Championship Reports
Bredagh 8-3 Ballela 3-0, Saturday September 6th, Downpatrick
Yes this amazing team has done it again! After winning the Feile Shield in their first competitive outing way back in June, they have finished the season with a sensational victory over Ballela to win the All County B Championship. They took the title in some style in perfect conditions at Downpatrick before a good-sized crowd, many of whom had made the trip from South Belfast to support the boys.

This game was effectively won in the first-half although not on the scoreboard as Bredagh only led by four points at the interval. Bredagh played with such intensity and passion in this period, soaking up the best that Ballela could throw at them, that they effectively broke the opposition's resolve. Ballela started brightly and playing with wind advantage they took the lead with a well-worked goal. However, Bredagh’s defence stood firm and midway through the half the turning point came - in a devastating five-minute spell of deadly finishing, we bagged three goals. The first was a gem from Sean Irwin, who soloed 20 yards before blasting an unstoppable shot to the Ballela net. The other two goals came from the hard-working Matthew Holywood - both were beautifully struck ground shots after good support play from Conal Doherty and Matthew McAfee. To their credit Ballela responded with a goal of their own. Bredagh finished the half with a cracking point from the brilliant Ruairi Johnston. Half-time: Bredagh 3-1 Ballela 2-0
Turning round with the wind on their backs, Bredagh were totally focused on the job in hand and were in no mood to let this one slip. They really turned on the style and Ballela simply had no answer. Eoin Costello, who was operating at full-forward due to injury, began to find his range and gave an exhibition of point-scoring from open play, eventually finishing on 1-4 for the match. Cormac Hughes delivered another five-star performance at centre-field and also found the net. Substitute Ben Horner hit a ’piledriver’ goal, but the best score of the game was the last - a deft flick by Sean Irwin to an Emmett Costello high cross. DJ himself would have been proud of this one!
Special mention must go to goalkeeper Mark Devlin who brought off a series of top-class saves over the hour and the defence in which Paddy Woods, Niall Nolan and Niall Colton starred. They held Ballela to a single score in the second-half and that was a well-struck penalty right at the death. Oisin Quinn was excellent at midfield alongside Cormac Hughes, while Costello, Irwin and Johnston stole the show up front.
This was certainly a victory to savour and a measure of how this young team has progressed in such a short time is the fact that they were beaten at home by this same Ballela team in the early part of the league series.
TEAM & SCORERS: Mark Devlin, Michael Mullan, Paddy Woods, John McKenna, Niall Nolan, Niall Colton, Rowan Smart, Cormac Hughes 1-0, Oisin Quinn, Matthew Holywood 2-0), Ruairi Johnston 0-1, Matthew McAfee, Conal Doherty, Eoin Costello 1-4 and Sean Irwin 3-0. Subs: Ben Horner 1-0, Emmett Costello, Donal Hughes, Donal McKegney, Michael Magee, Pearse Leitch, Kevin Duffin, Daniel Higgins.
League Reports
Bredagh 6-0 Ballycran 7-2, Cherryvale 12th April
Bredagh U-14s, pictured here at Saturday afternoon training, are in an historic year - their first in competitive hurling. The team has been entered for League and Championship, starting with the Feile in May. A warm-up game against Ballycran in April showed that the boys are ready for the challenges ahead.
U-14s GIVE BALLYCRAN A FRIGHT IN CHALLENGE GAME
The famous black and amber of Ballycran appeared at Cherryvale to make a little bit of history - they're the first team to play Bredagh U-14s at our pitch. They were returning a visit we made to them in 2002 for our first ever youth hurling challenge game. We lost that one hands down, but this time the boys in maroon more than held their own with determined and skilful play, only losing to a few late goals. The progress made in just ten months has been astonishing. Matthew McAfee set the ball rolling with our first goal, while Sean Irwin followed up and there was also great work by full-backs Paddy Woods and Cormac White, Matthew Quinn in the half-backs, and by Paul Doole and Aidan O'Neill in midfield.
A WORD FROM THEIR MANAGER...
Bredagh led at half-time by four goals to two, and after the match Ballycran Manager Dermot O'Prey was mighty relieved. 'I felt that a draw would would have been a fairer reflection on the play. I am amazed by the progress Bredagh have made since the same two teams played at Ballycran last August. You have nothing to fear from playing in the East Down League'.
TEAM & SCORERS: Jonathan Arthurs, Kevin Duffin, Paddy Woods, Mark Devlin, Matthew Quinn, Cormac White, Michael McMullan, Aidan O'Neill, Paul Doole, Conal Doherty, Cormac Hughes, Sean Irwin 2-0, Niall Nolan 1-0, Matthew McAfee 2-0, Sean Lecky. Subs: Donal Hughes, Donal McKegney, Ruairi Johnson 1-0, Ben Horner.
