Championship Reports

Cherryvale was buzzing today as the second week of outdoor training got underway. U8s,U10s and U12s fine-tuned their skills with great enthusiasm on this lovely sunny afternoon.

U12s with coaches Seamus McKillop,Rosie Rocks and Nancy McGarry

Last Day, December 12th

It may have been the second week in December but there was a large turn-out for the very last day of football action in Bredagh in 2004. Around forty U-10 and U-12s joined up for an end-of-season game with a difference. Following their trip to Dublin in October for the International Rules match the boys were keen to try out the Australian game, so a small fun competition allowed the lads to try something different, with the squad split into three teams. It was a great success with everyone enjoying themselves in some highly entertaining games. On many occasions the older and stronger players were brought to the ground by the younger yet fearless lads! All of the boys were presented with a small treat as they had finished for the Christmas break after terrific commitment throughout the year. It is planned to get together again early in the New Year to play a couple of challenge matches against St Gall's and St Brigid's around the end of January. Full details will be on the website in January. The Coaches and players are thanked for their admirable spirit and enthusiasm from the start of 2004 to the end!

Declan Magee was presented with an award by Eugene Irwin for being the player who played most above his normal ability.

St Galls 4-6 Bredagh 3-5, Sunday December 6
Bredagh fielded an U-11 side who contributed greatly to a fine exhibition of clean and competitive football before a large crowd. Referee Donal Durkan rarely had to blow his whistle as the game flowed from end to end with the players on both sides making light of the winter conditions. Bredagh visibly tired in the closing stages after their first experience of playing on a full-size pitch. There will be a return match in the New Year.

Bredagh 4-3 St Brigids 3-8, Sunday November 21
The Bredagh U-11s (next year's U-12s) had a large squad of 26 players for this opportunity for the younger squad members who are moving up from the U10s to play alongside their older and more 'experienced' colleagues. The format was three 20-minute periods and everyone got a chance to shine. In the starting line-up, the full-back positions were filled by three older players - Ciaran McFarland, Ben Scullion and Eoghan Curran. Six of the younger players made their debut at this level in the first period - there were very solid displays at half-back by the debutants Ryan McGarry and Diarmaid Kielty, supported in the middle of defence by the older Daniel Robinson. In the middle of the park, John Mongan provided excellent support to the hard-working Tim Durkan, who scored 0-1. In the forwards, Stephen Dougal, Michael Robinson and Lorcan McMullan showed how they have easily made the transition to this next age group. In the spine of the team the older lads had some excellent interchanges of play against the physically stronger Malone Road side. Kealan Devlin scored two goals from full-forward with other goals were scored by Daniel Nolan and Niall Irwin. In the second and third periods the visitors took some fine scores as the remainder of the younger members of the home squad made their debut. St Brigids ran out eventual winners by two points at the end of a very entertaining game watched by a large crowd. The boys look forward to a return match early in the New Year as part of their preparations for the new season.

Squad: Ciaran Fitzpatrick and Kieran McKavanagh (both shared goal-keeping duties), Ciaran McFarland, Ben Scullion, Eoghan Curran, Ryan McGarry, Daniel Robinson, Diarmaid Kielty, Tim Durkan, John Mongan, Niall Irwin, Daniel Nolan, Stephen Dougal, Michael Robinson, Kaelan Devlin, Lorcan McMullan, Michael Doran, Conor McEvoy, Ronan McKegney, Peter Rice, Michael Woods, Lorcan Smilie, Gerard White, Michael Deery, Dario Angelone, Aaron Maguire, Daniel Steele.

Bredagh 5-7 St Galls 2-6, Sunday October 3
Bredagh's big squad of 27 players had too much for St Galls in Cherryvale. It was an opportunity for the management team to try some of the lads in new playing positions. Connor McManus moved from his normal goalkeeping position to corner-forward from where he scored an excellent goal. Ciaran Kelly moved from full-back to full-forward and he also drilled a low shot to the net. Ciaran McFarland made the same move in the second-half with the same outcome. Damhan Farmer (captain) and Niall Irwin moved from their normal forward positions to play in the back line. New squad member Connor O’Reilly marked his debut by scoring a well-taken point.

