REPORTS AND TEAM DETAILS

BRAVE FIGHT IN TOUGH OPENER AT BRYANSFORD
Bryansford 5-9 Bredagh 2-5
Bredagh led the mighty Bryansford at their own pitch by two points at half-time despite missing key players in Niall Nolan, Paddy Woods and Cormac White. Captain Cormac Hughes and Martin McNally did strong running at midfield, and Donal Hughes opened with two long-range points before Conor McCloskey found the net for a 4-point lead. Tight defending by the terrible twins Donal McKegney and Emmett Costello kept things tight, and after a good move down the left wing a Ryan Johnston special was deflected to the net and Donal Hughes sent over another point to leave Bredagh ahead at the break. Bryansford got an early break in the second half when the referee awarded a free to Bredagh for a hand-ball but the 'ford took the free and the 'ref played on only for the ball ended up in the net. This knocked the confidence of the visitors and along with injuries to key defenders Matthew McAfee and Michael Magee, Bryansford opened up a big lead. To their credit Bredagh fought back and a Sean Irwin piledriver was pushed onto the crossbar by the keeper and over the bar. A Ryan Johnston penalty cannoned off the post and Bredagh knew their luck was out when the home keeper made further excellent saves.
TEAM: Sean Armstrong, Emmett Costello, Matthew McAfee, Donal McKegney, Michael Magee, Declan O'Hara, Pearse Leitch, Cormac Hughes, Martin McNally, Ryan Johnston, Dermot Colton, Donal Hughes, Michael Coffey, Sean Irwin, Conor McCloskey, Eoin Little, Kevin Duffin, Gabriel Doran, Ben McCaughey.

A BRIGHT START AT HOME
Bredagh 6-8 Bright 1-0
Bredagh had a comfortable win in their first home League game. A fine save by Sean Armstrong kept the visitors out early on and good play by Martin Mc Nally set up Daniel Nolan for the first point and Bredagh took control against the wind. Two goals each for Conor McCloskey and Sean Irwin left Bredagh 14 points ahead at half time. Michael Coffey and Ben McCaughey, with the final point, showed up well. Pearse Leitch displayed great courage in winning a 50-50 tackle and got a nasty punch for his trouble with the Bright player getting an early bath. Donal Mc Kegney was unanimous choice for most valuable player.
TEAM: Sean Armstrong, Emmett Costello, Matthew McAfee, Gabriel Doran, Donal McKegney, Declan O'Hara, Pearse Leitch, Niall Nolan 0-1, Cormac Hughes 1-0, Sean Irwin 3-1, Martin McNally, Donal Hughes 0-1, Conor McCloskey 2-1, Paddy Woods 0-2, Daniel Nolan 0-2, Ben McCaughey 0-1, Michael Coffey, Kevin Duffin, Garret Murray.

BIG WIN OVER DARRAGH CROSS
Darragh Cross 0-0 Bredagh 3-10
Two wins in-a-row for the boys with a one-sided victory at Darragh Cross. Paddy Woods, the U-12s version of Peter Canavan, had a stormer, while Declan O'Hara was named Man of the Match for another superb performance.

WIN NUMBER THREE, OVER DUNDRUM
Bredagh 12-7 Dundrum 1-0
The visitors were first to score but Bredagh took the game by the scruff of the neck and two early goals by goal-machine Sean Irwin settled the home side. Although he didn't score, Niall Nolan covered every blade of grass on the pitch and Cormac Hughes was voted MVP.
TEAM & SCORERS: Sean Armstrong, Cormac White, Matthew McAfee, Gabriel Doran, Donal McKegney, Declan O'Hara, Pearse Leitch, Niall Nolan, Cormac Hughes 3-0, Dermot Colton 1-0, Martin McNally 0-4, Donal Hughes 1-0, Conor McCloskey 2-2, Paddy Woods 2-1, Sean Irwin 2-0, Daniel Nolan 1-0, Garret Murray, Kevin Duffin, Michael Coffey, Paddy Hannity.

