Championship Reports

Ballykinlar v Bredagh,    July 27th,    Ballykinlar
Ballykinlar called the game off on Sunday morning, saying that they could not field a team.

Q-final - Bredagh 9-8 Castlewellan 5-3,    August 10th,    Cherryvale
Bredagh made it into the last four of the East Down A Championship with a comfortable win over Castlewellan at a sun-drenched Cherryvale.

The home side took the game to Castlewellan and with Ruairi Johnston and Decky O'Hara pulling the strings at midfield, Bredagh went ahead 4-7 to 0-3 at half-time. The half-forward line played some super football, the half-backs got in some great blocks and Donal Hughes got on the end of a seven-man move to score the best point of the half. Things were tighter in the second half, especially when debut 'keeper Daniel Kelly sustained a nasty cut due to glass in the goalmouth. Decky O'Hara was very unlucky when the visitors scored from the penalty spot after he saved the first shot. However thanks to great defensive work from MVP Jamie Cleary and attacking work from Conor McCloskey, Bredagh regained the initiative and finished with fine goals from Marcus Young to secure a semi-final spot, probably on Sunday 17th August against Carryduff.

TEAM & SCORERS: Daniel Kelly, Rowan Blaney, Jamie Cleary, Emmett Loughry, Michael Magee, Donal McKegney, Michael Guerin, Decky O'Hara 0-1 and Ruairi Johnston 0-1, Donal Hughes 0-3, Conor McCloskey 4-1, Ciaran Fitzpatrick, Kaelan Devlin 1-1, Emmett Costello 1-1, Marcus Young 3-0, Daniel O'Rourke, Ciaran McKananagh, Marty Maguire, Decky Magee, Seamus McCloskey.

S-FINAL - Bredagh 2-6 Carryduff 1-6,    Tuesday August 19th,    Teconnaught
Corner-forward Marcus Young broke Carryduff hearts with a stunning matchwinner deep into injury-time in this classic encounter. With the scores level and excitement at fever pitch, Marcus kept his cool to drive the ball to the net and send Bredagh into their first Final in many years. In fact, the maroons are also in the League Final after last week's home victory over the same opposition. There was never much between the sides and the lead changed hands no fewer than six times. Bredagh started well but only led by two points to one (all frees) when Carryduff countered and scored a fortunate goal. Within minutes, Danny Nolan set up Marcus Young for a goal at the other end, and an excellent point from Emmett Costello saw Bredagh lead by 1-3 to 1-1 at the break. It later transpired that Costello had broken a bone in his hand at the start of the game, yet he played through the pain barrier right to the final whistle.

In the second-half, Carryduff took control and eventually took a one-point lead with ten minutes to go. Bredagh responded with a Marcus Young point to level the match, but three goal chances were missed, a penalty claim was waved away and a number of decisions by the referee left their supporters baffled. Eventually, a free fell to Marcus Young and the rest is now history.

MVP - Michael 'Diddle' Magee,
the heart and soul of the team, he epitomised the never-say-die attitude and was the star among stars in our defence. Paddy Woods was superb in goals, Jamie Cleary read the game so well at full-back and Deeko Moreland was inspirational at left-half-back.

FINAL - Bredagh 5-7 Kilcoo 4-3,    Saturday, August 30th,    Loughinisland
Bredagh Under-12s - EAST DOWN A CHAMPIONS, 2003
No-one really believed that the city boys would humble the kingpins of under-age football, but that is exactly what happened in a first-half display of total dominance. Bredagh amazingly led by a full fifteen points at the break, 4-6 to 0-3, with the defending champions left completely stunned.

Double-block - Conor McCloskey and Marcus Young epitomised the determination of the team to win the Final.

The highlights were superb defending by rock-solid full-back Jamie Cleary (pictured below), stylish corner-back play by Emmett Costello, tigerish midfield play by Ruairi Johnston, penetrating runs and passes from Niall Wright at left-half-forward, and deadly finishing by Conor McCloskey, Danny Nolan and Marcus Young. Although Kilcoo came back with a late rally, Bredagh held on to win by seven points. Their name will now proudly take it's place on the East Down Championship Shield beside the likes of Bryansford, Castlewellan, Downpatrick and Kilcoo. East Down official Matt Fitzpatrick (pictured below, handing over the Shield) told the large crowd after the game that Bredagh's performance had been as good as any of the past winners. 'In all my years of watching Under-12 Finals that is the best exhibition of football I have ever seen. Bredagh did to Kilcoo what Kilcoo had been doing to everyone else in East Down for the last ten years'.

Bredagh will now take on the South Down champions in an All County decider, as well as participating in the East Down League Final by virtue of Tuesday's night victory at Liatroim, 4-10 to 2-5. This stretched Bredagh's unbeaten record to 15 games.

