Under 8 Hurling

Matches against St Paul's
Saturday 3rd October

Bredagh under 8’s has their last outdoor session of the year with a couple of friendlies against St Paul’s Hollywood at Cherryvale.

The Older under 8’s were up against a strong, physical St Pauls team. At Bredagh’s request, St Paul’s played with a few under 10’s in order to get the South Belfast boys ready for next season. St Paul’s started the stronger dominating the early exchanges and took a few early scores. Strong defending from Tiernan Sheehan, Mel Lavery, Fintan McCollum and Evin Maguire kept the scores to a minimum. Jacob McDonnel’s great puck outs against a strong breeze relieved some of the pressure. The midfield pairing of Bruno Witkowski and Owen Cathcart then started to get on top providing the forward line of Patrick Broderick, Lughan O’Hare, Ciaran McMullan, Jude Lundy and Sean Hughes with a number of chances. Indeed the score of the match came from a sublime sideline cut from Sean Hughes which any senior hurler would be proud of.

Bredagh made a number of changes at half time bringing on Joe Gibson, Eoghan McKinley and Sean Starrs at the back and up front Colman Bernard, Patrick O’keefe, Conn McFarlane and Gairiad Hegney. And 2 fantastic goals from Gairiad put Bredagh in front. A further point from Sean Hughes stretched the lead, however a few late St Paul’s score meant a draw was probably a fair result.

The younger Bredagh team, boosted by a few of the older boys played St Pauls also. This was a well contested game with St Pauls just edging out the Bredagh boys. However everyone played really well. With stout defending from Liam Rodgers, Ruadhan Savage, Emmet McGirr, Conor Napier, Aiden Gibson and Ciaran Mallon. Midfielders Ultan Curran, Jarlath McCollum and Ronan McElroy battled continuously. Up front Finn Hacket, Ronan Bernard, Joe McCanny, James McPartan, Ben Hamersley along with Rory and Patrick Donaldson were always a theat.

The under 8s will now break until 7th November when we’ll move indoors. Keep an eye on bredaghgac.com for details. Many thanks to parents for their continued support.

Ballycran U8 hurling Mini Blitz
Bredagh sent down 2 teams to the Ballycran blitz. The first team up started against the home team. This was a very evenly contested game with the home team adding a bit of physicality to the game. The Bredagh boys were no overawed by this and a great Sean Hughes goal settled the team. Ballycran then scored 2 in quick succession only for Patrick Broderick to show his natural goal getting skills to get a late equaliser. A fair result all round. Jacob McDonnell was sound as ever in nets and was well protected by Tiernan Sheehan and Fintan McCollum at the back. Midfield was led by Owen Cathcart and ably assisted by the sweet striking Aaron Patterson. Up from Sean Hughes, Patrick Broderick and Evin Maguire were always a threat.

Portaferry then played Bredagh. This was a strong Portaferry team who came out 2-1 winners. The Bredagh goal was a screamer from the middle of the pitch from Mel Lavery. The team play well throughout. Conn McFarlane was very strong in nets. His back line of Luan O’Hare and Jude Lundy let little through. Mel Lavery and Bruno Witkowski were outstanding in midfield playing with boundless energy. Up front Jarlath McCollum and Gairiad Hegney came close on a number of occasions.

The last game was full 15-aside against Ballycran. The open spaces really suited the Bredagh lads who dominated this game in terms of possession. Goals were difficult to come by and it took a long range free from Owen Cathcart to break the dead lock. Ballycran though equalized with the last puck of the game.

Carryduff Blitz
Bredagh had 2 teams take part in the Under 8 blitz hosted by Carryduff.

Bredagh1 kicked off against Ballycran. Ballycran got off to a flyer with an early goal. The Bredagh defence of Aaron Patterson and Fintan McCollum settled and soon were on top. With Owen Cathcart and Sean Hughes starting to dominate around the middle, Bredagh were looking comfortable with 5 goals over of 10 minute spell blowing away the Ards men. The goals came from Sean Hughes, Evin Maguire (2), Jacob McDonnell and Patrick Broderick. Indeed Evin’s second goal was the pick, with superb link up plan with Patrick Broderick. Jacob’s goal from a puck out was also a joy to watch.
Final score Bredagh 5, Ballycran 2.

