Newry Mitchels Reports
A coachload of red-shirted boys and girls arrived on Sunday morning March 30th all the way from Newry for the first challenge between the Mitchels and Bredagh. The Under-8s had two 7-a-side games, the U-10s were too strong for their opposition, and the U-12s played their 'A' team in the first-half and their 'B' team in the second-half. Everyone got a drink and crisps at the end, the sun came out, it was a great day, and later in the year Bredagh will make a return trip to the Newry club.

U-8 REPORT: GAME ONE - Bredagh 4-9 Mitchels 4-6 - Bredagh fielded a total of 30 boys and girls, with the U-6's taken for a separate skills session and game which was overseen and assisted by Aidan Doherty. There were in fact two U-8 games against the Mitchels - two teams of seven and named ‘Team A & B’. Team A played a very exciting match with some great moves, scores and play, winning with a score of 4-9 to 4-6. Bredagh were the stronger side in the first half and displayed some great skill and ability, which was commented upon by some of the Bredagh Senior men’s team as they assembled for training, indeed some were overheard as saying: "Did you see that score, we could be doing with him on our team!" In the second-half, Newry staged a great comeback scoring 3 goals on the trot, but Bredagh just held on in the end to have their first win of the season. Bredagh’s best players were Lorcan McMullan, Niall Fitzpatrick (scoring 2-3) and Niall Kelly (scoring 2-2).

U-8 REPORT: GAME TWO - Bredagh 0-22 Mitchels 0-6 - This was a convincing win with the team demonstrating good control in all positions, with quality passing and some excellent scores. Of note was an excellent point from the half-way line by Donal O'Kane. Other key performances came from Daire McPeake and Donal McLaughlin with keen counter-attacking needed, as at times the Newry Mitchels fought back in midfield during the second-half. However fine defence, as well as sharp goal-keeping from Eoin McCloskey paved the way for a great early season lift, raising the spirits of all the 30 strong U-8 team members. What a reward for all that hard Sunday morning training throughout the year!

U-12 REPORT: This was an opportunity for everyone to get a game before the league starts and the Bredagh lads rose to the challenge. In the first-half, the forwards took their scores well with Ryan McIlkerney scoring two early cracking goals and Marcus Young dictating the play, while the second-half saw the defenders come under pressure, but MVP Donal McKegney led his line well and prevented many Newry scores. Ben McCaughey scored two great goals and Marty O'Hara made a superb diving penalty save.

U-12 TEAM & SCORERS: Paddy Woods 1-1, Donal McKegney, Michael Guerin, Rowan Blaney, Michael Magee, Damien Moreland, Pearse Leitch, Donal Hughes 1-0, Emmett Costello, Ben Horner 1-0, Marcus Young 1-0, Aaron McPeake 1-0, Ryan McElkerney 2-0, Paddy Hannity 1-0, Ciaran Fitzpatrick, Breanain O'Callaghan, Kieran McKavanagh 1-0, Ben McCaughey 2-0, Niall Boyd, Marty O'Hara, Marty Maguire, Damhan Farmer, Nathan Moreland, James Archer.

SPECIAL GUESTS QUOTES
'Your young players are as good as anyone in the whole county' - Down Coaching Officer and county player Shane King.

'There's a Division Four club in Antrim (McDermotts) who have a player on the county team this week. From what I can see tonight, Bredagh will soon repeat that feat' - Antrim hurling assistant Ger Rogan.

'We had an historic year in 2002 at senior level, but the progress with the girls teams is just as important. Keep it up girls!' - Arlene McCloskey, Ulster ladies captain.

'I was called to a meeting in Croke Park tonight, but I'm glad I came here instead' - Jarlath Burns, former Armagh captain and TV Pundit.

'I've never heard such a variety of accents at one club as I have tonight! In years to come, I have no doubt there will be more Belfast accents as home-grown players come through the youth system' - Shane King.
