The Bredagh Sevens competition proved a very successful and enjoyable event with the coaches (pictured above) beating the ex-players in the final.
REPORT: Bredagh's first ever charity football Seven-a-side Tournament proved to be a runaway success with perfect Autumn weather matched by veteran footballers rolling back the years in the 'Autumn' of their careers!
Former Down star Donal Durkan emerged as Player of the Tournament on the winning team of Youth Coaches and Managers, ably assisted by the Derry duo of Eugene Irwin and Damian O'Kane, and former Bredagh Senior stalwarts Kieran Kelly, Peadar Doyle, Mickey Curran and Cillian Short. They started slowly (very slowly) with a defeat by the Seniors and a draw with the U-16s, to whom they conceded an average of 25 years to each player!
But then the old heads clicked into gear and the legends turned on the style with Durkan bagging an impressive hat-trick to oust the Committee team and send the Coaches into the last four. Goalkeeper Lorenzo McMullan, despite feeling a little bit vulnerable without his hurl, stabilised the defence; current Bredagh Senior Brendan O'Connell began to pull the strings and a much-needed injection of pace was provided by new signings Oisin Quinn and Niall Devlin.
In the semi-finals, the coaches surprised the Minors by coming from behind for a one-point victory, with Durkan cleverly taking two points from a pointed penalty. In the other semi, the highly-fancied Seniors with Henry Deazley, Kevin Muldoon, Liam McGarry and the Robinsons came a cropper against the wily Ex-players, so the decider was a surprise pairing of the Coaches against the Ex-players, showing that there is no substitute for experience and class, even if the legs are gone!
Playmaker Brian Caffrey and Darragh Mallon saw the Ex-players take control early on, but once again the Coaches showed great spirit to draw level and take a one-point lead. Referee Eamon Mulvenna became the centre of attention in a lively and controversial finish, with both teams having points disallowed, before the honours went to the Coaches.
All in all, it was a great day out and £250 was raised by voluntary donations towards Mencap, who were represented on the day by club member and ladies senior full back, Ciara Gallagher. The Sevens idea originated with Senior player Shane Donnelly and became a reality mainly thanks to Gerard Mullan, Kevin Muldoon and Conal Donnelly. Thanks also to referees Arlene McCloskey, Eamon Mulvenna, Micky Curran, Paul Doran and Liam McGarry.

PREVIEWS - Group 1(Big pitch)
Senior II
Manager: Patsy Owens
This will be a team to watch. Having only finished training within the last 3 weeks, the squad should be fresh and fired up to make at least the semi-finals. Patsy Owens is a well known club stalwart who will need all his experience to capitalise on the silky skills of Colm Reavey and the rugged determination of Paul O’Reilly. Nicky Dunne has also promised not to fight.
Ex-players
Manager: Jim O’Keefe
Somewhat of an unknown quantity, the ex-players team is one to watch out for. All time top scorer for Bredagh, Eamon Tunney makes a welcome return after spending a number of years selling fireworks at the border with Brian Caffrey. There is also speculation in the tabloids that players such as Daragh Mallon, the mighty Mickey Young and John Gilmore will pull on the maroon again for the day. A real treat for the kids in the club to meet in the flesh (much flesh) the legends of Bredagh football club.
Minors
Manager: Pat Mathews
If the minors can field a full squad, they are certainly joint favourites for the competition. The team can call upon the services of several senior stars including brunette Conal O’Neill, the ever reliable Conor McDaid and Tim Shannon and the enigmatic CJ Carson. Pat Mathews knows all his players well and should be able to pull together a strong challenge for the winners slot.
Celebrity X
Manager: TBC
A dark horse has emerged with this celebrity line out. No further comment until Saturday.
Group 2 (back pitch)
Senior I
Player/Manager: Jim Robinson
Undoubtedly one of the favourites for the competition, we are about to see after 3 years that there is in fact some footballing ability in the Robinson house. The team includes former players of the year Kevin Muldoon and Liam McGarry and is also hopeful that they can fly in Henry Deazely from his latest shoot in Hollywood. Quiet man Rory O’Donnell who joined the club from Keady this year is also expected to feature strongly.
Managers
Player/Manager: Jerome Quinn
With Armagh man Jerome Quinn leading from the front, the managers are considered good prospects for a semi-final place by which time they are more than likely going to collapse with exhaustion. They are able to call upon the services of that silver haired fox, Peadar Doyle, 1960s Down / Newry Mitchells stalwart, Donal Durkan and the silky smooth Ladies U-16s manager, Brendan O’Connell. Also watch out for players like Mickey Curran, Damian Canavan and Kieran Kelly who can all play a bit.
Committee
Manager: Eamon Gilmore
With the committee responsible for all the cash in the club, we had to invite them to put in a team. The team is managed by founder member, former player and one of the clubs most successful senior managers, Eamon Gilmore. Eamon might well have to make a playing comeback here. Awaiting a late fitness test on Nicky McCafferty to establish whether he can run, the team will rely heavily upon the recently retired player and current Down over 40 Paul Doran. Paul will be having a party in his house afterwards. With score difference important in qualification from the group stage, this team is expected to have a big say in who goes through!
U-16s
Manager: Ciaran Boyle / Stephen Brown
Boylers boys were so nearly winners of the B championship this year, beaten only after a reply by St Pauls. This experience and the fact that they have trained and played together all year should see them put in a meaningful challenge to the older members of the club. No doubt as always Ciaran will have the boys fired up and ready to go.
Reserves v Dundrum
East Down Reserve football on a horrible October Sunday afternoon in Cherryvale. Mind you, the team played it's best football of the season according to coach Reavey and won the game with Dundrum.