Bredagh2 then played the hosts and while Carryduff put up an early resistance, Bredagh came through as easy winners, winning 9-1. The goals came from Tiernan Sheehan, Jude Lundy (3), Mel Lavery (2), Oran McRuaghan, Evin Maguire and Ciaran McMullan. The team were well assisted with Parick O’Keefe in nets and Jarlath McCollum up front.

Bredagh2 were then up against Ballycran, and while Bredagh battled hard throughout, Ballycran came though winning by 2 goals.

The day then finished up with Bredagh2 playing Bredagh1. This proved to be a tough game and with both teams so evenly balanced the draw can be considered a fair result.

U8s v St Enda's

Match v St Enda's
Saturday 1st August

Bredagh under 8 hurlers played 2 hard fought games against St Endas

Bredagh-A 2 St Endas 3

St Endas got off to a flyer in this game despite great defensive work from Patrick O’Keefe in nets along with Joe Gibson and Conn McFarlane in the back line. Mel Lavery dominated the midfield area along with great support from Ciaran McMullan and Lughan O’Hare. Joe McCanny and Cormac Walls were always a threat up front. Ronan McElroy and Eoghan McKinley also played extremely well around the middle of the park.

Bredagh-B 5 St Endas 1

Bredagh B dominated this game from the start - goals from Patrick Broderick and Sean Hughes (2) setting the scene. Evin Maguire and Oran McRuaghan contributed significantly throughout the first half. Jude Lundy also looked lively and made the score sheet. Aaron Patterson was his usual dominant self in the middle of the ark with outstanding ground strokes. Fintan McCollum and Tiernan Sheehan were completely on top at the back while Jacob McDonnell was equally effective in nets with fantastic puck outs consistently picking out his men.

Ballycran Blitz
Bredagh under 8 hurlers entered the Ballycran blitz on Sunday 5th July missing a few regulars due to holidays.

Bredagh started with a warm up game against Portaferry Under 6’s who played with 3 additional players to make the proceedings a bit fairer. Indeed the Portaferry u6 team put up a very strong resistance packing the defence and Bredagh were not to score until the second half when Jacob McDonnell, Patrick Broderick and Owen Cathcart all made the score sheet.

The first competitive game was then against Portaferry under 8’s. Although Portaferry took an early lead, it was Bredagh who dominated proceedings winning 3-2 with all goals coming from the hurl of the impressive Patrick Broderick. Conn MacFarlane in goals and a full back line of Evin Maguire, Oran MacRuagan and Aaron Patterson let little through. Owen Cathcart was his usual brilliant self in the middle of the park along with Bruno Witkowski who worked tirelessly throughout. Up front Jacob McDonnell and Jarlath McCollum always looked a threat.

The final game was against the home Ballycran side that Portaferry had earlier beat. This was to prove a very tight game with nothing between the sides. Bredagh scored from a fantastic side line cut from Owen Cathcart but 2 goals from the Ballycran full forward meant that the spoils for the day were share equally between the 3 sides.

Many thanks to the parents for their continued support.

U7s team at St Paul's Blitz
Bredagh put forward a lively, enthusiastic and young U7 team for the blitz at St. Pauls’ Holywood. From the outset it was clear that the energy and commitment from the Bredagh beginners would cause trouble for the more experienced and older teams from Ballygalget and St. Pauls.

The competition started well with a no-show from Ballycran – clearly word of the task facing them had been leaked.

The first match was against a very capable Ballygalget team. Despite many attempts, Ballygalget could initially not breach the strong defence of Ronan Bernard in goals supported by Liam Rodgers, Ciaran Mallon and Tiernan Davies in defence.

A strong midfield was provided by David Field and Jarleth McCollum. This duo combined to thoroughly confuse the Ballygalget defence and score one of the best goals of the day. They both put in a powerful performance with neither being very far from the play at all times.

The Bredagh forwards attempted repeatedly to balance out the scoreboard, with fine performance by Emmet McGirr, Enda Gargan and Aedan Gibson. However, despite energetic input from Rory Donaldson, Peter McAreavey, Patrick Donaldson, Ronan Henaghan and Ronan Bernard, Ballygalget managed to chalk up a 3-1 win.

