Bredagh 1-0 Glenarm 4-0,      Cherryvale    22nd March
This young hurler is just one of dozens of boys and girls enjoying the 'clash of the ash' every Saturday afternoon at Cherryvale. It's amazing to think that there was no youth hurling in Bredagh up to May 2002, yet so much progress has been made. The visit by Glenarm has been one of the highlights of Bredagh hurling in the time since then. The following is a report by the man who made the game happen - Eamonn Mulvenna.

HEROIC DISPLAY BY BREDAGH'S YOUNG HURLERS
Under-10 Challenge - Bredagh 1-0 Glenarm Shane O'Neills 4-0

Bredagh’s young heroes nearly got the better of Glenarm in their first ever match, but Glenarm’s 100 years of experience told in the end. With a fine day for hurling the first-half started briskly with great ground hurling on display from both sides. The teams were evenly-matched with the Bredagh team giving as good as they got.

FIRST-EVER GOAL BY RONAN McKEGNEY
Ryan Mitchell for Glenarm scored first but Bredagh were quickly down the field and Ronan McKegney finished a fine flowing move by smashing the sliothar to the Glenarm net. A couple of late goals by Glenarm at the end of the first half saw the teams change ends with Glenarm leading by 3-0 to 1-0. The second half was ‘open’ hurling and the greater experience of the Glenarm side, especially from their more ‘senior’ players, saw them through with a couple of points to spare. However, Bredagh’s heroes can hold their heads high, the game was fiercely competitive with no quarter asked for or given.

BREDAGH'S STARS
The whole panel of 30 Bredagh players all got a chance to shine during the hour and everyone of them were a credit to the new Bredagh shirts. Stars to look for in the future include Tim Durkan, a sturdy full-back whose motto of ‘thou shalt not pass’ was clearly evident on the day. Ben McCaughey at centre-half-back showed why he was recently awarded ‘Clubman of the Year’ with some great ground hurling supported by Ciaran McFarland and Michael Guirou on either flank setting up attacks for the speedy Bredagh forwards. Midfielders Daniel Russell and Emmett Dougan covered every blade of grass on the field and were well-supported in the half-forwards by Lorcan McMullan and Ronan McKegney. The Bredagh full-forward line was ably led by Ruari Sheridan and corner-forwards Conor Costello and Daniel Mulvenna showed great courage and tenacity against their bigger opponents and have two more years to hone their skills at this level.

100 YEARS v 100 DAYS
Stars for Glenarm were Jake Hamilton and the Mulvenna trio of Ciaran, Liam and Rory and no doubt there are a few future Antrim stars in this Glenarm contingent. To finish on a lighter note a young Glenarm hurler on travelling home quoted his Bredagh opponent as saying at the start of the match ‘this is our first match and you lot have been playing for 100 years!’ Maybe he was a bit intimidated with Shane O’Neills proud history!

Bredagh Panel: James Harriott, Aidan McCabe, Daniel Mulvenna, Lorcan McMullan, Donal McKeown, Emmett Dougan, Michael Guirou, Matthew McMullan, Ciaran McFarland, Daniel Higgins, Ruari Sheridan, Michael Deery, James Day, John Kelly, Tim Durkan, Paul Carson, Ryan McGarry, Tomas Flannigan, Ben McCaughey, Daniel Russell, Jack Garlin, Aidan Napier, Conor Norwood, Peter McKenna, Niall Irwin, Sean McVeigh, Conor Costello, Ronan McKegney, Dominic McConville.
Saturday sessions are fun!

Bredagh v Portaferry,      Cherryvale    April 26th
Two games were played against the boys from the Ards who showed super skills which have been honed from years of practice. Bredagh held their own well, and gained invaluable experience. Our appreciation goes to the Portaferry club for paying us this visit.