Conor McCloskey was in the thick of the action, battling for possession and scoring 2-3.

Going back to Saturday, everything came right for the Belfast boys in that first-half. All the hard work on the training pitch by the coaches and players paid off as Bredagh were first to every ball, passed the ball intelligently and took some great scores.
Conor McCloskey opened the scoring with a right-footed point, angling the ball over the bar from out on the left. Minutes later, Niall Wright's pass dropped in behind the Kilcoo full-back to leave McCloskey with a run on goal. His shot had too much power for the goalkeeper. Marcus Young (pictured above) added a second point and the same player made numerous tackles and blocks throughout the game. Ruairi Johnston took another point from distance, McCloskey's speculative left-footed high kick was adjudged to be over the goal-line when the goalkeeper got his hands to it, Danny Nolan capitalised on a poor kick-out for the fourth point and then the same player cracked in a brilliant goal after a sweeping move all the way from the defence, involving Costello, Wright and Fitzpatrick.

Donal Hughes makes a fine catch under pressure.

The large Bredagh crowd cheered every score as the boys continued to dominate. Paddy Hannity took a fine point (which incidentally was the team's 100th point in competitive games this season), McCloskey added another and from a Niall Wright pass Ciaran Fitzpatrick collected the ball, turned and drilled a low shot into the corner of the Kilcoo net. Game over, and it wasn't even half-time.

Early in the second-half, the electric Niall Wright (pictured above) pounced on a pass from Donal Hughes and beat two defenders before firing a great shot past the keeper to leave 18 points between the teams. Kilcoo came back like champions with four goals, but Paddy Woods made some terrific saves and clearances as Bredagh held out for an historic win.
In his acceptance speech, impressive captain Declan O'Hara (pictured above) captured the moment perfectly as he admitted his pre-match fears and spoke of his delight at winning his first-ever final.

TEAM & SCORERS: Paddy Woods, Damien Moreland, Jamie Cleary, Emmett Costello, Pearse Leitch, Declan O'Hara (capt), Donal McKegney, Paddy Hannity 0-1, Ruairi Johnston 0-1, Donal Hughes, Conor McCloskey 2-3, Niall Wright 1-0, Marcus Young 0-1, Ciaran Fitzpatrick 1-0, Daniel Nolan 1-1. Player Interviews,    ,
Six of Bredagh's star players were interviewed in the run-up to the Final.....

TEAM CAPTAIN DECLAN O'HARA
is hoping for a change of luck after being on the losing side in five previous finals, including last year's B Final loss to St Johns by just one point. "It would mean everything to me to win after the other defeats. I've never won a Final and this is the biggest of them all". Midfielder Declan has represented Down on Shane King's elite team but he is a committed club man with several years of service to Bredagh. He has led by example in this record-breaking season and has some great memories from the campaign. "We beat Carryduff twice and my favourite moment was everyone running on to the pitch at the end of the second victory, which was in the Championship semi-finals".
Declan's Favourite Bredagh Player - Conor McCloskey
Favourite County Player - it's still Mickey Linden!
All Ireland Tip - Tyrone

GOALKEEPER PADDY WOODS was one of the heroes of the semi-final triumph with a succession of interceptions and great clearances. Tyrone-mad Paddy was a full-forward on last year's losing team but has found a new position on the team. "I really enjoyed the semi-final as I was involved a lot but I still remember the pain of losing a Final a year ago, so we definitely need to win this time. I hope we win and then Tyrone make it a double!"
Paddy's Favourite Bredagh Player - Donal McKegney
Favourite County Player - Brian Dooher
All Ireland Tip - Tyrone

'STEADY EDDY' FULL-BACK JAMIE CLEARY
has been rock solid for Bredagh in their unbeaten run and still has another year at U-12. Timely interceptions and accurate clearances have been the hallmarks of his season, while his favourite games have been the back-to-back wins over local rivals Carryduff. "The League win was great, but my best moment was when Marcus Young got our winning goal the second day in injury-time".
Jamie's Favourite Bredagh Player - Conor McCloskey
Favourite County Player - Oisin McConville
All Ireland Tip - Armagh

TOP-SCORER CONOR McCLOSKEY
(on an amazing 23 goals and 35 points) is looking forward to an 'incredible occasion and a good experience' on Final day. "It's been good craic this year with this great team, but I'll be very nervous before the game". Conor got both goals in the League win over Carryduff though he enjoyed the second game even more. "The first time was brilliant because we showed great heart and tried so hard, but they were up for it on the second day because they had to win, so that was even better".
Conor's Favourite Bredagh Player - Jamie Cleary
Favourite County Player - Peter Canavan
All Ireland Tip - Tyrone

