Parents v Coaches, October 9th
Bredagh ran a trip for Girls footballers to Dublin after a 'spectacular' fund-raising effort last weekend when a Mums & Dads match v Coaches was well-contested... The Trip was a great success with two buses required to take all of the party. There was a tour of Croke Park and three games against a local team, which Bredgha won.

REPORT - Bredagh Girls Football Fundraiser, Saturday October 9th - Parents (Doran's Dream Team) 2-11 Coaches (McAlliney's All Stars) 3-4
Bredagh's golden oldies 'entertained' a large crowd at sunny Cherryvale to raise a magnificent sum of more than thirteen hundred pounds to fund the forthcoming Girls Day Out to Croke Park. A well-contested game was full of the skills coached every week to Bredagh youngsters, even if they were executed with a little less speed than in days gone by.. From evergreen Monaghan goalkeeper Tommy McArdle, who was deceptively quick, to Club Chairman Nicky McCafferty, who was deceptively slow, the veterans put on a great show. The Coaches raced into a five-point half-time lead with Brendan Downey and John Gilmore causing havoc in the Parent's defence. Goalkeeper Raymond Quinn deserved better protection after his tremendous fund-raising efforts, but really the problems were starting further out the field. Cillian Short and Brendan O'Connell were controlling the midfield sector and the double act of Amy Cunningham and Grainne McAllister were making runs through the Parent's rearguard. In truth, the advantage at the break could have been more but for referee Edel Teague ruling out a goal in a hotly-disputed square-ball decision. Eventually, the Parents started to come into the game and a couple of points from Nicky McCafferty and Tommy reduced the deficit. A great block by Tricia McGurk and a good save from Tommy McArdle kept the Coaches ahead at half-time by 2-3 to 0-4. During the interval Paul Doran made a number of tactical switches and a quick goal by Chairman McCafferty set up a storming second-half. Ciara's McGuire's dad came into the fray and scored a fine point for the Coaches, while Lisa Kelly gave the weary Parents a much-needed injection of pace. Defenders Paul Mulhern, Paul McCabe and Danny McGurk kept the Coaches' forwards quiet and Martin Hannity showed great composure in coming out of defence. As a result, the Parents came forward in droves with Paul Smylie, Jerome Quinn, Tommy, Paul Doran and Nicky McCafferty all stretching the defence and taking some fine points and another goal. The Coaches looked out of it when a superb goal from one of Bredagh's best-ever servants, John Gilmore at full-forward, gave them a lifeline but it was too little too late.
The total amount raised was a superb £1317.45. The top fund-raisers amongst the girls were Nicky Pauley and Sarah Nugent. Special thanks go to Raymond Quinn who did Trojan work in persuading Ormeau Road residents to dip their hands into their pockets. The prize for the closest score went to Brian McCaughey. Thanks to all the participants and fund-raisers and sponsors.
And there's more...
Bredagh 4-1 Bryansford 3-13, July 20th Brave Bredagh gave hotly-fancied Bryansford a real fright by taking a nine-point lead in this Championship semi-final at rain-soaked Downpatrick. It was Bredagh's first time in the semis and they have never beaten Bryansford in girls football, but at half-time the Newcastle girls were really in a game. Playing with a gale force wind on their backs, Bredagh scored goals through Claire Byrne, Polly Moane, Meadbh Whyte and Moya McGurk to lead by 4-1 to 0-4 at the interval. The second-half was a different story as the Belfast side tired and they obviously missed some players who are on holidays. Still, Aine Hannity gave a commanding performance to try and stem the tide, and overall it was a superb achievement to reach this stage of the competition and Bredagh will be back. NOTE: Bryansford beat Castlewellan in the final by 2-11 to 1-3.
Kathryn is an All Star!

