Minor Hurling

Friendly: Bredagh 1-08 1-06 St Enda's

Minor Hurling Challenge Match

With a bye in the league this week Bredagh minors played St Enda’s, Glengormley, in a challenge match at a windswept Cherryvale on Monday night.
St Enda’s have been playing in the North Antrim league this season and presented a tough, physical challenge for a young Bredagh team who struggled to reach the high standards they set against Portaferry last week.

This was a game of two halves with St Endas dominating the first period and Bredagh having most of the play in the second period. The sides went into the half time break with 2 points separating them, 1-4 to 1-2 in favour of St Endas with Kieran Kelly scoring the goal for Bredagh.

In the second half using the wind advantage Bredagh turned the scoreline around to lead by 2 pts. In the closing stages St Enda’s fought hard for the goal that would give them victory but with Cormac Hughes superb in the centre of defence and a Matthew Mullan wonder point from all of 80 yards, Bredagh held on to the 2 pt margin until the final whistle.

Final score: Bredagh 1-08 1-06 St Enda’s

Summary
There will need to be a vast improvement if Bredagh are to compete with the Ards teams and Carryduff in the coming weeks. A number of players were below par on this occasion and a full attendance is required at training on Thursdays at 6.30pm and Saturdays at 3.00pm.

Bredagh Squad: Ciaran Fitzpatrick, Conal Mulholland, Michael Mullan, Eoghan Curran, Donal McKegney, Cormac Hughes, Daniel Higgins, Cormac White, Donal Hughes, Ciaran Kelly, Matthew McAfee, Michael Magee, Conal Doherty, Niall Donnelly, Christian Hunter, Matthew Mullan and Ryan Curran

MHL Div 1: Portaferry 0-16 1-07 Bredagh
Narrow defeat for Bredagh minor hurlers

Bredagh minor hurlers made their debut in the Minor League Division 1 when they travelled to Portaferry on Monday evening to take on the locals. Despite missing 4 regulars, the Bredagh lads where hopeful of causing an upset and returning to Belfast with the league points.

The game was played in good conditions at St Patrick’s Park with Bredagh captain Cormac White opting to play with the setting sun at their backs in the first half. Bredagh were slow to settle and a strong Portaferry outfit took advantage to race into a 4 point lead. Niall Donnelly opened the Bredagh account with a point from a free but Portaferry responded straight away with a point from play. Bredagh were very much on the back foot at this stage but keeper Devlin and the defense of Mulholland, Woods, Curran, Mullan, McKegney and Cormac Hughes kept the Portaferry forwards at bay and prevented them from scoring the goals that could have settled the game as a contest.

With 23 minutes gone and Bredagh trailing by 6 points to 1, Donnelly broke free of his marker to drive a Ciaran Kelly pass to the net. Approaching half time Portaferry extended their lead to 3 but good work from McAfee freed up Donnelly to knock over a fine point from 50m and reduce the lead to 2 points at the whistle.

Half time: Portaferry 0-07 1-02 Bredagh

With only 2 points between the teams it was all to play for in the second half and it was Bredagh who started the brighter with a Donnelly point from a 45m free. Portaferry replied with a point from a 65 but Bredagh were now playing some excellent hurling and 2 points from the stick of Donal Hughes pulled the South Belfast lads level. Portaferry were rattled and their management team made a number of positional changes to try and get a grip on the game. 3 points without reply put the Ports back in the driving seat but Bredagh weren’t finished yet and McAfee, Donnelly and Hunter all went close with goal chances. Points from Donnelly and Cormac Hughes finished the scoring for a Bredagh team that battled right to the final whistle.

Result: Portaferry 0-16 1-07 Bredagh

Summary
This was first class performance from a young minor team against the strongest team in the county. Playing with several regulars missing a number of u16s joined the squad and Devlin, Kelly, Robinson, Farmer, Curran and Mulholland all performed well under pressure. Minor county stars Niall Donnelly, Cormac Hughes and Donal Hughes were outstanding, ably supported by McAfee and White at mid field. Up front Hunter and Doherty performed well in the second half when they got more ball. McKegney suffered an unfortunate ankle injury early in the game and had to be replaced at half.

Training
Training continues on Thursdays at 6.30pm and on Saturdays at 3.00pm. With league games against Ballycran, Ballygalget and Carryduff coming up, a full attendance is required.

Team and scorers: C Devlin, E Curran, P Woods, C Mulholland, M Mullan, K Kelly, D McKegney, D Robinson , C Hughes (0-1), D Hughes (0-2), C White, N Donnelly (1-4), C Hunter, C Doherty, D Farmer, M McAfee.

MHL Play-off: Bredagh 2-14 0-10 Liatroim
Bredagh minor hurlers recorded an excellent victory on Bank Holiday Monday in this league play-off in front a large home support. Liatroim came into this game on the back of a comprehensive win over Carryduff and were very confident of qualifying from this non Ards League. Bredagh soon put paid to that notion. The game was played at a fast pace with several Bredagh players showing their markers a clean pair of heels in the warm conditions. Cormac Whyte and Cormac Hughes got a grip of midfield right from the first whistle and it was team captain Whyte who opened the scoring with a fine point from play. Liatroim played their way into the game but stout defence by Bredagh thwarted many of their attacks. Points followed from Niall Donnelly and Cormac Hughes to put a bit of distance between the two teams. The other forwards responded to their leadership and struck several more points in between two goals from Donnelly and Hunter which gave Bredagh a commanding lead leading up to the half time whistle. Some niggly fouls from the opposition upset the Bredagh play but the players got to half time with a lead of 2-9 to 3 pts.

Second half
In the second half the referee took a firmer grip of the game and as a consequence the play became a lot less fluid. Liatroim came back into the game with a string of frees awarded for careless defending but the same indiscipline from the opposition allowed Bredagh to keep ahead in the scoring stakes. The last ten minutes saw Liatroim go all out for goals to get them back into the match but the Bredagh defence stood firm as they repelled the Liatroim forwards time and time again. At the final whistle all of the players shook hands having enjoyed a great game of hurling.

Summary
This was an excellent team performance with every player playing his part. The full back line of Woods, Mulholland and Higgins were tested by the Liatroim forwards in the second half but were up to the task. The half back line of Mullan, McKegney and Guerin hurled well throughout the game, while goalkeepers Devlin (first half) and Kelly (second half) did all that was asked of them with a clean sheet. Team captain Cormac White led by example at mid field while Cormac Hughes put in an outstanding hours hurling, marking the opposition‘s best player out of the match, covering every inch of the pitch and lobbing over a free from 70 metres for good measure. Up front Donnelly was again the pick of the forwards well supported by McAfee, Donal Hughes, Doherty, Hunter, Matthew Mullan and Farmer.

Bredagh and neighbours Carryduff now join the three Ards teams in the Minor Hurling League First Division.

Panel and Scorers: K Devlin, C Mulholland, P Woods, D Higgins, D McKegney, Michael Mullan, M Guerin, C Whyte (0 -1), C Hughes 0 – 1), D Hughes, (0 – 3), M McAfee (0 – 1), M Magee, C Doherty (0 – 1), N Donnelly (1 - 7), C Hunter (1 – 0), K Kelly, E Curran, Matthew Mullan, D Farmer and C Fitzpatrick.

The team managers and players would like to thank all those who turned up on the night to support the team – it was greatly appreciated!

