Championship Reports

Bredagh 8-5 Carryduff 1-3, October 9
Bredagh team pictured before the match.

Blitz at Bredagh, October 16
This was the moment Bredagh hurlers made history by beating an Ards team for the first time in a competitive official Co Down fixture. Sean Irwin crashed the sliothar to the net in the second-half. Bredagh also drew with Ballygalget, lost narrowly to Ballycran, and drew with Carryduff. The Bredagh team pictured directly after the victory over Portaferry.

Each of the competing teams had words of praise for Bredagh for the successful hosting of Saturday's competition. Despite the damp conditions it was a great afternoon of hurling and a great way to bring the season to a close. Bredagh were one of five teams competing, the others being the three Ards clubs and neighbours Carryduff.

MATCH ONE - Bredagh 2-3 Portaferry 1-3
Scorers: Cormac Hughes 1-1, Sean Irwin 1-0, Conor McCloskey 0-1, Conall Doherty 0-1.

Our first outing was against Portaferry and we recorded a fantastic and historic victory, the first against an Ards team at this level. A three points half-time deficit was turned around in the second half as the visitors were held scoreless. A goal from Sean Irwin added to Cormac Hughes’ first-half strike to make for a three-point win.

MATCH TWO - Bredagh 1-0 Ballygalget 1-0
Scorer: Sean Irwin 1-0

Bredagh upped the ante even more and were unlucky not to beat the hotly fancied Ards boys who were the eventual winners of the competition. This was a hard-fought battle with both sides scoreless at half-time. Shortly after the break Sean Irwin blasted to the Ballygalget net and with Bredagh having the better of the exchanges a shock looked on. However a long speculative lob deceived Matthew Mullan in the Bredagh goals in the dying seconds to give Ballygalget a share of the points. This was the only point dropped by Ballygalget over the afternoon.

MATCH THREE - Bredagh 0-2 Ballycran 1-3
Scorers: Cormac Hughes 0-1, Ruairi Johnston 0-1

Ballycran proved to be tough and physical opponents. Bredagh were clearly tiring after their earlier exploits and found themselves trailing by three points at half-time. Early in the second half they conceded a goal and were really up against it but to their credit the last quarter was all Bredagh and Cormac Hughes and Ruairi Johnston scored points, but the clock beat them as Ballycran held on to win.

MATCH FOUR - Bredagh 0-1 Carryduff 0-1
Scorer: Cormac Hughes 0-1

This was a nerve-wrecking affair as Bredagh tired and Carryduff saw an opportunity for a first victory over us. Despite having 90 per cent of the play in the first-half Bredagh could put no scores on the board and the game was scoreless at half-time. In the second Carryduff were awarded a penalty which was despatched over the bar. With the time ticking away Cormac Hughes kept his nerve to send over a 30-metre free for the equaliser. The game ended in an historic draw for Carryduff who have made tremendous advances over the course of the season.

TABLE:
Ballygalget 7pts
Ballycran 6pts
Bredagh 4pts
Portaferry 2pts
Carryduff 1pt

SUMMARY - Over the four games there were outstanding performances from Paddy Woods, Michael Mullan, Cormac Hughes, Conall Doherty and Sean Irwin but they were all heroes as Bredagh took a very credible 3rd place overall.

OTHER PICTURES FROM THE BLITZ:

Bredagh 1-3 Ballygalget 5-12, Wednesday July 28
Bredagh played host to the County Féile Champions and although well-beaten on the scoreboard the local boys put in a credible performance and are benefiting from regular competition against top-class opposition in the A League. There was little between the sides in the first half and Ballygalget had to work hard for every score. Cormac Hughes sent over two tremendous long distance frees and Ruairi Johnston blasted to the top corner of the Ballygalget from 20 metres to leave the half time score 3-6 to 1-2. The visitors turned on the style in the second half although the Bredagh defence, in which Paddy Woods, Emmett Costello and Matthew McAfee excelled, did well to stem the tide. Michael Mullan had a great hour in nets and Cormac Hughes, who got Bredagh’s only second half score, a pointed free, and Ruairi Johnston gave as good as they got around the middle. Up front Donal McKegney, Conor McCloskey and young Tim Durkan, on his U-14 debut, impressed. Bredagh were missing a few due to holidays and injury, and with the likes of Niall Nolan, Sean Irwin and Cormac White back and with a commitment to training, they will get a lot closer to the Ardsmen.

