Bredagh news in September 2002

Reserves on track
Bredagh reserves kept on track for a play off place in the East Down Reserve League with a deserved away win at Castlewellan on Sunday.

Bredagh started well with an early point from Conor O'Keefe, but Castlewellan settled and raced in to a one point lead. Things weren't looking good when Castlewellan were awarded a penalty after Eunan O'Brien hauled down his man in the square. Castlewellan blasted the penalty wide and Bredagh were still in touch. Almost within in minutes at the other end Bredagh were back in front when Conall Donnelly got on the end of a ball from Chris Hannon to score a goal that put Bredagh back in front. However, the run into half time was all Castlwellan and only the heroics of man-of-the-match goalkeeper Danny Tracey kept Bredagh in the match. Castlewellan won another penalty which produced a great save from Danny. This was then followed by another great save from a shot at point blank range. Bredagh counted themselves lucky to be going in at the break one point ahead.

Half-time Bredagh 1-3 Castlewellan 0-5

The second half was tense stuff with early points from Castlewellan seeing them take the lead for only the second time in the game. Then disaster struck. A Castlewellan player got on the end of a high-dropping ball and punched it to the Bredagh net. The referee ignored Bredagh's pleas for a square ball and Bredagh were left trailing by four. But Bredagh dug deep and their midfield began to win more possession and a great point by Brian Hegarty was followed by a strange Bredagh goal. A Brian Hegarty shot rebounded off the post and was caught by Conall Donnelly. His shot was saved but somehow the ball ended up in the net with the help of a Castlewellan defender. After that Bredagh dominated with points by Darragh Mallon, Paddy Finnegan, Conor O'Keefe and Conall Donnelly. In the final 10 minutes Castlewellan attacked time and again only thawrted by some excellent defending particularly from Paul Doran and Mick Tunney in half back. In the end Bredagh ran out winners by three points but can count themselves lucky as Castlewellan were guilty of missing two simple frees in the final ten minutes of the match.

U-10s Super Season
Banbridge U-10 Tournament, Sept 14th - RESULTS
Bredagh ended their competitive season at Banbridge by beating Warrenpoint, Loughinisland and Aghaderg but were desperately unlucky to lose to Burren in the Semi-finals. It was a heartbreaking one-point defeat. The boys were magnificent and came so close to beating Burren and very possibly winning the whole competition, which was for Down clubs only. In fact, Bredagh outplayed Burren for most of the game and scored nearly twice as many times. We got ten points but Burren broke away and scored killer goals. Read all about it and the U-10s Super Season in the U-10 Section.

MATCH REPORTS

Paul Doran took the U-12 boys up to Carryduff and beat their B team by ten points, 7-3 to 4-2 - a good finish to the season. It's been a long time since our club has had as many victories over our neighbours - at U-10, U-12 and U-16 levels. Admittedly, the U-12 game was against their B team, but we also led them at half-time in a Championship game, and the crucial point is that we competed very well with Carryduff in just about every game during the year - a good sign of progress. There is a FULL REPORT IN THE U-12 Section and on the whole season.

PLAY-OFF FOR EAST DOWN SECTION B U-18 LEAGUE TITLE - Bredagh lose by four points to Kilclief - Sunday, September 8th, at Teconnaught
The boys had no luck - Shane Matthews went off with a broken arm after fifteen minutes and their keeper saved what looked a certain goal. Still, Paul Alexander scored a goal to bring us level, Sean Coleman played a stormer and the team was presented with Shields for finishing as Runners-up in the League. At the Presentation, the comment was made that 'this Bredagh team has a good future in Minor football'. They led the League all season and only lost out in a Play-off, and this with a young team for Minors.

A dramatic finish saw Bredagh end their League season with a point at Downpatrick on Thursday, Sep 5th. It means we finish third, just one point outside the medals (Carryduff beat Drumaness on the same night to finish top), but a magnificent performance by one and all. No team beat us twice during the season. Star players on the night were Eddie Burns and Conor McDaid. See below for the current League Table and the U-16 Section for a full report on the match and the season.

U-16s IN COUNTY SQUAD
Bredagh players Kieran Murray, James Johnston and Brian Willigan were 'very impressive' at the Down U-16 trials in Mayobridge. Murray was 'good in possession and never gives up', while Johnston was a revelation at full-forward.

Ladies Champ'ship News
Bredagh Ladies survived the preliminary round of the championship by defeating Annaclone on Saturday night, despite a lacklustre performance.

The championship semi-final is at Cherryvale at 6:30 this Sunday 8th September so come along and cheer the girls against Castlewellan.

U-14s Strong Finish
Last League game, Monday Sept 2nd.
Well done the lads and Frank McKenna for winning this last League game at bottom club Drumaness. Eoin 'Francis' Costello scored one of the goals, and Paul Boyd scored his tenth goal of the season in a win that was well-deserved on the night and on the efforts put in all year. Good to finish on a high note - all League games played and a total of 23 games played - the most in the club for any team. John McKenna finishes as Top Scorer with a total of 8-18 and Aidan O'Neill is Player of the Month for August. See U-14 Section for Match Report.