Minor hurlers make county squad

3 Bredagh hurlers have been selected for the county minor squad for the forthcoming Ulster Championship. Cormac Hughes, Donal Hughes and Niall Donnelly all performed well for the successful non Ards minor team during the Ulster league and have been invited on to the full county panel. Following a successful coaching session on 26th April with Kilkenny All Star Ritchie Power Snr the panel travel to Kilkenny on 2nd May for a Coaching Weekend and friendly against Kilkenny Minor B Team.

MHL: Kilclief 0-01 7-21 Bredagh

Bredagh minor hurlers breezed into the league play-offs on Monday evening with a comprehensive victory over Kilclief at the East Down venue. The game was played in excellent conditions for hurling and the Bredagh boys turned in a fine display of fast, skilful, hurling that, despite their best efforts, Kilclief couldn’t live with.

The Bredagh mid field pair of Cormac Hughes and Cormac White were on top throughout the game, while all of the forwards got on the score sheet with a fine display of intelligent teamwork. In defence, Mullan, Guerin, Woods, Higgins and Mulholland turned back every Kilclief attack leaving goalkeeper Kelly with very little to do all evening.

Ahead by 3-09 to no score at half time, Bredagh carried on where they had left off in the second half, completely dominating all areas of the pitch to run out comfortable winners at the final whistle. The game was played in a sporting manner throughout and Kilclief deserve credit for battling right to the end.

Bredagh panel and scorers: K Kelly, C Mulholland, P Woods, D Higgins, M Mullan, M Guerin, C Hughes (1-1), C White (1-2), C Hunter (1-2), D Hughes (2-0), N Donnelly (1-11), C Doherty (0-2), M McAfee (1-2), C Fitzpatrick, E Curran, M McGee, D McKegney (0-1).

With Section A of the league won, Bredagh now face the runners up in Section B in a play off to determine who plays in Division 1 with the Ards clubs during the summer. The game will be played in Cherryvale on Monday 5th May and will be followed by a 5 week exam break.

Training continues on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays

MHL: Bredagh 5-09 1-09 Warrenpoint

League win for Bredagh minor hurlers

Bredagh minor hurlers defeated South Down rivals Warrenpoint by 12 points in a league match on Easter Monday. The final score was Bredagh 5-09 Warrenpoint 1-09.

The game was played in very windy conditions at Cherryvale with Bredagh captain Cormac White opting to play against the wind in the first half. Despite playing into the strong wind it was the Bredagh lads that hit the ground running with 2 points from Niall Donnelly and Donal Hughes before county star Cunningham opened the scoring for Warrenpoint with a point from a free.

Bredagh hit back immediately and a clever pass from Cormac Hughes found McAfee unmarked on the edge of the square. The big full forward drove the ball to the net giving the Warrenpoint keeper no chance of stopping it. With Warrenpoint struggling to cope with the conditions Magee took advantage of some confusion in their defence to kick the ball to the net for Bredagh’s second goal. Donal Hughes added another point from play before the Point settled and replied with 3 unanswered points. McAfee recorded the last score of the first half with a goal on the stroke of half time.

Half time: Bredagh 3 –03 0-04 Warrenpoint

Warrenpoint are a team that never give up and straight from the restart they signalled their intention to get back into the game. 3 points from play narrowed the gap to 5 but some excellent defending from goalkeeper Doherty and fullbacks Michael Mullan, Kelly and Higgins kept the ball away from the Bredagh net.

Half way through the second half 2 long range points from Donal Hughes settled Bredagh before a speculative lob from Michael Magee dropped over the Warrenpoint keepers head into the back of the net. Warrenpoint hit back with a goal and a point but Bredagh were now in control with the Hughes brothers, White, McAfee, Matthew Mullan and Donnelly dominating the play. Donnelly scored a fine point from the left wing before McAfee moved out to half forward and knocked over 2 points. In the dieing minutes Donnelly scored an excellent gaol and Donal Hughes knocked over another of his trademark long- range points to give the home team a well deserved 12 point victory.

Result: Bredagh 5-09 1-09 Warrenpoint

Summary
This was first time Bredagh has beaten Warrenpoint at minor level and they were well worth the win. Playing with 5 regulars missing a number of u16s joined the squad and Kelly, McCaughey, Comican, Robinson, Farmer and Fitzpatrick all adapted well to the more physical play at minor levels.

Next match
Next match is on Monday 14th April away to Kilclief. Training continues at the PEC – Tuesday 7.30pm and Thursday 6.30pm.

Team and scorers: C Doherty, D Higgins, Michael Mullan, K Kelly, D Robinson , C Hughes, D Hughes (0-5), C White, N Donnelly (1-2), M Magee (2-0), Matthew Mullan, M McAfee (2-2), K Duffin, B McCaughey, D Farmer, J Comican, C Fitzpatrick.

Derby win for Bredagh minor hurlers

Bredagh minor hurlers defeated local rivals Carryduff by 10 points in a challenge match on Sunday morning on a score of 4-17 to 4-07.

The game was played in excellent conditions on a firm pitch and it was Carryduff who hit the ground running, hitting a goal and a point before Nial Donnelly and Michael Magee opened the Bredagh account with points from close range. Both teams were rusty after the long winter break but it was Carryduff who settled better and took advantage of poor team work in the Bredagh defence to slam home another goal.

A number of positional changes settled Bredagh and the forwards found their range with Duffin, Cormac Hughes (2), Donnelly (3), and White (2) all scoring points. During this spell of pressure 4 excellent goal chances were all saved brilliantly by young Carryduff ‘keeper McGlinchy to keep his team in contention.

A short period of Carryduff dominance just before the break produced two points for the home side to leave the minimum between the teams at half time.

Half time: Carryduff 2-03 0-10 Bredagh

A number of substitutions and positional changes at half time appeared to have worked for Bredagh as Donnelly opened the scoring with 2 points from play to stretch the lead for the visitors. However Carryduff were not for laying down and another defensive error allowed them in for a soft goal to level the scores.

With 10 minutes gone in the second Bredagh took control with a goal and a point from top scorer Donnelly and a goal from substitute Farmer. Carryduff battled to the end but a goal from mid fielder Donal Hughes and another from Donnelly put the game out of reach. Donal Hughes and Magee completed the scoring for the visitors with 2 points each from play.

Summary
This was a good workout for both teams as they prepare for the start of the league in March. The Bredagh lads know they will have to improve if they are to achieve their objective of winning the qualifying league to progress to Division 1.

Training continues at the PEC – Tuesday 7.30pm and Thursday 6.30pm. A full attendance is required.

Team and scorers: C Doherty, C Mulholland, P Woods, E Curran, D McKegney, M Guerin, D Higgins, C Hughes (0-2), D Hughes (1-2), C Hunter, C White (0-2), N Donnelly (2-7), M Magee (0-2), K Duffin (0-1), K Kelly, D Robinson, R Curran, D Farmer (1-0), J Comican.

Triple Champions!
Three competitions entered. Three competitions won. That’s the proud boast of the non-Ards Minor Hurling team.
Back in May/June they took part in the Ulster “B” league and went through their fixtures undefeated but one fixture was never played and that was away to Donegal.

Undaunted however they then travelled to Termonteckin Complex in County Louth to take part in the North East Blitz- the brain child of National Hurling Development Officer Paudie Butler and here they registered victories over Longford, Monaghan and Cavan to contest the final against the only other unbeaten side – Louth and once again Down ended up victorious.

