Bredagh 6-10 Downpatrick 2-02
Bredagh under 16’s had an emphatic 6-10 to 2-02 victory over Downpatrick in Cherryvale. Despite the fine victory it came at a price with goalkeeper Matthew Duffy having to leave the field 5 minutes into the second half with what turned out to be a double fracture of his left arm. Despite this set back Bredagh continued their domination of the game.

Ironically it was Downpatrick who had the brighter start but once Bredagh got into the groove there was only ever going to be one winner. The defence was watertight with all six defenders playing well as a unit. Ryan McGarry and Ruairi Sheridan dominated the midfield building a great platform for a forward line that made the most of the scoring opportunities which came their way.

All in all this was a very satisfying way to start the season with much tougher opposition to come in the weeks ahead. With a very competitive defeat against Carryduff in the B section a number of positions are up for grabs in the panel of 38 players.

Team; Matt Duffy, Ruairi Comiskey, Diarmuid Kielty, Caolin Schablie, Michael Robinson, Ronan Smyth, Aidan Donaghy, Ruairi Sheridan, Ryan Mcgarry, Niall Fitzpatrick, Lorcan McMullan, Ronan McKegney, Dario Angellone, John Mongan, Declan Magee, Lorcan Smylie, Nicholas McCafferty.

Ardglass 2-09 Bredagh 1-06
The under 16’s got their season of to a disappointing start with defeat away to Ardglass on Sunday. Playing with the breeze at their backs Bredagh were first to score with a neatly taken point from Nicky McCafferty. However Ardglass were quick to reply with two goals and went on to dominate the remainder of half with the half time scoreboard showing Ardglass 2-03; Bredagh 0-03 and only for some stalwart defending from Aidan Donaghy the lead could have been greater.

Bredagh started the second half showing much more grit and determination. Tackling was much sharper and defensively, despite playing against the wind, Bredagh started to win much more possession and set up the play for the midfield and forwards. Deccie Magee and Niall Kelly started to gain much more breaking ball and it came as no surprise when Lorcan Smylie latched on to a loose ball and buried it in the net. However the two first half goals conceded by Bredagh were to prove very costly with the final score being Ardglass 2-09; Bredagh 1-06.

Despite losing, the lads showed great spirit in the second half. Lessons to be learned from the game include the need to maximise hard won possession and not to concede needless turnovers. The lads will no doubt come on for this defeat and will look forward to an improved display when they meet Carryduff in their next game.

Bredagh 4-13 Burren 1-7
Saturday 26th September 2009

The U16’s booked their place in the All County league semi-final with a convincing 15 point win over Burren on Saturday night at Downpatrick.
The Bredagh boys made an explosive start to the game with early points from Ben Scullion, Tim Durkan and Aidan O’Gorman. This set the tone for the game with fantastic movement in the forward line as the lads went on to score a total of 2-8 for the half. The first goal was scored by Kealen Devlin (penalty) and the second was a well worked effort by Tim Durkan.
The defence also worked tirelessly during the half to curtail Burren to 0-5.
In the second half the boys played some of the best football that they have played all season. In the full back line Dario Angelone in the corner had a very solid game. Danny Robinson in the centre was ably assisted by his brother Michael on the left.
In the half back line Lorcan McMullan, Aidan O’Gorman and Ryan McGarry mopped up the threat from the strong Burren half forwards.
Niall Irwin also played a more defensive role and intelligently distributed the ball to the forward line. At midfield Ben Scullion and Kevin Dornan were the engine room of the team mounting attack after attack with Kevin being rewarded for his efforts with a well taken goal. Ben also scored three points over the course of the game.
The forwards played very well as a unit with some fantastic interchanges of play. This resulted in a personal tally for Kaelen Devlin of 2-3 , Tim Durkan 1-2 and Daniel Nolan 0-2.
A total of four substitutes were introduced during the half. Michael Woods came on to score a well taken point while Connor Francis assisted the attack with some fine passes. Eoghan Curran and Michael Deery assisted the defence in confining the Burren team to 1-2 for the half.

Castlewellan 4-4 Bredagh 2-19
Wednesday 9th September 2009

On Wednesday night the U16 boys played their second game in the All County series securing a nine point victory away to Castlewellan.
The boys got off to the perfect start with an early well taken goal by David Malanaphy. This was followed by some fantastic interchanges of play starting in the half back line resulting in two early points from Jude Moreland.
As the half progressed the crowd were entertained by some excellent football with the teams going off at half time 1-10 to 1-2.
The second half opened with a clinically taken goal by team captain Kealen Devlin. Danny Robinson had another strong performance with some high fielding supported in the half back line by Lorcan McMullan and Jude Moreland. In the full back line Aidan O’Gorman made some crucial interceptions and cleverly picked out his teammates with his clearances. In midfield Ben Scullion and Kevin Dornan worked tirelessly against a strong Castlewellan pairing. In the half forward line Daniel Nolan secured a personal tally of six points with Tim Durkan in the centre setting up many attacks while also adding on a further four points himself.
The full forward line of Jack Hollywood in the centre supported by David Malanaphy and Michael Doran in the corners created space and worked well with their team mates further out the field as they contributed to the overall team performance of 21 scores.

With the hurling final on Sunday , the management team made a total of five changes during the second half including a debut by U14 star Ronan Smith who coolly settled into the side. Connor Francis from the lower age group and Michael Woods both slotted in to the corner forward positions. Diarmaid Kielty and Ryan McGarry were both introduced to the defence having been out for a few weeks.

These were followed by knew that this was going to be a tough battle in very wet conditions against the recently crowned South Down championship winners. The Down minor star Caolan Mooney playing at midfield was their key player and in the early stages of the game was showing his quality as the home side went into an early four point lead. However as the Bredagh midfield pairing of Ben Scullion and Kevin Dornan settled into the game they curtailed his penetrating runs and replied with three excellent points between them. Tim Durkan was also in fine scoring form slotting over two well taken points in the first half. The home side demonstrated why they are championship winners scoring a total of 2-6 for the first half with the visitors having a total of 0-5.

Team and scorers

Connor McManus, John Mongan, Aidan O’Gorman, Michael Robinson , Jude Moreland(0-2) , Lorcan McMullan, Danny Robinson, Ben Scullion(0-2), Kevin Dornan, Daniel Nolan(0-6), Tim Durkan(0-4), Kealen Devlin(1-1), David Malanaphy(1-1),) Jack Hollywood (0-2), Michael Doran (0-1)

Coaches Comments:
The management team were delighted with the overall performance but acknowledged that the number of changes resulted in the team conceding four goals. The boys can now look forward to the championship final but realise that a lot more work needs to be done as Kilcoo are a much tougher proposition.

Rostrevor 3-8 Bredagh 2-13
Wednesday 2nd September 2009

On Wednesday night the U16 boys played their first game in the All County series away to Rostrevor having secured a top four place in the East Down league.
The boys knew that this was going to be a tough battle in very wet conditions against the recently crowned South Down championship winners.

This was certainly a game of two halves as the Bredagh boys played some of the best football of this season in the second half. The workrate and teamwork paid dividends with an early well taken goal from Jack Hollywood.
The defence worked very well as a unit with Lorcan McMullan at the centre. At half back Niall Irwin and Jude Moreland on the wings worked tirelessly. Aidan O’Gorman at full back made a number of fine interceptions and setup attacks with pinpoint clearances. Dario Angelone came on as sub in the right corner and tenaciously marked his man. In the other corner Michael Robinson showed his pace as he fought for every ball. The combined defensive unit limited the home team to a total of 1-2 for the second half while the Belfast boys notched up a total of 2-8. The second goal coming late in the game from team captain Kealan Devlin at wing half forward having one of his best games of the season with a personal tally of 1-3. Tim Durkan at centre half forward ran at the Rostrevor defence at every opportunity scoring a total of 0-5 over the course of the game. Daniel Nolan on the wing linked up well with corner forwards David Malanaphy and Michael Doran both of whom secured the ball well and released it to their attacking team mates.

Team and scorers

Connor McManus, Michael Woods , Aidan O’Gorman, Michael Robinson , Jude Moreland, Lorcan McMullan, Niall Irwin (0-1), Ben Scullion(0-2), Kevin Dornan(0-1), Jack Hollywood (1-1), Tim Durkan(0-5), Kealen Devlin(1-3), David Malanaphy, Daniel Nolan, Michael Doran

Subs: Dario Angelone , Ciaran McFarland

Coaches Comments:
The management team were delighted with the second half comeback and the overall team performance in very difficult wet playing conditions against tough opponents. The boys can now look forward to the championship final but realise that a lot more work needs to be done in the coming weeks as they face old rivals Kilcoo.