NARROW WIN AT DROMARA
Dromara 2-1 Bredagh 2-4
Despite missing several key players the smaller Bredagh team displayed great courage to take home the points. Declan O'Hara must have been marking the biggest U-12 in County Down! Daniel Nolan was up against another giant but, along with MVP Michael Magee and Donal Mc Kegney, showed that courage and determination will always win out. Conor McCloskey scored 1-1 and set up Declan O'Hara for another goal. A further point from Patrick Hannity left Bredagh ahead by 5 points at the interval but Dromara fought back with 4 points on the restart. Two super points at the end from Donal Hughes left Bredagh the winners.
TEAM: Sean Armstrong, Cormac White, Matthew McAfee, Joe Burns, Michael Magee, Donal McKegney, Pearse Leitch, Donal Hughes, Declan O'Hara, Matthew Mullan, Dermot Colton, Sean Irwin, Conor McCloskey, Daniel Nolan, Paddy Hannity, Michael McAllister, Michael Coffey, Gabriel Doran, Kevin Duffin, Ben McCaughey.

CHAMPIONSHIP OPENER
Ballykinlar 0-1 Bredagh 3-14
Five wins in-a-row as Bredagh beat Ballykinlar to set up a clash with Carryduff. Cormac Hughes and MVP Niall Nolan returned to dominate midfield as the rampant city lads won easily after a poor enough first-half.
TEAM AND SCORERS: Sean Armstrong, Cormac White, Matthew McAfee, Garret Murray, Pearse Leitch, Declan O'Hara 0-1, Donal McKegney, Cormac Hughes 0-2, Niall Nolan 0-1, Matthew Mullan 1-0, Donal Hughes 0-4, Dermot Colton 1-1, Michael Coffey, Paddy Woods 0-3, Sean Irwin 1-0, Michael McAllister, Kevin Duffin, Conor McCloskey 0-2, Ryan McAlinden, Eoin Lyttle, Ben McCaughey.

BREDAGH SCARE CARRYDUFF!
Bredagh 2-4 Carryduff 4-6
'Your boys scared the life out of us' - Carryduff manager Paddy Byrne after his team had come back from four points down to beat Bredagh in a nail-biting second-half. Goals from Conor McCloskey and Paddy Woods had Bredagh ahead at half-time by four points, but only Niall Nolan scored for the home side after the break. Niall also had a goal effort go agonisingly wide when it would have left just one point between the sides at an important stage. All in all, it was a very encouraging display by Bredagh considering that the vast majority of the team is still at Primary School. Managers Paul Doran and Damian Canavan have made tremendous progress in a short time, and the U-12s are still flying high in the League. MVP for Bredagh was Conor McCloskey.
TEAM & SCORERS: Sean Armstrong, Donal McKegney, Matthew McAfee, Cormac White, Michael Magee, Declan O'Hara, Pearse Leitch, Niall Nolan 0-1, Cormac Hughes (c), Matthew Mullan, Donal Hughes, Emmett Costello, Sean Irwin 0-2, Paddy Woods 0-1, Conor McCloskey 1-1, Daniel Nolan, Dermot Colton, Michael McAllister, Gabriel Doran, Ben McCaughey, Michael Coffey, Eoin Lyttle.

BACK TO WINNING WAYS
Bredagh 2-10 Saul 0-2
SCORERS: Marty McNally 1-6, Dermot Colton 0-1, Ryan Johnston 0-1, Donal Hughes 1-2.

