Hurlers on Ulster U16 panel.
Paddy Woods and Donal Hughes represented the Ulster U16 hurlers on Sunady in a hurling/shinty compromise rules game against a southern Scotland select. Paddy lined out at full back and Donal at right half forward and both can be proud of their performances. Paddy was kept busy as the Sotland team were strong and there was plenty of action around the Ulster goals particularly in the first half when the Scots were wind assisted. Donal scored a fine long range point in the second half but it was not enough to prevent Scotland winning the match. Ulster then feilded a second team against Scotland (North) and again the Highlanders proved too strong which meant Scotland took the series. The matches were played at Lamb Dearghs pitch and the very wet underfoot conditions seemed to favour the Scottish lads. Their ground striking with the longer shinty sticks was very impressive as they were able to drive over points from distances of 40 to 50 meters. This was a great experience for the 2 Bredagh boys and congratulations to them on their selection.

Ladies 7s
After sabbatical from last year’s Bredagh 7’s the belles return to action this Saturday.

According to Siobhan McCarney, Bredagh Ladies was founded in 1893 and to date Siobhan is the only player still playing. In the early days Bredagh Ladies had a strict policy of only allowing those who lived within the City Bus zone to play for the mighty Belles.

They soon realised that to have any chance of winning they’d need to let the country bumpkins in to show them how to play football. To help the Country Bumpkins to adapt to the new city surroundings the Bredagh house in Rushfield Ave was bought. Once they got used to the electricity, running water and television they got down to serious training for Bredagh.

So with the new format for this years 7’s lets find out who really has the talent in Bredagh ladies.

Country bumpkins V Here’s me city slickers

Country bumpkins panel

Captained by the only youthful squad member Niamh Gallagher, the country bumpkins will be relying on their vintage pedigree to carry them through this game. Their chances of winning could be severely hampered by the Barcelona preparation party on Friday night!!!

  1. Lorraine “faster than the speed of light” McCaffery
  2. Cass ‘ive got Rory’s right foot and Raymie’s left foot’ Gallagher
  3. Arlene ‘I wish I had Rory’s right foot and Raymie’s left foot’ McCloskey
  4. Niamh “dolly bird united” Gallagher
  5. Roisin ‘Geek’ Dooher
  6. Joanne “the bomber” Corrigan

  9. Grainne ‘Identity crisis, am I from Derry or Antrim’ O’Connell
  10. Fionnuala “I really think I am Pasty Cline” McAtamney
  11. Maeliosa Hardy
  12. Cathy ‘If it’s the Championship I’ll turn up’ Gallagher

Here’s me city slickers panel

The Here’s me city slickers will be captained by the talented and home grown Bredagh Belle Lisa Kelly.

With a distinct youthful advantage the Here’s me city slickers will be out to prove a point that they probably could have won a championship without the country bumpkins.

With the legendary Bredagh belle Siobhan McCarney in charge of the Here’s me city slickers its sure to be a titanic battle, and there is the added advantage that Mccarney can pack the ball into the Subaru and drive it from one end of the pitch to the other.
Jenny might not be a Belfast city slicker either but being from Louth she qualifies as a Here’s me.

Manager: Siobhan “Schumacher” McCarney sponsored by Spar.

  2. Jamie ‘my Lasagne is the best’ Willighan

Charity Sevens - Next Saturday
Peter McGinnity, Paddy Doherty, The Gunner Brady, Nudie Hughes, Joe Kernan, Enda Gormley. All former greats and legends of Ulster GAA. Role models for the youth of today.

That is until the 20th of October when Bredagh hosts it’s annual Charity Sevens tournament at Cherryvale.

Names of the past stand aside, the young of the Ormeau Road are about to discover new heroes. Players with style and finesse, charm and good looks. Players of the calibre of Paddy Finnegan, Donal Durkan, Marty Hannity, Sean Armstrong, Walter, Barry “the Afghan” Houston and Hugh “no one is sure what he does for a living” Daly. Soon to be household names.

