Championship Reports

Bredagh 5-2 Carryduff 0-1, Sunday April 18
The Bredagh boys were brilliant! It wasn't just the score but the all-round attitude that was so impressive. Joe Shields was 'absolutely immense' according to mentor Micky Young. Joe scored 4-1 from midfield and was closely followed by the fast-improving John Mongan and the magnificent Diarmaid Kielty. Stevie Dougal and Lorcan McMullan were also superb, while there were tremendous gutsy performances from unsung heroes Ciaran Cleary, Michael Deery and Seamus McCloskey who gave his best ever display. The boys go to a Blitz this weekend full of confidence.

East Down Blitz, Saturday June 5
The U-10s had a fantastic day at the latest East Down Blitz in Teconnaught. We fielded two teams which meant a total of ten games over three hours, and they were all a treat to watch. Both teams were superb with the highlights being a cracking Jack Carlin goal in the 1-2 to 1-1 win over Bryansford (on Jack's 9th birthday!), Caolan Schiable's no-nonense defending in all of the games, Joe Shields amazing energy to play in more than five games, some terrific point-taking in a win over Drumaness, a Daniel Mulvenna point on the turn, John Mongan's long clearances, Seamus McCloskey's solid performances in goals, and last but not least, Markie Quinn's goal in the defeat of Kilcoo! But don't take my word for it.. here are the reports from Eamon Mulvenna:

Scorers: Mark Quinn 1-0, Ruairi Sheridan 1-0, Joe Shields 0-1.

Match 4 - Bredagh 0-3 Castlewellan 1-2:

ML - Newry Bosco 3-1 Bredagh 2-5, Sunday June 6
Last year Bredagh began their League campaign with a narrow defeat at Newry Bosco but they made amends this time round with a one-point victory. Second-half goals by Niall Fitzpatrick and Jack Carlin helped turn things round after Bredagh had lost their three-point half-time lead. The boys led by four points when a 45 from Bosco was deflected to the Bredagh net in the last seconds of the game.

ML - Bredagh 4-4 Glenn 1-9, Monday June 7
Man of the Match Deccie Magee and two-goal hero Michael Woods were the stars of this latest victory for Bredagh U-10 footballers. Playing in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd at Cherryvale, the boys trailed a skilful Glenn side in the second-half by five points and nearly conceded a killer goal. But, this team is building a reputation for comebacks and they stormed back to go five ahead with goals from Magee and Woods. Glenn didn't know what had hit them until the final whistle. This was Bredagh's third day in-a-row in action with the East Down Blitz on Saturday and the first game in this Mayobridge League at Newry on Sunday. They staged a superb comeback in Newry as well, and could have been forgiven for being tired on Monday night, but instead the city boys won a terrific match and now have two wins out of two.
SCORERS:Michael Woods 2-0, Deccie Magee 1-1, Ruairi Sheridan 1-0, Joe Shields 0-2, Lorcan Smylie 0-1.

Lorcan Smylie flies through the air in this brilliant action picture from the SOUTH BELFAST NEWS, watched by Deccie Magee.

Bredagh U-10 boys footballers won the B trophy at the Carryduff Tournament with tremendous performances in all five games. We didn't lose a match and we didn't concede a single goal because goalkeepers Niall Fitzpatrick and Lorcan McMullan were in tremendous form. Our toughest game was in the first group when a 0-2 to 0-2 draw with Castlewellan (Joe Shields equalised with a free from the last kick) wasn't enough to qualify us for the A section in the second round of games. That's because Castlewellan beat St Patricks Lisburn by slightly more than us. We then strolled to the B title with big wins over St Teresas, St Endas from Omagh and Downpatrick. The boys really turned on the style with John Mongan moving to full-forward and bagging five goals! Joe Shields ran the show at midfield, Ronan McKegney worked very hard to back him up, Deccie Magee was superb at grabbing the breaking ball and running at defences to pick off brilliant points, Ciaran McColgan poached two goals (and a third according to Ciaran), Niall Fitz and Caolan Schiable both scored super points in the defeat of Downpatrick, and Oisin Smylie smashed the score of the tournament to the top corner of the net in the same game.
The defence was also rock solid in conceding a total of just 0-5 in their five games, with Niall Kelly excelling in a new position of corner-back, Diarmuid Kielty his reliable self at full-back and wing-half-backs Caolan Schiable and Michael Robinson tackling like tigers in all of the games. In short, the boys improved with every game and looked like world-beaters by the finish. It's a pity then that we didn't get the chance to challenge for the A trophy because Bredagh were as good as anything on show, but it was still fantastic to win a trophy and there's always next week at the prestigious Newry Mitchels Tournament.
Back row, left to right: Mark Quinn, Lorcan Smylie, Patrick McLaughlin, Niall Fitzpatrick, Caolan Schiable, John Mongan, Joe Steele, Diarmuid Kielty, Michael Woods, Ronan McKegney. Front row: Ciaran McColgan, Deccie Magee, Lorcan McMullan, Nicholas McCafferty, Oisin Smylie, Niall Kelly, Michael Robinson, Jack Carlin.

