U-12 Hurling U12 Go Games Sat 28th May
Ballygalget 5-7 Bredagh 0-1
Bredagh U12’s began their 2007 campaign with a difficult away assignment in Ballygalget.
Bredagh started brightly and against a stiff breeze, held the home side to just 5 unanswered points at the break. Donal Smyth was safe between the sticks ably assisted by the prominent Niall Fitzpatrick and Conor Francis in defence. Sean Mc Gourty worked tirelessly at centre back with Daniel Devlin and Aidan Donaghy trying hard at midfield, facing a strong Ballygalget pairing.
Probably the lack of match sharpness told in the end as Ballygalget eventually got through the Bredagh rearguard in the last quarter to pull away comfortably. Odhran Devlin and Sean Blaney put in solid second half performances and Conor Costello tested the Ballygalget backs with several foraging runs. Daniel Mulvenna and Damian Hanrahan caught the eye in an attack that got little opportunity to shine . Bredagh’s only score came from a placed ball by Aidan Donaghy.
Many of these Bredagh lads will still be eligible to play U12 hurling next year and will undoubtedly improve with hard work and application. It is going to be a testing season playing in the top group with the Ards clubs but the lads can only learn from the experiences of playing against the stronger sides.
Next week, Bredagh host Portaferry at Cherryvale, throw in at 2pm. Players are asked to meet at Cherryvale 1.30pm sharp.
Squad: Donal Smyth, Mark Patterson, Niall Fitzpatrick, Conor Francis, Oisin Smylie, Sean Mc Gourty, Sean Blaney, Aidan Donaghy, Daniel Devlin, Caolan Schable, Conor Costelloe, Caolan Power, Damian Hanrahan, Daniel Mulvenna, Odhran Devlin. Rory Collins, Niall Smyth, Conal Gormley.
U14 Football Feile The U14’s proudly represented the club in the Down Feile at An Riocht on Saturday . A win and a draw wasn’t enough however to take them through to the next stage as they lost out on score difference. The boys were in a very difficult group which included An Riocht, Kilcoo and Rostrevor. The boys lost the first match against a very strong Rostrevor team. However they came out a totally different side for the second match against last year’s All-Ireland winners Kilcoo. They play with belief and confidence scoring three fantastic goals , the last of which came from Lorcan McMullan in the final minute to gain a very well deserved draw. In this breathtaking encounter the Belfast boys gained the support of the neutrals in the heart of South Down for their gallant efforts. The boys then went straight back on to play the host club An Riocht and although they gained a victory the margin was not enough to take them to the next stage.
U14 Camógs for Ulster Féile Bredagh girls will play in the first ever Ulster Camógie Féile, to be run off on Saturday 5th May, in parallel to the boys’ competition. The girls have been allocated to Division B, and will play against Cushendall of Antrim and Greenlough, Glen and Ballinderry of Derry. Their matches will be based in Swatragh. The Ulster Féile parade follows in Ballycastle later that day. Only one other Down club, Ballycran, is involved in this new venture and they will play in Division A. As the first match is at 10.00 am, coaches ask players to be in Cherryvale for 8.00 am. Thanks to the Ulster Council for the invitation. '

U-12 report Under 12 Boys continue winning start.
The U-12 boys continued their winning start to the season with an emphatic victory over Bryansford at Cherryvale on Sunday. Bredagh set out their stall with a great move from the throw in, finished off by a well taken point from captain Oisin Smiley. Bredagh continued to pile the pressure on the Bryansford defense and it came as no surprise when half forward Aidan Donaghy scored the first of his two goals, and the teams five. To their credit Bryansford battled hard but found difficulty in breaking down a solid Bredagh defence, which found Ruairi Comiskey and James Durkin in sparkling form.
As the game moved into the second period the Bredagh midfield of Donal McLaughlin and Caoilin Schable began to really control the game and give the forwards a strong platform to continue their good work of the first half. Donal O’Kane and Connor Costello were two in particular who benefited from the well set up possession. The second half performance was particularly pleasing as Bredagh played against a strong breeze and a much more resolute Bryansford team. Final Score Bredagh 5-10 Bryansford 1-5
Next game is a friendly on Sunday 29th April against St Enda’s of Antrim at St Malachy’s College, Antrim Road. Meeting in Cherryvale at 10.00, and traveling for an 11.00 o’clock throw in.

