Bredagh Vs Downpatrick 31st May 2009 Bredagh Ladies extended their lead in the Down Senior League on a hot Sunday evening.
The Belles were not complacent coming into this game as they knew Downpatrick were fresh from a Championship defeat against Clonduff- a game they should have won.
In saying that, the Belles started strong winning the throw in with the McCann sisters in midfield. The ball was passed into the square to Caroline Kelly were she slotted the ball into the back of the net. CK followed this up with a point as Bredagh settled into the game. The first half flowed with some of the best football we have seen from the girls this year- the quick passes and one-twos were too much for Downpatrick and Bredagh stormed in front. The half time score ended up Bredagh 5.05 Downpatrick 0.01.
The Belles started as strong in the second half with great performances all over the pitch. Downpatrick had no answer to the firepower from the Bredagh Forwards as the game finished 7:12 to 0:4.
Team: F McAtamney, N Doherty, Mora McCann, G Campbell, M McDonald, J Agnew, J Clarke, G McCann, Mary McCann, P Moane 0.01, C Timoney 1.05, K O’Neill, Ciara Moane 1.04, C Kelly 5.01, V Mallet. Subs: Cassie Moane 0.01
Bredagh can extend their lead again on Tuesday night when they play host to Clonduff in Cherryvale at 7.00.
Bredagh Belles through to the 2009 Down Championship semi final! BREDAGH 4-15 BRYANSFORD 2-02
“Some of the best football played in a Bredagh jersey this year” comments of a spectator at Cherryvale on Saturday evening, well articulated the Bredagh Ladies Senior team’s convincing quarterfinal championship win over Bryansford.
There was a tentative start to the game by both teams and a somewhat nervous looking Bredagh team allowed Bryansford the opening point of the match. An exchange of points by both teams left the scoreline 0-2 to 0-2 after 10mins but then points from Julie McLoughlin and Caroline Kelly and a fantastic goal from Clare Timoney settled the nerves of the Bredagh Belles who then began to dominate the match. The half back line including Kerrie O’Neill and Marita McDonald won a lot of breaking ball and combined with surging runs really put the Bryansford defence on the rack. Points from Polly Moane , Victoria Mallet and Caroline Kelly followed by another goal by Clare Timoney , leaving the visitors somewhat shell shocked . Bryansford had opted to play with a four woman forward line, hoping to capitalise on the space that this would leave. However, the Bredagh defence matched the Bryansford forward line for pace and coupled with a greater tenacity managed to prevent any more Bryansford scores for the rest of the half. The first half drew to a close with a fantastic long range point from Polly Moane . Five of the six forwards for Bredagh had scored from play in the first half as Bredagh went into the break leading 2-08 to 0-02.
Any hopes from the Bryansford camp for Bredagh complacency, going into the second half, were quickly dispelled. Aoife McDonnell, determined not to be the only forward without a score hit 3 quality points in quick succession. Julie McLoughlin, whose pace tortured the Bryansford defence all evening, then found the back of the net with a well taken goal. Bredagh had started the second half as they had finished the first half, in complete control. Credit to Bryansford, they did not give up but time after time their attempts at breaking the Bredagh defence failed. The tenacity of Geraldine Campbell and Nuala Doherty ensured that Byransford forwards were not given time on the ball and it was only after, what some thought was an obvious foul on a Bredagh defender did Bryansford registered their first score of the second half in the shape of a goal. Winning the subsequent kickout, as they had done consistently throughout the match, Bredagh’s midfield carried the ball into the heart of the Bryansford defence and an intelligent lay off to Victoria Mallet resulted in her scoring her second of three points for the evening. By this stage Clare Timoney was in line for a hat trick of goals and true to form, found the back of the net again with a very stylish shot. Cassie Moane then came on as substitute for the injured Gerardine McCann. Along side sister Mary, Gerardine had dominated midfield and twenty minutes to go left the field having put in a very good performance. It did not take Cassie long to get involved in the play and was very unlucky to not score from a splendid strike of the ball of the ground. While Bryansford managed to score another goal , it was a late consolation at that stage of the game. The Bredagh defence, marshalled well by Maura McCann in full back and lead by Captain Jenny Agnew in centre back had, as in the first half, restricted the Bryansford forwards to only 2 scores.
Fittingly though, the final score of the game, another point, was a Bredagh one. The move involved several Bredagh players as they quickly moved ball from defence into attack. It was a score that epitomised the strength of this current Bredagh team. The ability to turn over the ball in defence is the capitalised on by a midfield that has a tremendous work rate as well as great distribution , finished off by a forward line that is littered with talent and skill.
A final score of 4-15 to 2-02 indicates a convincing performance from the Bredagh Belles but there is a sense that there is more to come from this current squad. Post match analysis concluded a deserved Mary McCann as woman of the match. Her work rate was tremendous in midfield, breaking down many Bryansford attack as well as setting up numerous Bredagh attack. If not for some wayward shooting Mary could also have found herself on the score sheet at both ends of the pitch. Bredagh Belles are grateful for good turn out of support for the match and hope to avail of it again as they move into the semi finals of the Down Championship.
Team : Fionnuala McAtamney, Geraldine Campbell, Maura McCann, Nuala Doherty, Kerrie O’Neill, Jenny Agnew, Marita McDonald, Gerardine McCann , Mary McCann, Polly Moane 0-2, Clare Timoney 3-3, Victoria Mallet 0-3, Caroline Kelly 0-2, Aoife McDonnell 0-3, Julie McLoughlin 1-2, Subs used Cassie Moane
The Championship comes to Cherryvale! On Saturday 23rd May the Bredagh Belles will be aiming to take a further step forward in their bid to challenge for the Down senior championship. The Belles have home advantage for the match which will take place at 7pm in Cherryvale against a strong Bryansford team.