Longstone 3-3 Bredagh 3-2, Thursday July 1
Our U-10 League leaders suffered their first defeat in a tough and exciting tussle at Longstone, losing out to a late goal after dominating the exchanges. Deccie Magee scored a first-half goal and struck the crossbar, while Joe Shields knocked over a point, but we only led by a point at the break. Longstone hit back with a goal, then Nicholas McCafferty set up Lorcan Smylie for a Bredagh goal, they levelled with a point, Ronan McKegney set up Ciaran McColgan for a goal, but they finished with a point and then the winning goal. The real story was that the Bredagh boys probably went to Longstone fully expecting to win but they learned on the night that you get nothing easy when you go to places like this!

Bredagh 7-8 Clonduff 1-2, Monday July 5
The boys got back on track with a great second-half performance at Cherryvale. After the Longstone setback, Bredagh were a bit edgy in the first-half and missed a lot of chances. They led by 1-2 to 1-1 at the break, but inspired by 2-4 from Deccie Magee they steamrolled their opponents in the second period and ran out easy winners. James Durkan and Anto McManus came on as subs to score superb late goals. The U-10s now have four wins from five games.

SCORERS: Deccie Magee 2-4, Lorcan Smylie 2-0, Stephen Dougal 1-0, Anto McManus 1-0, James Durkan 1-0, Joe Shields 0-2, Lorcan McMullan 0-1, Ronan McKegney 0-1.

Carryduff Tournament, June 12

Bredagh U-10 Boys football captain Diarmuid Kielty with the Cup won at the Carryduff Tournament on Saturday June 12.

Rostrevor 1-2 Bredagh 7-3, Sunday June 20

What a result! Rostrevor beat Pearse Og by six points in the final of the Newry Mitchels Tournament on Saturday, yet our boys went to Rostrevor on Sunday morning and played them off the park. It's also our third straight win in the League and sends us to the top of the table. Ryan McGarry continues to improve dramatically, moving from corner-back to centre-half-back, while Deccie Magee ran through the home defences time and time again, and John Mongan banged in a couple of goals from full-forward.

Newry Mitchels Tournament, June 19
RESULTS

First Round - Bredagh 4-5 St Peter's, Lurgan 1-5

Second Round - Bredagh 1-7 Warrenpoint 1-2

Quarter-final - Bredagh 2-6 Saval 3-2 (AET)

Semi-final - Bredagh 1-1 Pearse Og, Armagh 0-7

22 heroes in the new U-10 jerseys, sponsored by Peake Blooms.

Back row, left to right:
Patrick McLaughlin, Nicholas McCafferty, Niall Fitzpatrick, Caolan Schiable, Lorcan McMullan, John Mongan, Jack Carlin, Michael Woods, Anto McManus. Middle Row: Mark Quinn, Joe Shields, Deccie Magee, Michael Cassidy, Oisin Smylie, Diarmuid Kielty, Ciaran McColgan, Ryan McGarry. Front row: Michael Robinson, Niall Kelly, Lorcan Smylie, Michael Woods, Ronan McKegney.

REPORT: History was made by the Bredagh boys when they won a epic battle with Saval to reach the semi-finals of this prestigious competition. The extra-time victory meant that they had gone further in the Newry Tournament than any Bredagh team before them. Pearse Og from Armagh proved to be too strong in the semi-finals, but Bredagh did superbly well to make the last four of a competition involving 32 of the best U-10 teams in the country. Na Fianna from Dublin were eliminated in the other semi-final.