The plan was to play off the North East winners against the North West but this proved problematical. Eventually however Croke Park selected Ballyhaise in County Cavan to host the final for the All Ireland “C” Cup with Down facing Sligo. Again the men in red and black emerged victorious. Two trophies won, Sciath Iomána and the All Ireland “C” Cup – but there was still unfinished business with Donegal! Well that was concluded last Saturday when Down travelled to Letterkenny to take on Donegal. In the resplendent surroundings of St. Eunans, Letterkenny a considerably depleted Down squad took to the field with the same focus and enthusiasm that had reaped earlier rewards and once again the fire and hunger of the young men in red and black prevailed. Within 4 minutes of the start Paul McAleenan had pointed before Micheál Cunningham found the net and Down were on their way. With 20 minutes gone Matthew Teague soloed through only to see his shot cannon off the upright and Shane Courtney followed up to first time just past the post. Despite this let off Donegal mounted stern opposition and the game was decidedly still in the balance as the half time whistle sounded and the scoreboard read Down 1-03 Donegal 0 -03!

Karl Maxwell pointed brilliantly on the resumption and a few minutes later cam the score that essentially secured victory for Down. Donegal were pressing and sent a through ball into their forward line it was brilliantly won by star performer Alan Higgins whose lengthy clearance reached Meatsey at the opposite end of the field and he rounded his man and hammered it to the roof of the net. Paul McAleenan continued to find his range while back from injury Conal Beatty sent over two excellent points. In the final 3 minutes Paul Sheehan helped himself to an excellent point before notching the game’s final goal. The gallant team who all played a heroes part was as follows; Michael Fegan, Danny Nugent, Alan Higgins, Aaron OHare, Chris Teague, Gary Courtney, Brian Grant, Paul McAleenan, Karl Maxwell, Matthew Teague, Shane Courtney, Micheál Cunningham, Paul Sheehan, Danny Grant, Declan Doherty, Blain Murphy, Conor Beatty.

And thus the season ends with three competitions won and further underlines the progress in hurling outside the traditional hurling area. So it is congratulations to all the players and a special word of thanks to the management team of Brian Murphy, Ronan Sheehan and the ever reliable Willie Mageean.

Bredagh hurlers in All Ireland win
No fewer than 5 Bredagh boys were part of the Down Minor B squad that lifted the All Ireland C title on Saturday at Ballyconnell when they defeated Sligo on a scoreline of 4-13 to 2-6. Cormac Hughes played on the winning team at right half forward and had an excellent game topping off a strong performance with a well taken goal midway through the second half. Matthew McAfee, Mark Devlin and Michael Mullan were subs while Cormac White was unavailable due to injury but travelled with the squad. Unfortunately Rowan Smart who had starred in the earlier rounds was unavailable as he was abroad on holiday. The match itself was tougher than the scoreline suggests as Sligo put up stern resistance in a game of high quality hurling. Down had built up a lead of some 9 points at half time but Sligo were on fire in the early stages of the second period and threatened to overrun Down when they hammered in 2 goals to leave just 3 between them. Sligo came again and broke through but when another goal looked on they hit the side netting. This proved to be a wake up call for Down and and with points from play from Michael Cunningham 2 (Warrenpoint) and Paul McAleenan (Liatriom) and that Cormac Hughes goal they regained a healthy lead and finished strongly to lift the trophy for the first time. Well done to the boys!

East Down MHL: Kilclief 1-10 3-06 Bredagh
Bredagh minors produced another good performance away to Kilclief on Monday 3rd September in their last East Down League game of the season, eventually winning by 2 points.

Bredagh played with a strong breeze in the first half but the forwards had difficultly finding the target with the Sun setting behind the Kilclief goal and some of the younger lads struggled to cope with the physical side of the Kilclief game.
After 8 minutes Donal Hughes eventually opened the scoring for the South Belfast boys with a well taken point from play but Kilclief responded immediately with a good point of their own. 2 pointed frees from Cormac Hughes put Bredagh back in the lead and they looked to be taking control of the game when a long, high, ball from centre back, Mullan, dropped into the Kilclief net. The Lecale men fought back with 2 points from play and with 3 minutes left of the first half a Cormac Hughes shot was fumbled into the net by the Kilclief ’keeper. Bredagh were ahead at the break but the lads knew that they had a lot to do in the second half, playing against a strong breeze.
Half time score: Kilclief 0-03 2-03 Bredagh

Second half
The second half started with a Kilclief point straight from the throw-in and for 10 minutes Kilclief were completely dominant. A total of 5 points were scored without reply but the Bredagh defence battled hard and crucially, no goals were conceded.
A rough tackle on Bredagh mid-fielder McAfee gave Cormac Hughes the opportunity to settle the nerves and he duly obliged with a pointed free from 80 yards. Donal Hughes followed up with a point from play but Kilclief came back with 2 points of their own. The game moved into the closing stages with Bredagh 2 points in front when Devlin won the ball in his own half and passed to McAfee. McAfee broke the Kilclief challenge and found Kelly on the edge of the square with a perfectly weighted pass. Kelly made no mistake from 6 yards out to put Bredagh 5 ahead.
Again the Kilclief boys refused to accept defeat and with a minute remaining mid-fielder Conway broke through the Bredagh defence to find the net.
Ciaran Kelly completed the scoring with a fine point in injury to leave the final score Kilclief 1-10 3-06 Bredagh.

Summary
This was another good all round team performance but a few individuals really stood out. Donal and Cormac Hughes dominated the mid field area throughout most of the game, against strong opponents and when Kilclief got on top in the second half it was Woods, Mullan and Devlin in defence who stood up to be counted. Ciaran Kelly was the pick of the forwards scoring 1-01 on the night while young Ciaran Fitzpatrick was unlucky to have a perfectly good goal given wide when the ball passed through the net close to the post.

Team and Scorers: C Doherty, D Higgins, P Woods, D McKegney, M Devlin, M Guerin, M Mullan (1-0), M McAfee, D Hughes (0-2), C Hunter, C Hughes (1-3), M Magee, C Mulholland, D Farmer, C Kelly (1-1), C Fitzpatrick.

With the league now over the coaches, Liam Quinn and Dessy Gallagher, want to thank the lads for their hard work and commitment throughout the year. 10 games were played, with Bredagh wining 5 and losing 5. The discipline of the squad was excellent with only one booking and no sendings off throughout the season. 20 of the 24 man squad are available to play at Minor level next year and all of them have benefited from playing at a higher standard this year.

East Down MHL: Bredagh 5-17 3-01 Castlewellan
Bredagh minors produced their best performance of the season to inflict a heavy defeat on a battling Castlewellan at Cherryvale on Monday evening. The South Belfast lads followed the instructions of their coaches to the letter and played at a high tempo from the moment the ball was thrown in. Their superior skill, determination and teamwork soon reaped dividends with a goal and a point from full forward Doherty followed by a point from McAfee and 2 from Cormac Hughes. Bredagh continued to dominate with Doherty grabbing another point and young Damhan Farmer scoring a goal. With 20 minutes gone the Hughes brothers took control of the mid field area and Donal rattled over 3 points and Comac 2, all from play. With 5 minutes left in the first half Castlewellan were awarded a penalty when their full forward was pushed to the ground inside the penalty area. A goal resulted and Matthew Mullan replied with a point to leave the half time score Bredagh 2-11 Castlewellan 1-00.