Bredagh 1-6 Bright 2-1, Wednesday June 30 A five-star performance from Moya McGurk was one of the highlights of this exciting and historic victory for Bredagh U-16 girls in reaching their first-ever county championship semi-final. Moya scored 1-5 of our total, including a brilliant and matchwinning goal in the last ten minutes when Bright had taken the lead. However, praise must be heaped on the entire team, subs and management for this terrific achievement. From goalkeeper Anna McAlinney (who saved a first-half penalty) to subsitute Kate Hollywood (who had a second-half goal disallowed for square ball), they were all heroines. Bredagh and Bright were meeting for the third time this season, and with one win each there was never going to be much in it. In the early stages, Bright scored a goal and could easily have had another one or two as they had the penalty and a shot coming off the post. But the Bredagh girls dug deep as they are so superb at doing, and points from Moya and Clare Byrne left the half-time score 1-1 to 0-3 for Bright. Three points from Moya in the second-half hauled Bredagh into the lead, only for a 14-metre free to be struck to the roof of our net, leaving Bright a point ahead entering the closing stages. That's when Moya's drive found the corner of the net to send the players and large support wild! Kathryn Quinn won a penalty a minute later but the Bright goalkeeper made a fine save from Amy Cunningham and the tension carried on right to the final whistle. This group has developed and improved all year, with some outstanding players through all of the games, such as Lisa Kelly, Amy and Hannah Murray, while others have improved dramatically, such as Grainne Hughes and Aisling McCloskey. All in all, they make a formidable team!
Bredagh 2-6 Burren 3-2, Saturday June 19
Little Cassie Moane (pictured above) saved the day for Bredagh U-16s girls in an exciting Championship clash with Burren at Cherryvale. With her team trailing by a point in the closing minutes, Cassie collected a crossfield pass and cooly drove the ball into the corner of the Burren net to the delight of her team-mates and the large home support. What they and Cassie didn't know was that just before she became the Bredagh heroine the management had planned to replace her with a substitute! Thankfully, the switch was delayed and the rest is history. Bredagh held on for a famous victory over one of the big guns from South Down. Burren did stage a last-ditch fightback and laid siege to the Bredagh goal, striking the bar and scoring a point, but it wasn't enough. To be fair, Bredagh were marginally the better team over the hour, showing great skill and tenacity in the slippery conditions. At half-time, Bredagh led by 1-2 to 1-1 but the story of the opening period was one of domination by the home side. The highlight was a marvellous move all the way from goalkeeper to point-scorer Amy Cunningham, involving superb passing and team-work by Hannah Murray, Polly Moane, Kathryn Quinn and Amy. Moya McGurk added another point and Kathryn Quinn grabbed a goal when the Burren keeper dropped a high ball, but a Clare Byrne shot struck a post and right on half-time the visitors smashed a great goal to the net. Bredagh had it all to do again in the second-half and despite starting with a Kathryn Quinn point, they conceded two quick goals that looked like ending the U-16 girls entire season. A few decisions went against us and all of a sudden the difference was four points. But this is a gutsy bunch of girls who keep battling to the finish. Two inspirational points from Amy Cunningham and a Moya McGurk free narrowed the gap to just one point and then came Cassie's winning goal. Apart from those mentioned above, Lisa Kelly, Grainne Hughes and Clare Byrne deserve special mention for their efforts throughout the contest.
NOTE 1: The next game in the U-16 Championship will be on Wednesday week, June 30th in a Quarter-final against Bright. These are the Quarter-final fixtures: Aughlisnafin v Bryansford; Bredagh v Bright; Castlewellan/Clonduff v Shamrocks; Saval v Rostrevor.
