BREDAGH GAC IS DELIGHTED TO WELCOME ALL OF THESE SCHOOLS TO THE 'BIGGER AND BETTER' SOUTH BELFAST SCHOOLS LEAGUE.
COMPETITION FORMAT
All schools will send teams on every Tuesday afternoon from May 6th through to June 17th, with the seven teams split into two groups of three and four. The first group will have the three strongest teams playing one another in 20-minute 12-a-side games on a small-sized pitch using mobile goalposts. The second group will be played out on an adjoining pitch, with the four teams playing shorter 10-minute games. The winner of this second group each week will be promoted to the first group for the following week, with the bottom side dropping down accordingly.
BEST PLAYERS
One player will be named from each group in each week as the 'Player of the Week', with a 'Player of the Tournament named after the Finals Day on June 17th. A knock-out competition will also be held on that date to find the SOUTH BELFAST SCHOOLS LEAGUE champions for 2003.
HOLY ROSARY WIN DAY ONE, Cherryvale Tuesday May 6th GROUP ONE

St Matthews 2-2 St Brides 0-1
Holy Rosary 4-4 St Matthews 1-2
Winners - HOLY ROSARY

Player of the Week - JACK DUFFIN (HR)
REPORT
Reigning champions Holy Rosary kicked off the 2003 competition with two wins to finish top of Group One and so set the pace for the rest to try and match. In their first game, Matthew Cross bagged three goals in the defeat of St Brides, while Kaelan Devlin also got on the scoresheet. Jamie Cleary was outstanding in defence, Jack Duffin was named 'Player of the Week', and Ciaran Fitzpatrick scored 1-1 in the defeat of St Matthews in the deciding game. In between, St Matthews beat St Brides, who were the unfortunate side having to play two games in-a-row. So well done Holy Rosary, but next week the top group will be a lot tougher as the St Bernards P7s will be back from their break and St Michaels are coming up from Group Two, where they were very impressive. This means that Group One will have four teams next week.
GROUP TWO
St Michaels 4-3 St Bernards 1-0
St Josephs 1-0 Scoil an Droichid 0-1
St Michaels 4-2 St Josephs 0-0
St Bernards 2-1 Scoil an Droichid 1-0
St Bernards 3-1 St Josephs 0-1
St Michaels 2-3 Scoil an Droichid 1-0
Winners - ST MICHAELS - promoted to Group One for next week

Player of the Week - MICHAEL MAC GABHAN
REPORT
This was a brilliant day's football with exciting play, great entertainment for the supporters and a little bit of history with St Josephs and Scoil an Droichid both playing their first ever competitive gaelic football games. They both accounted themselves very well, with Michael MacGahan scooping the 'Player of the Week' award ahead of all of the other players on stronger teams. St Josephs won the battle of the new boys (and girls) with a winning goal from Stephen Gibson. Aaron Ross scored a point in this game for Scoil an Droichid and he also got their goal in the game with St Bernards. Caoimhín O'Corra got their goal in the last game against St Michaels, who won the Group with three victories. They scored ten goals in total and these were their scorers: Johnny Lee 3-1, Ruairi Johnston 2-0, Charlie McGrath 2-0, Ben Horner 1-2, Conor Magee 0-3, Michael Diddles Magee 1-0, Donal McKegney 1-0, Danny Donnelly 0-2. St Bernards came second with terrific displays from Niall Wright and Daniel Nolan, who each scored a cracking goal. Niall scored all 2-1 in the defeat of Scoil an Droichid, including a screamer into the top corner, while Danny scored a brilliant goal in the defeat of St Josephs. Niall totalled 3-1 over the three games, and Danny got 1-1. Niall Byrne and Luke Bowen added goals against St Josephs, for whom Conor O'Reilly replied with a point. St Michaels are promoted to Group One, while St Bernards will also play in the top section next week, leaving Scoil an Droichid, St Josephs and St Brides to play fewer and longer games.
NOTE: There is a photo-spread from all games every week in THE SOUTH BELFAST NEWS, out on Fridays.