MAGICAL CONOR HITS FIVE GOALS
Downpatrick 1-1 Bredagh 9-7
Bredagh recorded their sixth successive league victory with a big win in Thomas Russell Park. Marcus Young impressed on his debut with a goal while the half-back line showed their usual determination. Conor McCloskey recorded an unbelievable 5-3 while the midfield pairing of Michael McAllister and MVP Marty Mc Nally got through a lot of hard work.
TEAM AND SCORERS: Sean Armstrong, Donal McKegney, Matthew McAfee, Gabriel Doran, Pearse Leitch, Declan O'Hara (capt), Michael Magee, Michael McAllister, Marty McNally, Matthew Mullan, Dermot Colton 1-1, Paddy Hannity, Conor McCloskey 5-3, Paddy Woods 1-3, Michael Coffey, Sean Irwin 2-0, Marcus Young 1-0, Kevin Duffin, Eoin Lyttle.

MARCUS AT THE DOUBLE!
Bredagh 2-2 Sarsfields 4-2
Bredagh put up a brave fight against a fine Sarsfields team who are one of the top Antrim U-12 sides. Despite conceding height advantage all over the park, Bredagh put it up to the visitors and were ahead by 2 points at half-time, thanks to two excellent goals from MVP Marcus Young. Sarsfields went ahead with goals from their towering full-forward, and although a fine point from debut man Michael Smith had Bredagh fighting back, referee Michael Coffey had to blow up the match early.
TEAM: Sean Armstrong, Donal McKegney, Matthew McAfee, Gabriel Doran, Michael Magee, Declan O'Hara, Pearse Leitch, Niall Nolan, Cormac Hughes, Ryan Johnston, Dermot Colton, Donal Hughes, Michael Coffey, Paddy Woods, Marcus Young, Conal O'Neill, Francis McMahon, Paddy Hannity, Michael Smith.

MARTY STARS AT FULL-BACK IN CH'SHIP WIN
Ardglass 1-1 Bredagh 6-10
Bredagh made it into the last four of the championship with a comfortable win at Ardglass. Despite missing several key players the city boys were much too strong for the small Ardglass team. Niall Nolan and Cormac Hughes dominated the midfield sector and provided good early ball for an eager forward line where Marcus Young, Donal Hughes and Conor McCloskey were outstanding. In the course of two rapid penalties, McCloskey got injured and took an early bath along with some of the lads who had played in the Primary Schools final earlier. The highlights of the second half were the performances of goalie turned full-forward Sean Armstrong and MVP Marty McNally.
TEAM & SCORERS: Sean Armstrong 1-1, Donal McKegney, Marty McNally, Gabriel Doran, Pearse Leitch, Declan O'Hara 0-1, Emmett Costello, Niall Nolan 1-0, Cormac Hughes 2-1 (c), Ryan Johnston 0-1, Marcus Young 1-1, Donal Hughes 0-3, Daniel Nolan, Paddy Woods 0-1, Conor McCloskey 1-1, Michael Coffey, Francis McMahon, Michael Smith.

BEST WIN OF THE SEASON - THRILLER AT ST JOHNS
St John's 5-7 Bredagh 7-3
Bredagh pulled off their best win of the season with a two-point victory at St Johns. We were missing some star names but the team displayed great courage and determination to win the game in an exciting finale. Bredagh opened the scoring through Marcus McMullan and two fine goals from Conor McCloskey, but goalkeeper Sean Armstrong had to make some very good saves to restrict the Johnnies to only a three-point lead at the interval, 4-4 to 4-1. The second-half was no place for the faint-hearted as Bredagh clawed their way back but never managed to catch the home side. Strong performances from Donal McKegney, Michael McAllister and MVP Pearse Leitch had Bredagh still in the game, and some super scores from Paddy Woods and Ryan Johnston left just one point in it with a minute to go. Cometh the hour, cometh the man and captain Declan O Hara crashed the ball to the net to set off wild celebrations among all 18 heroes and supporters- hard luck on St Johns who played fair and hard to the end. So the League will take a break with Bredagh unbeaten since the first game and also looking forward to the semi-final of the championship.
TEAM & SCORERS: Sean Armstrong, Cormac White, Michael McAllister, Gabriel Doran, Pearse Leitch, Donal McKegney, Ryan McAlinden, Conal O Neill, Declan O Hara 2-0, Ryan Johnston 1-0, Marcus McMullan 0-1, Sean Irwin, Conor McCloskey 2-0, Paddy Woods 2-2, Michael Coffey, Paddy Hannity, Kevin Duffin, Eoin Little.