U-16 Football U 16 League- Bredagh 5-12 Drumaness 0-3
An impressive start indeed to the 2007 campaign with this comprehensive victory over Drumaness at Cherryvale. With a total of 21 players used and with Michael Magee the new team captain leading by example, there were star performances all over the field from the throw in right through to the final whistle. No doubt there will be more difficult games ahead but the team management will surely have been encouraged by the commitment and skill shown by all the players involved.
Bredagh scorers: Conal Devlin 2-1, Conor Mc Cluskey 2-1, Marcus Young 1-3, Donal Hughes 0-3, Ciaran Fitzpatrick 0-1, Niall Wright 0-1, Ryan Curran 0-1, Ruari Johnston 0-1.
Boy's U-14 Football win Bredagh 3-10 Downpatrick 3-4
The U14 boys(Team A) got their league campaign off to an impressive start with a 6 point win against Downpatrick at Cherryvale on Thursday night. The boys took some time to settle in the first half with a number of missed opportunities. However as the half progressed they started to put some excellent passes together and went in at the break with a 5 point lead . The best score of the half was a goal from Jack Hollywood. In the second half the Downpatrick lads put up a brave battle with the very impressive Ryan Slavin leading the attack. With 15 minutes left in the game there were only two points between the teams when the home side started to dominate the game with Tim Durkan and Niall Irwin adding two well taken goals. A long range point from Ben Scullion in the last minute marked the end of a hard fought game. The management team were very pleased with the all round team performance as the boys start off their new season.

Senior Ladies report.... Bredagh 1-6 Bryansford 5-11
While the result on the scoreboard was disappointing for the first game of the 2007 season the performance and attitude by those Bredagh Belles that stepped up to the plate was spirited! With a number of belles retiring from the game, transferring away from the club and unavailable for selection meant that many of those that took the field for Bredagh on Saturday were playing their first game at senior level. It was always going to be a tough encounter. A combination of nerves and players adjusting to new positions allowed Bryansford to dominate in the first half. Bredagh found some familiar form in the second half as they outscored Bryansford but there was too much of a mountain to climb to walk away with a win.
Scorers: Maeve Gallagher 1-2, Niamh Gallagher, 0-2, Emma Mulhern 0-1
Team: Fionuala McAtamney, Jamie Willighan, Siobhán McCarney, Grainne Hughes, Lisa Kelly, Maeliosa Hardy, Hannah Murray, Emma Mulhern, Geraldine Campbell, Niamh Gallagher, Maeve Gallagher, Clare Byrne, Joanne Corrigan, Ciara Gallagher, Lorraine McCaffrey. Subs: Polly Moane, Laura Willighan, Suzi Irwin

Minor Hurling report Minor Hurling League Section A Portaferry 3-13 0-03 Bredagh Bredagh minor hurlers travelled to Portaferry for their first league match of the new season and gave the locals a real run for their money, especially in the first half.
The match was played on Portaferry’s new pitch in ideal conditions for hurling and the Bredagh lads rose to the occasion in the early exchanges. 2 points for Portaferry were quickly followed by 2 for Bredagh. The first came from a Cormac Hughes free after good work by Michael Magee and Matthew McAfee and the second from play when Christian Hunter knocked the ball over on his weaker side from 45m out.
Portaferry knocked over another 2 points mid way through the first half but the Bredagh mid field pair of Donal and Cormac Hughes were now dominant and Cormac punished Portaferry with a well taken free from 80 yards following a foul on Donal.
With only a point in the game Portaferry threw everything at the young Bredagh lads but the half back line of Mullan, Devlin and team captain Smart held firm. With a minute to go to the break the Portaferry full forward broke through the Bredagh defence and drove to the net to leave the score 1-04 to 0-03 at half time.