Second half
The second half was more of a contest as the Castlewellan lads came out to show what they could do and they soon found their range with a fine point from play. A goal was added moments later but the Bredagh defence settled and with big performances from Kelly, Woods, Mullan, Devlin and Smart, Bredagh got back into their stride. Points from Donal and Cormac Hughes were followed by a 3 minutes spell when Christian Hunter scored a goal and 2 points. Castlewellan added another goal and McAfee responded with a goal for Bredagh. Donal Hughes then moved to full forward and scored the goal of the game when he pulled first time on a high dropping ball that flew to the net. Donal completed the scoring with an excellent point in injury to leave the final score Bredagh 5-17 3-01 Castlewellan.

Summary
This was an excellent all round team performance and shows what this team is capable of. The defence were very tight throughout the match and all of the forwards and mid fielders scored from play.

Next up is a trip to Kilclief on 3rd September. Training continues at Cherryvale on Saturdays at 1.30pm.

Team and Scorers: C Kelly, D Higgins, P Woods, M Devlin, R Smart, C Mulholland, M Mullan, M McAfee (1-01), C Hughes (0-06), C Hunter (1-02), D Hughes (1-05), M Mullan (0-01), Damhan Farmer (1-00), Conal Doherty (1-02)

East Down Minor Hurling League: Bredagh 2 - 08 V Carryduff 1 - 04
Despite being short several regulars Bredagh were determined not to allow near neighbours Carryduff cause any shocks in this second league match.

First Half
As with most derby matches the opening 10 minutes were a tight and tense affair. Bredagh started slowly and found it difficult to find their range. After Carryduff opened the scoring Bredagh half backs and midfielders took a tight grip on the game but still couldn't get their opening score. The team had 75% of the possession but the lighter forwards were finding it difficult against a strong 'Duff backline. The ball was mainly in the Carryduff half but, despite all the pressure, the opening score just would not come. A soft free gave Bredagh the kick start they needed and midway through the half Cormac Hughes set off on a mazy solo run from midfield and passed all before him before shooting to the net. From there to half time Bredagh knocked over another couple of points to lead at half time by 1- 03 to 0 -02 including one fine effort from Conal Doherty - goalkeeper turned forward.

Second Half
Changes saw Michael Mullan move into the forward line to add a bit of muscle to that area. Following constant pressure from midfield a long ball into the square was pulled on overhead by him to start the second half scores. He was also involved in a goalmouth scramble from which Donal Hughes prodded to the net. Bredagh proceeded to score some fine points and were leading comfortably towards the end. Taking their foot of the pedal they allowed the opposition in for a goal and a couple of points near the end. It was too little too late for Carryduff as Rowan Smart rounded off the scoring for a fine point from 30 metres.

Summary
This was a good team performance with all players committed from the first whistle. Again, because of holidays and injuries, we had to delve into the under 16 squad and those young men did not let the team, or themselves, down.

Team and Scorers: Ciaran Kelly, Danny Higgins, Michael Mullan (0 - 02), Mark Devlin, Pearce Leitch, Rowan Smart (0 - 01), Matthew Mullan, Cormac Hughes (1 - 03), Donal Hughes (1- 01), Damhan Farmer, Christian Hunter, Conal Doherty (0 - 01), Ryan Curran and Donal Feeney.

Next match Monday 20 August v Castlewellan in Cherryvale - time to be announced

Historic Win For Down Minor Hurlers
Down’s non-Ards minor hurlers pulled off a marvellous victory in Drogheda on Saturday last beating Longford, Monaghan, Cavan and Louth to be the first name on the Blitz Iomana shield – the brainchild of national hurling development Officer Paudie Butler, and now go forward as North East Champions to take on the North West Winners – Sligo in an All-Ireland Final.

Despite travelling with only sixteen fit players due to- holidays, gaeltacht, injuries etc Down’s magnificent 16 did themselves their parents, their clubs and their county proud with 2 hours of gruelling hurling. The games were 15 minutes each way on full sized pitches in the wonderful St Fechins complex.

First up came Longford and it proved to be quite a difficult test with Down edging home by 1-6 to Longfords 5pts Cormac Hughes 1-0 Micheál Cunningham and Danny Grant 0-2 Paul O’Neill and Paul Mc Aleenan 1pt each. With little more than a 5 minute break Down had then to take the field against a big strong Monaghan outfit. However, Down stepped up their performance from the first game. The defence of Danny Nugent, Conan O’Neill, Aaron O’Hare Michael Mullan, Gary Courtney and Rowan Smart were compact while up front the all-important goal again came courtesy of Cormac Hughes while also on the points trail were Micheál Cunningham 0-3 Paul O’Neill 0-3 Danny Grant Paul McAleenan Cormac Hughes and Karl Maxwell 0-1 a piece as Down ran out winners 1-10 to Monaghan’s 2-4.

Down then had a well deserved rest before demolishing Cavan on a scoreline 4-12 to 0-0 with Micheál Cunningham top scorer with 2-4 and Danny Grant 2-1. Thus the stage was set for the finale between the only two unbeaten teams Down and recent Leinster Shield winners Louth. Louth were coming off their rest period while Down had got in some vital shooting practice against Cavan and what a cracker of a game it turned out to be.

The scoreline may suggest a runaway victory but that would be very wide of the mark. It was tough, uncompromising and very skillfull with the prize an All-Ireland Final meeting with Sligo. IF the defence and the forwards had won the plaudits in other games then enter a new hero.- goalie Colm Mc Cabe – He was simply superb. He pulled off 2 breathtaking stops that Noel Keith at his best would have been proud of while his puckouts were measured to perfection.

In midfield Paul O’Neill and Karl Maxwell proved the ideal pairing with O’Neill’s point taking exemplary while Maxwell’s workrate, vision, passing and a superb point proved too much for plucky Louth. In the end Down ran out clear and deserved winners 2-12 to 0-5.

Down scorers Micheál Cunningham and Paul O’Neill 0-4 a piece Paul McAleenan and Michael Fegan 1 goal Danny Grant 0-3 Karl Maxwell 0-1. The Down team was as follows: Colm Mc Cabe N.Shamrocks, Danny Nugent Wpoint, Conan O’Neill Wpoint, Aaron O’Hare Wpoint, Michael Mullan Bredagh, Gary Courtney N.Shamrocks, Rowan Smart Bredagh, Paul O’Neill Ballyvarley, Karl Maxwell Wpoint, Micheál Cunningham Wpoint, Paul Mc Aleenan Liatroim, Cormac Hughes Bredagh, Mark Devlin Bredagh, Danny Grant and Michael Fegan Wpoint, substitute Blain Murphy Wpoint and Declan Doherty Carryduff who despite being unable to field through injury showed commendable loyalty by travelling with the team. The team was managed by Ronan Sheehan and Brian Murphy and the ever efficient liaison officer Willie Mageean- heroes all!

At the conclusion of the blitz ‘The Blitz Iomána Shield’ was presented to captain Paul McAleenan and a beautiful set of medals and so Down becomes the first name on the new shield but more importantly Down go forward to meet Sligo in the final on a date still to be decided and this team still have to play the final of the Ulster ‘B’ League against Donegal and on the evidence of last Saturday there may be more honours to follow.

