REPORT ON PREVIOUS MEETING
Bredagh U-12s/14s lost the first meeting with the Co Down Primary School Select by 4-6 to 3-20....
The best young players in Down put on an exhibition at Cherryvale on Thursday September 12th in a unique challenge game. Shane King's young charges played some exceptional football against a bigger Bredagh team, scoring 20 points over the hour. Going by the talented kids from the likes of Kilcoo and Mayobridge, the Sam might return sooner than many people think! Bredagh more than held their own in the first-half with two goals from Matthew Holywood and another by Sean Irwin. John McKenna got a fourth later on.

Results

GOOD WIN IN FIRST CHALLENGE GAME
St Brides 0-1 Bredagh 4-6
The boys had a great start to the season in beating St Brides. Corner-forward sensation Oisin Quinn scored 1-3, Niall Devlin and John McKenna both got 2-1, new captain Stephen Gray was inspirational, and other stars were Aidan O’Neill and Neil Poland in defence. Great performance.

BIG DEFEAT IN FIRST LEAGUE GAME
Bredagh 0-2 Kilcoo 4-11
Bredagh U-14s were the first team from the club to begin serious action in East Down but the boys ran up against a really impressive Kilcoo side and were well-beaten. Manager Frank McKenna had been thorough in his preparations and the boys had been training since early February, but Kilcoo already look to be the team to beat in the Section. Goalkeeper Matthew Holywood made one superb one-handed diving save in the first-half, but Kilcoo still managed four goals. No more goals followed after the break and Bredagh scored two points by Joe Steele and John McKenna, both set-up by Paddy Donnelly. Sub Cormac Hughes came closest to a goal with a great turn and shot, but the keeper kept it out. Niall Devlin and Joe Steele set up the chance. 'Pup', Dermot Coffey, captain Stephen Gray and Oisin Quinn were among the Bredagh boys who gave everything.

BATTLING DRAW AT TECONNAUGHT
Teconnaught 1-8 Bredagh 2-5
Dermot Coffey, Stevie Gray and Aidan O'Neill were the Men of the match as Bredagh picked up a point at Teconnaught. They scored a scrappy goal to lead by a point at the break, and then added 1-3, but this is not a team that gives up. Bredagh staged a magnificent comeback and scored 1-5 to lead the contest by a point. Under immense pressure the defence held firm for a well-deserved draw.
SCORERS: John McKenna 0-3, Paul Doole 1-0, Niall Devlin 0-2, Eoin Costello 0-1, Jason McMurray 0-1, Joe Steele 0-1.

Stephen Gray, midfielder and captain

CHALLENGE WIN OVER ST GALLS
Bredagh 1-5 St Galls B 1-2
The boys got a morale-booster with a challenge game victory over St Galls even though they failed to score in the first-half. Niall Devlin opened up with a point, followed by a great finish to the net by Paul Boyd and further points by Paul Doole, John McKenna (2), and Joe Steele. It was a massive improvement from the Kilcoo game with the defence tightened up very well - Dermot Coffey, Matthew Quinn, Niall Boyle and Aidan O'Neill all excellent.

LEAGUE GAME AT LIATROIM
Liatroim 4-11 Bredagh 2-7
Bredagh led this difficult away match at half-time, 0-7 0-6, but caved in after the interval. Their goals came from full-forward Paul Boyd, who is improving with every game, and a free (deliberate?!) from John McKenna. 20 players turned up and their enthusiasm remains undiminished.

ANOTHER CHALLENGE GAME VICTORY
Bredagh 4-6 St Brides 0-1
A superb performance by full-forward Paul Boyd was the highlight of this morale-boosting 4-6 to 0-1 win over St Brides. Paul scored several long-range points and hammered a great goal to the net after bursting through the visitors defence. The two Matthews also scored their first goals of the new Millennium! Matthew Holywood and Matthew Quinn had not found the net since the last century! Joe Steele got the fourth goal, Stephen Gray added a terrific long-range point, Niall Colton got another and there were excellent displays by Laurence Magennis, Aidan O'Neill and James Johnston in defence.