Bredagh 7-17 Carryduff 2-6
Saturday 15th August 2009

‘The Magnificient Seven ‘

The U16’s booked their place in the Championship final with a convincing win over local rivals Carryduff on Saturday evening at St Paul’s.
Carryduff made an explosive start to the game taking full advantage of a strong wind
to score 1-1 in the opening five minutes. The Bredagh management team were forced to make a few positional changes with Kealen Devlin moving out to the half forward line and Tim Durkan adopting a more defensive role. As the boys all gradually settled into the game Kealen Devlin made a clever surging run to thread the ball through to Daniel Nolan who slotted the ball away neatly to the corner of the net. This was followed by a fine goal from Jack Hollywood and well taken points from Tim Durkan and Danny Robinson. Due to the strong wind the defensive unit were forced to battle for every ball as Carryduff kept up the pressure with attacking runs from midfield. Ben Scullion and Kevin Dornan at midfield demonstrated the art of high fielding and sheer determination with Lorcan McMullan in his centre half back role and Ryan McGarry and ‘Man of the match’ Danny Robinson on the wings cleverly curtailing the Carryduff threat. Aidan O’Gorman at full back was first to every ball with Michael Robinson and Diarmaid Kielty in the corners battling hard against the very sharp Carryduff forwards. This combined effort resulted in the sides going off at half time with a margin of 3-6 to 1-4.

The second half started with some excellent interchanges of play from the Bredagh boys and was rewarded with an early goal from Niall Irwin and score of the day from Ben Scullion as he steered the ball over the bar from long range. Tim Durkan was also in fine scoring form with a personal tally of 2-6 over the course of the game. Kealen Devlin playing his captains role in typical ‘Dooher’ like fashion thrived in the heat of the championship battle. In the second half a total of five substitutes were introduced with David Malanaphy and Michael Woods scoring a goal and a point respectively.
Carryduff battled to the end in true championship style with some well taken scores against the strong breeze.
As the referee blew the final whistle the large crowd applauded the players as they left the field after a very entertaining game.

Team and scorers

Connor McManus, Diarmaid Kielty(0-1), Aidan O’Gorman, Michael Robinson , Ryan McGarry , Lorcan McMullan, Danny Robinson(0-2) , Ben Scullion(0-2), Kevin Dornan, Daniel Nolan(2-3), Tim Durkan(2-6), Niall Irwin (1-0), Michael Doran, Kealen Devlin(0-2), Jack Hollywood (1-0). Subs: David Malanaphy (1-0) , Jude Moreland, Michael Woods(0-1) Joseph Shields, Ciaran McFarland, Aaron Maguire, Declan Magee, Daniel Steele, Gavin McDonald, Ruairi Sheridan

Coaches Comments:
The management team were delighted with the overall team performance in what was a very tough physical derby battle. The boys can now look forward to the final but realise that a lot more work needs to be done in the coming weeks as they face the winners of Kilcoo and Castlewellan.

Bredagh 3-21 St Johns 1-5
Wednesday 29th August 2009

The U16’s completed the East Down stage of the league with a convincing win over St Johns at home on Wednesday night. The management brought in a number of lads from the B squad to cover for holiday absences. This was an excellent opportunity for them, one which they all grabbed with both hands over the course of the game.

In the first half it took a little bit of time for the lads to get back to full match pace after the summer break. As the half progressed the team started to put some excellent passages of play together resulting in fine points from Tim Durkan , Ciaran McFarland , Daniel Nolan, Kealen Devlin and Ruairi Sheridan. Two well taken goals were added by Jack Hollywood and David Malanaphy to leave a half time score of 2-12 to 1-4.
In the second half the backline played very well as a unit with the Robinson brothers , Daniel Steele and Eoghan Curran in the full backline and Lorcan McMullan in the centre half back position absorbing any threat from St Johns. They confined the opposition to a single point for the half.
The midfield pairing of Kevin Dornan and Tim Durkan worked tirelessly covering back and also making penetrating runs into the forward line. There were a total of seven substitutes in the second half all of whom made a significant contribution to the total of 1-9 which was clocked up over the 30 minute period. As the game drew to a close Daniel Nolan passed the ball to full forward target man Aaron Maguire who was immediately pulled to the ground to win a penalty. Aaron dusted himself off and in front of a large home crowd slotted the ball coolly to the roof of the net which was a fitting end to this stage of the league campaign.

Team and scorers

Connor McManus, John Mongan, Daniel Robinson, Eoghan Curran, Diarmaid Kielty, Lorcan McMullan(0-1), Michael Robinson , Kevin Dornan, Tim Durkan(0-5), David Malanaphy (1-1), Daniel Nolan(0-4),Ruairi Sheridan (0-1), Ciaran McFarland (0-2), Kealen Devlin(0-3), Jack Hollywood (1-3). Subs: Dario Angelone, Niall Irwin(0-1), Joseph Shields, Daniel Steele, Lorcan Smylie, Aaron Maguire(1-0), Luke McKenna, Conor Francis

Coaches Comments:
The management team were happy with the overall performance given that it was the first competitive match after the summer break. They realise however that a lot of work will need to be done before the Championship semi-final. They emphasised therefore the importance of a full attendance at training this weekend.

Bredagh 2-16 Downpatrick 3-14
Wednesday 1st July 2009

The U16’s suffered their first defeat of the season going down by a narrow one point margin away to Downpatrick on Wednesday night.
The management were forced to field a weakened side due to injuries and the start of the holiday season.
The team found it hard to settle against the home side who were really up for the visit of the Belfast lads. The first half was high scoring from both sides with Bredagh notching up 1-11 and Downpatrick 2-6 leaving a two point margin at the break. Jack Hollywood scored the goal and there were some very well taken frees by Tim Durkan.
The second half was a tightly fought contest with both sides exchanging scores leaving an evenly balanced game with ten minutes to go. Bredagh were then awarded a penalty which Kealen Devlin coolly slotted away. Downpatrick however quickly replied with a well executed goal to leave the sides level. Although Tim Durkan put Bredagh one point ahead in the last five minutes Downpatrick came back with two points to leave them with a one point margin. The last few minutes were frantic with Bredagh camped in the Downpatrick scoring zone. A number of clear calls for frees were disregarded by the referee as the Bredagh boys fought to the end to no avail.

Team and scorers

Gavin McDonald, Michael Woods, Aidan O’Gorman, Eoghan Curran, Jude Moreland (0-2), Ryan McGarry, Diarmaid Kielty, Ben Scullion, Kevin Dornan(0-2), David Malanaphy, Tim Durkan(0-7), John Mongan, Kealen Devlin(1-2), Daniel Nolan(0-3), Jack Hollywood(1-0). Subs:Joseph Shields, Ciaran McFarland, Ronan McKegney, Dario Angelone

Coaches Comments:
This was one of those nights where the reshuffled squad didn’t play well as a team.
There was however a notable performance from Aidan O’Gorman in defence where he had his best game of the season at full back.

The management team were keen to emphasise that a lot of work needs to be done after the break in preparation for the Championship semi-final at the beginning of August.

Bredagh 3-12 Carryduff 3-5
Thursday 25th June 2009

The U16’s continued their unbeaten run in the league campaign with a seven point win over Carryduff at Cherryvale on Thursday evening .
The game was a typical local derby with both teams battling hard for every ball. Carryduff lost one of their midfielders early in the game as Bredagh slotted over a number of well taken frees by Tim Durkan to go into a four point lead.
Carryduff settled as the half progressed and scored two goals through surging runs from midfield. At the break the score was level at 0-8 to the home side and 2-2 to the visitors.
There was a quick re-assessment at the break from both players and managers. The second half started with some excellent football from the Bredagh boys as they took an early five point lead. Kevin Dornan returning from injury covered every blade of grass on the pitch and with Ben Scullion occupying the other midfield position the pair started to show their dominance. The Carryduff boys however weren’t going to lie down easily. Gavin McDonald in goals for the first time for the U16A squad was forced to make a number of saves including a stunning block at point blank range. This was followed by a number of excellent defensive clearances from the full back line of Diarmaid Kielty, Aidan O’Gorman and Michael Robinson. The half back line of Lorcan McMullan , Danny Robinson and Ryan McGarry picked up much more breaking ball and as the half progressed they curtailed the Carryduff attack. Kealen Devlin switched to the half forward line from where he made a clever run to score a very coolly taken goal. Tim Durkan at centre half forward made penetrating runs linking up well with Daniel Nolan and Michael Doran in the full forward line. As the game drew to a close Ben Scullion scored a fantastic goal to leave a margin of seven points in the end , a scoreline which slightly flattered the home side given the close nature of the hard fought contest.