UNLUCKY TO LOSE THRILLER IN THE RAIN
Bredagh 3-3 Castlewellan 2-9
Bredagh were unlucky to lose their first game in Group 1 of the League by just three points in an exciting contest at wet and windy Cherryvale. In a nailbiting finale, Conor McCloskey had two goal efforts saved and there were a few near misses. Bredagh had started the game well with a point from captain Cormac Hughes but the visitors took control and a great save by Michael McAllister kept the home side in touch. Sean Irwin scored a goal but Bredagh needed a big second-half after trailing by four points at the break. The boys rose to the challenge magnificently and Marty McNally scored 1-1. However, Castlewellan got a goal on the break and tagged on a few points. Bredagh responded with a super goal from Cormac Hughes, but the away goalkeeper and some bad luck prevented the draw or victory this performance deserved. Declan O Hara was a unanimous MVP and all 18 players should be congratulated.
TEAM: M.McAllister, M.Coffey, M.McAfee, P.Hannity, D.McKegney, D.O'Hara, P.Leitch, C.Hughes, M.McNally, D.Hughes, M.Young, Ryan.Johnston, C.McCloskey, S.Irwin, S.McCloskey, Rory Johnston, N.Irwin, R.McKegney.

SENSATIONAL U-12s SHOCK DOWN FOOTBALL!!
Bryansford 2-3 Bredagh 8-5

Former Down All Ireland star Eamonn Burns looked on in shock as his Bryansford club's U-12s went down by twenty points on home soil to the mighty Bredagh boys on Wednesday night. It as an historic victory by the Belfast side - beating one of the county's top clubs by such a convincing margin. The achievement was all the sweeter because Bredagh lost at Bryansford on the opening day of the season by 13 points. Five months on, Bredagh showed how much progress has been made. Credit then to managers Paul Doran and Damien Canavan, to the big group of players and to their parents for supporting the team. Eamonn Burns and another former Down star Damien Watson compared Bredagh's first-half performance to Down's first-half in the 1991 All Ireland Final defeat of Meath. The U-12s were simply fantastic - determined, hungry and focussed all over the pitch, from corner-back Dermot Colton to corner-forward Sean Irwin. "It's hard to pick out individuals, but Pearse Leitch, Decky O'Hara and Donal McKegney were a solid platform at half-back, Captain Cormac Hughes and MVP Niall Nolan covered every blade of grass from midfield, and the six forwards were awesome", enthused co-manager Paul Doran. In the second-half, Bredagh made five substitutions, showing the strength of the squad.
TEAM & SCORERS: Sean Armstrong, Dermot Colton, Matthew McAfee, Emmett Costello, Pearse Leitch, Declan O'Hara, Donal McKegney, Niall Nolan 2-0, Cormac Hughes, Donal.Hughes 2-1, Marty McNally 1-2, Ryan Johnston 1-0, Conor McCloskey 1-1, Paddy Woods, Sean Irwin 1-1. Subs: Marcus Young, Daniel Nolan, Rory Johnston, Aidan Connor, Damien Moreland, Packy King.