FIGHTING DISPLAY AGAINST ARDGLASS
Bredagh 0-10 Ardglass 3-8
The Bredagh boys went down fighting after a breathtaking display against the highly-rated Ardglass team. The visitors had several 'giants' on their team and trounced Carryduff a week before. However, Bredagh rattled Ardglass with the first three scores and took the game to them with great tenacity and skill, to the extent that the bigger Ardglass players showed poor discipline on many occasions. Bredagh kept their cool and hunted in packs, frustrating Ardglass with superb tackling and fine passing. Oisin Quinn scored the first point after a five-man hand-passing move, and he got the second. An Eoin Costello free made in 3-0, before Ardglass took over, scoring 2-3 in five minutes. But, Bredagh struck five points in-a-row to leave a point in it at the break, 2-3 to 0-8. The five scorers were Oisin Quinn (2), Eoin Costello, John McKenna and Niall Devlin. A point-blank Matthew Hollywood save kept Bredagh in the contest early in the second-half, and Joe Steel followed up with a point. But, the game swung on a very dubious free award, which Ardglass kicked to the top corner of the net. Still, Bredagh fought to the end with another point from John McKenna, and some courageous and spirited play from Niall Boyle, Aidan O'Neill, Pup, Stephen Gray and Niall Devlin. Full-back Dermot Coffey read the game beautifully throughout, while Niall Colton and Oisin Quinn showed the older lads how it should be done.

JOE'S HAT-TRICK NOT ENOUGH AGAINST RIVALS
Bredagh 3-6 Carryduff 4-10
Three goals by Joe Steele wasn't enough to prevent a defeat at home to Carryduff. Joe got two early goals to put Bredagh ahead by seven points at 2-4 to 0-3. But the wheels came off after that and although Bredagh led by a point at the break, they only got two points in the second-half, both from Stephen Gray, and a goal with the last kick from Joe. Paul Boyd got two points, with the others from Niall Devlin and John McKenna. The highlight was Joe's second goal, a solo effort and a perfect lob into the far corner of the net. 26 players turned out and all round it was a great effort against a physically bigger team.
TEAM: Matthew Holywood, Mark McElroy, Dermot Coffey, Ryan Irvine, Niall Boyle, Kevin McElroy, Aidan O'Neill, Conal Short, Stephen Gray, John McKenna, Niall Devlin, Eoin Costello, Joe Steele, Paul Boyd, Oisin Quinn. Subs used: Niall Colton, Pup, Chris Kelly, Dooler. Subs not used: Mark Galwey, Matthew Quinn, Jason McMurray, Johnathan Johnston, James McAllister, Neil Poland, Lawrence Magennis.

LEAGUE LOSS AT LOUGHINISLAND
Loughinisland 2-12 Bredagh 2-2
Two goals for Paul Boyd in the first-half and another great turn-out for this away game, but yet again the opposition in Section A was just too strong.

MATTHEW ON TARGET IN DRAW AT SARSFIELDS
Sarsfields 1-2 Bredagh 1-2
A Matthew Quinn goal in the first-half had Bredagh in front for most of this low-scoring encounter, but in the end it took some determined defending to earn a very creditable draw. Matthew Holywood made important saves as Sarsfields went for the win, Chris Kelly and Pup remained defiant in defence, while the McElroy twins and Stephen Gray worked very hard. It wasn't a day for pretty football but the forwards did their best, with Joe Steele, Paul Doole and John McKenna all showing up well.