The second match saw the Bredagh team taking on the host team, St. Paul’s. This was a very close match with a nil-nil score line well through the first half. The defence team of Liam Rodgers in goals supported by Ciaran Mallon, Peter McAreavey and Rory Donaldson conceded only one goal in the first half.

David Field and Jarleth McCollum again put in a sold and capable performance in mid-field, teaming up with Tiernan Davies who scored the only Bredagh goal of the match.

In the second half, Emmet Rodgers proved that size was no match for determination – teaming up with Ciaran Mallon and Emmet McGirr to provide a convincing defensive line. It was only the age and experience of the slightly older St. Paul’s team that provided an additional two goals to give a final score of 3-1.

The U7 panel consisted of:
David Field
Ronan Henaghan
Ciaran Mallon
Jarlath McCollum
Tiernan Davies
Ronan Bernard
Liam Rodgers
Emmet Rodgers
Rory Donaldson

St Paul's Blitz
Bredagh entered 2 Under 8 teams and one Under 7 team in this hurling blitz at sun kissed Holywood.

Bredagh–1 started off against Portaferry, proving too strong for the Ards boys winning 4-0. The goals coming from Jude Lundy, Sean Hughes and Owen Cathcart (2). Jacob McDonnell was his usual solid self in goals and Aaron Patterson clearing up everything in defence. Patrick Broderick and Evin Maguire were always looking dangerous up front.

Bredagh-1 also had an impressive 5-1 win over the host team St Pauls. Again Sean Hughes made the score sheet with a hat trick this time along with great goals from Patrick Broderick and Patrick O’Keefe. Lughan O’Hare was also a very lively up front, causing the St Pauls defence many problems. Fintan McCollum and Colman Bernard were consistently solid at the back.

Bredagh-1 then finished off their games with their most impressive display, beating Ballycran 4-2, the goals coming from Jude Lundy and Sean Hughes (3). Mel Lavery also had a notable performance in this game up front.

Bredagh-2 had a tough first game against Ballycran going down 3-1 with Sean Starrs scoring for Bredagh. It was a good performance overall against one of the tournament favourites with great performances from Joe Gibson and Oliver Henaghan at the back. James McPartlan and Cormac Walls were always busy around midfield along with Bruno Witkowski. Mark Cleary, James McNamee and James Hamill always threatened up front in this game.

Against the home team Bredagh-2 played very well, losing narrowly. Ultan Curran scored a great goal in the second half. Strong defending from Gareth Hegney kept the St Pauls mean out and limited them to 2 goals.

Ironically the only team to beat Bredagh-1 was Bredagh-2, in a game where lifting and striking from the hand was allowed. The Bredagh-2 boys came away with a 3-1 win. Sean Hughes assisted in the Bredagh-2 team here and he grabbed 2 goals with James Hamill getting the 3rd. Owen Cathcart scoring the Bredagh-1 goal with a rasping drive from midfield.

Ballygalget Blitz
Bredagh sent down 2 under 8 teams to take part in the under 8 blitz in Ballygalget.

Bredagh-1 kicked off against the host team and favourites. This was a very tight game with nothing between the sides. One of the highlights of the first half being a point blank safe by Jacob McDonnell. With Jude Lundy and Owen Cathcart battling for everything in midfield Bredagh were always in with a shout of winning this one. However a well taken point by the Ballygalget was enough to see them nose in front at the final whistle.

Bredagh-2 were then up against a very strong physical Ballycran side. Bredagh competed extremely well with Ciaran McMullan doing well in goals with some fantastic puck outs. Joe Gibson and Tieran Sheehan were strong at the back. Jacob McDonnell assisted in this game also and did well in midfield, as did Eoghan McKinley. Patrick Broderick scored a very well taken goal only for the Ballycran umpire to disallow it. Jarlath McCollum also looked a threat upfront. Lughan O’Hare and Mel Lavery came on to good effect in the second half. However it was the stronger Ballycran team who won in the end by 3.