Playing in this Final means 'loads' to CIARAN FITZPATRICK who modestly selects his favourite player as himself! And why not after 'Fitzy' scored the winning point against Carryduff in the League and he was name MVP after the defeat of St Pauls. "I really enjoyed that game because we won by 18-15 to no score!" Saturday will be a bit closer....
Fitzy's Favourite Bredagh Player - myself!
Favourite County Player - Liam Doyle
All Ireland Tip - Armagh

The baby of the team, 10-year-old DANIEL NOLAN has made a valuable contribution in both setting up and scoring valuable goals and points (his personal tally is 6-3). Coming from a Fermanagh family, his favourite player is their full-forward Stephen Maguire and he's seen them have a ground-breaking year, just like Bredagh. "It's been really exciting, especially the semi-final win and the goal at the end, but I'll be nervous because the Final means a lot".
Danny's Favourite Bredagh Player - Ruairi Johnston
Favourite County Player - Stephen Maguire
All Ireland Tip - Tyrone

'Bredagh are Brilliant',    ,
In an article titled 'BREDAGH ARE BRILLIANT' in the Down Recorder newspaper, Matt Fitzpatrick gives glowing praise to the Under-12 team that won the East Down Championship. He wrote....
'Bredagh produced a scintillating display of power football and deadly finishing to overcome champions Kilcoo.... This Bredagh display was like a breath of fresh air as they took the game to the champions, outplaying and outscoring them in one of the best juvenile finals seen in recent years.... It was the first U-12 success for the south Belfast side and it was surely one to remember. The terrific coaching scheme in the club over the past two years is now paying dividends'.

Bredagh v Mayobridge,    Saturday September 27th 2.30,    Burren

League Reports

RGU Downpatrick 6-3 Bredagh 6-6,      D'patrick    April 6th

Smiling before and after a great start to the season - Ciaran 'Fitzy' Fitzpatrick and Michael 'Diddles' Magee showing how well he can act!

Bredagh Under-12s opened their League campaign with a fantastic win in Downpatrick. The lads were well beaten at Russell Park last year but this time round, a combination of determination and commitment carved out an important win before a good turn-out of Bredagh supporters. An even first-half saw Bredagh take the game to the home side despite playing into the breeze. Paddy Hannity opened the scoring with a well-taken goal but the Hoops fought back and recorded 2-1 before a Conor McCloskey piledriver and another major score from Ben Horner kept Bredagh in touch.

Full-forward Paddy Hannity scored our first goal.

Tight defending by Jamie 'long arms' Cleary and Deeko Moreland left the half-time score: Downpatrick 3-3 Bredagh 3-0. Playing with the wind in the second-half, Bredagh's midfield of Decky O'Hara and Emmet Costello took control and set up a platform for Conor to record 1-3 and for Donal Hughes to fire over two lovely points. Downpatrick fought back and the lead changed hands on a couple of occasions with Paddy Woods making an excellent save. Two 'Captain Fantastic' points from Decky set up a frantic last five minutes and goals from supersub Daniel Nolan and Marcus Young made the points safe for the Belfast lads. A super victory and encouragement for the whole squad.

Well done lads! The two Damians give an after-match word of congratulations.

TEAM & SCORERS:
Paddy Woods, Michael Guerin, Jamie Cleary, Damien Moreland, Pearse Leitch, Donal "MVP" McKegney, Michael Magee, Declan O'Hara 0-2, Emmett Costello, Ciaran Fitzpatrick, Marcus Young 1-0, Donal Hughes 0-2, Conor McCloskey 2-3, Paddy Hannity 1-0, Ben Horner 1-0, Ryan McElkerney, Ben McCaughey, Daniel Nolan 1-0, James Archer, Kieran McKavanagh, Damhnan Farmer, Niall Boyd, Breannain O'Callaghan, Marty O'Hara, Marty Maguire, Nathan Moreland, Rowan Blaney, James McWilliams, Michael Smith, Aaron McPeake.

U-12 Star footballer and hurler Emmett Costello pictured for a profile by the South Belfast News.

NOTE: The Under-12s had two games pre-season warming up for this game, at home to St Johns (winning by 8-7 to 6-0) and an easy win at home to Newry Mitchels.

Bredagh 7-7 Saul 1-1,      Cherryvale    April 13th
Bredagh had an easy win over Saul. This was an opportunity for players who may not feature in every game to stake their claim and several took their opportunity. Rowan Blaney and Deeko Moreland were sound in defence, Matthew Mullan covered a lot of ground at midfield (and was booked for his trouble) while Marcus Young, Aaron McPeake and Conor McCloskey were outstanding in attack. However Ruairi Johnston was the clear MVP with fielding, running and tackling of the highest order, not to mention 2-2 from play.
TEAM & SCORERS: Paddy Woods. Rowan Blaney, Jamie Cleary, Michael Guerin, Damien Moreland, Donal McKegney, Pearse Leitch, Ruairi Johnston 2-2, Matthew Mullan. Marcus Young 0-1, Conor McCloskey 2-4, Ciaran Fitzpatrick, Aaron McPeake, Paddy Hannity 1-1, Daniel O'Rourke, Ben Horner 1-0, Breannain O'Callaghan, Nathan Moreland, Marty Maguire, Niall Boyd 1-0.

