Bredagh news in April 2003

Club Award
Bredagh has won a £750 Development Package cheque from the Irish News for being highly-recommended in the City Club section of the newspaper's inaugural club awards scheme. Hundreds of clubs entered, with many from Belfast, Armagh, Newry and Derry in competition with Bredagh, yet we were one of only two clubs honoured at the ceremony, Ardoyne Kickhams being the other one. As Paul Doran said last week: 'This is a remarkable achievement for a club without a base and is a tribute to the members at all levels who unselfishly give of their time'. Chairman Nicky McCafferty collected the cheque and praised all parts of the club, from the girls to the hurlers and from the underage boys to the senior men.

Minors Do Well at Feis
For the first time in many years Bredagh Minors took part in the Feis Sevens - many thanks to all the managers and players who made the effort. The lads beat Ardglass by 2-5 to 2-3 in their first game, with two goals from Shane Matthews. They then lost to Bryansford by 0-9 to 1-1, but put on a great show and eight of the nine players can play again next year. Team: Shane Matthews, Brian Willigan, Conor Carson, Conor Rafferty, Aaron Quinn, Conal O´Neill, Eddie Burns, Paul Alexander and Rory McCaughey.
NOTE: ´The Minors play on Tuesday night, Sunday night and again next Tuesday night, see ´This week´s Games´.

Portaferry Hurling Visit
After the recent visit by Ballycran, we were delighted to host another of the famous Ards teams. Portaferry played our Under-10 and Under-12s on Saturday, April 26th, using mobile posts on adjoining pitches, and again, it was a terrific sight to see the games being played. There are more details in the hurling sections of this website - click on 'Youth' at the top of this page.

O'Hara & Hughes for Down
The last time Bredagh had two men on a full county team was probably back in the late seventies in the days of Bill Gardner, Damian Watson and John Wright. But the feat was repeated on Sunday April 6th when two of our brightest young stars lined out with Shane King's U-13 Development Team for a game at Newcastle before the NFL match between Down and Meath.

Declan O'Hara (picture right) made the starting fifteen (from a 35-strong squad) at left-corner-back and Cormac Hughes (picture left) was centre-half-forward, making it a very proud day for themselves, their families and for the whole club. The boys have worked hard with the county panel on most weekends over the past three months and have impressed everyone with their commitment and skill. They both acquitted themselves very well, despite coming up against a bigger and older club team from the Tyrone club Dromore.

Brilliant news! Four of Bredagh's Under-16s have been named on the East Down Down Development Squads after a series of trials in the past four weeks. There are two teams, at U-15 and U-16.

Stephen Gray (pictured above) has been named on the U-15 team and

Three is the number
Bredagh seniors lost their third game by three points at home to league leaders St Johns. However, this was a much better performance and Conor Owens showed he is the best thing to come out of Seattle since Frazer Crane, scoring, you've guessed it, 3-3.

PREVIOUS SENIOR MATCHES- Bredagh seniors lost out to Bright in their opening league fixture, and then to St Pauls. Click here for full reports.

BREDAGH RESERVES gained some revenge for losing out in last year's playoff by hammering old rivals Carryduff at Cherryvale. Paddy Finnegan had a field day, recording 2-6 ,while manager Colm Reavey hailed the performance as very satisfying. Final score Bredagh 5-12 Carryduff 2-0. Click here for the full report.

Senior match tonight
The senior match between Bredagh and St John's has been switched from Sunday to tonight, Good Friday at 7pm in Cherryvale.

Bredagh jerseys for sale
Bredagh players now have the opportunity to buy their very own Bredagh jersey. These are old jerseys with the names of former sponsors on them but have become seperated from the rest of their set (or the rest of the set have become seperated from them).

These jerseys, which would make good training gear, start at £12 and socks and gloves are also available from £5.

For further details, contact Paddy Finnegan.

Senior training resumes
Bredagh senior training resumes tonight, Wednesday, for all Seniors and Reserves. Minors are also welcome.

Another chapter in the story of Bredagh CLG began on Sunday 6th April, when the seconds kicked off the senior football season for 2003 at St. Johns. Although the result was a disappointing 4-07 to 0-12 defeat, a great deal of encouragement can taken from the team performance. There was some fluent and crisp passing by Bredagh throughout the match and the Reserves held the upper hand for long periods of both halves.

But, ultimately it was some naïve defending that lead to the four goals, two in each half, caused perhaps by a mixture of rustiness and some of the new players bedding in.

There was some heroic performances from Bredagh, those that stood out were Mark Robinson in defence and Pete Carr in attack and a special mention for an eye catching defensive debut from Jude McCann, his man will not forget him for a day or two, But Colm Reavey again proved that there is no substitute for experience and sheer talent with a fantastic performance that almost single handedly won the game for Bredagh. It was a privilege to have been at the match to watch this colossus in action.

A special mention for the Bredagh forwards showed great accuracy in their shooting and I was particularly impressed by the way they were able to hit the goalkeeper from all angles.
