U14 Girls Football Team in Championship Semi-Final
The Bredagh U14 Girls have reached the semi-final of the Down "A" championship following their 5-point win over Burren on Sunday 19th August.

A ferocious wind blowing down the pitch suggested this was to be a game of two halves, and so it proved.

Bredagh played with the wind in the first half and were able to build a healthy lead. Bredagh took a while to get their passing together after a long break from matches but soon started to build a lead through some excellent team-work and interplay.

The forwards capitalised on this by scoring several points and the whole Bredagh team played their part from defence through to attack.

As the half wore on the Bredagh midfield began to dominate and the goals started coming. It was certainly now one-way traffic and Burren battled extremely hard all over the pitch and their tenacity prevented an even bigger lead at half-time.

Burren also looked dangerous on the counter-attack and a combination of some ball-watching by the Bredagh defence and a couple of very talented Burren forwards enabled Burren to score 1-4 against the wind.

Bredagh responded with another couple of goals shortly before half-time, leaving the score 5-6 v 1-4 at the break.

The match was far from over at half-time, and the Bredagh coaches knew that the team would be up against it in the second half.

Bredagh started the second half as they had finished the first, and some excellent work from the midfielders and forwards enabled Bredagh to rattle in two quick goals which proved to be the decisive scores in the final analysis of the match.

However there was a lot more than went into the second half display than those two scores. The defence were under pressure for long spells but were brave and determined in every challenge. Despite their best efforts Burren started to score more freely with some good points and goals. Possession was key against the wind and excellent running from the defence and kick-outs from the goalkeeper gave Bredagh a chance of clearing the ball from defence.

Good support play and hand-passing from defence to midfield and up to the forward line gave Bredagh a foothold in the second half.

The Bredagh forwards sometimes took the wrong option against the wind but one of the most pleasing and important parts of the Bredagh performance was the way that the Bredagh forwards tackled and harried the Burren defence in possession - keeping the ball down in the Burren defence for significant periods.

As Bredagh tired, Burren scored a couple of goals but the Bredagh defence continued battling, with a couple of crucial saves from the Bredagh goalkeeper.

Nonetheless all the Bredagh supporters were glad to hear the final whistle as Bredagh ran out winners by 5 points.

Next Up: The semi final is now on Saturday 1st September in Saul at 2.00pm all support welcome. There is no training on this Saturday 25th but training is on Thursday 23rd at 7.00pm and Thursday 30th at 7.00pm.

Division A Down U 14 League - Bredagh chance to finish second in league!
Another win for Under 14 girls on Monday night 25th June - Bredagh 8-08 Teconnaught 1-04. Training now stopped in Cherryvale until 28th July.

Report on the performance throughout the season

Bredagh Under 14 girls won another game in their league campaign on Monday night. This marked the team’s sixth victory in a storming Division A campaign which has seen them beaten only by Carryduff. The season has allowed the more senior members of the squad to flourish with the help of a talented group of under 13's. The older girls, Cera Maguire, Rebecca Holywood, Emer Murtagh, Sarah Montgomery, Sorcha Deery, Emma Guerin, Ann Guerin and Kate O Hara have all developed tremendously. Their commitment, energy, skills, leadership and teamwork have all increased greatly and they have become an inspiration to the younger members of the squad.

Cera Maguire has made the move from the defensive position of left half back, into the full forward line, with ease and has capitalised on the support of her team players with a host of points and goals. Rebecca Holywood too has been able to put the points over and has made some tremendous scores this season. Aine Donnelly and Dominique Mc Cabe have taken training seriously and been able to make great use of space in the game. This smart play has resulted in a number of timely points and goals. The placing of Sorcha Deery in a new position in the forward line has allowed Bredagh to take the game to the opposition with her relentless foraging and attacks on goal. Other players making their mark in the forward line this year have been Aoife Sheridan, Gemma Mullan, Shauna Leitch and Claire McVeigh, all of whom have contributed with points and goals at crucial times to help their team on the road to victory.