Coach Damian McCloskey passes on words of advice and encouragement to Conor McCloskey and Emmett Costello at the 2002 Warrenpoint U-10 Tournament. All three are now part of the Under-12 set-up, as are Jamie Cleary and Marty O'Hara, who are in the background of this picture.

Bredagh 8-7 Carryduff B 0-0,      Cherryvale    4th May 5pm
Bredagh made it 4 wins out of 4 in the East Down Under 12 League with a big win over Carryduff B. This was a much better performance by the team following a disappointing result against Sarsfields in Friday night's friendly. However Carryduff never gave up and were unlucky not to record a score, particularly in the second half when they hit the crossbar. Bredagh started well with a Conor McCloskey goal and the forwards produced some lovely interplay in a sparkling first half. Five of the six forwards got on the score-sheet and the sixth, Ciaran Fitzpatrick, got a goal in the second half. Decky O'Hara and Paddy Hannity controlled the midfield while Jamie Cleary and MVP Donal Mc Kegney were uncompromising defenders. In the second half all the subs got a run-out and all did well; Emmet Loughry took no nonsense at the back while Ben McCaughey was unlucky to have a goal disallowed.
TEAM & SCORERS: Marty O'Hara, Michael Guerin, Jamie Cleary, Deeko Moreland, Diddles Magee, Donal McKegney 0-1, Pearse Leitch, Decky O'Hara 0-1 (c) and Paddy Hannity 1-0, Donal Hughes 1-1, Conor McCloskey 2-1, Ciaran Fitzpatrick 1-0, Daniel O'Rourke 0-1, Marcus Young 0-1, Daniel Nolan 2-1, Ciaran McKavanagh 1-0, Ryan McElkerney, Damhnan Farmer, Ben McCaughey, James McWilliams, Emmett Loughry, Nathan Moreland, Rowan Blaney, Breannain O'Callaghan, Matthew Mullan, Marty Maguire.

Bryansford 3-3 Bredagh 8-5,      Newcastle    11th May
Bredagh made it 5 out of 5 in the East Down under 12 league with a crushing defeat of Bryansford in Newcastle. This result will send a message to all of County Down that the Belfast lads are serious about honours this year. Despite the poor conditions, both sides served up an exciting game before a good crowd, and only in the second half did the visitors pull away. Bredagh opened the scoring with a Paddy Hannity special before the Ford equalised when a long ball deceived Paddy Woods. Ciaran Fitzpatrick added another goal and point for Bredagh, but the home side had a period of domination and went 4 points ahead. Two more Hannity goals put Bredagh ahead and Marcus Young and Conor McCloskey points opened up a 4 point gap at the interval. Bredagh played some inspired football on the restart and super passing opened up the Ford defence time after time. Fitzy's left foot and Daniel's right peg put 2 more goals on the scoreboard before MVP Conor scored one of the best indidividual goals I have seen at this level and then added another 1-1 for good measure. The fact that Bryansford managed only one point in the second half was down to super defending by Pearse Leitch, Michael Magee and Damien Moreland, but the whole panel deseves credit for braving the elements and displaying courage and commitment to go clear at the top of the league.
TEAM & SCORERS: Paddy Woods, Michael Guerin, Jamie Cleary, Deeko Moreland, Diddles Magee, Donal McKegney, Pearse Leitch, Decky O'Hara (C), Ruairi Johnston, Donal Hughes, Conor McCloskey (MVP), Ciaran Fitz, Marcus Young, Paddy Hat-trick Hannity, Danny Nolan, Emmett Cookies Costello, Ben Horner, Matthew Mullan, Ciaran McKavanagh, Emmett Loughry, Marty O'Hara, Nathan Moreland, Daniel O Rourke, Rowan Blaney, Damhan Farmer, Niall Boyd.

Bredagh 11-13 Dromara 0-0,      Cherryvale    18th May

Bredagh managers Paul Doran and Damien Canavan were happy with the boys after the defeat of Dromara.