TEAM & SCORERS: Michael Mullan, Daniel Higgins, Paddy Woods, Pearse Leitch, Michael Magee, Matthew Mullan, Cormac Hughes 0-3, Ruairi Johnston 1-0, Conall Doherty, Peter Graham, Donal Hughes, Donal McKegney, Conor McCloskey, Michael Guerin. Subs: Tim Durkan and Declan O’Hara.

Ballycran 6-11 Bredagh 0-0, Friday June 25
Bredagh travelled to Ballycran with a squad heavily depleted due to holidays, school trips and a tennis tournament. Despite missing 10 players we were able to field a team of 14, all of whom gave a good account of themselves against awesome opposition. Ballycran were at full strength and gave an exhibition of score-taking from open play. By half-time they had chalked up a scoreline of 2-8 to 0-0. Michael Mullan was excellent in the Bredagh goals, otherwise it could have been more. Bredagh put up a spirited fight in the second-half with great performances from Matthew Mullan, Niall Nolan, Donal McKegney, Cormac Hughes and Conor McCloskey in particular. Ballycran never eased off. Indeed their star player Donal Ennis, who was representing the County in the All Ireland skills competition in Mullingar, returned home at half-time and although the game was over as a contest, he was introduced in the second-half. The step up in class from the East Down league to the A Division is clearly a massive one. Bredagh would have been closer had they had a full panel but a lot of work is still required. This group of players are up for the challenge.

TEAM: Michael Mullan, Daniel Higgins, Matthew McAfee, Matthew Mullan, Donal McKegney, Niall Nolan, Michael Magee, Cormac Hughes, Peter Graham, Donal Hughes, Sean Irwin, Declan O'Hara, Conor McCloskey, Kevin Duffin.

Carryduff 4-2 Bredagh 6-5
With a break in League duties this was a useful challenge which left Bredagh in no doubt that Carryduff continue to improve at U-14 level. Although Bredagh had 9 points to spare at the end their near neighbours matched them in many departments and twice led the game in the first-half. The Bredagh defence in the early stages had difficulties with a fast-moving Carryduff attack but when Paddy Woods, Diddles and Matthew McAfee got into their stride this unit performed much better. Cormac Hughes and Cormac White shaded the midfield battle and up front Conor McCloskey, Donal Hughes and Peter Graham caught the eye. Niall Wright came on as a second-half sub for his debut and was very impressive at corner-back while Emmett Costello, also introduced in the second period, added an extra dimension to the attack. This was a wake-up call for Bredagh. In a League match at Cherryvale earlier in the season Carryduff only managed 1 score in a one-sided victory for the home side. They have improved greatly and now Bredagh know they must take their game to the next level as they are about to embark on their A League/Championship campaign.

TEAM & SCORERS: Sean Irwin, Daniel Higgins, Paddy Woods, Matthew Mullan, Diddles Magee, Matthew McAfee, Michael Mullan, Cormac Hughes (1-1), Cormac White (1-0), Conall Doherty (0-1), Peter Graham (0-1), Donal Hughes (2-0), Ben Horner, Conor McCloskey (2-1) and Michael Guerin(0-1). Subs; Emmett Costello, Niall Wright, Ruairi Johnston, Pearse Leitch, and Kevin Duffin.

