Championship Reports
Teconnaught beat Bredagh, July 24th , Teconnaught
Unfortunately, the holiday season meant that we had only 12 players available and could not travel for the game.
Kilcoo 7-9 Bredagh 0-2, July 31st, Kilcoo
This was always going to be a difficult task after the unkind draw paired us with one of the top sides in East Down. It didn't help that the elements were against us in the first-half and that we had to travel to Kilcoo. Add in the holidays effect and the absence of manager Paul Boyd and you wonder why Championship games this year have been played in July. Still, Niall Boyle, Kevin Harte and the U-14 pair of Oisin Quinn and Eoin Costello all performed well for the city team, showing great heart in the true spirit of Bredagh. This was a big defeat, but the wider picture must be taken into account - as the Kilcoo manager said in the Bredagh dressing-room after the game, 'it took us fifty years to win a Minor Championship - keep at it'.
League Reports
Bredagh 5-8 Liatroim 8-6, Cherryvale April 10th

Bredagh U-16s, 2003
'I've never seen a game like it' - Liatroim manager.
Bredagh U-16s and the much-fancied Liatroim served up a cracker at Cherryvale on Thursday April 10 in the opening game of the league. The visitors raced into a big lead, 3-4 to 0-0, and it looked even worse for Bredagh at half-time when they trailed by 5-4 to 0-6. But, a magnificent comeback saw the home side score five second-half goals. Paul Boyd and Michael Diffin got the first two goals to give Bredagh the lift they needed. Further points from Declan Noble and Paul Boyd rattled Liatroim, and then brilliant goals from Paul McCurry and James Johnston brought the scores level. The boys had run their heart out for the jersey and started to tire. The game turned again when Liatroim got and converted a dubious penalty after a brilliant Neil Poland save, followed by another goal, but still the Bredagh lads fought back and stand-in full-forward Conal Short scored a great goal to put the cat among the pigeons once more. Liatroim responded for a final time with a goal and a point to seal a
fantastic game. These Bredagh lads have a lot to be proud of. They played their hearts out and it shows what team spirit and a love of the game can do. Every player played their part and it would be difficult to single anyone out but Aiden O’Neill, Stephen Gray, Paddy Cassidy and Dermot Coffey gave everything they had in defence while James Johnson, Kevin Harte, Paul McCurry and Declan Noble ruled the midfield for long periods. BTW, Bredagh's six first-half points came from Declan Noble, Paul McCurry, Paul Boyd, Aiden O’Neill and James Johnston (2).

U-16 Star Paul Boyd scored 1-1 against Liatroim.
TEAM & SCORERS: Neil Poland, Niall Boyle, Dermot Coffey, Lawrence Maginness, Paddy Cassidy, Stephen Gray, Aiden O’Neill 0-1, Kevin Harte, James Johnston 1-2, Declan Noble 0-2, Paul McCurry 1-1, Paul Boyd 1-2, Joe Steele, Conal Short 1-0, Michael Diffin 1-0, Jason McMurray and Jonathan Pup Arthurs.
U-16 TRAINING ...

Well held! From left: Conal Short, Joe Steele and Stevie Gray are impressed.

He's behind you. Stevie Gray holds the ball with one hand and holds Joe Steele off with the other.

U-16 Star Niall Boyle in action in the new Gaelic Gear kit in a pre-season friendly at home to St Endas. The team also played St Brides pre-season, winning at their place by 4-10 to 3-6.

Bredagh and East Down U-16 player Kevin Harte.
Kilcoo 4-6 Bredagh 1-4, Kilcoo 24th April Kilcoo is always a hard place to go, but when you only have fourteen players and Stephen Gray gets injured after five minutes, it is an impossible task. They are possibly the strongest youth side in East Down and probably should be in the county leagues, but that is the standard that we have to aim for. Perhaps it was a problem with Easter week, but it wasn't fair on the mentors to have to phone round looking for a fifteenth player at the last minute. On a high note, Paul Doole had a great game. Aiden O’Neill and Paul McCurry
played well and Pup gave a good display in goals. Neil Poland was 'blooded'
at right-corner-back and Paul Boyd got his customary scores from the half-forward line. Paul McCurry's two points and Declan Noble's point were scores to be proud of - hit with accuracy and pace from at least thirty yards.
