BREDAGH SHOCK CLUB GIANTS ACROSS ULSTER!
It's amazing but true - Bredagh U-10s beat Clonduff, Bundoran, Crossmaglen and Ballyholland to win the prestigious Warrenpoint Tournament on Saturday, August 10th. The likes of St Vincents Dublin, Dungannon Clarkes and Killybegs were also in the 18-team competition, but little Bredagh emerged as Champions!

NOTE: SCROLL DOWN FOR REPORTS ON THE WARRENPOINT, NEWRY AND BANBRIDGE TOURNAMENTS

TEAMS IN THE WARRENPOINT TOURNAMENT
Warrenpoint - Bredagh - Killybegs - Mayobridge - Bundoran - Clonduff - Rostrevor - Bryansford - Newry Shamrocks - Simonstown, Meath - Dungannon - Longstone - St Vincents, Dublin - Bosco - Crossmaglen - Burren - Saval - Ballyholland

HOW THEY DID IT - WARRENPOINT TOURNAMENT 2002
1st Round - BREDAGH 4-3 Clonduff 0-5
The home club of Ross Carr and 1960 All Ireland captain Kevin Mussen were the first to feel the might of Bredagh, despite taking a two-point lead.

A goal and a point midway through the first-half from captain and Player of the Tournament Conor McCloskey (pictured above) turned the tie in our favour. Goalkeeper of the Tournament Marty O'Hara (also pictured above) made the first of many tremendous saves to break Clonduff hearts, and the job was finished by two goals from full-forward Ryan McElkerney.
SCORERS: McCloskey 2-2, McElkerney 2-0, Costello 0-1.

Taking Time Out: Goalscorer Ryan McElkerney with Ben McCaughey.

Q-final - BREDAGH 0-6 Bundoran 0-3
A physically bigger Bundoran side looked like steam-rolling Bredagh in the early exchanges with Marty O'Hara under siege from three successive 45s, but the keeper kept another clean sheet. We still fell behind by a point, and it was 2-2 early in the second-half, but terrible twins in midfield Costello and McCloskey worked their magic to get the vital scores.

Wee Declan Magee (pictured above left, with Lorcan McMullan) did some great work and Kaelan Devlin tormented the Bundoran defence. At the end, the Donegal visitors were heart-broken as they fully expected to go further in the competition.
SCORERS: McCloskey 0-5, Costello 0-1.

S-final - BREDAGH 2-4 Crossmaglen 1-5 AET
Surely the famous All Ireland Senior Club Champions from South Armagh would send Bredagh packing - wrong again! A familiar pattern was emerging - Bredagh playing into the wind in the first-half, falling behind and then surprising the opposition with a determined comeback. Crossmaglen took a 3-0 lead and had a goal-bound effort saved by O'Hara. Conor McCloskey replied with a goal, but we still trailed at the break. 'Believe you can win' was the message from manager Damien McCloskey during the interval. Bredagh conceded their first goal of the Tournament at the start of the second-half, but it was to Crossmaglen's last score in the contest. Another Conor McCloskey goal forced extra-time - 2-2 to 1-5.
Five more minutes: Manager Damian McCloskey talks to Jamie Cleary before extra-time.

In the first period, Conor put a penalty wide and missed a few frees, to leave it level at the break. But the wee man picked himself up and got the winning scores for Bredagh. It was a fully-deserved win that left the Cross lads in tears at the end.
SCORER: McCloskey 2-4.

Before the Final: Captains Conor McCloskey (Bredagh) and Rory Keenan (Ballyholland) with referee Michael Cranny.

Final - BREDAGH 2-6 Ballyholland 2-4

'Now you're in the Final, you might as well win it' was the message to the Belfast boys before the decider, but yet again Bredagh fell behind.

Action from the Final: Bredagh No 3 Jamie Cleary kicks the ball out.
Ballyholland hit the post and then found the net, but a great point from Emmett Costello and a goal from McCloskey that went in off the inside of the post left it level at half-time. We went two points clear, but a soft goal and a point had Ballyholland in front. It looked all over, but McCloskey and Costello sliced through the defence and Emmett blasted a wonder goal to the net! Another free from Conor sealed an historic victory.
SCORERS: McCloskey 1-5, Costello 1-1.

TOTAL SCORING: McCloskey 5-16, Costello 1-3, McElkerney 2-0.

PRESENTATION BY LIAM AUSTIN

Former Down star Liam Austin presented the Cup to Conor McCloskey.

