Bredagh news in May 2004

New Banner & Badge

Bredagh has a superb new banner thanks to the Woods family. As you can see, it was used to great effect in the parade at the Ulster Féile in Ballycastle on May 1. There are more pictures and reports from both the Ulster Féile and the Co Down Féile in the U-14 hurling section of this website.

This is the new club crest, which will be on the track-suits, polo shirts and kit bags. It retains the theme of a harp which has been the Bredagh badge for more than thirty years, but it also incorporates a hurl, sliothar and a football to reflect the current aspects of our club. The harp in the new crest is actually based on the harp of Irish warrior Brian Boru from the 14th century - honest! It has been designed by Fionnuala Nixon, head of Art at the Loreto Grammar School in Omagh. She also designed the Millennium jerseys for Bredagh and Cooke in 1999, and one of the Tyrone jerseys around the same time.

WHO'D BE A REFEREE?
Bredagh is urgently looking for a club member to come forward to be a qualified juvenile referee. The situation is urgent because a new Co Down rule states that clubs will be financially punished if they do not have a juvenile referee. So, if anyone has an inclination to at least go on the course to become a referee, please let a committee member know as soon as possible. This appeal also applies to hurling/camogie as there is a dire need there as well for new refs.

St Michaels Camogs

Maebh Holywood and Roisin McAllister, joint captains of St Michael's PS camogie team, winners of the Belfast section INTO/GAA mini sevens on Thursday May 6, receiving their trophy from Monica Moran, Cumann na mBunscol Camogie co-ordinator. St Michael's, along with St Colman's Lambeg (hurling), St Peter's (girls' gaelic football) and Holy Trinity (boys' gaelic football).

The team made history as it was St Michael's first win in 30 years in girls sport. The school has been playing camogie for two years and it was their first time entering the Cumann na mBunscoil competition. Fourteen teams took part and St.Michael's beat Holy Rosary, St Catherine's, St Kieran's in the semi- final and the Bunscoil in the final. The Bunscoil were the favourites but St.Michael's played tough and skilful camogie. Catherine Moylan let nothing past her in goals, while in defence, Rachel Graham and Aoife Jackson put in a great effort, ably assisted by Roisin Mc Alllister who cleared everything in sight. At midfield Maebh Hollywood and Peita McAllister controlled play with Pieta scoring a goal and being named 'Woman of the Match'. In the forwards, Alice Donaldson was skilful and accurate, supplying plenty of ball to Nikki Pauley (1-0), Lenane Melotte and Rachel McCann.
St Michael's then represented Belfast in the All County Antrim Finals of the INTO/GAA Mini Sevens on Tuesday May 11 in Corrigan Park. They reached the Final and were unlucky to lose to Ballycastle. Also, two girls are to be selected as part of the Ulster squad to play at half-time at the All-Ireland Hurling Final in Croke Park in September.

First Trophy of Season

A great performance by the Bredagh 'B' team saw them collect the club's first silverware of the season as winners of the Plate at the St Galls May Day Tournament on Monday.

Captain Michael Cassidy proudly raised aloft the trophy at the end of an eventful day. The 'B' side won all five of their group games and then were too good for St Brigids 'B' in the decider.

THERE'S MORE PICTURES & DETAILS IN THE U-8 SECTION OF THE WEBSITE - thanks to Kieran Kelly and Pat McLaughlin for the pictures