The nominated charity this year is the Special Olympics Ulster Division. This is a charity with which Bredagh have strong links, former chairman and current senior player Liam McGarry being one of the most active volunteers locally. All proceeds (voluntary) will be greatly appreciated.

The competition this year will be played on a county basis. The Bredagh club have always had strong associations with other counties, indeed several of the founding members of the club originated from Fermanagh, Armagh, Tyrone and mid/south Co Down. While many of the people of Ormeau Road retain connections with their family roots outside Belfast, Bredagh and south Belfast has become their home. The Bredagh Sevens this year is a celebration of both. Teams and managers participating are as follows:-

Co. Down Liam McGarry
Co. Tyrone Paddy Finnegan
Co. Derry Oliver McWilliams
Co. Antrim Kevin Muldoon
Co. Armagh Conall Donnelly
Co. Fermanagh and the rest of Ireland Shane Donnelly
Bredagh U21s Sean Armstrong

Although a departure from previous years, our format is considered necessary due to objections from the majority of participates to playing with people from Derry on the basis of communication difficulties and general hygiene.

Review of the Teams

Co. Down (playing in Black)

Expected to be tournament favourites, the dirty tricks campaign has already commenced with manager Liam McGarry happy to do anything to secure the services of players and undermine the challenges of other teams.

While Liam believes he can call upon any player registered for the club, the reality is the success of his team will directly correspond to his personal popularity.

The team has an uncompromising backbone with players such as Mark Robinson and Goal-a-game Gilmore. This strength is nicely complimented with the grace and scoring potential of Conal Toland, Donal and Marty Durkan, Lorenzo McMullan, Charlie Pat McCartan and Marty Hannity.

Co. Tyrone (playing in white)

Despite the anticipated blanket defence and negative football typical of the county, this team is one of the stronger contenders on the day although discipline may let them down. Also beware of any female supporters.

Under the stewardship of the man who taught Peter Canavan everything he knows, this team can call upon the Harte brothers, recently returned from injury Raymond Gormley, the tenacious Barry Houston and former Bredagh full back Ciaran Kelly. It is also hoped that Johnnie Kelly will make his comeback from injury.

Co. Derry (playing in red)

Well sur, what can younes say about these here wans. Pure class sur, pure class.

Where does one start? Ollie McWilliams, Paul Bradley, Eugene Irwin, Mark Diamond, Paddy Heaney, Enda Gormley, Russell, Walter. The list goes on.

Although all quality footballers and all more than likely related, this team is of suspect temperament. Expect petty parochial and generations old family rivalries to reawaken over the course of the day. The club have enlisted the help of Pat McEneaney for the tournament to deal with the likely verbal pressure from the Derry squad.

Note from Bredagh Organising Committee – the minimum height requirement has been lowered, as a one off gesture, to 5 ft for the Derry team.

Co. Antrim (playing in yellow)

Managed by Kevin Muldoon because he thinks Rosetta is in Co Antrim. This team should prove to be a strong contender. Frank McKenna will be available to play for Antrim despite his denial at ever having crossed the bridge. The Andersonstown News has provided us with photographic evidence of a young Frank togged out for a west Belfast club team sporting huge side-burns. Yes, he also had lots of hair and could have passed for a sixth Jackson.

This team can also call upon Thomas White who has the rare distinction of playing for both Antrim and Down during a long and successful playing career. Other players expected to feature are current Antrim Senior Manager, Jody Gormley, Conor McDaid, Chris Savage and Henry Deazley. Expect some transfer activity between Liam and Kevin in the run up to the big day.

Co Armagh (playing in orange)

Total football.

Or so they think in Armagh. Figure hugging stream-lined jerseys, bulging biceps, six packs.

Perhaps the reality will differ slightly.