In the second half Portaferry came out all guns blazing and for 15 minutes bombarded the Bredagh goal mouth. Keeper Doherty pulled off a string of fine saves and the full back line of Higgins, Woods and McKegney blocked, hooked and tackled continually while under serious pressure from the Portaferry forwards - 4 of whom are on the county panel. Despite their best efforts’ Portaferry still managed 2 goals and 6 points but the never say die attitude of Paddy Woods led one of the Portaferry mentors to compare him to Diamuid “The Rock” O’Sullivan! In the last 10 minutes Bredagh came back into the game and McElroy (playing his first ever game of hurling!) and McAfee had good goal chances saved by the excellent Portaferry goal keeper. Despite a spell of sustained pressure Bredagh failed to land another score and the game ended - Portaferry 3-11 0-03 Bredagh.
This was another case of the score line not reflecting the match however if this team stick together and maintain the good attendance at training it won’t be long before they get their first win in the Ards. It was particularly pleasing to note the fine performances from the younger members of the team (Magee, Kelly and Farmer) who were playing at minor level for the first time. If they continue to display the commitment they showed in this match they have a good future ahead of them in the game.
Team and scores: Conal Doherty, Danny Higgins, Paddy Woods, Donal McKegney, Mark Devlin, Rowan Smart, Michael Mullan, Cormac Hughes (0-02), Donal Hughes, Matthew McAfee, Michael Magee, Christian Hunter (0-01), Mark McElroy, Ciaran Kelly, Damhan Farmer.
Training continues on Saturday at 1.30. Next match is a home to Ballycran on Monday 23 April. Meet at Cherryvale at 6.15.
Hurlers Down Div 2 win.. Bredagh 7-20 Ballyvarley 0-03 Half Time 4-11 Ballyvarley 0-03
Bredagh scored it's biggest vicory ever and as the score suggests this match was 'a stroll in the park' for a strong Bredagh outfit against a very weak Ballyvarley side. It's a pity the same scoreline wasn't produced in last year's junior hurling final when Ballyvarley came through to represent Down in the Ulster championship.
The game as a contest was over before half-time when McLoughney had notched a hat-trick of goals to give Bredagh an unassailable lead of 20 points. That half saw Galway as accurate as ever scoring 0-04 of his 1-06 total as well as corner back Stevie McGettrick roaming up the field to land 2 well taken points. Anderson landed a fine point and full-forward McKillop got 0-03 of his 1-04 haul to put Ballyvarley out of sight.
The second-half was more of the same with Doole to the fore scoring 1-01, McLoughney finishing off well to top score at 4-02 and Galway landing a major direct from a sideline cut. Score of the evening has to go to 'Seemore' Murray who fielded a high ball and drove it over the black spot from all of 70 yds. McCamphill added his second point before O'Neill rounded off the scoring with a minor.
Both McMullan and Sidebottom who shared a half a piece in nets had little to do and had no worries over keeping a clean sheet. Whyte put in another fine performance at fullback, while McCollum and young Eoghan Donnelly were very impressive in the halfback line. To emphasis Bredagh's strength in depth Danny Hughes joined the fray in the second half stamping his presence along the halfback line. Murray put in another high performance at midfield as did his partner Ian Galway scoring an impressive 1-03 from play. Half-forwards McCamphill and Anderson put in a lot of hard work feeding excellent ball to Doole, McKillop and McLoughney whose combined scoring amounted to a staggering 6-07
This was Bredagh's biggest ever victory and will give the squad a lot of confidence going forward. That said it would be important that they don't read too much into it as Ballyvarley were a shadow of their winning junior hurling team. Next match sees Bredagh take it's first steps into the Antrim D3 league with a home game against Cloughmills who no doubt will provide a more difficult encounter than that served up by Ballyvarley.
Panel and scorers: Lorenzo McMullan, Stevie McGettrick 0-2, Michael Whyte, Mark Heron, Rory McCaughey, Liam McCollum, Eoghan Donnelly, Colin Murray 0-1, Ian Galway 1-06, 3 frees, Cathair Bonnar, Fergal McCamphill 0-2, Jack Anderson 0-1, Seamus McLoughney 4-02, Seamus McKillop 1-04, Paul Doole 1-01, Colin O'Neill 0-1, Mark Sidebottom, Paddy Byrne, Danny Hughes, Charlie Dillon, Paul Boyle, Ultan Power, Mark McGinley, Alastair McAllister, Michael Mullan, Nick Nolan, Vincent McCool, Ciaran Nixon, Mark Galway, Paddy Johnson
Ladies Intermediates start with a win Tullylish 2-09 Bredagh 4-09: Report to follow....