Team and scorers

Gavin McDonald, Diarmaid Kielty, Aidan O’Gorman, Michael Robinson , Ryan McGarry , Lorcan McMullan, Danny Robinson , Ben Scullion(1-1), Kevin Dornan(0-1), Daniel Nolan(1-2), Tim Durkan(0-5), Kealen Devlin(1-0), Michael Doran (0-1),Jude Moreland (0-2), Jack Hollywood . Subs: John Mongan, David Malanaphy, Michael Woods, Joseph Shields, Stephen Dougal, Ciaran McFarland, Ronan McKegney

Coaches Comments:
The management team were happy with the second half performance particularly but realise that a lot of work will need to be done before these two sides meet again in the Championship semi-final at the beginning of August.

Cill Breactain 2-11 Bredagh 2-11
Wednesday 24th June 2009

Brilliant Ruairi denies Cill Breactain

The under 16B boys travelled to Cill Breactain last Wednesday evening with only 17 players and concerns they could be heading for defeat. These concerns were heightened when after only 10 minutes of play, with Cill Breactain leading by 6 points, Bredagh failing to finish 3 good point scoring opportunities. The Bredagh midfield pairing of John Mongan & Ruairi Sheridan stayed composed though and soon got a point each. Gavin McDonald, (playing at full forward), jumped the highest to catch the ball and setup Declan Magee who finished well by scoring another point. Seamus McCloskey then scored his trademark point from distance having won the ball in his own half. Cill Breactain came back at Bredagh and scored another 4 points without reply to finish 6 points ahead at the break.

For the second half Bredagh made three tactical changes with Ruairi Sheridan now playing half forward, Michael Robinson midfield and Dario Angelone halfback.
The moment of the match came early in the second half. Ruairi Sheridan won possession in midfield and began what can only describe as a brilliant run towards the Cill Breactain goal. Having taken on and beaten three Cill Breactain players Ruairi lashed an unstoppable shot low into their net, much to the appreciation of all spectators at the game. It was game on.

Cill Breactain are a physical team and it was great to see Aaron Maguire, Dario Angelone, Michael Woods, Daniel Steel and in particular Michael Robinson frustrating their opponents and keeping them at bay with strong tackling throughout and tight man marking. The team showed real grit with the full back line of Ciaran McFarland, Michael Deery and Michael Doran, keeping the pacy Cill Breactain forwards at bay.

From here on in Bredagh showed great resolve with the speedy Joe Shields and Lorcan Smylie each competing well in the half forward line and feeding the ball to Ruairi who scored another goal and three points. Seamus McCloskey & Gavin McDonald also hit a point each. Subs Luke McKenna & Kevin McCartney were introduced and also contributed well. Nonetheless Cill Breactain weren’t finished yet and began to claw back the Bredagh lead and with 2 minutes remaining on the clock were ahead by a point through a well taken goal and Bredagh again staring at defeat. However Michael Doran initiated one final free flowing move for Bredagh which resulted in Declan Magee scoring what was to be the point that drew the game.

Congratulations to both teams for delivering a fine game of football. The manager was very proud and delighted with the team’s performance. The workrate and positive attitude from all the lads was excellent against very tough opposition.

Bredagh-; Michael Woods, Ciaran McFarland, Michael Doran, Michael Deery, Dario Angelone, Michael Robinson, Daniel Steel, John Mongan(0-2), Ruairi Sheridan(2-4), Lorcan Smylie, Seamus McCloskey(0-2), Joe Shields, Aaron Maguire, Gavin McDonald(0-1), Declan Magee(0-2)

Loughinisland 4-04 v Bredagh 1-20
Wednesday 17th June 2009

As expected this was a totally different game than the league encounter week. Loughinisland started very strongly and played some fine football. Bredagh, in contrast started slowly and during the first half struggled to find the flowing football that they have played throughout this year. The Blues on the other hand continued to play the better football and built up a good a lead. Stand in keeper John Mongan was beaten twice in the first half as we went into the break in unknown territory trailing by 4 points with a score of 2-4 to 0-6.

The half time team talk was frank and open. Two tactical substitutions of players we had hoped not to use (Kevin Dornan and Lorcan Mc Mullan) were made and the team started the second half with a renewed vigour and the message “you only get one bite at the Championship” ringing in their ears.

Bredagh started the second half very strongly but registered 4 wides before the team started to play the flowing football they are noted for. During the next 25min period Bredagh scored 1-17 without reply. To their credit Loughinisland battled for every ball and they made a number of tactical switches to try and counter the Bredagh attack, but to no avail. Loughinisland’s endeavour was rewarded with 2 very late goals but it wasn’t enough to alter the outcome. Final score Loughinisland 4-4 Bredagh 1-20

Coaches comments: The coaches recognised how difficult it is to raise your game after a comfortable league win over the same opposition last week. This however was a very good learning experience for the boys and the general team discussion after the game centred on getting into the right frame of mind for every game. Everyone recognises that we are now entering the important part of the season when matches will only get tougher. Nevertheless Bredagh is still unbeaten this season and the boys deserve great credit for their continuing hard work and effort.

Scorers:
Kealan Devlin 0-4
Danny Nolan 0-6
Ben Scullion 0-2
Jack Holywood 1-3
Jude Moreland 0-4
Ryan McGarry 0-1
Tim Durkan 0-1
Michael Doran 0-1
Kevin Dornan 0-1

Loughinisland 2-5 Bredagh 4-14
Wednesday 10th June 2009

This was the first round of a double header against Loughinisland with the next game the 2nd round of the East Down Championship the following week.

The game started and within 10 seconds Bredagh were a point up with an exquisite point from the excellent Ben Scullion following a swift and direct 3 man move. There then followed a period of missed opportunities from the Belfast team. A period of sustained pressure from Bredagh brought points from Jack Hollywood, Daniel Nolan, Jude Moreland and Kealan Devlin. At this stage the Blues were kept to sporadic attacks due to the excellent defending from the superb Diarmaid Kielty, Danny Robinson and Ryan McGarry. Jack Hollywood then scored 3 goals, the first was an opportunistic punch over the keepers head from a breaking ball and the third a well work and well executed team goal. Three further points followed including one form stand in midfielder Tim Durkan. The half ended with the home side scoring their only point of the half.

Half Time Loughinisland 0-1 Bredagh 3-8

The second half started with the home team on the attack who scored 1-1 without reply and with their confidence up started to pick up the pace, the backs were now under pressure but they held out. Two further Bredagh points followed including one form Ciaran McFarland who came on as a sub for the injured David Malanphy. Again Loughinisland launched attack after attack and were rewarded with another goal. Then followed the score of the game, the impressive Aidan O’Gorman intercepted the ball at full back, three passes later the ball was dispatched for a three pointer by Tim Durkan, simple but highly effective football, next to score was Michael Doran who pointed for a well taken score. To the credit of the home team they kept coming at us, and except for a great tip round the post by keeper Conor McManus and a truly outstanding unorthodox block by Michael Woods the scores would have been closer. The game was drawing to a close but not before Michael Robinson stormed forward to register his first score of the season and emulate the scoring tally of his older brother.

Final score

Loughinisland 2-5 Bredagh 4-14

Coaches Comments:
This was the first round to Bredagh, but the boys can be assured that it will be tougher next week and we will need to take all the opportunities that come along. Thanks to parents who travelled and to Lorcan and Kevin on the sidelines for their support.

Bredagh 9-11 St Marys 3-8
Wednesday 3rd June 2009

The U16’s continued their unbeaten run in the league campaign with a convincing win over St Marys at Cherryvale on Wednesday evening.
The visitors who are a combination of Liatroim and Dromara were a strong physical side and opened the scoring with 1-1 within five minutes. The Bredagh side who were missing a number of key players through injury and exams took some time to settle as there were quite a few forced positional changes.
As the first half progressed the midfield pairing of Tim Durkan and Ben Scullion started to make penetrating runs interchanging the ball well with Daniel Nolan in the centre half forward position. This resulted in two well worked goals, the first from Tim Durkan and the second cleverly knocked in by John Morgan from a rebound off the upright after a brilliant low drive from Ben Scullion. In the backline Lorcan McMullan started to make his mark supported by Ryan McGarry in excellent form on the wing. The defensive unit confined the visitors to 1-3 for the half with Bredagh scoring 2-5 leaving a five point gap at the break.

