Hurling/Camogie Academy 2002

Coaches Lorenzo McMullan & Aidan McKegney with the U-10s.

The Bredagh Hurling/Camogie Academy kicked off back on Saturday, May 11th. On the final day of the 8-week course, June 29th, Down captain Noel Sands was on hand to offer advice and see the prizes handed out. The winners ranged from Clare O'Connor and Emmett Dougan in the U-8s to Kathryn Quinn (long puck), Rory Johnston (long puck), Clare McKenna, Pup, and Rory Conway. The Academy was a major success with 65 boys and girls introduced to hurling and camogie. They now all have hurls and the club has a stock of helmets and sliothars. Hopefully, matches will be organised later in the Summer.

Qualified coaches and special guests

The academy benefitted from the expertise of qualified coaches such as Danny Hughes, Lorenzo McMullan, Deirdre Issad, Ann Costello, Ciaran White, Mark Hughes, Aidan McKegney, Gerard Mulligan, Conal Donnelly, Bernadette Fearon and Kelly Murray.

Ballycran senior team manager and former Down Ulster SFC winner Hugh Gilmore made a guest appearance on Saturday, May 25th (see picture below).

Sponsor

Many thanks to RED BULL for providing the refreshments for the course. The drink is ideally suited to hurling/camogie as it improves reaction speed and concentration, and it increases physical endurance! Coaches Susan Fogarty, Deirdre Issad and Ann Costello with the Camogie group.

Equipment

Every player received a hurl in the £10 entry fee, as well as a helmet and refreshments.

WEEK FOUR - DOOLER BREAKS BBC MAN'S FINGER!
Special guest Mark Sidebottom, the BBC football commentator and a senior hurler with Glenariffe, challenged Paul Dooler to a penalty on Saturday morning at training. Mark picked the wrong guy, as Paul's Portaferry grounding meant he fired a mean shot which surprised Mark and has left him with a suspected broken finger! The lesson is - don't mess with Dooler!

WEEK SIX - TRIP TO CASEMENT FOR DOWN V GALWAY
Four young hurlers soak up the 'atmosphere' at Casement Park at the All Ireland Qualifier between Down and Galway.
