Bredagh news in January 2007

Under 12 indoor hurling
Bredagh 4 Creggan 5
Bredagh 3 Cushendun 1
Bredagh 1 Cushendall 2
Bredagh 1 St Enda's 2
Bredagh 2 Glenravel 2
Bredagh 1 Ballycastle 1

Bredagh were up against it being drawn in a very tough section and althopugh they didn't qualify for the final they did the club proud taking the scalp of Emmets, Cushendun, going down by a single goal against Creggan, Cushendall and St Enda's and drawing with Ballycastle and Glenravel.

The first match saw Bredagh lose 5-4 to Kickham Creggans with Lorcan McMullan and Stevie Dougal notching a brace apiece. Michael Deery scored two great goals to beat Cushendun 3-1 with Ruairi Sheridan getting Bredagh's other goal. In the third match Bredagh were unlucky to lose to Cushendall 2-1, top scorer McMullan getting the solitary goal. St Enda's managed the same result and it was Stevie Dougal who scored for Bredagh this time. The last two matches ended in draws, 2-2 with Glenravel with Stevie getting another goal and young Aidan Donaghy accounting for the other one. While in the final match, defender Michael Cassidy got Bredagh's goal drawing 1-1 with the mighty Ballycastle.

Overall this was a great performance from the Bredagh u12s and it shows they are one of the top teams in Ulster at this level.

U12 hurling league-report
Bredagh 9 All Saints 2
Bredagh 8 Ballygalget 0
Bredagh 2 St Galls 1
Bredagh won 2 out of their 3 matches in the second week of the North Antrim Inddor hurling league and have been graded into section 2 along with the hurling elite of Loughguile, Ballycastle and Cushendall. The highest Bredagh have been graded before has been section 4. The Bredagh boys were first up against All Saints and started at a frenetic pace pulverising their hosts with Lorcan McMullan notching a magnificient 7 goals and striker Sheridan weighing in with another 2. The second match saw them whitewash their Down rivals, Ballygalget, 8-0, again McMullan top scored with 4, Oisin Smylie got a brace as did Michael Cassidy with two long range efforts from his defensive position. Joe Shields was excellent in goal, keeping a clean sheet. In the final game. after a long wait, the Bredagh boys were caught napping by a young St Galls side who were under pressure for most of the match trailing to a Michael Cassidy goal but managed to sneak a winner late on.Next week the graded sections are to be played to a finish (6 matches) to see who makes it to the final on the 3rd February at the Tower centre in Ballymena. Bredagh has managed to get there over the past two years, although this was in sections 5 and 4. This time they're up in section 2 with the North Antrim elite, that said this bunch of boys are good enough to do Bredagh and Down proud come next Saturday in Ballymena.

Panel and Scorers: Joe Shields, Michael Cassidy 0-3, Oisin Smylie 0-2, Aaron Maguire, Lorcan Smylie, Lorcan McMullan 0-11, Ruairi Sheridan 0-2.

Minor football challenge - report
Bredagh 2-07 St Brides 0-02

Bredagh got their Minor season off to a very satisfactory start with a well deserved victory over St Brides.
Played over three 20-minute periods at a windswept Mallusk, both sides looked decidedly ring rusty in the opening period. The score at the 1st break was just 1 point a piece (John McKenna free).
Bredagh kicked into gear though in the 2nd 20. The turning point was a Conal Doherty goal, well finished and coming from an excellent Owen Costello pass. McKenna (2), Hughes and Hollywood all pointed to leave the score 1-05 to 0-02 at the next break. St Brides weren't to score again!
Matthew Hollywood scored a well deserved goal and McKenna and Doherty added further points to finish the match as a contest.
Overall it was a job well done, although there will be tougher games ahead and fitness and sharpness need to be worked on. Colton, McElroy and Smart marshalled the defence well, while Conal O'Neill won the "Man of the Match" award for a sterling midfield display.

Under 12 hurlers
U12 North Antrim Indoor hurling league was were the Bredagh young hurlers started their competitive action in 2007.In the first round of games they came away with the following results:

Bredagh 3 Glenravel 3
Bredagh 0 Loughguile 6
Bredagh 10 Pearses 0

The first match up was against Con Magee's, Glenravel, and Bredagh surprised them early on with two quick fire goals from sharpshooter Joe Shields. Glenravel pulled one back before full forward Ruairi Sheridan found the corner but Glenravel replied just before halftime to cut Bredagh's lead to one. The second half was very competitive with Lorcan McMullan and Michael Cassidy going close before Glenravel sneaked a late equaliser to draw the game. Bredagh's second match was against a very strong Loughguile Shamrocks side who were three up within the first two minutes. Bredagh were unable to recover after such a poor start and while Daniel Mulvenna made a number of fine saves, Loughguile notched up another hat-trick of scores. Young Aaron Maguire had an opportunity for a consolation goal only to see his penalty shot come off the post. In the final match of the first week, Bredagh were determined to make up for the previous match and that they did firing in 10 goals against Pearses, Belfast. Lorcan McMullan, Ruairi Sheridan, Aaron Maguire and Lorcan Smylie all got braces apiece with Joe Shields and goalkeeper Aidan Donaghy getting a goal a piece. Pearses never looked like scoring with Michael Cassidy putting on a masterful display in defence equalled by superb goalkeeping from Aidan Donaghy. Next week Bredagh play All Saint's Ballymena, St Gall's and Ballygalget and these results will determine what league they are graded into for the following two rounds of the competition. Panel and Scorers: Aidan Donaghy 1-0, Michael Cassidy, Lorcan Smylie 2-0, Oisin Smylie, Joseph Shields 3-0, Lorcan McMullan 2-0, Micheal Deery, Aaron Maguire 2-0, Daniel Mulvenna, Ruairi Sheridan 3-0.