Bredagh-2 were then up against Ballygalget. Again the boys fought well with young Ciaran Mallon making an appearance to good effect.

Bredagh-1 were on at the same time against Portaferry and out classed the Ards team in every sector of the field, winning 7-0. The goal scorers were Jude Lundy (4), Sean Hughes (2) and Evin Maguire (1).

The last game was Bredagh-1 against Ballycran with Bredagh out for revenge for the earlier game. Bredagh again dominated proceedings but it was Ballycran who nicked a goal at the start of the second half giving Mel Lavery no chance. Bredagh continued to be solid at the back with Aaron Patterson and Fintan McCollum. Owen Cathcart yet again exhibited some top class ground hurling and formed a great partnership with Jude Lundy in midfield. Evin Maguire also showed some intelligent play up front. It was Sean Hughes who pulled one back for Bredagh setting up an exciting finish. Bredagh dominance was such that they created about half a dozen chances only to see them go narrowly wide. Bredagh got the deserved win with a late second goal from Sean Hughes.

Overall this was a great days hurling. Many thanks to the parents who travelled down with the teams.

U8 North Antrim Blitz
Larne Blitz
This was an Indoor hurling Blitz with a difference: it was played outside. Yes when the caretaker of St Comgalls School in Larne failed to show up on Saturday morning to open up it looked like a wasted journey. But with the help of some cones and the close proximity of a nearby park 2 pitches were hastily lined out and it was game on. There was a further setback in that 3 of the scheduled teams failed to show up leaving just Bredagh, Cushendun and St Endas. However a fourth ream was formed made up of subs from the 2 Antrim teams. Each team therefore got 3 games of 20 minute duration each and so what initially looked like a disaster turned into a very good mornings hurling particularly for Bredagh as they took the honours winning all 3 games.

Game 1
Bredagh 11 Cushendun/St Endas 0

Owen Cathcart struck an early goal for Bredagh and it was one way traffic thereafter. By half time Sean Hughes had bagged a hatrick Owen hit a second and Jacob McDonnell also hit the net as Bredagh led 6-0 at the break. It was more of the same in the second half as the young subs from Cushendun and St Endas had no answer to the sweet striking of the Bredagh boys. It was Hughes 2, Cathcart 2 and McDonnell 1 who struck again for further goals in the second half and the Antrim boys who battled throughout, were relieved to hear the final whistle. Patrick Cox, Teirnan Quinn and Aaron Patterson were superb in defence.

Game 2
Bredagh 6 Cushendun 0

This was a tougher match but again the young Bredagh boys were in excellent form, scoring 3 smashing goals in each half and defending brilliantly to deny the glensmen a single score. Again Sean Hughes and Owen Cathcart were too hot to handle up front, Sean getting a hatrick and Owen a brace the other a lovely strike from Teirnan Quinn.

Game 3
Bredagh 6 St Endas 3

This was the decider as both teams had won their first 2 matches and what a battle it turned out to be. St. Endas made a great start, hammering in 2 early goals but the Bredagh boys did not panic and slowly fought their way back into contention. They pulled a goal back just before the break when Jacob McDonnell hit the corner of the St Endas net. Half time Bredagh 1 St endas 2. Bredagh were a more determined team in the second half and it was that boy Cathcart again who hit 2 goals in quick succession to edge Bredagh ahead. St Endas equalised and after Teirnan Quinn put the Belfast boys ahead again there was only going to be one winner. Sean Hughes banged in 2 late goals to take his tally for the day to a phenomenal 10. Bredagh defence held out and they eased to victory and took the title on the day.

The squad
Patrick Cox was solid in the Bredagh goals and played well in defence when called upon. Aaron Patterson was also superb with his long driven shots out of defence. Teirnan Quinn was fearless in the tackle, a rock in the defence and even popped up for 2 great goals. Jacob McDonnell showed skill and class up front and scored 3 lovely goals. Owen Cathcart, the youngest member of the squad is one to look out for in the future. He covered every blade of grass and his ground stroke is a joy to watch and for the record he hit 8 goals on the day. And then we have Sean Hughes the mifield maestro and playmaker who certainly has an eye for goal.

