Championship Reports
Newry Shamrocks 3-9 Bredagh 1-8, Monday September 6 Bredagh lost their final League game but the team put up a great effort to push the home side all the way. Bredagh only trailed by 1 point at half time although they did have wind advantage. The exchanges were hard and tight during this period as the teams exchanged scores. Cormac Hughes and Owen Costello were in excellent form in the full forward line with Doolers and Chris McConville picking off points further out. Half time Newry 1-6 Bredagh 1-5. The second half was a tough affair as both sides battled for supremacy. Bredagh’s cause was not helped when Paddy Byrne was sidelined for a second bookable offence. Hughes and Costello hit further points and Michael Murphy hit a cracker from 60 metres. Niall Colton, Conor McConvey and Murphy gave great defensive cover to keeper Michael Mullan who performed heroics in the Bredagh goals. He did however concede 2 late goals as the light faded and Shamrocks took the 2 points.

Bredagh 2-4 Ballela 7-3, Monday August 23 Bredagh put up a brave show against an unbeaten and highly motivated Ballela side. Cormac White struck with an early goal to put Bredagh ahead and shock the large visiting support, while Paul Doole added a free. Ballela hit back with three goals despite resolute defending by Matthew McAfee, Paddy Woods, Niall Colton, John McKenna and Mark Devlin. A goal from Richard Murphy and second-half points by Aidan O'Neill and Cormac Hughes rewarded the terrific Bredagh spirit but ultimately the home side needed players like Owen Costello, Paddy Byrne and Oisin Quinn, who were all missing on the night.
TEAM: Michael Mullan, Matthew McAfee, Paddy Woods, Niall Colton, Mark Devlin, Aidan O'Neill, John McKenna, Richard Murphy, Matthew Quinn, Donal Hughes, Paul Doole, Conall Doherty, Cormac Hughes, Cormac White, Michael Magee and Daniel Higgins.
Bredagh 3-1 Clonduff 3-0, Monday August 9 Bredagh were missing as many as 10 first team regulars but still had just enough to see off Clonduff in an exciting match at Cherryvale. Team & Scorers: Donal Hughes, Michael Mullan, Daniel Higgins, Niall Nolan, Cormac White, Mark Devlin, Cormac Hughes(1-0), Conor McConvey(1-0), Aidan O'Neill, Paul Doole(1-0), Peter Graham, Niall Boyle(0-1) and Sean Irwin.
Kilclief 0-2 Bredagh 8-4, Monday August 2 Bredagh U-16 hurlers got their season back on the rails with a comprehensive victory over Kilclief. Although still missing a number of regulars the boys who travelled to the shores of Strangford Lough put on a tremendous display. Richard Carey, who was welcomed back to the Bredagh fold after a spell out, opened the scoring with a point from play and thereafter had a very solid game at midfield. The highlight of the first-half was a hat trick from Sean Irwin who, along with Donal Hughes, gave the Kilclief full-back line a real roasting. They finished with 5-1 between them. Bredagh led 4-2 to 0-0 at half-time. They maintained their concentration in the second-half and with Mark Devlin, John McKenna and Matthew Quinn putting in some great defensive work Kilclief were held to two pointed frees. Indeed Matthew in his forward raids drilled in two great goals. Donal Hughes and Paul Doole hit 1-1 each in this half and Cormac Hughes pointed a free as Bredagh finished strongly. More performances like this and a final spot at the end of the league might still be possible!

Ballyvarley 3-7 Bredagh 2-3, Monday July 26 The boys put up a spirited display in the second-half to come away with a creditable result. Considering the wet conditions, the away venue, and the absence of some key players, Bredagh nearly turned round an 11-point deficit. Goals from Paul Doole and Donal Hughes, as well as points from Cormac Hughes, brought Bredagh back to within four points. Doolers then had a penalty saved and they scored a fortunate late goal. There were good displays from goalkeeper Michael Mullan, Paddy Woods, Paddy Byrne, Chris McConvey and the Hughes boys and Donal McKegney in the forwards.
Clonduff 0-2 Bredagh 6-5, Monday May 3 Bredagh made the long journey to Clonduff to pick up valuable League points. Paul Doole, Paddy Byrne, Cormac White, Chris McConville and Conor McConvey were among the goals, though the most 'memorable' incident was Doolers breaking his stick... on a poor opponent's leg! Thankfully, he was able to walk off the pitch.

Doolers scored two points from frees and Cormac Hughes added another from play in the second-half.
Rossa 5-6 Bredagh 1-1 - Sunday April 4

UNDER-16 HURLING - Ballela 1-6 Bredagh 3-1 – Monday April 5th
Bredagh had a terrific victory in their first-ever match in the Down League with Paul Doole the hero of the hour with all of the scores for the winners. His final score was a sensational strike from a 20-yard free, fired to the roof of the net to turn a two-point deficit into a one-point win. Bredagh suffered an early blow when star man Owen Costello went off injured with a dislocated finger, but the rest of the team rose to the challenge and battled to the very end. Paddy Byrne, captain Chris McConvey, Michael Mullan, Cormac Hughes, they were all brilliant!