Player of the Week - Conor McCloskey
REPORT
A marvellous individual display by Player of the Week Conor McCloskey and a terrific team effort by the rest of the St Bernards players saw them knock reigning champions Holy Rosary off top spot. The Sunnyside boys took the overall title in 2002 and were the best team on Day One of the 2003 League last week, but they were unable to contain St Bernards on Day Two. McCloskey bagged two goals in the decisive game with Holy Rosary, followed by a point from Niall Donnelly and a cracking goal from Donal Hughes on the final whistle. Jack Duffin replied with a point in the 3-1 to 0-1 scoreline. Earlier, St Bernards beat St Matthews by 0-5 to 0-0 with points from Donnelly (2), McCloskey, Conal Devlin and Danny Nolan. And in their other game, McCloskey scored 2-1 in a big win over St Michaels. The Ravenhill Road boys did well apart from that, as they held Holy Rosary to a scoreless draw in the first ten-minute game and then they beat St Matthews with two goals from Ben Horner and points from Conor Magee and Donal McKegney. Michael Magee was their best player in defence.
GROUP TWO
St Josephs 0-2 Scoil an Droichid 0-6
St Josephs 1-2 St Brides 0-5
Scoil an Droichid 1-3 St Brides 3-5
Winners - ST BRIDES

Player of the Week - Peter Mooney
REPORT:
Scoil an Droichid enjoyed their first ever victory as a gaelic football team, beating St Josephs Ballyhackamore in the opening game by 0-6 to 0-2. Michael MacGabhann got four of the points and Eithne Nic an Bheatha and Caoimhín Mag Eachaidh scored one each. St Brides then drew with St Josephs and beat Scoil an Droichid in the decider, thanks to scores from Player of the Week Peter Mooney, Jack Lavery, Barry Monaghan and Michael Webb.
NEXT WEEK
St Brides are staying in Group Two, along with Scoil and Droichid, St Josephs and St Matthews, so there will be four teams and shorter games. Group One will have St Bernards, St Michaels and Holy Rosary in longer games.
ST MATTHEWS WIN DAY THREE, Cherryvale Tuesday May 20th St Matthews and Holy Rosary won their respective sections with full points from their games. The black and whites from the Short Strand finished top of Group Two, while the Sunnyside Boys regained the number one position from St Bernards in Group One.
GROUP ONE
St Bernards 1-0 St Michaels 2-0
Holy Rosary 2-1 St Michaels 0-3
St Bernards 1-3 Holy Rosary 4-2
Winners - HOLY ROSARY
Player of the Week - Kaelan Devlin (HR)
REPORT
The 2002 champions regrouped after last week's loss to St Bernards (and a draw with St Michaels) to win Day Three with two victories. Manager John Cahill encouraged his players to go back to basics and concentrate throughout the games, and it worked with a four-point defeat of St Michaels and an eight-point win against St Bernards. Down footballer and referee for the games, Shane King, selected Bredagh Under-10 Kaelan Devlin as his Player of the Week.
GROUP TWO
St Josephs 1-1 Scoil an Droichid 1-1
St Brides 0-1 St Matthews 0-6
St Josephs 1-1 St Brides 1-2
Scoil an Droichid 1-4 St Matthews 5-1
St Josephs 0-0 St Matthews 0-2
Scoil an Droichid 1-1 St Brides 2-3
Winners - ST MATTHEWS

Player of the Week - Francis Brennan
REPORT
St Matthews had their best week yet with three excellent victories, though they will admit that their toughest game was against the rapidly-improving St Josephs, winning by only two points to no score. Indeed, the Ballyhackamore school had one of the day's outstanding players in goalkeeper Daniel Kelly. He was pipped to the Player of the Week award by Francis Brennan from St Matthews, who was the heart and driving force of the team, ably assisted by Patrick Doherty and Chris Cooley. In their first game, the St Matthews trio all scored two points each in the 0-6 to 0-1 defeat of St Brides. Cooley and Doherty added two goals each in the next game with Scoil an Droichid, while Brennan got the fifth and he got one of the points in the last game with St Josephs. The pick of the other games was the draw between Scoil an Droichid and St Josephs, where Aaron Ross scored a dramatic equalising goal after Niall Brown had goaled for St Josephs. Other stars on the day were Damien Connolly with a super goal for St Josephs against St Brides, and the double act of Ronan O'Kane and Michael Webb. Their scores helped the Malone Road boys to two wins and second place in the group.

NOTE: All players in the Schools League are welcome to attend training sessions with Bredagh youth teams. We have Under-10 training every Sunday morning at Cherryvale at 10.00am and Under-10 League matches on Monday nights, as well as Under-12 training on Tuesday nights at Cherryvale at 7.00pm and matches on Sunday afternoons.
ST JOSEPHS BEST PLAYER on DAY 4, Cherryvale Tuesday May 27th GROUP ONE
Holy Rosary 2-5 St Michaels 1-4
Holy Rosary 3-2 St Josephs 0-0
St Michaels 5-2 St Josephs 0-1
Winners - HOLY ROSARY

Players of the Week - Michael Magee (St Michaels) and ..