Managed by Conall Donnelly (may be able to get hold of some tight jerseys but has complained at the short notice for biceps and six packs), Armagh have a strong backbone in Peadar Doyle, Mickey Curran, Hughie Daly, Rory McDonnell, Chris Gribben and Kieran Boyle. Expect a direct and elbow ridden style of football and with a number of north Armagh men on board, a plentiful supply of (purely medicinal) tonic wine.

Co. Fermanagh and the rest of Ireland (playing in green)

Everyone favourite other county. Unlikely to feature in the knock out stages, Fermanagh is simply here to make up the numbers., Managed by the slow and ageing Shane Donnelly, the team will call on a small pool of players including the O’Keefe brothers, Paul McEvoy, Michael and Eamon Tunney, Rory McCaughey, Brian Rice, Mick Burke, David Brady, Brian Caffrey, Eunan Donnelly, Paul Brewster, Barry Owens, Marty McGrath and Ken from Ballina.

These guys won’t win a game.

The Under 21s

Put away the shaving kits, here comes the U21s. Managed by senior goalkeeper and part time sports journalist Sean Armstrong, the team should bring mobility and attacking flair to the tournament.

Sean is joined by other senior panellists, Niall Devlin, Niall Boyle, Mathew Hollywood and John McKenna who will be ably supported by Kevin Briggs, Joe Steele and the McElroy twins. There have also been unconfirmed sightings of Conal O’Neill and Tim Shannon, both of whom are expected to make a long awaiting return to the game.

Hurlers march on!
Mullahoran (Cavan) 0-07 Bredagh (Down) 2-10

Bredagh eased themselves into an Ulster JHC semi-final spot when they ran out convincing winners over Mullahoran at Kingscourt, Cavan on Sunday. The south Belfast gaels started this game in a blistering pace rattling over 0-3 through Doole, McCamphill and a sweet Donnelly point before the Cavan champions had time to settle. Mullahoran replied with a pointed free from Anthony Sheridan but when the Cavan netminder, Darren Sheridan, spilled a longe-range effort from Bredagh's Anderson, McKillop was quickest to react notching the first of his two majors on the day. Bredagh had shown enough hurling superiorty in the opening quarter to signal an eventual victory but Mullahoran weren't giving up without a fight as Paul and Anthony Sheridan added further points to close the gap to three before an Ian Galway '65 and a close-in pointed free from the same player left five in it at half-time 1-05 to 0-03

Mullahoran started the second-half in determined mood with Brady and Dalton firing over minors to leave only a puck in it. Galway replied with a long range free but the turning point came in the 40th minute when Galway's delivery into the large square was palmed to the net by full-forward McKillop. This score drove Bredagh on as Donnelly, McCamphill and McLoughney tagged on further points to close out the game. In the final minutes Mullahoran concentrated on majors but the Bredagh defence led by man-of-the-match Danny Hughes together with keeper McMullan and full-back Whyte held out to return a clean sheet on the day.

This was a major improvement on Bredagh's last outing when they were lucky to squeeze past Portadown, the defence was back to it's brilliant best with the return of Hughes and Dillon from injury, McMullan was faultless as usual in goal and was well protected by Whyte and Heron at the back. Bredagh's strongest line was at half-back led by Hughes with excellent support from captain, Liam McCollum and Ali McAllister. Cormac Hughes and McGinley replaced Heron and Dillon at half-time both putting on sterling performances especially from Hughes who will no doubt give management a headache when selecting the starting line-up come the semi-final.

At midfield Galway was as accurate as ever from the placed ball with his partner Gilmore covering every blade of grass as usual. The half-forward line of Donnelly, McCamphill and Anderson played well scoring 0-4 between them with Anderson unlucky not to have registered a major as he saw his pile-driver come back off the bar. The inside line of McLoughney, McKillop and Doole all made the scoresheet but it would be fair to say the trio were not firing on all cylinders but hopefully they can cut loose when it matters in the semi-final. In the final quarter subs McCaughey, Bonnar and McAfee all came on to good effect.