U-16 Hurling League Ballycran 4-9 Bredagh 0-2 This was always going to be a difficult league opener against a strong well prepared Ballycran team but having to field without 5 first team regulars made it mission impossible. Bredagh however, as usual showed all their fighting qualities and matched their opponents in many key positions. The game was played in warm sunshine at the magnificently presented McKenna Park and it was Ballycran who raced into an early lead thanks mainly to the heroics of their No.11 Conor Dorrian who knocked over 5 points from play. Michael Magee was moved onto Dorrian and what a job he did as the Ballycran ace failed to score again from play for the remainder of the game. Paddy Woods moved to full back where his ball winning skills and long deliveries were outstanding. Donal Hughes' catching striking and general play in midfield was as good as anything on show from the opposition. He had excellent support in this area from Donal McKegney and Michael Guerin. Michael was Bredagh's only scorer on the day with a well taken point from play in the first half and a 30 meter free in the second. Daniel Higgins had a great game in defence and also when moved to the half forward line where he linked up well with the impressive Damhan Farmer at full forward. Bredagh trailed 1-7 to 0-1 at half time and although the second half performance was better the leaking of 3 goals in this period meant Ballycran ran out comfortable winners on the scoreboard. Thanks to the U14s Jack Holywood, Ciaran McFarland and Conrad Quinn who came in at late notice and played well against such tough opposition. This result highlights the need to get a full panel training and available for games and that being the case we can no doubt compete with the Ards teams in this league. Team Jack Holywood, Ben McCaughey, Daniel Higgins, Conrad Quinn, Pearce Leitch, Paddy Woods, James Cormican, Donal Hughes, Donal McKegney, Michael Magee, Michael Guerin 0-2, Ciaran Kelly, Ciaran McFarland, Damhan Farmer and Ciaran Fitzpatrick
Boy's U-12 winning start and next week's game The U 12’s got their season off to a winning start with a very competitive win over Castlewellan, in Castlewellan last Sunday. Bredagh got off to a great start with 3 points in quick succession from Niall Fitzpatrick, Nicky McCafferty and Conor Costello, before Castlewellan got off the mark. Then Niall Kelly scored a thunderbolt of a goal to set Bredagh on their way. This was the first of Niall’s hat trick of goals in a man of the match performance. The Bredagh team showed great passion and determination against a very competitive Castlewellan outfit, who due to circumstances included 5 members of the Bredagh panel. This was a great start to the season for the under 12’s although many tougher tasks lie ahead. All the squad should be congratulated on a great overall performance. Particular mention to Patrick McCarney, Ciaran Foster, Thomas Gallen, Oran Devlin and Donal McLaughlin who played extremely well for the Castlewllan team who were short on numbers. Final Score Castlewellan 1-2 Bredagh 4-7.
Scores for Bredagh Niall Kelly 3-0, Rory Doyle 1-1, Conor Costello 0-2, Dominic McConville 0-1, Mark Patterson 0-1,Nicky McCafferty 0-1, Niall Fitzpatrick 0-1.

U16 Win Castlewellan 0.5 Bredagh 37
An impressive start to the season with this convincing away victory over All County League opponents Castlewellan. Playing for the first time at this age, Bredagh raced to a commanding half time lead of 2.5 to 3 points. With Jimmy McCaffery proving to be an effective target man at full forward the scores quickly came through Niall Wright (1.1), Donal Hughes (0.1), Conal Devlin (0.3) and fittingly Jimmy himself with a goal just before half time.
Bredagh looked lively all over the field with particularly impressive performances from Donal McKegney, Pearse Leitch, Declan O’Hara, Conal Devlin and Mark Kelly.
A series of substitutions and switches by the management for the second half inevitably disrupted the rhythm of play but scores kept coming through a great goal from the free running Damhan Farmer, a point Frank McGuigan style, from goalkeeper turned full forward Paddy Woods and a final point through Marcus Young. All in all, a very encouraging start and lots for the team management to work on before the start of the season.