Bredagh 11-8 Castlewellan 1-2, Friday May 28
Runners-up last year Bredagh took the East Down U-14 Hurling League title in some style with a comprehensive victory over Castlewellan. Bredagh took time to settle but a Donal McKegney goal on five minutes, followed immediately by a Conall Doherty point settled the home team and the forwards began to exploit the wide open spaces of Cherryvale’s middle pitch. Up front the deadly duo of the Donals, McKegney and Hughes, led the Castlewellan defence a merry dance and by half-time the home team had established a match winning score of 6-5 to 0-0. After the break Bredagh took the foot off the pedal but still registered some inspirational scores. Castlewellan did manage 1-2 during this period but it only served to shorten the long trek back to the foothills of the Mournes. There were some great performances from the boys in maroon and white. In defence Paddy Woods, Michael Magee, Niall Nolan and Cormac White were rock solid. At midfield Cormac Hughes and Peter Graham were well on top and up front the Donals and Conall Doherty ran riot. Bredagh now take a place in the 'A' section of the All County League/Championship and will compete against the three Ards teams and the winners of South Down. Right up there where they belong!

TEAM & SCORERS: Michael Mullan, Michael Magee, Paddy Woods, Matthew Mullan, Niall Nolan, Cormac White 0-1, Daniel Higgins, Cormac Hughes 1-1, Peter Graham, Conall Doherty 1-3, Sean Irwin 1-1, Ben Horner, Michael Guerin 1-0, Donal Hughes 3-2, Donal McKegney 3-0, Pearse Leitch 1-0, Stevie McSherry.

Ballycran 5-2 Bredagh 0-2, Saturday May 22
The U14 hurlers took a trip to the Ards on Saturday afternnon to take on Ballycran in a friendly match. Bredagh were short a number of regulars but this was still a very useful outing ahead of Friday night's League match with Castlewellan where a win will secure the title. Ballycran were at full strength but there were some great performances from the likes of Cormac Hughes, Conall Doherty, Michael Mullan, Diddles Magee and Cormac White, and despite the big win Ballycran this was never an easy match for the home teeam. Decky O'Hara had a good game on his return to the small ball game and showed that he certainly has a future in the sport.

TEAM: Mark Devlin, Matthew Mullan, Paddy Woods, Daniel Higgins, Michael Magee, Cormac White, Michael Mullan, Cormac Hughes 0-2, Donal Hughes, Conall Doherty, Sean Irwin, Donal McKegney, Declan O'Hara, Stevie McSherry, Killian Hughes.

Co Down Féile, May 8
Bredagh's U-14 hurlers were within touching distance of the All Ireland when they led Liatroim in the B Final in Portaferry in the Co Down Féile, but two late scrambled goals denied us. The final score was 4-0 to 2-2, and earlier we had beaten Shamrocks by 2-2 to no score and Castlewellan by 8-3 to 0-0. Bad luck lads, but remember where we have come from. It's only our second year attending the Féile and to reach the B Final and come so close is a great achievement.

FULL REPORT: There was heartbreak for Bredagh’s heroic U14 hurlers when they came within a whisker of winning the Co. Down Feile Division 2 title. With two minutes remaining in the final against holders Liatriom, Bredagh were two points ahead and looked to have booked their place in the National Feile. However a late surge by the Liatriom boys produced two goals to give them a rather flattering four-point victory. It was a goal each at half time with Donal Hughes getting the Bredagh score. In the second period Bredagh went behind early on but some expert free-taking by Cormac Hughes, which included a goal from 21 yards, saw them edge into the lead only to be denied by those late strikes. There were tears on the final whistle but this Bredagh team can be mighty proud of their performances which will have enhanced their reputation as a major force in under-age hurling in Down.

Bredagh Scorers v Liatroim: Cormac Hughes 1-2 Donal Hughes 1-0.

Bredagh Scorers v Shamrocks: Sean Irwin 1-0 Donal Hughes 1-0 Ruairi Johnston 0-1 Conall Doherty 0-1.

Bredagh Scorers v Castlewellan: Sean Irwin 2-1 Donal Hughes 2-0 Donal McKegney 1-0 Ben Horner 1-0 Ruairi Johnston 1-0 Conall Doherty 0-1 Cormac Hughes 0-1.

All 19 players who made the trip to Portaferry played their part in a great festival of hurling and were awarded runners up medals by Feile Chairman Bernard McGrattan.

