Championship Reports

Darragh Cross 2-1 Bredagh 2-1,    Saturday August 9th,    D Cross
Darragh Cross conceded the points before the start of this All County Division Three opener. They have three very good hurlers who are over-age and as they have no U-14 team the only place they can get competition is on their U-12 team. The Bredagh players played, not knowing the points were in the bag, and what a perfomance they served up. Bredagh played with wind advantage in the first half and put a lot of pressure on the Darragh defence but the scores did not come easy as the home team played with great skill and passion. Eventually Donal Hughes did find a way through and struck a great effort to the top corner of the net. Five minutes later the same player cracked in a fine ground stroke giving the Darragh keeper no chance. Half-time score 2-0 to 0-0.
Bredagh knew they would have a tough second half, playing into the wind. The home team struck an early point and despite some sterling defending from Paddy Woods, Diddles, Daniel Higgins and Co., Darragh Cross added two goals to leave Bredagh trailing by a point with five minutes remaining. They stuck to the task in very humid conditions and were rewarded with a brilliant point on the run by the impressive Ruairi Johnston. Emmett Costello was sandwiched in the six-yard box as he bore down on goal with one minute remaining but the hometown referee waved away the protests.
At the end of the game Joe McStay the Darragh manager called all the players from each team to the middle of the pitch and told them that this was the best hurling match that Darragh Cross were involved in all season. It was hard to disagree!
TEAM & SCORERS: Ben McCaughey, Ciaran Kelly, Paddy Woods, Peta McAlister, Daniel Higgins, Donal McKegney, Diddles, Donal Hughes 2-0, Emmett Costello, James Day, Ruairi Johnston 0-1, Emmett Dougan, Clare McKenna, Stevie McSherry, Chloe Dougan, Sian Diegan, John Kelly and Daniel Russell.

Castlewellan 2-2 Bredagh 4-0,    Saturday August 16th,    Castlewellan
Yes, another title for the hurlers of Bredagh! With Clonduff withdrawing from the League, today's clash with Castlewellan became the Division Three decider. We were placed in the third division out of four of the All County Leagues, due to impressive performances in the East Down Blitzs’. This was our first match against Castlewellan at this level and what a cracker it turned out to be. Bredagh U-12s turned in their best performance of the season; they were outstanding, and needed to be as Castlewellan were a very useful outfit. The match was played in perfect conditions at sun-drenched Castlewellan and Bredagh’s first half performance was truly awesome. Keeper Ben McCaughey and the entire defensive unit repelled the Castlewellan strikeforce time and again while Ben Horner and Donal Hughes gave an exhibition at midfield. Emmett Costello, Sean Lecky and the Dougan siblings, Emmett and Chloe were outstanding in attack. Bredagh went ahead with a well taken goal by Sean Lecky after great approach work from Ben Horner and Sian Diegan. The same player doubled a Donal Hughes cross to the Castlewellan net for his and Bredagh’s second. Castlewellan kept pressing and were rewarded with a well taken goal on the stroke of half time leaving the score 2-0 to 1-0 at the break. The second half was nail biting stuff as Castlewellan tried to stage a comeback. They struck an early point but Bredagh replied with a well taken Donal Hughes goal. The home side replied with a pointed free before Ben Horner sent a rasping shot to the net. Caslewellan did not give up and scored a fine goal of their own. This made for a tense final five minutes but Bredagh held out for a famous four-point victory.
TEAM & SCORERS: Ben McCaughey, Damhan Farmer, Paddy Woods, Peita McAlister, Daniel Higgins, Donal McKegney, Michael Magee, Ben Horner 1-0, Donal Hughes 1-0, James Day, Emmett Costello, Chloe Dougan, Sian Diegan, Emmett Dougan and Sean Lecky 2-0. Subs John Kelly and Daniel Russell.

League Reports

Darragh Cross Blitz ,      Darragh Cross    3rd May
Bredagh Under-12 hurlers made history by playing in the club's first competitive hurling match on Saturday, May 3rd. Indeed they played in three matches when they competed in the East Down Blitz held at Darragh Cross. Four teams took part, with Bredagh and the host club being joined by St John’s and Carryduff. Despite missing the services of two of our top young hurlers, Ruairi Johnston and Emmett Costello, it was a strong panel of 22 that travelled. This was a keenly contested competition and Bredagh, with two wins and one defeat, shared the title with Darragh Cross and Carryduff, who also ended on four points.

Bredagh 8-1 St John’s 0-0
Bredagh were certainly in determined mood and went a goal ahead on two minutes when young Ronan McKegney doubled on a crossfield ball from Donal Hughes to rifle in a superb opener. This set the tone and Ben Horner with a great hat-trick, Donal Hughes (1-1) and goals from Stevie McSherry, Sean Lecky and James Day left St John’s reeling.

