Championship Reports
Liatroim 6-4 Bredagh 5-13, Wednesday July 23rd, Liatroim
According to Liatroim manager Bernard McCrickard, Bredagh are one of four teams that can win this Championship. He was speaking in our dressing-room after an impressive six-point win, although it should be added quickly that Bernard was obviously judging our performance on the first 50 minutes and not the last ten when we amazingly conceded five goals in five minutes! We were cruising at 5-11 to 1-4, a full nineteen points ahead when Eamonn Glenholmes came out of goals. Suddenly, the goals flowed and there was some concern among the large travelling support from Belfast. Thankfully, the boys had played well enough earlier in the game to see them home. In the first-half, some sparkling football had Bredagh in charge with great work by the likes of Niall Colton, Oisin Quinn, Eoin Costello, Matthew Holywood and the McElroys rewarded with scores from Conor McCloskey (1-1 from frees), Deo Colton (0-2 from play) and Peter Graham (1-0). Simon McCluney added a smashing goal near the end of the half, fetching and shooting to the top of the net in one movement, and Rowan Smart kicked a fine long-range point. Half-time: Liatroim 1-3 Bredagh 3-8.
Eoin Costello added a stunning goal on the restart (off his right boot...) and points from Peter Graham, Niall Colton and another McCloskey free cancelled out a Liatroim goal. Then Rowan Smart scored a great goal and it looked all over, but that's when the wheels came off! At least Kevin McElroy kicked a point in the middle of the goal rush, and Eoin Costello finished off the scoring with another point.
Overall, this was a fine win with some very fine football played by the Bredagh lads, who overcame the loss of regular goalkeeper Sean Armstrong in the warm-up. Eamonn Glenholmes played very well between the sticks, while Cormac White and Declan O'Hara deserve special mentions for their displays in the defence. Niall Colton capped his fine performance with a great point, his brother Deo took some lovely scores, as did Peter Graham and Rowan Smart.
The next game will be a much tougher test against Castlewellan next Wednesday in the Quarter-finals of the Championship.
SCORERS: Conor McCloskey 1-2, Eoin Costello 1-2, Rowan Smart 1-1, Peter Graham 1-1, Simon McCluney 1-0, Dermot Colton 0-2, Matthew Holywood 0-2, Kevin McElroy 0-2, Niall Colton 0-1.
Q-final - Bredagh 0-10 Castlewellan 7-9, Wednesday July 30th, Cherryvale
This was a familiar story for the boys with some good football played and some good scores taken, but the opposition proved to be just too big and strong. Bredagh led by 0-4 to 0-3 after fifteen minutes and had Castlewellan chasing shadows, with Cormac Hughes especially effective (scoring 0-2), but four quick goals killed the contest in just four minutes. The plucky home side fought to the very end of the game, with Oisin Quinn in particular refusing to lie down, but Bredagh lacked height, strength and experience in key positions up the middle. The absence of players such as Matthew Hollywood and John McKenna was felt, although it should be stressed that this is mainly a young team which has improved greatly on last year's Under-14 season. There is lots of ability and potential, with players such as Deccie O'Hara, Cormac White, Brian Wright, Niall Nolan, Cormac Hughes, Eoin Costello, Niall Irwin, Peter Graham, Deo Colton and Conor McCloskey. Coaches Frank McKenna and Eugene Irwin have made steady progress in developing the players individually and as a team, so hopefully this will pay off in the future.
SCORERS: Conor McCloskey 0-4, Cormac Hughes 0-2, Niall Nolan, Mark McElroy, Niall Colton, Eoin Costello and Oisin Quinn 0-1 each.
League Reports
St Paul's 3-4 Bredagh 15-22, Hollywood 9th April 7pm As the scoreline suggests, this was a superb display by the Bredagh forwards, registering no fewer than 37 times. Top scorers were 'Deo' Colton with 3-1 (he only played for 35 mins), Cormac Hughes with 2-5, and...

Niall Nolan (pictured above) with 2-3.