REFLECTIONS ON A FUN-FILLED DAY
On arriving in Warrenpoint town, the boys spotted a Fun Fair. 'If you win the Tournament, we'll take you there on the way home', was the throw-away remark that became a promise held!

A 'bumper' day for the Bredagh boys!

Four Star Men! Cleary, O'Hara, McCloskey & Costello.

No-one really believed that Bredagh could take on the best and win the Cup, but this is a special team with special players, and I'm not just talking about the likes of McCloskey, Costello and O'Hara. In defence, Jamie Cleary at full-back was immense, corner-back Marty Maguire got better and better, and Ben McCaughey gave everything in every match. In the forwards, Michael Doran and Kaelan Devlin worked very hard to make the openings and win frees, while Declan Magee was everywhere. The encouraging part was the role played by 7/8 year-olds such as Lorcan McMullan, Conor McEvoy, Seamus McCloskey, Daniel Steel and Mark Quinn, while Ciaran McFarland and James McWilliams clearly benefitted from the whole experience.

Michael Doran & Ciaran McFarland.

Manager Damian McCloskey knew his players well from all the coaching sessions throughout the year, and his wise words kept the boys focussed on the job in hand. The games were tense, thrilling and tiring, but the Tournament ended in a triumph that will help put Bredagh's name on the football map. Hopefully, it marks the start of a successful run for the club in years to come.

MORE REPORTS are on the Warrenpoint Club website - http://www.warrenpointgaa.com/ AND here - http://www.hoganstand.com/down/

NEWRY MITCHELS TOURNAMENT - August 24th
We beat Bryansford and Bailieboro, but were unlucky to lose out in the Group stage to a big Dungannon team (at least two of them admitted to us to being over-age) and we were denied a place in the semi-finals by a mix-up by the organisers - we were told we were through, but after some confusion, we were told we lost out by just three points.

First Round - Bredagh 4-3 Bryansford 0-3
A comprehensive win over the boys from Newcastle, with 3-3 on the board before they scored. Conor McCloskey scored 3-2 in all, with another goal from Ciaran Fitzgerald and a point from Kaelan Devlin who was playing in midfield in the absence of Emmett Costello.

Group Game - Bredagh 1-4 Bailieboro 0-1
Another excellent performance saw us lead by 1-4 to no score with points from the very impressive Daniel O'Rourke, Kaelan Devlin and 1-2 from Conor McCloskey. Marty O'Hara, Player of the Month for August on his brilliant Tournament performances, kept a second clean sheet. A good win over a team had already beaten the other team in the group - Dungannon.

Group Game - Bredagh 1-4 Dungannon 3-5
A controversial game which ended in disappointment. First, we were told that because of our victory and their defeat already in the group, we could afford to lose by ten points and still reach the Semis. Wrong! We lost by seven and went out. A hard lesson was learned - we relaxed and paid the price. The second controversy came from reports that Dungannon had played overrage players. They were certainly a big team and were too strong for us. They also won the Tournament for the second year in-a-row. Having said that, two of their goals were fortunate, one dropping in over the keeper and the other bouncing off the crossbar to a player on the goal-line. A goal from Conor (he got all of our scores) appeared to have rescued the situation late on, and at the end we still thought we were through, only for the organisers to inform us that we were -1 and Dungannon were +2 - a difference of just three points.

BANBRIDGE TOURNAMENT - September 14th
Another magnificent effort by the boys, but it all ended in heartbreak with a one-point defeat in an epic Semi-final against Burren. We had them on the rack for most of the game (scoring eleven times) but they got killer goals on the break. Still, it was quite an achievement to reach the last four and to come so close to beating and winning the whole competition. This means that in four tournaments in 2002, Bredagh have won one, reached two Semi-finals and narrowly missed a Semi-final in the other. Not bad at all, and the disappointment of Banbridge was a sign of how far the boys have come.

Group Game - Bredagh 3-5 Warrenpoint 1-3
A brilliant block by Ben McCaughey, super goalkeeping by Marty O'Hara, magical corner-back play by Declan Magee, and the courage of Jamie Cleary were the outstanding memories of this fine win. With defenders like that, the forwards got on with the job and scored all of our 3-5 before Warrenpoint got on the scoresheet. A couple of great points by Emmett Costello, another from Daniel Nolan and goals by Conor McCloskey and Timothy Durkan saw us home.