TEAM & SCORERS: Jonathan ‘Pup’ Arthurs, Neil Poland, Paddy Cassidy, Paul Doole, Niall Boyle, Aiden O’Neill, Niall Devlin, Stephen Gray, Kevin Harte, Declan Noble 0-1, Paul McCurry 0-2, Paul Boyd 1-1, Rowan Smart, Michael Diffin and Joe Steele.
Bredagh 2-12 Loughinisland 3-7, Cherryvale 1st May 7:30pm Teconnaught referee Shane Walsh said at half time he’d never seen a game
like it. He said most games nowadays were over by half time but this one
had everything! The Loughinisland team were a well drilled and physical
side but the Bredagh lads got it right on the night. After a slow start the
partnership of James Johnston and Paul McCurry started their scoring act.
Brilliant individual skill and solos were displayed by both players. Kevin
Harte played a more defensive role and kept the Loughinisland midfield
partnership at bay. In defence Dermot Coffey, Paddy Cassidy and Paul Doole
kept the front line quiet. Nearly all the opposition scores came from their
big half forwards. Pup had a good game between the posts and Aiden O’Neill
and Niall Boyle held solid against far bigger opposition. Up front we could
have sealed the game much earlier had we have taken all our chances but
praise must go to the whole team for a marvellous display against a very
talented Loughinisland squad. Well done lads you did the club proud!
TEAM & SCORERS: Jonathan Pup Arthurs, Dermot Coffey, Paddy Cassidy, Paul Doole, Niall Boyle, Stephen Gray, Aiden O’Neill, Kevin Harte, James Johnston 1-7, Declan Noble 0-1, Paul McCurry 1-1, Paul Boyd, Joe Steele 0-2, Michael Diffin, Niall Devlin 0-1, Johnney Johnston, Christopher Kelly, Eoin
Costello and Neil Poland.
Carryduff 2-17 Bredagh 1-7, Carryduff 8th May The Carryduff manager said at the end of this exciting game that final score had no reflection to what happened on the pitch but sometimes that’s how it
goes. Carryduff were tall and physical and had the wind on their backs
throughout the first half. It was hoped that Bredagh would advantage from
the wind in the second half but the elements being what they are..
unpredictable.. gave Bredagh no boost as the wind dropped dramatically in
the second half. Nevertheless, Bredagh proved they are a team to be
reckoned with. Pup Arthurs pulled off some wonderful saves, Declan Noble gave
a brilliant performance on the half forward line, and James Johnston, Kevin
Harte, Stephen Gray and Paul McCurry gave their all in midfield.
TEAM & SCORERS: Jonathan Pup Arthurs, Dermot Coffey, Paddy Cassidy, Conal Short, Niall Boyle, Stephen Gray, Aiden O’Neill, Kevin Harte 0-3, James Johnston 0-4, Declan Noble, Paul McCurry 1-0, Joe Steele, Michael Diffin, Paul Boyd, Niall Devlin, Johnny Johnston, Christopher Kelly, Eoin Costello, Paul Doole, Neil Poland and Oisin Quinn - 21 players the biggest turn out yet. Well Done!
NOTE: We meet next Thursday for the game against Teconnaught at 6.50pm. Training this Sunday FOR EVERYONE at 10.00am.
Bredagh 3-6 Teconnaught 4-12, Cherryvale 15th May Despite being three senior first team players down (Pup, Paul McCurry and Kevin Harte) the team gave a battling performance against a good Teconnaught team. The sides were very even and a half-time score of 2-4 to 1-3 for Teconnaught reflected the defensive qualities of our team. James McAllister was taken off through injury close to half time and replaced by Chris Kelly who gave an excellent display at left corner back. Paddy Cassidy was outstanding and marshalled the defence along side Dermot Coffey. The first half scores came from the boot of captain James Johnston who, as ever, controlled midfield and played the captains role of controlling his troops. Paul Boyd got his customary goal and a great point from Aiden O’Neill playing in his new role of half forward kept us in it. The second half started fast and furious - Shorty got a great goal from a scheming free masterminded by James Johnston and Stephen Gray. James scored a further point before Declan Noble and Stephen Gray got great scores. Teconnaught always kept their noses in front and a further point from Paul Boyd and a brilliant save from Michael Diffin wasn’t enough to clinch victory. Nevertheless the lads took their chances. They played for the first time like a team and they showed a lot of heart and courage to take this Teconnaught team on. If it wasn’t for Justin Kelly, the Teconnaught keeper, who knows what would have happened.