There were strong performances from Matthew McAfee, Michael McAllister and Cormac White at the back, but it was the forward's night and Niall Nolan, Paddy Donnelly, Sean Irwin and John McKenna constantly mesmerised the St Paul's defenders with some stunning moves. All the forwards scored and all the subs got a good run-out. Man of the Match - Eoin Costello.
TEAM & SCORERS: Sean Armstrong, Cormac Whyte, Mark McElroy, Matthew McAfee, Matthew Hollywood 0-1, Niall Colton 0-2, Michael McAllister, Owen Costello 2-2, Kevin McElroy, John McKenna 1-5, Paddy Donelly 2-2, Niall Nolan 2-3, Cormac Hughes 3-1, Deo Colton 3-1, Sean Irwin 2-2. Subs Rowan Smart 1-2, Aaron Moreland 0-1, Michael Mullan.

All the hard work in training paid off against St Pauls. Kevin McElroy eyes up his next move as John McKenna closes in, and in the picture below, John is on the receiving end as Cormac White tackles.
NOTE: The Under-14s had two warm-up games for the new season, beating St Brides at their place by 3-5 to 1-5 on February 23 and then losing narrowly at Carryduff on March 23 by 2-5 to 0-7.
Bredagh 5-6 Darragh Cross 4-5, Cherryvale 16th April 7pm Playing against a rather 'elderly' looking Darragh Cross team, a depleted Bredagh outfit played some scintillating football to win this match played at Cherryvale. Although they went behind early on, Bredagh rallied and scored a superb goal crafted by the ever-impressive midfielder Paddy Donnelly and Roan Smart for Sean Irwin to finish well. Darragh Cross went ahead soon after but Bredagh upped their game and goals from John McKenna and Roan Smart put them into a lead they were never to lose. The second-half saw a tighter back division from Bredagh marshalled by the superb Mark McElroy, Matthew Hollywood and Declan O'Hara. John McKenna and Sean Irwin scored further goals and Cormac Hughes looked too classy for Darragh Cross as he clipped over a couple of points. Debutant Simon McCluney led the line well and improved as the game went on. There was a grandstand finish as Darragh Cross scored a couple of late scores, but Bredagh's class was never in doubt - nor was the result.

Sean Irwin scored two goals against Darragh Cross.
TEAM & SCORERS: Sean Armstrong, Cormac White, Mark McElroy, Matthew McAfee, Michael McAllister (sub: Ryan McAlinden), Matthew Hollywood, Declan O'Hara, Paddy Donnelly 0-1, Kevin McElroy, Cormac Hughes 0-3, John McKenna 2-2, Oisin Quinn, Roan Smart 1-0, Simon McCluney, Sean Irwin 2-0. Subs: Matthew Mullan, Aaron Moreland, Michael Coffey.

U-14 defender Cormac White.
Bredagh 2-8 Kilcoo 5-10, Cherryvale 31st April This time last year, our U-14s were well and truly hammered by Kilcoo at Cherryvale. Since then, they went on to become both the U-12 and U-14 champions, and came back to Belfast expecting another easy victory over a Bredagh team missing a couple of players through injury, but instead Kilcoo were given a terrific battle. They came away relieved to have secured the two points and in no doubt that Bredagh is an improving club. Only their experience told in a game in which Bredagh played some magical and gutsy football. Bredagh made a bad start, with some costly errors at the back saw two early goals conceded. Sean Armstrong made a brilliant penalty save, but the home side still had a mountain to climb. Bredagh then managed to miss four kickable frees before finally clicking into gear. John McKenna was the man to spark Bredagh into action, scoring all 1-3 of Bredagh's first half scores - the goal a brilliant solo effort. Kevin McElroy and Eoin Costello started to impose themselves around the middle and Bredagh finished the half the stronger team. The second half saw some early Kilcoo scores but Bredagh again responded well. Matthew Hollywood got on top of the full forward and Niall Nolan, Niall Colton and Oisin Quinn buzzed around the centre of the field. Then an excellent move saw Roan Smart and Aaron Moreland combine to force a penalty. John McKenna cooly converted and Cormac Hughes clipped over an excellent point. There were only three scores in it with five minutes to go. Bredagh just couldn't find the killer punch though and Kilcoo ran out worthy winners. Man of the match was John McKenna with 2-6.