Fun Football, Sunday September 19
‘Fun football for all‘ - every Bredagh U-12 footballer was invited to Sunday's 7-a-side tournament on Sunday morning at Cherryvale. The
four teams played in 15 minute matches with forwards and backs changing positions at half time. This gave the large squad an opportunity to try out their skills in new roles. An award was presented at the end of the tournament to the player who had played to the highest level above his normal ability. On this occasion the award was presented to Eoghan Curran for his excellent work in defence.

Bredagh beat St Brigids, Sunday September 12
The U-12 squad of 24 players travelled across to the YMCA grounds in Stranmillis to play a challenge match against St Brigids. This was the first occasion since the beginning of the summer that we have had a full strength squad. In the first half, the visiting Bredagh side were too strong for the host side who had not played competitively over the summer period. As the game progressed the large squad all got a run out with some changes in normal positions for a number of players. The most significant of these was the movement of Daniel O’Rourke to the unfamiliar goalkeeper position where he made some excellent saves and fine clearances to the safety of the wings thus earning him the Man of the Match award. Although the Bredagh boys were victorious in the end this was not about the scoreline – it was about all of the members of the large squad getting a chance to play football. It is hoped to play a return match after a few weeks when the St Brigid’s lads have had a few competitive games under their belt.

Back to School, Sunday September 5

Bredagh managers organised a ‘Back 2 School’ tournament at Cherryvale. The matches were played on a ‘10-minute a side’ basis with forwards and backs swapping positions in the second half of each game. This allowed some of the lads who don’t normally get a chance to play ‘up front’ to try out their shooting boots.

There were some excellent performances by the backs in this new role, particularly Conor McManus (pictured above), Kevin Dornan (pictured below),

Conor McEvoy, Ben Scullion, Aaron McPeake and Daniel Steele. Also, Daniel O’Rourke proved to be an excellent choice in goals with some fine saves. In their defensive role, Kieran McKavanagh, Daniel Robinson and Ciaran Kelly had very good games. Young James Durkan (U-10) stood in to balance up the numbers and made some fine interceptions. After the three games each of the teams had a total of three points. It was decided to then split the squad into two teams to decide the overall winner. The final was a close encounter with Donal Durkan’s team coming away with eventual victory over the team managed by Eugene Irwin, but only by the narrowest of margins!
Awards were presented to those from the development squad who made outstanding contributions - Kevin Dornan, Ben Scullion, Daniel Steele and Conor McManus.

Bredagh 8-12 Carryduff 3-1, Sunday, August 29
The team concluded it's East Down U-12 League Section A campaign with a convincing win over Carryduff in the local derby match. The boys were keen to put a disappointing midweek championship semi-final exit behind them by finishing the season on a high note, and they duly started this match with much more purpose and endeavour than their opponents. Indeed, the management were pleased to note that all of the forwards, midfield and centre half back scored with some excellent interchanges of play as Jamie Cleary and Conor McCloskey controlled midfield and delivered quality ball as the game flowed at a fast pace. Tim Durkan at centre half forward picked up a lot of break ball with some fine play on the wings by Daniel Nolan and Ciaran Fitzparick. At full forward Kealan Devlin proved to be an excellent target man with Niall Browne and Niall Irwin providing solid support play from the corner forward positions. Ryan McElkerney in goals was well protected by the full back line in which Daniel Robinson played a very strong game in the centre with Ben Scullion and Eoghan Curran providing cover in the corner back positions. The half back line kept the Carryduff attacks to a minimum with James Mulligan (MVP) particularly showing fine anticipation. Ben McCaughey and Emmett Costello made numerous runs into the forward line with the latter scoring 1-1. Overall this was an excellent display of fast-moving football from both sides and provided good entertainment for the fairly large crowd in this local derby. In fairness to the opposition, the score doesn’t accurately reflect the tight nature of the contest. In fact, it was only in the latter stages of the game that the home side began to put a safe distance between the teams.