They boys made a lazy start to the second half as the visitors narrowed the gap to one point. This proved to be a wakeup call and for the remaining 25 minutes the boys played some fantastic football scoring a total of 7-6 for that period. The large home crowd were entertained by free flowing football right from full back to Kealen Devlin at full forward where he won some excellent possession. He was well supported by Michael Doran in the left corner who scored a fine point himself. Ronan McKegney in the other corner secured possession well and fed the ball back to the advancing half forwards. Ben Scullion with advancing runs from midfield racked up a personal tally of 3-2 in fine performance.
All four subs were introduced and all made an early impression as there were a lot of weary legs given the fast pace of the game on a very warm evening.

Team and scorers

The management team were delighted with the team performance and the way some of the lads have had to quickly adjust to new positions during the exam period. They were especially pleased that the spine of the team showed strong character in the second half when the pressure started to mount.

Bredagh 4-8 Cill Dara 4-8
Wednesday 27th May 2009

The U16’s gained a hard fought draw away to Cill Dara on Wednesday night. The match was played in wet conditions on a very heavy pitch. The home side which is made up of Darragh Cross and Killyleagh were a big strong physical team and were well prepared for the visit of the Belfast boys. In the early exchanges it was clear that it was going to be a night to dig deep as the home side exerted their physical presence. As the Bredagh boys settled into the game Niall Irwin scored two well taken opportunist goals. Daniel Nolan , Ben Scullion , Jack Hollywood and Kevin Dornan added well worked hard fought points. The lads were however fortunate to go off at half time with a four point advantage as they failed to take control of the game. Cill Dara opened the second half well with early scores and closed the gap to one point. They also persisted in rough tackling which resulted in one of their players being sent off. Ronan McKegney and Michael Robinson were introduced and brought fresh legs into the game. As the second half progressed the backline were under consistent pressure with Aidan O’Gorman and Lorcan McMullan coming to the rescue on a number of occasions.
The last quarter was a dogged battle in which the Bredagh boys found it difficult to build any momentum to their play as each side exchanged scores to finish the game level.

Team and scorers

Connor McManus, Diarmaid Kielty, Aidan O’Gorman, Eoghan Curran, Ryan McGarry , Lorcan McMullan, David Malanaphy, Kevin Dornan(0-1 ), Ben Scullion(0-1), Jude Moreland , Daniel Nolan(0-4), Kealen Devlin, Niall Irwin(2-0), Jack Hollywood(1-1), John Mongan (1-1)
Subs (all used) Michael Robinson , Ronan McKegney

Coaches Comments:
The management team were disappointed with the overall performance even though the team were without a number of key players due to exams. This tough battle was however important experience for the lads as they build the team momentum for the remainder of the season ahead.

Bredagh 3-19 Saul 0-2
Wednesday 20th May 2009
The U16’s continued their unbeaten run in the league campaign with a convincing win over Saul at Cherryvale on Wednesday evening .
From the start the boys were showing their intentions with well taken early scores by Jack Hollywood at corner forward showing well for every ball as he notched up a personal tally of four points during the opening half. As the game progressed the boys put on an excellent display of team football entertaining the home crowd. They moved the ball at speed from corner back to the full forward line. The players worked tirelessly for each other giving an increasingly frustrated Saul team no time on the ball. This can be attributed to the hard work by the full backline of Diarmaid Kielty, Aidan O’Gorman and John Mongan and at half back by Lorcan McMullan in the centre flanked by Ryan McGarry and Jude Moreland on the wings. This combined defensive unit confined the opposition to a total of 2 points over the course of the game. In midfield, Kevin Dornan and Ben Scullion outplayed the Saul pairing. The forwards played very well together as a unit with some fine fast moving football notching up a final tally of three goals and nineteen points from eight scorers. The goals were scored by Tim Durkan , Daniel Nolan and team captain Kealen Devlin. He also demonstrated his versatility by sweetly striking a ‘45’ over the blackspot in heavy underfoot conditions.

The subs who were all introduced in the second half made a significant contribution to the game with Conor Francis also taking a fine point.

Team and scorers

Connor McManus, Diarmaid Kielty, Aidan O’Gorman, John Mongan , Ryan McGarry, Lorcan McMullan(0-1), Jude Moreland , Kevin Dornan(0-1) , Ben Scullion(0-1), Daniel Nolan(1-3), Tim Durkan(1-3), Kealen Devlin(1-4) , Ronan McKegney(0-1), Niall Irwin, Jack Hollywood(0-4), Subs (all used), Conor Francis (0-1) , Dario Angelone, Caolan Shablie

Coaches Comments:
The management team were delighted with the team performance given the very wet condition of the pitch and the way some of the lads have had to quickly adjust to new positions during the exam period.

Bredah 6-23 St Pauls 2-01
Wednesday 13th May 2009
Bredagh travelled to St Pauls on a high after their victory over Kilcoo in the league last week. In the pre-game talk the team was warned against complacency and the team was asked to play in the same high tempo manner as in the previous week's victory.

The Belfast boys started like an express train with Jack Holywood running the show at corner forward taking a succession of well worked points, this set the tone for the remainder of the first half. Bredagh controlled the game with the midfield pairing of Scullion and Dornan and the half forward trio of Nolan, Durkan and Devlin supplying great ball to forwards Niall Irwin, Jude Moreland and the irrepressible Jack Holywood. The back line was never really under any pressure but when they were they put in tackle after tackle to repel the St Pauls attacks. Half Time score St Pauls 1-1 Bredagh 2-14.

The second half started with both teams swapping 3 points but Bredagh quickly stamped their authority on the game with a further succession of well worked scores. St Pauls to their credit still tried to get back into the game but when the did get the ball forward were met by a maroon wall of Malanaphy, McMullan and McGarry at half back and a full back line of Kielty, O'Gorman and Curran with McManus in between the sticks. We had two subs who played a full part in this victory, Robinson and Mongan.

Final score 2-1 to 6-23

Scorers: Holywood 0-5, Durkan 1-5, Scullion 0-4, Devlin 0-2, Moreland 2-1 Irwin 2-0, McMullan 0-2, Mongan 0-2, Nolan 1-1, Dornan 0-1

Coaches Comments: this was a great display of quick passing and movement off the ball, but the players were told to put this game into the history banks and prepare for the next game. It was noted that the scores were spread across 10 of the 17 players used

Drumaness 5-13 Bredagh'B' 3-08
Wednesday 6th May 2009

Bredagh U-16’B’ footballers had their opening game of this year’s league campaign away to Drumaness on Wednesday evening.
The young Bredagh lads couldn’t have asked for a tougher start to the season against a very physical and talented Drumaness team on a heavy and wet evening in Pairc Naomh Cholmain.
The opening half was dominated by a very strong midfield pairing for Drumaness who made life difficult for the Bredagh backline as they carved there way through to within shooting distance scoring 2-04 in the first fifteen minutes. This would have deflated many teams but Bredagh remained resilient at the back with Michael Woods, Caolan Schablie, Ruairi Cumiskey and Michael Deery all working hard in defence. Bredagh’s motivation was rewarded with a period of sustained attack leading to four good points from Ruairi Sheridan (2 frees), Ronan McKegney and Joe Shields. Unfortunately this period of dominance by Bredagh wasn’t maintained and Drumaness pushed forward once again and added to their tally with some fine scores. Bredagh closed out the half with two great points from another Ruairi Sheridan free and a great point from play by the impressive Deccie Magee
The Bredagh lads learned from their first-half experience and closed down the Drumaness danger-men in the second half leading to a much tighter and lower scoring half. Scores were shared in the opening 15 minutes of the half with the Bredagh scores coming from Ruairi Sheridan (2-0) and John Mongan (0-2). Deccie Magee was a great target man at corner forward, getting out in front of his marker first to the ball and playing well controlled passes to forwards in better positions.
Following a further goal and a point from Drumaness, Bredagh ended the game on a high as Joe Shields netted a fabulous penalty after Michael Woods was unceremoniously pulled down in the penalty area.
This was a great demonstration of tenacity and character from a Bredagh team who battled through to the end of the game, frustrating their opponents and ending up drawing the second-half.
Well done to all the players for a great effort.