TEAM & SCORERS: Sean Armstrong, Cormac White, Matthew Hollywood, Matthew McAfee (Declan O'Hara), Oisin Quinn, Mark McElroy (Ryan McAlinden), Niall Colton, Kevin McElroy, Eoin Costello, John McKenna 2-6, Niall Nolan 0-1, Cormac Hughes 0-1, Rowan Smart, Dermot Colton (Aaron Moreland), Sean Irwin. Subs not used: Michael Coffey, Matthew Mullan, Michael McAllister.
Bright 4-4 Bredagh 5-12, Bright 7th May In a game played in gale force winds Bredagh showed no little skill and great battling qualities to win a match which looked like a potential banana skin.
With the wind in the first half Bredagh intelligently picked off long range points early on from Kevin McElroy and Niall Nolan. As the game progressed the play became more adventurous and a brilliant Niall Nolan pass put John McKenna through for the first goal. Aaron Moreland clipped over another point and was then upended for a penalty - John McKenna despatched it to the net. Michael Coffey and Michael Mullan were a constant threat, and Bredagh went in at half time looking quite comfortable. The Bredagh mentors changed the tactics in the second half, when against a fierce wind they insisted on a short passing and running game. Paddy Donnelly was introduced to great effect in midfield and this gave Eoin Costello the freedom to push forward. Despite conceding a couple of goals midway through the half Mark McElroy and Ryan McAlinden in particular, marshalled the defence well. Up front Deo Colton, Sean Irwin and the impressive Eoin Costello scored goals, whilst John McKenna brought his tally to 2-6 for the second week in a row with a couple of points.
Bredagh finish the stronger team and ran out worthy winners.
TEAM & SCORERS: Sean Armstrong, Michael McAllister, Mark McElroy, Oisin Quinn, Niall Colton 0-1, Cormac White, Kevin McElroy 0-2, Eoin Costello 1-0, Rowan Smart (Paddy Donnelly), Niall Nolan 0-2, John McKenna 2-6, Matthew Mullan (Dermot Colton 1-0), Aaron Moreland 0-1, Michael Coffey (Sean Irwin 1-0).
Bredagh 13-15 Teconnaught 1-2, Cherryvale 24th May Less than three hours after a round trip of almost 100 miles Bredagh took the field against Teconnaught at Cherryvale. This was a test of character and they passed with flying colours! Teconnaught scored first and replacement goalkeeper Matthew Hollywood had some early scares, but the Bredagh attack soon got into gear, spearheaded by Simon McCluney (who ended the day with 2-2), and Deo Colton. The result was never in doubt, the whole squad got a good run out, and everybody contributed well to the victory.
TEAM & SCORERS: C WHITE, M MCAFEE, A MORELAND (2-1), S IRWIN (1-1), R MCALINDEN, N NOLAN, P DONNELLY, M COFFEY, J MCKENNA (1-4), M MCALLISTER, N COLTON, O QUINN, E COSTELLO, (1-2), K MCELROY, M MCELROY, M HOLLYWOOD (2-1), D COLTON (3-0), D O'HARA, C HUGHES (1-2), S ARMSTRONG, R SMART (0-1), M MULLAN (0-1), S MCCLUNEY (2-2).
Kilclief 1-2 Bredagh 7-21, Kilclief 28th May Another excellent performance exemplified by a 4-1 scoring burst by Matthew Hollywood in the first 20 minutes. He had to be switched with goalkeeper Sean Armstrong who swiftly popped over his first point of the campaign. John McKenna with 3-4 was the other main scorer, but it was a very good all round performance, copper-fastened by defenders Micho Coffey and Michael McAllister.
Squad as in the previous match, apart from Simon McCluney, Michael Mullan and Deccy O'Hara.