TEAM & SCORERS: Neil Poland, Dermot Coffey, Paddy Cassidy, James McAllister, Niall Boyle, Stephen Gray 0-1, Paul Doole, Conal Short 1-0, James Johnston 1-2, Declan Noble 0-1, Aiden O’Neill 0-1, Niall Devlin, Joe Steele,
Michael Diffin, Paul Boyd 1-1, Christopher Kelly, Eoin Costello, Niall
Colton and Rowan Smart.
NOTE: Training as usual on Sunday at 10.00am. Next game against Drumaness next Thursday, meet at Cherryvale at 6.20pm sharp. Can Eoin Costello, Niall Colton, Oisin Quinn, John McKenna and Rowen Smart turn up for the U16s if available?
Drumaness 2-5 Bredagh 3-7, Drumaness 22nd May Again this week Bredagh were without the core of their team due to exams - James Johnston, Kevin Harte, Paul McCurry and Declan Noble were all absent. All except one was with the U-14s last year and this performance proves they have come a long way. A number of the Drumaness lads were physically taller and stronger but the lads remembered all they learned on the training pitch and turned round a 1-5 to 1-2 deficit at half-time to win with a few points to spare. Paddy Cassidy was in classic form and led from the back. Stephen Gray controlled midfield and Dermot Coffey, Doolers, James McAllister and Chris Kelly all had fine performances at the back. Jonathan ‘Pup’ Arthurs was outstanding again in goals and Michael Diffin showed his full potential in scoring two goals. Credit must go to the whole squad who, deflated by the absence of their team-mates, produced a quality performance with vigour, talent and team spirit.
TEAM & SCORERS: Jonathan Pup Arthurs, Dermot Coffey , Paddy Cassidy, Conal Short, Niall Boyle, Stephen Gray, Aiden O’Neill 0-3, Joe Steele, Michael Diffin 2-0, Paul Boyd 0-1, Niall Devlin 0-1, Christopher Kelly, Eoin
Costello 1-2, Paul Doole, James McAllister, Neil Poland and Jason McMurray.
Training Sunday as usual at 10.00am. Next game against Laochra na Farraige
next Thursday 29th May . Meet at 6.15pm at Cherryvale.
Laochra na Farraige 4-14 Bredagh 1-2, Dundrum 29th May A first-minute goal by Paul Boyd unfortunately proved to be a false dawn for the lads as they succumbed to a fast and skilful home side at Dundrum. We were completely outplayed and made things more difficult by making a series of individual errors and by not playing as a team. Our only other scores were a free from James Johnston in the first-half, which tied the teams at 1-1 apiece, and a second-half point by Martin McManus. It's back to the drawing-board at the new training time of Mondays at 7.00.
TEAM & SCORERS: Jonathan Arthurs, Chris Kelly, Dermot Coffey, Paul Doole, Niall Boyle, Stephen Gray, Paddy Cassidy, James Johnston 0-1, Aidan O'Neill, Niall Devlin, Martin McManus 0-1, Conal Short, Michael Diffin, Paul Boyd 1-0, Joe Steele. Subs: Matthew Quinn, Neil Poland, Jonathan Johnston, James McAllister, Eoin Costello, Oisin Quinn, Niall Colton, Jason McMurray.
Liatriom 1-18 Bredagh 0-4, Liatriom 5th June Of the seventeen players who travelled to this game, sixteen of them were under-15s, Paddy Cassidy being the exception. It was no surprise then that the Bredagh lads were up against a far taller and more physical team and couldn’t come to terms with their skill and presence in the first-half. Half-time: 1-10 to 0-1. However, the second-half proved to be more productive and we began to compete in midfield and won some breaking ball, but all to no avail. Jonathan ‘Pup’ Arthurs was the man of the match, pulling off some terrific saves.
TEAM & SCORERS: Jonathan Arthurs, Michael Diffin, Dermot Coffey, James McAllister, Niall Boyle, Paddy Cassidy, Paul Doole, Stephen Gray 0-1, Aiden O’Neill 0-1, Niall Devlin, Martin McManus, Conal Short, Joe Stelle, Paul Boyd 0-2, Johnny Johnston, Chris Kelly and Neil Poland.
