Bredagh news in November 2006
Support our young hurlers The Down Academy Hurling Squad, which includes the four Bredagh players Paddy, Eoghan, Paul and Rowen, play Ballycran in the Minor A Championship final on Sunday at Cherryvale (1.30p.m. start). The minor "A" title has never been won by a team from outside the Ards and our lads have a chance of making history on Sunday, against a very strong Ballycran side. Your attendance (and vociferous vocal support) would be greatly appreciated on the day - we all know what a difference that good support can make to the performance of any team, so do your best to get along to Cherryvale on Sunday. Bring all your family and friends too, in fact, bring anyone you know and make plenty of noise on the day.
Down supporters club The Down Supporters club will make a special presentation to Loughinisland Clubman, Alan Molloy in recognition of his ten years service to the Down Senior Team at their 21st Annual General Meeting which will take place in the Kearney Suite, Canal Court Hotel, Newry on Thursday 30th November at 8.00 pm. All Down supporters are welcome, and light refreshments will be served

The management regret that this happened and would like to thank all the boys who attended training for their commitment. Any further queries should be directed to Frank McKenna or Boyd Devlin

U16B HC Final report

U16B HC Final-Bredagh 4-3 Carryduff 1-5
On Sunday afternoon Bredagh claimed their first Under16 Hurling Championship title with this fine 7 points victory over neighbours Carryduff at Balella's lovely new pitch. The game was not for the purist; it was a war of attrition between two well prepared and fully committed sides. Carryduff played with an intensity and passion that made life very difficult for Bredagh and this resulted in such a low scoring affair. There was little between the teams in the first half as both teams battled for supremacy. Carryduff were first to score with a pointed free but Cormac Hughes replied with a similar score. Midway through the half Michael Guerin struck for 2 goals inside 5 minutes, both well taken ground shots. It was hoped Bredagh would pull away at this stage but Carryduff pressed forward themselves and were rewarded with a goal of their own. Emmett Costello pulled off 2 great saves as Bredagh hung on to their lead and went in at the break 3 points up on a scoreline of 2-2 to 1-2, the other Bredagh point a Cormac Hughes free. Bredagh upped their workrate in the second half and really took the game to Carryduff. For long spells they were camped in the Carryduff half but the scores were difficult to come by due to some brilliant 'Duff defending. They literally hunted in packs stifling many of Bredagh's attacking moves. Michael Magee who had an excellent game did manage to break through and kick a point. There were numerous goal mouth scrambles but Bredagh couldn't force the ball over the line. Then Conall Doherty's shot for a point dipped under the bar and into the net to the relief of the large Bredagh support. Carryduff replied with a point and then Matthew McAfee made the game safe when he pounced to flick the ball home from close range. 9 points up with 10 minutes left it was felt Bredagh might extend this lead but it was Carryduff who finished the stronger and tagged on 2 pointed frees to leave 7 in it at the finish. This was not a day for picking out individuals; it was a superb team performance from all 17 who played. The title was just reward for the effort and committment shown by these young men over the entire season and it was a proud and deserving captain Michael Mullan who accepted the cup from Down Hurling Board representitive, Dermot Stewart. Team and Scorers Emmett Costello, Daniel Higgins, Paddy Woods, Pearse Leitch, Cormac White, Michael Mullan, Matthew Mullan, Cormac Hughes 0-2, Matthew McAfee 1-0, Michael Magee 0-1, Donal McKegney, Niall Wright, Christian Hunter, Conall Doherty 1-0, Michael Guerin 2-0 Subs; Ciaran Kelly, James Cormican, Conall Mulholland, Conor McCloskey, Damhan Farmer and Donal Hughes(injured)

Bredagh girls represent County

South Belfast Gaels were well-represented as no fewer than 9 girls from Bredagh and Carryduff joined players from Bosco, Bryansford, Downpatrick, Saul and Saval on Down's first ever U12 girls inter-county football squad.Bredagh's Rachel Goldsmith, Aoife Sheridan, Gemma Mullan and Julia Hinds, together with Carryduff's Orla Mckay, Meghan Doherty, Niamh Lenaghan, Fiona McCauley and Ciara Crosbie, did their clubs and county proud as they turned in excellent performances in the Clare Inter-County U12 Ladies Football Blitz in Ennis at the weekend. However, although Down competed well throughout, their lack of experience at this level told when, despite leading for most of the first half, they lost out in an exciting opening encounter with the host county, Clare. This was followed by defeats to well-established and stronger teams from Galway and the eventual tournament winners, Kerry.Bredagh's Aoife Sheridan made a little bit of history when she became the first scorer for the county at this level with her opening point against Clare, whilst Carryduff's Fiona McCauley scored Down's only point against the Kingdom. Indeed every girl played in at least two games and showed tremendous spirit throughout.Down were warmly received by Co. Clare Ladies Chairman, James Lafferty, who thanked them for making the journey and extended an invite to next year's tournament. The trip was a useful exercise that gave girls from across the county the chance to play together, compete and hopefully learn from the high standard of football on display from all counties involved.
