Trip to Glenarm/Cushendun

'If a half-useless fella from Fiji can take up hurling at the age of eleven and do alright in the game, then ye lads can do the same!'

Inspirational words of encouragement from All Ireland winning hurler Seán Óg O'hAilpín on a visit to the Glens. The 2004 GPA Hurler of the Year was addressing a day trip of U-10s from Bredagh, where the game has only recently taken root.

'Ye may not have that much tradition of hurling and camogie, but look at me - I was born in Fiji, lived in Australia and then came to Ireland! Keep playing and practising and you can be as good as you want to be'.

'Your county is Down' continued Seán Óg, 'and I remember seeing Down play Cork in the 1992 All Ireland semi-final. They should have won that day and if ye have the belief then you can bridge the gap in the future'.

Seán Óg was a guest of the Glenravel and Cushendall clubs over the weekend, and was hosted by Terence Sambo McNaughton, a close friend of the Cork star, who was impressed by his enthusiasm and modesty. 'You couldn't pick a better hero or role model. He was fantastic with the kids and had them hanging on his every word'.

Seán Óg told the Bredagh boys and girls that he doesn't drink or smoke and in answer to a question from the floor, he revealed that he drinks twelve pints of water a day. The boys and girls were relieved to hear that they didn't have to consume the same amount and that it shouldn't be taken all at once!

The Bredagh U-10s earlier played challenge games in Glenarm (football) and Cushendun (hurling - see picture above) before having dinner at the Tea Rooms courtesy of Aidan McPeake and meeting Séan Óg in the Caman bar in Cushendall.

'It was a brilliant day', said Ryan McGarry, 'I met my favourite player and I'm going to take his advice not to drink or smoke because it can ruin you'. Lorcan McMullan added that he wanted to emulate Séan Óg, while Dario Angelone said he made him thought about getting 'more serious about the game'.

The trip was free to the U-10s because they (and their coaches and parents!) deserved it after a memorable year when they went to tournaments and matches all over the country. Everyone on the party had a dinner in Cushendun after the second game, courtesy of Aidan McPeake.

Aidan (pictured on the right) also sponsored the smart-looking Bredagh U-10 hurling and football jerseys worn by the teams this season. Eamon Mulvenna, Daire McPeake and Mark Quinn are also in the picture.

Bredagh 6-1 Carryduff 1-0, Saturday October 16

Bredagh finished off their season with a convincing victory over Carryduff. While not playing their best hurling in the first-half they managed to turn round three goals up with the opener scrambled over the line by Daniel Mulvenna followed by goals from Aaron Maguire and Joe Shields, but it was a solid defensive performance that kept a clean sheet with keeper Niall Fitzpatrick making several point-blank saves, together with tidy clearances from Dario Angelone and Gerard Whyte. The second half saw Carryduff up their performance and score a well-taken goal, but this got bredagh moving with a super display of aggressive and controlled hurling, competing for every ball and winning most, none more so than Man of the Match Lorcan McMullan who covered every blade of grass and dominated midfield. The match was sealed by goals from an Aaron Maguire sizzler from an acute angle and another from Daniel Mulvenna who finished off with a great point for Score of the Game. All 27 players got an opportunity to display their skills and there were great performances from Ronan McKegney, Conor Costello, Daire McPeake and Paula McKay in attack with Sean McGourty, Dairmaid Kielty, Sean Blaney and Daniel Devlin giving nothing away in defence.

Bredagh 6-1 Carryduff 5-0, Saturday September 25
This was a first-class hurling game with Bredagh in control with first half goals from Ronan McKegney and a scorcher from star forward Daniel Mulvenna. The second half started as a repeat of the first with Joe Shields adding a further two goals and Aidan Donaghy hitting a long range effort to the top of the net to leave Bredagh leading by five goals. But inside five minutes the game was turned on it's head with Bredagh going to sleep and Carryduff scoring four goals in a row to make for an exciting finish. Ronan McKegney added 1-1 to stretch Bredagh's lead and a late goal by Carryduff wasn't enough to deny Bredagh. Overall this was a great team performance with Paula McKay pulling off some fantastic saves while under severe pressure in the second half. Enda McGonagle had a great game at centre half along with Michael Deery and Sean McGourty and midfielders Joe Shields and Lorcan McMullan played well. In the attack, Aidan Donaghy, Ronan McKegney, Niamh O'Connor and MoM Daniel Mulvenna were the pick.

U-8s Win Ballycran T'ment - Saturday August 28th
Bredagh U-8 hurlers made a little bit of history by winning the Ballycran Tournament. They defeated the host side and then had an easier win over Portaferry. Coach Eamon Mulvenna described it as a 'magnificent display by Bredagh's young heroes. They came out of the Ards with full points, medals and full bellies through the generosity and hospitality of hosts Ballycran'. Although only able to rustle up 13 players, those that were available put on a great show, especially Ronan 'DD' Quinn in goals and Daire McPeake at centre half. Conor Costello and Daniel Mulvenna dominated midfield in both games while up front newcomers Tom Doherty and Niall Smyth performed to a high standard given it was their first competitive game. Rossa failed to show and rumour has it that they turned at Kircubbin when news filtered thru of Bredagh's victory over the hosts! Overall, it was a great day's hurling by Bredagh's youth and special thanks to Ballycran for their generous hospitality.

There was an exciting finish to this tough, competitive challenge game at Cherryvale. With Bredagh trailing by a goal late in the second half, the team managed to scramble a kicked goal by Daniel Mulvenna just five minutes from the end and when it looked like finishing in a draw, up popped Deccie Magee with a great solo and strike to notch the final point and win the match.