Man of the Match - Sean Irwin
U-16s LINK UP WITH EIRE OG
Four Bredagh lads are being signed up to play with Eire Og in the Antrim Championship and League for this season only. Paul Doole, Aidan O'Neill, Jonathan Arthurs and Matthew Quinn are getting invaluable match experience with the West Belfast club.
BREDAGH WIN SHIELD!, Liatroim May 10th
'I thought you said Bredagh couldn't play hurling!' - this comment was made by one onlooker at the end of the Shield Final and summed up the magnitude and significance of the achievement.
Bredagh Under-14s were competing in the Feile for the very first time and were up against a Newry Shamrocks team who fully expected to 'walk' the Final and retain the trophy. They were in for a shock as the Belfast boys gave everything they had to snatch a dramatic extra-time victory.
HISTORIC ACHIEVEMENT
Eoin Costello was the individual star in the Final with all of Bredagh's scores in the 1-2 to 1-1 triumph. Both sides finished normal time with a goal and a point, but Bredagh wanted it more and with Costello's clinching score from a free, they threw themselves into tackles to win silverware for the hurling side of the club - a truly historic achievement!

Ready for action - Star player Eoin Costello pictured before a friendly at Kilclief.
Earlier in the day we lost to host side Liatriom with an understrength side. Cormac Hughes, Niall Nolan and Conall Doherty arrived just minutes before the start, and a few others were on their way. Cormac scored Bredagh's only point from a long-range free. Then Eoin Costello and Donal Hughes arrived for the Shield semi-final with Ballyvarley and the whole squad rose to the challenge. We beat Ballyvarley by 4-1 to 1-0 with two goals from Costello, one each from Ben Horner and Sean Irwin, and a point from Cormac Hughes. In the Final, Hughes and Costello were superb at midfield, while Mark Devlin was a revelation in goals with several outstanding stops.
PRESENTATION
There will be a special presentation of the Shield and medals to the victorious squad in the coming weeks. Thanks also to the parents who travelled to the Feile, and well done to the coaches for all the hard work over the last twelve months. This is a just reward for their efforts and a great boost to all of the hurlers as well as the wider club.
THE HISTORY-MAKING SQUAD:
Donal McKegney, Michael Johnston, Paddy Woods, Mark Devlin, Matthew McAfee, Cormac White, Daniel Higgins, Oisin Quinn, Cormac Hughes, Conall Doherty, Niall Nolan, Sean Irwin, Ben Horner, Rowan Smart, Charlie McGrath, Stevie McSherry, Donal Hughes and Eoin Costello (captain).
DOUBLE WINNERS
Conall Doherty, Cormac Hughes and Niall Nolan also won an U-12 South Belfast soccer Cup medal earlier in the day.
NOTE: There is a team picture in the Down Recorder newspaper.
Bredagh 5-4 Kilclief 0-2, Cherryvale Friday May 16th U14 Hurlers record first League win
Bredagh had an emphatic win over an understrength Kilclief team in their first outing in the East Down League. Bredagh made light of the damp conditions at Cherryvale and got off to a flyer with two early goals from their most dangerous forward, young Ben Horner. Some terrific midfield play from Eoin Costello and Cormac Hughes set up a number of chances for the forwards and Sean Irwin got in on the act when he too blasted two goals to the Kilclief net. Ben Horner completed his hat-trick and Costello tagged on a point to leave the half-time score 5-1 to 0-0 in favour of the home team.
After the break Bredagh took their foot off the pedal but still recorded three well-taken points from play courtesy of Conall Doherty, Costello and Cormac Hughes. Kilclief fought hard in the second half and notched up two points of their own.
This was a good team performance in which our half-back-line of Oisin Quinn, Niall Colton and Rowan Smart were virtually inpenetrable.
TEAM & SCORERS: Mark Devlin, Donal McKegney, Paddy Woods, Michael Mullan, Oisin Quinn, Niall Colton, Rowan Smart, Cormac Hughes (0-1), Owen Costello (0-2), Sean Irwin (2-0), Cormac White, Conall Doherty (0-1), Ben Horner (3-0), Matthew Mullan, Donal Hughes, Kevin Duffin, Daniel Higgins.
Liatroim 4-16 Bredagh 2-6, Liatroim Monday June 2nd Despite the defeat, these young Bredagh hurlers gave a performance they can be proud of. Liatriom were a very big and skilful team with some excellent players but they were not 16 points better than Bredagh. The refereeing by the home official was diabolical as he time and again gave Liatriom scoreable frees when quite frankly no foul had been committed. Clearly they were rattled by the Bredagh upstarts and wanted to win at any cost.