Bredagh 2-1 Carryduff 1-0,      Cherryvale    May 24th
Historic Win for Bredagh’s Young Heroes
Bredagh U-10 hurlers recorded their first-ever victory - the young heroes put on a magnificent display of hurling to overhaul Carryduff in a fiercely contested derby game. The first half was played in wet conditions with both teams displaying great hurling skills. In this period both defences dominated. Michael Guirov in Bredagh’s goal kept a clean sheet with the support of Aidan McCabe at full back flanked by Conor Norwood and Michael Deery. Many of the Carryduff attacks were snuffed out by the Bredagh wingbacks Ruairi Sheridan and Jim Hamill who were well covered by Danny Russell at centre half. As a result the first half ended all square with neither team scoring. After coach Jim Sheridan’s pep-talk at half-time, the Bredagh team came out with all guns blazing and after sustained Bredagh pressure the first score came when the sliother broke to Ruairi Sheridan who drove it into the right hand cornor of the Carryduff net. This score really got the whole team going and the superior skills of Bredagh’s two midfielders, Tim Durkan and Emmet Dougan, were the main reason for Bredagh’s dominance during this period. Bredagh’s half forward line led by Ronan McKegney and flanked by Jack Holywood and Niall Irwin were playing great first time hurling which led to Bredagh’s second goal when Catriona Campbell latched onto a through ball by Paul Carson to crash the sliothar to the net. Bredagh continued to attack with Daniel Mulvenna, Emer Acton and Michael Cassidy going close with great groundstrokes. Bredagh’s final score came with five minutes remaining and it was worth waiting for when Tim Durkan picked up the sliothar forty yards from goal and from an acute angle stroked a magnificent point over the bar. This point stirred Carryduff into attack and their full forward Robert McLaughlin scored a great goal in the final minute. When the final whistle sounded there was a great roar from the Bredagh supporters as they witnessed the first win for Bredagh’s young heroes. Our U-10s can look forward to many more victories and with great displays from the younger squad players like Eoin Acton the future looks bright.

Carryduff 0-0 Bredagh 7-0,      Carryduff    Tuesday, June 3rd

Bredagh Under-10 Hurling Team.

BREDAGH U-10 HURLERS DO THE ‘DOUBLE’ ON CARRYDUFF
With constant wind and rain all day Tuesday the Bredagh coaches waited anxiously at Cherryvale hoping enough players would turn up to travel to Carryduff. In the end 34 players turned up! It must have been Jim Nelson’s pep talk on the Saturday before – but at least everybody got a game as Bredagh and Carryduff fielded two teams each - ‘senior’ and ‘junior’.

'SENIOR' GAME
The boys put on a masterful display of hurling to completely overwhelm their rivals and notch up an away win to sit beside their home victory a fortnight ago. Playing into the wind and rain in the first half Bredagh’s defence held out an attacking Carryduff with Michael Guirov recording a clean sheet with the help of his full-back line of Ciaran McFarland, Aidan McCabe and Joseph Shields. The half-back line of Jack Hollywood, Daniel Russell and Donal McKeown played excellent ground hurling throughout the game with Donal being rewarded with a fine goal. As we have come to expect Tim Durkan and Emmet Dougan controlled the midfield with Tim also getting on the score sheet. However it was the Bredagh forwards who really did the damage supported by the strong wind in the second half.

Hat-trick Hero
Centre half forward Niall Irwin was the star of the show with three superb goals, the last being the most memorable as he doubled on a bouncing ball from 25 yards out and sent the sliothar flying into the top of the Bredagh net. Niall got good support from Ruairi Sheridan and Ronan McKegney who also managed two great goals. Bredagh’s full forward line didn’t get on the score sheet but that was no reflection on their hurling ability with Lorcan McMullan, Paul Carson and Gerard McCartan leading the Carryduff backline a merry dance, ably supported by newcomer Robert Graham when coming off the subs bench.

NEXT GAME A BIG TEST
Bredagh’s young heroes seem to have got the taste for winning with back to back victories under their belt but no doubt sterner opposition in the shape of Belfast side St Paul’s a week on Saturday will test their ability to the full.

'JUNIOR' GAME
On an adjoining pitch the junior U-10s put on a hurling showcase emphasising the strength in depth of the squad. Despite being camped in the Carryduff half for most of the game Bredagh were shocked when they went a goal down to a Carryduff breakaway scored by Bredagh man Peter Horner who along with Aaron Maguire was on ‘loan’ to Carryduff. Both players played excellent hurling throughout the game and will not be going on loan again! But the young heroes were not to be beaten and went close on numerous occasions before deservedly getting the equalising score which was finished to the net by Dominic McConville after good work by Emer Acton and Michael Deery. Best for the Bredagh ‘juniors’ were Daniel Mulvenna in goals well supported in defence by Jamie Durkan, James Harriott, Lucy Russell and Dean O’Hara.

Sound Pedigree for the future
The forward quartet of Daire and Eve McPeake and their cousins Anna and Gareth Lyttle showed they were ‘chips off the old block’ – their Great Uncle Dan Gibson starred for Antrim (and Glenarm) in the 1950s. The great Wexford star, Nicky Rackard, named Gibson as the toughest opponent he ever came across in his career – as they were constantly in the thick of the action. The full forward line of Ruairi Doyle, Eoin Acton and Catriona Campbell deserve a mention as they terrorised the Carryduff defence and were instrumental in forcing the draw.

SUMMARY: All in all it was a great night, a great squad turnout and a great win. On this performance there is a bright future for Bredagh’s young heroes!