Group Game - Bredagh 1-6 Loughinisland 1-1
This was a tight game against the toughest team in the group, but the boys deserved to win. We trailed to an early goal, but a goal by Conor had us in front by two points at the break. A great score on the restart by Daniel Nolan set us up nicely to dominate, and another point from Daniel O'Rourke sealed the victory. Marty Maguire and Ben Scullion worked hard in defence.

Group Game - Bredagh 11-6 Aghaderg 0-0
Manager Mickey Young used all of his 19-strong squad and gave starts to Jack Holywood, Ciaran McFarland and Ciaran McKavanagh, and James McWilliams.
SCORERS: Kaelan Devlin 1-0, Emmett Costello 1-0, Conor McCloskey 1-1, Daniel O'Rourke 2-0, Ciaran Fitzpatrick 2-0, Daniel Nolan 1-1, Ryan McElkerney 1-1, Timothy Durkan 0-2, Ciaran McKavanagh 1-0, Michael Doran 1-0, Ben McCaughey 0-1.

Semi-final - Bredagh 1-10 Burren 4-2
What a match! This really was the game that everyone left the Tournament talking about, after a superb exhibition. Bredagh did not deserve to lose, and can count themselves very unlucky. We raced into a 1-4 to 0-0 lead with some great football and a goal by Daniel Nolan. But just before the break, Burren scrambled two goals to leave it 1-4 to 2-0 at half-time. Bredagh again made the running with Nolan and McCloskey taking us four points clear. But again we were hit by goals on the break - the first taking a lucky deflection and the second putting us four points down. Conor was desperately unlucky to hit a post, and Burren hauled Bredagh players down time and time again. Conor punished them with three frees, but we couldn't get through for a goal and Burren were extremely relieved to hear the final whistle.

SUMMARY: Once again, the Bredagh boys did everyone proud. They showed themselves to be wonderfully talented footballers, they rewarded their coaches and parents with spirited play and excellent skills, and they impressed all observers from clubs throughout the county. We were desperately close to reaching the final and winning the Tournament, but don't be too disheartened - there is much to celebrate!

Results

NARROW DEFEAT BY ST PETERS
The boys lost by just one point when St Peters Lurgan visited Cherryvale on March 10th. At half-time, Bredagh led by 2-1 to 0-1 with both goals from Conor McCloskey. At full-time, St Peter’s Lurgan were a point to the good, but it was clear that they have been playing together for quite some time. Managers Mickey Young and Damien McCloskey were more than pleased with this first outing. There were terrific performances in defence by Emmett Costello and Rowan Blaney, while Daniel Nolan and Timothy Durkan also caught the eye. A defeat, but very definite progress.

A GAME OF TWO HALVES!
We scored six goals and still lost to visitors O'Hanlons after an amazing second-half turnaround. Conor McCloskey bagged a hat-trick of goals and two points, while Jimmy McCaffery scored one goal. Kaelan Devlin got 1-2, and Daniel Nolan struck the best goal of all in the second-half. Emmett Costello, Ben McCaughey and Donal Hughes played really well in defence, while Ryan McElkerney showed well at corner-forward. Bredagh led at half-time by 3-2 to 1-0, so the second-half was quite a collapse!

FIRST WIN
Eire Og were no match for a fast-improving Bredagh team at Cherryvale. 4-4 to no score tells it's own story.

FIRST AWAY WIN
The mist came down from the mountain at the Hightown venue but it didn't stop the Bredagh lads from putting in a magnificent performance to outplay St Endas. Daniel Nolan, playing in midfield with Conor McCloskey, was elusive as ever, scoring 1-1. Michael Magee at left half back covered every inch of the pitch, and scored a goal from 20 yards through a mass of players. Conor McCloskey tormented the visitors with some dazzling football and scored 1-4 to give Bredagh a half-time lead of 3-5 to 0-1. St Endas came back strongly in the second-half but Jamie Cleary was outstanding as centre back. He swept up everything thrown at him, while Emmett Costello at centre half did really well and even scored two delightful points. Ciaran Fitzpatrick was as solid as ever and his bullet of a left boot got Bredagh out of trouble on numerous occasions. Bredagh finished strongly some delightful passing and movement, and points from Daniel Nolan, Conor McCloskey, Jimmy McCaffery, Kaelan Devlin, and Tim Durkin, as well as a penalty expertly converted by Conor McCloskey.

