with Conor McCloskey and Ben Scullion in particular dominating the play.
Team & Scorers: Connor McManus, Ben McCaughey, Daniel Robinson, Daniel Steele, James Mulligan, Kevin Dornan, Michael Moynagh, Ben Scullion 0-1, Conor McCloskey 1-4, Tim Durkan 1-1, Daniel Nolan 1-2, Ciaran Fitzpatrick, Niall Browne, Kealan Devlin 2-1, Ben Horner. Subs (all used): Jack Hollywood 0-1, Eoghan Curran, Michael Doran, Martin Maguire, Niall Irwin.
Coaches Comments: In the first half the boys were slow to settle down as this was the first competitive match of the season.. However during the second half the boys started to show some excellent teamwork with good fast movement of the ball resulting in well-taken scores. The management team are well aware that there will be tough opposition ahead.
Bredagh 6-10 Aldergrove 8-7
Challenge game, Sunday April 9th - the U-14s fielded an understrength side against St James’s with only two of last year's team starting. Bredagh elected to play against the strong breeze in the first half and they moved the ball well in scoring 3-5, with all three goals coming from Kealan Devlin at full forward. The other three points were added by Niall Irwin, Ciaran Fitzpatrick and Damhan Farmer. The visitors however had a number of very strong players, one of whom would have made his way onto any minor side as he scored most of their total tally of 3-5 for the half. The full-back line of Daniel Steele, Ryan Curran and Eoghan Curran were under a lot of pressure during the half against the stiff breeze. Although the half back line of Kevin Dornan, James Mulligan and Ben McCaughey picked up a lot of breaking ball, their efforts were frustrated by lack of movement further up the field.
A number of changes were made for the second-half to allow all of the panel to stake their claim for a position as we approach the start of the League campaign. A further three goals were added, one by Ciaran Fitzpatrick and two excellent goals from Ben Scullion, who ended with 2-2. Further points were added by Niall Browne, Daniel Nolan and Tim Durkan. However, the Antrim side mounted sustained pressure as the half progressed as a degree of complacency set in with the Bredagh boys conceding a total of 5-2. As a result the visitors went on to win by a three-point margin.
Squad & Scorers: Connor McManus, Ryan Curran, Eoghan Curran, Ben McCaughey, Daniel Steele, James Mulligan, Kevin Dornan, Ben Scullion, Kealan Devlin 3-2, Tim Durkan 0-1, Daniel Nolan 0-1, Ciaran Fitzpatrick 1-1, Jack Hollywood, Niall Irwin 0-1, Damhan Farmer 0-1, Niall Browne 0-1, Ciaran Grimes, David Malanaphy, Jake Gallagher, Michael Doran, Ben Horner.
Coaches Comments: In the first half there was some excellent teamwork with good fast movement of the ball resulting in well taken scores. However during the second half the boys started to get complacent and failed to dig deep when the visitors began to exert pressure. This defeat was a timely reminder that there is much work to be done before the new season gets underway.
Bredagh 3-17 St Brigid's 1-6 Challenge game, Sunday April 2nd - the team continued it's preparations for the new season with a convincing victory in an entertaining friendly. A strong breeze aided Bredagh in the first half and they moved the ball well from midfield. The forwards took some excellent scores though the best was a well-worked move resulting in a goal from Jack Hollywood. All of the forwards scored to notch up a total of 3-16 without reply from the visitors. St Brigid’s started to mount pressure in the second-half as they now had wind advantage and they recorded a total of 1-6 for the half with the goal coming from a well-taken penalty. Bredagh added a further 3-1 with goals from Daniel Nolan, Kealan Devlin and Niall Browne. This was an opportunity to use all of the panel in preparation for the new season as a total of nine subs made a significant contribution over the course of the game.
Squad & Scorers: Connor McManus, Ben McCaughey, Daniel Robinson, Daniel Steele, James Mulligan, Michael Moynagh, Kevin Dornan, Ben Scullion, Kealan Devlin 1-1, Conor McCloskey 1-8, Tim Durkan 0-3, Daniel Nolan 1-3, Ciaran Fitzpatrick 1-1, Jack Hollywood 1-1, Niall Irwin, Damhan Farmer, Niall Browne 1-0, Ryan Curran, Martin Maguire, John Doherty, Eoghan Curran, Ciaran Grimes, David Malanaphy.