Coach Rory Galway saw an improvement on the previous week but said "our performance today was just ok, we are still making too many elementary mistakes and taking the wrong options, we will need another big improvement if we are going to stay with Setanta who beat us out of sight in an Ulster league match at the start of the season -the extra week gives us a chance to hone our stickwork which we should benefit from".

The Ulster semi-final against Setanta (Donegal) that was scheduled for next Sunday the 14th has been postponed to the 21st October due to some of the Setanta's players involvement on the Ireland shinty team. The prize for the winners will be a run out on Ulster finals day at Casement Park against the winners of Armoy (Antrim) and Naomh Colmcille (Tyrone).

Panel and Scorers: Lorenzo McMullan, Mark Heron, Michael Whyte, Charlie Dillon, Liam McCollum (capt), Danny Hughes, Alistair McAllister, Ian Galway0-4, 3f, 1 '65, William Gilmore, Eoghan Donnelly 0-2, Fergal McCamphill 0-2, Jack Anderson, Seamus McLoughney 0-1, Seamus McKillop 2-0, Paul Doole 0-1, Cormac Hughes, Mark McGinley, Rory McCaughey, Cathair Bonnar, Matthew McAfee, Mark Sidebottom, Brian Connolly, Ultan Power, David Brady, Vincent McCool, Colin O'Neill, Mark Galway.

Well done Tim
Congratulations to Tim Durkan on winning the skills competition at yesterday's county final, a magnificent achievement!

U16 hurling notice

U16 hurling championship
Bredagh breezed into the semi final of the Under 16 hurling Championship with this overwhelming victory over a weak Carryduff team on Saturday evening. It did take Bredagh 5 minutes to settle but once Michael Guerin opened the scoring with a pointed free the scores began to flow and midway through the first half the game was over as a contest. Bredagh were solid in all departments and had many stars. Michael Guerin took the Man of the Match award with a superb display at midfield scoring a personal tally of 1-6. Donal Hughes was also on fire topscoring from centre forward with 2-5 all from play. Michael Magee covered every blade of the big Carryduff pitch and was rewarded for his endeavours in the second half when he swept in from the left for a stunning goal. Ben McCaughey playing his first match in attack hammered in 2 great goals and Ryan Curran who only took up the game this year contributed 1-1 and looks to have a bright future. In defence the half back line of Daniel Higgins, Donal McKegney and Matthew Mullan were outstanding and rarely was this line breached by the Carryduff men. Anything that did get through was expertly dealt with by Paddy Woods and his corner men James Cormican and Conall Mulholland. In fact the defence were in such a mean mood that keeper Jack Holywood was totally redundant not having a single shot for the entire game.

Second half
At half time leading 5-8 to 0-0 the full forward line were replaced by Danny Robinson, Niall Irwin and Caolan Devlin all from the U14s and just fresh from last weeks successfull trip to Mayfield (Cork). They piled on the misery for the Carryduff defence with Danny Robinson scoring 2 goals. The young Carryduff team must be given credit for sticking to the task right to the final whistle and no doubt they will be back stronger next season. For Bredagh its on to the semi final on Saturday 6th October where they meet Liatriom , again away from home. This will be a much sterner test and the boys must reproduce this form if they are to progess to the final.

U14 Camógie League
Bredagh 5-04 Portaferry 0-0: Bredagh qualified out of their league section in this specially arranged play-off to decide who will go ahead to meet An Ríocht in the county league semi-final. This was a considerably better performance by the Belfast girls than their poor showing in Portaferry the previous month. On this occasion the girls in maroon were always in control, leading 3-02 to no score at half time. Once again there were a wide range of scorers with Rebecca Holywood scoring two goals and Shannon Murray getting a third. Rachel Graham and Niamh O’Connor got the first half points. The second half saw Catríona McDonnell score a fine point, added to by another point by Rachel Graham and Gemma Mullan topped off the scoring with 2 goals.
