Girls' Football Mystery Tour All was revealed on Saturday 22nd August when the Bredagh U-8, U-10 and U-12 girls footballers headed off on their Mystery Tour. The girls enjoyed a beautiful September day and headed off from Cherryvale on the bus.
First stop was the Moneyglass club in Antrim for some friendly matches for the U-8, U-10 and U-12 matches. The girls really enjoyed the matches. They played with great skill and teamwork and fought hard for every ball. Moneyglass were very welcoming and generously provided drinks, sandwiches and treats for the Bredagh visitors. Thanks to Moneyglass for their great hospitality.
The girls then headed off to Carnfunnock Country Park on the Antrim coast where they spent the rest of the day. Activities started with a visit to the Maze where by good luck the same number left the maze as had entered it. Highlight of the day was the X-Factor competition at the Giant Bird tables where the girls took it in turns to display their singing and dancing talents. The girls then tucked into their barbeque before heading to the activity centre to try out the Adventure Playground and Outdoor Chess. It was time to head home, watching Scooby Doo on the bus for the second showing of the day, back to Cherryvale and the waiting parents. A great day out was had by all. Thanks to the coaches and helpers - Laura Willighan, John McGale, Colm Murray, Cera McArdle, Duana McArdle.

U 12 Girls Football Training recommences this Saturday 11th August from 10 to 11.30am at Cherryvale
Bredagh 3-1 Burren 2-8 In a beautiful setting in the heart of the Mournes, Bredagh girls took on the might of a strong and skillful Burren side, who incidentally, where well represented in the Senior County Team playing a few miles down the road!
Bredagh girls were warned beforehand of the potential physicality of the Burren outfit, but all during the first half the South Belfast team were easily knocked off the ball or surrended possession in the tight exchanges.
Olivia Boyle was the Goalkeeper on the day for the first half, a key position given the fact that Burren hit 21 goals against Downpatrick, Bredagh needed solidity and security between the posts and Olivia did not disappoint. Burren enjoyed the favour of a strong breeze in the first half and regularly knocked over competent scores.
Molly McMullan and Nuala Carvill worked tirelessly at half back against very determined opposition, they are consistently industrious and energetic. Dearbhla McDonnell and Charlotte McKey covered acres of territory at full back while Eimar Kelly performed heroically at Centre half back. During a difficult first period, Aisling McFarland stood out as a bulwark in defence and as an inspiration to the team and well deserved her “Girl of the Match” accolade.
The Bredagh midfield of Ella Durkan, Eadaoin Ni Chiarrain and Ellen McGourty saw much of the battle and the ball! Indeed between them Ella and Eadaoin scored the majority of Bredagh’s tally and with Eadaoin being intensely marked, Ella found much freedom as a result. Bredagh can learn to exploit this space in future matches and if confidence emerges in the more natural ball-carriers, scoring opportunities will surely follow.
Eadaoin captained the side for the first time and crowned a powerful 40 metre solo run with a thunderous shot which almost burst the net!
Bredagh’s half forward line of Fiona White, Bria Kane and Joni Gallagher were determined in their approach play. Fiona particularly impressed, picking up lose ball, passing defenders and carrying the ball into threatening positions. Emma Duffy was superb in finding lucrative positions in front of goal but was never rewarded with an accurate final pass. Hannah Scullion bravely and persistently ran at the Burren defensive line and narrowly missed the posts on several occasions.
At the break, Bredagh trailed by six points.
A more aggressive and combative team emerged in the second half and greater use made of possession. The gradual introduction of Catherine Colgan, Emma Bogues and Lucy Mullan raised the tempo considerably. Eimar Downey took up her full forward position and with the wind, Bredagh looked a lot more threatening. Several last gasp blocks by the Burren girls denied certain goals and it is a game that on reflection, Bredagh might have won. Decision-making and speed of execution in front of goal will be worked on in training!
Ellen McVeigh, Aoife Scott, Megan Coll and Anna Hollywood were all called from the bench and these girls helped to reinforce the Bredagh drive in the second period. In a short Development match, Bredagh triumphed 0-2 to 0-1 demonstrating great spirit and determination which gives promise for the next match against Killcoo on Sunday 27 May at Cherryvale.
Bredagh 9-8 Downpatrick 0-1 On a cloudy rain-drenched evening a small squad was expected to muster on a bleak Wednesday night. Indeed several parents fully expected the match to be postponed because of the atrocious weather conditions. But the first away fixture against Downpatrick was confirmed and despite the weather and several key players in Edinburgh, twenty two girls turned out! This young U12 Bredagh Squad is no fair weather team!