TEAM & SCORERS: Ryan McElkerney (Captain), Eoghan Curran, Daniel Robinson, Ben Scullion, James Mulligan, Emmett Costello 1-1, Ben McCaughey, Jamie Cleary 0-1, Conor McCloskey 2-1, Daniel Nolan 0-2, Tim Durkan 0-1, Ciaran Fitzpatrick 2-2, Niall Irwin 1-0, Kealan Devlin 1-2, Niall Browne 1-1. Subs: (all used) Jack Hollywood 0-1, Daniel Steele, Damhan Farmer, Michael Doran, Kevin Dornan, Martin Maguire.

Bryansford 4-10 Bredagh 5-10, Sunday August 15
Bredagh got back on track with a brilliant League win at Bryansford. Midfielder Jamie Cleary was Man of the Match. Bredagh have stretched their winning run over Bryansford at U-12 level to six matches and three years. Playing with the wind in the first half we got off to a good start with two early scores from Kealan Devlin.

Within minutes Ciaran Fitzpatrick and Conor McCloskey (pictured above) added two excellent goals. However the home side caused a lot of problems for the Bredagh backs, scoring a total of 2-6 in the first half. Bredagh went in at half time with a two-point advantage and knowing that they had a difficult task against the wind in the second half. The back line was reshuffled with Daniel Robinson moving to steady the full back line. James Mulligan moved to centre half back where he had a very solid display, picking up a lot of break ball in the second period. Ben Horner in goals had a busy second half, making some excellent saves and finding his players cleverly with his clearances. Ben Scullion and Ciaran Kelly in the corner back positions absorbed a lot of pressure and made some fine challenges. The half back line of James Mulligan, Michael McGarry and Ben McCaughey soaked up a lot of pressure with Michael McGarry making an excellent block at a crucial time to stop a very dangerous attack. As the half progressed the large travelling crowd witnessed a very exciting finish with each side exchanging scores. As the pressure mounted Jamie Cleary stepped up a gear at midfield and had his best match of the season with some breathtaking high fielding and penetrating runs into forward positions. Conor McCloskey took some fine scores, especially given that he was marking their best player. The half forward line was led by Ciaran Fitzpatrick in the centre, who also carved out some hard fought scores. He was supported on the wings by Ben Walker and Brian Cunningham (Captain), both of whom put in a lot of work, particularly in the second half. At full forward Kealan Devlin had an excellent game, showing that his sharpness is now returning after his American trip. It was also great to see Niall Browne make a workmanlike return to corner forward after his layoff due to illness. Jack Hollywood had a lot of good interchanges of play with the other forwards and scored a vital point in the last few minutes. Bredagh were relieved at the final whistle to finish three points up, to the loud applause of all the supporters.

TEAM & SCORERS: Ben Horner, Ciaran Kelly, James Mulligan, Daniel Robinson, Ben Scullion, Ben McCaughey, James Mulligan, Michael McGarry, Jamie Cleary 0-2, Conor McCloskey 2-1, Brian Cunningham, Ciaran Fitzpatrick 2-3, Ben Walker, Niall Browne, Kealan Devlin 1-3, Jack Hollywood 0-1. Subs: Niall Irwin for Niall Browne, Martin Maguire for Ben McCaughey, Daniel Steele, Michael Doran , Kevin Dornan, Ciaran McFarland.

Bredagh 5-4 Kilcoo 6-8, Sunday August 8
The Bredagh boys faced a stiff breeze in the first half against a highly talented Kilcoo. This did not however deter the home side as they put together their best first half display this year. They played as a tightly knit unit and made Kilcoo work hard for every score, limiting them to only five points in the whole of the first period. In contrast the Bredagh boys took some excellent scores with five of the six forwards getting on the scoresheet : Daniel Nolan (0-1), Jack Hollywood (1-0) , Ciaran Fitzpatrick(Captain - 1-0), Kealan Devlin (0-1) and Niall Irwin (1-0). Tim Durkan chased and fought for every ball as he has done all season. As the boys went in 6 points up at half time and with the breeze in their favour for the second half they felt confident of a victory. Just like the Armagh team less than 24 hours earlier, Kilcoo knew they were in a game. Were we about to witness another big upset this weekend! Kilcoo had other ideas and are experts at fighting for every ball right to the final whistle. The Kilcoo boys played some excellent fast flowing football in the second half scoring a total of 6 goals and 3 points. The tally from the Bredagh boys was limited to a goal from Ciaran Fitzpatrick with Conor McCloskey adding a further goal and two points. The large home crowd applauded the boys at the end of a highly entertaining game. Afterwards, as the management team reflected on the game we reminded ourselves that four of the backs in this team (Daniel Robinson, Michael McGarry, James Mulligan and Ciaran Kelly) have only been playing gaelic football at a competitive level for less than six months and have made remarkable progress in this short period. Conor McManus, who has just made the transition from the U10’s, made some remarkable saves and was well supported by Ben Scullion at corner back. He made some excellent clearances to the half back line commanded by the other Ben (McCaughey) who worked tirelessly throughout the match. At midfield Conor McCloskey and Jamie Cleary had very solid displays against very strong opponents. The boys now have a league match against Bryansford before facing Kilcoo again this time in the Championship semi-final on week ending 21-22 August. The date will be confirmed when the details of the Down minor match have been announced.