The Bredagh bandwagon kept on rolling with a comprehensive victory over Dromara. This was another first class performance from the team and they earned the round of applause from the home crowd having held the visitors scoreless, the third time in the last four league games the lads have done this. Playing with the wind the home side took control and Niall Wright pressurised the home defence to win the opening goal. Dromara had one of the best players on display in their number three but she was unable to prevent Niall chalk up 5-1 on his way to the MVP award. Other top performances came from the entire forward line who blocked and defended to allow the defence a day off. Paddy Hannity and Decky O'Hara controlled midfield and linked well with the lively half forward line of Donal Hughes, Ciaran Fitz and Conor McCloskey (scorer of 3-6!). The big talking point was a break-through - Diddles got a point and, to celebrate, he was going to take on the entire Dromara team.
TEAM & SCORERS: Ryan McElkerney, Rowan Blaney, Jamie Cleary, Emmet Loughry, Pearse Leitch, Donal Mc Kegney, Damien Moreland, Decky O Hara(C) (1-0), Paddy Hannity (0-1), Donal Hughes, Conor McCloskey( 3-6), Ciaran Fitzpatrick (2-2), Daniel O Rourke, Niall Wright (5-1), Matthew Mullan (0-1), Michael Magee(0-1), Michael Guerin, Breannain O'Callaghan, Nathan Moreland, Ciaran McKavanagh, James McWilliams, Damhnan Farmer, Decky Magee, Niall Boyd.

Teconnaught 0-2 Bredagh 8-5,      Teconnaught    25th May 5pm
Bredagh made it 7 wins out of 7 with an impressive display in Teconnaught. Playing into the breeze in the first half the lads showed excellent movement off the ball and played as a team . With such determination it was no surprise that the half -time score was Teconnaught 0-0 Bredagh 6-3, and the second half saw the substitutes do well when called on. Bredagh's defence played well as a unit and with an all-round super performance it was fitting that the whole squad was voted MVP.
TEAM & SCORERS: P.Woods (0-1), E. Loughry, D. Moreland (miracle number 1 - 0-1)M.Guerin, M.Magee, D.Mc Kegney (miracle number 2 -0-1), P.Leitch, D.O'Hara, P.Hannity(1-0), D.Hughes (2-0), C.Mc Closkey (2-0), B.Horner, D.O'Rourke, N.Wright (2-0), R.Mc Elkerney(2-0), K.Mc Cavanagh, J.Mc Williams, N.Moreland, M.Smith.

St Pauls 0-0 Bredagh 17-14,      St Pauls    27th April
Bredagh showed they are too strong for the weaker teams in this division with an easy victory in Holywood. Despite missing players such as Deeko Moreland, Marcus Young and Emmett Costello they had 68 points to spare over a gallant St Pauls. The home side kept plugging away and in fact had a penalty saved by reserve goalkeeper Conor McCloskey in the second half. Bredagh had twenty good performances and Ciaran Fitzpatrick was voted MVP.
TEAM & SCORERS: Paddy Woods (0-1), Emmett Loughrey, Jamie Cleary, Michael Guerin, Michael Magee (0-2), Donal McKegney, Pearse Leitch, Declan O'Hara (0-1)(c), Ruairi Johnston (1-0), Ciaran Fitzpatrick (2-3), Donal Hughes (2-0), Conor McCloskey (4-3), Daniel O'Rourke (0-2), Paddy Hannity (2-1), Daniel Nolan (4-1), Ben Horner (1-0), Ryan McElkerney (1-0), Breannain O'Callaghan, Niall Boyd, Marty Maguire (og 1-0).

Bredagh 3-2 Sarsfields 4-10,      Cherryvale    2nd May
Bredagh lost their unbeaten record with a comprehensive defeat to Sarsfields in a friendly at Cherryvale. The home side started well and were ahead by a goal at half-time. Damien Mac took the opportunity to change the line-up but Bredagh lost their way and missed several scoring opportunities while conceeding a bag-full of goals and eight points. Credit to referee Michael Coffey, a good turn-out of parents and the players for enduring heavy rain-showers but we now know there is plenty of work to do.
TEAM: Paddy Woods, Michael Guerin, Jamie Cleary, Rowan Blaney, Pearse Leitch, Donal McKegney, Michael Magee, Rory Johnston and Declan O'Hara, Donal Hughes, Conor McCloskey, Ciaran Fitzpatrick, Daniel Nolan, Paddy Hannity, Aaron McPeake, Breanain O'Callaghan, Ben Horner, Ryan McElkerney, Emmett Loughry, Marty Maguire, Marty O'Hara, Matthew Mullan, Ben McCaughey.