The Bredagh senior ladies are finding good form at this stage in the season. Three wins out of four in the league leaves them in joint second place with their upcoming opponents Bryansford. This sets the scene for a fascinating match as both teams are settling nicely into the football season. Interestingly, Bredagh’s only dropped points this year so far have been against Bryansford, who narrowly beat the Belles in the league by two points. This should provide extra motivation, if it is needed, to win back the advantage from the Newcastle girls, and where better to do it than on the Down championship stage.
Bredagh were drawn in the preliminary round of the championship but a strong performance against Castlewellan earlier in the month resulted in a nine point win over the south Down team – scoreline of 3-14 to 2-8.
New manager Colm Joyce, ably assisted by old hand Lorraine McCaffrey, has made great strides forward with the team this year with a fresh approach to training. The team has been bolstered with the addition of new transferees who have made Bredagh their home. The great fortunes of the Down ladies team has also been to the benefit of the Belles – stalwarts of the ladies side Kerrie O’Neill and Emma Mulhern featured in the starting fifteen in Down’s historic win over Tipperary in the recent National League Division Two final. This pair, along with other veterans such as Fionnuala McAtamney, Geraldine Campbell and Polly Moane, add an experienced dimension to the team.
Victory in this match would result in a semi-final appearance in August. With the Belles hoping to go one better than last year, when they were defeated in the final, a first-class performance will be required on Saturday.
All Bredagh members are encouraged to go to Cherryvale and show your support for the ladies – it is rare indeed that a championship match comes into Belfast, so lets all make sure that the home venue acts as a trump card for the battling Belles. See you there!
CShip - Bredagh beat Castlewellan Bredagh Ladies secured their place in the next round of the Championship after a convincing win last weekend against a highly favoured Castlewellan side.
Bredagh started well with Emma Mulhern getting the first point of the match with a few minutes gone. Further scores in the first half came from Julie McLoughlin, Claire Timoney, Vicky Mallet and Caroline Kelly to leave the half time score as: Bredagh 2-05 Castlewellan 0-04
Polly Moane got the Belles first score in the 2nd half as the girls knew they couldn’t afford to take their foot off the pedal!
Scores from Caroline Kelly, Vicky Mallet, Kerrie O’Neill, Claire Timoney and Julie McLoughlin ensured Bredagh’s championship was not yet over despite Castlewellan scoring two second half goals. However it was too late for the Castlewellan girls and they now face a long summer with no championship football.
This was a great team performance by the Belles with all sections of the pitch playing well.
Team & Scorers: Fionnula McAtamney, Nuala Doherty, Maura McCann, Geraldine Campbell, Jenny Agnew (c), Aoife McDonnald, Marita McDonald, Mary McCann, Kerrie O’Neill, Polly Moane, Claire Timoney, Vicky Mallet, Emma Mulhern, Julie McLoughlin, Caroline Kelly. Up next for the Bredagh Belles is Byransford on the 23 May in Cherryvale. As this is a home game for the Belles we ask the whole club to come out and support us!
University Football Bredagh Ladies also had many representatives in the Colleges All-Ireland held in Jordanstown last weekend with many of them walking away with top honours.
In the Donaghy Shield 5 of the panel for Queens II hailed from Bredagh and congratulations to all for coming away winners of the Shield! Those involved were Laura Willighan, Suzie Irwin, Jamie Willighan, Aishlinn McCloskey and Niamh McCafferty. Well Done girls!
In the most prestigious of the competitions, the O’Connor cup, the semi-finals saw Queens bow out to UL after extra time whilst Jordanstown also lost to DCU. Bredagh had representatives on both teams with Emma Mulhern, Hannah Murray and Vicky Mallet showing well for Queens and new comers to the Bredagh Squad Claire Timoney and Aoife McDonnell fighting the cause for the Poly. Congratulations to Vicky who received a replacement All-Star for her efforts over the weekend.
Congratulations also goes to Grainne Hughes who played for UCD over the weekend, who battled hard in the final stages of the Lynch Shield.
Last but not least we must not forget to mention the managerial team of Arlene McCloskey and Cathy Gallager who took Queens to the semi-finals of the O’Connor Cup.
Well done to all involved, and with many girls fresh out of a season lets continue the effort at training and bring the silver home to Bredagh this year!
Senior Ladies v Rostrevor Senior Ladies v Rostrevor
Sat 11 April 2009-Cherryvale
Bredagh ladies made it two from two as they continued their good league start with a convincing win over newly-promoted Rostrevor in Cherryvale on Saturday. Having just voted Jenny Agnew as captain for the year, the Bredagh Belles confidently started the game from the throw-in, Victoria Mallet picking up the first break of the day and feeding through to Caroline Kelly in the full forward line for the first score. This was to be Caroline’s first point from a tally of 4-06 for the day from the corner forward. And Caroline was not the only forward to stamp her mark on the game. The forward unit really found a successful method of working together and passing quickly to outwit the Rostrevor defence. Bredagh debutantes Julie McLaughlinand Claire Timoney added 1-2 and 2-02 respectively with sustained hard work. None of the forwards was content to see the ball cross the half way line, as half forwards Kerry O’Neill and Polly Moane continually broke down any early Rostrevor attacks with pressure on their defence and clever reading of the ball. Kerry scored 0-1 and Polly added 0-3, with one point in particular coming from Polly’s great run through the middle of the field from the half way line. Emma Mulhern, as usual, belied her size and caused havoc for the Rostrevor defence, adding a point from play. However, the contribution of the defence and midfield cannot be underestimated either, having kept Rostrevor to a scoreline of 1-02. Geraldine Campbell was frequently found in the Rostrevor half, making probing runs through the middle of the field. Victoria Mallet too frequently intercepted the Rostrevor attacks. Nuala Doherty marshalled her area well, and Mary McCann had a great game at full back, making some key blocks. Martita McDonald, marking one of Rostrevors best players also had a great game, in which was her first league outing for Bredagh having transferred in this year.
