Ladies v L'island

Bredagh Ladies had a comfortable victory against Loughinisland in their first home league match of the season.

Bredagh were boosted by the return from injury of Fionnuala McAtamney and the influential Jacqui Clarke.

A healthy amount of support at Cherryvale, which included our youngest supporter - Paul Og, saw Bredagh take control from the start.

Good ball-winning from the Bredagh half-back and midfield lines, laid the foundation for some good possession football that ensured good supply to the forward line. This supply was converted into a flurry of points from Mairead Guinness, rampant at full-forward, and roaming corner-forward Arlene McCloskey. Orla Smith also went close with a couple of efforts after some incisive runs from half-forward.
As half-time approached, a number of Bredagh goal chances went begging, and at the other end Bredagh conceded a soft goal after confusion in the otherwise rock-solid full-back line. Bredagh responded with several points from Joanne Lavery who also turned provider to lay the ball off to Cera McArdle who added a point to Bredagh's tally.
On the stroke of half-time half-forward Rachel McCallum had to depart the field due to a leg injury; this was a big loss since Rachel had won a lot of possession and set up a number of scores.

Half Time Score: Bredagh 0-9 - Loughinisland 1-0

A reorganisation at half-time saw the introduction of Nell O'Neill and Maria Smylie with Lorraine McCaffrey moving to half-forward and Arlene to centre half-back.
Good defensive work from Bredagh, particularly from Siobhan McCarney, Jacqui Clarke and Jacqui McAllister kept the dangerous Loughinisland attackers at bay.
Jacqui Clarke even took time out from her defensive duties to make a decisive run forward, cutting through the defence to score a great point.
Some good interplay in the forward-line was converted by Nell O'Neill who chipped the goalkeeper for a fine goal.
Loughinisland responded with a classy point from midfield but with Arlene controlling the game from centre half-back, Bredagh never relinquished their control.
Joanne Lavery continued to score long-range points from play and from frees, and Mairead Guinness chipped in with several scores.

Final Score: Bredagh 1-17 - Loughinisland 1-1

Ladies' first win

Bredagh Ladies defeated Downpatrick in their first league match of 2002 in a tough encounter at Downpatrick on Saturday night.

Bredagh were keen to get off to a winning start in the league against an ever-improving Downpatrick team, despite the absence of key players Geraldine Grimley and Fionnuala McAtamney due to injury, and Arlene McCloskey who was representing Ulster in the inter-provincials.

The first half was dominated by defences on both sides with very few chances being created. Downpatrick dominated possession and some woeful Bredagh passing resulted in a lot of pressure on the Bredagh half-back line and full-back line.
Some tenacious defending, particularly from Helen McGale and Maura McArdle, kept Downpatrick at bay. Several vital points from Mairead Guinness at full-forward gave Bredagh a slender lead approaching half-time.
This lead was eroded when a Downpatrick 50 ended up in the Bredagh net despite the best efforts of Jacqui Clarke, who was stand-in goalie due to being injured. Just before half-time Downpatrick lost one of their key players as their midfielder Bronagh McCurry unfortunately twisted her knee and had to be stretchered off.

Half Time Score Downpatrick 1-1 - Bredagh 0-4

After a half-time rocket from joint-manager Cathy Gallagher, Bredagh fought hard in the second half to keep in touch with a determined Downpatrick side.
With Downpatrick on top, some excellent blocking and tackling in the Bredagh defence, marshalled well by Jacqui in goals, kept the Downpatrick tally down.
When a Bredagh goal chance went begging, things didn't look good but everyone kept plugging away. The turning point of the match came when Lorraine McCaffrey at full-forward chased down a Downpatrick clearance
and laid it off to Joanne Lavery, on her return from Oz, who then won and scored a vital free to put Bredagh level. Additional points from Lorraine McCaffrey, Martina McCafferty and Joanne Lavery put 3 points
between the teams. With the midfield tiring, more stout Bredagh defending and surging runs from the energetic Jacqui McAllister ensured that Bredagh made it home with a 3-point victory.

Final Score Downpatrick 1-3 - Bredagh 0-9

Jacqui Clarke, Ciara Gallagher, Siobhan McCarney, Helen McGale, Jacqui McAllister, Maura McArdle, Niamh, Cera McArdle, Joanne Lavery, Orla Smyth, Rachel McCallum, Martina McCafferty, Lorraine McCaffrey,
Mairead Guinness, Maria Smylie. Subs Grainne.

Congratulations to Arlene for her part in the Ulster success at the inter-provincials - well done Clucks!

Daniel the Hero!
MONDAY - Bredagh reach semi-finals of the St Galls P5 Tournament!!!
What a day! What a performance by the Bredagh heroes!

24 teams entered this prestigious competition and Bredagh made the last four with a fantastic display by Daniel Nolan and the rest of the boys. From the unbeatable Seamus McCloskey in goals to the long-kicking Ciaran Fitzgerald at full-back, from 'it's mine' Michael Doran in defence to the hard-tackling Ben McCaughey in midfield, from the 'man of the tournament' Daniel Nolan to the elusive Declan Magee, and from the so improved Ben Scullion to the point-scoring hero Timothy Durkan, Bredagh had a team to be very, very proud of.

Managed by Damian McCloskey, the boys lost narrowly to St Galls in the group stage, but qualified after beating Rossa and St Brigids. In the quarter-finals, Daniel Nolan was untouchable and Timothy Durkan kicked the winning point with the last kick.

Unbelievably, Bredagh were in the semi-finals, again against St Galls, and they led by four points with a wonderful goal by Daniel Nolan and a wonderful point by Ben McCaughey. St Galls pulled away at the finish, but what a performance by the boys to get that far.

BREDAGH P5 HEROES: Seamus McCloskey, Ciaran & Niall Fitzgerald, Michael Doran, Daniel Nolan, Ben McCaughey, Ben Scullion, Timothy Durkan, Declan Magee, Mark Quinn, Andrew McAllister.