East Down Minor League: Bredagh 3-07 4-12 Liatroim
Bredagh minors took on Liatroim in the first round of the East Down League in Cherryvale on Monday 6th August. With 6 regulars missing the younger u16s stepped up to fill the gaps yet again with all of them performing well against a much older and bigger Liatroim team.

Liatroim started the stronger and opened the scoring with a goal after 3 minutes and followed up with 2 unanswered points from play. Liatroim dominated the early stages but poor shooting allowed Bredagh back into the game and points from Cormac White, Donal Hughes and a Cormac Hughes free pulled the Ormeau Road boys back to within a point. Liatroim pulled ahead again with 2 points from McAleenan frees before Donal Hughes broke free and drove the ball to the Liatroim net. 2 minutes later McAfee’s shot from 50m dropped over the ‘keeper’s head into the Liatroim net to put Bredagh ahead for the first time. Mulholland and McAfee exchanged points with Liatroim to leave Bredagh 2 points ahead at the half time break, 2-05 to 1-06.

Second half
Despite the best efforts of the young Bredagh lads Liatroim dominated the second half with the wind to their backs. The Hughes brothers, Smart, Mullan, McAfee and Devlin battled hard but couldn’t hold back the Liatroim forwards who chalked up 3 goals and 6 points. Cormac Hughes responded for Bredagh with a goal and 2 points but despite a period of sustained pressure towards the end of the match they were unable to add to their total and the game finish with a score line of 3-07 to 4-12.

Summary
Bredagh can take a lot of positives from this match before the local derby match with Carryduff on Monday 13th August. The full minors matched Liatroim throughout the match around the middle of the field. The 3 u16s making their first start at minor level, Fitzpatrick, Cormican and Leitch emerged with a lot of credit while young Ciaran Kelly was outstanding in goals.

Team and scorers: Ciaran Kelly, Christian Hunter, Michael Mullan, Rowan Smart, Mark Devlin, Cormac Hughes (1-3), Ciaran Fitzpatrick, Matthew McAfee (1-1), Donal Hughes (1-1), Conal Mulholland (0-1), Cormac White (0-1), Damhan Farmer, Pearce Leitch, James Cormican, Matthew Mullan.

Next match is away to Carryduff on Monday 13th August. Meet at Cherryvale at 6.30pm. Please advise Liam if you are unable to attend.

MHC Semi Final: Bredagh 1-09 1-14 Clonduff
Bredagh minor hurlers lost out to a strong Clonduff outfit at a wet Boucher Road on Monday 2 July. Forced to field without 5 regular starters due to holidays and an Ulster Development Programme, Bredagh sent out a young team that included two lads making their début at minor level (Ciaran Fitzpatrick and Ryan Curran).
Bredagh started well and opened the scoring with a well-taken goal from Feeney following good work from McAfee and Guerin. Clonduff responded with 2 points from play but Cormac Hughes slotted over 2 frees to keep Bredagh 3 ahead half way through the first half. As the game went on Clonduff began to dominate and hit 3 wides and 2 points before Rowan Smart scored a fine point from play, straight from a long Doherty puck out. 2 more Clonduff points followed with Ciaran Kelly replying for Bredagh to leave the home side 1 point up at half time.

Second half
In the second half Clonduff dominated but the younger Bredagh lads were in no way intimidated by their robust approach to the game. 5 points without reply put Clonduff in the driving seat and it was only great goal keeping from Doherty and hard work from the full back line of Higgins, McKegney and Mulholland that prevented Clonduff scoring goals.
Cormac Hughes (2) and Michael Mullan added points for the home team and pulled the lead back to a single point but a Clonduff goal with 10 minutes remaining proved to be the critical score. Cormac Hughes traded points with Conduff to bring his personal total to 6 and with minutes left and 5 points in it Bredagh threw everything at the Hilltown boys in an attempt to score a decisive goal. Farmer, McElroy, and Mullan all had efforts saved or blocked but there was no way back for the brave Bredagh boys and it is Clonduff who will play Warrenpoint or St Patrick's in the County Final.

Best for Bredagh were Smart, Doherty and Hughes with young Ciaran Fitzpatrick impressing on his début.

Team and Scorers: Conal Doherty, Danny Higgins, Donal McKegney, Conal Mulholland, Ciaran Fitzpatrick, Michael Mullan (0-1), Michael Guerin, Rowan Smart(0-1), Matthew McAfee, Michael Magee, Cormac Hughes (0-6), Ciaran Kelly (0-1), Damhan Farmer, Mark McElroy, Donal Feeney (1-0) and Ryan Curran.

Minor Hurling Championship Semi Final
The Minor Hurling Championship Semi Final v Clonduff goes ahead on Monday evening 2nd July at the Boucher Rd pitch (Cherryvale not available). Meet at Cherryvale @ 6.30pm to travel over. Help with transport will be required.

We need a full turn out at training on Saturday (1.30pm Cherryvale). We were very rusty against Castlewellan and will need to improve if we are to reach the county final for the first time at minor level.
Anyone that cannot attend please let Liam know as soon as possible.

MHC Q/F: Bredagh 4-10 3-00 Castlewellan
Bredagh made hard work of beating a poor Castlewellan at windy Cherryvale on Monday evening. Playing into the strong breeze Bredagh raced into a 3 point lead with points from play from team captain Rowan Smart, Michael Magee and Cormac White. The young Bredagh side were playing some lovely hurling during the opening exchanges but hit 5 wides and failed to add to their 3 point total. Castlewellan threaten the Bredagh goal on a number of occasions and were only kept at bay through hard work from the full back line of Higgins, Woods and McKegney and some excellent goalkeeping by Doherty in the Bredagh goals.
Half way through the first half Castlewellan got the break-through they had been threatening when their full forward drove the ball to the net to equalise. Bredagh responded with points from Donal Hughes and Michael Guerin before Mark McElroy kicked the ball to the Castlewellan net to leave Bredagh ahead 1-05 to 1 goal at the interval.

Second half
Playing with the wind Bredagh started the second half with well taken points from Michael Guerin, Rowan Smart and Michael Magee before Donal Hughes added a goal to put Bredagh 11 points up. The Bredagh half back line and mid field of Devlin, Mullan, McAfee, Cormac Hughes and Smart were now dominant but Castlewellan still managed to fight back to score 2 quick goals half way though the second half. An opportunist goal from substitute Damhan Farmer 10 minutes from time and points from Donal Hughes and Donal Feeney finally put some day light between the teams. Donal Hughes finished the scoring with an excellent goal minutes form the end.

Summary
This was a poor performance by the Bredagh lads despite the score line. Most of the lads were rusty after their month long break for exams and they all know that a much better performance will be required to win the semi final. A full turn out is required for training on Saturday at 1.30pm.

Team and scores: Conal Doherty, Danny Higgins, Paddy Woods, Donal McKegney, Mark Devlin, Michael Mullan, Rowan Smart (0-2), Cormac Hughes, Matthew McAfee, Michael Magee (0-2), Donal Hughes (2-2), Michael Guerin (0-2), Cormac White (0-1), Mark McElroy (1-0), Donal Feeney (0-1), Conal Mulholland, Ciaran Kelly, Damhan Farmer (1-0).

MHL Section A: Bredagh 2-08 3-09 St Patrick’s
Bredagh minors lost by 4 points on Monday evening to a strong St Patrick's side made up of the pick of Ballela, Ballyvarley and Newry Shamrocks. The game was played in windy conditions and the Bredagh boys turned around 7 points down at half time.
Playing with the breeze in the second half they out scored their older, more experienced, opponents but despite sustained pressure they didn’t manage to get the scores required to win the game.