Bredagh 9-4 St Brides 5-3,      Cherryvale    14th May
Bredagh took the opportunity to give 26 players a run-out in a high-scoring encounter with local neighbours St Brides. With several key players missing, this was a chance for some fringe players to shine and some took their chance. Rowan Blaney and Emmett Loughry were solid in the full-back line while Ben McCaughey and pint-sized Decky Magee were impressive in the half back line. The visitors opened strongly and took an early lead before Decky O'Hara and Paddy Hannity got to grips with the midfield and two Paddy Woods goals left it level at the end of the first quarter. Bredagh played good football in the second quarter with Donal Hughes and Daniel Nolan particularly impressive. The third quarter was even but with so many substitutions it was inevitable that St Brides would fight back but, thanks to some good saves from Ryan McElkerney, Bredagh held on in the final quarter to record a well-deserved win. Thanks to Damien C for refereeing and taking well deserved abuse from all concerned.
TEAM & SCORERS: Ryan McElkerney, Rowan Blaney, Deeko Moreland, Emmett Loughry, Diddles Magee, Donal McKegney, Pearse Leitch, Decky O'Hara (c) 0-1, Paddy Hannity, Niall Wright 1-0, Emmett Costello 1-0, Ben Horner, Daniel Nolan 1-1, Matthew Mullan, Paddy Woods 2-0, Daniel O'Rourke, Ben McCaughey, Ciaran Fitz 1-0, Donal Hughes 3-1, Aaron McPeake 0-1, Kieran McKavanagh, Damhan Farmer, James McWilliams, Decky Magee, Ronan McKegney, Marcus Young.

Bredagh 6-12 Bryansford 2-9,      Cherryvale    June 29th
Tough talking at half-time from manager Damien Canavan shook a lack-lustre Bredagh team into action in the second-half of this first game in the revised Section A. Winning only by one point at the break, 2-7 to 2-6, the manager's words and the introduction of U-10 star Danny Nolan did the trick. The wee man finished as our top scorer on 2-2 and the team went on to finish with double scores (30 to 15). Bryansford were bigger and stronger up the middle and posed problems for Bredagh in the first-half, but Michael Magee led by example from the back and the midfield of Declan O'Hara and Ruairi Johnston got to grips with their counterparts. The returning Donal McKegney and Jamie Cleary gave the home side a tremendous boost, and with Conor McCloskey and Ciaran Fitzpatrick scoring 1-2 each, Bredagh claimed an excellent victory.

Castlewellan 5-2 Bredagh 5-7,      C'wellan    July 6th
Bredagh had a good win at Castlewellan to preserve their 100% record in competitive games this season. Despite missing key players the Belfast lads fielded a strong side and handed debuts to two U-10 stars, Tim Durkan and Kaelan Devlin. Durkan in fact opened the scoring with two fine long-range points but the early exchanges were even and Bredagh were fortunate that the home side missed several easy chances. However, superb midfield play by Ruairi Johnston and Decky O'Hara set up goals for Paddy Hannity and Marcus Young to leave the half-time score: Bredagh 2-4 Castlewellan 0-0. The visitors continued to dominate with the reliable half-back line of Magee, McKegney and Leitch tackling and blocking like men possessed and Emmett Costello leading the half-forward line with two good points. The game looked to be over at 3-7 to 0-0 and with 10 minutes left, but a combination of injuries and substitutions allowed Castlewellan to come back strongly and, unbelievably, they scored five goals in succession! Kaelan Devlin steadied the ship with two well-taken goals and Bredagh finished ahead by five points.
TEAM & SCORERS: Marty O'Hara, Ben McCaughey (Michael Smith), Jamie Cleary, Rowan Blaney (Decky Magee), Pearse Leitch, Donal McKegney, Michael Magee (Ronan McKegney), Ruairi Johnston, Decky O'Hara (c) 0-1, Ciaran Fitzpatrick 0-1, Emmett Costello 0-2, Donal Hughes 0-1, Tim Durkan 0-2, Paddy Hannity 2-0, Marcus Young 1-0 (Kaelan Devlin 2-0).

Downpatrick 3-7 Bredagh 5-9,      D'patrick    Tuesday July 22nd
July is always a difficult month for Bredagh teams with so many players going on holiday but this victory showed that the U-12 squad has strength in depth. We won at Downpatrick on the opening day of the League season and to do so again is a tremendous achievement, especially with many squad members playing an important part. Rowan Blaney made a marvellous block in the dying minutes, Kaelan Devlin came on as a sub to score the last 1-1 and Ben Horner pounced for a goal in either half.
Things didn't start well with the home side finding the net in the first minute and with Bredagh doing everything but score at the other end - we hit the post, Paddy Hannity had a point-blank shot saved, Deeko had a penalty saved and a close-in free went wide. But eventually Conor McCloskey's point was added to by Niall Wright and Emmett Costello, and Bredagh took the lead when Paddy Hannity rippled the Downpatrick net midway through the half. Ben Horner was on hand to tap in a second goal and more points from Declan O'Hara and Niall Wright made it 3-4 to 1-3 at the break.
Jamie Cleary went off injured at half-time and Downpatrick opened with two points but a McCloskey free and a Horner goal settled things down. The home side replied with a goal, but Bredagh again responded with points from McCloskey and Hannity, followed by a great goal from Kaelan Devlin. There were nine points in it, but unlike the Ulster Final, there was no way Bredagh would allow a Tyrone-style comeback! Wonderful blocking from Leitch and Blaney kept the hoops at bay, while Paddy Woods made a fine save, Paddy Hannity came out from full-forward to do a lot of impressive work in the middle, and when the final whistle came, it was greeted with relief. This was a tough game and although Bredagh has now made it three wins out of three in Section A, everyone knows that the performance will have to be improved immensely for the challenges from the likes of Kilcoo (August 5th) and Carryduff (August 10th) in the weeks to come.
SCORERS: Ben Horner 2-0, Kaelan Devlin 1-1, Paddy Hannity 1-1, Declan O'Hara 1-0, Conor McCloskey 0-3, Niall Wright 0-3, Emmett Costello 0-1.
MVP - Pearse Leitch - Goalkeeper Paddy Woods recommended Pearse for the sterling work he did in defence, and although Conor McCloskey and Niall Wright were also mentioned, Pearse took the award.