The day started well with the boys christening the new 'lucky' U-10 jerseys in a big win over St Peter's from Lurgan, 4-5 to 1-5. Deccie Magee bagged three cracking goals, the last of which was bravely taken under the challenge of four defenders. Scorers: Deccie Magee 3-1, Niall Kelly 1-0, Joe Shields (2 frees), John Mongan 0-1 and Caolan Schiable 0-1. Warrenpoint took an early lead in the next game and Joe Shields sent a penalty over the crossbar. Nicholas McCafferty put us ahead but they got a goal and we needed a big effort in the second-half to stay in the knock-out stages. A free from Joe dropped into the net and there were great points scored by Michael Woods, Ciaran McColgan and Deccie. The real drama came in a showdown with Saval in the quarter-finals. We hit the woodwork twice in the first-half but still led by two points at the break, thanks to two frees from Joe Shields. Saval used the wind to their advantage in the second-half and caught us cold with two quick goals, leaving four points between the teams. Points from Deccie and Joe hauled us back into contention, but when they broke away for a point, we needed a goal and quick! It came in the dying seconds when a free from Joe was deflected to the Saval net. In extra-time, we again took the lead with a free from Joe but again they hit us with a goal and it looked to be all over. Anyone who has seen the Bredagh U-10s will know that they are battlers and they duly delivered once again with a brilliant goal to sneak the verdict by just one point.

Possibly the extra ten minutes of football tired the boys for the semi-final, but it has to be said that Pearse Og had some exceptional footballers and just about deserved their win. However, they were rocked when Deccie Magee burst through five challenges and buried the goal of the tournament midway through the first-half. The Ogs picked off their points but were lucky enough to see a couple of goalbound efforts from Bredagh cleared off the line. After the game, their relieved manager said that our boys were the best team they had met in the whole competition. All in all, it was a great day out with plenty for the boys and their travelling support to be proud of. And once again, Bredagh's reputation has been enhanced by their heroic efforts.

Silver Boots McCafferty!

Bredagh 8-6 Warrenpoint 0-4, Sunday August 1

Scorers: Lorcan McMullan 3-1 (pictured above), Deccie Magee 1-4, Michael Woods 2-0, Lorcan Smylie 1-1, and Joe Shields 1-0.

Burren 1-3 Bredagh 3-8, Wednesday August 11
Bredagh's u-10s put on a convincing display at Burren to come away with a comfortable victory and maintain their position at top of the league. The win was based on a very solid defence which gave little away with dairmaid kielty producing a faultless display at centre back ably supported by Ryan McGarry at centre half and well supported on the wings by patrick mclaughlin, rory cumiskey, michael robinson and caelin shablie with lorcam mcmullan giving nothing away in goals. As usual midfielder joe shields dominated his position with good support from john mongan who got the score of the game soloing from midfield before splitting the posts from distance. Up front the Bredagh boys performed well thru' stevie dougal at centre forward and top scorer ciaran mccolgan at full forward. Much of the damage was done down the wings where on the right smylie brothers, lorcan and ossian led their markers a merry dance and on the left deccie magee and daniel mulvenna, starting his first match, ran constantly at the burren defence winning frees that were easily dispatched by sharp shooter joe shields. Subs anto McManus, daniel mcgrenahan and peter rice performed well when being introduced in the third quarter.

Scorers: ciaran mccolgan 2.0, lorcan smylie 1.2, joe shields 0.3, john mongan 0.1, stevie dougal 0.1, oisin smylie 0.1.

Bredagh 2-3 Saval 3-4, Monday August 16
Bredagh U-10s suffered only their second defeat of the season when they lost narrowly to Saval. We were missing a number of key players – Joe Shields, Ryan McGarry, Ronan McKegney and John Mongan - but the depleted squad played very well against a stiff breeze during the first half and were unlucky to turn round one point in arrears, 0-2 to 0-1.