This was a game that Bredagh really should have won but the lessons learned will be put to good use in the B Championship which starts towards the end of June.

The minors now take a break for exams but training continues with the senior squad on Sundays at noon.

Team and scorers: Conal Doherty, Danny Higgins, Paddy Woods, Donal McKegney, Mark Devlin, Michael Mullan, Rowan Smart, Matthew McAfee (1-1), Donal Hughes (0-2), Christian Hunter, Cormac Hughes (0-4), Michael Magee, Conal Mulholland, Cormac White (0-1), Kieran Kelly, Donal Feeny (1-0), Mark McElroy, Damhan Farmer.

MHL: Bredagh 4-12 4-06 Liatroim
Bredagh Minors produced their best performance of the season on Monday evening to defeat a very strong Liatroim side. The game was played in excellent conditions at Cherryvale and it was the Bredagh boys who started the better with 2 quick points from full forward Cormac Hughes followed by a goal from the same player.
Liatroim soon settled and score 2-3 without reply as the home defence struggled to contain their county players. With encouragement from the home support Bredagh raised their game and with McAfee, Devlin, Mullan, Smart and Donal Hughes dominating the mid field area they took control of the game. A point from Cormac White was followed by 4 from Cormac Hughes (3 frees) and just before half-time a Cormac Hughes goal put Bredagh well in front.

Half time: Bredagh 2-06 2-03 Liatroim
Liatroim came out fired up for the second half with star county minor Paul McAleenan moved out from goals to midfield. His impact was immediate and Liatroim grabbed 2 points from frees followed by a goal to lead by 2. Sustained Liatroim pressure followed but with Doherty in the Bredagh goals stopping everything that came his way and McKegney and Woods outstanding at full back the defence held firm. A long clearance from Higgins found Hunter at half forward who quickly released the ball to Cormac White. White grabbed the opportunity and burst through the Liatroim defence to rattle the Liatroim net. The goal settled the Bredagh nerves and they added 3 points from play without reply (Cormac Hughes, Magee and Donal Hughes). A Liatroim point was followed by a great individual goal from Cormac Hughes who went on to knock over 3 frees in the last 10 minutes and record an impressive 3-09 for the match. A late Liatroim goal led to some nervous moments in defence but the Bredagh lads held on to record their first win.

Team and scorers: Conal Doherty, Donal McKegney, Paddy Woods, Danny Higgins, Michael Mullan, Mark Devlin, Donal Hughes (0-1), Rowan Smart, Michael Magee (0-1), Matthew McAfee, Christian Hunter, Cormac White (1-1), Cormac Hughes (3-9), Ciaran Kelly, Damhan Farmer, Conal Mulholland.

Minor Training
There is training for Minors along with the seniors on Thursday at 6.30pm and Sunday at noon. Next match is at home to St Patrick's on Monday. Meet at Cherryvale at 6.30pm.

MHL : Bredagh 1-05 5-20 Ballycran
This was another battling display by the young Bredagh minor team against the reigning Ulster Minor Champions. Ballycran came to Cherryvale with virtually the same team that had beaten Cushendall in the Ulster final in December last year but Bredagh started well and an early goal for Ballycran was soon cancelled out when Cormac White drove the ball to the net for the home team. It took Ballycran a while to settle as the Bredagh boys fought for every ball and refused to be overawed by the bigger lads from the Ards. An injury to midfielder Donal Hughes, towards the end of the first half, forced the management team to make changes and young Conal Mulholland made his debut at minor level. At half time Ballycran led 3-06 to 1-03 with the Bredagh points all scored by Cormac Hughes.
Despite the best efforts of the Bredagh lads Ballycran grew stronger as the second half went on. With the ability to take scores from all over the pitch the Ards boys ran out 5-20 to 1-05 winners at the final whistle.
This was a good performance against the best minor team in Ulster. There are real signs of improvement within the team with everyone of the 17 man squad gaving 100% throughout the match.Next match for the minor hurlers is against Liatroim (away), next Monday 30th April. Leaving Cherryvale at 5.30.
Bredagh team and scorers: Conal Doherty, Danny Higgins, Paddy Woods, Donal McKegney, Mark Devlin, Michael Mullan, Rowan Smart, Donal Hughes, Cormac Hughes (0-5), Christian Hunter, Matthew McAfee, Michael Magee, Cormac White (1-0), Donal Feeny, Damhan Farmer, Ciaran Kelly and Conal Mulholland

Minor hurling league Section A
Portaferry 3-13 0-03 Bredagh

Bredagh minor hurlers travelled to Portaferry for their first league match of the new season and gave the locals a real run for their money, especially in the first half. The match was played on Portaferry’s new pitch in ideal conditions for hurling and the Bredagh lads rose to the occasion in the early exchanges. 2 points for Portaferry were quickly followed by 2 for Bredagh. The first came from a Cormac Hughes free after good work by Michael Magee and Matthew McAfee and the second from play when Christian Hunter knocked the ball over on his weaker side from 45m out.Portaferry knocked over another 2 points mid way through the first half but the Bredagh mid field pair of Donal and Cormac Hughes were now dominant and Cormac punished Portaferry with a well taken free from 80 yards following a foul on Donal. With only a point in the game Portaferry threw everything at the young Bredagh lads but the half back line of Mullan, Devlin and team captain Smart held firm. With a minute to go to the break the Portaferry full forward broke through the Bredagh defence and drove to the net to leave the score 1-04 to 0-03 at half time.

In the second half Portaferry came out all guns blazing and for 15 minutes bombarded the Bredagh goal mouth. Keeper Doherty pulled off a string of fine saves and the full back line of Higgins, Woods and McKegney blocked, hooked and tackled continually while under serious pressure from the Portaferry forwards - 4 of whom are on the county panel.Despite their best efforts’ Portaferry still managed 2 goals and 6 points but the never say die attitude of Paddy Woods led one of the Portaferry mentors to compare him to Diamuid “The Rock” O’Sullivan!.In the last 10 minutes Bredagh came back into the game and McElroy (playing his first ever game of hurling!) and McAfee had good goal chances saved by the excellent Portaferry goal keeper. Despite a spell of sustained pressure Bredagh failed to land another score and the game ended - Portaferry 3-11 0-03 Bredagh.

This was another case of the score line not reflecting the match however if this team stick together and maintain the good attendance at training it won’t be long before they get their first win in the Ards.It was particularly pleasing to note the fine performances from the younger members of the team (Magee, Kelly and Farmer) who were playing at minor level for the first time. If they continue to display the commitment they showed in this match they have a good future ahead of them in the game.

Team and scores: Conal Doherty, Danny Higgins, Paddy Woods, Donal McKegney, Mark Devlin, Rowan Smart, Michael Mullan, Cormac Hughes (0-02), Donal Hughes, Matthew McAfee, Michael Magee, Christian Hunter (0-01), Mark McElroy, Ciaran Kelly, Damhan Farmer.

Training continues on Saturday at 1.30. Next match is a home to Ballycran on Monday 23 April. Meet at Cherryvale at 6.15.

So Close
Four Bredagh minor hurlers recently came agonisingly close to an All Ireland Final. Paul Doole, Eoghan Donnelly, Rowan Smart and Paddy Byrne were in the Down squad that crushed Monaghan by 5-29 to 2-3. They then lost to Tyrone on Wednesday, August 17th, and were pipped at the post when a last-minute goal helped Tyrone beat Armagh for a place in the Final.