SCORERS: E COSTELLO 0-3, P DONNELLY 0-4, C HUGHES 0-1, J MCKENNA 3-4,
M HOLLYWOOD 4-1, N NOLAN 0-3, S ARMSTRONG 0-1, N COLTON 0-2, K MCELROY 0-2.
Bredagh 10-11 Liatriom 3-2, Cherryvale 4th June Good win for the boys with Eugene Irwin taking the reins in the absence of Frank McKenna. Mick Coffey kept everyone (well nearly everyone) happy by refereeing a good contest on a fine evening at Cherryvale! The points don't really matter as Bredagh has already qualified comfortably for the top section in the second part of the League.
Saul 1-1 Bredagh 6-16, Saul Monday May 9th The scoreline says it all! This team continues to improve with every game and despite the absence of a couple of key players, they overwhelmed Saul. The first-half was a relatively scrappy affair, but goals from Deo Colton (2) and Sean Irwin, coupled with another Sean Armstrong penalty save, had Bredagh in the driving seat by half-time. The second-half was an exhibition of how football should be played, as Eoin Costello, Kevin McElroy, Niall Nolan, John McKenna, etc, ran Saul ragged. Niall scored an early goal and when John McKenna caught the keeper's kick-out from the "21", fully 50 yards out, and chipped him for the first of his two goals, it was well and truly over for Saul. Saturday's Feile will be a sterner test, but this was a good run-out.
TEAM & SCORERS:Sean Armstrong, Matthew McAllister, Mark McElroy, Ryan McAlinden, Oisin Quinn, Niall Colton 0-1, Cormac White, Kevin McElroy, Eoin Costello 0-2, John McKenna 2-8, Niall Nolan 1-3, Cormac Hughes, Sean Irwin 1-0, Dermot Colton 2-1, Rowan Smart 0-1. SUBS: Matthew McAfee, Matthew Mullan, Aaron Moreland.
Down Feile, Banbridge Saturday May 17th Bredagh went into this Feile against some of the strongest teams in Down with a point to prove. We know we can mix it with the top teams in the county - and we proved it !!!
Bredagh finished joint top with three wins in four games, beating Newry Shamrocks, Mayobridge and Ballymartin.
The first match against Banbridge was a scrappy affair, played on a shortened pitch in terrible weather conditions. Banbridge were big and strong and went into an early 3-0 lead with the wind. Bredagh played better in the second half but failed to take their chances. The management team was convinced though, that Banbridge would take points off some of the others - so it was all to play for in the next match against Newry Shamrocks.
Shamrocks went into an early lead, but Eoin Costello scored a magnificent 1-2 from play to keep Bredagh in it. Full forward Matthew Hollywood got another goal and Shamrocks led by a point with minutes to go. Then up popped the hard working John McKenna from 25 yards to crash in a brilliant goal to put Bredagh ahead. Mark McElroy and Sean Armstrong marshalled their defence and Bredagh held on for a well deserved victory - Bredagh 3-1, Shamrocks 2-2
Next up was Mayobridge, who had six players in Shane King's squad last year and the Down captain. This was the big one! Bredagh trailed 1-1 to 1-3 at half time, but what was to happen from there on in was to surprise everyone watching - Bredagh were not to concede another score in the tournament!
Paddy Donnelly and Cormac Hughes took control in the second half aided by Sean Irwin, who was buzzing at this stage. Bredagh scored five brilliant points without reply to run out winners by 1-6 to 1-3.
Bredagh knew they had to beat Ballymartin to win the section and qualify for next week's semis. The boys dug deep, with captain Niall Colton and Oisin Quinn leading by example. Matthew Hollywood was a thorn in the Ballymartin side - they tried everything to upset him, but at the end of the game Bredagh had the last laugh, running out comfortable 1-4 to 0-0 winners.
SUMMARY - The boys were a credit to the club, this was their best performance ever - they deserve it. As coach Eugene Irwin said afterwards "They just keep getting better". All members of the squad played their part in the tournament at some stage and they all did very well. But just as pleasing was the support from all the subs in all the games.