Bredagh 0-0 Darragh Cross 0-1
Bredagh had hardly time to draw breath before lining out against Darragh Cross. The home side took an early one point lead and amazingly this was to be the only score of the game. This was a tough encounter and despite having the majority of the play Bredagh just couldn’t convert the scores.

Bredagh 3-0 Carryduff 0-0
The final match was against old rivals Carryduff and ended in a great win for Bredagh with excellent goals from Ben Horner, Donal Hughes and Ben McCaughey.

Although all 22 squad members played their part, and special mention must go to Paddy Woods and Donal McKegney at the heart of a defence that conceded one solitary point over the three games, and to Donal Hughes for his excellent midfield performances and Ben Horner who took some lovely scores.

Bredagh Panel:
Matthew Mullan, Michael Johnston, Paddy Woods (Captain), Charlie McGrath, Daniel Higgins, Donal McKegney, Pearce Leitch, Donal Hughes, Michael (Diddles)Magee, Ben Walker, Ben Horner, Sean Lecky, Lauren Donnelly, Ben McCaughey, Stevie McSherry, James Day, Sian Deighan, Chloe Dougan, Ronan McKegney, John Kelly, Dillon Hansen and James Cormican.

Ballycran manager Hugh Gilmore (pictured between Danny Hughes and Anne Costello) visited Bredagh in 2002 to lend his support to the promotion of hurling and camogie.

It's not just boys hurling with Bredagh - there's also Bredagh Camogs! These pictures are from training in early 2003, and the picture below is from the Hurling/Camogie Academy in the summer of 2002.

Bredagh v Portaferry,      Cherryvale    April 26th 4.00
Two games were played against the boys from the Ards who showed super skills which have been honed over years of practice. Bredagh held their own well and learned invaluable experience from the matches. Our appreciation goes to Portaferry for coming to Belfast to give us the games.

Carryduff Blitz,      Carryduff    Saturday May 17th
Bredagh win 2 out of 3 at Carryduff Blitz
Another successful outing for Bredagh U12 hurlers as they defeated Carryduff and Darragh Cross and lost narrowly to Kilclief. The first match against the host club was a close encounter. Played in soggy conditions both teams battled hard and at half time they were on level terms at one goal each, the Bredagh goal coming from star midfielder Ben Horner. After the break Bredagh upped the tempo and despite going a point down came back to win with scores from Donal Hughes (point) and Clare McElroy (goal) - Final Score Carryduff 1-1 Bredagh 2-1

As conditions worsened Bredagh went straight into their second match against Kilclief and were rocked by an early goal. Donal Hughes scored a great second half goal to bring the sides level but Kilclief with fresher legs finished the stronger with a late scoring burst of 1-1 - Final Score Bredagh 1-0 Kilclief 2-1

Bredagh had a score to settle in the third game when they came up against Darragh Cross who had beaten them by a point two weeks ago. Darragh Cross took an early one goal lead but Bredagh came back strongly. They threw everything they had at the Darragh defence and were rewarded with three well taken goals from Ben Horner, Charlie McGrath and Clare McKenna. This was a fantastic victory against a much physically stronger side - Final Score Bredagh 3-0 Darragh Cross 1-0

SUMMARY - Again every member of the 19-strong squad played their part but special mention must go to defenders Paddy Woods, Donal McKegney, Daniel Higgins and Pearce Leitch for their long clearances and tenacious tackling. At midfield Ben Horner and Donal Hughes were the stars of the competition and up front Michael (Diddles) Magee, Charlie McGrath and Clare McKenna showed they had an eye for goal.

Unbeaten at Kilclief Blitz,      Kilclief    Saturday May 31st
Having lost one match out of three in the last two Blitz competitions, it was a determined and focused 20-strong squad that arrived on the shores of Strangford Lough on Saturday morning for the Kilclief Blitz - they wanted to go one better.

Bredagh were first on against the host club and knew this would be their toughest assignment of the day and so it proved. Strengthened by the return of Emmett Costello and Ruairi Johnston, Bredagh were in confident mood and would not accept defeat against the team that beat them narrowly at Carryduff two weeks previous. Despite falling behind to early Kilclief scores (1-1) Bredagh fought back and a Ben Horner goal left just a single point between them at the break. In the second-half the excitement rose as these two evenly-matched teams battled for supremacy. Donal Hughes scored a great goal to edge Bredagh ahead but Kilclief replied with a goal of their own. Donal then levelled with a point and a minute later Bredagh were awarded a free some 40 yards out. The referee indicated it was the last shot and had to be scored direct. Donal’s shot looked to be going over but dipped and was saved on the line as the final whistle sounded. So close to victory! Final Score Kilclief 2-1 Bredagh 2-1

The Darragh Cross match was another tough encounter but Bredagh looked the more accomplished outfit and ran out winners on a scoreline of 2-1 to 0-0, with goals from Emmett Costello and Ruairi Johnston, and the point from Donal Hughes. Bredagh saved their best display until the final match when they romped home against Carryduff. By this stage they were playing with more confidence and flair. Ben Horner had moved to midfield and scored 1-1. His partner Donal Hughes got two points and there were well-taken goals from Chloe Dougan, Ruairi Johnston and Pearse Leitch. Final Score: Bredagh 4-3 Carryduff 2-1.

