AQUINAS WIN FINAL

Shane King with James Johnston, Paul Alexander and Maria McCourt from the South Belfast News.

Aquinas Grammar School made history in dramatic style by scoring three late goals to snatch the inaugural South Belfast News Senior Schools Cup from St Pats Knock on Friday afternoon at Cherryvale. Going into the last ten minutes, a goal by St Pats wing-back John Gerard Doran gave his team a nine-point lead. But Aquinas hit back with goals from Ryan Mercer, Sean McCreesh and James Johnston, before Player of the Tournament Paul Alexander pointed in the last minute to put Aquinas ahead. Tournament Official and Down player Shane King singled out St Pats' Chris Whelan for praise. 'That was the best full-back display I have seen in a long time. He didn't deserve to be on the losing side'. A crowd of 200 attended the final.

MATCH REPORTS
GAME ONE: Aquinas 2-7 St Joes 3-4

This derby match had passion, enthusiasm, commitment and unfortunately some poor discipline. It ended in a draw at Cherryvale on Wednesday afternoon, May 1st. It was the first game on the Senior Schools League, but St Josephs will be without two players for the next game after they were dismissed. Aquinas took a 3-0 lead with fine scores by Paul McCorry, but St Josephs levelled at 3-3. A goal by Thomas Kelly had Aquinas in front at the break. In a heated second-half, Aquinas deserved great credit for holding their discipline in the face of poor tackling and retaliation. A Paul McGlade goal, all the way from a 45 metre free, had them in front, but two goals from Gerard Davidson and one cracker from Karl McKavanagh ensured a share of the spoils. McKavanagh soloed and dodged tackles before smashing the ball to the net for the best score of the contest.
AQUINAS TEAM: Sean O'Rourke, Paddy Cassidy, Paddy Higgins, Vincent Murray, Ben Fitzsimons 0-1, Paul McGlade 1-1, Kevin Harte, Conal Mallory 0-1, Paul Alexander (c), Chris Dolan, James Johnson, Ronan McLaughlin 0-1, Paul McCorry 0-2, Thomas Kelly 1-0, Ryan Mercer.

GAME TWO - Aquinas 6-7 St Pats Knock 4-5
An amazing five-goal blitz turned imminent defeat into surprising victory for Aquinas over St Pats Knock in this week’s South Belfast News Senior Schools Mini-League.

Trailing by 4-5 to 1-7, midfielder and captain Paul Alexander (pictured above right) inspired the comeback with a couple of goals and before St Pats knew what had hit them, Aquinas had scored five goals in five minutes. Earlier, midfielder Ryan Hanna scored two goals for St Pats as they led by nine points at the break. Chris Whelan (1-2), Conor Boyd (1-1), and Raymond Grant (0-2) were their other scorers, while Sean McCreesh and captain Conor Brown also played well.

GAME THREE - St Pats 4-6 St Josephs 0-12
A hat-trick of goals by John Gerard Doran and another from Ryan Hanna turned probable defeat into an excellent victory for St Pats at Cherryvale. Trailing by 0-8 to 0-3 at half-time, they looked to have no answer to the midfield dominance of Sean O'Donnell and Stephen Black, until Doran and Hanna hit the target. Doran's second and third goals came at the end of well-worked moves, while Hanna used his height to get to a high ball for the fourth goal. However, the real hero for St Pats was their goalkeeper Chris Magowan with a string of superb saves, especially in the first-half.
ST PATS KNOCK: Chris Magowan, Conor Geogeghan, Chris Tanney, Mikey Gilmore, Conor McCarthy, Conor Browne, JG Doran 3-0, Ryan Hanna 1-1, Sean McCreesh, Sean Molloy, Raymond Grant 0-2, Sean Ennis 0-2, Stephen McGettrick, James Loughrey 0-1, Jamie Grant. Subs: Niall Morris, Chris Murphy, Paul Milligan, Conor Flynn.
ST JOE'S: David Steele, Ciaran Bowen, Kyle Morrison, Kevin McDowell, Thomas Rice, Patrick Turley, Conor McCaughey, Sean O'Donnell 0-4, Stephen Black 0-4, Declan Noble 0-1, Sam Cunningham, Carl McKavanagh 0-2, Michael Lagan, Michael McVeigh 0-1, James Griffen. Subs: Declan Moran, Anthony Dobbin, Denis Doyle, Warren Irvine, Paddy Joe Black.

GAME FOUR - Aquinas 2-8 St Joes 3-4
Aquinas became the first team to book a place in the Final with a one-point win over St Joes in poor conditions. They had to come from seven points down to win, with Paul Alexander kicking the deciding score from a free. St Joes led at half-time thanks to brilliant goals from Karl McKavanagh and Michael McVeigh, but they failed to score in the last quarter as Aquinas took control.

GAME FIVE - Aquinas 2-4 St Pats 4-6
St Pats Knock beat Aquinas and so joined them in the Final of the League on Wednesday, June 12th. The decider is nicely set up with both schools having one win each during the Qualifiers. Both teams were understrength because of exams, and St Pats made the better start. They led at half-time by 1-4 to 0-2 and finished the job with three goals in the second-half.
St Pats Scorers: Ryan Hanna 1-3, John Gerard Doran 1-2, Sean Molloy 1-0, Conor Boyle 1-0, James Loughrey 0-1.

GAME SIX - St Joes 6-6 St Pats 4-7
St Joes recorded their first win in the last League game against an understrength St Pats team. They scored six goals to end on a high, while the St Pats players on goalscoring form ahead of the Final were Conor Boyd (2) and Raymond Grant.

HORY ROSARY CHAMPIONS!