Bredagh’s strength in midfield has come from the awesome pairing of Rachael Goldsmith and (captain fantastic) Sarah Montgomery. Rachael’s speed and determination combined with Sarah’s strength and accuracy has lead to them dictating the game on many occasions (and grabbing a few points along the way!).

Finally to the defence which the U14 coaches focused on in training after the defeat by Carryduff. Here the girls have excelled by sheer determination. Kate O’Hara in the centre half back position has led by example displaying great defensive skills and setting up many attacks. The two cousins Ann and Emma Guerin have been like the terrible twins running amok among the forwards of the opposition. Their guile and strength has been described by the coaches as absolutely amazing. Emma has moved from the back line and has been able to exercise greater influence on the game, supplying ball forward intelligently. Julia Hinds, Orla Downey, Dearbhla Rooney and the two Lucys (Doran and Russell), have inspired their team mates and frustrated many opposing sides through some determined tackling and quick passing out of defense. Other players making a name for themselves in defensive positions this year have been Alice McConville, Aideen Murphy and Sara McCoy.

Of course no defence can exist without a resolute goalie and Emer Murtagh has fulfilled this role for the U14’s in every game. Her game has been characterised by her coolness under pressure and she’ll be sorely missed next year.

The U14’s have a big squad this year and many players have made a magnificent contribution to all our games this season including Katie Campbell, Emir Kane, Anna Lyttle, Eve McPeake, Aine O’Rourke, Anna Lyttle, Aine Canavan, Clare Brown, Laura McAllister, Emma Moreland, Dearbhla Rooney, Maeve Wright, Hanna McGale, Sarah Quinn, Catherine Conaghan, Anna Doherty, Aisling Macklin, and Cliona McCarney. Of course the girls have room for improvement significantly in the areas of alertness during the game, holding on to the ball, making the ball do the work, accuracy in scoring and for the younger girls marking their players in defensive positions.

The coaches have been particularly happy with numbers turning up each Saturday morning for training. They have been delighted to see a fantastic team spirit develop, and all round skill levels and fitness improve.

The coaches would like to extend a big thank you to everyone.

Unlucky Defeats
U-14 League - the girls started the second League section with two unlucky and narrow defeats in South Down. Short a number of regulars, they were desperately unlucky to lose to Burren by just one point after a thriller – 4-11 to 5-7 (23 to 22), and then on Monday, August 21st, they lost at Mayobridge by 3-7 to 2-6, with the home side scoring a penalty and a point in the last minute.

Bryansford 4-2 Bredagh 4-8
League, Sunday June 25th - a brilliant win away to a club that has beaten Bredagh many times down the years in girls football. In fact, it's hard to recall a single victory! The Bredagh girls have now won seven League games in-a-row with wins over Castlewellan, Carryduff, Teconnaught, Saul, Bright, Loughinisland and Bryansford. Along the way, they conceded only 1-7 in the first six games. Unfortunately, they lost to Downpatrick in the first League game but it's still been a tremendous campaign.

Down beat Tyrone!
Five Bredagh U-14 Girls Footballers won their Ulster B Final with Down against Tyrone at Fintona on Saturday, June 17th. The score was 7-9 to 5-6 and the famous five are Nicole O'Connor, Cassie Moane, Cathy Short, Sarah Montgomery and Ciara McGuire. Four of the girls started the game - Nicole at full-back, Cathy at right-half-back, Ciara at left-half-back, and Sarah at left-corner-forward. In the Down website match report, Ciara McGuire was a contender for Player of the Match after 'giving an exhibition of half-back play'. The next match for the team is an All Ireland Quarter-final against Sligo or Roscommon on August 8th. The U-14s have now completed a double after winning the Ulster Blitz Shield.