Ballymena Blitz
A second u8 hurling squad traveled to St Patrick’s College, Ballymena to take part in the enjoyable North Antrim Blitz. 5 games were played in total. Although Tir na Og and Rossa failed to show, Ballycastle had plenty of kids to field 2 teams, as did Glenravel (with help from Matthew Lyttle and Patrick O’Keefe and different times in the tournament).

Game 1
GlenravelA 3 Bredagh 1

Bredagh started the tournament against the strongest side on the day and were slow to start. Glenravel dominated the early proceedings and bagged 3 early goals despite good work by the Bredagh boys. Evin Maguire scored mid way through the game and despite dominating the latter part of the game, Bredagh were unable to break down as solid Cong Magees back line.

Game 2
GlenravelB 2 Bredagh 1

Bredagh took an early lead through an opportunistic goal by Jude Lundy and looked on top through great work by Bruno Witkowski and Fintan McCollum in defense. Patrick O’Keefe also performed some great stops in nets. But Glenravel were to score 2 very late goals to grab both points

Game 3
Bredagh 6 Ballycastle B 1

Bredagh were now finding a rhythm and completely outplayed the young McQuillans side with 4 great goals from Jude Lundy, and singles from Evin Maguire and Bruno Witkowski. Patrick O’keefe was always reliable in nets and Fintan McCollum solid in defense.

Game 4
Bredagh 1 Ballycastle A 1

This was a very tight affair with a strong Ballycastle team providing tough opposition and they took an early lead. But Bredagh were on top for the remainder of the game, with Matthew Lyttle taking over goalkeeping responsibilities. Bredagh got the reward with a well taken goal by Jude Lundy to share the points.

Game 5
Bredagh 2 Ballymena All Saints 0

Bredagh completed their last game against the home side and again dominated this game. The goals came from Evin Maguire and Jude Lundy . Matthew Lyttle was a rock in defense and Patrick O’Keefe came close at the end on a number of occasions.

St John's tournament

In the group stage the young Bredagh hurlers put in two fantastic performances to beat Portaferry and a fancied Sarsfields side. They lost out at the semi-final stage by a single point to a strong Ballygalget team, not conceding a single score from play all day – Ballygalget’s scores coming from frees.

Ballycran U8 Blitz, 28th June 2008
The Bredagh U8 squad were on their travels again as they headed to McKenna Road , Ballycran for the U8 blitz. Bredagh entered 2 teams in the tournament.

Bredagh I started proceedings with a comprehensive 9-0 win over Ballycran II. Sean Hughes (3), Conor O’Keefe (2) Niall McFarland (2) and Lucas Mallon (2) all finding the score sheet. A water tight defence including Dylan Kerrigan and Aaron Patterson kept the home team scoreless.

Ballycran ‘s stronger first team then played the Bredagh II team . This was a very tight affair and resulted in a draw, Dara Curran making the scoresheet with a fine run from midfield. The defensive line of Eoin Cathcart, Matthew Rainbird and Aodhan O’Keefe performing heroics.

Bredagh I were then up against a strong Ballygalget team. This game could have gone either way, with Ballygalget nosing ahead in the last minute to win 4-3. Bredagh’s goals came from Conor O’Keefe, David Fields and Sean Hughes. James Jack Gracey had a great game in goals and Joseph Hanrahan worked extremely hard in midfield. 2 of Ballygalget’s goals came with Dylan Kerrigan off the field getting treatment for injuries.

Bredagh II were then up against Ballycran II, with the result a record breaking 16-0 win for Bredagh, scorers were Eoin Cathcart (6, yes 6), Patrick O’Keefe (2), Cillian Durkin (1), Aodhan O’Keefe (3), Dara Curran (2), Matthew Rainbird (1), Jarlath McCollum (1). Portaferry U8 Tournament, 24th May 2008

The Bredagh U8 squad had a great day out on Saturday in Portaferry, entering three 9-aside teams in the tournament.

It was a tough opener for the Bredagh 1 team, up against a strong Ballycran team and they went down 4-0 despite some brave defending from the likes of Brunion Witkowski and Eoin Cathcart. Bredagh came very close to scoring on a number of occasions, Patrick O’Keefe showing well in the danger area. However out of the 9 games to be played by all the Bredagh teams on the day this was to be the only defeat.