ROBBED AT SARSFIELDS! The boys enjoyed a really good work-out at Sarsfields and were winning right up to the last few seconds when the home team scored a goal. The performance bodes well for next Saturday’s Newry Mitchels Tournament, which Bredagh are entered into for the first time. In the absence of Conor McCloskey and Daniel Nolan, the U-10s showed they have a super squad with great games from Emmett Costello, Donal McKegney and Marcus Young. Also, Jamie Cleary gets better with every game, Ben Scullion competed well in attack, and Jimmy McCaffery got the Bredagh goal.

BREDAGH DOZEN STUNS CARRYDUFF!
Twelve goals and five points left our Carryduff visitors reeling after a challenge game at Cherryvale on June 2nd. The performance was as good as the scoreline suggests, as the boys played wonderful football throughout. Conor McCloskey got the first two goals, with Kaelan Devlin and Daniel Nolan involved in the build-up. Two well-taken 45s by Emmett Costello set up further goals, the second for the Man of the Match Michael Magee. Damhan Farmer, Ryan McElkerney and Daniel Nolan helped themselves to more goals as Bredagh led at half-time by 7-3 to 0-0. Nolan and substitute full-forward Niall Boyd kept the goals coming after the break, followed by Diddles, Nolan again and Marty Maguire, while Ben Scullion scored a super point. Apart from the scoring, Jamie Cleary and Diddles were amazing in defence, Player of the Month Ciaran Fitzpatrick won every ball, while Niall Irwin, Diarmaid Kielty, James Mulholland and Declan Magee did really well on their U-10 debuts. In fact, all 24 players deserve credit for working so hard in the last few months to become this good. Manager Damian McCloskey was almost lost for words after the game, but not quite - 'Well done lads, that was absolutely outstanding. But we need to work on a few things - there's training on Tuesday night!'.
Next match - Saturday week, June 15th at Corrigan Park against St Johns, and then at home to Sarsfields on the Tuesday night before going to Newry on Saturday 22nd.
BREDAGH TEAM: Marty McCann, Ben McCaughey, Jamie Cleary, Ciaran Fitzpatrick, Diddles, Emmett Costello, Ciaran McFarland, Conor McCloskey, Martin Maguire, Kealan Devlin, Ryan McElkerney, Daniel Nolan, Ben Scullion, Daniel O'Rourke, Damhan Farmer, Michael Doran. Subs: James McWilliams, Niall Boyd, Declan Magee, Diarmaid Kielty, Niall Irwin, James Mulholland.
SCORERS: Daniel Nolan 3-3, Conor McCloskey 3-0, Michael 'Diddles' Magee 2-0, Niall Boyd 1-0, Ryan McElkerney 1-0, Damhan Farmer 1-0, Martin Maguire 1-0, Kaelan Devlin 0-1, Ben Scullion 0-1.

ST JOHNS GIVEN THEIR TOUGHEST GAME
The St Johns manager said this was their hardest game of the year so far. The Bredagh manager Mickey Young said it was a 'tale of missed chances' after his team failed to turn lots of good work into scores. Marty Maguire had his best game yet, with Ben Scullion also excellent and Man of the Match Ciaran Fitzpatrick. At midfield, Tim Durkan and Marcus Young showed that they are very capable players, while Eoin Costello and goalkeeper Ryan McElkerney had fine games as well.

DANIEL O'ROURKE MAKES HIS POINT!
A brilliant score from former goalkeeper Daniel O'Rourke was the highlight of this excellent performance by the improving U-10s. 'Their movement was very good' remarked co-manager Damien McCloskey. Unfortunately, the Newry Tournament is OFF, but more games will follow for the boys.

McPEAKE & DORAN STAR AGAINST ST GALLS
Little Aaron McPeake stole the show in this Challenge game with a display of tigerish aggression and bags of skill. He tormented the St Galls defence and set up chances for team-mates such as Michael Doran who crashed an unstoppable piledriver to the net early in the second-half. Despite starting with only 14 players, Bredagh scored six points, mainly from superb work by Marcus Young and Conor McCloskey. The goals duly followed, while Ben McCaughey and Jamie Cleary let nothing past at the other end. Another brilliant performance by a brilliant team.
TEAM & SCORERS: Martin O'Hara, Rowan Blaney, Jamie Cleary, Ciaran Fitzpatrick 1-0, Ben McCaughey, Timothy Durkan, Conor McCloskey 2-5, Marcus Young 1-2, Ciaran McKavanagh, Michael Doran 1-0, Ryan McElkerney 0-1, James McWilliams 0-1, Seamus McCloskey, Aaron McPeake.