Daniel Robinson, Michael McGarry, Ben Scullion, Ben McCaughey, James Mulligan, Ciaran Kelly, Jamie Cleary, Conor McCloskey, Daniel Nolan, Tim Durkan, Ciaran Fitzpatrick, Jack Hollywood, Kealen Devlin, Niall Irwin. Subs: Ryan McElkerney, Aaron McPeake, Brian Cunningham, Kieran McKavanagh, Ben Walker, Eoghan Curran.

Downpatrick 7-11 Bredagh 4-10, Thursday August 5
Bredagh faced a different Downpatrick side from the one they defeated in the Championship as they had a number of key players back from holiday and they made a big difference. The visiting Belfast side struggled the first-half, particularly in the full back line, so changes were made with Daniel Robinson moving out from his position as goalkeeper to boost the defence. Kaelan Devlin, who had just flown home from America, took over in goals and done a superb job for the remainder of the match. Unfortunately, the boys never settled as they tried to shake off the ‘holiday blues’ and went in at half-time 13 points down. However the strength of character in this team was demonstrated in the first 15 minutes of the second-half as the sides amazingly drew level with the city boys playing some excellent football. There were some fine interchanges of play at midfield and half-forward with all of the scores coming from these positions - Conor McCloskey 1-4, Jamie Cleary 2-0, Tim Durkan 2-3 and Ciaran Fitzpatrick 0-3. They were supported by a superb display from the half-back line of Michael McGarry, captain James Mulligan and Ben McCaughey. Niall Irwin and Aaron McPeake came on to boost the full-forward line, but the massive effort required for the remarkable recovery took it's toll, the boys tired and they conceded further scores to a very organised and physically superior Downpatrick side.

SUMMARY: It was a nail-biting match for the visiting supporters with the final score not really reflecting the gallant and hard-working second-half display by the Bredagh boys. After the match the management team and the boys reflected on the very competitive yet highly enjoyable nature of the group stages. This effectively ends any chance of reaching the play-off stages of the League but the boys now have the Championship semi-final against Kilcoo to look forward to on the week ending 21-22 August.

TEAM: Daniel Robinson, Ben Scullion, Kieran Kelly, Eoghan Curran, James Mulligan, Michael McGarry, Ben McCaughey, Jamie Cleary, Conor McCloskey, Daniel Nolan, Tim Durkan, Brian Cunningham, Jack Hollywood, Ciaran Fitzpatrick, Ryan McElkerney. Subs: Kaelan Devlin, Niall Irwin, Kieran McKavanagh, Aaron McPeake, Ciaran McFarland, Peter Leggett, Anthony Bergin, Ben Walker, Daniel Steele, Daniel O’Rourke.

Bredagh 2-9 Castlewellan 5-9, Sunday July 25
This was the first defeat for Bredagh U-12s in nearly two years but no-one could blame the players on show as they put in a great effort against a big and very useful Castlewellan side. Several U-10s were called up because of the absence of many players on holidays and they emerged witj great credit. July is never a good month for Bredagh, as shown by this defeat and other defeats in important games for our U-14 boys and the U-16 girls. It also leaves the U-12s with a mountain to climb as this was the first game in the regraded League format and with the top two qualifying for the Final, Bredagh can't afford to lose another game.