Bredagh Squad: C WHITE, M MCAFEE, A MORELAND, R MCALINDEN, S IRWIN, P DONNELLY, M COFFEY, J MCKENNA, M MCALLISTER, N COLTON, O QUINN, E COSTELLO, K MCELROY, M MCELROY, M HOLLYWOOD, D COLTON, C HUGHES, R SMART, M MULLAN, S ARMSTRONG
Bredagh Played 4 Points 6; Banbridge 4-6; Mayobridge 4-4; Newry Shamrocks 4-4; Ballymartin 4-0.
An Riocht 2-5 Bredagh 2-3, An Riocht May 24th Bredagh went into this game considered by many as rank outsiders against the reigning All-Ireland Feile Champions, but came away from Kilkeel unlucky to lose and with the respect of all who were watching. With the wind in the first half Bredagh ran up an early 1-2 to 0-0 lead through Sean Irwin and Niall Nolan points and a long-range Paddy Donnelly goal. An Riocht fought back well and scored two points before the break. The wind and rain got up at half time and An Riocht hit an early wind-assisted goal and point. Bredagh fought back with a Niall Colton goal from a free to lead by two, but it wasn't to be and another 1-2 from An Riocht saw them run out winners despite a late Matthew Hollywood point.
SUMMARY: There were compliments from the referee and the Clann na Banna mentors on the stylish Bredagh style of play, and it was a great achievement to reach these stages of a major competition. The boys were a credit to themselves and the club, and will have learnt from the experience.

Bredagh 9-15 Bright 0-2 , Cherryvale June 11th The first match in the 'A' Section of the League proved to be a bit of a damp squib - although sadly there were a few fireworks of a different kind after the final whistle from an ill-disciplined Bright team. Bredagh ran out easy winners, in a game which saw excellent debuts from Brian Wright (0-1) and the speedy Peter Graham (2-2). Coramc White had a great game at the back, whilst Matthew Hollywood (3-2) and Cormac Hughes (0-2) impressed up front. The next two games against Kilcoo and Carryduff will provide stiffer tests, but this was a good work out.
Other games: St Johns v Kilcoo and Loughinisland v Carryduff
Bredagh 0-11 Kilcoo 6-7, Cherryvale June 18th Although Bredagh scored 11 scores to Kilcoo's 13, the goal tally tells the true story of a team on top of it's game versus one having an off night. With a few exceptions Bredagh failed to do themselves justice. Despite long periods of concerted pressure they were unable to convert enough scoring chances, yet when Kilcoo broke forward they inevitably hit the net. It was a disapointing evening for the Bredagh boys, but they should not be too down-hearted, Kilcoo's celebrations at the end of the game is a measure of how far they have come on in the last year. Next Wednesday they have a chance to make amends against Carryduff.
Squad as usual. Scorers: John McKenna 0-4, Niall Colton 0-2, Paddy Donnelly 0-1, Matthew Hollywood 0-1, Peter Graham 0-1, Eoin Costello 0-1, Cormac Hughes 0-1.

Bredagh 1-9 Carryduff 2-7, Cherryvale June 25th Frank McKenna and Eugene Irwin can be proud of the boys despite the disappointment of just missing out on a draw or even a win. We went into the game without key players such as Matthew Holywood, and duly went behind early on, 1-2 to no score. At half-time, it was 1-4 to 0-3 and three quick points had Carryduff ahead by seven points. Bredagh could have caved in, but the physically smaller team showed great courage, heart and skill to completely run the contest in the closing 20 minutes. We scored seven times in this period to Carryduff's lone breakaway goal, and only a goal-line clearance in the last minute prevented Bredagh from completing a fabulous comeback. It may seem strange to say this, but the manner of defeat was encouraging. Last year, Bredagh were heavily beaten and outclassed in their games with Carryduff. This time, the big crowd marvelled at the stylish football played by the likes of Deccie O'Hara and Oisin Quinn at the back, Cormac Hughes, Niall Nolan and John McKenna in a wonderful half-forward line, and U-12 star Conor McCloskey who marked his debut with a real poacher's goal, straight from Clones! The strike reduced the deficit to three points, 1-7 to 1-4, and was followed by fine points by Cormac Hughes and Paddy Donnelly (some observers insisted that Paddy's efforts went through the net and was actually a goal). Carryduff relieved the pressure with a goal, but again Bredagh came back strongly, scoring points through Aaron Moreland and Niall Nolan to leave just two points in it. A furious scramble in the Carryduff goalmouth saw John McKenna get ball in his arms, but somehow the ball was blocked and Kevin McElroy's goalbound effort was diverted over the bar. Eoin Costello almost got through for an equalising point in injury-time, but Carryduff were mighty relieved to hear the final whistle.