Bredagh 5-09 Kilcoo 3-08
Wednesday 6th May 2009
The U16’s recorded a fantastic victory against old rivals Kilcoo at Cherryvale on Wednesday night with a fantastic seven point winning margin. The boys got off to an excellent start with early points from Tim Durkan, Kealen Devlin and a very well taken goal from Jack Hollywood. However Kilcoo showed how dangerous they are with three points in quick succession. As the pressure mounted the home side stepped up a gear with Kevin Dornan and Ben Scullion competing fiercely for every kickout to curtail the key aerial threats from Kilcoo. They provided some quality passes to the half forward line with Tim Durkan, Kealen Devlin and Daniel Nolan all in excellent form. This constant pressure on the Kilcoo backline resulted in a penalty which was fired calmly to the corner of the net by Kealen Devlin. The boys finished off the half with some fine interchanges of play resulting in points from David Malanaphy , Ben Scullion and Daniel Nolan.
Although the Bredagh boys went off at halftime with a nine point margin they did not get complacent as they knew that Kilcoo had the potential to wipe out that advantage within minutes of the restart. At the start of the second half the boys knew they had a battle on their hands as they faced a stiff breeze and driving rain. However on this occasion it was the Bredagh boys who made the explosive start with three excellent early goals scored by Tim Durkan , Kealen Devlin and Ben Scullion.
It was at this stage that the Bredagh backline also started to dominate as this Kilcoo side were not going to accept defeat easily. In goals Conor McManus made some fantastic saves. In the fullback line Diarmaid Kielty, Aodhan O’Gorman and Eoghan Curran worked tirelessly for each other competing fiercely for every ball. The half backline of Daniel Robinson, Lorcan McMullan and Ryan McGarry dug deep with some brilliant interceptions to starve the Kilcoo forward line of any real quality ball.
Niall Irwin and Stephen Dougal were introduced to the forward line late in the half where they gained vital possession to ease the pressure on the backline.

The Kilcoo lads fought to the end but were unable to compete on the night with the fantastic home team performance from the full squad of seventeen players.

Team and scorers
Connor McManus, Diarmaid Kielty, Daniel Robinson (0-1), Eoghan Curran, Ryan McGarry, Lorcan McMullan, Aodhan O’Gorman, Ben Scullion(1-1), Kevin Dornan, Daniel Nolan(0-1), Tim Durkan(1-3), Kealen Devlin (2-2), David Malanaphy(0-1) ,
Jack Hollywood (1-0), Jude Moreland
Subs(all used) Niall Irwin, Stephen Dougal

Coaches Comments:
The management team were delighted with the overall team performance on the night. The workrate from all the lads was very impressive against very tough opposition. However the management team emphasised to the lads that there will be some very tough away matches ahead as the season progresses.

Bredagh 3-14 Castlewellan 1-09
Saturday 26th April 2009
To coin a phrase, this was a game of two halves.
The first;
Bredagh started the game well and built up a lead, but the play was flat, the pace of the game was too slow and gradually Castlewellan grew in confidence and started to get to grips with the game, Bredagh couldn’t string three passes together. No one in a maroon shirt was playing anywhere near their potential, passes went astray chances came and went and the opposition got closer. At half-time Bredagh had a two point lead at 1-6 to 0-7, this could have easily have been a deficit if it wasn’t for a point blank save by keeper Conor McManus.

The management let the players take the half time talk, they discussed the problems in a open and honest manner and decided the way to rectify the problems.

The second;
The boys responded immediately, a quick break from half way by Ben Scullion who fed Jack Holywood, who passed the ball to the on rushing Kealan Devlin who dispatched the ball to the back of the net, fast flowing football at its best, this set the tempo for the remainder of the game. The half back line of Malanaphy, McMullan, and Shields, who replaced the injured Ryan McGarry, repelled most Castlewellan attacks and any that did get past had a full back line of brothers Danny and Michael Robinson and Eoghan Curran to deal with. The Bredagh Midfield of Scullion and Doran were majestic and withstood everything that was thrown at them. The Half forwards of Daniel Nolan, Jack Holywood and Stevie Dougal added score after score, and the tireless full forward line of Kealan Devlin, Ciaran McFarland and Daniel Steel interchanged at every opportunity.

Final score, 3-14 to 1-9.

Scorers; K Devlin 1-1, J Holywood 2-2, S Dougal 0-2, B Scullion 0-3, D Nolan 0-3, K Doran 0-2, J Shields 0-1

Coaches comments; The second half again showed the quality of football that this team is capable of, and need to produce if they are to challenge for honours this season

Bredagh 4-15 Bryansford 0-2
Saturday 18th April 2009
The U16’s got their league campaign off to a promising start with a convincing win over Bryansford at Cherryvale on Saturday evening. The visitors fielded a weakened side as a number of their lads had gone to the Down U21 match.
From the start the boys were showing their intentions with well taken early scores from Jude Moreland, Tim Durkan and Kealen Devlin. As the game progressed the boys put on an excellent display of team football entertaining the home crowd. The players worked tirelessly for each other giving a dismayed Bryansford team no time on the ball. This can be attributed to the hard work by the full backline of Diarmaid Kielty, Daniel and Michael Robinson and at half back by Lorcan McMullan in the centre flanked by Ryan McGarry and Aidan O’Gorman on the wings. This combined defensive unit confined the opposition to a total of 2 points. In midfield, Kevin Dornan and Ben Scullion outplayed the Bryansford pairing. The six forwards played very well together as a unit with some fine fast moving football with a final tally of four goals and fifteen points.

Team and scorers
Connor McManus, Diarmaid Kielty, Daniel Robinson, Michael Robinson, Ryan McGarry, Lorcan McMullan(0-1), Aidan O’Gorman, Kevin Dornan, Ben Scullion, Daniel Nolan(0-3), Tim Durkan(1-5),Jack Hollywood(1-2), Michael Doran, Kealen Devlin (2-3), Jude Moreland
Subs (all used) John Mongan, David Malanaphy(0-1), Niall Irwin, Eoghan Curran

Coaches Comments:
The management team were delighted with the team performance particularly with the way the younger lads have integrated so well into the team. They also realise however that there will be tougher battles ahead with Castlewellan away and Kilcoo at home over the next two weeks.

Bredagh 4-07 Clann Eireann 0-06
March 18th 2009
Bredagh's u16 footballers had their first outing of the season against County Armagh team Clann Eireann. We had only had 2 training sessions and were a little rusty, this gave the opposition the upper hand allowing them to race into a 0-5 to 0-0 advantage and looked totally in control. Bredagh started to get their act together with tackle after tackle going in from Ryan McGarry, Aidan O’Gorman, Danny Steel, Michael Woods, Danny and Michael Robinson restricting them to sporadic attacks. We started hitting them on the break and a surging run by midfielder Tim Durkan resulted in a penalty which was coolly put away by Kealan Devlin. This gave the boys confidence and they scored another 3 points shortly after when an alert Stevie Dougle pounced on a double save by the keeper to fire into the net. Bredagh keeper Connor McManus pulled off a great save and deflected a goal bound effort over the bar, this was to be Clann Eireinns last score of the game.

Bredagh now playing down the hill in the second half continued fast flowing football, with Lorcan McMullan and Tim Durkan dominating in midfield, Daniel Nolan pulling the strings at centre half forward, scoring 1-1, and Michael Doran giving an outstanding performance at corner forward meant that Bredagh launched attack after attack to which the opposition had no answer to.
Final Score Clann Eireann 0-06 Bredagh 4-7. Scorers Kealan Devlin 2-1 Stevie Dougal 1-1 Danny Robinson 1-1 Jude Moorland 0-1 Lorcan McMullan 0-2 Aidan O’Gorman 0.1.

The coaches were delighted with the quality of play and discipline showed by the entire team on their first outing of the year

Bredagh v Kilmacud Crokes

Bredagh 0-11 Saul 1-03
Tuesday 8th July 2008
The U16’s continued their recent run of form with a home win against Saul on Tuesday 8th July. Due to the holiday season the management team were forced to field a much changed side from the one that played in the disappointing away fixture when the boys were fairly heavily defeated. With home advantage the lads played some excellent football in the midfield / back line area and worked the ball forward with controlled short passing . It wasn’t however until the second half that they started to convert this effort into scores when they slotted over a total of eight points after managing just three in the first half.
There will be a break now for a few weeks before returning to start training for a very difficult championship semi-fixture fixture against Liatroim/Dromara in early August.
Full details will be available on the Website as soon as they are published

St Josephs 0-0 Bredagh 5-12
Tuesday 27th May 2008
The Bredagh U16 Boys continued their league campaign with a convincing victory over St Joseph’s (Ballykinlar/Dundrum) at Dundrum on Tuesday night.

Despite having to field a young team due to the older boys doing exams, the lads played some excellent football and had put this game beyond reach by half-time. The full back line played as a tight unit with Aodhan O’Gorman, Daniel Robinson and Eoghan Curran combining to keep the opposition scoreless for the 60 minute period.