Stand-in goalkeeper Daniel Robinson performed heroics in the first-half by making five brilliant saves, including one from a penalty. He was simply outstanding! Still, Castlewellan were on top and Bredagh were lucky enough to be level at the break on 2-4 apiece. Two early goals from Conor McCloskey had given us a useful lead (from two Ryan McElkerney passes) while our points were scored by Daniel Nolan (0-2) and Jamie Cleary (0-2). Castlewellan scored the first point of the second-half to lead but the excellent Tim Durkan replied with two points, one of his right foot and another of his left! Ben McCaughey came up from defence to add another point but then the visitors took control. They scored 3-4 to 0-2 in the last twenty minutes.

SPECIAL MENTION has to go to the U-10s making the step-up and doing themselves proud. Diarmuid Kielty gave his bigger marker a torrid time, Michael McGarry excelled at centre-half and Joe Shields was unlucky not to grab a few scores in the full-forward line.

TEAM & SCORERS: Daniel Robinson, Ryan McGarry, Ben Scullion, Conor McEvoy, Ben McCaughey 0-1, Michael McGarry, Diarmuid Kielty, Jamie Cleary 0-2, Tim Durkan 0-3, Daniel Nolan 0-3, Conor McCloskey 2-0, Brian Cunningham, Jie Shields, Ryan McElkerney, Niall Irwin. Subs: Daniel Steele, Eoghan Curran, Peter Leggett, Michael Robinson.

Bredagh 7-14 Downpatrick 5-4, Saturday June 26
A large home crowd saw the Bredagh boys face a very stiff breeze in the first half and they had to defend for long periods against a skilful Downpatrick side. There were however some fine interchanges of forward play in the half with goals from Ryan McElkerney (1-0) and Kealan Devlin (2-2). Although the boys went in five points down at half time, the management were confident that the team could turn the game , around with wind advantage in the second half. , The Bredagh boys duly delivered on that promise by playing excellent football in the second period. Jamie Cleary replaced Ben Walker in goals, the full-back line of Eoghan Curran, Danny Robinson and Ciaran Kelly played as a unit, at half-back Michael McGarry in the centre was ably assisted by Brian Cunningham and James Mulligan on the wings. At midfield Conor McCloskey (2-3) and Timothy Durkan (1-3) worked very hard throughout the game and both took some excellent scores. Centre-half-forward Ciaran Fitzpatrick played probably his best game this year, scoring a total of 1-3. Daniel Nolan, playing on the wing, added a further two points. All of the subs were used in the second half, with Jack Hollywood at corner forward scoring a fine point.

The semi-final of the Championship is currently scheduled for August 22nd. In the meantime there will be a break from League action until Sunday July 25th when the group stages will begin.

TEAM: Ben Walker, Danny Robinson, Ciaran Kelly, Eoghan Curran, James Mulligan, Michael McGarry, Brian Cunningham, Tim Durkan, Conor McCloskey, Daniel Nolan, Ciaran Fitzpatrick, Kealan Devlin, Niall Browne, Ryan McElkerney, Niall Irwin. Subs: Martin Maguire, Jamie Cleary, Jack Hollywood , Ben Scullion, Kieran McKavanagh, Aaron McPeake.

Loughinisland 0-2 Bredagh 6-17, Sunday June 20

Bredagh continued their unbeaten run with an excellent performance. Right from the start there were some fine interchanges of play by all of the forwards with Ryan 'Bomber Liston' McElkerney at full-forward scoring 2-2. At midfield, there were hard-working displays from Tim Durkan (0-2) and Emmett Costello (2-2). Ciaran Fitzpatrick scored five points and both Niall Irwin (0-2) and Niall Browne (0-1) scored from their corner-forward positions. The back line settled in as the game progressed and confined the opposition to only two points. The half-back line were particularly impressive with an excellent defensive display by James Mulligan. Nineteen players were used in total with all of the substitutes coming on in the second-half. Ben Horner came in at midfield and worked hard, providing some excellent passes to the reshaped full-forward line of Daniel Steele, Jack Hollywood (0-1) and Daniel O’Rourke.