The smaller Bredagh team began to tire in the second-half and despite numerous superb blocks by Deccie Magee (pictured above) and lots of ‘blanket defence’ by Caolan Schiable & Co, Saval’s bigger players came to the fore. They had some very talented fielders and ball-players who responded when Ciaran McColgan’s goal put Bredagh ahead at the start of the half. In fact, every time Bredagh got close, like when Dominic McConville pointed and Nicholas McCafferty scored a cracking goal, Saval went upfield and banged in three terrific second-half goals. So a disappointing result and a setback to our League hopes, but the young 'uns showed well and will no doubt make up the backbone of the team for next year’s campaign. Mayobridge are undefeated and top the League (although they still have to meet Bredagh) but we will be relying on others to take points off Mayobridge to stand a chance of winning the League.

Squad & Scorers: Lorcan McMullan, Patrick McLaughlin, Diarmaid Kielty, Dario Angelone, Kieran Cleary, Caolan Schiable, Michael Robinson, Stevie Dougal, Deccie Magee 0-1, Michael Woods, Niall Fitzpatrick, Lorcan Smylie, Oisin Smylie, Ciaran McColgan 1-0, Daniel Mulvenna, Daniel McGrenaghan, Peter Rice, Anto McManus, Ruairi Doyle, Mark Quinn, Dominic McConville 0-1, Vittorio Angelone, Nicholas McCafferty 1-1.

Lavey Tournament Win! Saturday September 4th

U-10 Captain Ryan McGarry with the Cup won at the Lavey Tournament on. The competition was 10-a-side with two groups of four and all of the rest of the teams from South Derry - Lavey, Moneymore, Newbridge, Castledawson, Swatragh, Desertmartin and Greenlough.

RESULTS & SCORERS
Newbridge 0-1 Bredagh 3-4
- Ciaran McColgan 2-0, Deccie Magee 1-3, Joe Shields 0-2, Niall Kelly 0-1.
Moneymore 0-0 Bredagh 1-8 - Joe Shields 0-4, Ronan McKegney 0-3, Ciaran McColgan 1-0, Deccie Magee 0-1.
Semi-final - Castledawson 1-0 Bredagh 1-7 (level at half-time) - Ciaran McColgan 1-1, Deccie Magee 0-3, Joe Shields 0-2, Michael Woods 0-1.
Final - Moneymore 2-1 Bredagh 4-10 (level at half-time) - Joe Shields 2-5, Deccie Magee 1-4, Diarmaid Kielty 1-0, Michael Robinson 0-1.

SQUAD -John Mongan, Diarmaid Kielty, Ryan McGarry, Patrick McLaughlin, Deccie Magee, Joe Shields, Ronan McKegney, Michael Woods, Michael Robinson, Ciaran McColgan, Niall Kelly, Niall Fitzpatrick, Caolan Schiable.

REPORT - this trophy success was built on a solid defensive display, especially from goalkeeper John Mongan and centre-half-back Ryan McGarry, who became the first Bredagh person to lift the cup. 'Men of the Tournament' Joe Shields and Deccie Magee controlled midfield, scoring heavily throughout. In the Final, the double act notched up 18 points between them. Up front, Ciaran McColgan and Michael Robinson carved open the opposition defences and also scored freely.

An Riocht 1-4 Bredagh 2-6, Sunday September 5th
The long trip to the Kingdom proved worthwhile in the end for Bredagh's super heroes as they completed a memorable weekend with another excellent League win. The boys dominated the early stages but couldn't score and were hit on the counter-attack by three points and a lucky goal. Michael Woods, Michael Robinson, Ciaran McColgan and Lorcan Smylie all scored points for Bredagh but amazingly we were behind at the break, 1-3 to 0-4. The second-half was a bruising encounter at times with captain courageous Ryan McGarry in the wars (he was taken to hospital afterwards but is fine), but Bredagh's tremendous spirit pulled them through. A free from Joe Shields and a scrambled goal put us ahead, and when Joe Shields had a penalty saved, Ronan McKegney was quickest to follow up and shoot to the net. Deccie Magee added a point and An Riocht were fortunate to hit the woodwork twice, but Bredagh deserved the win. Man of the Match was Patrick McLaughlin.