All Ireland Final?
"If someone had told me when I was at Queens ten years ago that four players from Bredagh would be one step away from an All Ireland hurling final in 2006, I'd have told them to go and get their heads looked at!"

Down Minor hurling manager Ronán Sheehan
has been as surprised as anyone else by the remarkable success story of the hurling revolution in South Belfast. His squad contains four Bredagh lads who came so close to playing in the All Ireland Special Minor Hurling Final against Mayo.
The Fab Four - Paul Doole, Rowan Smart, Paddy Byrne and Eoghan Donnelly - have impressed Ronán with their efforts so far. "It would have been a magnificent achievement if the four Bredagh boys had returned to the Ormeau Road with an All Ireland medal in their pockets. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that these lads have the talent to go all the way and play with the Down Senior team".

To put their achievement into context, there wasn't even a Bredagh minor hurling team until this year, when the brave decision was taken to mix it with the Ards teams. As expected, heavy defeats followed but the small squad has shown impressive spirit and have fully justified the decision. They recently showed terrific desire and spirit in a rip-roaring League game with Warrenpoint.

A case in point is one of the Bredagh four, Paddy Byrne. Up until three months ago Paddy hadn't played competitive hurling in two years, but he got the hunger back for the camán game when he starred in his first Minor League match against Liatroim and was promptly promoted to the Down Academy squad.

"I really can't believe how things have worked out. When I started back with the club in May, representing Down was the last thing on my mind, but I just couldn't get enough of the game and things really couldn't have worked out better. It's an added bonus that Paul, Rowan and Eoghan are involved in the squad too".

In an otherwise disappointing year for Down hurling, Ronán Sheehan, himself from the Newry Shamrocks club, describes this squad of players as "a breath of fresh air. They are made up only from players outside the Ards peninsula and their achievement highlights the great efforts being made by clubs such as Bredagh and Shamrocks".

The four Bredagh lads are also part of the Bredagh Senior squad which has reach the Ulster League Final at Casement Park next month. Remarkable times indeed for hurling in South Belfast.

Bredagh 1-4 Warrenpoint 2-6
League, Monday August 7th - Bredagh put up a great fight in a closely fought match with no quarter asked or given in a match played with great intensity by both teams. Warrenpoint’s greater guile and experience (they have played a significant number of games more than Bredagh, courtesy of playing in the Armagh League, as well as the Down League) ensured that they had just enough in the tank to hold off a determined Bredagh team seeking their first points of the season.

First-half - this was evenly balanced with Warrenpoint just one point ahead at the interval. However, with a bit of luck and a little more accuracy on the part of the Bredagh forwards and free-takers, the home team would have carried a 2/3 lead into the second half. A key feature of the first half was Matthew McAfee’s strong running in the half forward line, which was causing havoc in the Warrenpoint defence. Matthew Quinn was also in the thick of things in the forwards, after being introduced as an early substitute. In defence, Aidan O’Neill was putting in a tremendous effort to stem the Warrenpoint attack and cleared a number of balls with his no-nonsense first-time hurling. Paddy Byrne and Cormac Hughes were also holding their own at centrefield, with Cormac putting on a Man of the Match performance throughout the evening.

Second-half - this was more of the same with both teams striving to get the upper hand. The turning point came mid-way through when a long-range stroke from the Warrenpoint defence took a lucky and extreme bounce over goalkeeper Donal Hughes and ended up in the net to give Warrenpoint an eight point lead. Paul Doole responded with two points, to add to his one in the first half and Bredagh tried manfully for the next ten minutes to get a major score to get closer to their visitors. During this period Cormac White was also making his presence felt with several determined runs into the Warrenpoint defence. Eoghan Donnelly raised hopes of a final flurry with a goal from a 20-metre free in the dying minutes. Unfortunately, it was too little too late and Warrenpoint held on for a rather flattering five-point victory.

Summary - this was an excellent effort against a very good team. Michael Murphy, Matthew Quinn and Niall Colton brought added height and experience to the team and there is renewed hope for the Minor Championship in the next few weeks. Also, when the injured Owen Costello and other notable absentees such as Paddy Woods, Donal McKegney and Michael Guerin return to the team, Bredagh’s chances of a run in the Championship will improve considerably.

Training - continues with the senior hurlers on Thursdays at 7.00pm. It is absolutely vital that as many minors as possible attend these sessions as the more practice the team puts in over the next few weeks, the better the chances are of success in the Championship.

Panel & Scorers: Donal Hughes, Rowan Smart, Mark Devlin, Eoghan Donnelly 1-1, Michael Mullan, Aidan O’Neill, Cormac Hughes, Paddy Byrne, Paul Doole 0-3, Matthew McAfee, Niall Colton, Cormac White, Michael Murphy, Matthew Quinn.

Ballela/B'varley 3-13 Bredagh 2-10
League, Monday June 25 - a number of late withdrawals meant that Bredagh travelled with a depleted squad yet again, but having said that, the lads who travelled deserve immense credit for their commitment, especially when other current TV attractions make it difficult for young lads to freely give up their time. This was truly a game of two halves and Bredagh trailed Ballela/Ballyvarley by 11 points at half time, largely due to the concession of three sloppy goals in the first 20 minutes. However, no fault whatsoever should be placed at the feet of goalkeeper Paddy Woods who had an exceptional game throughout, stopping a series of point blank shots in both periods.
Second-half: the Bredagh lads were inspired and put in a much improved performance, including two goals from Paul Doole and Eoghan Donnelly, and a magnificent point from Donal Hughes wide on the right, to reduce the deficit to four points with five minutes remaining. Unfortunately the more experienced Ballela/Ballyvarley lads strung on two late points to run out winners by six.
Best for Bredagh: Paddy Woods in goals, the outstanding Rowan Smart at full-back and young Michael Guerin, who was superb in the half-backs and had arguably his best game ever in a Bredagh shirt, while Byrne, Mullan, O'Neill, Colton, McAfee and White all put in good second half performances. Paul Doole (1-3) and Eoghan Donnelly (1-5) were Bredagh's main scorers and proved they were more than a match for their direct opponents, who were both on this year's Down Minor A team, whilst Mark Devlin is showing up well at minor level this year and will make an even bigger impact next year, his final at minor level.
Next: training continues at 7.00pm on Thursdays and with a bit more commitment to training, Bredagh's first win of the season can't be far away. The League game with Warrenpoint next Monday has been postponed and should be refixed before the end of July. Watch this space.
Team: P Woods, M Devlin, M Mullan, R Smart, E Donnelly, P Doole, P Byrne, M McAfee, A O'Neill, D Hughes, N Colton, C White, M Guerin.

Ballygalget 8-15 Bredagh 0-6
League, Thursday June 22nd - Bredagh's resources at minor level were stretched to the limit due to examination and work commitments and the team travelled to the Ards with only 12 players. A poor first half in which five soft goals were conceded was followed by a much-improved second half performance where the Bredagh lads really put it up to their more illustrious opponents. Best for Bredagh were Eoghan Donnelly, Donal McKegney and Cormac Hughes while Mullan, Doole, Smart and Devlin put in good second half performances. This result reinforces the importance of training and practising the skills of the game. Some of the Bredagh boys had not picked up a hurl for four weeks due to exams while Ballygalget have been training twice a week. It showed.