.. Daniel Kelly (St Josephs)
NOTE: Scoil an Droichid, St Bernards, St Brides and St Matthews were not involved this week.
REPORT:
Holy Rosary won a scaled down competition but were given a real run for their money by a gutsy St Michaels team. In an extended match, the Sunnyside boys weren't safe until Jamie Cleary palmed the clinching goal to the net. Johnny Li had given St Michaels the lead and he went on to score three points, but Matthew Cross hit back with a goal and a point for Holy Rosary. Two points from Ciaran Fitzpatrick and one from Cleary was matched by scores from Daniel Donnelly and substitute Ruairi Johnston. That all left just one point in it, but when St Michaels wasted chances to equalise, the champions made them pay.

Holy Rosary's Jamie Cleary makes the ball his in the crunch game with St Michaels.
St Josephs then took on the 'big boys' for the first time and put up a good show but they had no match for the likes of Jimmy McCaffery and Ben Horner on the St Michaels side. Even goalkeeper Michael Johnston came out to claim a goal! Still, Gareth O'Reilly scored a consolation point for St Josephs from a well-deserved penalty.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Michael 'Diddles' Magee (pictured here in the red boots) was once again outstanding in defence and took the senior award, despite stiff competition from Charle McGrath and Johnny Li from the same school, and the excellent Pearse Leitch who defended bravely for Holy Rosary, stopping many attacks. St Josephs goalkeeper Daniel Kelly has been making great saves for weeks, and again he was on form to claim the second award.
TEAM OF THE WEEK
This is a new feature that will run for the last few weeks and will end with a 'Team of the Tournament', to be named on Finals Day.

Player of the Week - Donal Hughes

No-one could keep up with St Bernards, especially Niall Wright!
REPORT: Wet, Wet, Wet! Every single player (and teacher) deserves great credit for turning up and playing their part on a terrible afternoon. Better still, the games in both groups were exciting and keenly-contested. In Group One, St Bernards showed that with a full team they can be unstoppable. They won all three games, beating St Matthews and Holy Rosary with some ease and having to stage a comeback to defeat St Michaels. In the other games, St Matthews caused a shock with a deserved win over Holy Rosary, 0-5 to 1-0.
In the opening game, Emmett Costello gave St Michaels an early lead against Holy Rosary, but Matthew Cross hit back with 1-1 to claim the points. Then St Bernards beat St Matthews with goals from Niall Wright (2) and Conor McCloskey. Next up was the shock result - two points each for Patrick Doherty and Francis Brennan, and a tremendous kick from long distance from Robert McAuley all contributing to St Matthews first win over Holy Rosary, for whom Kaelan Devlin scored a fine goal. St Michaels then had favourites St Bernards on the rack, with goals from Daniel Donnelly and Jimmy McCaffrey, but a screamer into the top of the net from Player of the Week Donal Hughes, two goals from Conor McCloskey and a point from Niall Donnelly settled the contest. St Michaels then got the win they deserved with a winning strike from Ruairi Johnston, and finally it was one-way traffic as St Bernards beat Holy Rosary. Donal Hughes (2) and Niall Donnelly tapped over points before Conor McCloskey's 45 sailed straight to the net. Conor added the icing to the cake with a rare left-footed point!

Player of the Week - Bláthnaid Ní Smaolaigh
REPORT: These evenly-match teams enjoyed a close game with Bláthnaid Ní Smaolaigh catching the eye of referee and Down player Shane King. 'She played really well and took no nonsense from the other players', said Shane. The hero in the penalty shoot-out was St Josephs shot-stopper supreme Daniel Kelly.

Bredagh Under-12 footballer and hurler Donal McKegney displayed the courage of a lion twice on Finals Day. First, he was a rock at the heart of the St Michaels defence as they won an epic Semi-final against Holy Rosary (the first time they had beaten their rivals), and second, Donal played the part of the lion in the school play 'The Wizard of Oz'. In between the two events, Donal broke his arm in the football tournament and missed the presentation where he was named on the Team of the Tournament. Still, he performed as a one-armed lion and now proudly wears his new Down shirt, which was a prize for being named on the team. Best wishes from everyone to Donal for a speedy recovery.