Thanks to the South Belfast News for the photo - it is one of many in the paper out now.

Congratulations Holy Rosary PS and their Teacher/Coach John Cahill on winning the inaugural Trophy with a sparkling display in the sunshine at Cherryvale. Team captain Cathal Doyle lifted the Trophy and the Player of the Tournament Award.

Cathal started the scoring with a fine point and he went on to reach a personal tally of 1-2. Paddy McGahan top-scored with a hat-trick of goals (making him the competition's overall top goalscorer), while 'Deeko' Moreland grabbed two and Matthew McAllister scored 1-2. But St Michaels were not anywhere near as bad as the scoreline suggests. Aidan Connor blasted a great free to the top corner of the net, and a second-half penalty just shaved the wrong side of the post. Emmett Costello, Rory Johnston and Donal McKegney fought to the end, but their team had no luck. Best for Holy Rosary - Jamie Cleary, Pearse Leitch, Conal O'Neill and the steadying influence of Cathal Doyle.

After the game, both teams collected their medals from Gerard Magee of the South Belfast News. Competition co-ordinator Jerome Quinn from Bredagh GAC thanked the sponsors and coaches, and complimented the players on their improvement during the Schools League. 'Rapid progress has been made in the first year of the competition. Hopefully next year, it will be even better'.

MATCH REPORTS
GAME ONE - Holy Rosary 4-6 St Michaels 0-3

A little bit of history was made when the first game was played in the new mini-League at Cherryvale on Tuesday afternoon, April 30th. Holy Rosary won the contest with goals from Andrew McCurry, Paddy McGahan, Liam McManus and Damien Moreland. Holy Rosary captain Cathal Doyle was the Man of the Match. He caught the ball from the opening throw-in and soloed through to score the first point. St Michaels hit back with points from Sean Irwin and Cormac White, after good work by Michael Magee and Ronan McGarry. Ronan got St Michaels other point, while Paddy McGahan got two points for Holy Rosary. Goalkeeper Ryan Johnston also stopped a goalbound effort from Cormac White. All in all, a super effort by all the players with excellent gaelic football skills displayed by Emmett Costello, Donal McKegney, Matthew Mullan, Conal Mahon, Pearse Leitch and Matthew McAllister.

GAME TWO - St Matthews 3-4 Holy Rosary 4-1

The most exciting game in the League so far ended in a dramatic draw on Tuesday afternoon. The lead changed hands several times before Paul Turley of St Matthews levelled the scores near the finish. The Short Strand boys had opened with a goal by Nicky Ward and points from Seamus McDonnell and Conor McDowell, but Holy Rosary dug deep and replied with 1-1 from Cathal Doyle. St Matthews stretched their lead with a goal by McDonnell and a point from Ward, but a volleyed goal by Paddy McGahan had Holy Rosary only two points behind at the break, 2-3 to 2-1.

In the second half, Bredagh man Ryan Johnston (pictured above) inspired the light blues despite a leg injury, while Pearse Leitch and Liam McAree were sensational in defence. Holy Rosary soaked up some pressure and hit St Matthews on the break with superb goals from Marty Maguire and Francie McMahon. St Matthews hit the post and were denied by brave goalkeeper Michael Murray, but finally broke through with a goal and a point from Paul Turley to end the contest level.

GAME THREE - St Matthews 7-1 St Michaels 5-3
Never mind Tyrone-Armagh at Clones because this game at Cherryvale had everything you could want to see! Given the driving rain and wind, the performance of both teams was quite sensational. From the first whistle, St Michaels won the throw-in and had the ball in the net within ten seconds through Aidan Connor. Nicky Ward equalised with the first of his three goals for St Matthews. Not to be outdone, Man of the Match Sean Irwin scored the first of FOUR goals he got for St Michaels! At half-time, St Michaels led by a point, but goals from Michael McDermott and Paul Turley had St Matthews in front soon after. Then came three in-a-row from Irwin as St Michaels took the lead. In a frantic finish, goals by McDermott and Turley sealed the win. Best for St Michaels: Michael Magee, Donal McKegney, Emmett Costello, Matthew Mullan, Cormac White and Conor Magee.

GAME FOUR - St Michaels 2-2 Holy Rosary 2-0
History was made when St Michaels won their first match, thanks to two brilliant goals from Sean Irwin. His left-foot piledrivers came early in the game but there was also some brave goalkeeping by Michael Johnston in the second-half to keep Holy Rosary out. Their goals were both scored by P5 player Ciaran Fitzpatrick. St Michaels' points were scored by Aidan Connor and Cormac White.
ST MICHAELS HISTORY-MAKERS: Michael Johnston, Michael McAllister, Michael Magee, Cormac White, Matthew Mullan, Donal McKegney, Conal Hughes, Paddy Molloy, Matthew Cunningham, Ronan McGarry, Sean Irwin, Emmett Costello, Conor Magee, Ben Horner, Aidan Connor, Sean McFarland, Eoin Lyttle, Nathan Ryan.

GAME FIVE - Holy Rosary 6-8 St Matthews 2-2
Three first-half goals from Ryan Johnston helped Holy Rosary book their place in next Tuesday's Final against the winners of Friday's last League game between St Michaels and St Matthews (3.10, Cherryvale). Another goal from Paddy McGahan and points from Cathal Doyle, Ciaran Fitzpatrick and Andrew McCurry had Holy Rosary well in control at the break, though Bobby Bell did hit them on the break with a goal for St Matthews. In the second-half, Seamus McDonnell sent a piledriver to the roof of the net and there were points from Paul Turley and Jamie Curran for St Matthews, but Holy Rosary won the day with two more goals from McGahan and points from Kaelan Devlin and Francis McMahon.