Downpatrick 4-3 Bredagh 0-6, Wednesday June 9 Bredagh U-16 girls experienced the highs and lows of sport in just four days with the joy of winning a play-off thriller against Bright on Sunday dampened by the dejection of losing to Downpatrick on Wednesday in the final play-off for a place in the county semi-finals. On the night Bredagh had no luck with at least five goal chances. A few early goals saw the team fall behind and despite three points in-a-row Downpatrick broke upfield for a very fortunate goal. At half-time it was 3-1 to 0-4 and another goal on the restart killed the contest. Still, the girls put in a tremendous effort and were terribly unlucky to see two goal efforts go narrowly wide and two more strike woodwork. One goal might have kickstarted a rousing finish but it just refused to come. A disappointing end then but it's been a terrific season overall and there's still loads of potential for the future, and there's the Championship still to come. SCORERS: Kathryn Quinn 0-2, Polly Moane, Clare Byrne, Moya McGurk, Maebh Whyte all 0-1 each.
Bredagh 4-4 Bright 3-3, Sunday June 6 What a performance by the city girls! They reversed an earlier League defeat at Bright with a spirited and skilful victory in a very exciting contest. Both sides held the lead for periods and it was level at half-time, but Bredagh finished the stronger with a great goal from Cassie Moane to win by four points and set up a final play-off against Downpatrick. Cassie scored two goals in all, as did Kathryn Quinn, while Orla Day moved into the forwards at the last minute owing to an injury to Kate Hollywood and played superbly, scoring two points. Clare Byrne scored three points, Amy Cunningham hit the post from a penalty won by Cassie with just five minutes to go and the drama continued right to the end with Bright having a goal disallowed for over-carrying in the last minute. Bredagh had heroes, sorry heroines (!), all over the pitch. In defence, Cathy Short won everything in the first-half and Jamie Willigan made some crucial interceptions in the second-half.
Bredagh 2-7 Downpatrick 1-7, Wednesday May 12 Another terrific performance by the city girls saw them overcome very tough opposition and make certain of a play-off for the All County semi-finals. Downpatrick had only lost once before this game, so Bredagh simply had to win to stay in contention. The large crowd got behind the Bredagh girls as they showed great heart and skill to edge the contest by a goal in a grandstand finish. Downpatrick's star midfielder, who also lines out for the Down Senior ladies team, smashed a drive off the crossbar and threatened to destroy Bredagh's hopes, but the home side tackled bravely and hunted in packs to close down their opponents. There were many stars on the night, like Hannah Murray, Clare Byrne, Moya McGurk, Jamie Willigan and Amy Cunningham, though special mention must go to Grainne Hughes after she gave her best performance yet in a Bredagh shirt. The first-half was a low-scoring affair with Bredagh ahead at the break by 1-5 to 0-3. Clare Byrne accounted for 1-2 while Amy Cunningham, Moya McGurk and Kathryn Quinn all added excellent points. Further scores from Cunningham and Kate Hollywood had Bredagh in control early in the second-half, and when Moya McGurk crashed a superb drive to the top of the net, the contest looked to be over - Bredagh 2-7 Downpatrick 1-4. But, Bredagh did not score again and the visitors struck with three points and were very unlucky not to add at least one goal. Several goalmouth scrambles saw the ball go everywhere but in the home net!
TEAM & SCORERS: Anna McAllinney, Louise Fitzpatrick, Lisa Kelly (c), Cathy Short, Grainne Hughes, Hannah Murray, Jamie Willigan, Amy Cunningham 0-2, Katie Campbell, Polly Moane, Moya McGurk 1-1, Clare Byrne 1-2, Maebh White, Kathryn Quinn 0-1, Kate Hollywood 0-1. Sub: Cassie Moane for Maebh White. Subs not used: Nicole O'Connor, Aine Hannity, Sarah Nugent, Aisling McCloskey, Orla Day, Nicci Pauley, Enya McGurk.
Bright 3-9 Bredagh 3-2, April 25 Bredagh U-16 Girls put up a great fight but went down to Bright at their pitch in the League, a result which means that the race for second place is still up for grabs. Kathryn Quinn grabbed another hat-trick, her fourth of the season, but it wasn't enough as an understrength team couldn't cope with the pace of several very good Bright players.