EASY ROUTE TO THE 'B' FINAL
Bredagh 10-8 Bright 0-0
Bredagh reached the final of the East Down B Championship with a comprehensive victory over Bright at Teconnaught. The Belfast boys were always in control and had excellent performers in Pearse Leitch, Aidan Connor, Donal McKegney, Niall and Daniel Nolan and MVP Cormac Hughes. The forwards all got on the score-sheet and Declan O'Hara was determined to join them - he eventually got his reward with the last goal of the game and told the ref he could blow-up now! The final is likely to be a double header with the U-16 final on Saturday 17th August against the winners of St Johns versus Kilclief.
TEAM & SCORERS: Ryan Johnston, Dermot Colton, Matthew McAfee, Emmett Costello, Pearse Leitch, Declan O'Hara 1-0, Donal McKegney, Niall Nolan 0-2, Cormac Hughes 1-0, Donal Hughes 1-1, Marty McNally 0-1, Marcus Young 1-2, Sean Irwin 2-0, Paddy Woods 1-1, Conor McCloskey 1-0, Daniel Nolan 2-1, Michael Coffey, Gabriel Doran, Aidan Connor, Rory Johnston, Packy King.

UNDERSTRENGTH TEAM LOSE TO CARRYDUFF
Bredagh 0-6 Carryduff 7-7
Bredagh were missing Niall Nolan, Marty McNally, Sean Armstrong, Dermot Colton, Marcus Young, Cormac White, Michael Magee and Daniel Nolan and with a pre-match injury to Conor McCloskey, it was obvious that the team faced an uphill battle on Wednesday night at Cherryvale. Still, Bredagh started well and were denied by the tall Carryduff goalkeeper, the post and bar in the first half. In the second half Bredagh had to play second fiddle to a good team who are in the A championship final. The lads never stopped trying, especially defenders Pearse Leitch, Donal McKegney and MVP Emmett Costello.
TEAM & SCORERS: Ryan Johnston, Aidan Connor, Matthew McAfee, Emmett Costello, Pearse Leitch, Deeko Moreland, Donal McKegney, Declan O'Hara, Cormac Hughes, Donal Hughes, Rory Johnston 0-3, Sean Irwin, Paddy Hannity, Paddy Woods 0-3, Packy King, Conor McCloskey, Michael Coffey, Gabriel Doran.

BEATEN BY A BRILLIANT TEAM - DOWNPATRICK
Downpatrick 10-10 Bredagh 0-4
Bredagh suffered their second consecutive heavy defeat in the East Down A league at Downpatrick. Having to field without several top players, the lads came up against the best team they have had to play this year and were well beaten.
TEAM & SCORERS: Sean Armstrong, Aidan Connor, Damien Moreland, Gabriel Doran, Pearse Leitch, Declan O'Hara 0-1, Michael Magee, Cormac Hughes 0-1, Conal O'Neill, Donal Hughes, Conor McCloskey, Ryan Johnston, Paddy Hannity, Paddy Woods 0-2, Michael Coffey, Seamus McCloskey.

CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL DEFEAT FOR BRAVE BREDAGH
Bredagh 0-9 St Johns 2-8, by Paul Doran.
The Belfast lads gave it their best shot and earned a standing ovation from the large crowd at St Patricks Park in Newcastle. The strong wind made conditions difficult and the Bredagh lads knew that they needed a good lead with the advantage in the first half. Playing good football they opened up a 7-point lead thanks to points from Paddy Woods and Conor McCloskey. The defence was outstanding with Matthew McAfee leading the full-back line and Decky O Hara in command at half-back. Disaster struck just before half-time when a mis-hit shot went past the previously unbeatable Sean Armstrong, but Ryan Johnston converted a good free to leave the half-time score Bredagh 0-8 St Johns 1-0. The Maroons knew they were up against it in the second half and for 20 minutes held the lead thanks to great work from Cormac Hughes and Pearse Leitch in particular. The older and bigger St Johns team eventually pulled ahead but there was no way Bredagh were going to give up. Ryan Johnston must have beaten everyone on the pitch in a 90-yard run which almost ended in glory, and Paddy Woods converted a free, but several others went agonisingly wide and Bredagh lost what veteran Down Recorder journalist Matt Fitzpatrick described as a ‘superb game considering the conditions’. The lads were sporting in defeat and were praised from several quarters in dressing-room speeches, and are already looking forward to next year.

