Clonduff Tournament
Saturday 14th June 2008

It was long after five o’clock on Saturday afternoon when the exhausted players, mentors and supporters of the Bredagh Under 8 football squad got back to Belfast from the Clonduff Tournament. But when they did they had the winner’s cup and medals tucked away in their kit bags.

The boys took on and beat the best Down and Ulster had to offer by winning the competition for the first time in a day which will live long in the memories of everyone who was there. The morning began with a game against Clan Eireann, the Lurgan team which has become the standard against which everyone else is judged at this age group. Bredagh ran them close and competed in all areas of the field before losing out by a single point. That excellent performance was a sign of things to come.

They went through the rest of the group section unbeaten, chalking up wins against Clonduff B, Ballyholand and Drumgath and playing out an exciting draw with Warrenpoint. After an anxious wait, the news emerged that Bredagh had qualified on scoring average for the knock-out stages of the premier Cup competition – an achievement in itself – along with their old rivals Clann Eireann.

A quarter-final win over Shane O’Neill’s was followed by an equally comprehensive semi-final victory over Bryansford. By this stage the boys’ tails were up and the prospect of revenge over Clann Eireann in the final became a reality.

The final itself was a hard-fought contest characterised by some excellent football from both sides. Bredagh’s game plan worked out perfectly with their dominance at midfield allowing them to play high balls over the top of the Lurgan defence and let the sharp-shooting forwards do the rest. The game was eventually won 5-1 to 3-0, a seven point victory that was richly deserved.

The squad of 13 boys deserve great credit for coming through eight hard games over the course of a day and for running just as hard at the end of the final as they had in the first group game. Niall McFarland was impressive and confident in goals and his kick-outs set up attack after attack. The full back line was anchored by Joseph Blaney and he was well supported by Henry McGuigan and Niall Boyle on either side of him. In front of them Ronan Costello stopped attack after attack and won vital possession for the team.

At midfield Cormac O’Rawe and Aodhan O’Keefe worked tirelessly all day and delivered quality ball to the forwards in one game after another. Daire Curran was the link-man between the midfield and the inside forwards and those forwards – Conor O’Keefe, Conor Nolan, Tiernan Quinn, Matthew Lyttle and Fergal O’Kane – scored impressively with fantastic goals in every match.

Each one of them was a credit to themselves, their families and to the club on a magnificent day for Bredagh GAC.

U-8 Clonduff Tournament
Saturday 25th August 2007

The Bredagh U-8 footballers had a great day out and were within seconds of winning the shield competition in a very prestigious and competitive tournament. However, all the players went home happy and proud with runners-up medals in their back pockets.
The tournament was once again another great success with 24 teams from four counties participating in the very well organised event. The sun stayed out for the most part and the travelling Bredagh supporters took the opportunity, in between games, to top up their tans!

Bredagh were drawn in a very tough group of 6 teams, which included Clan Eireann (last years winners) and Mayobridge. The lads got off to a good start holding Mayobridge to a scoreless draw in the first game. However, up next was the strongly fancied Clan Eireann team (eventual cup winners on the day) and as expected they came out all guns blazing. It wasn't long before they took control giving Bredagh very few opportunites to get flowing and went on to win the game convincingly. However, the Bredagh lads regrouped following some inspirational words from coaches Mickey Curran and Damien O'Kane

They went on to win their next 3 group games as follows:

Bredagh 1-1 Burren 1-0
Sean Lyttle (1-0), Eamon Carville (0-1)

Bredagh 1-1 Roche Emmets(Co. Louth) 0-2
Conal O'Rawe (1-0), Fintan Meehan (0-1)

Bredagh 3-3 Attical 0-0
Sean Lyttle (2-2), Darragh Curran (0-1), Conal O'Rawe (0-1), Liam Francis (0-1)

The group stages now complete, Bredagh finished joint second with Mayobridge on points but were pushed into third place on score difference, which earned them a quarter-final slot in the shield competition against Moy. The Bredagh lads were, by now, playing with purpose and showing great determination in all areas of the pitch, with the resilient back line of Brendan Gallen and Liam Francis, the flair at midfield of Conal O'rawe and Sean Lyttle and the skillfull forward line of Darragh Curran and Aaron Rooney. They easily disposed of a dejected Moy team by a scoreline of 2-1 to 0-0, with two goals from Sean Lyttle and a point from Conal O'Rawe. Next up was the match of the day against Rostrevor.........

This match turned into a nail-biting encounter for the Bredagh fans, as Bredagh had most of the play but were unable to score. Luckily, Rostrevor couldn't find their scoring boots either and the match was scoreless at full-time. Extra time was played and this gave Bredagh a second chance, which they seized, scoring 3 points in quick succession, 2 from Conal O'Rawe and the point of the day from Aaron Rooney with a sideline kick.
Great excitement ensued as the lads prepared themselves for the final against Burren, who they defeated in the group stages.
The Bredagh lads dominated the final, but only managed to get 1 point from Aaron Rooney. However, this seemed to be enough as the match went into the final minute, then, totally against the run of play, a loose ball in the Bredagh goalmouth was palmed into the net by a Burren forward. The Bredagh players and spectators were stunned, as the referee blew the final whistle after the kick-out. Heart-breaking for the lads, but they got over it very quickly as they proudly accepted their runners-up medals

This was a fantastic performance by the entire Bredagh U-8 squad, showing great discipline, skill, determination and enthusiasm. Well done to all.

Bredagh v Carryduff
Sunday 10th June 2007
The Bredagh U-8's put on a fabulous display of football to win all three challenge games against Carryduff in sun-soaked Cherryvale Park.

Match 1 was a fascinating game with Bredagh and Carryduff locked in a very competetive encounter, with the Bredagh lads coming through victorious by 1 goal in the end. Bredagh backs Brendan Gallen and Liam Francis were very determined not to let the Carryduff forwards get any scoring chances and did a superb defensive job. The midfielders and forwards worked very hard and battled for every ball, showing their football skills while in possession Conall O'Rawe fired home 2 cracking goals which left the Carryduff goalkeeper with no chance of saving. Lorcan Fahy was outstanding at midfield, pushing forward at every opportunity and scored 1 goal and 1 point in total. Up front, Daniel Legget and Andy Harney were in fine form scoring 1 goal and 1 point respectively. All in all it was a first class performance by the Bredagh lads and there are plenty of names to watch out for in the future.

Match 2 was also a very competetive game with Bredagh winning 2-4 to 0-3. Bredagh forwards Cillian Durkan, Darragh Curran and Joseph Blaney were a class act up front, stringing together some great passes and threading their way through the Carryduff defense. Other notable performances by Ronan Costelloe and Aaron Rooney made sure the Bredagh boys stayed on top and come through winners in the end.

Match 3 was slightly easier for the Bredagh lads with the scoreline showing Bredagh to have won by quite a margin. The entire team worked hard and played some great football with notable performances from Michael Napier, Henry McGuigan and Rian Woods.