TEAM & SCORERS: John Mongan, Patrick McLaughlin, Diarmaid Kielty, Lorcan McMullan, Caolan Schiable, Ryan McGarry (c), Ronan McKegney, Joe Shields and Deccie Magee, Lorcan Smylie, Stephen Dougal, Michael Robinson, Michael Woods, Ciaran McColgan, Oisin Smylie. Subs (all used): Nicholas McCafferty, Dario Angelone, Niall Fitzpatrick, Daniel Mulvenna, Mark Quinn, Daniel McGrenaghan, Michael Deery.

SUMMARY - This was our seventh victory in an impressive League campaign with away wins at Newry Bosco, Rostrevor, Burren and An Riocht, as well as home wins over Glenn, Clonduff and Warrenpoint. We have only lost twice but Mayobridge are unbeaten leaders and Bredagh go to them on Sunday, September 19th at 11.00am - meet at 9.30.

GOOD ADVICE - the following was on a print-out on the walls of the dressing-rooms at An Riocht: 'Practice makes permanent. Proper practice makes perfect', and 'If you always do the things you've done, you will always get the things you've got'.

Banbridge Tournament, Saturday September 11
Bredagh U-10 footballers were also unlucky to lose after extra-time at the Banbridge Tournament to eventual winners An Riocht. Still, the performance enhanced the club's reputation among the best teams around.

An Riocht 1-3 - after extra time

REPORT: There was heartbreak at the end of the semi-final battle with An Riocht but once again Bredagh had proved that they are as good as any U-10 team out there. The boys were simply sensational in their opening games and were unlucky to draw An Riocht in the semi-finals and in the game itself. We had beaten the same opposition in a League game the previous Sunday but Tournament games can be unpredictable. As it happened, we had the wind but were two points down at the break. Then with the wind we fired over three brilliant points in a gutsy comeback, but they got one back to force extra-time. They got a goal in the first three minutes and we replied with a point but it wasn't enough. An Riocht then went on to easily beat Carrickcruppin in the Final. We had already easily beaten the Armagh team in a group game, so you could say that the semi-final was actually the final. It's amazing to note that we have reached the last four of the Banbridge Tournament in each of the last three years and all three semis have gone to extra-time. We lost to Burren, then beat them to make the final last year and now we were unlucky to lose again. Still, this consistency shows that Bredagh are churning out quality teams year after year.

In the first match Bredagh blew away the host team with goals from Jack Carlin, Michael Woods and Nicholas McCafferty (2). Goalkeeper John Mongan made two tremendous saves in this game and the next one against Carrickcruppin. There were more goals in this match from Jack Carlin, Ciaran McColgan (2) and Deccie Magee. Clonduff proved to be tough opposition in the third game, but goals from Joe Shields, Aaron Maguire and Deccie Magee saw us home by four points.

Bredagh v St Endas, Sunday September 12
Two challenge games were played against St Endas on Sunday morning at Cherryvale. All 28 Bredagh players got plenty of football.

Mayobridge 1-2 Bredagh 2-6, Sunday September 19
This was one of the best performances of the season by any Bredagh team. Mayobridge Seniors won through to yet another All County Final on Saturday night and their U-10s were looking to round off their League campaign unbeaten, but the Bredagh boys played them off their own pitch! It's the second year in-a-row that we have won in Mayobridge at this level, and there's no doubting that Bredagh deserved it. From the start, the boys were lively, tenacious and prepared to work very hard for one another. However, we had trouble hitting the target early on and they got a lucky goal from their first break, so at half-time it looked like an even game. But, Bredagh dominated the second-half and ran out easy winners. It was a bit of a shock to the system for the League winners as they were presented with the cup before the cup and expected to do an 'Arsenal' and win the League unbeaten, but never underestimate this brilliant Bredagh team! They proved that they are as good as any U-10 team the club has ever had, and finishing second in the League is a great achievement. We have had eight terrific victories in an impressive League campaign with away wins at Newry Bosco, Rostrevor, Burren, An Riocht and Mayobridge, as well as home wins over Glenn, Clonduff and Warrenpoint.