At half back, Michael Moynagh, Ciaran Fitzpatrick and Ben McCaughey(captain) picked up a lot of breaking ball from the midfield pairing of David Malanaphy and Ben Scullion. Ben Scullion and David Malanaphy worked tirelessly at midfield and made a number of surging runs to slot over some fine scores.

Kealen Devlin moved out to centre half forward where he had an excellent game and scored some well taken points. He was flanked by Damhan Farmer and Daniel Nolan on the wings. The full forward line of Jack Hollywood, Brian Cunningham and Niall Irwin showed a lot of movement throughout the game causing endless problems for the St Joseph’s defence.

In summary, this was another fine display of teamwork with fast moving quality passing throughout the game from full-back to full-forward.

The management were keen to point out however at the end of the match that there are a number of areas which the lads need to work at on the training ground as they face much tougher games in the coming weeks.

Bredagh 4-9 Darragh Cross 0-4
Tuesday 20th May 2008
The Bredagh U16 Boys got their championship campaign off to a fine start with a convincing victory over Darragh Cross on Tuesday night(20th May).
The management team were forced to field a 4th year team due to the older boys doing exams. Although the boys faced a much more physically strong Darragh Cross team they displayed some excellent passing and build-up play culminating in well taken goals from Daniel Nolan, Jack Hollywood(2) and Michael Doran. The full back line were superb with Aodhan O’Gorman, Daniel Robinson and Eoghan Curran combining to confine the opposition to four points for the 60 minute period.
At half back, Michael Moynagh, Ciaran Fitzpatrick and Ben McCaughey(captain) fought hard to pick up breaking ball from the midfield pairing of David Malanaphy and Ben Scullion. The half back line combined with midfield to make surging runs resulting in well taken points from Ben Scullion, David Malanaphy and Ben McCaughey.
Tim Durkan had a superb game at centre half forward and was flanked by Jack Hollywood and Daniel Nolan on the wings. The full forward line of Michael Doran, Kealen Devlin and Niall Irwin won some hard fought possession and distributed the ball well to the other advancing players.
In summary, this was an excellent display of teamwork with quality passing throughout the game from corner back to corner forward.
The boys realise however that there will be a tougher battle ahead as they progress to the next round.

Saul 4-10 Bredagh 1-6
Tuesday 6th May 2008
Bredagh played an away league match against a very strong Saul side on Tuesday night. Although the boys battled hard they found it very difficult to sustain the constant pressure from a much more physically strong Saul side. The Bredagh boys fought hard with some excellent displays from Ben Scullion, Emmet Costello and Kealen Devlin. This Saul side includes the core of the U14 team which was narrowly beaten in last year’s championship semi-final by Kilcoo. The Bredagh team on the night included 11 of last year’s U14 squad and although they are finding these games tough the experience will prove invaluable as we build a strong panel for next year.

East Down 'A' League Champions
Bredagh 3-14 Liaotrom 0-4 A comprehensive victory which brought the under 16 league title back to Bredagh for the first time in 10 years, the perfect consolation after the disappointment of a championship defeat some two days earlier. A point from Conor McCluskey in the first minute set Bredagh on their way and when the same player netted for the only goal of the half, the home side were in real difficulty, trailing by the end of the half 0-4 to Bredagh's 1-9. Bredagh's domination continued in the second half with scores coming from backs, midfielders and forwards. The highlight was a cracking goal from Damham Farmer who went on a surging run before sending an unstoppable shot from all of 25 yards past the helpless Laiotrom keeper. With Laoitrom held scoreless for the whole of the second half, Bredagh ran out comfortable winners by 19 points. It was a delighted Michael Magee the captain who accepted the league trophy, having led his team to a fantastic 100% record over the season. All 25 players deserve credit for their contribution to the teams success; success that augers well for the future of the club. Scorers: Conor McCluskey (1-4), Marcus Young (1-0), Damham Farmer (1-0), Ciaran Fitzpatrick (0-2), Donal Hughes (0-2), Jimmy McCaffery (0-2), Damien Moreland, Donal McKegney, Paddy Hannity and Declan O'Hara (0-1 each)

Bredagh 2-12 Bryansford 3-7
26/06/07 Championship Quarter Final

A classic championship encounter this, with a fantastic Bredagh team showing an abundance of character, determination and skill, overcoming a fancied Bryansford side to advance to the semi finals.
An early 3-point lead for Bryansford was wiped out when a lobbing ball from Marcus Young forced the Bryansford keeper to back peddle over his goal line to draw Bredagh level. End to end play from then until the end of the half saw the sides remain level at half time 1-6 to 1-6, the Bredagh points coming from Donal Hughes (0-2), Niall Wright, Mark Kelly, Marcus Young and Ciaran Fitzpatrick.
When Bryansford scored two early second half goals (the second from a penalty) to take a six point lead, we saw the true character of this young Bredagh team. With heroes all over the field and points coming from Ruairi Johnston, Declan O’Hara, Donal Hughes (0-2), Niall Wright and Marcus Young, with just a solitary point in reply from visitors, we were all set for a grandstand finish. And a grandstand finish we got, when Marcus Young scored a great goal to put a totally dominant Bredagh two points up. The final whistle was greeted with delight among players, coaches and supporters with all the players used and the supportive subs deserving particular praise for a job brilliantly done.
Our task now, of course, is to go on from this great victory and bring the championship back to Bredagh. Certainly an achievable goal but one which will require as much, if not more effort than was necessary in this game.

St.Johns 0-4 Bredagh 1-20
Sunday 10/06/07
This delayed encounter proved to be well and truly over at half time with Bredagh having built up a massive 14 point lead (1-13 to 0-2).
In the sweltering heat it was not surprising that the boys eased up in the second half but all the players used deserve credit for a job well done and for getting our championship campaign off to such an impressive start.
Scorers: Marcus Young (1-2), Donal Hughes (0-5), Niall Wright (0-5), Ciaran Fitzpatrick (0-2), Mark Kelly (0-2), Jimmy McCaffery (0-2), Conal Devlin (0-1) and Conor McCluskey (0-1).

Ardglass 0-1 Bredagh 4-22
Tuesday 12/06/07
With this game coming just two days after our championship encounter and with a number of players missing due to exams and other commitments, Bredagh were thankful for what turned out to be limited opposition from a completely overwhelmed Ardglass side. The boys can only play the team that turns out in front of them, however, and deserve credit for a performance that delivered many of the training and practise drills they have been practising Sunday after Sunday.
Scorers: Niall Wright (3-3), Mark Kelly (0-4), Marcus Young (0-3), Ciaran Fitzpatrick (0-3), Donal Hughes, Damhan Farmer, Conal Devlin and Declan O’Hara (0-2 each), Charlie McGrath (0-1) and Pearse Leitch-yes, Pearse Leitch! (1-0).

Bredagh 3-7 Liatrom 0-5
Tuesday 05/06/07
Another easy victory for a superior Bredagh side who dominated from start to finish, leading 2-11 to 0-3 at half time and eventually out winners by 21 points.
Perhaps the most pleasing aspect for the coaches was the fact that a total of 9 players got on the score sheet; Niall Wright (1-3), Conal Devlin (0-5), Jimmy McCaffery (1-1), Donal McKegney (with his 2nd goal in successive weeks), Ciaran Fitzpatrick (0-3), Marcus Young (1-2), Declan O’Hara and Paddy Hannitty with points a piece.

Loughanisland 0-7 Bredagh 1-8
Tuesday 22/05/07
After an easy victory over Carryduff the previous week, the lads found Loughanisland to be much tougher opposition in this evenly matched encounter.
Thanks to a rare goal from Donal McKegney from all of 30 yards out (surely he was going for a point!) and points from the in form Donal Hughes (0-2), Marcus Young, and Jimmy McCaffery, Bredagh held a narrow 2-point (1-4 to 0-5) lead at half time.
The half time talk certainly worked wonders, as a tremendously gutsy display from all players from all players used, saw Bredagh going into the final minutes with a 1-7 to 0-7 lead (points from Conal Devlin, Donal Hughes and Marcus Young). Loughanisland surged forward on numerous occasions in an effort to get an equalising goal but a heroic defence hold out and in the dying seconds Jimmy McCaffery sealed a great game for Bredagh with the final score.