Next up was Bredagh 2 against Ballela, with a scoreless draw being fought out. Bredagh were by far the better team in this game, and would have surely won but for some fine goalkeeping by the Ballela number 1. Ciaran McMullan showed well in nets with Lorcan Sheridan and Evin Maguire strong in defence. The Field brothers, Jonathan and David were always a threat.

Bredagh 3 then lined up against Ballycran, with this Bredagh team winning the first of a clean sweep of victories, winning 3-1. Sean Hughes and Dara Curran on the score sheet. Lucas Mallon has a fine game between the posts along with Joseph Hanrahan lording the midfield.

Bredagh 1 then won their first game, beating Ballycran II, 5 goals to 1. The goals coming from Aodhan O’Keefe (2), Matthew Lyttle (2) and Jarlath McCollum. Fine goalkeeping from Fintan McCollum and great skill shown by Jude Lundy and Aaron Patterson meant there was no way in for the Ballycran boys.

Bredagh 3 then had a fine 5-1 win against hosts Portaferry with Sean Hughes on the score sheet again along with Joseph Blaney and Connor O’Keefe. Niall McFarland and Dylan Kerrigan were letting nothing through at the back, while Cillian Durkin showed fantastic skill throughout.

Bredagh 1 and Bredagh 3 then played, with Bredagh 3 again victors. In the final game of the day Bredagh 2 beat Ballycran II by 3 goals to one, a hat trick from the outstanding Odhran Davis. Odhrán Deighan, Ultán Curran and Colman Bernard were outstanding in defense while Matthew Rainbird dominating in the middle 3rd.

This rounded off a fine day’s hurling for the Bredagh’s youngest hurlers. Many thanks for the continued support from parents.

North Antrim u8 Div 2 Final
There was disappointment for Bredagh' youngest hurlers on Saturday when they lost the Division 2 final of the North Antrim Indoor Hurling Competion. They did however do the club proud as they put in a great performance before going down 4-2 to a very skilfull Glenshesk team which is picked from 2 clubs; Carey Faughs and Glen Rovers (Armoy).

Glenshesk were quick out of the blocks and scored within seconds of the throw in. Bredagh were rocked by this early goal and before they could regain their composure the glensmen fired in a second and it looked like they might overpower the Belfast boys. But Bredagh had come too far in this competition to give in without a fight and soon settled to the task. Joseph Hanrahan, Joseph Blaney and Ronan Costello laid seige to the Glenshesk goals in the second quarter of the game but the Glens defence was superb and there was no way through. Approaching half time a Glenshesk forward put in a rather inoccuous cross from right in the corner. The ball seemed to pass through the sidenetting before nestling in the Bredagh goal. The referee saw it differently and awarded a goal, leaving Bredagh 3-0 down at the break and a mountain to climb in the second half.

But the boys showed no sign of despondency during the half time team talk and with some changes in personell they came out in the second half all guns blazing. With Joseph Hanrahan and Cillian Durkan controlling midfield Bredagh's fightback began. First Hanrahan cooly slotted home and then Ronan Costello fired in a second and at 3-2 it looked like Bredagh might press on for victory. But it was not to be as again Glenshesk tightened their rearguard. With resourses deployed in trying to find an equaliser Glenshesk on a counter attack scored again to leave them 4-2 winners at the final whistle.

The parents and supporters who made the trip to Ballymena and to the qualifying games over the previous 2 weeks were mighty proud of every single member of this young Bredagh squad. The defeat in the final was only their second of an 11 match campaign.

U8 Hurlers to contest Division 2 Final

After their heroics last week in Larne the Bredagh U8 hurlers went one better at Ballymena on Saturday when they took division 2 by storm going through their program of 5 matches unbeaten to finish top of the pile and qualify for next weeks final against runners up Glenshesk. The young Bredagh hurlers played with tremendous skill and determination to finish the day with 3 wins and 2 draws in this tough group that saw them compete against, Glenshesk, Glenarm, Ballymena, Strabane and Larne

1st game
The first game of the day was Bredagh v Glenshesk and the Belfast boys got off to a great start when Sean Hughes scored an early goal followed by another from Conor O'Keefe. But the boys from Carey and Armoy fought back and leveled the game. Bredagh went ahead again through Joseph Blaney but again the Glensmen forced an equaliser and the game finished all square at 3-3.