NOTE: Training resumes at 7pm on Monday evening. Next game against Kilcoo next Thursday - meet 6.10pm at Cherryvale.
Bredagh 0-1 Kilcoo 5-15, Cherryvale 12th June The team were all U-15s as all the other players were studying for exams. We will welcome them back next week as the exams end on Tuesday. Our only score came from the boot of Aiden O’Neill. Although we played some neat stuff at times we were totally outclassed. Michael Diffin was the Man of the Match for Bredagh with some superb kicking. Training is on Sunday at 10am and again at 7pmon Monday evening. Next game against Loughinisland next Thursday - Meet at 6.20pm at Cherryvale.
TEAM & SCORER: Jonathan Arthurs, Michael Diffin, Dermot Coffey, James McAllister, Niall Boyle, Eoin Costello, Paul Doole, Stephen Gray, Aiden O’Neill 0-1, Niall Devlin, Martin McManus, Conal Short, Joe Steele, Paul Boyd, Johnney Johnston, Chris Kelly, Niall Colton, Oisin Quinn and Neil Poland.
Loughinisland 3-8 Bredagh 1-12 , Loughinisland 19th June The younger lads were very confident of a win against Loughinisland as they
had already beaten them in the first round of matches. But last week
Lougfhinisland lost by 29 points to rivals Teconnaught and the country team
must have had morale-boosting plans of their own. Everyone was glad to see the return of James Johnston, Kevin Harte and Paul McCurry but with no Aiden O'Neill and Declan Noble things evened themselves out. The game was always very close with each team taking the lead for short intervals until the last 10 minutes when we lost a three-point lead and conceded 1-2 without reply. This was a very spirited performance though you could tell the lads hadn't
played together or trained together for several weeks by the simple errors
in play. However, things look good for the future even though we have the
unbeaten league leaders next week. There were good performances from the Johnston brothers, James and Johnney, Dermot Coffey, Paul Boyd and Niall Boyle.
TEAM & SCORERS: Jonathan 'Pup' Arthurs, Dermot Coffey, Paddy
Cassidy, James McAllister, Niall Boyle, Stevie Gray, Conal Short,
James Johnston 0-6, Kevin Harte, Martin McManus 0-1, Paul McCurry 0-3,
Niall Devlin, Joe Steele 0-1, Paul Boyd, Johnney Johnston 1-1, Michael
Diffin, Paul Doole, Chris Kelly, Neil Poland and Paul Doole.
NOTE: Training as usual Sunday morning at 10am and Monday
evening at 7pm. Next game against Carryduff on Thursday 26th June. Meet at
Cherryvale 6.45pm.
Bredagh 1-8 Carryduff 2-10, Cherryvale 26th June Our lads kept the league leaders in their sights throughout this match but the failure to win the breaking ball meant that a famous victory was just beyond us. All of the team was up for the challenge and when the management changed
tactics and some personnel everybody went for a surprise win. Michael Diffin
was put in goal for his debut and rarely put a foot wrong. The full-back line of Conal Short, Dermot Coffey and Aiden O'Neill played their part, while captain James Johnston revelled in a new role at centre-half-back. He was flanked by Niall Boyle and Paddy Cassidy, with Paddy settling very well into a new left-half-back position. Kevin Harte and Stephen Gray were the midfield pairing, while a big change came in the half-forward line with a four-man wall! Paul McCurry and Paul Boyd played up the middle with Niall Devlin and Declan Noble on either side. That left a two-man full-forward line of Johnny Johnston and Joe Steele. There was also a quality bench - Martin McManus, James McAllister, Paul Doole, Jonathan Arthurs and Neil Poland.
THE GAME
The game started very tight with each side exchanging points up to half-time, with Carryduff just ahead at 0-5 to 0-4. Bredagh's scores had come from Joe Steele, Paul McCurry, Declan Noble and Niall Devlin. We had to pinch ourselves and appreciate that we were doing so well against the unbeaten league leaders.