CHAMPIONSHIP - BREDAGH RATTLE KILCOO!
Bredagh 5-9 Kilcoo 8-9
‘That was a tremendous improvement. You have come on dramatically since the last time we played you’ – the Kilcoo manager praising Bredagh for a fantastic performance. We last met in the first game of the season, when Kilcoo hammered Bredagh by 4-15 to 0-2. This time was different. The Bredagh boys rattled the best U-14 team in Down with seven first-half points and a great goal-rush near the end. Not many teams, if any, will score five goals against Kilcoo. Now, Bredagh will attempt to do a ‘Tyrone’ and go through the Back Door! All First Round losers go into the B Championship. Every player was a hero, from goalkeeper Matthew Hollywood to corner-forward John McKenna. Matthew let in eight and saved another eight! John scored a brilliant goal near the end and set another up for Paul Boyd, who got 2-2 in total. Aidan O’Neill was magnificent in defence, while Dermot Coffey, Niall Boyle, Kevin McElroy, Ryan Irvine and David Wilson all battled really well. Big Stephen Gray and Shorty held their own against two big men, while in the forwards, Eoin Costello and Niall Colton were superb. Joe Steele gave Bredagh the lead with a point, followed by a goal from Colton. Kilcoo opened up a four-point lead but Niall Devlin and Paul Boyd fired over two points each and Joe got his third – 2-7 to 1-7 at the break. Kilcoo scored four goals without reply in the second-half, but battling Bredagh refused to lie down. They fought for every ball and deserved three late goals from McKenna, Boyd and David Wilson straight from a free. Niall Devlin added a point. ‘You all should be very proud of yourselves’, said co-manager Cillian Short at the end.

MORE CHAMPIONSHIP HEARTBREAK
Loughinisland 4-9 Bredagh 4-7
Yet again, the Bredagh boys showed a massive improvement and tremendous heart, but were so unlucky to lose to a couple of fluky goals in the second-half at Loughinisland. Bredagh had the better of the play on a terrible pitch, and bettered their League total of 2-2 against the same team. In fact, Bredagh have now scored 5-7 and 4-7 in successive Championship matches, but still haven't won. Aidan O'Neill was immense when moved to midfield alongside the hard-working Kevin McElroy, Oisin Quinn and Dermot Coffey let nothing get past them, Niall Boyle and Ryan Irvine didn't waste a ball, and John McKenna was the pick of the forwards. We fell behind to a couple of soft goals, but Niall Colton ran through to score soccer-style and Paul Boyd got a trademark full-forward goal to put us ahead. We led at the break by a point, but Loughinisland scored four points in-a-row. Bredagh fought back with points from Colton, Niall Devlin and Paddy Donnelly, but every time we got close, they struck back with a hammer blow. First, a high ball landed just over the line after coming down off the underside of the bar, and then a speculative kick dropped into the far corner of the net. Still Bredagh kept going and a brilliant goal from Kevin McElroy gave us more hope, but the winning score just would not come. The boys deserve better luck - it will surely come.

DRUMANESS ARE MADE TO PAY - FIRST LEAGUE WIN!
Bredagh 5-15 Drumaness 1-2
At last the U-14s won a League game and boy did they do it in style! John McKenna scored 2-3 as his dad Frank managed the team to an overdue victory. After five League defeats and two Championship heartbreaks, the boys cut loose and destroyed Drumaness. In their last three games, the U-14s have scored 5-9, 4-7 and 5-15. All of the forwards scored and half-backs Stephen Gray and Aidan O'Neill chipped in with a point each. Paul Boyd got his customary goal and Niall Devlin added another.

ST PAULS GIRLS TEACH BREDAGH BOYS A LESSON
Bredagh 1-6 St Pauls 3-7
A team with several girls came to Bredagh and showed our boys how to play football! They had excellent skills and always tried to find a team-mate when on the ball, unlike most of our team. Still, only for a few soft goals in the first-half when Matthew Holywood was outfield, the scoreline would have been even. Manager Frank McKenna ensured all the squad members got a game, with the likes of Matthew Quinn and Mark Galwey playing the full match. Matthew actually scored our first point, a fine solo effort, and Jason McMurray crashed home a cracking goal after a move involving Oisin Quinn, Mark Galwey and Matthew Quinn. In the second-half, frees from John McKenna and Eoin Costello, and two points from Niall Devlin, reflected our improvement.