Bredagh v Burren, June 19 7.00
Aughlisnafin 0-0 Bredagh 4-9, Saturday April 17 Four wins in five games for the U-16 girls with a great performance at a wet and cold St Johns, Drumaroad, not helped by the referee arriving an hour late! The highlights were another well-executed Amy Cunningham penalty, two great points from half-forward Polly Moane and two goals from Clare Byrne. It was 2-4 to no score at the break.
SCORERS: Clare Byrne 2-2, Amy Cunningham 1-1, Kathryn Quinn 1-1, Polly Moane 0-2, Meabh Whyte 0-1, Katie Campbell 0-1, Nicci Pauley 0-1.
Bredagh 2-4 Bryansford 3-5 - Sunday, April 4th
PICTURES COURTESY OF THE SOUTH BELFAST NEWS

Bredagh led for most of this game and were very unlucky not to record their first win over the best team in girls football in recent years. One goalbound effort crashed off a post, other chances just wouldn't go in and they got a couple of soft goals, but the important thing was the performance and that augurs well for the future as we can still qualify for the county semi-finals.

Back row, left to right: Louise Fitzpatrick, Jamie Willigan, Kathryn Quinn, Amy Cunningham, Aine Hannity, Moya McGurk, Polly Moane, Katie Campbell, Kate Hollywood, Sinead Norwood, Anna McAlliney. Front row: Lisa Kelly, Clare Byrne, Sarah Nugent, Nicky Pauley, Meadbh Whyte, Hannah Murray, Cassie Moane, Orla Day.
REPORT: Bryansford scored the first point against the wind but Bredagh responded well with Kate Hollywood giving a good pass to Cassie Moane to fire to the net. This was followed up by points from Amy Cunningham and Clare Byrne. Bryansford responded with a point but Hannah Murray and Amy Cunningham worked their socks off in midfield to keep Bredagh pressing forward. With Lisa Kelly marshalling the defence brilliantly, Bryansford could not get anything going. The Bredagh forward line continued to interchange well with Moya McGurk doing great work linking the play at centre half-forward. An excellent pass from Kathryn Quinn put the speedy Kate Hollywood through for a goal. Bryansford responded but Anna McAllinney made a good save. Aine Hannity gave another great pass to Clare Byrne, who made another blistering run and fired over the bar. The Bredagh advantage was reduced when confusion in the Bredagh defence allowed Bryansford in for a goal, leaving Bredagh with a slender advantage at half-time, 2-3 to 1-2.
In the second-half Bredagh played against the breeze but dominated the first ten minutes. Good work from Orla Day and Kathryn Quinn enabled Clare Byrne to score another free but Bredagh failed to make the most of this possession. A good goal from Bryansford narrowed the advantage and despite the best efforts of Jamie Willigan, Aine Hannity and Orla Day in the half-back line, Bryansford started to dominate the game. Bryansford scored two points in quick succession to level the match and Bredagh were up against it, facing a strong breeze. Louise Fitzpatrick and Sinead Norwood battled hard but Bredagh were struggling to get any possession. Bryansford finally went ahead after Bredagh conceded a soft goal and this was compounded when Bredagh gifted Bryansford a point from the resulting kick-out. Bredagh fought back well and managed to work the ball into the forward line after good play from Polly Moane. A couple of Bredagh goal chances went a-begging but Bryansford made it home with a four-point win.
TEAM & SCORERS: Anna McAlliney, Sinead Norwood, Lisa Kelly (c), Louise Fitzpatrick, Jamie Willigan, Aine Hannity, Orla Day, Hannah Murray, Amy Cunningham, Clare Byrne, Moya McGurk, Polly Moane, Kate Hollywood, Kathryn Quinn, Cassie Moane, Grainne Hughes, Aisling McCloskey, Cathy Short, Meadbh Whyte.