Bredagh 4-7 Saul 0-2
League, Sunday June 4th - after their resounding victory over Teconnaught, the girls followed up with another great win. This is a very large and talented squad and an opportunity was given to four girls to make their first start for the team. Ann Guerin, Hannah McGale, Sarah Quinn and Dominique McCabe all started and all made telling contributions to this win.
The team started a little nervously and failed to score from some very good opportunities, the bar and the post were both hit early on. A fine point from Nikki Pauley and then a well taken goal from Ciara McGuire soon settled any nerves. Bredagh were now getting into their stride with Catherine Murphy and Peita McAllister dominant in midfield. The half back line of Cathy Short, Sarah Montgomery and Hannah McGale were winning a lot of ball and were distributing it accurately to the forwards. When Saul did venture further forward they were met by a very strong back three of Blathnaid Smylie, Emma Guerin and Ann Guerin, Emma marshalling brilliantly as ever. All of this meant the forwards were getting great opportunities and the scores soon started to mount up. Enya McCafferty was linking brilliantly with Nikki Pauley enabling Nikki to score two more fine points and then two superb goals from Cassie Moane and Ciara McGuire stretched Bredagh's lead. Cassie added a point before half time to leave the score Bredagh 3-4 Saul 0-0.
Second-half - Bredagh made three changes with Aine Donnelly, Anna Lyttle and Rebecca Hollywood all coming on. Saul started well and started to put some pressure on the Bredagh defence but although they scored two excellent points, the backline remained resolute with Ann Guerin playing particularly well. This acted as a wake up call for the rest of the team and they responded with a great point from Catherine Murphy and then Ciara McGuire lobbed a great ball over the Saul defence to Cassie Moane who made no mistake with a brilliant goal. Nikki Pauley scored her fourth point from a free and Sarah Montgomery finished off the scoring after bursting through from the half back line to take a great point from distance. Maeve McGourty and Jenny Gallagher came on for Bredagh and battled brilliantly. Yet another great team performance.
Team & Scorers: Emer Murtagh, Blathnaid Smylie, Emma Guerin, Ann Guerin, Hannah McGale, Sarah Montgomery 0-1, Cathy Short, Catherine Murphy 0-1, Peita McAlister, Sarah Quinn, Ciara McGuire 2-0, Enya McCafferty, Dominique McCabe, Cassie Moane 2-1, Nikki Pauley 0-4, Aine Donnelly, Anna Lyttle, Rebecca Hollywood, Maeve McGourty, Jenny Gallagher.
DEVELOPMENT GAME - Bredagh 1-2 Saul 0-1 - this was a great battling performance from all concerned. A goal from Enya McCafferty and two superb points from Sarah Montgomery and Sarah Quinn earned Bredagh the victory. Special mention must go to Sarah Quinn who not only scored a brilliant point but showed great bravery after injuring her ankle.

Bredagh 5-12 Teconnaught 0-0
League, Thursday June 1st - report to follow.

Carryduff 0-8 Bredagh 1-0
Development game, Saturday, May 27th - Bredagh battled bravely in the first half in monsoon-like conditions (Carryduff appears to have its own microclimate). The bitter wind and rain were blowing into their faces but against all the odds they took the lead with a superb goal from 'pocket rocket' Aine Donnelly who blasted the ball past the Carryduff keeper. Whilst this was Bredagh's only score the whole team played brilliantly to keep Carryduff's score down to just four points by half-time. The sun came out for the second-half and the wind subsided which allowed both teams to play a little more football. Unfortunately Bredagh squandered some very good chances whilst Carryduff rattled off four more points without reply. This was a very good performance however as it was the first time the girls had played together. They did not take long to gel together and only poor finishing let them down in the second half. Eimear Murtagh, Hannah McGale and Enya McCafferty played brilliantly and worked tirelessly throughout, while special mention must go to Roisin McAllister who had an outstanding game.