Maura McCann was rarely troubled and dealt with any loose ball effectively. Hannah Murray at half back had a fantastic game, continually beating her opposite number to the ball and putting in some fine tackles. Jenny Agnew played the game with the responsibility of the captain’s position and had a fine outing, confidently carrying the ball out of the danger areas. Fionnuala McAtamney was rarely troubled in goal, and her kickouts consistently found a Bredagh player.
A number of substitutes were introduced throughout the match. Ciara Moane replaced Victoria Mallet and played on the right, contributing a point. Cassie Moane also came on to great effect, with two points to her name. Even Lisa Kelly, a proven back, made her mark in the full forward line when she replaced Julie McLaughlin, adding a point.
Final score: Bredagh 9-20 Rostrevor 1-02
Team: Fionnuala McAtamney, Jenny Agnew (capt), Mary McCann, Maura McCann, Hannah Murray, Marita McDonald, Nuala Doherty, Geraldine Campbell, Victoria Mallett, Kerry O’Neill, Claire Timoney, Polly Moane, Caroline Kelly, Julie McLaughlin, Emma Mulhern. Subs Used: Ciara Moane, Cassie Moane, Lisa Kelly.
Bredagh v Annaclone Sunday 22 March heralded the opening of the league campaign for the senior ladies, in the form of a home match against Annaclone. It would be the first outing for the new manager, Colm Joyce, ably assisted by Lorraine McCaffrey.
Both teams began by observing a minute’s silence in honour of the memory of Martin Cunningham, father of team mate Amy, and from the outset it was clear that the girls wanted to do their best for their absent team mate.
Right from the throw-in the Bredagh Belles made their intentions clear, with Geraldine McCann winning the first ball of the season. The ball moved straight up the field and was coolly slotted over the bar by Polly Moane.
Then came the turn of the defence to warm up, the resulting kick-out making its way down as far as Geraldine Campbell in the full back line where some great defence work released the ball to the right wing, from where it was kicked up in the direction of Caroline Kelly (CK) who made it two for Bredagh.
The strong wind did not favour Bredagh in the first half, as a few well-directed scoring attempts drifted to the left after the Bredagh forwards drew a number of fouls.
The forward unit was gelling well together as some skilful football displayed by CK and Eimer Proctor resulted in Victoria Mallet being put through on goal where she cleverly placed the ball beyond the keeper’s reach, leaving it 1-02 to no score.
An injury to an Annaclone player gifted them a free which was missed. The ball was carried back up the field through a combination of Mary McCann and Cassie Moane where Polly Moane was brought down for a free, which she duly converted.
The Bredagh backs were to remain under-utilised for the next passage of play as another point was scored, this time by the goal taker Victoria Mallet.
Annaclone were then to get their first score of the game which few would have begrudged. However Bredagh would cancel out the point with a free by Polly Moane, leaving it 1-5 to 0-1. A dubious decision denied an Eimer Proctor point due to indecision from an umpire. This was mitigated by another point from CK as a result of some great fielding and handling by Victoria Mallet.
Grainne Hughes then entered into the very busy Annaclone half, replacing Eimer Proctor.
A great tackle by Geraldine Campbell forced a wide from Annaclone. The kick-out was won by Mary McCann and fed through to Polly Moane who sent it sailing over the bar despite the strong breeze.
The first half was brought to a close with Bredagh very much on top, 1-7 to 0-1, with the defence rarely tested thanks to the hard working middle third of the field, with some sterling work by Emma Mulhern, Kerrie O’Neill and Jenny Agnew who provided great cover for the full back line.
The second half opened brightly for the Belles, Victoria Mallet scoring following a misplaced pass by Annaclone. Maura McCann came onto the field for Mary McCann who had a superb first competitive outing in a Bredagh jersey. Maura took Kerrie O’Neill’s half back position, sending the Down player to midfield.
The hard-working Polly Moane got her fifth point at this stage, although it was followed up by an Annaclone point at the other end of the field.
Clare Byrne was not to be outdone, sending over a point from the right.
Jenny Agnew would intercept the resulting Annaclone attack to send the ball up to CK who made sure of her score.
At this stage Cassie Moane, who marshalled the left side of the field, was replaced by another young star, Peita McAllister. Following this, CK was fouled and converted with ease.
Hannah Murray was coming more and more into the game in the second half, and dispossessed her opposite number countless times to feed the ball through to the midfield.
One of Hannah’s clever movements resulted in another Clare Byrne point after a great hand-pass from Peita McAllister.
Caroline Kelly then stepped up another gear to grab her fourth and fifth points of the game, both from play, through a combination of great running and some excellent ball through from Kerrie, Geraldine and the half forwards.
The defence found itself coming under more pressure in the final minutes of the game, but Lisa Kelly, who had kept her charge effectively marked out of the game, never lost concentration and fed a number of balls safely out of danger.
Fionnuala McAtamney was rarely tested, but was safe under the high balls that came towards her. The stiff breeze would hamper many a goalkeeper’s kick outs but not so for Fionnuala, whose experience was vital in placing the ball carefully into Bredagh hands in high winds.
Annaclone put over two consolation points in the final minutes but the game was to finish as it began, with a Bredagh score, this time from the boot of CK.
This was a successful opening for Bredagh as they marked their intent under the new manager. However, harder tests lie ahead in the senior league this year, and the Belles need to continue with the hard work and dedication to win some silverware this year.
Team: Fionnuala McAtamney, Lisa Kelly, Geraldine Campbell, Hannah Murray, Emma Mulhern, Jenny Agnew, Kerrie O’Neill, Geraldine McCann, Mary McCann (replaced by Maura McCann), Victoria Mallet (1-2), Polly Moane (0-5), Cassie Moane (replaced by Peita McAllister), Caroline Kelly (0-7), Eimer Proctor (replace by Grainne Hughes), Clare Byrne (0-2). Subs not used: Cathy Short, Aislinn McCloskey, Nuala Doherty.