TEAM: Conor McManus, Ben McCaughey, Ciaran Kelly, Daniel Robinson, James Mulligan, Michael McGarry, Brian Cunningham, Tim Durkan, Emmett Costello, Daniel Nolan, Ciaran Fitzpatrick, Kealan Devlin, Niall Browne, Ryan McElkerney, Niall Irwin. Subs: Danny Steele, Daniel O’Rourke, Jack Hollywood, Ben Horner.

St Johns 1-3 Bredagh 5-11, Sunday June 6
Right from the throw-in, St Johns looked like they were going to provide Bredagh with a stiff test with five minutes of early pressure. But, some excellent defending and great blocks from Ciaran Kelly, Ben McCaughey and the outstanding Danny Robinson prevented St Johns from taking advantage of this spell of dominance. Jamie Cleary then settled Bredagh down with a number of well-taken points and thereafter Bredagh dominated the game with McCloskey, Cleary and the Bredagh half-back line of Durkan, McKavanagh and McGarry providing a steady flow of quality ball into a forward line which had the measure of the St Johns defence throughout the game. Fitzpatrick, Devlin, McCloskey, Cleary and McElkerney all contributed scores in the half to leave Bredagh winning comfortably at half time. Bredagh introduced all of their substitutes in the second half with Walker, Connolly and Hollywood scoring. Jack Hollywood’s three well-taken points being some of the highlights of a strong second half performance. However, it was a good team performance all round with Michael McGarry, who was marking one of the opposition’s best players, and Danny Robinson both deserving special mention in the defence. Bredagh’s midfield performed well throughout and Ciaran Fitzpatrick, finishing with 3-4, was the pick of the forward line.

TEAM: Team: Conor McManus, Ben McCaughey, Ciaran Kelly, Danny Robinson, Michael McGarry, Tim Durkan, Ciaran McKavanagh, Jamie Cleary, Conor McCloskey, Brian Cunningham, Ciaran Fitzpatrick, Niall Browne, Niall Irwin, Kealan Devlin, Ryan McElkerney. Subs: Ben Walker, Damien Connolly, Eoghan Curran, Ciaran McFarland, Ben Scullion, Jack Hollywood – All played.

Bredagh v Bredagh & Glenarm, May 20
Bredagh U-12 boys played two very useful matches on Thursday, May 20, against Bredagh U-13s and then against Glenarm. The management's aim is to provide plenty of football for the big panel and this was achieved with a total of 38 squad members playing in these challenge matches. The first game was a hard-fought contest with little in it at half-time. The U-13's stepped up the pace in the second-half and U-12 goalkeeper Conor McManus had to make some excellent saves. Overall, it was an excellent opportunity for the younger lads to play in a competitive match and it was encouraging to see some very strong and skilful displays from both sets of players. In the end Bredagh Youth won by a clear margin! The second game saw four new faces take the field - Adam Beattie, Damien Connelly (1-0), Peter Leggett (1-0) and Kevin Dornan all making their debuts and did really well. There was also a very strong display in defence from Ben Walker who took the Man of the Match award. Eight substitutions were made and Glenarm won by a single point.

Bredagh 9-9 Dromara 0-3, Monday May 17
Bredagh U-12’s had an easy win against a weak Dromara side. It was however an opportunity to develop some of the younger players with nine subs being used in total from an early stage in the match. Among the substitutions there were notable performances from Damhan Farmer, Eoghan Curran, Daniel O’Rourke, Aaron McPeake, Conor McEvoy, Ryan McElkerney and James Mulligan.

SQUAD: Conor McManus, Ben McCaughey, Michael McGarry, Jamie Cleary, Tim Durkan, Emmett Costello, Conor McCloskey, Daniel Nolan, Ciaran Fitzpatrick, Ben Horner, Niall Browne, Kealan Devlin, Niall Irwin, Brian Cunningham, James Mulligan, Ryan McElkerney, Aaron McPeake, Kieran McKavanagh, Jack Hollywood, Eoghan Curran, Conor McEvoy, Daniel O’Rourke, Martin Maguire, Damhan Farmer.