The early exchanges were closely contested and with Liatriom having the wind advantage there was a lot of pressure on the Bredagh defence. Mark Devlin again brought off a number of great saves and Paddy Woods played a stormer at full-back. Liatriom began to edge ahead but Bredagh hit back with a well-taken goal from Ben Horner from a tight angle. Eoin Costello converted a free to leave the half-time score 3-9 to 1-1.
After the break and with the wind in their backs, Cormac Hughes and Eoin Costello exerted their influence at midfield and Bredagh came right back into contention, scoring 1-3 without reply to take them within striking distance. The goal came from a great strike from play by Niall Colton who was excellent over the hour. Liatriom knew they had a game on their hands and the tempo lifted. The ref at this point came into his own with some baffling decisions. They increased their lead but at no stage of this game did the Bredagh lads drop their heads and were rewarded with 2two further Costello points.
Rowan Smart again showed well in defence and up front Cormac White went through terrific work. An all-round spirited performance from the 16 who played.
TEAM & SCORERS: Mark Devlin, Michael Mullan, Paddy Woods, Matthew McAfee, Osin Quinn, Niall Colton 1-0, Rowan Smart, Cormac Hughes 0-1 Eoin Costello 0-5, Conall Doherty, Sean Irwin, Cormac White, Emmett Costello, Ben Horner 1-0, Donal Hughes. Sub; Donal McKegney for Michael Mullan.
Bredagh 12-6 Castlewellan 1-2, Cherryvale Friday May 30th Bredagh’s reputation as a hurling force in Down was enhanced with a superb win over Castlewellan. The final scoreline indicates the dominance Bredagh held but they did not have it all their own way. Despite playing with the wind in the first half Bredagh fell behind as Castlewellan took the game to them. Five minutes gone and 1-1 down, things looked bad, but the boys buckled down to the task and began to get stuck in against a physically bigger opposition. The defence closed up shop with Rowan Smart playing some inspired hurling ably assisted by Niall Colton and Paddy Woods. Once they got into their stride Eoin Costello and Cormac Hughes gave an exhibition of superb hurling at midfield and were joint men of the match. Once the forwards were given a good supply of possession the scores began to flow and by half time Bredagh were three goals to the good (4-1 to 1-1).
After the break Mark Devlin, who had taken over in the Bredagh goals, pulled off two magnificent early saves to effectively break Castlewellan’s resolve and after that Bredagh never looked back, playing some brilliant hurling. It was hard to pick out individuals up front as all six starred and some great scores were engineered. Conall Doherty, Sean Irwin and Cormac White each contributed two goals. Niall Nolan (1-0) and Kevin McIlroy (0-1) also got on the score sheet. Late subs Ben Horner and Donal Hughes both scored superb points from tight angles.
TEAM & SCORERS: Oisin Quinn, Mark Devlin, Paddy Woods, Emmett Costello, Niall Colton, Rowan Smart (1-0), Matthew McAfee, Cormac Hughes (2-2), Eoin Costello (2-1), Sean Irwin (2-0), Cormac White (2-0), Niall Nolan (1-0), Kevin McIlroy (0-1), Conall Doherty (2-0), Donal McKegney, Daniel Higgins, Donal Hughes (0-1) and Ben Horner (0-1).
Bredagh 3-2 Ballela 4-7, Cherryvale June 13th This was the clash between one of the oldest hurling clubs in Down and one of the newest. It was Bredagh's first match in the B League, and as anticipated it proved to be the toughest. Played in perfect conditions at Cherryvale, Ballela started strongly and in the early exchanges, with a strong wind in their backs, notched up 2-3 without reply. This was a good team but Bredagh settled and despite losing star full-back Paddy Woods (injured) they clawed back the deficit. Eoin Costello blasted a lovely goal to leave six points between the teams at half-time. Bredagh were told at the interval to continue as they had finished the first half, and they did just that. Niall Nolan drove low to the Ballela net, Eoin Costello, the outstanding player on show, lobbed over a point and young Ben Horner smacked in another great goal. Bredagh were ahead, the wind in their backs and with 10 minutes to go, a shock looked on but then a strange thing happened. The Ballela mentors brought their star keeper, who looked a little 'mature' for his U-14 status, out to midfield where he ran riot, allowing Ballela to notch up another 2-4 to one further
Costello point. Niall Colton at centre-half pushed Costello hard for Man of the Match. Oisin Quinn, Emmett Costello and Michael Mullan also defended brilliantly. Cormac Hughes worked hard in the middle while up front Niall Nolan, Ben Horner and Conal Doherty were outstanding.