Carryduff 0-5 Bredagh 2-6
League, Sunday May 14th - on a very damp Sunday evening in Carryduff an outstanding second-half performance saw Bredagh pull away from a very strong Carryduff team and win quite comfortably. The match had been in the balance for the whole of the first-half.

SUPERB DEFENCE - a brilliant performance from the backs and midfield stifled the Carryduff forwards, meaning they had to settle for just two points in the first-half. Emer Murtagh was confident in goal and the full-back line of Blathnaid Smylie, Emma Guerin and Kate O'Hara battled superbly to keep Carryduff out. The half backs - Ciara McGuire, Nicole O'Connor and Cathy Short - prevented Carryduff from getting any flow to their game. Midfielders Peita McAlister and Sarah Montgomery were very busy thwarting Carryduff attacks time after time. The forward line were receiving some great passes from the half backs and midfield but the ball just would not 'stick' up front. Bredagh had to be content with two points by half-time, though both were very well-taken by Cathy Short and Cassie Moane. It had been a nervy first-half with both teams affected by the great rivalry between them and the wet conditions which made handling very difficult. Half-time: Carryduff 0-2 Bredagh 0-2.

SECOND-HALF - it was decided that a change was needed at half-time to try to keep the ball further up the field and create more opportunities for scoring. Nicole O'Connor was moved forward to replace Eithne McVeigh at full-forward. Kate O'Hara was switched to centre-half-back and Dearbhla Rooney came on at left-corner-back. Suddenly Bredagh took control of the game. The Carryduff backs were having great difficulty in containing Nicole and this left space for the other forwards to exploit.

GOALS - Nikki Pauley crossed a great ball in from the left and Nicole outjumped the defence to fire into the goal from close range. A few minutes later, after great inter-passing between Cassie Moane and Catherine Murphy, Nicole found herself clear and she didn't waste the opportunity to sidefoot the ball into the net. The confidence was high now and all the forwards were keen to get into the action. Enya McCafferty was supporting brilliantly on the left and more scores were inevitable. Cassie Moane scored a second point and Nikki Pauley followed this with a well-taken effort. Dearbhla Rooney (ill) was replaced by Jenny Gallagher and she deputised brilliantly, using her speed to intercept the ball. Carryduff were still dangerous and, to their credit, they managed three more points, although Nicole's 2 goals had taken the heart out of them. Further neatly-taken points from Rebecca Hollywood and Sarah Montgomery from midfield emphasised Bredagh's superiority as they completed a very important victory.

WELL DONE KATE!
This was a great team display with many outstanding performances, but let's mention Kate O'Hara who, in her first year proper with the U-14s, has settled into the team brilliantly.

Team: Emer Murtagh, Blathnaid Smylie, Emma Guerin, Kate O'Hara, Ciara McGuire, Nicole O'Connor, Cathy Short, Peita McAlister, Sarah Montgomery, Cassie Moane, Catherine Murphy, Enya McCafferty, Rebecca Hollywood, Eithne McVeigh, Nikki Pauley, Dearbhla Rooney, Jenny Gallagher, Aine Donnelly, Maeve McGourty, Anne Guerin.

DEVELOPMENT GAME
Bredagh put in a brilliant performance to win this game as well. There were great performances from all, including Sorcha Deery, Ann Guerin, Aine Donnelly, Jenny Gallagher, Dominique McCabe, Anna Lyttle, Emer Murtagh (outfield), Alice Donaldson, Hannah McGale, Maeve McGourty and Clare Brown.

2005 Review
UNDER-14s
A topsy-turvy season started with a battling draw against Downpatrick and some below-par performances against Carryduff and Bryansford. The away match against Castlewellan saw the team start to gel together and play to their undoubted potential, carving out an impressive victory. The girls had great wins at Bright and Downpatrick, playing some fantastic flowing football. The holiday season proved difficult to cope with as they struggled to field a team, losing to Bright and narrowly to Bryansford. This is a very young team with a lot of potential and next year it is anticipated that their development will accelerate.
