Challenge, Sunday Feb 16: St Brides 3-6 Bredagh 4-10
Well done new manager Paul Boyd for getting off to a winning start. With only fifteen players and away from home against a physical St Brides team, Bredagh came away with a fine win. James Johnston was undoubtedly the star in scoring 2-5, and surely he will figure for the Down U-16s again this season if he keeps up this form. Many of last year's U-14s made the transition to the U-16s smoothly, with 'Pup' simply superb in goals and good performances from Joe Steele, Niall Boyle, Paul McCurry and Stephen Gray.
TEAM & SCORERS: Pup, James McAllister, Dermot Coffey, Ryan Irvine, Niall Boyle, Stephen Gray 0-1, Aidan O'Neill, James Johnston 2-5, Kevin Harte (captain), Declan Noble, Conal Short, Paul McCurry 0-1, Niall Devlin 1-1, Paul Boyd, Joe Steele 1-2.
U-14 CHALLENGE - St Brides 1-5 Bredagh 3-5 An excellent and determined performance in a challenge game by Frank McKenna's team. Scorers: Niall Colton 1-2, John McKenna 1-2, Sean Irwin 1-0, Eoin Costello 0-1. Man of the Match - Niall Colton (captain) 1-2 from left-half back. Eoin Costello and Kevin McElroy controlled the midfield area... TRAINING ON SUNDAY FROM 10.00am
'Super' People - Austin Special guest Liam Austin praised the organisers of the Dinner on February 1st and said he 'really enjoyed' the evening. 'The whole thing worked like clockwork and I met a lot of super people. I was presented with golf balls which will be very useful though knowing my game they won't last long!' Pride of place at the Dinner went to the Women footballers who completed the senior double for the first time ever. Chairperson of the Ladies County Board, Gerry Campbell, paid tribute to the club and commended Bredagh on it's work with underage players. Liam Austin presented the award winners for 2002: Women: Player of the year - Jackie McAllister, Club Person of the year - Lorraine McCaffrey, Most Improved Player - Nell O'Neill. Men: Player of the year - Shane Donnelly, Reserve Player of the year - Paul Doran, Most Improved Player - Conall Donnelly, Club Person of the year - Ciaran O'Keefe.