Bredagh 4-3 Darragh Cross 2-0,      Cherryvale    June 12th
The team got off to a winning start in the revised League with a comprehensive win. The early exchanges were closely-contested and the visitors scored a goal, but Bredagh were ahead with a well-taken Charlie McGrath goal and a Ben Horner point. For the remainder of the half Bredagh upped their workrate and points by Ben Walker and Donal Hughes left the half-time score 1-3 to 1-0. The home side came out in the second-half fired up and determined to stamp their authority on the game. This they did in some style as they cracked in three goals from Clare McKenna, Ben Horner and another from the impressive Charlie McGrath. To their credit, Darragh Cross fought hard to get back into the game but found no way past a resolute defence in which Paddy Woods, Emmett Costello and Diddles Magee were superb. Special mention too for the goalkeeper Matthew Mullan who was very safe between the posts and who brought off one breathtaking save, diving to his left. A late goal left the final score: Bredagh 4-3 Darragh Cross 2-0.
TEAM & SCORERS: Matthew Mullan, Michael Johnston, Paddy Woods, Ben McCaughey, Daniel Higgins, Emmett Costello, Diddles Magee, Donal Hughes (0-1) Ben Horner (1-1), Pearce Leitch, Raurai Johnston, Charlie McGrath (2-0), Stevie McSherry, Clare McKenna(1-0), Sian Deagnan. Subs (all played) Clare McElroy, Daniel Russell, James Day, John Kelly, Ben Walker (0-1) Rebeka and Rachel.

Bredagh 2-1 Kilclief 3-3,      Cherryvale    June 24th
This was not exactly a game of two halves, rather 75/25. For three quarters of the match Bredagh played well below what they are capable of and as a result found themselves trailing 1-3 to 0-0 at the break and 3-3 to 0-0 with 15 minutes remaining. A number of positional switches and the realisation that the game was slipping away sparked them into life and the fightback was on. First we were treated to an inspirational overhead strike for a point by Ben Horner. The same player, who had moved to attack from midfield, followed up with a well-taken goal. Minutes later Emmett Costello flashed another great goal to the Kilclief net to leave just five points between the teams. However it was too little too late, and as the time ticked away so did Bredagh’s chance of snatching a win.
REVIEW: What Bredagh can take from this match is the knowledge that when they meet Kilclief again in the away leg of this league they will need to compete for 60 minutes and if they do they can record their first victory over these old rivals.
TEAM: Matthew Mullan, Michael Mullan, Paddy Woods, Peta McAllister, Daniel Higgins, Emmett Costello 1-0, Michael Magee, Donal Hughes, Ben Horner 1-1, Ben Walker, Charlie McGrath, James Day, Sian Deigan, Ruairi Johnston and Claire McKenna.

Bredagh 6-2 Carryduff 1-2,      Cherryvale    Thursday August 7th
The team served up a great display against neighbours Carryduff at a stifling hot Cherryvale. Short a number of first-team regulars, they showed great commitment as they withstood an early onslaught from the visitors. Indeed Carryduff raced into a 1-2 to 0-0 lead after just five minutes but Bredagh settled to the task. Emmett Costello and Donal Hughes began to exert their influence at midfield and the forwards thrived on a good supply of ball. Stevie McSherry, Emmett Costello and Sean Lecky each struck goals while Donal Hughes saw his effort cannon off the crossbar for a point to leave the half-time score 3-1 to 1-2. Bredagh killed the game off in the second half with some great controlled hurling. They kept Carryduff scoreless in this half with fine defensive work from Paddy Woods, Daniel Higgins and Michael Magee. The pick of the forwards were Stevie McSherry, Sean Lecky and young Emmett Dougan who made his first step up from Under-10. Bredagh notched up the same again (3-1) in this half to leave a 12-point winning margin. This was a good run-out before Saturday's first match in the All County Divison Three League against Darragh Cross.
TEAM & SCORERS: Ben McCaughey, Michael Johnston, Paddy Woods, Peta Mcalister, Daniel Higgins, Michael Magee, Ciaran Kelly, Emmett Costello 2-1, Donal Hughes 0-1, James Day, Pearce Leitch, Emmett Dougan, Sian Deigan, Sean Lecky 2-0 and Stevie McSherry 2-0. Subs: John Kelly and Daniel Russell.