Great credit must go to the committed parents who offered lifts in such foul conditions with little fore warning. Their help is sincerely appreciated.
Downpatrick are a very hospitable club with excellent facilities. This year, while low in numbers they are a bigger and more physical side than Bredagh and the Belfast team did well to survive a few early scares as Downpatrick penetrated through the middle of the defence.
The powerful and committed Bredagh half back line of Molly McMullan, Olivia Boyle and Nuala Carvill soon mastered the wet, slippery conditions and gave good service to the dynamic and creative midfield trio of Ellen McGourty, Eadoin Ni Chiarrain and Ella Durkan.
Bredagh scores came thick and fast, Fiona White's astute ball-carrying earned her a goal and a point and balls were constantly fed through to Emma Duffy who is deadly accurate close in or from distance. Eimar Downey claimed a remarkable hatrick of points from close range in the first half. Bredagh became encamped in the opposition half and posted 6 goals and 6 points to Downpatrick's solitary point by the interval.
Joni Gallagher, who was carrying a slight achilles injury played extremely well in goals, her kick outs to unmarked Bredagh half backs and midfielders in the left channel were exemplory. Niamh McGuire had an outstanding game at corner back alongside the dominant Aisling McFarland and the tenacious and hard-working duo of Charlotte McKey and Laura McCartney
Bredagh played some lovely flowing football throughout the match, Eadoin Ni Chiarrain particularly enjoying her free role on the pitch.
The tempo and spirit of the team performance was not unduly disrupted by eight quickly sequenced sustitutions early in the second period, this allowed every player to get into the action, gain match experience and get thoroughly soaked!
Eva Hinds slotted into a defensive midfield role and enjoyed considerable success in stealing balls and disrupting Downpatrick's momentum. Aoife Scott at full forward almost crowned her debut in that position with a goal but her shot was straight at the goalkeeper. Shauna Waterson was a surprise package, despite her diminutive size she created havoc in the Downpatrick defence. The determined and fast improving Sile Martin helped Bredagh keep a clean sheet in the second half, ably assisted by Naomi Moreland, Lucy Mullan, Roisin Murray and and the brave Aoife Foster. These girls showed tremendous spirit which serve them well in future competitive matches.
The ever constant spine of Aisling, Olivia, Eadoin and Fiona maintained the level of performance in spite of the flow of changes from the sidelines.
Bredagh eventually ran out comfortable winners and the squad can look forward to their next fixture away to Burren on Sunday.

Bredagh 3-7 v Bryansford 5-9 This was the first competitive fixture for the newly formed squad this year, with many of the 20 strong squad playing together for the first time. With several key players missing the team performed well against a well-drilled and combative Bryansford side.
In the first half Bredagh started strongly with midfield and half forwards carrying the ball and dominating possession for long periods while the defence proved to be difficult to score against. Catherine Colgan was dominating under the high ball at centre full back, ably assisted by Dearbhla McDonnell and Lucy Mullan, while the half back line of Aoife Foster, the powerful Aisling McFarland and the tenacious Nuala Carvill were very effective.
Bredagh’s scores came from the ball-carrier Fiona White, Hannah Scullion and Emma Duffy. Midfielders Ellen McGourty and Joni Gallagher worked tirelessly throughout, often against superior numbers. Bria Kane had an impressive game at left corner forward and her comrades Emma Bogues and Roisin Murray played well at the full forward line.
Charlotte McKey the diminutive but feisty goalkeeper kept Bryansford at bay during the first half, but a number of gifted scores from Bredagh play gave the game to the visitors in the second half. Substitutes Naomi Moreland, Megan Coll, Sile Martin, Eimar Downey and Eva Hinds contributed well and Bredagh could have made the result tighter if the final pass or opportunity was converted. It was a much tighter game than the score line suggests.
This was an encouraging start for the U 12 Ladies Squad, it has established a benchmark from which to improve, given vital insight into players and prospective positions and provided a positive platform for the season to come.
Last Day
Funderland!
St Paul's Ulster U-12 Girls Football Tournament, Saturday October 9th - Bredagh girls had an enjoyable outing at Boucher Road, with the backdrop of Funderland. Despite missing Sarah McCoy, Lucy Russell, Gemma Mullan, Julia Hinds, Eimear Kane and Aileen Murphy, the girls put in a good effort in windy conditions.
The first game was against Antrim champions St Paul's but Bredagh upset the formbook with a great first half. A goal from Eadaoin Ni Chiarrain and a point from Aine O'Rourke left Bredagh ahead by a goal at the interval. However, lack of concentration let the hosts back into the game. Alice McConville finished the move of the day with a great point but it was not enough to prevent defeat.