Belles in Championship Final 2008
Down Ladies Senior Championship Final Bredagh v Clonduff
5pm Sat 13 Sept Downpatrick
Bredagh Senior Ladies are bidding for championship glory next Saturday (13 September) as they take on reigning champions Clonduff at 5pm in Pairc Esler, Newry. The Belles overcame Annaclone in the first round with 11 points to spare, winning 5-14 to 3-9 in Castlewellan in June. Due to county action, the semi final was not played until last Sunday when a well-prepared Downpatrick side provided stern opposition for the south Belfast girls. Played in Carryduff, Bredagh survived an early onslaught to fight back and take the match 3-7 to 3-4.
The achievement in reaching the senior championship is all the more notable given the change in management this year. Paul Hickson (former Bredagh senior player) and Lorraine McCaffrey (lynchpin of the Bredagh forward line for a number of years) have combined their significant managerial experience of third level and county teams to provide the Bredagh side with the leadership and direction required to reach the Championship final.
Of course it isn’t just the management that deserves the credit for the performance – the team itself has been fully committed in all aspects of the game this year, from attendance at training sessions to personal work (and even a bit of psychology!) all while maintaining the necessary positive attitude throughout. The hard work done on pre-season fitness training is evident in all the Bredagh Belles’ games and their strong league performance is testament to their consistency.
Perhaps one of the most pleasing aspects of their achievement is that the Belles have found a balance between youth and experience. Club stalwarts who have been the backbone of the team since its foundation thirteen years ago such as Siobhan McCarney, Arlene McCloskey, Geraldine Grimley, Joanne Lavery, Jacqui Clarke, Eimer Proctor and Fionnula McAtamney have been joined by the new Bredagh generation who have grown up in the club. The development of players like Hannah Murray (team captain), Emma Mulhern, Jamie Willigan, Suzie Irwin, Lisa Kelly and the young Moane sisters, Polly and Cassie, has been vital in strengthening the Bredagh base. Coaches of all Bredagh age groups can claim a hand in this team due to the number of girls who have come through the Bredagh coaching system from underage level.
While Bredagh’s city club status has been challenging in that they have lost a number of players in recent years, it has also meant that some new talent has joined. Jenny Agnew, Caroline Kelly, Una McKay, Geraldine McCann and Geraldine Campbell are a few of those players who have chosen Bredagh as their new home in the past number of years. Their efforts and skills have benefited the club immensely, as they play with such team spirit that an outsider would assume the whole team had played together since underage.
Having reached their first final since 2005, the Bredagh Belles have been buoyed by the support from the entire Bredagh club. They are grateful for this support and would encourage all club members to consider making the trip to Newry to vocally cheer the girls on. If they can focus all their efforts, energy and skills, they will provide what promises to be a classic Down ladies final, the Bredagh pretenders challenging the reigning champions. Lets hope the cup journeys north to Belfast on Saturday.
Championship Semi Final Bredagh v Clonduff Whilst the Bredagh Intermediates narrowly lost out to Bright last weekend the Bredagh Seniors look to get their Championship campaign underway this weekend against the league leaders Clonduff.
Both teams, one having won the league last year and the other the championship, havent met at all this year and so it proves to be a great battle between the sides.
The match is at Saval on Saturday the 8th. Throw in is @ 6.30pm. There was great support for the intermediate girls at the weekend and it would be great to see as many Bredagh supporters at the game to cheer the Senior team on!
Ladies Refereeing Course A ladies referees course for all is being held on Wedensday 20th June in Castlewellen Gaelic Club @ 8pm sharp if anyone is interested.
Senior Ladies New Sponsor SPAR, has given local football team, Bredagh GAC, a foot up. SPAR has been announced as the official sponsor of the Senior Ladies Gaelic Football Team.

Bredagh 1-14 CastleWellan 2-8 This match was always going to be a tough encounter given the result of the same fixture last year. In 2006 the Bredagh Belles were 10 points down at half time only to come back and win the match by two points leaving Castlewellan devastated!
There was shuffling about with positions on Saturday which found Emma Mulhern in the half back line, Jacqui Clarke in midfield, Jenny Agnew in corner back and Una McKay in centre half forward which worked a treat! The belles got off to a good start with Paulie slotting over the first point with that trusty right foot. Castlewellan came back with a well taken fisted goal from an unmarked wing half forward.
Both teams played really well throughout the first 30, first time football was the winner for all which kept the game at high intensity. The experienced Jacqui Clarke and Kerrie O'Neill started their engines in fifth gear and never took the foot off the pedal and Jackie who said you were too old for midfield! :)
Great scores were taken from both the younger members of this senior team with Claire Byrne notching a point with a greath drive in from the left handside and Paulie Moane doing what she has done in most games this season and scoring another stunning point of her right boot!
The score line at half time showed the belles 2 points up!
The second half saw much of the same intensity and the Bredagh ladies took some magnificent scores from both left and right. Maeve, Grumley and Una showing why they were chosen for the half forward line all scoring great points and then later Una scored a cracker of a goal which she drove into the top corner of the Castlewellen net. This was just the lift the belles needed!
The defence held up well Emma Mulhern certainly found her form in the half back line stealing in every sense of the word a number of important balls from a stationary Castlewellan wing forward, then running the ball up the field to our waiting forwards who on most occasions finished the job. One of these moves started by Jennie Agnew down the right side of the pitch resulted in a fine point from midfielder Kerrie O'Neill who was then unlucky not to get her second point of the game when she saw her effort just slip wide of the far right post. The subs Maeliosa Hardy, Ciara Moane and Grainne Hughes that came on for Bredagh did very well to adjust to the pace of such a high intensity match and Ciara was very unlucky to see a goal chance blocked down by the Castlewellen keeper.
Castlewellan did come back with some great scores and a smashing goal which just slipped into the top left hand corner of the net to bring the sides closer again. It was a close encounter then with three minutes to go a Castlewellan player goes down injured and a check on the score shows it all level. This only fired the Belles up even more and out of the woodwork came some point saving blocks the pick of the bunch form Jackie Clarke!
