Championship Reports
Ardglass 0-10 Bredagh 0-5 2003 Player of the Year Eddie Burns continued where he left off with a number of superb saves and kept a clean sheet, but he couldn't prevent a five-point defeat in the first Bredagh match of the new season. There was no shortage in effort or commitment from the 17-strong travelling panel, but a lack of power in midfield proved to be our downfall. In defence, Aaron Quinn had a fine game at full-back and Man of the match was Kevin Harte at centre-half-back. Brian Willigan had a terrific battle with Ardglass's right-half-forward and put in a lot of blocking tackles, while James Johnston tried hard at midfield. Conal O'Neill was the pick of the forwards while Kieran Conlon battled hard before going off injured.
TEAM & SCORERS: Eddie Burns, Conor McDaid, Aaron Quinn, Conor McCaughey, Shane Matthews 0-1, Kevin Harte, Brian Willigan, James Johnston 0-2, Ian Galway, Ciaran Conlon, Conal O'Neill, Conor Rafferty, Ronan McCann 0-1, Michael Lee 0-1, Paddy Cassidy. Subs: Peter Wright & Ryan Smith.
Loughinisland 0-7 Bredagh 3-6 ; February 8, 12.00 In a game played at their pitch, the Bredagh lads put in a great performance to win this game by eight points. The only downpoint was the red card shown to James Johnston. James and Conal O’Neill had been the pick of the forwards in the first-half when Bredagh dominated despite playing into a strong wind. A goal from Shane Matthews had the ‘away’ side in front by 2-3 to 0-2 at the break. In the second-half, the city boys were up against it with only 14 men, but the defence stood up to the test very well. ‘Steady Eddie’ Burns
lived up to his name as usual with a couple of excellent saves, Conor McCaughey showed how to catch a high ball whilst under extreme pressure and there was another commanding display by Kevin Harte at centre-half-back. At midfield, Paul Alexander and CJ Carson were always in control.
TEAM & SCORERS: Eddie Burns, Conor McDaid, Aaron Quinn, Conor McCaughey, Ian Galway, Kevin Harte, Brian Willigan, Paul Alexander 0-3, Conor Carson, Ciaran Conlon 0-1, James Johnston 1-2, Conal O'Neill, Michael Lee, Shane Matthews 1-0 & Conor Rafferty. Teconnaught 1-9 Bredagh 1-3 A weakened Bredagh team took the field but there was a lot of spirit and fight which was lacking from the previous week. After just two minutes a high ball into the goalmouth slipped through Eddie Burns' hands and we were a goal down, though Eddie performed well for the rest of game. At half-time there were only two points in it and at the start of second-half Bredagh missed a number of goalmouth chances. Eventually, the visitors tired and in the last few minutes Teconnaught pulled away. There were good performances from Aaron Quinn, Brian Willigan, Paul McCorry, Paddy Cassidy and Shane Matthews. Brian Willigan's surging runs down the left wing were an impressive sight. Conor Carson battled hard at midfield and it was a pity we were without Paul Alexander, James Johnston and Ian Galway.
TEAM & SCORERS: Eddie Burns, Conor McDaid, Aaron Quinn, Conor McCaughey, Paul McCorry 0-1, Paul McGlade, Brian Willigan, Kevin Harte, Conor Carson, Paddy Cassidy, Jamie Gardner, Ronan McCann, Ryan Smith, Shane Matthews 1-1, Michael Lee. Sub: Conal O'Neill 0-1.
Bredagh 0-10 Ardglass 1-7 Ardglass came to Belfast on a high as they were unbeaten in the League so far and they had beaten Bredagh in an earlier game. They were on top in the first half and led by 1-6 to 0-4 at the break. It could have been more only for a couple of point blank saves by Eddie Burns. The second half was very different. Bredagh gained control of midfield and kept the ball in the Ardglass half, slowly clawing back the lead. In the end, the home side was unlucky not to win the match as they led in injury-time but Ardglass equalised with their only score of the entire half. Paddy Cassidy had a great game in the Bredagh full-back line, Kevin Harte and Brian Willigan were superb in the half-backs, Ian Galway and James Johnston eventually broke the stranglehold at midfield and the pick of the forwards were Conal O'Neill, Paul McCorry and Jamie Gardner.

Bredagh v Ballykinlar/Dundrum, February 15th The game was called off when the referee failed to turn up.
Drumaness 2-5 Bredagh 2-2 Two cracking goals by Paul McGlade and Paul Alexander were the highlights of an otherwise disastrous day for Bredagh's League hopes. It was a hard-fought but poor game with some key decisions going against the visitors at key times. First, a penalty was harshly awarded against goalkeeper Eddie Burns for holding onto the ball too long when it looked like he was being fouled. Secondly, Aaron Quinn was sent off for what looked like a second yellow card offence. Aaron was involved in a scuffle in front of the referee where a Drumaness player struck out, yet he only received a yellow card. Aside from the decisions, the Bredagh lads didn't really play to their best form until the last ten minutes.
SCORERS: Paul Alexander 1-1, Paul McGlade 1-0, Shane Matthews 0-1.