TEAM & SCORERS: Mark Devlin, Michael Mullan, Paddy Woods, Matthew Mullan, Oisin Quinn. Niall Colton, Rowan Smart, Cormac Hughes, Eoin Costello (1-2), Cormac White, Niall Nolan (1-0), Conall Doherty, Donal Hughes, Ben Horner (1-0) and Emmett Costello.

Newry Shamrocks 2-4 Bredagh 9-3, S'rocks June 20th This was an opportunity to gauge how this team had developed since their first competitive outing: the County Feile back in early May. On that occasion they defeated this same Shamrocks team by a solitary point after extra time in the final. On Friday night the winning margin was 20 points and this is a credit to the hard work and dedication these young hurlers have shown in the intervening weeks. Captain Eoin Costello, despite injury, played through the pain barrier and notched up a personal tally of 5-2. He played at full forward while Niall Colton deputised magnificently at midfield along with the brilliant Cormac Hughes. Mark Devlin in goals had another sound 60 minutes and Paddy Woods, Rowan Smart and Osin Quinn were outstanding in defence. Up front Costello had able assistants in Donal Hughes, Niall Nolan and Conall Doherty. By half time the writing was on the wall for Newry as they trailed 5-2 to 1-3 despite having wind advantage, Costello having bagged 3-2 and a goal each from the Hughes brothers. Newry to their credit came back strongly in the second half but Bredagh held it together to win comfortably in the end. Bredagh took some great scores, with one of the best being the last goal, Niall Nolan’s flick to the corner of the net from an angled cross by Conal Doherty.
TEAM & SCORERS: Mark Devlin, Michael Mullan, Paddy Woods, Emmett Costello, Cormac White, Rowan Smart, Osin Quinn, Cormac Hughes (2-1), Niall Colton, Niall Nolan (1-0), Conall Doherty, Ben Horner, Matthew Mullan, Owen Costello (5-2), Donal Hughes (1-0). Sub Brian McFlynn for Matthew Mullan.

Kilclief 4-6 Bredagh 4-2, Kilclief August 1st Kilclief won the game but Bredagh took the points as the home side conceded beforehand and used over-age players. It proved to be a very good contest with Bredagh showing tremendous heart, commitment and skill to rattle the bigger Kilclief side in the second-half. The first period was disappointing as the ring-rusty Bredagh team conceded goals and points at will, but after the break all sixteen players got stuck in and refused to shirk from the challenge.
Two well-taken goals from Matthew McAfee and a piledriver from Sean Nolan hauled Bredagh back into the contest, and only some fine goalkeeping kept Eoin Costello and others at bay. There was only one point in it when a Kilclief effort luckily dropped into the net in the last minute. This was a very useful run-out ahead of next week's crunch game at Castlewellan.
Castlewellan 4-0 Bredagh 2-6 , C'wellan Friday August 8th

Hurling can be a cruel game - battling Bredagh outplayed their bigger opponents for most of this game and were unlucky not to kill off Castlewellan when a goalbound effort come back off a post and when a goal was disallowed, but in the closing minutes Castlewellan got out of jail with two late scrambled goals. It was an injustice but at least we didn't lose. The draw probably means a play-off with the same team, and the extra match will stand to the fast-improving Bredagh team. In the first-half, the city boys were mightily impressive with an array of hurling skills on show, not to mention two goals from Donal Hughes (one a real cracker after a great solo run by Oisin Quinn) and five terrific points, three from Eoin Costello and one each from Matthew McAfee and a kicked effort from Cormac Hughes. We only scored one point in the second-half, from an Eoin Costello free, but the same player had a shot hit the post and from the rebound Emmett Costello was ruled to be in the square when sending the sliothar to the net. Castlewellan struck with two late goals, and in the last few seconds Emmett Costello was send tumbling to the ground under the posts but amazingly no free was awarded and the full-time whistle was blown. NOTE: This means that we can still finish in the top two teams, who will play off for the B Championship.
Bredagh 6-2 Castlewellan 1-3, Teconnaught Wednesday August 20th The teams drew on their last meeting, but Bredagh had players such as John McKenna and Matthew Holywood returning, and in Peter Graham they had a two-goal hero. Sean Irwin added another late in the game, but in truth this was a mighty team effort, with all observers being impressed by the style and passion shown by the Bredagh outfit. The result means that the city boys enter a League decider against Ballela.
TEAM & SCORERS: Mark Devlin, Michael Mullan, Paddy Woods, Ruairi Johnston, Niall Nolan, Oisin Quinn, John McKenna, Cormac Hughes 0-1, Eoin Costello 1-1, Conall Doherty, Matthew Holywood, Matthew McAfee, Donal Hughes, Sean Irwin 2-0 and Ben Horner 1-0.