GLAD TO SEE THE BACK OF KILCOO
Kilcoo 4-7 Bredagh 0-6
A reasonable second-half by an understrength Bredagh team in their third defeat by Kilcoo this season. Then again, Kilcoo have won every game they have played so far, and we missed a late penalty (which was well won by Shorty). Bredagh scored 0-4 in the first-half - Kilcoo only had one goal in that period. There were good performances from Oisin Quinn and James McAllister, while there was good effort from Niall Devlin, Paddy Donnelly, Shorty and Aidan O'Neill, especially in the second-half.

POOR DISPLAY AT ARDGLASS
Ardglass 2-9 Bredagh 2-6
Eoin Costello scored a brilliant goal, Marty McNally moved up from U-12s to score another goal, and players like Aidan O'Neill, Dermot Coffey and Niall Boyle worked hard, but otherwise this was a dismal performance. It's back to the drawing board and back to basics for a number of players, as this was a game Bredagh should have won. Manager Frank McKenna asked players after the game to consider their display, though part of the problem was also with players who did not turn up.

MATTHEW & AIDO RATTLE THE ST PAULS NET
St Pauls 3-6 Bredagh 3-6
Matthew Quinn stunned St Pauls in this friendly at Boucher Road with a screamer to the top corner of the net. Eoin Costello got a second and then Aidan O'Neill ran 30 yards to score his first goal of the season. This was a much-improved performance on the Ardglass game, with new boy Gerard Connolly getting a point.

PADDY HITS FORM AGAINST LAITROIM
Bredagh 2-7 Liatroim 2-17
Manager Frank McKenna was pleased with his team for playing ‘some great football against a very good Liatroim side’, despite losing by ten points. A masterstroke by the boss sent Paddy Donnelly to full-forward with immediate results - he scored 2-5!! Paul Boyd did well at centre-half-forward and also in a new position, Niall Devlin was excellent at centre-half-back. Eoin Costello, Jonathon Johnston and Joe Steels in goals all played well. The rest never gave up and every one of them tried very hard to the final whistle.

BREDAGH BATTLERS SCARE CARRYDUFF
Carryduff 5-8 Bredagh 1-6
A brilliant early goal by Paddy Donnelly and points from Niall Devlin and David Wilson had Carryduff stunned on their own pitch. Bredagh led by 1-2 to no score after twenty minutes, thanks to the scores and some great play by Niall Boyle and Aidan O'Neill. Manager Frank McKenna had also pulled a masterstroke by employing Chris Kelly as a third midfielder. Then, out of nothing, Carryduff got two scrappy goals. Goalkeeper Matthew Holywood made a super point-blank save and excellent points from Irvine and Wilson left only a point between the teams at the break - 2-2 to 1-4. It was a superb half by Bredagh, but when captain Stephen Gray came off with an injury, the team struggled to contain Carryduff. Still, Devlin and Wilson scored points, and substitute Matthew Quinn had a goal-bound effort blocked by a defender on the line.

LAST HOME LEAGUE GAME ENDS IN DEFEAT
Bredagh 0-4 Loughinisland 2-2 A low-scoring game where Bredagh led by 0-2 to 0-1 at half-time. The defences were on top (Chris Kelly had his best game for quite a while), but the shooting was also poor with many wrong options taken and balls kicked into the keeper's hands. David Wilson and Stephen Gray got our points in the first-half, while Oisin Quinn and John McKenna got the points in the second-half. We conceded two soft goals - one from a quickly-taken free and the other in a goalmouth scramble after a great save by Matthew Holywood.

LAST LEAGUE GAME ENDS IN VICTORY
Drumaness 3-3 Bredagh 3-9 We started with our strongest line-up and were 2-7 to 1-0 up at half-time. Five substitutes came on and finished the job to end the season on a high. Scorers: Eoin "Francis" Costello 1-2, John McKenna 1-1, Paul Boyd 1-0, Niall Colton 0-3, Oisin Quinn 0-1, Stevie Gray 0-2.