The Bredagh Belles proved why they were league winners last season scoring 3 points in quick succession to seal for the second time in two years what can only be described as a very satisfying victory!
Some of the play on the field was outstanding, first time football that's what it's all about!

Fionula McAtamney, Lisa Kelly (replaced by Maeliosa Hardy), Siobhan McCarney, Jenny Agnew, Hannah Murray (replaced by Grainne Hughes), Geraldine Campbell, Emma Mulhern, Kerry O'Neill (0-1), Jackie Clarke, Maeve Gallagher (0-3), Una McKay (1-2), Geraldine Grumley (0-4), Claire Byrne (0-1) (replaced by Ciara Moane), Niamh Gallagher, Polly Moane (0-3)
Only Clonduff left to play in the first phase of this years league campaign and lets just hope that Bredagh can display such a great team performance that was witnessed on Saturday night and get a good home result!
Bredagh 2-8 Downpatrick 2-2 The Bredagh belles got off to slow start against Downpatrick on Saturday past. When you look at the first half of the game the result could have gone either way with the belles only recording 2 points after 30 minutes. It was a really wet evening meaning the handling and passing on occasion left a lot to be desired for both teams.
The Bredagh ladies defended well in the first half closing down the attack every time. Downpatrick only had a small number of scoring opportunities which were denied. Maeve Gallagher opened up the scoring for the Belles with a great point from 30 yards out. That was it for the next 15 minutes before Grimley put a sweet point over the bar with her favourite left foot...a real beauty!
Lisa Kelly & Maeliosa Hardy supported full back Siobhan McCarney perfectly in the corners; there to remove the ball safely out of defence on every Downpatrick attack. The half back line of Jacqui Clarke, Geraldine Campbell & Hannah Murray were strong throughout the entire game never giving the opposition a chance. Ciara Moane paired Jenny Agnew for the first 20 minutes of the game, both were immense they must have covered 10 miles between the pair of them! Cousin Polly Moane replaced Ciara and she too covered ground that most of us would drive in the car!
The score line at half time 0:2 to 0:0 favouring the Bredagh ladies.
The Belles got off to a good start in the second half with Claire Byrne putting over a point along with Lorraine McCaffery's cracker of a goal! Downpatrick then seemed to get a lease of life flying down only to be given a free when stopped in action by the half back. A high ball in dropped short from the posts into the hands of Siobhan, only to slip out and drop to the ground, Downpatrick midfielder seized the opportunity and booted it to the back of the net! Within a few minutes Maeve & Grimley replied with well taken points. Lorraine also seized the moment with another great goal only to be denied for a square ball!
Downpatrick on the attack again this time their midfielder came steam rolling down the field, Siobhan McCarney stood her ground only to be sent flying 2 foot off the ground by what could only be described as blatant charging but alas the game went on and saw another goal in the back of the net for Downpatrick.
Less than a minute later Lorraine McCaffery did what was just and punched a perfect third to the back of the net this time the goal stood and the belles shouted with glee! The next few minutes saw both sides score a further 2 points each it became quite and intense affair. With only five minutes left on the clock belles showed the opposition who was boss with Polly and Geraldine Campbell (coming from centreback) putting two more balls between the posts to seal the 6 point victory!!
Some of the play on the field was brilliant, a real team performance to say the least. It just shows what a few defeats can do for team morale!

Bredagh 3-11 Glenn 3-11 Bredagh Ladies had a Challenge Game against Derry's Glen in Cherryvale on Thursday the 3rd May.
A great game of football with the final result a draw 3:11 a piece!
Saval v Bredagh - Monday 30th April 2007
Result 3-10 to 2-13 - Draw
The Bredagh belles got a point on the board after a long ‘hot’ battle with their Newry opponents in Saval last evening. In warm evening temperatures the ladies finally seemed to be getting it together with a stronger team performance.
Saval got the first score on the board (A smashing goal) when the Saval full forward was passed a ball over the head of the full back Siobhán McCarney when drawn out by an oncoming player. Goal keeper Ciara Gallagher didn’t stand a chance…and on the kick out Ciara who has been plagued with calf injuries, stuck the ball only to pull her calf again!! (Thankfully not as bad as past injuries …so roll on a speedy recovery Ciara!). Maeliosa Hardy stepped up to the plate in nets and replaced Ciara for the rest of the game.
The Belles first score on the board came from centre half back Una McKay who was making her début for the team…from that on it was a pretty even affair on the first half, each team matching the other almost score for score. Half time came and the scores were level.
One forward substitution was made on the side of the belles and the second half began. Again scores from both were pretty evenly matched throughout. By half way through the second half most of the forward line for Bredagh had registered on the score sheet.
With the belles 3 points down with 2 minutes to go it seemed that they were heading for another defeat….. then somehow Polly Moane caught a great ball and buried it in the back of the net…how she squeezed it past the 10 people on the line is beyond all of us but…it was there and that’s all that mattered! 20 seconds later the final whistle blew…a draw the score, probably the right result at the end of a hard fought very warm battle!
Ciara Gallagher (Replaced by Maeliosa Hardy), Lisa Kelly, Siobhán McCarney, Grainne Hughes (Replaced by Claire Byrne), Hannah Murray, Una McKay, Jackie Clarke, Jenny Agnew, Geraldine Campbell, Emma Mulhern, Maeve Gallagher, Polly Moane, Geraldine Grimley, Niamh Gallagher (Replaced by Joanne Lavery), Kerry O’Neill.

Bredagh v Annaclone 21st April 2007 Result Annaclone 4-14 Bredagh 2-10
The Bredagh belles got off to great start steam rolling the Annaclone defence! 8 – 3 up after 15 minutes spectators thought it was a done deal for the home side. But the luck of the gods wasn’t with the Bredagh belles; the second quarter saw the Annaclone ladies tighten their belts and go for glory. With Annaclone changing their tactics, it transformed the game completely. The visitors had their shooting down to perfection missing only 5 points throughout the 60mins and with a number of unstoppable goals, success wasn’t to be for the Bredagh belles. The match was a great spectacle to watch with some of the passages of play outstanding but unfortunately the belles point taking left a lot to be desired….the girls will tell you that themselves...the scores went every road and any road but between the posts!!