TEAM & SCORERS: Sean Armstrong, Dermot Colton, Matthew McAfee, Gabriel Doran, Pearse Leitch, Declan O’Hara, Michael Magee, Conal O’Neill. Cormac Hughes, Donal Hughes 0-1, Damien Moreland, Ryan Johnston 0-1, Conor McCloskey 0-3, Paddy Woods 0-4, Matthew Mullan, Emmett Costello, Packy King, Paddy Hannity, Ben McCaughey, Seamus McCloskey.

SUMMARY by Youth Coordinator Jerome Quinn.
On the day, Bredagh were without many fine players who might well have made a difference to the result - Marcus Young, the Nolan boys, Donal McKegney, Sean Irwin, Cormac White, Marty McNally, Michael Coffey and Rory Johnston. But this is not a time for excuses. It was a tribute to the boys who were there that they performed with great skill and spirit. As I watched from the Stand, I heard many observers compliment the tremendous football played by the smaller Bredagh team. There is no reason to be disheartened - the club is going in the right direction and this is a stepping stone. The club and the U-12 managers are determined to keep the momentum going. The Final was our 19th game of the season, much more than in previous seasons, not to mention the countless training sessions in the wet and cold since the start of February. Sunday’s game was then the 20th game, and the last in the League, but the club has entered a team into the Castlewellan 9-a-side Tournament on August 31 and training continues on Wednesday nights at 7.00.

PADDY HANNITY BAGS A HAT-TRICK
Bredagh 4-2 Kilcoo 7-7
After a defeat in a championship final probably the last thing Bredagh wanted was a match against the best U-12 team in Down. Kilcoo had stuffed Carryduff the previous day in the A final. It certainly appeared that way when the visitors ran amok in the first half playing football that would not have been out of place at senior level. However , when Bredagh realised they were still a good team, they produced a wonderful second half performance to finish the A league on a relative high. It was encouraging to see the lads pick themselves up and for the last 15 minutes it was all Bredagh with the hero of the hour being Paddy Hannity with three super goals.
TEAM & SCORERS: Sean Armstrong, Aidan Connor, Matthew McAfee, Gabriel Doran, Michael Magee, Decky O Hara, Pearse Leitch, Rory Johnston, Conor Magee, Ben McCaughey, Damien Moreland, Jamie Cleary, Conor McCloskey 1-1, Paddy Woods, Paddy Hannity 3-0, Cormac Hughes, Donal Hughes 0-1, Tony Robin, Packy King, Ryan Johnston, Seamus McCloskey, Aaron.

WIN AT CARRYDUFF FINISHES EXCELLENT SEASON
Carryduff 4-2 Bredagh 7-3
Bredagh finished off an excellent season at with a comprehensive win over Carryduff B in a friendly. The home side are in the B league final next week so this game showed that Bredagh deserved their place in the top grade of the four East Down divisions. Despite the wind and rain this was a good game on a huge pitch with the first-half very close. However, Bredagh really opened up in the third quarter with the reliable half-back platform allowing the midfield and forwards to rattle up the scores. The 'Duff came back towards the end but Bredagh held firm and can look back with pride on their achievements this year. Pearse Leitch showed why he was Player of the Month for August, Daniel Nolan got soaked for the second time in two hours and Ronan McKegney demonstrated that Donal has a rival for pole position in McKegneys!
TEAM & SCORERS: Michael Magee 1-0, Michael Coffey, Matthew McAfee, Gabriel Doran, Donal McKegney, Declan O'Hara, Pearse Leitch, Cormac Hughes 1-0, Niall Nolan 1-0, Ryan McAlinden, Jamie Cleary 1-1, Donal Hughes 0-1, Daniel Nolan, Paddy Woods 2-1, Ronan McKegney, James Rowson (guest-1-0), Peter (guest no.2).