Bredagh 6-2 Eire Og 2-1,      Cherryvale    June 18th
This was an excellent game of hurling and the game was a much tighter affair than the scoreline suggests. Eire Og exerted early pressure and were rewarded by a well executed goal. Bredagh replied through Ronan McKegney.
Save of the Day
Eire Og went ahead again with a fine point which could have easily been a goal only for an excellent save from Michael Guirov tipping the ball over the bar. Eire Og continued to dominate and should have been well ahead only for resolute defending from Aidan McCabe supported by Joseph Shields, Jack Holywood and Stephen O’Connor. Just before half-time Bredagh broke away and Lorcan McMullan netted from close range, which saw, Bredagh change ends with a 2-point advantage.
Tim's Wonder Double Strike
The second half saw a total transformation in the Bredagh team. The young heroes showed great determination, hunger and aggression as they put on an excellent display of ground hurling which was lacking in the first half. Man of the Match, Tim Durkan was the difference between the teams and put on a virtuouso performance in midfield scoring two wonderful goals in quick succession, the second one from easily 40 yards. It was all Bredagh now with Emmet Dougan turning every ball sent forward by Eire Og. Up front Ruairi Sheridan, Michael Cassidy, Michael Deery and Aaron Maguire were all dominating their men. There was also impressive displays from Peter Homer, Robert Graham, Stephen Lavery, Dominic McConville and Daniel Mulvenna. All this pressure paid at last with Gerard McCartan doubling the ball to the net with five minutes to go and just on the final whistle Niall Irwin smashed the ball through a crowded goal mouth into the bottom hand corner of the net.

Eire Og 1-0 Bredagh 2-0,      Woodlands    June 24th
A dramatic goal from Ronan McKegney decided this cracking contest in the very last minute. The final whistle was about to be blown when Ronan doubled on the sliothar and sent it to the Eire Og net. There were great scenes of celebration among the 22-strong Bredagh panel, their mentors and supporters. The home side had led by a goal to nil, but the boys showed their mettle by coming from behind to win. Tim Durkan goaled from a 30-yard free and then came Ronan McKegney's wonder strike.

Under-8s v Darragh Cross,      Cherryvale    June 10th
Bredagh hurlers fielded an Under-8 team for the first time ever to accommodate fellow gaels Darragh Cross who brought an U-8 team with their U-12s to Cherryvale. The performance was to a very high standard given it was their first outing. The match was a very close affair with Cross taking the lead before Bredagh equalised through Lorcan McMullan. Cross again took the lead but despite sustained pressure Bredagh could not force the ball over the line for the all important equaliser. Overall it was a fine performance for their first match with Lorcan McMullan picking up the Man of the Match Award. Other future stars who showed on the evening included Aaron Maguire and Gareth Lyttle. Also a special mention for Conor Costello who had a great game in goals with his long puck-outs a highlight of the game. A point worth noting for the future health of hurling at the club was the size of the panel available – 22! The panel included: Daniel Mulvenna, Lorcan McMullan, Conor Costello, Daire McReake, Conal Doyle, Ruairi Doyle, Catriona Campbell, Ossian O’Callaghan, Emer Acton, Jim Hamill, Ryan Donaghy, Gareth Lyttle, Eoin Acton, Emer Kelly, Michael Deery, Jamie Durkan, Ella Durkan, Aidan Donaghy and Bria Kane.

Ballycran U-9 Tournament,      Ballycran    Saturday August 16th
Three generations of the Costello family were pictured at Ballycran in a wonderful photo taken by Carlo Angelone. 7-year-old Conor posed for the camera after scoring the goal that clinched third place for Bredagh, while his dad Frank Junior and grandad Frank Senior stood proudly in the background. In all, sixteen boys and girls enjoyed a great day in the sun at the competition, with great performances from the likes of Lorcan McMullan, Seamus McCloskey, Joe Shiels, Dario Angelone, Jack Holywood, Ronan McKegney and Mark Quinn.

Carryduff 2-1 Bredagh 2-0,      Carryduff    Tuesday September 9th
A big squad of players turned out for this challenge game at Carryduff and were unlucky not to at least snatch a draw in an exciting finish. Bredagh trailed by 2-1 to 1-0, with our goal from Ruairi Sheridan, going into the last ten minutes. They applied serious pressure and were rewarded with a marvellous long-distance goal from Tim Durkan. Then, with seconds to go, Tim sent another ball into the home goalmouth. Deccie Magee collected the ball in his hand, but as he swung to strike, the final whistle sounded! Still, it was a brave effort and a good, close game which was enjoyed by a big support for both teams.