Team: D Hughes, M Devlin, M Mullan, R Smart, D McKegney, E Donnelly, P Doole, P Byrne, M McAfee, C Hughes, C White, M Guerin.

Ulster Champions
Four Bredagh minor hurlers played at Ballybofey on Sunday June 4th before the Ulster SFC match between Donegal and Down. Paul Doole, Rowan Smart, Eoghan Donnelly and Paddy Byrne were in the Down panel for the Ulster Minor Hurling League Division 2 Final, which they won by 1-12 to 0-3. Paddy got the only goal and they all made history as it's the first time Down have won this competition.

Bredagh 3-2 Liatroim 4-11
League, Monday May 15th - it's all about competing, for this year at least. This is our first year in the Minor League and to be able to field for three games already in the toughest division, including a wet night away in Liatroim, is an achievement in itself. In every year after this, Bredagh will get stronger and stronger at minor level, so all credit goes to the forerunners (management and players) for getting it together in 2006 with limited resources.

MATCH REPORT
The game was 11 a-side on a very poor pitch and it was the Liatriom lads who adapted better to the conditions. They opened the scoring with an early goal and two points before Bredagh got started. A goal from Matthew McAfee after good work by O’Neill opened the scoring for Bredagh but Liatriom responded with 1-1 to keep control. Two points from Paul Doole looked like being the spark needed to get Bredagh going but Liatriom continued to take good scores and led by 2-7 to 1-2 at the break. In the second half, Bredagh raised their game considerably and two Donnelly goals from 20m frees cut the lead to three points with twenty minutes left. Bredagh continued to attack, forcing three fine saves from the Liatriom goalkeeper, however with injuries to team captain Paul Doole, and midfielder Cormac Hughes, as well as the loss of Eoghan Donnelly and Paddy Woods, there was no opportunity to build on the early comeback and Liatriom ran out winners. In truth, this was a poor performance from a young team that had played much better earlier in the season against stronger opposition. Best for Bredagh were Donnelly, Doole, O’Neill, McKegney and Woods. Paddy Byrne had a fine game when introduced as a second half replacement and will be pushing for a place on the starting line up.
Team & Scorers: Donal Hughes, Paddy Woods, Donal McKegney, Eoghan Donnelly 2-0, Micheal Mullan, Mark Devlin, Rowan Smart, Cormac Hughes, Paul Doole 0-2, Matthew McAfee 1-0, Aiden O’Neill, Micheal Guerin, Paddy Byrne, Conal Doherty, Danny Higgins.

TAKING A BREAK - the Minor League now takes a break for exams. The next game is away to Ballela/Ballyvarley on June 26th. Training continues at 6.30pm on Thursdays.

Bredagh 2-6 Portaferry 6-11
Second League match, Monday May 1st Bredagh put in another fine performance in Division 1 against a strong and very physical Portaferry team at Cherryvale. The Bredagh boys built on a great performance in their first outing against Ballycran and took the game to Portaferry in the opening exchanges only to fall behind to two Portaferry points and a soft goal. The Bredagh half back line were dominating their men and Donnelly, Duffin, Devlin and Mullan cut out Portaferry attack after attack, so providing a launch pad for the attack. At midfield Cormac Hughes and Rowan Smart worked hard and were supported by Costello, Doole and McAfee. Midway through the first half a Niall Colton point from play and two Paul Doole points from frees pulled the Belfast lads back into the game but Portaferry responded with a point from a free and another goal to leave them 2-4 to 0-3 ahead at the break.

Second-half - with only a couple of pucks of the ball in it, Bredagh raised their game and had Portaferry rattled. The defence weathered some early pressure with Woods, Higgins and McKegney standing firm to keep the opposition scoreless. Within five minutes team captain Paul Doole had scored a brilliant point from a 60m free and followed it up with a goal when he hit a 20m free to the net. For the home team White, Colton and Costello battled well up front but just when it looked like Bredagh were getting control of the game Portaferry regained their composure and responded with three unanswered points and a goal. Cormac Hughes stuck a great point form play for Bredagh but with the Belfast boys pushing forward and leaving ‘keeper Donal Hughes exposed, Portaferry managed another two breakaway goals to put the game beyond the South Belfast lads. With ten minutes left Bredagh went for broke, introducing subs Guerin and Feeney and moving O’Neill to full forward in an attempt to get goals. The changes had an immediate impact when Niall Colton struck to the net with a goal for Bredagh followed by a point from Mathew McAfee. Unfortunately it was too little too late.

Summary - this was another learning experience for the young Bredagh lads and they will use the lessons learned in these matches against the Ards clubs to good effect later in the League against sides from South Down and East Down.

Team & Scorers: Donal Hughes, Donal McKegney, Patrick Woods, Keven Duffin, Mark Devlin, Eoghan Donnelly, Aiden O’Neill, Rowan Smart, Cormac Hughes 0-1, Mathew McAfee 0-1, Paul Doole (capt) 1-3 Owen Costello, Michael Mullan, Niall Colton 1-1, Cormac White, Danny Higgins, Michael Guerin, Donal Feeney.

Bredagh 0-3 Ballycran 6-7
Bredagh's Minor hurlers made history by playing the club's first ever competitive match at this level in the Co Down Division One League against a very strong and skilful Ballycran. The scoreline of 6-7 to 0-3 suggests a one-sided affair, but the young Bredagh side (most of them U-16) matched their illustrious opponents for long periods of the game. Ballycran usually like to keep a clean sheet but Bredagh struck three times!

Ballycran managed to get goals at crucial stages and opened up a healthy lead by half-time, but credit to the Bredagh lads who never gave up and battled manfully to the end. Ballycran gave an exhibition of all that is good in hurling and it was clear to see why they are by far the best minor hurling team in Down and one of the best in Ulster. Their support play, passing and score-taking were excellent, and it was only due to some great work by the Bredagh defence that the Ballycran total was kept down.

This was an excellent learning experience for the Bredagh minor hurlers and it was a pleasure to witness their performance. Twelve of the 15 Bredagh players used on the night are eligible again for the minors next year, with 10 available for the year after too.

Paul Doole played with a foot injury, performing a superb captain's role. He was all over the pitch in defence and attack, scoring a fantastic point from a ground stroke at the start of the second half. Paul was well-supported by 'full minors' Aidan O'Neill and Eoghan Donnelly in defence, the outstanding Rowan Smart in his new midfield role and Mark Devlin, particularly after he dropped back into the half-back line. Special praise must be given to Bredagh's young guns, the excellent Donal McKegney (what a superb defensive exhibition he gave), Patrick Woods, goalkeeper Donal Hughes, corner-forward Cormac White and second-half substitutes Danny Higgins and Michael Guerin.

The clear message on the night was that Bredagh's future hurling prospects are very positive indeed and when some of the other experienced players, who were missing on the night, return to the fold, victories at this level will surely follow.

Team & Scorers: Donal Hughes, Donal McKegney, Patrick Woods, Aidan O'Neill, Eoghan Donnelly (0-1, free), Michael Mullan, Rowan Smart, Cormac Hughes, Matthew McAffee, Paul Doole (0-2, 1 free), Mark Devlin, Cormac White, Christian Hunter, Michael Guerin, Danny Higgins.

Bredagh fielded at minor level for the first time on Saturday February 11th in a challenge game against St Enda's, winning by 4-3 to 2-2.