REVIEW: Bredagh's coaches must be congratulated for the progress made this year with this squad, though there is more work to be done. For example, on free-taking and on going for points with conviction. Bredagh missed at least four scoreable frees and kept dropping balls into the goalkeeper, when the game was there for the winning.
SCORERS: Conor McCloskey 1-0, Paddy Donnelly 0-3, John McKenna 0-2, Kevin McElroy 0-1, Niall Nolan 0-1, Cormac Hughes 0-1, Aaron Moreland 0-1.
Also played today - Kilcoo v Loughinisland and Bright v St Johns
St Johns 6-3 Bredagh 2-6, St Johns July 2nd

With many players missing on holiday Bredagh Coach Eugene Irwin had to call on the services of U-12 players Conor McCloskey, Donal Hughes, Marcus Young and Patrick Hannity. They all gave outstanding performances showing that they were more than capable of competing with a big and strong St John's squad. The reshaped Bredagh team rose to the challenge and the result belied the superb all-round effort, with notable performances from Cormac Hughes, Niall Nolan, Niall Colton and Oisin Quinn. Bredagh showed true grit in the second half when most teams would have folded. Making use of their smooth short-passing game they took the game to St John's and scored several impressive points, with Cormac Hughes now assuming a leading role. The management were very proud of the great character shown by everyone who played. It reflects the growing confidence which is now widespread throughout all of the youth teams. Coach Eugene Irwin thanks all of the parents who supplied lifts and helped out.
TEAM: Sean Armstrong, Matthew McAfee, Mark McElroy, Ryan McAlinden, Oisin Quinn, Kevin McElroy, Declan O'Hara, Niall Nolan, Niall Colton, Peter Graham, Cormac Hughes, Conor McCloskey, Michael Coffey, Marcus Young, Aaron Moreland, Michael McAlister, Donal Hughes, Paddy Hannity.

Og Sport U-15 7-a-side, Newry Saturday August 9th Two goals by Dermot Coffey and a Quarter-final knock-out of old rivals Banbridge were the highlights of a memorable day for the Bredagh boys at this prestigious event. Once more, the club has been seen to be at the big events in the county and once again they have acquitted themselves very well. Full-back Coffey had never scored for Bredagh before today, so his 2-1 showed that he is well-suited to the smaller game and the defeat of Banbridge reversed a defeat at the Feile earlier in the season, which showed that progress has been made. Bredagh were unlucky to be drawn in a tough group with eventual finalists Kilcoo, Ballymartin and Newry Shamrocks, and although the performances were good, the results meant that we entered the Shield competition. This was where Bredagh defeated Banbridge, before bowing out in the semi-finals to Longstone by 4-6 to 2-3. Considering the fact that the squad had never played sevens football before, and that they took a few games to get the hang of it, this was a fine day's work, which was justly rewarded by Kieran Boyle dipping into his pocket to buy ice-creams on the way home! His son, Niall, also deserves a mention for being our best player, though all thirteen deserve credit and hopefully the experience will have boosted their confidence for future games. The season may be all-but over, but it would be nice to keep the squad together for challenge games and special coaching sessions over the next month or two.
