Bryansford 8-3 v Bredagh 6-0,      Bryansford    Sun 11th May

A new piece of history was made on Sunday 11th May when the first ever Bredagh U-16 Girls team played Bryansford in the U-16 Down League.

The girls were a credit to the club and played with great heart against last year's U16 championship winners.
Throw-up
Team Captain Amy Cunningham opted to play with the wind in the first half and Bredagh got off to a storming start when long balls into the Bryansford defence dropped to Kathryn Quinn who stuck 2 goals in the net to put Bredagh ahead.

Bryansford stormed back to score a few points and Bredagh were unlucky to concede an own goal when a rebound hit off the post against a Bredagh player and into the net.

The scores were level and Bredagh continued to hold their own with outstanding defensive play from Hannah Murrah and Orla Day, helped by great fielding and clearing from full-back Kate Hollywood.

Bredagh continued to press forward with Caoimhe McCullagh and Cassie Moane competing well against a tough Bryansford defence. Emma Mulhorn put Bredagh ahead with a goal scored from a long-range effort that dipped just under the crossbar.

Despite the Bredagh pressure, Bryansford put together some great hand-passing moves which resulted in two more goals. Bredagh responded when a brilliant run by Clare Byrne saw her beat two Bryansford players before giving a great pass across the square to Kathryn Quinn who made it a hat-trick of goals.

Bryansford added a few more points to leave the half-time score Bryansford 4-2 v Bredagh 5-0

Well-deserved rest at half-time

Against the breeze Bredagh were under pressure for much of the second half but they stood firm with Anna McAlliney in goals making some good saves and Polly Moane showing well for the Bredagh kick-outs. Even when the ball reached the full-back line Lisa Kelly, a real team-player, was always on-hand to make the all-important interception and tough-tackling Sinead Norwood stuck well to her player.

The Bredagh half-back line worked tirelessly but struggled to get the ball past the midfield area. Bryansford made the pressure count with two goals when long kicks into the penalty area dropped just under the crossbar. Bredagh were not finished yet and responded by pressing forward. Good chasing and catching from Moya McGurk, who showed great heart, was rewarded when she caught a ball, beat a Bryansford defender and scored a goal to bring Bredagh back into the match. This was followed up by Cassie Moane, who did brilliantly against two Bryansford defenders to break the ball, which was then picked up by Kathryn Quinn and dispatched to the Bryansford net.

With 10 minutes to go Bredagh were only a point behind and had another goal chance which went a begging. A brilliant run from the Bryansford midfielder resulted in a goal and Bryansford showed their determination and experience in scoring another goal and a point to kill the match.

Bright 4-4 v Bredagh 3-6,      Bright    Sun 18th May

The Bredagh U16 girls came from 12 points down to within a point of Bright on Sunday 18th May. The U16 Down league game was played in monsoon-line conditions in Downpatrick.
Bredagh were playing against a ferocious breeze in the first half and had to work hard to stay in touch. Bright started well and scored two early goals despite great defending from Sinead Norwood and Hannah Murray.

Anna McAlliney made a couple of great saves in goals but Bredagh struggled to get the ball out of their own half.

Gradually Bredagh managed to put some pressure on the Bright defence and Emma Mulhern put Bredagh on the scoreboard with a long-rang goal. Good hustling from Caoimhe McCullagh and Kathryn Quinn kept the ball down at the Bright end and Clare Byrne was very unlucky when she pounced on a loose ball to finish to the net, only for the goal to be disallowed for a square ball.
Bright put together some good attacking play and this was rewarded with a couple more points despite tenacious defending from Lisa Kelly, Jamie Willigan and Orla Day.

As half-time approached the defence tired to concede another goal to leave the half-time score Bright 4-4 v Bredagh 1-0

In the second Bredagh came out full of determination to reverse the first-half score and played with great heart and conviction. A goal from Moya McGurk set them on their way and this was supplemented by great points from Emma Mulhern and Clare Byrne. With Amy Cunningham making great interceptions at centre half-back and great work-rate from Katie Campbell, Bredagh piled on the pressure. Intelligent running from Emma Mulhern and Clare Byrne put a lot of pressure on the Bright defence. Polly Moane was catching everything in the air and distributing the ball well and when Moya McGurk got a second goal, it looked as if nothing could stop Bredagh.

Bright responded and ran at the Bredagh defence, but Bredagh held firm with good team-work from Hannah Murrah, Amy Cunningham and Louise Fitzpatrick preventing Bright from getting any scoring opportunities. Emma Mulhern added another point to leave just 2 points between the teams but good defending from Bright held Bredagh at bay for a crucial 5 minute-spell. With time running out a long ball into the Bright penalty area fell to brilliant forward Cassie Moane and she stuck it over the ball to leave only a point between the teams.

Bredagh ran out of time and were unlucky not to get a point.

The girls were gutted by the result but showed exceptional heart and determination to come back from such a deficit.

Bredagh v Downpatrick,      Cherryvale    Wed28th May

The Bredagh U16 girls got their first league win of the season against Downpatrick on Wednesday night.
Bredagh started well and good passing from the half-forward line of Emma Mulhern, Polly Moane and Clare Byrne put Downpatrick under pressure right from the start. A goal from Emma Mulhern at centre half-forward put Bredagh ahead. Bredagh won the kick-out and the ball was then well worked into Caoimhe McCullagh, to finish to the net to get bredagh off to a flying start. Downpatrick responded with some good running from midfield but the Downpatrick midfielders were well-marshalled by Hannah Murray and Amy Cunningham.Bredagh added a few points but Downpatrick responded with a very good goal after strong running from midfield. Ketie Campbell played smart football for Bredagh, with good interceptions and long passing into the forward line causing a lot of problems for the Downpatrick defence. Bredagh didn't have it all their own way and Downpatrick scored a few points. The defence was well-marshalled by Lisa Kelly with Jamie Willingham, Orla Day and Sinead Norwood standing firm. Approaching half-time great vision from Cassie Moane saw her play the ball through to Caoimhe McCullagh who got another goal to keep Bredagh ahead. At the other end Sinead Norwood did a tremendous block to save a certain goal.

Half-time score Bredagh 3-3 v Downpatrick 1-4

In the second-half Bredagh were under pressure but fought hard to stay on top. Anna McAlliney was very reliable in goals and Moya McGurk and Louise Fitzpatrick worked hard in defence to keep Downpatrick at bay. Good running from Clare Byrne and Polly Moane at half-forward enabled Bredagh to gain the upper hand and good running from Meadbh Whyte at corner-forward added to the threat of the full-forward line. Katie Campbell and Amy Cunningham continued their excellent work from the first half to keep the ball in the Downpatrick half.

Downpatrick responded with a goal and a couple of points. Clare Byrne was unlucky not to score a point when she ran the length of the pitch only to shoot narrowly wide but Bredagh continued to press forward and Caoimhe McCullagh scored another goal to keep some daylight between the teams. Bredagh fought back with another goal from Caoimhe McCullagh, who contested and won the ball before finishing to the net. Good hustling from Nicci Linden, Sarah Nugent and Nicky Pauley made it hard for Downpatrick to get back into the match.