The second game was against South Down champions Bosco, and again the team played well in the first half, limiting the half-time deficit to four points. Two quick goals from Alice and Rachel Goldsmith put Bredagh ahead but the absence of a regular goalkeeper and some injuries saw the girls lose out by a goal.
The third and final game was against Armagh champions Clann Eireann but this proved a bridge too far and the Lurgan girls won well. All 19 girls never stopped trying and this tournament again showed what we could achieve if we could field a full-strength team - something that, amazingly, we have not managed once this season. Thanks to Mairtin MacCarrain, Anna McAlinney and Damien Canavan for transport and support.

Dublin Trip Bredagh U-12 girls had an excellent win in Dublin last Sunday before attending the All Ireland Ladies finals in Croke Park. Castleknock fielded a physically strong team but the Belfast girls put on a powerful display with the only disappointment being the broken wrist suffered by Julia Hinds in making a super block. Eadaoin Ni Chiarrain opened the scoring and there was strong defending by Aine Canavan and Shauna Leitch. More scores from Rachel Goldsmith and Eadoain kept Bredagh ahead by a point at half-time. After the break, Bredagh had their best passage of play and Sarah McCoy finished off the move of the match, involving Lucy Doran, Mary Carson and Alice McConville. Rachel scored a fine goal before Clare Byrne continued her recent good form with the last point.
In the Development game Bredagh fielded an entirely fresh 15 and competed strongly with Castleknock, who retained their key players from the first match. Strong performances came from Eimear Kane, Laura McAllister, Aideen Murphy and Lucy Mullan.
The U-14s also had a good win and the Bredagh group of 75 went on to set aside traditional rivalries and support Armagh whose Bredagh representation brought glory to the club – Fionnuala McAtamney was superb and Jacqui, Lorraine and Geraldine all did a great job on the sideline.
Get well soon to Julia – there is no training this Saturday as we have been invited to the St Paul's tournament and we will be in touch with the girls required.
Challenge Game Challenge game, Sunday September 10th - St Brigid's boys 7-7 Bredagh girls 3-4. A unique match took place at the YMCA when Bredagh girls took on a St Brigids boys select. We could suggest that this was part of a master plan to examine gender differences in Gaelic games at the age of 12 but in reality it was about a shocking bit of communication between Doran and Cullen. Setting that aside, it was an excellent game on a massive pitch and the girls showed they are a match for anyone with a courageous performance despite the absence of key players who had gone to the camogie final. St Brigid's had some talented players and took advantage of the high crossbar to rattle in two early goals. However Bredagh settled well and a point from Eadaoin Ni Chiarrain was followed by an good goal from Emma Duffy. Determination from Lucy Doran and Julia Hinds showed the Malone lads that the girls meant business and Aoife Sheridan scored an excellent goal after a five-girl move. Two majors and a minor score from the home side left it 4-1 to 2-1 at half-time. Goalkeeper Rachel Goldsmith joined the midfield for the second half and added strength to a sector where the effects of a sleep-over were being felt by some girls! St Brigids opened up a significant lead, despite some excellent goalkeeping from Laura McAllister, but the visitors never gave up. Using all 24 players and building on fine play from Alice Mc Conville and Clare Mc Veigh, points from Rachel Goldsmith (2) and Aoife Sheridan kept the score respectable and a last minute penalty earned by the courage of Fiona White, returning after a broken collar-bone, was converted by Eadaoin to leave the final score St Brigids 7-7 Bredagh 3-4. Thanks to St Brigid's and referee Enda Cullen for an enjoyable game - there will be pictures in this week's South Belfast News. Training at Cherryvale at 10am on Saturday. Paddy and Brendan Downey are planning a trip to the Ladies All-Ireland on 1st October so keep that date free.
Castlewellan 2-4 Bredagh 5-6 League, Monday July 3rd - Bredagh qualified for the Down Semi-final with a convincing win at St Malachy's Park on a beautiful Monday evening in Castlewellan. The Belfast girls started well and goal machine Eadaoin Ni Chiarrain recorded her usual 3-1 in the first half. The other points came from Julia Hinds and Sarah McCoy. The home side responded in the second half with two fine goals and applied pressure, but the defence, with Alice McConville and Gemma Mullan outstanding, held firm. Captain Rachel Goldsmith and Sarah recorded points but the diminutive Eadaoin slotted in another 2-1 to leave the visitors ahead by 11 points at the end of an enjoyable game.