After the break Carryduff took command and went into a 1-7 to 0-5 lead, but the Bredagh lads showed their guts and fought back to within a point, thanks to a goal by Paul Boyd and a James Johnston point. Again, Carryduff reasserted themselves and went into a 2-8 to 1-6 lead, but again Bredagh responded with two points from James Johnston. It wasn't enough for a win, but the lads wearing Bredagh shirts were all winners because they played their hearts out for their club. They should be proud of themselves and indeed the management have to take their hats off and applaud their grit and determination. Down football was also a winner as, in the words of the Carryduff managers, this Belfast derby served up a treat of a game. The game was indeed a sporting triumph and anyone watching woudl have realised that they saw a classic game played in a sporting spirit.
Teconnaught 4-9 Bredagh 1-7, Teconnaught 3rd July The Bredagh lads paid heavily for three basic errors in the first-half which led to three simple goals. We started well by keeping the title chasers in our sights in the first 20 minutes. With the score at 0-3 to 0-2 (our points from Kevin Harte and Martin McManus) we were well in the game. Then disaster -three runs from their half-back line led to three goals in five minutes. Heads dropped and we went in 3-6 to 0-2 down. There wasn't much of a team talk at half time as everyone knew what happened. The boys were asked to put the wrongs of the first half to right and this we did. If the game was run over the second half we would have beaten Teconnaught by 1-5 to 1-4 - our scores coming from Stephen Gray, Paul McCurry and 1-3 from James Johnston.
We must learn from this experience. Firstly, never let any player run at the heart of your defence unchallenged and seondly, it is easier to score a point than kick a ball at the keeper and have him make a save or a parry. Their keeper on the night was outstanding, saving what looked like three certain goals.
TEAM: Michael Diffin, James McAlister, Dermot Coffey, Conal Short, Paddy Cassidy, Stephen Gray, Aiden O'Neill, James Johnston, Kevin Harte, Martin McManus, Paul McCurry, Declan Noble, Joe Steele, Paul Boyd, Jonathan
Johnston, Niall Boyle, Paul Doole, Jonathan Arthurs.
Bredagh 1-11 Drumaness 1-7, Cherryvale 10th July Manager Paul Boyd and son Paul Boyd Junior returned from their holidays in Donegal to inspire the team to their first victory in seven. The 'boss' made a few switches that worked well and the full-forward scored the only goal to stop the rot and give Bredagh a boost ahead of the Championship game in a fortnight. The goal came in a first-half where the home side raced out of the blocks into a 1-6 to 0-2 lead. The second-half was tighter, with Drumaness having a goal disallowed for square ball and another legal goal near the end but points from Joe Steele, Kevin Harte and James Johnston kept Bredagh in front until the final whistle. Johnston and Harte actually dominated midfield, with Aidan O'Neill sweeping up behind them. Paddy Cassidy looked sharp at full-back, while Dermot Coffey used the ball well. All of the forwards were lively with good movement and some fine scores. Maybe, just maybe, the team is turning the corner at just the right time.
SCORERS: James Johnston 0-5, Paul Boyd 1-1, Paul McCurry, Michael Diffin, Joe Steele, Kevin Harte & Johnny Johnston, 0-1 each.

Og Sport U-15 7-a-side, Newry Saturday August 9th Two goals by Dermot Coffey and a Quarter-final knock-out of old rivals Banbridge were the highlights of a memorable day for the Bredagh boys at this prestigious event. Once more, the club has been seen to be at the big events in the county and once again they have acquitted themselves very well. Full-back Coffey had never scored for Bredagh before today, so his 2-1 showed that he is well-suited to the smaller game and the defeat of Banbridge reversed a defeat at the Feile earlier in the season, which showed that progress has been made. Bredagh were unlucky to be drawn in a tough group with eventual finalists Kilcoo, Ballymartin and Newry Shamrocks, and although the performances were good, the results meant that we entered the Shield competition. This was where Bredagh defeated Banbridge, before bowing out in the semi-finals to Longstone by 4-6 to 2-3. Considering the fact that the squad had never played sevens football before, and that they took a few games to get the hang of it, this was a fine day's work, which was justly rewarded by Kieran Boyle dipping into his pocket to buy ice-creams on the way home! His son, Niall, also deserves a mention for being our best player, though all thirteen deserve credit and hopefully the experience will have boosted their confidence for future games. The season may be all-but over, but it would be nice to keep the squad together for challenge games and special coaching sessions over the next month or two.