A few more lessons learnt after another defeat….but spirits are high and the belles will be out next week to revert to their winning ways that’s for sure!

Bredagh 3–8 Castlewellan 0–7 League, Thursday August 3rd
UNCATCHABLE! Bredagh Belles win Senior League
Overcoming Obstacles
Half-way through the first half, Bredagh lost Ulster star Arlene McCloskey with a tightened hamstring. Half-time, and their redoubtable full-back Siobhan McCarney limped off with an apparent achilles injury. Midway through the second half they ‘mislaid’ Down player Geraldine Campbell for a very venial sin. A couple of years ago these would have been crippling blows, but such is the strength in depth of the squad that they soldiered on to a victory that means that, with two games still to go, they cannot now be caught and become League champions. This strength in depth arises from the continuing great form of the senior players, the introduction of players on transfers and the fruits of years of work with underage and development teams.
Hardened Criminals!
Joanne Lavery, Geraldine Grimley, Cera McArdle, Maura McArdle and Cathy Gallagher are, by now, ‘hardened criminals’ of the football world. When Joanne went through early on, the Castlewellan ‘keeper made a save she could hardly expect to repeat; and when Joanne cut in again from the same angle a few minutes later there was to be no repetition: the ball was in the net and Bredagh were on their way. Geraldine showed all the qualities that made her such a significant player in Armagh’s All Ireland run last year and that left foot should some day be preserved in aspic. It doesn’t make any difference to Maura who she’s marking, she just gets out in front, gets the ball and takes no nonsense from anyone, while Cera works unobtrusively to ensure that her forward remains as idle as possible. When the ball drops in high in the goalmouth, Cathy Gallagher’s renowned ability in the air gives great confidence, and her kick-out have the accuracy of a forward’s pass. This core of experience is supplemented by other players reaching the heights of their powers.
Kerrie O'Neill
Kerrie has matured brilliantly over the years; her ability in the air and her vision in parting with the ball were so central to Bredagh’s dominance of midfield even when Arlene had gone. Catherine McGourty likewise took ball from everywhere. Maeve Gallagher and Nialmh Gallagher both have great natural skills and have found their feet in the team really well. Making her debut at left full back after a transfer saga, Jenny Agnew was brilliant, fast in the tackle, brave in pursuit of possession and not afraid to venture upfield. It was as if she had been there for ages. Catherine McAteer was another great acquisition from St Gall’s an ideally strong target woman up front to supplement the delicate skills of Joanne.
Lisa Kelly
And coming through from the intermediate team is another raft of talent. Lisa Kelly defended as well here as she did in any intermediate or junior match, her interceptions and the simplicity of her passing are exemplary in any grade. Emma Mulnern’s progress has been meteoric from juvenile to senior county panel, and she works for it. Her tracking back was exemplary, her runs into space were often brilliant, not always spotted by her team-mates, but that will come with time. Joanne Corrigan, also coming through from the intermediate team covered very well; she’s very hard to pass.
More to Come
And the bench is bristling with talent coming through: Grainne Hughes and Polly Moane who have dominated in the intermediate grade, Amy Cunningham, Suzy Irwin, Jamie Willighan, champing at the bit to be given their chance. And absent with the Armagh set-up were Jacqui Clarke, Fionnula McAtamney and Lorraine McCaffrey. Add in Nel O’Neill and Ciara Gallagher and the basis for this great victory is obvious – competition for places in all areas.
The Double?
The League is won. But there are, as was said recently in a post-match mixed metaphor of frightening implications, bigger fish on the horizon – presumably on bicycles! The Championship, to continue the metaphor, is another kettle of fish in a barrel to be shot. But with the proven strength in depth of the squad, the double is no longer an idle dream. Bredagh have done the double before, and a lot of hearts among the senior players are deeply set on a repeat. Can they do it again? Hope.
A BIG THANKS from the players to the manager and extended management team - Stephen Molloy, Paul O'Reilly, Brendan O'Connell and Patrick Finnegan. Their training and direction has been second to none throughout the season.

Down Trio
Three Bredagh players were in the Down Senior Ladies squad for their Ulster Championship game with Monaghan at Clones. Kerrie O'Neill is on the far left of the back row, Geraldine Campbell is third from the left and Emma Mulhearn is second from the right at the very front.
Downpatrick 3-6 Bredagh 2-10 League, Saturday July 1st - Bredagh will win the Co Down League title for the first time in four years if they win their next game at home to Castlewellan. The Belles took a big step towards the title when they won at Downpatrick, though they just about scraped home. Their seventh win in-a-row was by just one point, 2-10 to 3-6, and it was secured by a Geraldine Grimley point which clipped the post and just about rolled over the crossbar.
Bredagh 6-26 Loughinisland 0-3 League, Saturday June 24th - Win Number Six.
Pictures v Bryansford
Bredagh 2-14 Bryansford 2-7 League, Thursday, June 8th – win number five out of five, Bredagh clear at the top of the table. Anything the senior men can do...