REPORT: This was an awesome performance from the boys. They waltzed through the league section, winning all four games without conceding a single score. The semi-final against Bryansford proved to be a very different matter with the Newcastle boys leading 7-4 with only one minute remaining. But, this Bredagh team is well-known for it's battling qualities and Niall Kelly broke through the defence to shoot at goal. The Bryansford goalkeeper somehow deflected the ball over the bar and it looked like Bredagh were going out of the tournament at the semi-final stage, just as they had done at competitions earlier in the season at Newry, Warrenpoint and Banbridge. But not this time! Bredagh launched one final attack and when the ball broke to corner-forward Nicholas McCafferty, he lashed the ball into the bottom corner of the net to send the players and supporters into raptures. In the final, Castlewellan looked bigger and stronger, and they were out for revenge after losing in the 2003 Final to Bredagh. We had a wind advantage in the opening half but only managed one point from Deccie Magee. Again, this was to underestimate this spirited group of boys as they fought for every ball and added points from Deccie and Stevie Dougal. Castlewellan needed a goal but it never looked likely with the defence led by Diarmaid 'The Rock' Kielty and Ryan 'The Mountain' McGarry repelling attack after attack. Behind them, John Mongan in goals was beaten in only one of six games in the Tournament.

SUMMARY: Deccie Magee deserved the Man of the Tournament award and was also our top scorer with 3-5, though this was a truly great team performance from all 32 Bredagh players and a fitting end to a great season.

SQUAD OF 32 PLAYERS: John Mongan, Daniel Mulvenna, Diarmaid Kielty, Caolan Schiable, Michael Woods, Michael Robinson, Ryan McGarry, Ronan McKegney, Joe Shields, Deccie Magee, Patrick McLaughlin, Mark McLaughlin, Conor Kelly, Niall Kelly, Ella Durkan, James Durkan, Conor Costello, Aaron Maguire, Lorcan Smylie, Oisin Smylie, Nicholas McCafferty, Luke McKenna, Anto McManus, Gerard Whyte, Peter Rice, Ruairi Sheridan, Stephen Dougal, Niall Fitzpatrick, Eoin Fleming, Lorcan McMullan, Ciaran McColgan, Jack Carlin, Mark Quinn.

DEVELOPMENT TEAM
We also had a full second team taking part in the Tournament and getting plenty of football. They lost to Dromara by a single point, then Ruairi Sheridan scored a goal against Bryansford, Conor Costello and Niall Kelly starred against Castlewellan, and finally the boys claimed a great draw with Loughinisland. Gerard Whyte was one to improve rapidly as the games went by, while the likes of Luke McKenna, James Durkan and Peter Rice profited greatly from the experience. Many of the Development team played in the earlier rounds for the A team as they had a number of late-comers, so they played an important part in the defence of the title. Their performance also augurs well for next year with many of them still underage in 2005.

St Pauls Holywood, November 28th

Bredagh finished 2004 in appropriate fashion by winning both competitions at the St Pauls tournament in Hollywood. The P6/P7 team, pictured above, which was basically the superb U-10s from this year, won all of their four matches against the home teams, Tullylish and St Endas, while the P4/P5 team also won their group.

P6/P7 Results
Bredagh 1-5 St Paul's A 0-0
Bredagh 2-1 St Enda's 1-3
Bredagh 5-0 St Paul's B 1-0
Bredagh 3-2 Tullylish 0-0

In the first game, Lorcan Smylie got the goal and the points came from John Mongan (2), Deccie Magee, Joe Shields and Michael Robinson. However, it was a tighter contest than the scoreline suggests and Diarmaid Kielty's stout defending was decisive. In the second game, Lorcan Smylie goaled twice and John Mongan got our only point in a tough match against bigger opposition. Again, it needed courageous defending from Ryan McGarry and Ronan McKegney as Bredagh held out for a one-point victory. The third win was relatively easy, starting with a great goal lashed to the net by Mark Quinn, followed by a long-range effort from Ryan McGarry and further goals from Ruairi Cumiskey and Joe Shields. Dario Angelone controlled midfield and Ruairi Sheridan and Caolan Schiable created havoc in attack. In the last match, Bredagh had strong performances from midfield generals Shields and Magee, along with Lorcan McMullan and Stevie Dougal in the forwards. Joe Shields scored 1-1, Michael Robinson and John Mongan both got goals and Mark Quinn had the last score of a brilliant year for the U-10s with a point. Overall, it was a great performance once again by the U-10s and a fitting end to 2004. Roll on 2005!