Bredagh 4-6 St Johns (Belfast) 6-4, Sunday May 9
The U-12’s faced a stiff challenge when they played St Johns who are as yet unbeaten in the Antrim league this season. Bredagh were playing without four of their key players - Conor McCloskey, Jamie Cleary, Emmett Csotello and Ciaran Kelly. This was therefore an opportunity for some of the less experienced players to stake their claim for a first team place. A number of the newcomers grabbed the opportunity, particularly those in the new-look full-back line of Kieran McKavanagh, Danny Robinson and Ben Scullion. There was also a solid hard-working display from Michael Moynagh playing at midfield with Kealan Devlin. There was a reshuffle in the half-back line where Brian Cunningham was introduced with Tim Durkan and Michael McGarry - all three working tirelessly throughout the match. All of the forwards faced a stiff challenge from a very strong St Johns backline. The half forward line of Daniel Nolan, Ciaran Fitzpatrick and Ryan McElkerney found it hard to penetrate the defence particularly in the first period of the game which was played in three 20-minute slots. The full-forward line of Niall Irwin, Ben Horner and Niall Browne have not had a more difficult challenge this season yet. The format of the game allowed many positional changes and substitutions to be made over the three periods. There were fine performances from the three substitutes in forward positions - James Mulligan, Jack Hollywood and Ben Walker) and some excellent blocking and tackling from Ben McCaughey and Eoghan Curran, who were brought into the backline. Overall this was an excellent gutsy performance against very strong opposition. The losing margin doesn’t reflect the hard work from the whole team over the three periods. More matches at this level will be required before the team face the ‘big boys’ as the season progresses. There are two matches next weekend with a challenge match against Glenarm at 1.15pm on Sunday and a league match against Dromara on Monday night.

St Pauls Hollywood 2-8 Bredagh 3-4, Thursday May 8
This was an opportunity for those players who have not had much experience of football at U-12 level to strengthen their skills and experience. All of the 18 players grabbed the opportunity with some excellent displays, particularly from the newcomers with Jude Moreland at corner back gaining the Man of the Match award. He was well supported in the full back line by Paul Maguire-Wilson and Daniel Russell. At half back there was a very solid display from Ciaran McKavanagh with some fine passes to the forward line. He was supported on either side by Anthony Bergin and Conor McEvoy. At midfield Niall Irwin and Ben Walker (0-1) put in very strong displays against the two best players on the St Paul’s team. There were some fine interchanges of play on the half forward line between Jack Hollywood (0-1), James Mulligan and Daniel O’Rourke. At full forward Damhan Farmer played a ‘Bomber Liston’ role in scoring 1-1. On either side he was very well supported by Daniel Steele (0-1) and Michael Doran. James Mulligan was replaced by Ryan McElkerney who came on to score a fine goal before he put on the goalkeeper jersey to allow Conor McManus to play outfield. Conor grabbed the opportunity by scoring a goal himself. James Day and Kevin Burns made their debut in the second half.
The managers at the end of the game commented that this was the hardest fought and closest contest at U-12 level since the challenge game against Carryduff earlier in the year. The narrow defeat by one point does not take away from the magnificent effort by all 18 players. It is planned to have a return match at Cherryvale over the next month.

Bredagh 12-12 Liatroim 1-2, Monday May 3
Bredagh continued their unbeaten league run with an excellent display of football to beat Liatroim at home by a convincing margin. Bredagh got off to a slow start and were a goal down within the first few minutes. This was the wake-up call that was needed and they responded by notching up some excellent scores as the first-half progressed. There were some fine interchanges of play by all of the forwards as six of them got their name on the scoresheet. Kaaelan Devlin and Daniel Nolan both scored four goals, Ciaran Fitzpatrick added another two and both Niall Irwin and Niall Browne (Captain for the day) scored one each. At midfield there were solid dislays by Conor McCloskey and Jamie Cleary. The back-line settled in as the game progressed and confined the opposition to only two more points during the rest of the game. The half-back line were particularly impressive as Liatroim had a number of skilful forwards. Nineteen players were used in total with the remainder of the squad playing in a challenge match against St Pauls Hollywood this Thursday night. The management team noted at the end of the game that it was very encouraging to see the hard-working overall TEAM effort in this game as we are very much aware that there will be tougher opposition ahead.

Bredagh enjoyed a 6-9 to 4-4 victory over Carryduff in pre-season on Sunday March 14th.