Unlike the previous game, Bredagh came out of the blocks fast to score four points without reply. Geraldine Grimley’s long range effort was the pick of the scores. Bryansford reduced the deficit by pointing from a free. Bredagh totally dominated the game for the next fifteen minutes and scored 1-4 without reply. The goal came from the boot of Kerrie O’Neill who drove the ball into the Bryanford penalty area which deceived their keeper and found its way into the back of the net. Bredagh were coasting to victory with a ten-point advantage and totally dominating the game, however Bryansford scored 2-2 in the final ten minutes to reduce the half time lead to just two points. Fionnuala McAtamney was very unlucky with the first goal as she made a phenomenal save only to see the rebound go to a Bryansford forward who thundered her effort into the back of the net. The second goal was very disappointing from a Bredagh point of view as the ball should have been cleared, Bryansford struck a high looping ball into the Bredagh penalty area which deceived everyone and somehow found its way to the back of the net. Half-time: Bredagh 1-8 Bryansford 2-3. Bredagh took the game by the scruff of the neck and pointed from their first attack, captain Arlene McCloskey hit a fantastic long range point to signal Bredagh’s intentions. Bredagh continued to dominate and scored two more excellent points from Catherine McAteer before Bryansford got out of the blocks. Bredagh were playing some excellent football and looked much more confident. Bryansford pointed twice (1 free) before another Bredagh period of dominance resulted in another three points for the Bredagh Belles. Bryansford once again pointed twice (1 free) before the move of the match resulted in a well deserved Bredagh goal which was expertly executed by Emma Mulhern. Joanne Lavery’s excellent 25-yard crossfield ball was perfectly directed into the path of Emma Mulhern who beat her defender and coolly slotted the ball past the helpless Bryansford keeper. The goal further extended the Bredagh lead to seven points and ensured another victory. The Belles are League leaders after the completion of the first phase and who would bet against them on this form.
Squad & Scorers: Fionnuala McAtamney, Lisa Kelly, Siobhan McCarney, Hannah Murray, Grainne Hughes, Maura McArdle, Geraldine Campbell, Arlene McCloskey 0-1 (captain), Catherine McGourty, Geraldine Grimley 0-4, Maeve Gallagher 0-3, Emma Mulhern 1-0, Catherine McAteer 0-4, Kerrie O’Neill 1-0, Joanne Lavery 0-2, Cera McArdle, Cathy Gallagher, Lorraine McCaffrey, Polly Moane, Jamie Willighan, Nel O’Neill.
Castlewellan 2-6 Bredagh 2-8 League, Saturday June 3rd - win number four in-a-row was a hard-earned and narrow away victory, the toughest game of the season so far. An important test, passed.
A fantastic second-half performance ensured this victory to secure Bredagh's position as league leaders. They didn’t perform in the first half and finished the half with a ten-point deficit - Castlewellan 2-6 Bredagh 0-2. However an amazing fightback secured the points. Scores came from Maeve Gallagher, Joanne Lavery and Geraldine Grimley, to name but a few. The work ethic and direction that was very much missing in the first half was very much evident throughout the Bredagh team in the second half. The tenacious tackling and defending was outstanding and kept the Castlewellan team scoreless in the entire half. The midfield was excellent, driving the team forward to firstly reduce the ten-point deficit and then to take the lead. The forwards didn’t function as a unit in the first half but turned it around and destroyed the Castlewellan back line, scoring 2-6 without reply. Bredagh showed great character and resolve to achieve this victory and will take some stopping as they aim to secure their second ever League title.
Squad & Scorers: Fionnuala McAtamney, Jamie Willighan, Siobhan McCarney, Lisa Kelly, Grainne Hughes, Maura McArdle, Geraldine Campbell, Cera McArdle 0-1, Arlene McCloskey (captain), Geraldine Grimley 0-3, Maeve Gallagher 0-2, Emma Mulhern, Catherine McAteer, Polly Moane, Cathy Gallagher, Joanne Lavery 2-1, Kerrie O’Neill 0-1, Joanne Corrigan, Lorraine McCaffrey.
Bredagh 1-17 Clonduff 1-4 League, Thursday May 25th - Clonduff were boosted by the recent transfers of the Downey sisters from Iveagh Bosco and were something of an unknown quantity though much-respected as they beat last year's champions Castlewellan in their last game. Bredagh began sprightly and gave Clonduff problems with a lively forward unit. Niamh Gallagher opened proceedings with a point from the 30m line wide on the right. Not to be outdone, Geraldine Grimley responded to the competition by scoring two points with her trusty left boot (Wishie must surely have polished those boots at the weekend!).
TERRY THE HAT - Clonduff won the ball from the kickout and a strong un downfield from Michaela Downey resulted in their first score. Seconds later a rocket shot from Maeve Gallagher looked like a certain goal - the ball seemed to hit the roof of the net so fast it rebounded out and must have hit every piece of woodwork before being finally palmed out by the Clonduff keeper. Terry 'The Hat' must have been sleeping because there wasn’t a sign of the green flag.
EMMA THE STAR - Joanne Lavery then finished a well-worked point which started with excellent defensive play by Geraldine Campbell. Michalea Downey kept Clonduff in the game with a free. Midfielder Catherine McGourty responded with another Bredagh point and then Michaela Downey caught the Bredagh defence on the hoof and steamrollered through on one of her trademark runs downfield and put the ball in the back of the net. Clonduff were back in the game but Bredagh hi tback with points from Gallagher Junior, Joanne Lavery and Grimley. Cometh the hour, cometh the lady – young Emma Mulhern received a long pass after strong work by the Bredagh half backs and in the blink of an eye the ball was in the back of the Clonduff net to make 1-8 to 1-4 at half-time.
ATTACKING DEFENDERS - a fluent Bredagh team continued where they had left off and settled down to the task at hand. Kerri O’Neill, Cera McArdle, Maura McArdle and Geraldine Campbell were very quick to intercept any dangerous attacking play by Clonduff. Defence turned to attack with Kerri feeding off midfielders Arlene McCloskey and Catherine McGourty to set up numerous scoring opportunities. The introduction of Grainne Hughes to curtail a roaming full-forward strengthened Bredagh's ability to build from the back. Some text book passing resulted in two points each by Joanne, Emma Mulhern and the reliable Grimley. Playmaker Maeve Gallagher also turned scorer from a free.
BLANKED OUT - Subs Polly Moane, Lorraine McCaffrey and Jamie Willigan all came on and in a final flurry from Clonduff the Bredagh full-back line showed what they are made of. A few goalmouth scrambles were cleared with confidence by keeper Fionnuala McAtamney, assisted by Lisa Kelly and Siobhan McCarney. Clonduff were in fact held scoreless in the second half.