Bredagh 7-20 Carryduff 0-1
15 May 2007
Little to be gained from this away encounter in which Bredagh overwhelmed their rivals from start to finish. Some twelve of the nineteen players used managed to get on the scoresheet, with Donal Hughs starring with a personal tally of 2-5. Other scorers were Conor Mc Cluskey 1-3 (this goal being particularly impressive, after a great catch and a storming 30 yard run), Mark Kelly marking his competitive debut with two goals, Conal Devlin 1-1, Damhan Farmer 0-3, Marcus Young 1-1, Niall Wright 0-2, Kieran Fitzpatrick and Patrick Hannitty 0-1 each, and defenders Emmett Costello, Pearse Leitch and Damian Moreland also managing to get on the scoresheet with points apiece.
Much tougher challenges ahead no doubt, but full credit to the boys for an impressive all round performance.

Bredagh 5-9, Teconnaught 6-3

U-16 Football Tuesday 02 May 2007
If our boys thought the hard work was done with victory over Downpatrick last week, then Teconnaught had other ideas in this terrific encounter at Cherryvale.
Two goals down within 5 minutes of the start, Bredagh eventually settled down and had cut the deficit to 2 points thanks to a goal from Jimmy McCaffery and points from Marcus Young and Conal Devlin (from a penalty), only for Teeconnaught to increase their lead with two further goals. Further points from Conor McCluskey, Marcus Young and the inspirational Michael Magee left Bredagh relieved to be only four points behind at half time at 4-0 to1-5.
With a number of substitutions and positional changes for the second half, Bredagh began to take control and they drew level with a goal and a point from Conor McCluskey and a point from Declan O’Hara. When Jimmy McCaffery found the back of the net minutes later, it seemed Bredagh were on their way, but Teeconnaught refused to throw in the towel and kept the result in doubt right to the finish.
The final whistle came as a massive relief for both players and coaches but full credit to the full panel of players for a magnificent effort in the face of sustained pressure from the visitors.

Scorers: Jimmy McCaffery (2-0), Conor McCluskey (1-2), Marcus Young (1-2), Michael Magee (1-1), Conal Devlin (0-2) and Declan O’Hara (0-2)

Downpatrick 0-4 Bredagh 2-4
Under 16 FL - Date Tue, 24th April 2007
Bredagh followed up an easy win over Drumaness with a hard-fought
win in Downpatrick in the East Down under 16 league on Tuesday
night. This was a tense affair in wet conditions with the character
of the team securing two important league points.Conall Devlin
opened the score after some strong running and Donal Hughes doubled
the score from 40 metres. The home side replied through Slavin but
the defence was dominant and fought like demons to deny space to the
Downpatrick forwards.Ruairi Johnson powered his way through from
half-back to set up Jimmy Mc Caffrey for the point of the game and
Bredagh hit a purple patch. Damien Moreland intercepted a through
ball, played a one-two before sending in a high ball which rebounded
to Niall Wright-the inevitable result was the net bulging to leave
Bredagh 5 ahead at half-time.The third quarter was all Downpatrick
with only superb defending by Pearse Leitch, Decky O'Hara and Donal
Mc Kegney restricting Downpatrick to 3 further points.Every game has
a turning point and this epic was no exception- a double save by
Paddy Woods and captain Michael Magee saw Bredagh sweep down the
field and Donal Hughes sweeped over another long range point. Good
work by Paddy Hannity, Ciaran Fitzpatrick and Marcus Young saw Conor
Mc Closkey fouled in the large square- Conor buried the penalty and
the ref called full time.A good win from an excellent team and great

Teconnaght 1-6 Bredagh 1-7
League, Tuesday July 25th - Bredagh opened sharply and Donal Hughes found the net on five minutes after fine soccer skills by Sean Irwin. Conal Mahon-O'Neil drove through from midfield and fired over a point with his left foot. Teconnaght then netted from the penalty spot. Christian Hunter popped over a nice point just before the break to leave the half time score Teconnaght 1-2 Bredagh 1-3.
Second-half: Bredagh struggled to win any kick-outs but battled hard for possession and points from Michael Magee, Sean Irwin and Conal O'Neill saw them keep their narrow advantage. The defence battled hard to keep out Teconnaght and in goals the impressive Sean Armstrong won applause from his opponents for his rock-solid display under the high ball. With five minutes left Patrick Woods fired over what proved to be the winning point and Bredagh held out for a narrow but deserved victory after a fine fighting display.
Squad: Sean Armstrong, Michael Guerin, Michael Mc Allister, Ben Mccaughey, Michael Magee, Declan O'Hara, Niall Wright, Conal M O'Neill, Niall Nolan, Dermot Colton, Sean Irwin, Chrisitian Hunter, Donal Hughes, Patrick Woods, Marcus Young, Conor Mc Cluskey, Daniel Nolan.

Bredagh 1-8 Carryduff 2-10
League, Tuesday June 27th - a disappointing result against a much sharper Carryduff side who raced into a seven point lead and who could have been further ahead had it not been for a number of wasted efforts and some heroic defending by Michael Magee. A goal by Sean Irwin brought Bredagh right back into it however and by half time the scores were level at 1-4 each. It was a similar story in the second half with Carryduff again building up a six point lead only for Bredagh to cut the deficit to three before getting a great opportunity to draw level from a penalty. When Sean Irwin’s effort went wide, Bredagh’s chances of snatching something from the game disappeared.
Roll on the championship!

Scorers: Sean Irwin 1-1, Niall Nolan 0-4, Conal Devlin 0-2, Peter Graham 0-1.

Ardglass 0-1 Bredagh 6-21
Championship, Tuesday June 6th - Bredagh cruised to victory in the first round of the championship with their best display of the season. As the scoreline suggests Bredagh were on top in every part of the field, with scores flowing from all the forwards. Highlights of the first half were a series of well constructed points and two 'bombing' goals from Sean Irwin and Conal M-O'Neill. The second-half produced more of the same, with the coaches trying out some positional changes. Declan O'Hara scored three fine points from his new position at right-half-forward, Mark 'Tyrone' McLaughlin opened his Bredagh account with a fine goal and he lobbed over a point for good measure, while starlet Conor McCloskey weighed in with 1-1 and proceedings ended with Michael Magee and Donal McKegney firing over two long range points. A real good team performance with Michael McAllister and Conal M-O'Neill the real powerhouses behind this fine win. Even coaches McCloskey and Canavan were pleased with the effort!
Team & Scorers: Sean Armstrong, Michael Magee 0-1, Michael McAllister 0-2, Pearse Leitch, Declan O'Hara 0-3, Donal McKegney 0-1, Conal Devlin 0-1, Cormac Hughes, Conal M-O'Neill 1-0, Donal Hughes 0-1, Niall Nolan 0-5, Sean Irwin 3-1, Peter Graham 0-3, Patrick Hannity 0-2, Niall Wright 0-2, Mark McLaughlin 1-1, Conor McCluskey 1-1.

Derrytresk 4-3 Bredagh 4-13
Challenge, Sunday June 4th - our Tyrone hosts welcomed us to their magnificent facilities but they fielded a smaller, younger side who were no match for our lads. Bredagh built up a commanding nine-point lead by half time with scores from Sean Irwin (2-3), Niall Wright (0-3) and Donal Hughes (0-1). There was also a point for impressive newcomer Conal Mahon O’Neill. A number of experimental switches disrupted Bredagh’s dominance for a time in the second half and several scores helped Derrytresk get back in the game (Sean Irwin will no doubt wish to score goals rather than stop them in the number one jersey!). Bredagh gradually regained the upper hand, however, and in addition to points from regular forwards Niall Wright and Donal Hughes, we had the rare sight of Ryan McAlinden scoring two points, and the even rarer sight of goalkeeper turned full-forward Sean Armstrong scoring 1-1 (will he ever let us forget that goal!). And, to cap the morning off, an Under-16 first - a goal from an equally surprised Pearse Leitch! Team selection will no doubt return to a more familiar line up in weeks to come but a useful exercise nevertheless. Our thanks to Derrytresk who provided much appreciated post match refreshments for players, coaches and travelling parents alike.

Drumaness 2-2 Bredagh 5-8
League, Tuesday May 30th - opting to play with a strong wind in their favour, Bredagh built up what proved to be a winning half-time lead of sixteen points. A Niall Nolan pointed free was followed by a succession of scores from Conal Devlin (1-0), Donal Hughes (1-1), Niall Wright (1-2) and Sean Irwin (1-1), with only a solitary point in reply from Drumaness, making it 4-5 to 0-1 at the break. Scores were more difficult to come by in the second-half as Drumaness came more into the game. A mis-hit kick out by Sean Armstrong was spectacularly returned to an empty net by a quick thinking Drumaness forward to give the home team a glimmer of hope but further scores from Peter Graham (0-1), Sean Irwin (0-1), Niall Wright (1-0) and Paddy Hannity (0-1), along with great defensive work by Donal McKegney and Pearse Leitch, left Bredagh comfortable winners.