NOTE: The U-12s have now won all eleven League games and have scored 76 goals and 84 points along the way, which is very impressive, but we have won nothing yet and there is a big step up in class coming up - that's when we will find out if the squad has really got what it takes to be the best in East Down.

Bredagh 2-5 Carryduff 1-7 ,      Cherryvale    August 12th
Magnificent, superb, tremendous - pick whichever adjective you like to describe this milestone victory over our nearest and dearest rivals! As co-manager Damien Canavan told the boys after the game, the win had been down to 'hard work, sheer determination and a greater will-to-win'. The Bredagh boys showed amazing heart to deny a bigger team in front of a 250-strong crowd with a display of skill and guts. Club stalwart Eamonn Gilmore couldn't remember the last time Bredagh beat Carryduff in a competitive game at this level, but it's been coming for the past few years. Progress has been made and all credit must go to the coaches - Damien Canavan, Paul Doran and Damian McCloskey, for moulding a marvellous team who are still unbeaten in League and Championship. In fact, they are now into the League decider with Kilcoo, as well as the Championship semi-finals.

One word of caution - we have won nothing yet, and Kilcoo are a mighty outfit who beat Carryduff by 25 points, so there is work to be done, and training is on Thursday night at 7.00pm.

As for this game, Bredagh started with a quality goal from Conor McCloskey, but then conceded three points. Emmett Costello profitted from good work by Ciaran Fitzpatrick to send us in at half-time one point to the good, 1-1 to 0-3. Niall Wright had a goalbound effort saved by the big Carryduff keeper and at the start of the second-half, Bredagh saw an amazing four goal chances denied. Marcus Young saw one effort rebound off the post, another kicked off the line, another saved by the keeper and Niall Wright had another one deflected just wide. Still, Fitzy and Declan O'Hara pointed to put us three ahead. Then Carryduff got two points and a goal after a deflection to go two ahead, but Conor McCloskey replied with a wonderful goal to send the home supporters into a frenzy. Emmett Costello added a point but several bad wides meant that Carryduff were still alive, and when a dubious refereeing decision led to an equalising point, it looked like Bredagh were going to fall short. But that was to underestimate this special team - a brilliant counter-attack saw Ciaran Fitzpatrick send over the winning point! There were scenes of jubiliation at the end, and to think that the success was achieved without key men Ruairi Johnston, Pearse Leitch and Paddy Hannity. Well done everyone - an historic night for all in Bredagh.

Liatroim 3-5 Bredagh 4-10,      Liatroim    Tuesday September 2nd
This win means Bredagh has secured a place in next month's League Final. Some of the squad players who have supported the team so well in recent matches put in super performances, such as substitute goalkeeper Daniel Kelly with two spectacular saves, Ben Horner with a goal near the end and Michael Guerin with a fine point. As for the regulars, Deeko Moreland scored a rare point, Jamie Cleary was invincible at full-back, Paddy Hannity worked hard at midfield, Niall Wright caused havoc in attack and Conor McCloskey took a few long-distance points.