Team & Scorers: Fionnuala McAtamney, Lisa Kelly, Siobhan McCarney, Nel O’Neill, Geraldine Campbell, Cera McArdle, Maura McArdle, Arlene McCloskey, Catherine McGourty 0-1, Emma Mulhern 1-2, Maeve Gallagher 0-1, Niamh Gallagher 0-3, Geraldine Grimley 0-6, Joanne Lavery 0-4, Kerri O’Neill. Subs: Grainne Hughes for Nel O’Neill, Polly Moane for Emma Mulhern, Jamie Willigan for Siobhan McCarney, Lorraine McCaffrey for Maeve Gallagher.
NEXT -away to Castlewellan. An eagerly-awaited contest is in store.
Bredagh 3-16 Downpatrick 2-7 League, Saturday May 20th - Another impressive victory - Fionnualla McAtamney once again was excellent in goal and made a number of fine saves in her usual dramatic fashion. The defence were impressive throughout - Hannah Murray and Lisa Kelly consolidated their places in corner back with another mature performance from the young Bredagh duo. Siobhan McCarney gave her usual dominant performance at full-back. The half back line of Maura McArdle, Cera McArdle and Geraldine Campbell proved to be very difficult to penetrate - they broke up many Downpatrick attacks to set up attack for their own team that resulted in many Bredagh scores. Arlene McCloskey and Catherine McGourty gave a master class performance at midfield and totally dominated this area. Both scored spectacular points to contribute to the Bredagh victory. Niamh Gallagher replaced Arlene McCloskey at half time so that Arlene could talk the spectators through her fantastic point. Niamh Gallagher slotted into the midfield berth and played a vital role in the Bredagh victory in the second half. Kerrie O'Neill was once again at her usual best in her role as third midfielder, she swept up everything that came into her path and began many Bredagh attacks.
The forward line were on fine form with all forwards including substitute Polly Moane on the scoresheet. Bredagh had eight scorers in all but the most impressive score was undoubtedly Geraldine Grimley's goal (so she says). It was an excellent strike following a brilliant Bredagh move that began in the full back line. The half forward line of Maebh Gallagher (0-3), Geraldine Grimley (1-1) and Emma Mulhern (1-0) proved to be too hot to handle as they terrorised the Downpatrick defence and were the creators of many scores for their team mates. The full forward line of Joanne Lavery (0-4) and Catherine McAteer (1-5) totally destroyed the Downpatrick full back line, they simply had no answer for the experienced (older) duo. Catherine McAteer's proved to be an excellent target woman but then again she couldn't fail to be missed in those red shorts (get Bredagh shorts).
The substitutes also played their part, Polly Moane came off the bench and scored an excellent point with her first touch of the game. Louise
Fitzpatrick slotted into defence and held her own. The introduction of
Ciara Gallagher into the team created history as all three Gallagher sisters finally played in the same team. Lorraine McCaffrey's introduction into
the forward line added to the strength of the team. Downpatrick made a last ditch attempt by scoring two goals in the last few moments but the Bredagh belles proved to strong in the end. Another fine performance for the senior ladies but there are tougher games ahead.
Squad: Fionnualla McAtamney, Lisa Kelly, Siobhan McCarney, Hannah Murray, Maura McArdle, Cera McArdle, Geraldine Campbell, Arlene McCloskey (captain), Catherine McGourty, Emma Mulhern, Maeve Gallagher, Geraldine Grimley, Joanne Lavery, Catherine McAteer, Kerrie O'Neill. Subs: Niamh Gallagher for Arlene McCloskey, Polly Moane for Joanne Lavery, Ciara Gallagher for Hannah Murray, Lorraine McCaffrey for Geraldine Grimley, Louise Fiztpatrick for Maura McArdle and Nel O'Neill.
Loughinisland 1-0 Bredagh 6-18 League, Saturday May 13th -the ladies kicked off their season with a tremendous win. A positive, total team performance was the secret ingredient.

SOLID DEFENCE - the defence were solid throughout. Hannah Murray made her debut at right corner back and what a debut it was. Fearless throughout, Hannah looked as if she had been there in a past life! Lisa Kelly replicated her performance in the other corner, hassling the whole time. Siobhan McCarney made a return to the number 3 position after being out nearly a year to the day with that dreadful break. Siobhan’s safe hands cleared up any ball that attempted to cross the 21! In the half back line Cera & Maura returned to their familiar positions and were joined by Geraldine Campbell who made her debut for the Bredagh Belles from South Down’s Burren! The half back line did all that was asked of them, a super performance, a step ahead every time.
MIDFIELD - in midfield, stalwart Arlene McCloskey was joined by another debutant Catherine McGourty. It was a match made in heaven. Both girls attacked, defended and supported the rest of the team at every opportunity.
FORWARDS - in the forwards... well I'm just glad that I am a defender right now because the competition for places is fierce! Those lucky to be chosen where 'wee Emma' Mulhern, the fourth debutant Maeve Gallagher and old faithful left footer Geraldine Grimley. All three were brilliant throughout - soloing, passing, looking to see what’s on and 99 per cent of the time they chose the right option. Last but by no means least the full forwards - Catherine McAteer on her debut from St Galls, old favourite Joanne Lavery and Co Down's (even though an Antrim woman through and through) Kerry O’Neill all stepped up to be named 13, 14 & 15. Kerry was given a free run of the pitch, spending most of the game around the middle of the field in a position totally suited to her. Joanne and Catherine stormed through the defence, scoring at every opportunity that was opened up to them.
SUMMARY - although a number of people got their name on the scoreboard it wouldn’t be right to highlight any one individual. This was a magnificent team effort by all involved and when Nell & Niamh joined the ranks in the second half they complimented a showpiece performance. Loughisland could only look on in disbelief at the spectacle they had witnessed. The final whistle blew and it was off to Cherryvale to support the other half.