Bredagh 4-10 Teconnaught 2-5 - Sunday April 4
Bredagh Minors had an excellent home win over second-placed Teconnaught though yet again the referee failed to turn up and Peter O'Reilly had to step in. In difficult conditions Ian Galway settled the home side with three unanswered points. Bredagh went on to play a half of superb football and led at the break by 2-7 to 0-3. Teconnaught started the second-half with a goal only for Bredagh to hit back with two more goals. Man of the Match Ian Galway scored 1-5 from midfield, while Brian Willigan also excelled in scoring 2-1. The other scorers were Michael Lee 1-1, Conal O'Neil 0-2 and Kevin Harte 0-1.
Bredagh 2-11 Drumaness 1-9 - Wednesday April 7 Five Bredagh U-16s helped the Minors to a good two points. The boys made the step-up with ease and enjoyed playing their part in what is the Minors second win in-a-row. Dermot Coffey slotted in nicely at midfield, Johnny Johnston did well in defence and Paul Boyd wasn't out of place in the two-man full-forward line. Shane Matthews top-scored with 1-3 and Conal O'Neill smashed home a rebound from his own penalty.
TEAM: Conor McDaid, Paddy Cassidy, Timothy Shannon, Johnathan Johnston, Declan Noble, Kevin Harte, Dermot Coffey, Conal O'Neill, Ronan McCann, Ciaran Conlon, Michael Lee, Shane Matthews, Paul Boyd. Subs: Stephen Gray and Ruairi O'Kane.
Bredagh 2-5 Ballykinlar/Dundrum 0-2 - Wednesday April 14 Bredagh Minors made it three wins in-a-row despite a first-half injury to CJ Carson. The rest of the team rallied and deserved to clinch another useful two points as they race up the League.
TEAM & SCORERS: Jamie Gardner, Paul McCorry, Paddy Cassidy, Timothy Shannon, Jonathan Johnston, Kevin Harte 0-1, Brian Willigan, Ian Galway 0-1, Conor Carson 0-1, Conal O'Neill 1-0, James Johnston 0-1, Ciaran Conlon, Conor Rafferty 0-1, Shane Matthews, Chris Donnelly 1-0. Sub: Ryan Smith for Carson (injured).
Bredagh 1-11 Newry Shamrocks 2-9, Wednesday May 26 Bredagh lost a very hard and exciting match when they conceded a last minute goal. We were missing five first team players, yet the boys put in a great performance. Newry Shamrocks admitted after the match they don't know how they robbed us of a win. We had led all the way. Shamrocks said that we were the best team they had played all season in the South Down league and we were a credit to our club. It would be unfair to signal out any players as they all gave man of the match performances. We and the large crowd of supporters were proud of them. The boys are now anxious to try and win the B Championship.
TEAM: Eddie Burns, Paddy Cassidy, Aaron Quinn. Conor McDaid, Timothy Shannon, Kevin Harte, Brian Willigan, Kieran Murray, Conor Carson, Ian Galway, Conal O'Neill, Paul McGlade, Paul McCorry, Shane Matthews and Michael Lee. Subs: Conor McCaughey & Chris Donnelly (both used).
'B' Championship: St Paul's 0 - 4 Bredagh 3 - 17 Bredagh had a great win in the 'B' championship against a very gallant St Paul's team. The goals were scored by Conal O'Neill, Michael Lee & Paul McCorry. A good team performance. Welcome back to Andy Cleary whose dead ball kicking was fantastic. Brian Willigan's runs from half back line were inspiration to the team. At midfield CJ & Paul were always well on top and kept our forwards well supplied. Conal O'Neill had a lively game at half forward. Shane Matthews who at full forward only scored two points was a great target man and made all the three goals and was unlucky not to score a few goals himself.
Team Eddie Burns, Paddy Cassidy,
Aaron Quinn, Andy Cleary, Tim Shannon, Ian Galway, Brian Willigan, Paul
Alexander, Conor Carson, Conal O'Neill, James Johnston, Ciaran Conlon,
Michael Lee, Shane Matthews, & Paul McCorry, Sub Jonathan Johnston came on
at half time for his brother James Johnston.
Bryansford 3-10 Bredagh 2-4, Wednesday, August 25 We were a goal down within seconds from a penalty and they got a second goal a couple of minutes later when Eddie Burns' clearance was blocked. James Johnston pulled a goal back with a great goal after a quick break but a Bryansford third goal came when a ball bounced in the square and was first-timed to the net. At half time it was 3-6 to 1-3. Bredagh improved and James Johnston scored a great second goal when he caught a great through ball with one hand, burst through and placed a good shot in the corner of net. Shortly afterwards he was unlucky to be sent off and a few minutes later Aaron Quinn was sent to the line when he tripped a Bryansford forward. Apart from the goals, Paul Alexander and Shane Matthews scored a point each.
TEAM: Eddie Burns, Paddy Cassidy, Aaron Quinn, Conor McDaid, Tim Shannon, Ciaran Murray, Brian Willigan, Paul Alexander, Conor Carson, Ciaran Conlon, James Johnston, Conal O'Neill, Ian Galway, Shane Matthews & Michael Lee. Subs: Paul McCorry for Michael Lee, Jamie Gardner for Tim Shannon, Declan Noble for Eddie Burns. Other subs: Conor Rafferty, Chris Donnelly, Jonathan Johnston & Ryan Smith. Unfortunately, Kevin Harte and Andy Cleary were not available. It is the end of an era as this was basically the first team that arose from the youth development and they played their last match as kids. The team mentors hope they will not give up their football and will now concentrate in future years with the Under-21s, Senior reserves and the senior team itself.