The Panel: Michael Mullan, Daniel Higgins, Paddy Woods, Michael ‘Diddles’ Magee, Niall Nolan, Matthew McAfee, Cormac White, Cormac Hughes, Ruairi Johnston, Donal McKegney, Peter Graham, Donal Hughes, Conall Doherty, Sean Irwin, Michael Guerin, Matthew Mullan, Pearse Leitch, Ben Horner, Steven McSherry.

Feile Skills Competition: On Friday evening Cormac Hughes and Paddy Woods travelled to Portaferry where Cormac represented Bredagh in the Skills Competition and Paddy in the Poc Fada. Both gave great displays against top opposition with both finishing 4th in their respective competitions. The Skills was won by Donal Ennis of Ballycran and the Poc Fada by Conor Mageeann of Portaferry.

Ulster Féile
Bredagh U-14 hurlers competed in the Ulster Hurling Féile for the very first time and did the club proud by winning two games out of three in their group. Many thanks to the Woods family for supplying the excellent club banner and flag which were carried in the parade in Ballycastle.

Bredagh 9-3 Liatroim 4-2, Friday April 16
After beating Bredagh twice in the same age group last season Liatriom must have travelled to Cherryvale in confident mood for this crunch U-14 league tie. They left however a well-beaten team. Playing against a slight breeze in the first half Bredagh took the lead on five minutes with a well taken goal by Donal Hughes and from then to the end they were always looked in command. The half back line of Niall Nolan, Matthew McAfee and Cormac White were in fine form. Cormac Hughes gave a MoM performance at midfield and up front Conal Doherty showed some lovely skills as he notched up 2-2. The Donals, Hughes (2-0) and McKegney (1-0) linked up well on the right and Peter Graham (1-1) was always dangerous on the edge of the square. Bredagh led 4-0 to Liatriom's 1-0 at half time and really turned the screw in the second with some delightful scores. This was a brilliant performance by the Belfast boys. Liatriom were a good team but they simply could make no headway against the tenacious tackling of this very focussed team who now have their sights set on this weekend's Ulster Féile in Ballycastle and the Co. Down Feile in Portaferry the following week.

TEAM & SCORERS: Matthew Mullan, Michael Mullan, Paddy Woods, Michael Magee, Niall Nolan, Matthew McAfee, Cormac White, Cormac Hughes (1-0), Ruairi Johnston, Donal McKegney (1-0), Sean Irwin (1-0), Conal Doherty (2-2), Donal Hughes (2-0), Peter Graham (1-1) and Ben Horner. Subs: Michael Guerin (1-0), Pearse Leitch, Daniel Higgins.

Bredagh 7-6 Carryduff 1-0 - Friday April 16
Bredagh got their League campaign off too a winning start with an impressive 24-point win over near neighbours Carryduff in a fairly one sided affair at Cherryvale. In the first period Bredagh were camped in the Carryduff half and with Cormac Hughes and Niall Nolan totally controlling midfield the forwards revelled in a plentiful supply of possession. Cormac opened the flood gates with a well taken goal from distance. Conor McCloskey (1-2) and Donal McKegney (2-0) gave the Carryduff defence a torrid time and with further scores from Sean Irwin (1-0), Matthew McAfee (0-1) and Emmett Costello (0-1) the country boys looked dead and buried as the half time scoreline read Bredagh(5-4) Carryduff (0-0). To their credit Carryduff came out battling in the second period and the sizeable crowd were treated to a much closer encounter. They made a number of dangerous raids into the Bredagh defence and while for the most part Paddy Woods, Conall Doherty and Co. held firm they did steal in for a well taken goal. But Donal Hughes who had been inactive as goalkeeper in the first half moved to corner forward and contributed 1-2 to the Bredagh cause and Sean Irwin hammered home his second to give the home side a comfortable victory. Next week will provide a sterner test with an away visit to Liatriom.
TEAM: Donal Hughes (1-2), Daniel Higgins, Paddy Woods, Pearse Leitch, Conall Doherty, Matthew McAfee (0-1), Michael Magee, Cormac Hughes (1-0), Niall Nolan, Donal McKegney (2-0), Sean Irwin (2-0), Peter Graham, Emmett Costello (0-1), Ben Horner, Conor McCloskey (1-2).