2nd game
In the second game Bredagh found themselves paired with another team from the Glens, Glenarm. This was another tough match but with Joseph Hanrahan running the show at midfield and Cillian Durkan sweeping up in defence Bredagh were soon on top and took the 2 points with goals from Lucas Mallon and young Hanrahan.
Final score Bredagh 2 0 Glenarm

3rd Game
This was a tense low scoring affair against a very impressive host team, All Saints, Ballymena. Aodhan O'Keefe was excellent in defence and anything that got past him was well dealt with by keeper Teirnan Quinn. Joseph Blaney working hard at midfield got his second goal of the day to put Bredagh ahead but they just couldn't hold out and All Saints did manage an equaliser to leave them tied at 1-1 at the final whistle.

4th game
Strabane were the opposition for the 4th game and despite early pressure by Bredagh it was the Tyrone boys who took the lead against the run of play. Joseph Hanrahan was getting more impressive with every game and he leveled with a sweet strike and then put Bredagh ahead moments later. Cillian Durkan cracked in a third to leave the final score 3-1 in Bredaghs favour.

5th game
By this stage of the competition Bredagh had their sights firmly set on a place in the final and knew that a win in the last game would take them through. They were up against the Larne team who had beaten them 2-1 in the qualifiers the previous week. But the boys were more composed and focussed on this occasion and with Ronan Costello having moved from midfield to a striking role the Larne defense were under pressure from the outset. Ronan went on to thump in 2 great goals and with the Bredagh boys fighting for every ball there was only going to be one winner.

U8 Hurlers at Larne

U8s compete in Larne
Bredagh U8 hurlers were in fine form on Saturday morning when they competed in the North Antrim Indoor 5 a side competition at Larne. In this prelimiary round of matches they were in a tough group with the hosts Larne, Glenravel, Ballygalget, Cushendall and Glenariffe. But the young Belfast boys put in some excellent performances to finish with 2 wins 2 draws and only one defeat.

1st Game
They lost the first match to a big and phisically strong Larne team by the narrowest of margins on a scoreline of 2-1 the Bredagh goal coming from star midfielder Joseph Blaney.

2nd Game
The second game against Glenravel was another tight affair and this time it ended in a draw 2-2 with Odhran Davis and Cillian Durkan finding the net for Bredagh.

3rd Game
In Bredagh's third game they were paired with Down neighbours Ballygalget and this proved to be another end to end battle. The Ards boys took the lead but Joseph Blaney blasted in an equaliser to leave them tied at 1-1 on the final whistle.

4th Game
Bredagh were growing in confidence with every game and they finished strongly with victories in their final 2 games. The Glenariffe match looked like it might finish goalless as the 2 defences dominated but with time running out Conor O'Keefe broke free to crack in a winning goal.

Final Game
The final game was against North Antrim kingpins Cushendall but the boys from Bredagh had no respect for tradition as they showed great determination and skill and won through 2-0, young Blaney again on target with 2 more quality goals.

Summary
The panel of 10 all contributed to the sucess. The goal keeping duties were shared between Lucas Mallon and Teirnan Quinn and both were in excellent form with superb saves and distribution. At the back Aodhan O'Keefe was a rock and Niall McFarland gave an exhibition in long striking. Around the centre we had master goalscorer Joseph Blaney along with Joseph Hanrahan who showed incredible skill and energy. Also in this sector was Cillian Durkan who was strong in the tackle and Conor O'Keefe who's crisp ground stroke was rewarded with that goal against Glenariffe. Up front there was Odhran Davis who showed his class in keeping the opposition keepers busy, and the youngest member of the panel Sean Hughes whos tigerish tackling and awareness set up many opportunities for his teammates

Bredagh will be in action again next week. Due to their sucesses on Saturday they are likely to find themselves in a high division. Venue and opposition are awaited.