Development Game - Bredagh showed their strength with an emphatic 4-5 to 0-2 victory. Some defenders showed their shooting prowess with Meabh Colton getting a goal, Lucy Doran recording two points, Emma Duffy two fine goals, Emma Bogues got her rewards with two great points, Hannah Scullion a goal and Rachel a point.
NEXT - the next training will be on Saturday August 5th at 10am.
GET WELL SOON FIONA - the team dedicated the win to Fiona White, who broke her collar bone against Saul on Sunday, and the girls delivered a card and chocolates with news of the victory to a delighted Fiona on the way home.
THANKS - Joe, Paddy, Paul and Ciara would like to thank Arlene McCloskey who did a fine job as referee on Sunday and all the parents who provided lifts to Bright and Castlewellan. The proprietors of Brennans Ice Cream shop would also like to record their appreciation of your generosity.
THANK YOU DOCTOR DOWNEY - for taking care of Fiona when she got injured and for helping out on other occasions.
Bredagh 10-5 Saul 1-1 League, Sunday July 2nd - Bredagh had a fine win over Saul when the only blemish was an injury to star forward Fiona White, who had scored 1-1, following an accidental collision in the first half - we hope you get well soon Fiona. The first half saw Bredagh move ahead based on a powerful midfield of Rachel Goldsmith (0-2) and Sara McCoy. Eadaoin Ni Chiarrain weighed in with an amazing six-goal haul in just fifteen minutes but the best score of the half came from Emma Duffy who chipped the goalie from thirty yards. In the second half some girls really rose to the occasion - Aisling Boyd scored 1-1, Julia Hinds got a good point as a reward for all her hard work, Shauna Leitch was commanding at full-back, Emma Bogues never stopped running and Orlaith Downey played a 'McGeeney' moping up role as a third midfielder. Overall an excellent performance from a team missing several players who were recovering from the Ceili Mor in Rann na Feirste the previous night.
Bright 0-1 Bredagh 6-2 League, Thursday June 29th - this was a convincing win despite the absence of six first-team regulars who are at Irish College in Donegal. This allowed other girls to show their worth and some displays were top drawer. Playing with the wind, Eadaoin Ni Chiarrain ran amok and scored 3-1 in the first 15 minutes. A fine catch and point from Hannah Scullion was followed by a goal from industrious midfielder Sarah McCoy to leave the visitors ahead by 14 points at the break. The second half was more even and Bright scored a fine point followed by an excellent save from Eimear Kane. Eadaoin scored another goal and Emma Duffy took a pass from Lucy Mullan to hit the net and record a second away win for the Belfast girls.
Development Game -Bredagh took the honours by 3-2 to 0-0. Gemma Mullan, Aideen Murphy and Fiona White recorded major scores while defenders Orlaith Downey and Julia Hinds put over good points. All twenty players had at least 20 minutes and on the way home chocolate sales in Crossgar hit new highs.
Carryduff Tournament
Saturday, June 17th - Bredagh topped their Group consisting of five other teams. Then in the Semi-finals they had a comfortable victory over Bryansford by 3-3 to 0-1. The Final was an absolute thriller and not for the faint-hearted. Carryduff took what appeared to be unassailable lead by scoring 3-4 to 1-1 in the first-half, but Bredagh raised their game and with three goals from Eadaoin Ní Chiarrain they almost turned it round and just lost by 3-5 to 4-1. Once again the girls did their club, their coaches, their parents and most importantly themselves proud as they bravely sought to defend their title at Carryduff.

This year Bredagh were invited to field two teams, such is the strength in numbers of the South Belfast club, which gave many of the younger squad members a welcome chance of some highly competitive football in this well-organised tournament. Whilst it would be unfair to single out any of the girls, such was the commitment of everyone who played, there were some tremendous scores from throughout the forward line, some great individual scores and sterling work in defence. Unfortunately there were one or two injuries on the way, most notably Aoife Sheridan, who despite fracturing a finger insisted on staying to cheer on her team mates in the final. Now that's team spirit!
Downpatrick 0-0 Bredagh 9-11 League, Sunday May 31st - played on the same pitch where the girls had their hearts broken last September, this was an impressive result and there was the bonus of the Development Squad also recording a victory by 0-4 to 0-0. Every player got at least thirty minutes football and particular mention must go to three unlikely point scorers - experienced defenders Shauna Leitch, Aideen Murphy and Julia Hinds all crossing the half-way line for the first time to record excellent scores. The St Bernard's Schools League double act of Fiona White and Sara McCoy weighed in with lots more scores. Fiona, who won an All Star award this week, knocked in 3-1 in the first ten minutes while Sara had a goal either side of half-time. In the second-half, some good play by Meabh McKee and Lucy Mullan allowed Laura McAllister and Aisling Boyd in for fine points while Emma Duffy goaled on her debut. Overall, a good night and plenty of chocolate on the way home. Training is on Saturday at 10am unless there is a game.