Coaches Comments: Some excellent teamwork with some good fast movement of the ball, particularly during the first half. However during the second half the boys started to get complacent and let the visitors get back into the game.
Bredagh 4-19 Carryduff 3-3 Challenge game, Sunday March 26th - Bredagh were quick out of the blocks and playing with the breeze they notched up a total of 4-16 in the first half without reply from the visitors. There were some excellent scores from Ben Scullion and Emmett Costello at midfield with tallies of 1-5 and 0-4 respectively. The half forward line played fast attacking football with Tim Durkan battling hard in the centre. On the wings, Ciaran Fitzpatick and Daniel Nolan each clocked up a total of 1-3. In the full forward line Damhan Farmer, Jack Hollywood and Niall Irwin worked tirelessly throughout the half against a strong Carryduff full-back line. As the half progressed Niall started to created space which finally paid off as he fired the ball to the net. The half back line of James Mulligan, Ben McCaughey and Michael Moynagh picked up a lot breaking ball and starved the Carryduff forward line of possession. On a number of occasions Michael Moynagh made fast attacking runs resulting in two excellent points. Kealan Devlin moved to full back today and played very intelligent football as he broke down the opposition attacks and distributed the ball with vision. Ryan Curran and Daniel Steele in the corner back positions were faultless during the half. The second-half was an opportunity to use all of the panel in preparation for the new season as a total of seven subs were used. As the Bredagh boys played against the breeze the visitors started to get more into the game and took a number of fine scores. The Bredagh forward line were confined to three points, one of which was taken by new boy Ciaran Grimes as he fired over his first point for the club. In summary, the management team are very well pleased at the way the younger players in the squad are blending with the older lads as six of the eight scorers in this match are playing their first year at U-14 level. However the managers are aware that Carryduff were without a number of key players for this friendly and come the League and Championship campaign it is likely to be a whole different story.
Squad & Scorers: Connor McManus, Daniel Steele, Kealan Devlin, Ryan Curran, James Mulligan, Michael Moynagh, Ben McCaughey, Emmett Costello 0-4, Ben Scullion 1-5, Daniel Nolan 1-3, Tim Durkan 0-1, Ciaran Fitzpatrick 1-3, Niall Irwin, Damhan Farmer, Jack Hollywood, Niall Brown, Ciaran McFarland, Martin Maguire, Michael Doran, John Doherty, Ciaran Grimes 0-1, David Malanaphy.
Bredagh 9-8 St Galls 2-7 Challenge game, Sunday March 19th - this was an excellent victory in preparation for the 2006 season. A large squad of 24 players got a chance to display their skills in the game which comprised 3 x 20 minute periods. In the first period with a strong wind advantage, Bredagh played some fast, direct football notching up a total of 4-6 whilst keeping the opposition scoreless. In the second period, St Galls started to exert some pressure and scored a total of 1-5 to Bredagh’s 3-0. The third period provided an opportunity for all of the subs to get a game. As this was the first time that this squad has played a match together, the management team were very pleased with the way that they gelled together. In defence there were very solid displays in all positions through fine team work, especially in the half-back line where both Michael Moynagh and Kevin Dornan dominated. In midfield, Emmett Costello and Ben Scullion were very strong with each of them scoring two goals. In the half-forward line Conor McCloskey, Ciaran Fitzpatrick and Kealan Devlin all linked well with the full-forward line of Tim Durkan, Daniel Nolan and Niall Brown. This was an enjoyable game and a promising step in the build-up to the campaign as St Galls are a very strong side in the Antrim League.
Team & Scorers: Connor McManus, Ben McCaughey, Danny Robinson, Eoghan Curran, Jack Hollywood, Michael Moynagh, Kevin Dornan, Emmett Costello 2-0, Ben Scullion 2-1, Ciaran Fitzpatrick 0-1, Conor McCloskey 0-2, Kealan Devlin, Daniel Nolan 2-2, Tim Durkan 1-1, Niall Brown 0-1. Subs: Daniel Steele, Ciaran McFarland, Niall Irwin, Martin Maguire, Michael Doran, John Doherty, Ciaran Grimes, David Melanaphy, Damhan Farmer 2-0.