Bredagh v Ballela, May 5
Ballela turned up with only 10 men and we had 27 so we decided to play 3 x 20 minute matches with Bredagh more or less completely changing their team each time. It meant everyone got a game and it was more a case of a good night's training.

Carryduff 2-0 Bredagh 9-0, Sunday April 25
Bredagh's U-10 hurlers remain undefeated this year to date after an emphatic win over their near neighbours Carryduff. Bredagh appeared to be suffering from their football exploits the day before as they started very sluggishly and not surprisingly went a goal down early on but they managed an equaliser before the end of the first period. In the second period Bredagh started to get going and went ahead and fired on all cylinders showing great fight and commitment to overrun Carryduff in the final quarter. Michael Cassidy had one of his best games yet at centre half giving an excellent display of ground hurling and long clearances up to the forward line. Diarmaid Kielty was also one of the unsung heroes as he man-marked C'duff's best player and kept him scoreless throughout. In defence bredagh were well served by James Durkan, Shauna Leitch, Dario Angelone, Michael Deery, Tomas Flanigan, Deccie Magee and Niall Fitzpatrick. Midfielder Joseph Shields and forwards Lorcan McMullan, Aaron Maguire, Robert Graham, Ronan McKegney, Ruairi Sheridan and Ciaran McColgan all performed well in the second half.

TEAM & SCORERS: Michael Cassidy, Dario Angelone, Seamus McCloskey 1-0, Diarmaid Kielty 1-0, James Durkan, Niall Fitzpatrick, Robert Graham, Aaron Maguire, Mark Quinn 1-0, Shauna Leitch, Lorcan McMullan 1-0, Ruairi Sheridan 2-0, Joseph Shields 1-0, Michael Deery, Tomas Flanigan, Ronan McKegney 2-0, Sean McGuigan, Deccie Magee, Ciaran McColgan.

BREDAGH’S HEROES EMERGE UNBEATEN FROM THE ARDS PENINSULA

Bredagh’s Under 10 hurlers travelled to the Ballygalget Tournament to take on the hurling giants of the Ards Peninsula on Saturday 11 April and came away unbeaten notching up 2 wins and a draw.

Match 1 - Portaferry 3-0 Bredagh 3-0

The match format was 10 minutes each way with ground hurling in the first half and open hurling in the second. Bredagh started very strongly and went ahead with a great goal by Sean McGuigan. After Portaferry equalised Bredagh launched another attack and Aaron Maguire forced the ball home to put them in front again. Portaferry levelled the game just before half time. The second half saw great end to end hurling with Joseph Shields and Enda McGonagle dominating in midfield the resulting pressure led to another Sean McGuigan goal. Portaferry pushed hard for the equaliser and Bredagh put up a stout defence with Michael Derry and James Durkan at the forefront. Portaferry were awarded a dubious free in the final seconds and this was dispatched to the Bredagh net to leave the game all square. The Bredagh heroes trooped off disappointed with the draw but determined to record a win in their next game.

Brothers in arms - Seamus and Conor McCloskey.

Match 2: Ballygalget 0-0 Bredagh 1-0

Our second match against our host Ballygalget was the most exciting of all three games. The two sides were very evenly matched and both teams put on a great show of ground hurling in the first half. Niall Fitzpatrick, James Durkan and Michael Cassidy were Bredagh’s stars in the defence while up front Seamus McCloskey and Mark Quinn were more than able for their Ballygalget markers. Bredagh’s goal came late in the first half after an excellent interchange with Shauna Leitch and Ella Durkan putting Sean McGuigan clear on goal and the big full forward made no mistake from an acute angle.
The second half was played at a ferocious tempo with Ballygalget pressing for an equaliser. It was an opportunity for Bredagh’s defence to stand up and be counted…cometh the hour cometh the man … in the shape of Bredagh goalkeeper Daire McPeake who made brilliant save after brilliant save to keep a clean sheet and secure a great Bredagh victory. Daire was ably assisted in defence by Ronan Smyth, Sean McGourty and Michael Deery.
“They broke my stick but not my spirit!”

Match 3: Ballycran 0-0 Bredagh 9-0

The final match turned out to be an exhibition of top class hurling by the Bredagh team. They dominated the match from the first whistle with great goals from debutants Sean McGourty and Daniel Devlin with the best goal of the half coming from full back Aaron Maguire who broke through a scrum of players to smash the sliothar to the Ballygalget net and followed it with a victory jig back to his defensive position.
The story of the second half was all about hat trick hero Daniel Mulvenna who thumped 3 goals past the Ballycran keeper inside the space of 5 minutes to kill off any thoughts of a Ballycran comeback. Bredagh piled on further misery for Ballycran with 2 super goals from Ronan McKegney followed by a Joseph Shields special to the top right hand corner from 20 yards.

The following were presented with goal medals at the closing ceremony: Sean McGuigan, Ella Durkan, Michael Cassidy, Daniel Mulvenna, Michael Deery, James Durkan, Joseph Shields, Mark Quinn, Aaron Maguire, Ronan McKegney, Enda McGonagle, Ronan Smyth, Daire McPeake, Shauna Leitch, Seamus McCloskey, Sean McGourty, Niall Fitzpatrick, Daniel Devlin.

A special thanks to our host Ballygalget who put on a wonderful tournament, picked a lovely sunny day and provided an excellent buffet for all those in attendance.