Bredagh 7-4 Ardglass 2-7 - Sunday, March 21st The Bredagh girls defied the poor weather conditions at the Dub to thrill their big support and make it a hat-trick of League wins. Full-forward Kathryn Quinn (pictured below) also completed a unique hat-trick of her own as she scored three goals for the third match in-a-row, which must be some kind of record!

The visitors had started brightly with three quick points, but the Bredagh defence battled hard against the breeze and made it hard for the Ardglass forwards to score with great tackling from Hannah Murray, Orla Day and Jamie Willigan. A breakaway move saw midfielder Katie Campbell put Clare Byrne through for a point, though Ardglass then scored a goal from close range.
Hannah Murray on the ball, watched by Sinead Norwood.
This Bredagh team has great character and refused to be beaten. Amy Cunningham and Katie Campbell won good possession and the team started to pass the ball well. Their efforts were rewarded when interplay between Clare Byrne and Nicky Pauley put Kathryn Quinn through for a well-taken goal. Clare Byrne followed up with a point from a free.
In the closing stages of the half, Ardglass scored another goal to lead by four points at the break. Bredagh got their tactics right in the second-half by playing first-time ball into the full-forwards who made the most of that possession by scoring five goals in quick sucession. The first was another clinical finish from Kathryn Quinn, then the diminutive Cassie Moane scored two in five minutes after good passes from Kate Hollywood and Kathryn Quinn, and finally Kate Hollywood got in on the act with two great goals of her own.
A point from Moya McGurk (pictured above, ready to tackle) gave Bredagh a matchwinning cushion and goalkeeper Aine Hannity made a brilliant save to tip a goal-bound shot over the bar. Forwards Meadbh Whyte and Sarah Nugent tracked back to keep Ardglass at bay and then a free to the top of the net saw hard-working Kathryn Quinn complete her hat-trick.
Katie Campbell worked hard at midfield.
A heavy downpour arrived in the last few minutes but it didn't matter to the Bredagh girls. Captain Lisa Kelly was a tower of strength at full-back and Louise Fitzpatrick and Sinead Norwood kept battling to the final whistle, when the girls celebrated in the driving rain!
Bredagh leading the way!
Loughinisland 0-0 Bredagh 3-9 - Sunday, March 14th Full-forward Kathryn Quinn started the scoring with a well-taken goal while terrific work-rate and persistence from Meadbh Whyte and Cassie Moane, who covered every blade of grass on the pitch, had Bredagh in control. Nicky Pauley finished a great move with an excellent score and Amy Cunningham and Hannah Murray worked tirelessly in midfield. Orla Day had another great game and another goal from Kathryn Quinn and points from Meadbh Whyte, Cassie Moane and Clare Byrne saw Bredagh ahead at the break by 2-6 to no score. The half-back line of Jamie Willigan, Aine Hannity and Kate Hollywood cut out most of the danger in the second-half and more scores from Hannah Murray, Kathryn Quinn (to complete two hat-tricks in two games), and a great save by Anna McAlliney rounded off a perfect performance.
Carryduff 2-4 Bredagh 5-5 - Sunday, March 7th The girls quickly shook off the rustiness of the Winter break to score a great goal when a good interchange between half-forwards Moya McGurk and Polly Moane led to Kathryn Quinn rocketing the ball to the net giving the Carryduff keeper no chance. Points followed from Clare Byrne, Katie Campbell and Polly Moane. The Bredagh full-back line of Sinead Norwood, Lisa Kelly and Louise Fitzpatrick kept Carryduff at bay and although the gap closed to two points after the break, the half-back line of Jamie Willigan, Hannah Murray and the impressive Orla Day began to get the better of their opponents. The midfield partnership of Katie Campbell and Amy Cunningham showed great leadership and work-rate, with Amy scoring a superb penalty - right in the top corner! Two more Kathryn Quinn goals after great passes from Cassie Moane and Kate Hollywood, and another goal from Katie Campbell saw Bredagh home.