Bredagh 6-12 Castlewellan 1-5,      Cherryvale    June 15th
Bredagh moved clear at the top of the league with a comprehensive victory over Castlewellan. This was the eighth win in the league and the lads have sent out a clear message that they mean business in County Down this year. The only sour note in this victory was a serious arm injury to star full-back Jamie Cleary so get well soon from all of the squad. Bredagh settled well and opened the scoring with points from Ciaran Fitzpatrick and Donal Hughes. The visitors fought back but found the home defence taking no nonsense, especially Michael Magee, Damien Moreland and Emmett Loughry. Paddy Hannity and captain Decky O'Hara took control of the midfield and Castlewellan could not handle the skill and strong running of Conor McCloskey. In the second-half Bredagh took the foot off the pedal, apart from MVP Pearse Leitch who never stopped running throughout the hour. Charlie McGrath showed great bravery in a terrific tackle, which led to him having to go off as team medic Kate Hannity ruled him unfit to continue. Matthew Mullan pulled off a good save and Daniel O'Rourke scored a great goal to finish off an impressive victory for the Belfast lads.
TEAM & SCORERS: Matthew Mullan, Emmett Loughry, Jamie Cleary (Michael Guerin), Rowan Blaney (Charlie McGrath/Nathan Moreland), Michael Magee, Deeko Moreland, Pearse Leitch, Decky O'Hara 0-3, Paddy Hannity 1-0, Ciaran Fitz 0-2, Conor McCloskey 1-5, Donal Hughes 1-1, Marcus Young (Daniel O'Rourke 1-0), Niall Wright 1-1 (Ryan McElkerney), Daniel Nolan 1-0 (Ben Horner), James McWilliams.

Bredagh 8-5 Sarsfields 1-3,      Cherryvale    Wednesday June 11th
The boys gained revenge for their only defeat this season with a comprehensive win over Sarsfields. The home side were ring-rusty but a strong second-half performance sets them up for a tough encounter with Castlewellan this Sunday. With several key players absent (get well soon Donal) Damien C gave a debut to Charlie McGrath and other fringe players also did well. The visitors resorted to physical tactics in the second-half but the Bredagh lads kept cool (well, Decky and Deeko did but Diddles couldn't resist a rumble). The goalscorers were Marcus (3), Niall, Fitz, Donal H, Deeko and Deckie.
TEAM & SCORERS: Paddy Woods, Emmett Loughry, Charlie McGrath, Rowan Blaney, Pearse Leitch, Emmett Costello, Michael Magee, Paddy Hannity and Decky O'Hara, Donal Hughes, Damien Moreland, Ciaran Fitzpatrick, Marcus Young, Niall Wright, Ryan McElkerney, Breannain O Callaghan, Michael Guerin, Ben McCaughey, Ben Walker, Niall Brown, James Quinn, Matthew Mullan, Kieran McKavanagh, Daniel O'Rourke, James McWilliams, Nathan Moreland.

Bredagh v Kilcoo - OFF,      Cherryvale    Tuesday August 5th
Thunder and lightning forced the postponement of this eagerly-awaited contest. Kilcoo are coming off a big victory at Carryduff, by 5-15 to 1-2.

C'wellan Tournament,      C'wellan    Saturday August 23rd
Bredagh entered for this 9-a-side competition for the second year running but with only the minimum number of players available. Many people were away for the Bank Holiday weekend so these brave '9' were aware from the beginning that they were going to have to play ALL games. The first game was against Ballymartin and Bredagh started quite slowly. Poor finishing with efforts for goals instead of simple points meant we were four points down at half-time. Bredagh played much better in the second-half but were unable to claw back the deficit and lost by two points. The second game was against a physically strong and fancied Annaclone side, but it was a very exciting match in which the Bredagh boys played to their true potential. Unfortunately, the lack of reserves took its toll. Annaclone changed their players frequently in well-rehearsed fashion and eventually sapped the energy from Bredagh leading to another two-point defeat for Bredagh. The third and last match was against Longstone. A tired first-half display by Bredagh allowed Longstone to build up a lead which, despite a spirited comeback in the second-half, never looked in danger. The eventual margin was three points.
TEAM FOR ALL MATCHES: Matthew Mullan, Pearse Leitch, Donal McKegney, Martin Maguire, Damien Moreland, Declan O'Hara, Ciaran Fitzpatrick, Kaelan Devlin, Daniel O'Rourke.

Deccie O'Hara and Cormac Hughes,

Cormac and Declan are pictured at the end of a game in Newcastle in March where they both started on Shane King's Development Team. The boys came through a series of trials in 2002 and have benefitted from regular sessions with the best young players in the county. In January, they enjoyed a trip to Dublin and the game in Newcastle was again the Dromore club from Co Tyrone. Declan started at left-corner-back while Cormac lined out at centre-half-forward. Can anyone remember the last time Bredagh had two players on a Down team?! Since this occasion, the boys have been joined on the elite squad by Conor McCloskey.

Bredagh 3-15 St Galls 2-1,      Cherryvale    Sunday September 14th
The boys warmed up for the All County Final with a challenge against St Galls and played very well with an early goal from Danny Nolan supplemented by points from Marcus Young, Conor McCloskey and even a cracker from Pearse Leitch! It's a long time since Bredagh beat St Galls and in truth we expected a tougher game but ran out easy winners by 3-15 to 2-1.