Team & Scorers: Rachel Goldsmith 1-3, Eimear Kane, Shauna Leitch 0-1, Aideen Murphy 0-1, Julia Hinds 0-1, Lucy Doran, Alice McConville, Sara McCoy 2-0, Gemma Mullan, Aoife Sheridan 1-2, Meabh Colton, Éadaoin Ni Chiarrain 0-3, Aisling Macklin, Fiona White 3-1, Orlaith Downey 1-1, Emma Duffy 1-0, Aisling Boyd 0-1, Laura McAllister 0-1, Lucy Mullan, Cliona McCarney, Zoe Thompson, Meabh McKee.
Bredagh 1-4 Carryduff 4-3 League, Sunday May 21st - Bredagh opened their League campaign with a defeat to county champions Carryduff while the development team had an excellent win over the same opposition. Fielding without star player Aoife Sheridan, injured at training on Saturday, the team put in a brave performance but the Duff were stronger in central positions. The first half was evenly fought with points from Clare McVeigh and Rachel Goldsmith eating into the visitor's two-goal lead. Then the smallest girl on the pitch, Eadaoin Ni Chiarrain, went on a tremendous run to put pressure on the Duff defence and while the ball was partly cleared, Eadoin returned it with interest to the net. This left a two-point margin at half-time and Bredagh played their best football on the restart to record points from Orlaith Downey and Emer Kane and draw level. Unfortunately Carryduff got a lucky goal and then had the confidence to record a further 1-2 without reply to win by eight points. Still this was an encouraging performance and the girls will look forward to the next game away to Downpatrick.
Team: Meabh Colton, Alice McConville, Gemma Mullan, Shauna Leitch, Julia Hinds, Lucy Doran, Aine Canavan, Sara McCoy, Rachel Goldsmith, Orlaith Downey, Clare McVeigh, Aine O'Rourke, Eadaoin Ni Chiarrain, Emer Kane, Aisling Macklin, Fiona White, Hannah Scullion, Dearbhla McDonnell, Cliona McCarney, Cliona McCarney, Emma Bogues, Meabh McKee, Zoe Thompson.
Development Game - Bredagh 1-7 Carryduff 0-0 - despite the pouring rain every girl displayed commitment and courage. Cliona McCarney, Dearbhla McDonnell, Joni Gallagher and Hannah Scullion were strong in defence, while Fiona White (0-4), Eadaoin Ni Chiarrain (1-0), Clare McVeigh (0-1) and Sara McCoy (0-1) did the damage up front. The future is bright, the future is Bredagh! Training is on Thursday at 6.30pm.
A big thanks - to referee Emma Mulhearn.
Bredagh Clann Eireann Challenge game, May 2006 - this game was played over three 20-minute sessions with both sides bringing 24 players who all got an opportunity to show their skills. The first session went the way of the Bredagh girls with some great attacking play and strong defence. Good work in midfield and from the hard working half forwards led to some excellent scores. In particular, a well-taken catch from Orlaith Downey, who turned to drill her shot into the corner of the net, left Bredagh leading by 3-2 to 1-1 at the break. In the second and third sessions the Clann Eireann girls stepped up their play and, despite the Bredagh defence making the visitors work hard for every score, the Lurgan girls ran out worthy winners. Bredagh took the opportunity to ensure every girl had a chance to impress in this their first challenge game of the season. While there is still some work to do, there were many good performances throughout the team. Gemma Mullan played well at full back, while goalkeeper Laura McAllister pulled off some excellent saves, earning praise from the Clann Eireann coach at the end of this keenly contested match.

2005 Review
This group, in it’s inaugural year, had a memorable and historic season. The training sessions were well-attended and lively, with good camaraderie between the girls. They competed in the Down U-12 league and several blitz competitions. It was a great day for all concerned with the club when the girls won the Carryduff blitz - the first girls juvenile competition that Bredagh has won. The squad also reached the final of the Castlewellan blitz and the County final where they lost out by a single late score to Bryansford and Carryduff respectively. One of the most encouraging aspects was their response to their tough loss in the County final - the following Saturday at training the attendance and enthusiasm were back at their usual high standards. Definitely a team to watch out for in the future…