Bredagh 5-13 Loughinisland 0-4
League, Tuesday May 23rd - this was a convincing victory by a superior Bredagh side who were never really in any danger of losing against opponents Loughanisland at Cherryvale. The lads had already scored four points without reply through Peter Graham (0-2), Sean Irwin and Paddy Woods when goal poacher supreme Sean Irwin really finished the game as a contest with three cracking goals in quick succession. Further points by the lively Peter Graham and Dermot Colton left Bredagh with a commanding half-time lead (3-6 to 0-1). The introduction by the team coaches of a number of substitutes didn’t disrupt Bredagh’s dominance in the second half and a succession of scores from Peter Graham (0-1), Niall Nolan (0-2), Niall Wright (1-2) and Bredagh’s star player on the night Conal Devlin (1-2) left Bredagh impressive winners by a 24-point margin.
Players Used: Sean Armstrong, Declan O’Hara, Michael McAlister, Michael Magee, Ryan McAlinden, Donal McKegney, Conal Devlin, Niall Nolan, Cormac Hughes, Donal Hughes, Peter Graham, Dermot Colton, Niall Wright, Paddy Woods, Sean Irwin, Pearse Leitch, Michael Guerin, Marcus Young, Paddy Hannity, Mark McLaughlin (Rowan Blaney not selected due to injury).

Liatroim 0-6 Bredagh 2-8
League, Tuesday May 16th - this was a much sharper performance from a hungrier Bredagh side who in the end comfortably overcame their opponents after a fine encounter. Although early points from Cormac Hughes and Sean Irwin were matched by Liatroim, Bredagh took control of the game with two impressive goals scored in quick succession by Donal Hughes, with a fine fisted effort, and Sean Irwin after a surging run. Bredagh's first-half scoring finished with a point from Niall Wright to give them a five point lead at the break. Bredagh's dominance continued in the second-half and although Liatroim got three further points on the scoreboard, points from Niall Wright, Dermot Colton, Niall Nolan, Peter Graham and Conal Devlin left Bredagh convincing winners. Overall, this was a promising performance from all those who took part with Niall Nolan, Peter Graham and Ryan McAlinden being particularly impressive.
Team: Sean Armstrong, Pearse Leitch, Michael McAlister, Declan O'Hara, Ryan McAlinden, Donal McKegney, Conal Devlin, Niall Nolan, Dermot Colton, Cormac Hughes, Peter Graham, Donal Hughes, Sean Irwin, Paddy Woods, Niall Wright. Subs: Christian Hunter, Marcus Young, Paddy Hannity, Rowan Blaney, Mark McLaughlin.

Bredagh 2-7 Teconnaught 0-8
League, Tuesday May 9th - the scoreline doesn’t really tell the true story of this second League outing as a previously beaten Teconnaught side matched Bredagh for much of the game. Indeed had it not been for a somewhat fortunate goal by Donal Hughes eight minutes from the end, the outcome would have been much less certain. A well-taken Sean Irwin goal enabled Bredagh to open up a three-point lead towards the end of the first half but a spirited response by Teconnaught in the closing minutes allowed them to reduce the deficit to a point by the end of the half. Two early points allowed Teconnaught to take a second half lead but three successive points by the hard-working Paddy Woods regained the lead for Bredagh. Then came that Donal Hughes goal, but Bredagh were unable to press home their advantage, apart from a solitary point from the same player. A first win in the League campaign but room for improvement certainly.
Panel: Sean Armstrong, Pearse Leitch, Michael McAlister, Michael Magee, Ryan McAlinden, Declan O’Hara, Cormac White, Niall Nolan, Dermot Colton, Conal Devlin, Niall Wright, Conal Doherty, Christian Hunter, Paddy Woods, Sean Irwin, Paddy Hannity, Marcus Young, Donal McKegney, Cormac Hughes, Donal Hughes, Rowan Blaney.

Carryduff 1-9 Bredagh 2-5
League, Tuesday April 25th - Bredagh suffered a narrow defeat in this opening League fixture. They started off in bright style and rocked the home team with an opening salvo of two goals scored by Cormac Hughes and Sean Irwin. Paddy Woods weighed in with two points and Conal Devlin also pointed to leave the score at half-time: Carryduff 0-4 Bredagh 2-3. However, the second-half told a different story with the fired up Carryduff side reeling off a series of unanswered points. Bredagh couldn't manage any decent possession and scored only one point from play, by full-forward Paddy Woods. A couple of missed frees proved very costly, but all is not doom and gloom as Carryduff are a fine side and they know Bredagh pushed them to the very limit. If all the players take a lead from the impressive Michael Magee then this team can challenge for silverware. Although the second-half performance was poor, the performance of Michael 'Diddles'Magee was a target all the Bredagh players should aim for.
Panel: Sean Armstrong, Michael Magee, Michael McAllister, Declan O'Hara, Ryan McAlinden, Donal McKegney, Cormac White, Cormac Hughes, Niall Nolan, Dermot Colton, Peter Graham, Conall Devlin, Donal Hughes, Patrick Woods, Sean Irwin, Niall Wright, Conall Doherty, Pearse Leitch, Michael Guerin, Christian Hunter, Patrick Hannity, Rowan Blaney.

PRE-SEASON FRIENDLIES
Sunday February 26th, Bredagh 1-3 St Galls 3-12 -
a much fitter and physically stronger St Galls side proved too good for Bredagh in this early season challenge. Bredagh actually started the livelier side and launched a stream of attacks but these proved fruitless as the wayward shooting by our forwards perhaps highlighted the teams lack of match practice. In contrast, St Galls got into their stride and knocked over four points and then scored a sharply-taken goal. Bredagh replied with a goal when Sean Irwin directed the ball into the net after Niall Nolan's effort came off a post. St Galls pulled away again and led at half-time by 2-8 to 1-0. After the break, St Galls continued to pile on the pressure and ran out easy winners. Bredagh’s three points were scored by Donal Hughes, Peter Graham and Niall Nolan. So, lots of food for thought for the team mentors but it is by no means a doom and gloom situation given the early season nature of the encounter and the fact that St Galls are as good a side as we are likely to face in the season to come.

Sunday March 5th, Bredagh 2-10 St Enda's 1-5 - Bredagh gained their first victory of the season at Cherryvale with a much-improved display against St Enda's. 24 players turned out for the match played over three 20 minute periods (each player getting a minimum 20 minutes pitch time). This great turn out was very encouraging for the coaches who used this game to experiment with several positional changes. Best for Bredagh were Sean Irwin who weighed in with two goals, the galloping Peter Graham who hit five points from play, Cormac Hughes who thumped over two mighty points from nearly 40 metres and Niall Nolan who dominated midfield and gave some excellent possession to the forwards.

Sunday March 26th, Bredagh 2-9 St Brigid's 2-7 - Bredagh recorded a narrow victory over St Brigid's in an entertaining friendly. A strong breeze aided Bredagh in the first half and they moved the ball well from midfield. The forwards took some excellent scores though the best was a cracking point by half-back Michael Magee. Full-forward Matthew 'Cabbage' Mullan weighed in with an opportunist goal and Dermot Colton also goaled after fine work by Paddy Hannity. Other scores came from Niall Nolan (0-3), Sean Irwin (0-2), and Cormac Hughes after a well-worked short 45. Half-time score: Bredagh 2-7 St Brigid's 0-3. Playing into the breeze was a different story. St Brigid's goaled straight from the restart, though Bredagh then worked the ball well upfield with good interchange passing between Cormac Hughes, Niall Nolan, Dermot Colton and Peter Graham. The move ended with Cormac Hughes taking a fine point. St Brigid's scrambled another goal and rattled off three points before Peter Graham replied. Christian Slater went close on two occasions and Bredagh clung on for a narrow victory.
Team: Sean Armstrong, Dermot Colton, Peter Graham, Michael Guerin, Paddy Hannity, Cormac Hughes, Donal Hughes, Christian Hunter, Sean Irwin, Pearse Leitch, Michael Magee, Matthew Mullan, Ryan McAlinden, Donal McKegney, Niall Nolan, Declan O'Hara, Cormac White and Mark McLaughlin.
Coaches Comments: some good midfield and forward play, Donal McKegney was imperious at centre-half-back, Michael Magee is going to give coaching lessons to the team in the art of blocking. With Paddy Woods and Conal Devlin injured, there was a lack of height in the team, and also with Niall Wright unavailable and a few no-shows, the squad was down to the bare minimum. To compete at this level we need a bigger squad and a better turn-out.
